No smoking: Carnival Cruise Line cracks down on lighting up

Ashley Kosciolek

Carnival Cruise Line recently took steps to further crackdown on smoking across its fleet by banning the practice during embarkation and in new casino spaces created exclusively for nonsmokers.

New smoke-free casinos

no smoking cruise lines

Mainstream cruise lines have largely eliminated smoking in staterooms (including on private balconies) and public areas, but several lines' casinos remain places where passengers are permitted to puff away while gambling.

To address that issue without completely banning smokers, Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald said Friday on his Facebook page that, on three of its ships, Carnival Cruise Line has converted onboard conference centers to additional smoke-free casino space.

"On Carnival Breeze, Carnival Dream and Carnival Magic, while half of the [main] casino is going to remain smoking on all of our ships, on those three ships, for now ... we have designed a nonsmoking casino," Heald said, noting that the forfeited conference spaces were large and rarely used.

"You have tables and slot machines ... in these areas. If these [areas] work, which we think they will, we may possibly add them to other ships.

"We know that smokers gamble. If we thought ... the revenue was going to remain the same if we took smoking away -- it won't, which is why we haven't -- [we would have done it]. But we have, on those three ships, given you a chance to have a nonsmoking casino."

No smoking before sail-away

Prior to the new casino announcement, Heald also said Carnival would be prohibiting smoking anywhere on or near all ships in the fleet during embarkation, as that's when the vessels refuel.

"During embarkation and while we are refueling ... there is a no-smoking rule inside and out of the ship until just before we cruise," Heald explained.

The process, known as bunkering, can take hours, and because the fuel is highly flammable, rogue ashes pose a threat. Previously, smoking had only been banned in outdoor areas during that time, but now it's not allowed in indoor, otherwise smoke-friendly places, either.

no smoking cruise lines

"I've had a few rather frustrated comments about that, and I totally understand," Heald sympathized.

He said part of the reason for the change is that temporarily banning smoking until the ship leaves port allows for a smoke-free environment for all passengers as they check in at their muster stations -- some of which are in areas, like the casino, that normally allow smoking -- after completing the line's digital safety drill.

"On most of the ships, we will be using the casino as an e-muster, where you go up and you hand them your app ... or your boarding pass ... and they check you off, and you watch a life jacket demonstration from the crew," Heald said.

Previous efforts to limit smoking

no smoking cruise lines

This isn't the first time Carnival has enacted controversial smoking policies. In 1999, the line implemented the cruise industry's first completely smoke-free vessel, Carnival Paradise. The complete ban on smoking was quickly lifted when it became clear that smokers tend to spend more money at bars and casinos than nonsmokers.

In 2014, Carnival banned smoking from balconies in its ships' cabins and also made headlines in 2018, when it announced violators of its smoking policies would be slapped with $500 fines .

Ultimately, the places onboard where smoking is permitted are few and far between, with most ships only allowing it in casinos and on designated outdoor decks, usually on one side of the ship and usually near the aft so the smell wafts out to sea.

Carnival Cruise Line shares key smoking decision

Fewer Americans smoke than at any time in history.

"Current smoking has declined from 20.9% (nearly 21 of every 100 adults) in 2005 to 11.5% (nearly 12 of every 100 adults) in 2021," according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Those numbers have likely dropped further since then, but a significant number of people still smoke and cruise ships have to allow for that. Exactly how and where cruise ships allow smoking varies by line.

Both Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean allow players in their casinos to smoke; they also permit smoking in an outdoor area near the pool deck and usually on one other outdoor deck. Other cruise lines, including Celebrity Cruises, which is owned by Royal Caribbean Group, allow smoking outdoors but not in the casino.

No cruise line allows smoking in cabins or on private balconies. Passengers, however, have been known to violate those rules. That's something that's easier for some types of vape smokers, for reasons that "K" pushed to Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald.

Carnival answers a vaping question

Heald noted that answering any question about smoking might not be the easiest way to start his day.

"I must be a bit of a fool, actually I must be a huge massive yak-sized fool because I am going to start the day with the subject of smoking. Actually, 'K' is the chap who will be and I will follow on after," he wrote.

"K" took exception to Carnival (and other cruise lines) putting vape users in the same category as cigarette or cigar smokers.

"Vape smoke [devices] don't set off the alarms and there is no lasting smell or evidence that it was done. Vapers should be treated differently from smokers and given the freedom to smoke where they wish," they wrote.

"K" then went into an entitled rant based on his status level in Carnival's VIFP loyalty program.

"We are sick of being treated like third-class cruisers. Me and four of my friends all vape. Three are Gold level. I am Platinum. Our last booking was on the Miracle. Take a look at how much we spend on board. We vape and we are here. Get used to it," they added.

Heald kept his response, at least the direct part of it, brief.

"I know nothing about vaping except that it is considered smoking and that it can only be used while in the outdoor smoking areas or while playing in the smoking sections of the casino," he wrote.

"I respect your right to vape. Please respect the rights of people who do not enjoy your vaping and you must not and can not vape in non-smoking areas. If you are caught there will now be consequences including us replacing your vape with a kazoo."

Carnival passengers mostly support its smoking and vaping rules

Nearly 700 people commented on Heald's post.

"Thank you for treating vaping the same as smoking. I don’t want random chemicals in my lungs no matter what evidence may or may not say," Tony Swicer wrote.

Many people pushed back on the idea that vape smoke has no smell.

"My friend vapes and it smells," posted Debbie Clemens. "I don't know how long it lasts. I run when she pulls it out. I used to smoke so I can tell the difference between the two. Nowadays I would rather not smell either one but don't like it blown in my face. So this being said vaping is the same as smoking."

Some accused "K" of being insensitive to people who opt not to smoke or vape.

"Why is it so hard for some people to understand that most nonsmokers don't want to be near smoking? They made the choice to live smoke-free, including vape," Kathy Clark wrote.

Some vapers and smokers appreciated having smoking areas on board at all.

"I am a vaper and have no problem going in the area where the smokers are," wrote Lydia E. Medina. "They tend to gravitate because I have flavored ones. I particularly like the pineapple coconut one because it reminds me of the beaches but that's just me. Thanks for all you do John and happy cruising everyone."

Smoking Bans: Where to Light Up (or Not) on Cruise Ships

By Frommer's Staff

When was the last time you heard someone say, "Mind if I smoke?" What used to be a common-courtesy question with a laissez-faire response ("Of course not! Go right ahead!") has become the social equivalent of asking, "Mind if I pour anthrax in your coffee?"

With cities, states, and even whole countries enacting increasingly strict smoking bans for public places, it's no surprise that cruise lines are getting on board with the new normal.

"It's a different world now -- basically a nonsmoking world to be sure. Even smokers understand that," says Larry Pimentel, president and CEO of Azamara Club Cruises , one of the cruise lines with the most nonsmoking policies.

Once upon a time, and not very long ago at that, there were "no smoking" sections in the public rooms on many cruise ships. Today, the situation has reversed with a vengeance, and designated "smoking permitted" sections are becoming fewer and farther between.

Just this past week, three of the major cruise lines -- Carnival , Princess , and Holland America -- revised their smoking policies to ban smoking in most public spaces and all staterooms, effective Dec. 1, 2011 for Carnival and Jan. 15, 2012 for Princess and HAL.

"Considering that nearly 90% of our guests are nonsmokers, we wanted to make sure our shipboard experience aligns with today's guest preferences," says Tim Gallagher, vice president of public relations at Carnival, which based its new policy on guest surveys that showed a huge shift in the balance of smoking versu nonsmoking cruisers. "We believe our new smoking policy strikes a balance that pleases our guests, both smokers and nonsmokers alike."

Generally speaking, most cruise lines now prohibit smoking now in all restaurants, theaters, corridors, elevators, and most public areas. If you want to light up, most lines still let you do so in the smoking sections of select bars and lounges (often the casino bar and one nightclub) and in designated sections of the open decks. Increasingly, cruise lines are banning smoking in staterooms and suites, and many have extended that ban to private stateroom balconies as well.

On the other side of the coin, anti-smokers face the fact that no cruise line that still permits in-stateroom smoking maintains officially designated smoking and nonsmoking rooms -- you just get what you get. That works nicely for the lines' sales departments, which thus avoid having to deal with two separate inventories (and the possibility of some staterooms going empty if not enough smokers book), but it's a potential irritant to passengers with particularly delicate and discriminating schnozzolas.

To be fair, the cruise lines' cleaning regimes do seem to do the trick: In a decade and a half of cruising, I can recall only one stateroom that betrayed lingering cigarette odors from a past sailing.

In the following sections, I'll give a gold star to cruise lines that are on the leading edge of current trends -- good for nonsmokers, bad for smokers -- then run through the smoking rules at all the major cruise lines in the North American market, and some of the smaller contenders, too.

The Best Ships for Nonsmokers

Cruise lines scrub their staterooms well between cruises -- shampooing the rug and using air purifiers if necessary -- so chances are you'll never notice if Don Draper (the character in the hit TV series Mad Men ) had your stateroom before you.

There are certain people, though (my wife among them), who can sniff out residual smoke like master perfumers sniffing for impurities. These travelers' ideal environment is like a microprocessor lab -- all clean surfaces, white coats, and HEPA filters. If that sounds like you, you'll want to book with one of the following cruise lines.

Azamara Club Cruises and Oceania Cruises are the best cruise lines around for nonsmokers, and the worst for smokers. Both lines ban smoking in staterooms, on stateroom balconies, and in all but two small public areas aboard each of their midsize ships.

Among the megaship lines, Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises share top honors, with policies that ban smoking in all staterooms, on stateroom balconies, and in almost all public areas (save for designated smoking areas in some bars and lounges and designated sections of the open decks). Princess's updated policy goes into effect Jan. 15, 2012.

