”Miss Saigon” to be revived in 2023

Alex Wood

22 September 2022

Miss Saigon

A new production of Miss Saigon will be presented in the Crucible Theatre from Saturday 8 July 2023 to Saturday 12 August 2023.

The first regional non-replica production of Boublil and Schönberg’s hit musical (which is set during the Vietnam War and follows a tragic love story) will feature a reimagined staging by Sheffield Theatres’ artistic director Robert Hastie and RTYDS associate artistic director Anthony Lau as co-directors, with design by Ben Stones and lighting design by Jessica Hung Han Yun.

Joanna Ampil ( South Pacific ) will play The Engineer, with additional casting to be announced.

Joanna Ampil

Also in the season will be Wildfire Road , a new environmental thriller by Eve Leigh and directed by Laura Keefe. It runs from 4 to 18 March.

Hastie said today: “As we reach the culmination of our 50th anniversary year we are proud to announce new productions that continue our quest to give Sheffield audiences thrilling experiences they can only get in the theatre. A new production of Miss Saigon – the first in the UK to be given permission to explore new approaches to staging and casting since the original 1989 production – will light up the Crucible in Summer 2023. Anthony and I are thrilled to be co-directing Boublil and Schönberg’s iconic show, and could not be more excited to be welcoming Joanna Ampil to Sheffield to play The Engineer.

“And as ever at Sheffield Theatres the classic sits alongside the brand new, with a mind-bending new play from Eve Leigh taking audiences to new heights in the Playhouse, our flexible, intimate space recently renamed in honour of our founding designer, Tanya Moiseiwitsch.

One of the mega musicals of the 1980s, see this epic revival with Miss Saigon tickets

Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil’s world famous musical, Miss Saigon, has flown back into the West End to the Prince Edward Theatre following a 15 year hiatus. Having originally opened at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in September 1989, the show ran for 10 years before embarking upon an extensive world tour. Combined with its worldwide success, Miss Saigon has won 2 Laurence Olivier Awards and 3 Tony Awards, making it one of the most successful musicals ever.

By Les Miserables creators Schönberg and Boubil, Miss Saigon draws influence from Puccini’s Madame Butterfly and similarly features the star-crossed relationship between an American man and Asian woman. In this instance the American man is GI Chris Scott who is based in Vietnam during the 1970s war and the Asian woman a young bar worker come party girl, Kim.

Along with his soldier friends, Chris finds himself in the prostitute club in which Kim works, wherein his friend John buys Kim as a present for Chris for an evening from “The Engineer,” an aspirational pimp brought in by the American Dream. Kim gives up her virginity to Chris, who decides he wants Kim to himself and the two swear their love to one another.

Just as Viet Cong prepares to take Saigon, Chris trades the Engineer for Kim, with the intention of marrying her. However complications arise in the form of Kim’s cousin Thuy, to whom she was betrothed some years earlier. Chris promises to take Kim away from Vietnam when he leaves…but can he fulfil his promise?

Miss Saigon features musical numbers “The Heat is On in Saigon,” “Sun and Moon,” “I Still Believe” and “The American Dream.” The show is regarded as one of the ‘mega musicals’ of the 1980s, famed for its lavish sets and huge orchestral score, also included in the list are Les Miserables at the Sondheim Theatre and The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre.

Miss Saigon opened for previews at the Prince Edward Theatre in May 2014.

Show History

Inspiration

Miss Saigon is a sung-through musical based on Giacomo Puccini's opera, Madame Butterfly . Finding worldwide success with Les Misérables , the songwriting team of Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil. Schönberg allegedly found a photograph from the Vietnam War in a magazine one day. The picture depicted a mother leaving her child at a departure gate at an air base to get on a plane to the United States for a better life with the child's ex-G.I. father.  Schönberg thought that the mother's actions showed an immense amount of sacrifice and led him back to the plot of Madame Butterfly . The team, joined by Richard Maltby, Jr., on lyrics, decided to retain the center story and plot of the opera, but relocated everything to 1970s Saigon during the Vietnam War.

Productions

Miss Saigon premiered at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in the West End on September 20, 1989.  It was directed by renowned British director, Nicholas Hytner, and starred Lea Salonga and Jonathan Pryce.  The production closed ten years later, on October 30, 1999, after more than 4,200 performances. The Broadway production ran at the Broadway Theatre from April 11, 1991, to January 28, 2001, and featured much of the original creative team and cast, including Salonga and Pryce.

