Nippon NS Pro 1150GH Shaft Review – Specs, Flex, Weight

Nippon NS Pro 1150GH Shaft

It’s amazing how one shaft can be a god-send for some players while the same shaft can be utterly useless for others.

For players with a fast swing speed and aggressive tempo, most graphite iron shafts simply don’t work because they buckle under the load and lose accuracy.

But high torque, whippy graphite iron shafts can work wonders for players who have slow and moderate swing speeds.

It all depends on what your swing is like. Today we will be reviewing a shaft that is strictly for the heavy hitters: the Nippon NS Pro 1150GH.

Nippon NS Pro 1150GH Shaft Overview

I like the fact that Nippon calls this shaft a semi-lightweight shaft.

And I guess it’s just because there is no 130g version. But overall, this shaft feels heavy in the hands and on the backswing.

Not crazy-heavy; but there is definitely enough heft to make you alter your swing if you aren’t used to heavier steel iron shafts.

The Nippon NS Pro 1150GH is a low-torque stepless shaft. The tip and butt have been stiffened to create a kick point that dwells in the midsection.

When we took this shaft to the range, most of us testers noticed that there was a clear bend during the load/release – clear but not extreme.

It’s not like the Nippon NS Pro 1150GH becomes a noodle during transition. Rather, the load feels gentle and adroit.

Everything stays in its right place and your follow through feels very stable and controlled. Yes, the Nippon NS Pro 1150GH is on the stout side. But I keep thinking of Terminator 2 when I swing this shaft.

Why? Because the feel reminds of how I imagine that terminator that could turn into liquid metal must feel like: fluid but with the ability to harden at any time.

As far as looks go, this shaft has a nice polished chrome finish with very minimal branding and lettering in the middle of the shaft. Nothing distracting – just a classic steel iron shaft aesthetic.

Why is the Nippon NS Pro 1150GH So Popular?

Nippon NS Pro 1150GH Shaft1

The Nippon NS Pro 1150GH is a popular choice among fast swingers because it isn’t extremely heavy but it offers the stability that 130g iron shafts bring to the table.

How Does the Nippon NS Pro 1150GH Perform?

Every tester that participated in this session had at least a 90 MPH swing.

And every tester in the group mentioned that even though there is a clear bend point, the Nippon NS Pro 1150GH kept up with their most powerful swings.

This shaft recovers very quickly on heavy loads. On lighter swings with the shorter irons, you get excellent club head control.

After three swings each with the Nippon NS Pro 1150GH plugged into our test 7-iron, we averaged a distance of 155.4 yards.

The Nippon NS Pro 1150GH handled our faster swings and aggressive tempos nicely and kept the club head on the right path. As a result, we were getting great distance and tight dispersion.

The spin rates were a bit higher than I was expecting; but mid overall.

This only benefited the overall performance of this shaft because it made it easier to stay on the green with our long and mid irons. The only problem I had with this shaft came in my fairway play.

I was leaving bigger divots than normal with this shaft and I think it’s just because it is a bit heavier than what I’m used to – or at least, it feels heavier than what I’m used to.

Nippon NS Pro 1150GH Shaft Specs

What flexes are available what swing speeds do they suit.

Regular flex may suit 80-90 MPH swingers.

Stiff flex worked for our 91-100 MPH swing speed testers. Extra stiff would likely benefit players in the 101-110 MPH swing speed range.

What Weights Are Available? What Swing Speeds Do They Suit?

The lightest 111.5g shaft may suit 80-90 MPH swingers.

The 116g version would likely work for players in the 91-95 MPH swing speed range.

The 121.5g Nippon NS Pro 1150GH shaft should be reserved for 96-105 MPH swingers.

Why is it So Good?

The Nippon NS Pro 1150GH is a good shaft because it produces very stable and straight flight without feeling too boardy.

Is it stout? Sure. But stronger swingers should be able to handle stout.

Nippon NS Pro 1150GH First Impressions

Nippon NS Pro 1150GH Shaft2

What first struck me about this shaft was that even though it was heavier than what I’m used to, I didn’t have to alter my shot to get great results.

This shaft will jibe with most players with aggressive tempos.

Key Features & Performance

The stiffened butt and tip section help control the club head and yield low/mid launch angles.