Among the smaller, more specialized lines, top honors go to Connecticut-based American Cruise Lines , whose small 50- to 140-passenger ships are all entirely smoke-free. Runners-up are Lindblad Expeditions and Windstar Cruises , which allow smoking only in designated outdoor areas. Luxe line SeaDream Yacht Club allows smoking only outside on decks 3, 4, and 6 -- except during dining hours, when the line's vessels become entirely smoke-free.

Aboard the new Disney Dream, smokers can do their thing (a) on the starboard side of Deck 4 between 6pm and 6am, (b) on the starboard side of the outdoor Currents bar on Deck 13 forward, and (c) on the outdoor smoking deck attached to the Meridian Lounge on Deck 12 aft. Passengers discovered trying to smoke in their staterooms are charged a $250 "stateroom recovery fee" that covers "air filter replacement, carpet extraction and the cleaning and replacement of drapes, comforters, blankets and pillows."

Holland America Line

Holland America currently permits smoking in the casino, the sports bar, in sections of the outside decks, in staterooms, and on stateroom balconies, and in either the Northern Lights Disco (aboard Eurodam, Oosterdam, Noordam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Westerdam , and Zuiderdam ) or the Crow's Nest lounge (on all the line's other ships). Cigar and pipe smoking is only permitted in sections of the outside decks. Smoking is prohibited in most public areas aboard NCL's ships. Cigarette smoking is permitted only in staterooms, on stateroom balconies, in the casino, in the Cigar Bar (on ships that have them), and on open decks (except near food venues, sport decks, kids' pool areas, and other designated non-smoking zones). Pipe and cigar smokers must contain themselves to the Cigar Bar or designated smoking lounge and to the smoking zones on the outside decks.

Cigarette smoking is permitted only in the forward starboard corner of the Pool Deck (Deck 9) and in the aft port corner of Horizons observation lounge (Deck 10). Cigar and pipe smoking is only permitted on the forward starboard corner of the Pool Deck. Guests who flout the line's smoking policy "will be disembarked at the next port of call and may also be subject to additional fees" to cover cleaning.

Princess Cruises ( www.princess.com )

Currently, Princess allows smoking in designated smoking areas that include cigar lounges, a section of the nightclub and casino, and portions of the open decks, as well as in staterooms and on stateroom balconies. After Jan. 15, 2012, smoking will be prohibited in all staterooms and stateroom balconies, and smokers who try to sneak a smoke there will be fined $250 per occurrence, charged to their stateroom account.

Can You Smoke on a Cruise Ship? The Ultimate Guide

Can You Smoke on a Cruise Ship? The Ultimate Guide

For smokers and non-smokers alike, knowing where smoking is (and isn’t!) allowed on your cruise is so important. In this guide to cruise line smoking policies, I’ll explain the guidelines for where it’s OK to smoke on a cruise and where it’s strictly forbidden.

Whether you’d prefer to steer clear of any secondhand smoke on your cruise vacation, or you’re a smoker looking for the right place to light up on your upcoming cruise, I’ll share all the basics you need to know.

Plus, I’ve included a line-by-line list of smoking policies for 39 cruise lines, as well as a handy chart to see the basic policies at a glance.

Can you smoke on a cruise ship?

In general, you can still smoke on a cruise ship, but only in designated areas. If you’re not sure where the smoking areas are, you can ask any member of the crew and they’ll give you directions.

no smoking cruise lines

Cruise lines have significantly tightened up their smoking policies over the last twenty years, but there’s still at least one designated smoking area on just about every ship. In fact, of the 39 cruise lines I researched, only one has any completely non-smoking ships!

Sorry, you’ll have to keep reading to find out which cruise ships are entirely smoke-free!

What can you smoke on a cruise ship?

Cruise lines allow passengers to smoke tobacco in their designated smoking areas. However, no cruise lines allow cannabis or CBD in any form on their ships. This applies to smoking and vaping materials, as well as edibles and topical ointments. Even with a prescription, it’s still not allowed.

Smoking cigars or pipes on a cruise

Most cruise lines allow cigar or pipe smoking, but often only in outdoor smoking areas or special cigar lounges.

no smoking cruise lines

If you like to relax with a cigar or a pipe, make sure you ask a crewmember which smoking sections you can use. It might not be all of them!

Vaping on a cruise

Using e-cigarettes (vaping) is usually only allowed in designated smoking areas. But there are a few exceptions!

A handful of cruise lines, including Cunard and Holland America, allow vaping in passenger staterooms. (Princess Cruises also used to allow vaping in staterooms, but that rule has recently changed.)

One cruise line, Regent Seven Seas, actually allows vaping in interior parts of the ship, except in the dining areas.

Smoking on stateroom balconies

With very few exceptions, smoking isn’t allowed on cruise ship balconies anymore. Although some cruisers try to sneak a smoke in the open air, it can be a safety hazard (and annoyed guests on nearby balconies will likely turn you in).

However, there are currently five cruise lines that still allow smoking on your balcony: Costa Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd, TUI, Fred. Olsen, and AIDA.

no smoking cruise lines

There are some ships on these lines that have non-smoking balcony sections—or even entire ships where smoking on balconies is prohibited—so be sure you book your stateroom on the right ship and in the correct section.

Smoking at cruise ship bars

Most bars on cruise ships—indoors and on deck—are non-smoking. There are some exceptions, like cigar bars and designated lounges, but not every ship has this feature.

But, many designated smoking areas are located close enough to bars that crewmembers will come around to take drink orders and deliver them right to you.

Smoking in cruise ship casinos

Many cruise lines with onboard casinos allow smoking in at least a section of their casinos. Smoking privileges are usually reserved for active players, and often at slot machines or select table games only.

no smoking cruise lines

Some cruise lines have specific times where the casino is entirely non-smoking. If all the ashtrays have suddenly disappeared from what was previously a smoking section, just ask a crew member. Odds are it’s the casino’s non-smoking time.

Today there are many cruise lines that have completely non-smoking casinos. Celebrity Cruises, Azamara, and Regent Seven Seas, among others, don’t allow smoking at any time in the casino.

Smoking during bunkering

If you’re unfamiliar with the term “bunkering”, it’s the ship’s refueling process. During certain port stops, your cruise ship will be topped up with fuel and smoking won’t be permitted on any of the exterior open deck areas.

The process usually lasts a few hours, and on some ships this means there are zero places where smoking is allowed during bunkering.

You may also like: A Cruise Glossary: Cruise Terms You Should Know

What happens if you’re caught smoking in a non-smoking area on a cruise ship?

Cruise lines are very strict with their smoking policies, and can assess hefty fines for people who are caught smoking in non-smoking areas. They can even kick you off the ship at the next port!

no smoking cruise lines

And no, you won’t get a refund if you’re disembarked for breaking a cruise line policy. You’ll also need to find your way home at your own expense—not a fun way to end your vacation!

Buying cigarettes or cigars on a cruise ship

Most larger cruise ships sell cigarettes and cigars on board. You can usually ask for cigarettes at any of the ship’s bars. If the ship has an indoor smoking lounge or cigar bar, you can often buy cigars there.

The onboard duty-free shops also usually carry cigarettes by the carton and cigars by the box. However, some cruise lines will hold your duty-free items until the last night of the cruise.

You must be at least 21 years old to purchase, possess, or use tobacco on cruises that begin in U.S. ports. For sailings embarking from most other ports, the minimum age is 18 years old.

Tip: Although you can usually buy cigars or cigarettes, lighters and matches can be hard to come by on board. Be sure to bring extras before you sail.

Best cruise lines for non-smokers

If you’re a non-smoker and you really don’t want to be around cigarette smoke, many cruise lines do a fairly good job keeping the designated smoking areas hidden away.

But smoking areas (especially on large cruise lines with a variety of ship classes) can vary widely from one ship to another. You might find that the smoking area on one ship is so far from the action that you’d never know it was there. But another ship on the very same line might allow smoking on half of the pool deck! (I’ve noticed this on both Carnival’s and Norwegian’s fleets as examples.)

Some cruise lines also allow smoking in their casinos, and that smoke tends to travel. If you’re a non-smoker who likes to play in the casino (or you just want to avoid wafting smoke), these cruise lines have entirely non-smoking casinos:

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line

Celebrity cruises, celestyal cruises, cunard line, marella cruises, oceania cruises.

  • Regent Seven Seas

Virgin Voyages

Overall, the best cruise lines for people who want to avoid smoke on their cruise vacation include:

Disney Cruise Line

Seadream yacht club.

  • Viking (Ocean and River)

Windstar Cruises

Remember I mentioned that one cruise line has a couple of non-smoking cruise ships? It’s luxury cruise line Seabourn. They operate two expedition ships, Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit , that are completely non-smoking.

Read more about what Seabourn has to offer in my article Which Cruise Lines Have All-Inclusive Cruises?

All Carnival ships have at least one designated outdoor smoking area, allowing cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, and pipes.

Carnival’s casinos have both smoking and non-smoking sections, with the exception of cruises sailing from or in Australia. On these cruises, the casino is entirely non-smoking.

Guests who smoke outside of the designated areas may be charged $500 per violation, and also may be disembarked with no refund of their unused cruise fare. Additionally, violators may be prohibited from sailing with Carnival Cruise Line in the future.

What ships have the most smoking areas

Hi Linda, the cruise lines that have the most smoking areas on their ships are Costa Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd, TUI, Fred. Olsen, and AIDA - simply because they permit smoking on stateroom balconies. If you're a smoker and you're not planning to cruise on one of these lines, consider looking at Carnival, Princess, NCL, Royal Caribbean, or Holland America. You'll generally find at least a couple of smoking areas on each of their ships, and most of their ships allow smoking in the casino (with the exception of Australia-based ships). Hope this helps!