After the Broadway production closed, a tour launched across the UK with the original London staging, performing at the six largest venues in Britain and Ireland. When the tour closed in 2003, original producer, Cameron Mackintosh, developed the musical so it could be performed in smaller theatres.  Another UK tour then launched with Mackintosh's idea at its forefront, going from July 2004 to June 2006.  Tours across the United States have run from 1992 to 1995 and 2002 to 2005.  Both tours have played such significant venues as the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, New Jersey Performing Arts Center and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

Since opening, Miss Saigon has been performed in 25 companies and almost 250 cities.  It has seen productions in everywhere from Norway and Canada to Hungary and New Zealand.

Cultural Influence

  • Miss Saigon is the twelfth longest-running Broadway musical in musical theatre history, running for 4,092 performances.
  • The musical has been translated into twelve different languages, including German, Japanese and Estonian.
  • The Broadway production broke several Broadway records almost immediately, including a record advance-ticket sales of $24 million, highest priced ticket at $100 and repaying investors in fewer than 39 weeks.
  • The 2014 West End production set a new world record for opening day ticket sales.
  • The original production of Miss Saigon was one of the most spectacular and technically complex productions ever staged. 266 people worked on the London production at each performance and, of those, only 47 appeared in front of the audience.  The evacuation of Saigon scene, which involved a helicopter taking off from a roof, is still considered to be one of the most technically magnificent things produced onstage.
  • The original London production of Miss Saigon was nominated for four Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical and Best New Director.  The Broadway production was nominated for eleven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score.

With the opening of Miss Saigon , producer, Cameron Mackintosh, had four productions playing on Broadway simultaneously (the other three being Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables ).

‘Miss Saigon’ review: A dramatic spectacle saved by impressive set and cast

, ‘Miss Saigon’ review: A dramatic spectacle saved by impressive set and cast

Intensely difficult vocal and dance pieces, brilliant set design work, and an all-rounded talented cast – the latest production of Miss Saigon has all the elements of a classically excellent theatre performance, leaving audiences mentally replaying the musical’s most impactful moments for days on end.

This is one musical that would not have a lasting effect if it weren’t for the set design. Sparing no expense, the production utilises surround sound, props of an enormous proportion, and special lighting effects. The combination is incredibly effective at conveying the sheer volume of the sound of a military conflict. One of the most iconic scenes is the landing and taking off of the helicopter. The attention to detail in this scene – simulated helicopter headlights, hovering sounds travelling across the ceiling of the theatre – complemented by the impressively large helicopter prop on stage is a sight to behold. Miss Saigon would not be the same without the innovative and fresh set.

, ‘Miss Saigon’ review: A dramatic spectacle saved by impressive set and cast

Anchoring the show’s big, dramatic scenes is Abigail Adriano who played Kim. Her exceptional ability to emote through song lends her character some much-needed depth. Her strong voice conveys a wide range of feelings – love, pain, rage and determination. Adriano performs like a seasoned musical theatre professional, even though this is her professional lead role debut. Other incredible vocalists include Nigel Huckle, playing her American male love interest, and Laurence Mossman, playing Kim’s male Vietnamese suitor. Their belted notes are a delight to witness live.

Supporting the more prominent characters is an incredible ensemble cast which allowed choreographer Richard Jones’ creativity and vision to shine onstage. The choreography that accompanied “The Morning of the Dragon” is a showstopper, containing some of the more difficult and impressive moves in musical theatre.

Miss Saigon is a show packed with dramatic and over-the-top scenes. And tying it all together is the orchestra, playing a beautiful score by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg. Hats off to musical director Geoffrey Castles and his team of musicians in creating atmospheric swells of sound with palpable emotion.

The cast and crew produce an incredible all-round performance, albeit marred by an outdated storyline with less than nuanced portrayals of women and Asian communities. With a hearty serving of American exceptionalism and white saviourism, the play is riddled with stereotypes, making it difficult to form an emotional attachment to somewhat one-dimensional characters. The cast of Miss Saigon is skilled, so despite the musical’s flaws, their performance leaves a significant impact on the audience.

It must also be noted that Miss Saigon allows talented Asian musical theatre performers to shine. It was the first West End play to feature an Asian woman as the lead, giving opportunities to brilliant talents such as Lea Salonga, and today, to Abigail Adriano, who will hopefully go on to have a long and exciting career in the musical theatre industry.

Miss Saigon is currently playing at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands until Sep 29, 2024. Buy tickets here .