Nippon NS Pro 1150GH Iron Review

With the long irons, I felt like I could whack the ball with more power using my natural swing.

There is slight activity in the midsection that puts more gusto behind your swing.

Nippon NS Pro 1150GH Wedge Review

On knock downs, I felt completely in control of height, distance and spin.

These shafts would work very well with aggressively grooved wedges.

Nippon NS Pro 1150GH Pros & Cons

  • Clean looks
  • Tight dispersion
  • Great for fast swing speeds
  • Good distance
  • Feels stout but not boardy
  • They feel heavier than they actually are
  • Not for moderate swing speeds

Nippon NS Pro 1150GH Shaft

Overall Score: 98/100

Who Should Buy it?

The Nippon NS Pro 1150GH would fit a wide array of players with fast tempos.

Ideally though, you should have experience with heavy iron shafts. For whatever reason, I couldn’t get over the fact that these irons feel heavier than what they are listed as.

But that shouldn’t be a problem for anyone who already games 120G+ iron shafts and is looking for a less boardy feel.

Product Overview:

Nippon has combined 50 years of manufacturing expertise, proprietary base materials, and specialized thermal processes, to create the superior performing NS PRO brand. The design of the  Nippon N.S. Pro 1150GH Tour Taper Tip Iron Shaft  is an exclusive two-weight design, which adds weight and stiffness in both the butt and tip ends of the shaft to a lightweight chassis. This construction adds speed due to the lightweight mid section, and the stability due to the reinforced tip and butt sections. It’s perfect for golfers who want the feel of a shaft that swings fast, but plays under control.

Project X 5.0 flighted shaft VS Nippon 1150 GH stiff

woltaire

By woltaire , December 29, 2013 in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting

Recommended Posts

I played lots of Golf last summer and switched my irons in spring 2013.

I played with Project X 6.0 irons with Callaway X Forged heads and now play Nippon 1150 GH regular shafts with Mizuno MP 52 heads.

Now I wanted to talk about a strange change in my misshits since I changed my irons and ask for advice.

I know: "It's not the arrow it's the indian."

But anyway I played that much this year that I really felt the difference between the two sets and the results:

My swingspeed is at 80mph with a 6 iron.

With my Project X 6.0 shafts I often hook the ball when I miss the shot.

With the regular nippon shafts and the slightly heavier club heads I very often get a push but absolutely never a hook.

My idea now is to get something inbetween.

Either the Project X 5.0 flighted shafts or the stiff version of the Nippon 1150 GH.

Both weights are almost the same with about 115 gramm.

On the driving Range I tried a 6 iron of a friend who plays Project X 5.0 and just hit slight draws.

On the flight scope I tried the stiff Nippon 1150 GH with very light Mizuno 825 Pro heads and doubled my spin rates and the fitters told me that this is great for me.

Now I am a bit unsure on which direction to take.

Is there any experience about this from your side?

Make sure you understand the different factors that go into finding the best shaft for you. Since you're worked with Mizuno, see what their Shaft Optimizer suggests. The ShaftO takes into account clubhead speed, shaft toe down and shaft kick angle, plus tempo ("how quickly you transition from backswing to downswing") and release factor ("h ow and when the club head and shaft are released during the downswing.")

The ShaftO then generates a short list of three shafts for you to try.

Also, let's compare 6i for the XForged and the JPX.825 Pro.

The XForged is a 1/4" longer and has slightly flatter lie. This might contribute to slightly to the hooks for the X.Forged. But, it could be other factors too.

I have the PX 5.0 flighted in my X20 Tours. My 6i swingspeed is 74.1 mph. I'm lucky enough to have an X20T demo 6i which I reshafted with R300 SL; swingspeed with SL is 75.2 mph (10 gr. lighter and .7 a flex softer than 5.0).

The PX 5.0 shafts have an frequency coefficient matching (FCM) flex rating of 5.5, between regular and stiff. The NS 1150GH Stiff is in the softer side of shafts marked Stiff, so the two probably have similar characteristics. (Sorry, I can't find FCM for NS shafts).

NS 1150GH in stiff has mid-bendpoint, and medium-firm tip. PX 5.0 has a flighted bend point and a medium-firm tip. (Flighted: slightly more lift on long irons, less lift on short irons). I have hit some Stiff NS 1150GH in irons before, but never hit the same model iron in 5.0 and 1150. A friend let me hit his softstepped Stiff 1150GH irons last summer, and I seemed to get through them OK.