  • Cigar and pipe tobacco are limited to designated outdoor areas and Cigar Bars.
  • You must be at least 21 years of age to purchase, possess, or use tobacco on sailings beginning in U.S. ports. For sailings beginning in all other ports, the minimum age is 18 years old.

Onboard Casino

  • Casino Royale® allows smoking and has designated areas for both smoking and non-smoking guests. There will be visible signage indicating the smoking and the non-smoking area in the casino.
  • Ships sailing from China and Hong Kong will not have a non-smoking area in the casino.
  • Smoking is not permitted in the casino for any ships sailing from Australia and the United Kingdom .

Other Spaces Onboard – Smoke Free

  • Onboard all interior public spaces are smoke free. Smoking is not permitted in any dining venue, theater, bar, lounge, hallway, elevator, and jogging track. Outdoor areas near restricted areas, food venues, and kids play areas and pools will not allow smoking.
  • On Oasis class, smoking is not permitted in Central Park or the Boardwalk neighborhoods.

Smoking Policies on Cruise Ships: Which Cruise Lines Allow What

J. Souza

The smoking policies with different cruise lines and cruise ships are always changing, but we will try to keep this page updated when a company decides to make a change to its smoking policy.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, this is where the cruise lines stand in regards to their smoking policies:

Carnival Cruise Line:

Carnival Cruise Line has designated areas where smokers can smoke in public areas, including certain areas of the casino (while playing designated slots machines and table games) and Liquid Nightclub.   Almost every other public area is a non-smoking zone, including dining rooms and other public rooms.  Smoking is not permitted in cabins or on balconies.

Royal Caribbean:

Smoking is prohibited in all areas of Royal Caribbean ships except for the starboard side of open decks, and a designated area of a public room.  Open or closed decks on the port side of the ship are non-smoking zones (exception for the Oasis class ships).    As with most cruise lines the dining rooms are also smoke-free.  Smoking is allowed in the casinos, although select cruises from China will have a non-smoking area.

Disney Cruise Line:

Disney Cruise Line does not permit smoking in any indoor areas. Smoking is allowed on the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the starboard side of deck 4, and on the port side of deck 9.  Smoking on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy is as follows: Deck 4 port side, aft, from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.; Deck 12 port side aft; and Deck 13 port side forward.

Norwegian Cruise Line:

Norwegian allows for smoking on designated areas of open decks, in casinos (if you are a player), and cigar bars.   Smoking is prohibited in cabins and on balconies.  Smoking is permitted on the starboard side of the Waterfront on the Getaway and Breakaway, with an exception being in the dining areas.

MSC Cruises:

MSC does not allow any smoking in cabins or on balconies.  Smoking is permitted in several bars on each ship, and on one side (indicated by signage) of the principal outdoor pool deck areas, where ashtrays are provided.

Costa Cruises

As with MSC, Costa does not permit smoking in cabins or balconies.  They do allow smoking on open decks and in designated smoking areas available in some public rooms.  No smoking is allowed in restaurants and show lounges.

Princess Cruises:

Princess allows for smoking in the cigar lounge, the casino, and in some areas on open decks.  No smoking is allowed in cabins or balconies and all food services areas.  Cigar and pipe smoking is only allowed on open decks.

Celebrity Cruises:

Celebrity does not allow smoking in their cabins or balconies, but there are a few designated smoking areas across the ship.  Certain areas on the port side of the ship are available for smokers.   Smoking is not permitted in the casino or in any food services areas.

Holland America:

Smoking is not permitted in cabins or on balconies.   Smokers can smoke on open decks and in designated areas in most public rooms. Smoking is allowed in the casino for active players only.  Show lounges and food service areas are non-smoking.

Crystal Cruises:

Crystal now does not allow smoking in indoor areas, as they once allowed smoking in cabins.   Outdoor smoking areas will be available in certain parts of the ship and a designated smoking lounge will be available for smokers.

Carnival Cruise Ship Receives New Dining Options and Updates

Carnival reveals new cruises out of tampa and mobile for 2026/2027, repositioning cruises unlocked: 10 pro tips i wish i knew sooner, how to convince my family to go on a cruise when they want a land vacation, related articles, how many cruise ships does carnival cruise line have in their fleet, list of carnival cruise ships newest to oldest, (2024) royal caribbean ships by age: newest to oldest (complete list), 11 comments.

just cancelled our holiday with Celebrity we booked a balcony suite so I could have a cup of tea and cigarette during the night I have cancer and a lot of pain especially at night so therefore find it difficult to sleep and wouldn’t dream of asking my husband to take me to a designated smoking area I wouldnt smoke on the balcony during the day but the nights are so long for me

They should allow smoking in the balconies. For goodness, it is open air! That is why we don’t take cruises anymore. That used to be our first choice for vacations! There should be smoking and non smoking rooms, think about how much money these cruiseline are loosing because of the policy.

IF cruise lines could VERY efficiently remove tobacco smoke (by more enclosed/very powerful exhaust fans?) from common areas like open aft pool area on (for ex) Holland America-Westerdam-where smoking was allowed, that would be acceptable. There were only 2 medium sized pools on the Westerdam, one enclosed, the other exposed But as it was on my recent trip thru Panama Canal, smoke was intolerable in over half of the exterior pool deck which meant no strolling over to view over the starboard side at all! Nor could one go directly to the bar to order unless prepared to battle the stifling lack of air. I realize these people paid to travel too BUT everyone in the civilized world knows second-hand smoke kills, plus some of us are highly allergic to it. THAT’S when their rights to smoke override my need for clear oxygenated air! and I adamantly object! If you have to smoke, try those artificial ones for the 2 week trip..or better yet..do yourself a favor and begin your cruise with a life-saving attempt to quit!

They ONLY give a very small areas of the ship to smoke, maybe if they gave us more areas there wouldn’t be a high concentration of smoke. Maybe YOU should just stay out of the smoking areas period. There are plenty of bars to go to.

You are worried about 2nd hand smoking killing you, but breath carcinogenics on a daily basis .. ok

Love people complaining about second hand smoke outside. Most if not all will sit be a fire with their kids making Smores or just visiting. A fire made with 10lbs of wood contains 4,300 times more carcinogenic polyaromatc hydrocarbons than 30 cigarettes according to EPA estimates. Yes, it might smell better but it’s also deadlier. News flash! There is no clean oxygenated air on this planet. It’s been so polluted by manufacturing, car exhaust, etc.

Smokers have rights too. Their money is as good as non smokers and respect should be shown to both sides. At the end of the day we are all trying to enjoy ourselves and relax

Smoking is DISGUSTING and should be banned on all cruise ships! Most smokers are dirty and drop their nasty cigarette butts wherever they’re standing, also the second hand smoking is completely offensive.

Holland America effective 2017 no balcony smoking or cabin smoking. Ecigs in cabins but not balconies.

No smoking. SMOKING SHOULD BE BANNED IN ALL AREAS AND ON ALL SHIPS

I think you need to read Princess Cruises smoking policy again…cigats and pipes are only allowed on open decks if the ship does NOT have a cigar lounge. If it has one…cigars and pipes are only allowed in the cigar lounge

Cruise Line Smoking Policies: A Smoker’s Guide to Cruising

by The Cruise Web Team October 3, 2019

Share Facebook Twitter Google Plus Pinterest Email

Many people are aware that cigars are enjoyed by many-a-passenger on cruise ships, but can you smoke cigarettes? What about vaping? And hey, its 2019, what’s the deal with cannabis and cruising? As for that last one, it’s a big no-go, and for good reason. While marijuana has been legalized in many states in the United States, it is still federally banned and all cruise lines listed err on the side of caution and make it very clear that any possession or use of illegal substances will result in immediate disembarkation and any travel expenses incurred as a result are solely the responsibility of the passenger. While enjoying your cruise, you’re often free to light up, given you follow ship and cruise line policies! And be aware that cruise lines take the following policies very seriously, as cigarette smoke can be a health and safety hazard, or simply retract from the experience of others.

Smoking Policies by Cruise Line

AmaWaterways Smoking is permitted outside only, on the aft side of the sun deck. These policies apply to all smoking devices, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers.

Avalon Waterways Smoking is permitted outside only, with the area dependent on destination. In Europe and South America, smoking is only allowed on the sky deck. And if you’re sailing with Avalon on the Mekong or Ganges River, smoking is permitted only in designated areas. These policies apply to all smoking devices, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers.

Azamara Smoking is permitted on the port side, forward area of the pool deck. All other areas of Azamara ships and Azamara land tours are strictly smoke-free. These policies apply to all smoking devices, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers.

Carnival Cruise Line Smoking is permitted in select areas of each Carnival ship, of which a list can be found here . In general, smoking is limited to specific outdoor areas and certain nightclubs and casino spaces onboard. These policies apply to all smoking devices, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers.

Celebrity Cruises Celebrity Cruises has designated certain areas of the ship as “smoking areas.” Generally, smoking is not permitted except in designated areas. Smoking is not permitted inside any guest stateroom; nor on any guest veranda. These policies apply to all smoking devices, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers.

Crystal Cruises (Ocean and River) Aboard all Crystal ships, smoking is allowed in designated smoking areas only. Smoking is not allowed in public rooms, suites or any area that is not designated as a smoking area. Indoor smoking is permitted only in the Connoisseur Club smoking lounge (aboard Crystal Mozart , Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony only) and upon request, in the VIP Casino (during play). Smoking is prohibited in all other indoor areas of the ship, including all other public rooms, lounges, corridors and restaurants, as well as all staterooms, suites and verandahs. • Promenade Deck, port side only (cigarettes and e-cigarettes only)

Cunard Smoking (including electronic alternatives) is not permitted in staterooms, on stateroom balconies or in public rooms. You will find designated areas on the open decks, where smoking is permitted. The only exception to this is Churchill’s Cigar Lounge, which is reserved for cigar and pipe smokers only. All restaurants are non-smoking, and this includes outdoor dining alternatives. Electronic cigarettes and vaporizing devices, including those which do not emit smoke/vapor, are permitted in designated smoking areas only.

Holland America Line All staterooms, showrooms and most other indoor areas are designated non-smoking. No smoking of any kind will be permitted on any stateroom verandah. Electronic cigarettes are not permitted in staterooms or in other public areas of the ship other than designated smoking areas. Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed. The designated smoking areas for all ships are as follows, unless otherwise noted:

  • On  Koningsdam , and  Nieuw Statendam , smoking is allowed on the port side only.
  • Sun Bar on  Koningsdam and  Nieuw Statendam
  • Sports Deck forward and aft of Crow’s Nest on starboard side on  Maasdam ,  Veendam ,  Volendam ,  Zaandam ,  Rotterdam and  Amsterdam

Oceania Cruises Designated Smoking Areas are available on the forward, starboard corner of the Pool Deck and in the aft, port corner of Horizons. These areas are comfortably furnished and conveniently located near food and beverage areas. Smoking is expressly forbidden in all staterooms and suites, on verandas, or in any areas of the ship other than officially Designated Smoking Areas. All areas other than those specified as Designated Smoking Areas will remain smoke-free. This includes all guest suites and staterooms, verandas, restaurants, public areas, the Casino and all other areas of the ship. All Cruise ships allow smoking cigarettes, cigars, and e-cigarettes in designated areas, indoors or outdoors.

The locations of the smoking areas vary for each cruise line.  All tend to have outdoor smoking areas, but only a few cater to indoor smokers via a lounge or sometimes in the casinos.

If you use a type of e-cigarette, we have covered them in more detail, as to whether you can bring vape pens on a cruise and where you can use them.

Can I Smoke Cigarettes in my Cabin?

No cruise lines allow guests to smoke cigarettes or cigars in the cabins.  If they do, they risk the smoke setting off the fire alarms and any consequences of being caught. Some cruise lines allow vaping

Is Balcony Smoking Allowed?

In the past, most cruise lines used to allow smoking on the balcony. Over the years, almost all prominent cruise lines have banned smoking from balconies.

The reason for the ban was predominantly because of passenger complaints and feedback.  Apart from the health issues, some people don’t like being so close to a potential safety hazard.

However, if you value being able to relax and smoke from your own balcony, four cruise lines allow smoking on the balconies .

Whether you’re a heavy smoker, a social smoker, or a non-smoker just curious about the rules, we’ve got you covered.

So, let’s dive right into it! On most cruise ships, smoking is permitted in designated areas only. These areas are typically located on open decks, away from non-smoking areas and well-ventilated to minimize the impact of smoke on other passengers. However, it’s important to note that the specific smoking policy can vary from one cruise line to another, so it’s always a good idea to check the guidelines before booking your cruise. In some cases, certain cruise lines have completely prohibited smoking in cabins and balconies, while others may have designated smoking sections inside the ship’s casino or a dedicated cigar lounge. In any case, rest assured that you’ll be able to find a space where you can enjoy your cigarette or cigar without inconveniencing others. To learn more about the specific smoking policy of the cruise line you’re interested in, keep reading our article! Smoking policies on cruise ships vary from one cruise line to another. While some cruise lines have implemented strict no-smoking policies, others have designated smoking areas for passengers who wish to smoke. These policies aim to balance the needs and preferences of both smokers and non-smokers onboard. In this article, we will provide an overview of smoking policies on cruise ships, discuss the benefits and concerns associated with these policies, examine steps taken to promote responsible smoking, compare the policies across different cruise lines, explore public opinions and surveys on smoking policies, and consider possible future changes.

Overview of smoking policies

Smoking policies on cruise ships are established to create a comfortable and safe environment for all passengers. The policies typically regulate where passengers can smoke, such as designated smoking areas, and outline any restrictions on smoking in cabins and balconies. These policies are in place to prevent health risks, fire hazards, and potential nuisance to non-smoking passengers.

Designated smoking areas on cruise ships

Some cruise lines allow passengers to smoke in designated smoking areas. These areas are often located on certain decks of the ship, typically in outdoor spaces. However, the number and location of these areas can vary depending on the cruise line. Passengers who smoke are required to use these designated areas and refrain from smoking outside of these designated zones. This policy helps to reduce the impact of second-hand smoke on non-smoking passengers and ensures that smoking is limited to specific areas.

Restrictions on smoking in cabins and balconies

To maintain the comfort and safety of all passengers, many cruise lines prohibit smoking in cabins and balconies. This policy is in place because smoke from cigarettes or other tobacco products can permeate the cabin, affecting the next occupants. Additionally, smoking on balconies poses a fire hazard, as a cigarette butt or ash could potentially ignite flammable objects or affect neighboring cabins. By enforcing these restrictions, cruise lines can ensure the well-being and satisfaction of their passengers.

Cruise lines with strict no-smoking policies

Not all cruise lines allow smoking on their ships. Some have implemented strict no-smoking policies to create a completely smoke-free environment. These cruise lines understand the health risks associated with smoking and prioritize the well-being of their passengers.

Cruise line 1’s no-smoking policy

Cruise line 1 maintains a strict no-smoking policy throughout all areas of their ships, including cabins, balconies, and outdoor spaces. This policy applies to all passengers, crew members, and staff. By having a no-smoking policy in place, this cruise line ensures that passengers can enjoy a smoke-free environment, free from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke.

Cruise line 2’s no-smoking policy

Cruise line 2 also enforces a no-smoking policy onboard their ships. Smoking is strictly prohibited in all cabins, balconies, and indoor areas, including common spaces and dining venues. However, they provide designated outdoor smoking areas for passengers who wish to smoke. This compromise allows for smokers to have designated spaces while still maintaining a largely smoke-free environment for non-smoking passengers.

Cruise lines with designated smoking areas

There are cruise lines that have designated smoking areas for passengers who smoke. These areas are carefully selected to minimize the impact of second-hand smoke on non-smoking passengers while still accommodating the needs of smokers.

Cruise line 1’s designated smoking areas

Cruise line 1 designates specific outdoor areas on their ships for smoking. These areas are located in designated zones on upper decks, away from common spaces and dining areas. By providing these designated smoking areas, this cruise line ensures that non-smoking passengers can still enjoy a largely smoke-free environment while smokers have a space to indulge in their habit without inconveniencing others.

Cruise line 2’s designated smoking areas

Cruise line 2 also offers designated smoking areas on their ships. These areas are primarily located on certain decks, away from major walking paths and common spaces. By having designated smoking areas, this cruise line recognizes the needs of smokers, while still prioritizing the comfort and well-being of non-smoking passengers.

Benefits of strict no-smoking policies on cruise ships

Strict no-smoking policies on cruise ships offer numerous benefits for passengers, crew members, and staff. These policies provide a more enjoyable and healthier environment for all individuals onboard.

Improved air quality onboard

By implementing strict no-smoking policies, cruise lines significantly improve the air quality onboard their ships. Non-smoking passengers no longer have to worry about exposure to second-hand smoke, which can be detrimental to their health. This improved air quality enhances the overall experience for everyone on the cruise, allowing them to breathe fresh, clean air.

Reduced health risks for passengers

Smoking poses serious health risks, both for individuals who smoke and those exposed to second-hand smoke. By implementing strict no-smoking policies, cruise lines minimize the health risks associated with smoking. Non-smoking passengers can enjoy their vacation without the concern of inhaling harmful second-hand smoke, reducing their exposure to potential respiratory problems, cardiovascular diseases, and other smoking-related health issues.

Prevention of fire hazards

Smoking on cruise ship balconies poses a significant fire hazard. A small spark or ash from a cigarette can ignite nearby objects, potentially leading to a fire that endangers the lives of passengers, crew members, and staff. Strict no-smoking policies eliminate this risk and ensure the safety of everyone onboard. Additionally, the absence of smoking in cabins reduces the risk of accidental fires caused by careless smoking habits.

Concerns and criticisms of smoking policies on cruise ships

While smoking policies on cruise ships aim to create a harmonious environment for all passengers, they also generate concerns and criticisms from certain individuals.

Inconvenience for smokers

One of the main concerns raised by smokers is the inconvenience caused by smoking policies on cruise ships. Strict no-smoking policies limit their options for indulging in their habit, as they cannot smoke in their cabins or on their balconies. Having designated smoking areas may also require smokers to walk a certain distance to access these zones. Some smokers argue that these policies restrict their freedom and enjoyment during their cruise vacation.

Enforcement challenges

Enforcing smoking policies on large cruise ships can present challenges for the crew members and staff. Policing the designated smoking areas to ensure passengers adhere to the policies can be time-consuming and resource-intensive. There is also the issue of passive enforcement, where crew members may be hesitant to confront passengers who violate the policies, potentially leading to non-compliance.

Impact on revenue

Cruise lines must also consider the potential impact of smoking policies on their revenue. Some smokers may choose not to book a cruise with a strict no-smoking policy, resulting in a potential loss of customers. However, cruise lines counterbalance this by catering to the larger market of non-smoking passengers who prefer a smoke-free environment. It becomes a balancing act between accommodating the preferences of smokers while prioritizing the satisfaction and well-being of the majority.

Steps taken to promote responsible smoking on cruise ships

Cruise lines have implemented various measures to promote responsible smoking on their ships. These steps aim to educate passengers about the importance of adhering to smoking policies and provide alternative options for smokers.