My suggestion would be find a golf shop, or a demo day, at which you could make a 2 x 2 comparison. You could hit Iron A and Iron B in both 5.0 and 1150GH shafts, compare the test data, and then make your final decision.

-----------------------------

Note: You're a much better golfer than I am, so I would say make sure you explore the new data points - tempo and release factor - in making your choice. If the two shafts end up on your Flight scope or ShaftO short list, go with whichever one feels best.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Nippon vs KBS Shafts: Which Is Better?

Having the right shaft to go with your driver can determine a lot about your performance.

The perfect shaft should fit into your driver seamlessly and have a comfortable grip to ensure powerful swings.

Unfortunately, finding the right shaft for your driver is a task that is easier said than done.

However, there are a few brands that make this much easier.

Nippon and KBS are both top-notch brands known for producing some of the best shafts available on the market.

As you know, two can’t be at the top, as one must be superior. Read on to find out which of these shafts is better.

Nippon is a shaft known for its excellent functionality. This lightweight metal shaft is recognized as one of the most durable shafts ever made.

Its lightweight frame is why it is mostly used by beginners to amateur golfers who want to try things out.

All in all, Nippon is one of the most popular golf shaft brands globally.

On the other hand, KBS is a more recent shaft that has gradually risen to become very popular among golfers.

It is known for its sleek design and outstanding performance. Most professional golfers prefer KBS shafts due to their accuracy and power.

Both of these shafts are certainly not new to the golf game.

Nippon vs KBS Shafts

Nippon shafts have a sleek design that aims to add more power behind the swings of golfers.

This shaft has a customizable wedge on a steel shaft that can be easily adjusted to suit the golfer.

Not only does this help the golf ball glide better, but it also helps to provide a more accurate trajectory.

These premium shafts are best for players who have medium swing speeds and desire lower spins.

However, KBS shafts are for players with high swing speeds who desire higher spins. Its hollow metal frame may make it less flexible, but it still adds more power behind each swing.

With its soft feel and comfortable grip, it ensures efficient power distribution behind each swing.

Price and Availability

Unfortunately, Nippon shafts are quite hard to find in common golf stores.

Of course, this has affected their price, making them relatively expensive to purchase. However, it is essential to remember that their high price indicates high quality.

On the other hand, KBS shafts are quite easy to find in most golf stores.

Due to this, they are generally more affordable than most Nippon shafts. Although they may be less expensive, you can still be confident about their functionality.

Pros and Cons

Some of the pros and cons of Nippon shafts are:

  • High durability
  • Good trajectory
  • Consistent shots
  • More expensive

Some of the pros and cons of KBS shafts are:

  • Powerful swings
  • Lightweight
  • Great accuracy
  • Less durable
  • Low trajectory

Choosing the Right Shaft: Factors to Consider

Nippon vs KBS Shafts

To choose the right shaft between Nippon and KBS, it is essential to understand the factors that affect your game and personal preferences. Here are some critical factors to consider when selecting a golf shaft:

Swing Speed:

Your swing speed plays a significant role in determining the best shaft for you.

Golfers with faster swing speeds usually benefit from stiffer shafts, while those with slower swing speeds may find better results with more flexible shafts.

KBS shafts are typically designed for players with higher swing speeds, while Nippon shafts cater to those with medium swing speeds.

Trajectory:

The desired trajectory of your shots is another essential factor to consider. Some golfers prefer a high, towering ball flight, while others opt for a lower, more penetrating trajectory.

Nippon shafts generally offer a higher trajectory, whereas KBS shafts provide a lower ball flight.

Feel and Feedback:

The feel and feedback of a golf shaft are critical for many golfers. The ideal shaft should provide a sense of control and confidence during the swing.

Some golfers prefer the soft feel and comfortable grip of KBS shafts, while others might appreciate the consistent shots and slightly firmer feel of Nippon shafts.

Durability:

The durability of a shaft is crucial, especially for golfers who play frequently.

Nippon shafts are known for their high durability, which can be an essential factor for golfers seeking a long-lasting product.

While KBS shafts are generally less durable compared to Nippon shafts, they still offer reliable performance and longevity.