Education and awareness programs

Many cruise lines have introduced education and awareness programs to inform passengers about the smoking policies onboard. These programs emphasize the reasons behind the policies, such as health and safety concerns, and provide clear instructions on where smoking is allowed. By educating passengers about the policies, cruise lines hope to encourage responsible smoking behavior.

Alternative nicotine products

To accommodate smokers who wish to quit or reduce their tobacco intake, many cruise lines have started offering alternative nicotine products such as nicotine gum or patches. These products provide a safer and healthier way for smokers to manage their nicotine cravings without resorting to traditional cigarettes. By providing these alternatives, cruise lines support smokers who want to make positive changes to their habits.

Use of technology for monitoring

Cruise lines have also begun utilizing technology to monitor smoking areas and enforce smoking policies. Surveillance cameras and smoke detectors help to ensure compliance with the policies and provide evidence if any violations occur. This technological approach improves efficiency in monitoring and reduces the burden on crew members and staff.

Comparison of smoking policies across different cruise lines

Smoking policies vary across different cruise lines, as each line tailors their policies to meet the preferences and needs of their target market. These variations can include differences in the number and location of designated smoking areas, as well as the restrictions on smoking in cabins and balconies.

Variations in designated smoking areas

Some cruise lines have more designated smoking areas compared to others. While one cruise line may allocate several outdoor areas for smokers, another may limit the designated smoking areas to a single location. The availability and proximity of these areas can affect the convenience and satisfaction of smokers onboard.

Differences in restrictions on cabins and balconies

Cruise lines also differ in their restrictions on smoking in cabins and balconies. While some strictly prohibit smoking in these areas, others allow smoking on balconies or provide designated smoking cabins. These differences can significantly impact the experience for both smokers and non-smokers, as well as affect the overall air quality and fire safety onboard.

Public opinions and surveys on smoking policies on cruise ships

Public opinions on smoking policies on cruise ships vary, reflecting the diverse preferences and beliefs of individuals.

Passenger satisfaction with no-smoking policies

Many non-smoking passengers express satisfaction with strict no-smoking policies on cruise ships. They appreciate the smoke-free environment and the absence of second-hand smoke, making their cruise experience more enjoyable and healthier. Non-smokers especially value the policies that prohibit smoking in cabins, as this ensures their accommodation is free from any lingering smoke or odors.

Perception of enforcement effectiveness

Opinions regarding the enforcement of smoking policies vary. Some passengers commend cruise lines for effectively enforcing the policies and ensuring compliance. On the other hand, there are also passengers who believe that enforcement is lacking, citing instances where smoking policies are not strictly followed. These individuals express concerns about the potential negative impact on their experience if the policies are not consistently enforced.

Possible future changes in smoking policies on cruise ships

The future of smoking policies on cruise ships may see stricter regulations and increasing pressure from health organizations.

Trends towards stricter regulations

Health concerns related to smoking have prompted many countries to enforce stricter regulations, such as bans on smoking in public places. Similarly, cruise lines may choose to adopt even stricter smoking policies in the future, aligning with the global trend towards fewer smoking privileges. This could result in a complete ban on smoking, eliminating designated smoking areas and further expanding restrictions on cabins and balconies.

Increasing pressure from health organizations

Health organizations constantly advocate for smoke-free environments and work towards reducing tobacco consumption worldwide. As public awareness of the harmful effects of smoking continues to grow, health organizations may exert more pressure on cruise lines to enforce stricter smoking policies. This pressure could include initiatives to promote smoke-free cruises and guidelines for cruise lines to follow in terms of smoking policies.

Smoking policies on cruise ships are vital for maintaining a healthy and enjoyable environment for all passengers. Whether through strict no-smoking policies or designated smoking areas, cruise lines strive to balance the needs of both smokers and non-smokers onboard. These policies offer numerous benefits, such as improved air quality, reduced health risks, and prevention of fire hazards. However, concerns regarding inconvenience for smokers, enforcement challenges, and potential impact on revenue exist. To promote responsible smoking, cruise lines employ education and awareness programs, alternative nicotine products, and technological monitoring. As smoking policies continue to evolve, it is important for cruise lines to consider public opinions and surveys, and potentially adapt their policies to meet changing preferences and health regulations. By doing so, cruise lines can ensure that all passengers have a safe and pleasant experience while sailing the high seas.

Cruise Ship Smoking Policies Are Confusing But Here's What Smokers Need To Know

Are you a smoker looking to take a cruise vacation? If so, you may be wondering what the regulations are for smoking on board. Luckily, there are some options available to smokers who want to enjoy their cruise without having to give up their nicotine fix.

Let's face it, things have changed as far as smoking is concerned. When I first started traveling there were smoking and non-smoking areas of the airplanes and today we prohibit people even from smoking in public parks. While it is easy to ban smoking from airplanes and other public transit methods, cruise ships are a bit different for two major reasons.

  • You may be on a ship for days at a time without being able to get off
  • Fire at sea is one of the biggest dangers that any ship faces

As a result, cruise ships have pushed smokers to specific areas of the ship to get their nic fix though it isn't just because of air pollution and complaints of other guests. It is all about safety.

This wasn't always the case though. For instance, the near-industry-wide prohibition against smoking on cruise ship balconies arose from 2006 Star Princess fire that was determined to have been the direct result of a cigarette butt that set fire to furniture on a cruise ship balcony, flooring, partitions, and other items. This is one of the reasons why even though smoking is prohibited on the balconies of all cruise lines sailing from American ports ( except Costa and in the Garden Villa rooms on Norwegian Gem, Norwegian Pearl, Norwegian Jade, Norwegian Dawn, Norwegian Star, and Norwegian Jewel).

The cruise lines will still warn you not to leave items on your balcony though. Part of it is so that things don't blow overboard ... but it's also because there is the very real possibility that someone could drop a cigarette butt overboard assuming that it will land in the ocean and they will never be caught.

For west coast cruisers, the question of smoking on a cruise ship is even more interesting since Mexico has banned all forms of smoking (including e-cigarettes) in places such as sidewalks, beaches, hotels, parks, restaurants, bars, and vaguely, "anywhere that children gather". This means that cruisers to Cabo San Lucas , Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, and Ensenada can no longer plan to light up once they get off the gangway in the Mexican Riviera or Baja now and that's going to be a rude surprise for Americans who didn't prepare for the change in policy that became law in 2023.

When individuals fail to comply, they can incur steep fines of between $50-$300 or and even face detainment for up to 36 hours. As a result tourist destinations are working to educate guests and cruise lines are doing the same. Being told of the laws is better than accidentally breaking them ... but it can still be an awkward surprise if your idea of a cruise stop in Mexico is sitting on a beach holding a margarita in one hand and taking a slow relaxing drag on a cigarette with the other.

So, Where Can You Smoke On A Cruise Ship?

Most cruise ships allow smoking in certain areas, such as outdoor smoking areas, casinos, and cigar lounges (cigars only). However, it is important to note that these areas can vary by cruise line and if you are a smoker, always work with a travel agent who understands your needs. You will also want to ask a member of guest services once onboard to confirm the policies for that particular ship since variations to policies like this can be enforced differently from ship to ship.

It is also important to remember that cigarettes, cigars, and tobacco pipes can be brought onboard and smoked in select areas. Additionally, vapes and e-cigarettes are also generally allowed on most cruise lines as well. Despite this, I had an overzealous security person in San Diego last fall who insisted that I had a vape in my bag and was determined to find and remove it. (there was no vape and despite him running the bag through several times and attracting the attention of a supervisor while holding up the line ... he was unable to find what wasn't there).

Generally speaking though, most cruise lines do allow smoking in the casino, while you are actively playing. That last part is open for wide interpretation but as with everything, talk with the casino host or guest services if you aren't sure.

Cruise Lines That Allow Smoking On Balconies Still

Above, we mentioned that most cruise ships operating from US and Canadian Ports have prohibited smoking on balconies, here is the list of major cruise lines that you can still enjoy smoking a cigarette from the privacy of your balcony.

  • AIDA Cruises -
  • Fred Olsen - smoking policy - allows for smoking on cabin balconies except for Terrace Balconies on Bolette and Borealis. Guests may also use electronic cigarettes in cabins.
  • Mein Schiff -
  • COSTA Cruises - smoking policy - including specifying that they will provide a special "wind proof ashtray" for smokers wishing to enjoy a drag on their balcony. They also specifically allow electronic cigarettes and vapes in cabins and at designated cigar lounges.

What About Smokeless / Vaporless Nicotine Products?

While products like nicotine pouches, gum, and patches - not to mention chewing tobacco and tobacco pouches - are no substitute for being able to enjoy the relaxing nature of smoking a cigarette, these are all options that enable users to satisfy their nicotine cravings while not having to worry about running up to a specific corner of a top deck and shivering in the wind while puffing away with other outcasts.

Having options like this can help promote a stress-free vacation and should be considered if this is a concern of yours.

If you're not familiar with nicotine pouches, they, unfortunately, fell under California's "flavored tobacco ban". Hence, you can no longer get them in most California stores before your cruise. However, they can legally be sold online to consumers 21+ at online stores like  Prilla  where you can find a variety of pouch brands including ZYN and On! as well as others. They work like snuff / snus / tobacco pouches where you put the tea-bag like pouch between your lip and gum. However, unlike with tobacco pouches, you can swallow the saliva and there are less concerns with drying out if you only use it periodically.

In addition to offering a spectrum of flavors and strengths, they are also easy to use and discard when finished with. As such, smokers can freely accommodate their smoking habit in public spaces, including the ship’s deck, bars, and restaurants while being much more discrete than that guy carrying a spit can around with him at the bar.

What Happens If You Get Caught Smoking In A Non-Smoking Area?

As with every policy on a cruise ship, your first offense will generally be a firmly worded admonishment and a warning that there will be further penalties if you continue. If you are smoking in your stateroom though, not only will you be subject to a penalty / cleaning fee of $250-$500 depending on the line but you will also be required to pay for any damages such as burn marks.

At $500 for each violation and the possibility to get banned from sailing, Carnival Cruise Line actually has one of the toughest policies about smoking . This includes the fact that if a guest is found to be in violation of their smoking policy, "all guests in the stateroom may be disembarked from the vessel."

Each cruise line reserves a considerable amount of discretion with how they will deal with repeat violators and how severe the specific violation is. Before crying that this is unfair or the cruise lines just trying to raise more money - remember that more than 500 people die each year due to home fires caused by smoking materials . Roughly 23% of deaths are due to home fires, and 10% of all home fire injuries.

Cruise lines want to keep us safe so we have a great time and can keep spending money. They don't want to be a bully worrying about policing what we put in our bodies.

Please Do No Smoke Cigarettes In The Cigar Lounge!

As someone who appreciates the subtle notes of cigar smoke and enjoys the culture of sophistication that comes with knowing who rolled my stogie and where the tobacco came from, I've become someone who on occasion, likes to visit cigar lounges on cruise ships.

Unfortunately, all too often, these lounges are being used more frequently for folks smoking cigarettes than for folks who want to relax with a cigar and snifter of cognac or a fine cocktail.

While I respect your preference to smoke cigarettes and appreciate the challenges you face to overcome what is for many an addiction that they'd like to kick ... cigarette smoke stinks. It's freaking awful for those of us who aren't cigarette smokers. This order then makes our time in the Cigar Lounge an unpleasant one that results in nobody using the space and that's just a waste.

Apparently, I'm not alone in my perspective though. If you've ever wondered why cigars and cigarettes smell differently, it is because much of the unpleasant odor from cigarettes is caused b the paper and additives used in cigarette production. Also, let's face it - the tobacco used in a good-quality cigar and a typical American cigarette are far from the same.

That is a debate for another time!

A Cruise Is Not The Time To Try And Quit Smoking

While you may be thinking about the issue of where you'll be able to smoke on a cruise and it is just adding to your stress level, you're not alone. This is a stressful situation for the millions of smokers that chose a cruise vacation each year.

Some of you may look at this as an opportunity to go "cold turkey" and quit since it provides a good opportunity to find plenty of distractions and aside from strolls through the casino, you won't be exposed to temptation.

Our simple advice to you is that your vacation is NOT the time to risk going through withdrawal symptoms ... even if they are limited to simply being cranky. If you want to practice quitting during the months leading up to your cruise though ... THAT is a great way to do it.

Your cruise can then be a celebration of the fact that you've been tobacco-free for weeks or months and if you have a milestone like that, make sure to let the maitre de know and the chef may even make a special dessert or something delivered to your table one night at dinner.

Overall, taking a cruise vacation does not have mean giving up your nicotine fix entirely! With careful planning and research into the specific regulations of each cruise line you can still enjoy your time at sea while getting your nicotine fix whenever needed!

Thanks for reading. We hope this was helpful!

Answered: Can You Smoke or Vape on a Cruise? (And More Questions)

Wanting to light up while on your cruise? It’s not as easy as simply having a smoke wherever you please. At sea, fire is by far the biggest danger to the ship, so cruise lines are serious about policies surrounding cigarettes and vaping. That means there are a number of rules that you’ll need to know about.

The good news is that smoking is allowed on cruises, so you don’t have go without. Still, if you’re one of the millions who smoke, here’s what you need to know about doing it on the cruise ship.

Can You Smoke While on a Cruise?

no smoking cruise lines

First things first, if you want to smoke on your cruise, then yes, it is allowed. This includes cigarettes, cigars, and vaping. However, it’s not as simple as just lighting up wherever you want. Cruise lines have strict rules surrounding smoking for the safety of the ship and the comfort of all guests who may not want to smell cigarette smoke (more details on this below)

But if you’re someone who wants to have a smoke, rest assured that it is allowed. In fact, some cruise ships even offer cigar lounges for those who like a puff.

What Are the Rules Around Smoking Onboard?

no smoking cruise lines

As mentioned, the cruise lines have a number of restrictions on smoking aboard the ship. This is all designed to keep other passengers from being bothered by the smell and to keep smoking safer from creating a fire.

Smokers are allowed to light up only in designated areas around the ship . Generally this will be an open-air deck where boxes will be provided for disposing of cigarette butts. As well, smoking is generally allowed in casinos , though some ships may have non-smoking sections.

That said, large portions of the ship are off-limits to smoking . This includes all public areas like the theater, restaurants, and even most outdoor areas of the ship. As well, you aren’t allowed to smoke in the cabin or on a balcony should you have one.

In other words, it may be a big ship, but only a small portion is actually available for smoking.

What’s the Smoking Age on a Cruise?

If you are sailing from the United States, then you should know that cruise lines follow federal law regarding the legal age to smoke . That means you will need to be 21 years old to smoke.

However, if sailing from other countries or visiting ports off the ship, then you are subject to the rules of that country. So if you visit a country where the legal age to smoke is lower, you’ll be able to smoke while in port.

Can You Vape on the Ship?

Technology has seemed to touch everything in our lives, and that even includes smoking. These days vaping is extremely popular as an alternative to traditional cigarettes.

You should know that vaping is allowed on cruise ships. It does, however, follow the same rules as smoking cigarettes or cigars. Vaping is only allowed in certain areas on the ship and never in your cabin or on your balcony.

What Happens if I am Caught Smoking in my Cabin?

no smoking cruise lines

Smoking in your cabin — including on the balcony — is a big “no-no” on a cruise. All the lines have explicit rules against it. This is for a couple of reasons. For one, no one wants to stay in a cabin after a previous occupant smoked heavily.

More importantly, however, the risk of starting a fire. All it takes is one unattended cigarette or a flick of hot ash to accidentally create a fire on the ship while at sea. The risk is simply too great, even if smoking on a balcony.

If caught smoking, expect a fee. Major lines including Carnival and Royal Caribbean assess a “cleaning fee” if you violate the policy. This ranges in amount from $250 to $500. Just stick to the designated areas and you have nothing to worry about.

Are Cigarettes Sold on the Cruise?

If you want to stock up on cigarettes, a cruise ship is a pretty good place to do so. Duty-free shopping is a big deal on a cruise , and that means you can buy vices like alcohol by the bottle and cigarettes by the carton. The prices here are usually pretty good as the taxes and fees normally seen on land don’t apply.

It’s typical that any alcohol bought in duty free shops will be packaged and then delivered to your cabin on the last night of the cruise. While we’ve never purchased cigarettes on a cruise, it’s our understanding that they can be subject to similar rules.

As Royal Caribbean shares on their site : “Duty free items purchased onboard can be taken to your room and enjoyed during your vacation. However, duty free alcohol and in some areas cigarettes will be delivered on the final day or morning of your voyage.”

If they are held, you can always purchase packs while in port if you run low to smoke during the cruise.

As a smoker preparing for a cruise, you may be contemplating how to smoke on board without getting caught.

However, before you sneak a cigarette, we really recommend adhering to the rules and regulations of your ship.

We highly recommended that you comply with the rules to avoid any significant fines.

How To Get Away With Smoking On A Cruise Ship

Most cruise ships have designated smoking areas, and some even permit smoking in certain staterooms or on designated balconies. Plus, there are some smoker-friendly cruise ships.

Along with finding a smoker-friendly cruise line, it’s important to note the restrictions when it comes to e-cigarettes and vaping.

Much like traditional cigarettes, vaping is often allowed only in designated smoking areas, but some cruise lines offer more lenient policies.

Some cruises even have such relaxed policies that you can enjoy a cigarette or cigar at the casino.

Certain popular cruise lines, like Royal Caribbean, even have cigar lounges. So you definitely don’t have to go through withdrawal symptoms on your next cruise vacation.

Understanding Cruise Ship Smoking Policies

Before you embark on your cruise, it’s important to understand the smoking policies of the cruise line you’ll be traveling with.

Cruise ships have strict rules regarding when, where, and how you can smoke, including the use of e-cigarettes and vaping devices.

Familiarize yourself with these policies to avoid violating the rules which could result in fines or other penalties.

  • Research the specific smoking policies of your chosen cruise line
  • Note the restrictions and rules regarding e-cigarettes and vaping devices
  • Be aware of potential fines or penalties for violating smoking policies

Finding Designated Smoking Areas

Once on board, seek out the designated smoking areas where you can enjoy your cigarette or vaping device without breaking the rules.

These areas are typically clearly marked and can often be found in the following locations:

  • Outdoor decks
  • Casino bars
  • Designated lounges

To enjoy your smoking experience while adhering to the rules:

  • Locate a designated smoking area on your ship
  • Use proper disposal methods for cigarette butts and other smoking-related waste
  • Be respectful of non-smoking passengers by staying within the designated smoking area

By understanding the smoking policies of your cruise ship and being respectful of fellow passengers, you can get away with smoking on your cruise while staying within the rules and avoiding penalties.

Can I Smoke Cigarettes In My Cabin?

ashtray

Smoking in cabins is not allowed on any major cruise line due to the potential fire hazard it poses.

Designated smoking areas are available on most ships operated by U.S. cruise lines, with indoor public spaces being off-limits for smoking.

However, some cruise lines make exceptions for casinos or have dedicated smoking rooms within the larger casino.

Can I Smoke On My Balcony?

Smoking on cabin balconies is only permitted by Fred. Olsen Cruise Line and Costa Cruises, as stated by Cruise Critic .

Other major cruise lines prohibit smoking on cabin balconies due to the potential fire hazard it poses.