Your budget plays a role in your decision-making process. Nippon shafts are generally more expensive, while KBS shafts are more budget-friendly.

However, it’s crucial not to compromise on quality and performance for the sake of saving money. Both shafts offer excellent value for their price.

Custom Fitting:

A custom fitting session with a professional club fitter can help you find the perfect shaft for your game.

They will analyze your swing, preferences, and physical attributes to recommend the ideal shaft for your needs. This process can provide invaluable insights into whether Nippon or KBS shafts are the right fit for you.

Both of these shafts are some of the most advanced and well-manufactured pieces of golf equipment ever made.

Before determining which is best for you, you need to test both of these shafts and discover which suits you best. Only then can you know which is the right choice for you.

NIPPONSHAFT650

“Constant weighting is a Nippon Shaft specialty,” says Hiro Fukuda of Nippon Shaft USA. “It doesn’t make sense to have a 3-iron that weighs more than your pitching wedge. The pros want a constant weight throughout their set for consistency.” I could not agree more. As my knowledge of golf shafts evolved, I stopped using parallel blanks and have never gone back to them.

In the past we have soft stepped and hard stepped other iron shafts including Dynamic Gold, Rifles and more recently, Project X 6.5. We are reluctant to soft step the NS Pro given the unique bend profile of the 1150 GH tour model......Anyone?

I've only ever done it with wedges, but I've soft-stepped 1150GH Tour's into a set of Sonartec wedges back in like 2006. It like the weight of the shaft but wanted just a bit more kick. In the end the shaft was ok but the Sonartec wedges were clicky so I moved the lot.

  1. Nippon NS Pro 1150GH Shaft Review

The Nippon NS Pro 1150GH is a low-torque stepless shaft. The tip and butt have been stiffened to create a kick point that dwells in the midsection. When we took this shaft to the range, most of us testers noticed that there was a clear bend during the load/release - clear but not extreme. It's not like the Nippon NS Pro 1150GH becomes a ...

  2. Nippon 1150GH Taper stiff

Posted August 10, 2020. It's a great shaft if the profile fits you, very smooth mid/mid kinda shaft. A note on the weight, they are 116g in stiff but start at 35.0" at the wedge vs. 120g in 6.0 at 37.0" in the wedge. Cut weight of the 1150 will be heavier then the Project X 6.0 at the same playing length. Quote.

  3. NS Pro 1150 GH, anyone still using these?

Stiff Specs: 1150GH = 116g, 53.1% balance point average, 1.6* average torque, mid kick (mid ball flight) Modus 120 = 114g, 50.1% balance point average, 1.7* average torque, mid/high kick. I am not sure exactly what parameter the balance point average would play in regards to hitting the ball and feel throughout your swing.

  4. Nippon ns pro vs modus

125, 120 and SPO, SPB, 1150 are dg-ish. Minor changes here or there. Nippon was always the lightweight higher spin launch shaft. They had a cult following with the SPB which is lower launch and spin with smoother feel than DG. Modus kind of fills that area more with the heavier stuff made for better stronger golfers.

  12. Titleist NS Pro 105T vs Nippon NS PRO 1150GH

Posted August 24, 2015. I read on a shaft review site the NS Pro 850, 950, and 1050 all have a similar uniform loss of stiffness from butt to near the tip. On the other hand, the 1150 is supposed to be an entirely different shaft. So what exactly is the Titleist 105T shaft? It's a couple grams lighter than the 1150 but heavier than the 1050 and ...

  13. Project X 5.0 flighted shaft VS Nippon 1150 GH stiff

  17. Nippon N.S.Pro Golf Shaft Review

When Nippon Shaft's N.S. PRO 950GH came to market in 1999, it was the first consistently-made sub-100 gram steel shaft in the world. Light weight steel shafts allow some players to increase their swing speeds and thereby adding distance. All Nippon Shaft products are "constant weighted," meaning that every iron in a set, from 3-iron to ...

  19. Nippon NS Pro Modus 3 Shaft Review

Conclusion. The last thing I expected to change in my bag this year was my iron shafts. All it took was one range session with the Nippon NS Pro Modus 130 shafts and I was hooked. With its unmatched feel, control, and overall performance, it's no wonder Nippon has made such a great name for itself on tour and a lot of us mortals would likely benefit from putting a shaft from the Nippon range ...