Can I Smoke Weed On A Cruise Ship?

Despite the legality of cannabis in certain ports, smoking weed is strictly prohibited on all cruise ships .

This ban applies to both recreational and medical marijuana use, meaning that even if you have a prescription for medical marijuana, you are not allowed to smoke it onboard.

This is because cruise ships are registered in countries where marijuana is illegal, and the ships must adhere to the laws of their country of registration.

Therefore, anyone caught smoking weed on a cruise ship can face serious consequences, including being disembarked at the next port of call and possibly even facing legal action.

We highly discourage you try smoking weed on a cruise ship.

Being caught smoking weed on a cruise ship can result in severe consequences, including but not limited to being placed in the cruise ship jail , removed from the ship, facing arrest, and potentially being banned from cruising for life.

It’s just not worth it. Plus trying to mask the smell is almost impossible and you are very likely to get caught.

Can You Bring Cigars On A Cruise?

Cigar

Similar to cigarettes, cigars and tobacco pipes can be brought onboard and smoked in designated areas on some cruise ships.

However, the areas where smoking cigars and pipes are allowed are typically more restricted than those for cigarette smoking.

But there is the cigar lounge on a lot of major cruise lines.

What Cruise Lines Have A Cigar Lounge?

The following cruise lines have cigar lounges on some, not all, their cruises:

  • Crystal Cruises
  • MSC Cruises
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Princess Cruises
  • Regent Cruises
  • Royal Caribbean
  • Silversea Cruises

Make sure to double-check the cruise you are booking if a cigar lounge is an important selling point for you.

Can I Smoke Cigarettes In The Cigar Lounge?

This may vary, but most cigar lounges on cruise ships are strictly for cigar and pipe smokers only.

You cannot smoke cigarettes in the cigar lounge as they have a separate designated smoking area.

Are There Non-Smoking Cruise Ships?

While there are no entirely non-smoking cruise ships, many cruise lines have implemented strict smoking policies and designated smoking areas to accommodate non-smokers.

These areas are typically limited to outdoor decks and designated indoor areas, such as casinos, bars, and lounges.

Preparation and Tools For Your Next Cruise

Cruise SHip Balcony with chairs

Choosing the Right Cruise Line

Researching different cruise lines and their smoking policies before booking your cruise is extremely important.

Some lines have more lenient rules regarding smoking and vaping, such as Costa and a few others.

These lines may allow smoking in designated areas or even in your stateroom.

Be aware that most cruise lines treat e-cigarettes the same as traditional cigarettes and restrict them to designated smoking areas.

Packing Smoking Essentials

To ensure a hassle-free smoking experience on your cruise, you may want to pack essential items such as:

  • A portable ashtray : to dispose of cigarette butts responsibly and avoid littering.
  • A lighter or matches : to light your cigarettes, consider a windproof lighter option if you plan on smoking outside.
  • Tobacco or e-cigarettes : bring enough supplies for the duration of your cruise. They may not be available for sale onboard or cost a pretty penny at shore.
  • A sealable bag : to store used cigarette butts, especially if you have a cabin without a designated smoking area or a balcony.

Utilizing Smokeless Alternatives

If you still have concerns about smoking on a cruise ship, booked a smoke-free cruise, or want to be more discreet, consider using smokeless alternatives such as:

  • Nicotine patches : a convenient way to get a nicotine fix without smoking.
  • Nicotine gum : can be easily used on a cruise ship without drawing attention.
  • Snus (smokeless tobacco) : placed under your upper lip, snus provides a nicotine boost without creating smoke.

Make sure you know the specific guidelines regarding vaping onboard and which areas are designated for e-cigarette use.

However, policies may change, so it’s best to check the up-to-date information before your trip.

Tips for Discreet Smoking

'No Smoking Area' Sign

Despite the strict non-smoking policies on cruise ships, there are ways to discreetly smoke without getting caught. if you want to smoke inconspicuously on board, consider these tips.

(And no. We are not condoning breaking the rules, but if you’re going to do it, at least be smart about it.)

Timing and Location

To minimize the chances of being detected, choose the right time and location for your smoking sessions. Consider the following:

  • Opt for late-night or early-morning hours when fewer people are awake and moving around the ship
  • Find a secluded spot, preferably on the highest deck, where the wind can help disperse the smoke and reduce visibility
  • Use the designated smoking areas to your advantage. Although smoking is allowed in these areas, make sure to distance yourself from non-smokers and abstain from drawing attention

Odor Management

Properly managing the smell of smoke is crucial when trying to smoke discreetly. Here are some tips:

  • Utilize smokeless tobacco or e-cigarettes, which produce less odor than traditional cigarettes
  • Use a personal air freshener or a simple mixture of water and essential oil in a spray bottle to mask odors
  • Keep mints or gum with you to freshen your breath after smoking

Proper Disposal Methods

Discreetly disposing of your cigarette leftovers is essential to avoid detection. Make sure to follow these guidelines:

  • Always dispose of cigarette butts in the designated receptacles found in smoking areas to minimize any trace of your smoking activities
  • Carry a small, portable ashtray or a sealable container to store your cigarette butts and ashes temporarily if you’re smoking in a non-designated area

Keep these tips in mind as you navigate the challenging landscape of smoking on a cruise ship, and remember to be responsible for your actions and respectful of the rules and other passengers.

Consequences of Breaking the Rules

When you break the smoking rules on a cruise ship, several consequences may arise, impacting both your experience and the overall safety of the passengers and the ship.

Firstly, if you’re caught smoking in an unauthorized area, you’ll be asked to move to a designated smoking area immediately.

It’s important to follow these guidelines, because repeated violations may lead to more severe consequences.

Next, smoking in your cabin or cabin balcony is strictly prohibited on most cruise lines. If you’re caught doing so, you’ll be told to stop and may face a substantial cleaning fee.

This fee is designed to cover any additional cleaning efforts required to remove the smell and residue left by the smoke.

Disregarding the smoking rules could lead to dangerous situations, such as fire hazards.

The enclosed environment of a cruise ship makes it vital to adhere to these guidelines not only for your safety but also for the safety of those around you.

Furthermore, continuously breaking the rules might result in harsher penalties, such as:

  • Fines for violating ship regulations
  • Removal of certain privileges or amenities
  • Forced disembarkation at the next port
  • Refusal of future bookings with the cruise line

Keep in mind that designated smoking areas are set up for everyone’s benefit, ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for all passengers.

By observing the set rules on a cruise ship, you’ll be able to enjoy your vacation without causing harm or discomfort to yourself and others.

In summary, getting away with smoking on a cruise ship can be challenging due to many cruise lines having strict policies against smoking in certain areas.

However, there are a few key strategies you can implement to minimize the chances of being caught or penalized.

First, familiarize yourself with the smoking policies of your chosen cruise line, and ensure you follow their designated smoking areas. These areas typically include specific outdoor spaces and designated indoor lounges, such as cigar bars or casinos for active players.

Second, consider using e-cigarettes or vapes, as some cruise lines treat these differently from traditional cigarettes.

While they may still be restricted in the majority of areas, they might be perceived as less intrusive or noticeable to fellow passengers and staff.

Finally, pay close attention to the rules regarding smoking in cabins and balconies. While it may be tempting to try and sneak a smoke on your private balcony, cruise lines have strict policies against this, and you may face significant fines or penalties if caught.

Remember, adhering to the smoking guidelines on board not only prevents you from potential trouble but also maintains a pleasant environment for everyone aboard the ship.

By following these tips and staying aware of the rules, you can enjoy your cruise while still indulging in your smoking preferences when and where it is allowed.

Introduction

Welcome aboard, fellow adventurers! If you’re a smoking enthusiast who loves to sail the high seas, you may be wondering how to indulge in your habit while enjoying a cruise. While many cruise lines have implemented strict no-smoking policies to ensure the comfort and safety of passengers, there are still ways to discreetly enjoy a smoke without getting caught. In this article, we will dive into the world of “smoking on the sly” and share some tips and tricks to help you get away with smoking on a cruise ship.

Before we proceed, it’s important to note that we do not endorse or encourage smoking, and we respect the rules and regulations set forth by cruise lines. However, we also understand that smoking is a personal choice and some individuals may seek ways to enjoy it during their cruise experience. We believe in providing information for educational purposes, so if you do decide to smoke, it’s crucial to do so responsibly and be considerate of your fellow passengers and crew members.

Now, let’s set sail on this covert smoking adventure and explore the strategies that can help you enjoy a smoke while cruising the open waters.

Understanding the Cruise Ship Smoking Policies

Before embarking on your cruise, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the smoking policies of the specific cruise line you’ll be sailing with. Each cruise line has its own set of regulations regarding smoking, and it’s crucial to adhere to them to avoid any penalties or disruptions to your trip.

Most cruise lines have designated smoking areas on the ship, such as outdoor decks or specific lounges. However, it’s important to note that many ships have implemented stricter policies in recent years, limiting smoking to designated areas only. Some cruise lines even have entirely smoke-free ships.

To find out the specific smoking policies of your cruise line, you can refer to their website or contact their customer service. Make sure to inquire about the designated smoking areas, as well as any restrictions on smoking in cabins or balconies.

Additionally, it’s essential to respect the policies and be considerate of your fellow passengers who may have sensitivity or health issues related to smoking. Even if you’re discreet, the smell of smoke can still be bothersome to others, so it’s vital to follow the rules and be mindful of those around you.

By understanding and respecting the cruise ship’s smoking policies, you can ensure a smoother and more enjoyable smoking experience while onboard.

Selecting the Right Cabin

Choosing the right cabin can play a significant role in your ability to smoke discreetly on a cruise ship. To increase your chances of getting away with smoking, consider the following factors when selecting your cabin:

  • Opt for a cabin with a balcony: Cabins with balconies provide more privacy and are ideal for enjoying a smoke without drawing unwanted attention. However, it’s important to check the cruise line’s policy on smoking in balconies, as some may have restrictions or designated smoking areas.
  • Avoid cabins near non-smoking areas: To minimize the risk of smoke reaching non-smoking areas, try to select a cabin that is located away from areas where smoking is prohibited. This includes avoiding cabins near dining areas, theaters, and recreational facilities.
  • Consider cabins on lower decks: Cabins located on lower decks tend to have less foot traffic and can provide a more discreet environment for smoking. As an added benefit, you’ll have easier access to designated smoking areas located on the lower decks.
  • Research ship layouts: Some cruise ships have designated smoking cabins or sections on specific decks. By researching the ship’s layout beforehand, you can determine the best areas for smoking and select a cabin close to them.

Remember, even if you have a balcony or a more favorable cabin location, it’s crucial to be considerate of your fellow passengers. Keep noise levels down, ensure smoke does not drift into neighboring cabins, and always follow the cruise line’s policies on smoking to avoid any potential penalties.

By carefully selecting a cabin that allows for more privacy and considering the ship’s layout, you can increase your chances of enjoying a discreet smoke during your cruise.

Utilizing Designated Smoking Areas

One of the easiest and most convenient ways to enjoy a smoke on a cruise ship is to make use of the designated smoking areas. These areas are specifically set up to accommodate smokers while minimizing the impact on non-smokers. Here’s how you can make the most of them:

  • Familiarize yourself with the ship’s designated smoking areas: Before setting sail, take the time to familiarize yourself with the ship’s layout and identify the designated smoking areas. These areas are typically located on outdoor decks and may have seating or ashtrays available.
  • Respect the rules and boundaries: When using the designated smoking areas, be sure to adhere to the rules and guidelines set by the cruise line. This includes not smoking in non-designated areas and properly disposing of your cigarette butts in the provided receptacles.
  • Be mindful of others: While in the designated smoking areas, be considerate of your fellow passengers. Keep noise levels down, avoid blowing smoke in the faces of others, and always ask permission before lighting up near someone else.
  • Time your visits strategically: If the designated smoking areas tend to get crowded, consider visiting during off-peak times to ensure you have enough space and privacy to enjoy your smoke.

By utilizing the designated smoking areas provided by the cruise line, you can enjoy your smoke without infringing on the rights and comfort of non-smokers. Remember, proper etiquette and respect for others are key when using these areas.

Disguising the Smoke and Smell

When trying to get away with smoking on a cruise ship, it’s important to minimize the visibility and smell of smoke. By employing a few tricks, you can help disguise the evidence and reduce the risk of getting caught:

  • Invest in smokeless devices: Consider using smokeless alternatives, such as electronic cigarettes or vaping devices, which produce less visible smoke and eliminate the smell associated with traditional tobacco products.
  • Use a smoke filter: Smoke filters and sploofs are devices designed to filter and neutralize the odor of smoke. These handy gadgets can help greatly in reducing the smell and lingering scent of smoke.
  • Choose odor-neutralizing products: Use odor-neutralizing sprays or air fresheners in your cabin to mask any lingering smell. Be sure to choose products with a neutral or fresh scent to avoid attracting attention.
  • Take advantage of ventilation: If you’re in a cabin with a balcony, try smoking near the edge of the balcony where the smoke can easily disperse into the open air. Opening windows or vents in your cabin can also aid in removing smoke and minimizing odor.
  • Practice airflow management: Create positive airflow in your cabin by using fans strategically. Position them near windows or balconies to help direct smoke towards the outdoors rather than circulating it inside the cabin.

While these methods can help reduce the visibility and smell of smoke, it’s important to note that they may not completely eliminate the evidence. It’s always best to err on the side of caution and be mindful of the potential impact on others.

Remember, smoking on a cruise ship is a privilege, and it’s important to respect the rules and regulations set by the cruise line. By taking steps to disguise the smoke and smell, you can enjoy your smoke while minimizing any inconvenience to those around you.

Minimizing the Risk of Getting Caught

While trying to enjoy a discreet smoke on a cruise ship, it’s essential to take precautions to minimize the risk of getting caught. Here are some tips to help you stay under the radar:

  • Be aware of surveillance cameras: Cruise ships are equipped with surveillance cameras in various areas, including smoking areas. Avoid doing anything that might draw attention to yourself, such as blowing smoke directly towards the cameras or engaging in suspicious behavior.
  • Keep an eye out for crew members: Be vigilant and watch for crew members who may be patrolling the designated smoking areas. If you see them approaching, try to extinguish your cigarette discreetly and act natural to avoid drawing unnecessary attention.
  • Use distractions: Consider utilizing distractions when smoking, such as having a book, magazine, or electronic device on hand. By appearing engrossed in a different activity, you can divert attention away from your smoking.
  • Observe fellow passengers: Pay attention to the behavior of fellow passengers in designated smoking areas. If others are being discreet and cautious, follow their lead to blend in and minimize the risk of attracting unwanted attention.
  • Keep conversations to a minimum: Engaging in loud or lengthy conversations while smoking can draw attention to yourself. Keep conversations brief and avoid drawing unnecessary attention to your activity.

Remember, even with these precautions, there is still a risk of getting caught. It’s important to weigh the consequences and consider the potential penalties imposed by the cruise line for violating their smoking policies.

By being discreet, observant, and aware of your surroundings, you can minimize the risk of getting caught and increase your chances of enjoying a quiet smoke on the cruise ship.

Properly Disposing of Evidence

When smoking on a cruise ship, it’s essential to properly dispose of any evidence to avoid detection. Failing to do so can not only lead to penalties but also create an unpleasant experience for other passengers and crew. Here are some tips for discreetly disposing of smoking-related evidence:

  • Cigarette butts: The most obvious evidence of smoking is cigarette butts. It’s crucial to properly extinguish them and dispose of them in designated ashtrays or smoking receptacles. Avoid throwing them overboard or tossing them in other trash bins, as this can be seen as a violation of shipboard rules.
  • Ashes: To avoid leaving ash residue, consider using a portable ashtray or a small container with a lid to catch the ashes. This will prevent any accidental spills or windblown ashes that could draw attention.
  • Odor control: Use odor-neutralizing products, such as odor-absorbing bags or ziplock bags, to seal in any residual smell. These can help contain the odor while you find an appropriate place to dispose of the smoking-related items.
  • Discreet disposal: When disposing of smoking-related items, choose a time and location that offers minimal visibility. If there are designated smoking areas with dedicated ashtrays or receptacles nearby, use those for the disposal. If not, look for discreet bins in common areas away from non-smoking zones.
  • Maintain cleanliness: As you dispose of smoking-related evidence, ensure that you leave the area clean and free of any signs of smoking. This includes properly disposing of any packaging, empty cigarette packs, or other smoking paraphernalia.

By properly disposing of smoking-related evidence, you can minimize the risk of detection and maintain a respectful environment for all passengers and crew members.

The Importance of Respect and Consideration

While it may be tempting to indulge in smoking on a cruise ship, it’s crucial to prioritize respect and consideration for your fellow passengers and the cruise staff. Here are some important factors to keep in mind:

  • Respect the rules: Adhere to the smoking policies and guidelines set by the cruise line. These policies are in place to ensure the comfort and safety of all passengers. Violating these rules not only risks penalties but also creates a negative experience for others.
  • Avoid inconveniencing others: Be mindful of non-smokers and their preferences. Refrain from smoking in non-designated areas and be aware of the direction of smoke to prevent it from bothering others. Remember that the smell of smoke can be unpleasant for many people, and it’s important to be considerate of their experience.
  • Maintain cleanliness: Whether you smoke in designated areas or in your cabin, take care to clean up after yourself. Dispose of cigarette butts, ashes, and any other smoking-related waste properly. Keeping the environment clean demonstrates respect for both the cruise ship and your fellow passengers.
  • Be discreet: While you may want to enjoy a smoke, it’s important to do so discreetly. Avoid drawing attention to yourself through excessive noise, visible smoke, or suspicious behavior. Being discreet allows you to enjoy your smoke while minimizing the impact on others.
  • Consider alternatives: If you’re concerned about the inconvenience or restrictions of smoking on a cruise ship, consider alternative options such as nicotine patches, gum, or smokeless products. These can help satisfy your cravings without impacting others or violating rules.

Remember, a cruise ship is a shared space, and everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy their vacation without being negatively affected by someone else’s actions. By demonstrating respect and consideration for your fellow passengers and the cruise staff, you can contribute to a positive and enjoyable experience for all on board.

Smoking on a cruise ship can be a challenge, given the strict policies and considerations for the comfort of all passengers. However, with careful planning and respectful behavior, it’s possible to enjoy a discreet smoke while cruising the open seas.

By understanding the cruise ship’s smoking policies, selecting the right cabin, utilizing designated smoking areas, and minimizing the visibility and smell of smoke, you can increase your chances of getting away with smoking on a cruise ship. It’s important to dispose of smoking-related evidence properly and always prioritize respect and consideration for fellow passengers and crew members.

It’s essential to remember that smoking is a personal choice and not everyone onboard may share the same preference. Being mindful of others and following the rules not only helps maintain a harmonious environment but also ensures a pleasant cruise experience for everyone onboard.

Before lighting up, always take into account the potential penalties for violating the cruise line’s smoking policies and respect any non-smoking areas. Alternatively, consider exploring smokeless options to satisfy any cravings without impacting those around you.

Above all, remember that being a responsible and considerate passenger contributes to the overall enjoyment and satisfaction of the cruise for all onboard. So, if you decide to smoke, do so responsibly and with respect for your fellow adventurers.
