ETIAS Spain Requirements for Paraguayan Citizens

Due to a new law going into effect in 2025, all Paraguayans traveling to Spain and the rest of the Schengen Zone countries will be required to apply for the European Travel Information and Authorization System permit (also known as the ETIAS). The ETIAS was originally created back in 2016 as an effective way to secure the borders of the European Union and protect countries from terrorism. This is because every time an applicant applies for an ETIAS, he or she is screened through multiple security databases before given the authorization.

Traveling to Spain from Paraguay with an ETIAS

The Spanish ETIAS for Paraguayans is valid for 3 years and allows travelers to spend up to 90 days in any Schengen country (which includes Spain) in a 180-day period. Paraguayans visiting Spain are allowed to use their ETIAS for the purpose of tourism, business, and medical procedures . However, it is not possible to use the ETIAS as a work permit, and travelers must apply for the appropriate visa if they wish to do so. Travelers who wish to apply for an ETIAS to visit Spain will need to gather the necessary documents, fill out an application form, and wait for an email confirming the approval. The process is quick and simple, and should take no more than 10 minutes. Here is what all travelers need to know about the ETIAS before they apply.

ETIAS Application for Paraguay Citizens

Paraguayan citizens will be pleased to know that they can obtain an ETIAS authorization program in less than 30 minutes — and from the comfort of their own home! Applicants do not have to visit a local embassy, have an interview with an officer, or fill out a pile of paperwork. Everything is quick, simple, and done on the internet.

The first step is to apply for an ETIAS to visit Spain from Paraguay. This can be done by starting an ETIAS application. The form will ask applicants a few questions about their personal information and some security questions.

Applicants will be asked a number of questions regarding their personal details (first name, last name, nationality), passport information (passport serial number, date of issue/expiry), and contact information.

The next section will contain a few questions regarding the applicant’s previous trips to Europe and about their criminal history. The answers to these questions will then be checked against multiple European databases, such as Interpol, in order to pre-screen the applicant and see if they are a security risk.

After applicants have completed the application, they will be prompted to pay the application fee with a valid debit or credit card.

Most applications will be processed immediately, and a confirmation email containing the ETIAS will be sent to the applicant. However, in some cases it may take up to 3 business days in case of delay or public holidays.

Applicants are advised to print a copy of their ETIAS authorization email so that they can show it to the immigration officers when entering Spain.

Passport and Documents Needed

The ETIAS Spain requirements for Paraguayans are very simple and only requires one important document in order to fill out the application: a Paraguay-issued passport.

Please note that the applicant’s Paraguayan passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the date that they plan to leave the Schengen Area.

The other requirements include a device such as a smartphone, tablet, or computer, that can connect to the internet, as applicants will need to use it in order to submit the application. Please note that applicants should have a valid and working email address that they will use in order to receive notifications about the status of their ETIAS authorization.

Applicants will also need to have a valid form of payment , such as a credit card or debit card, in order to pay the ETIAS processing fee.

Paraguay travel advice

Latest updates: Health - editorial update

Last updated: May 6, 2024 10:36 ET

On this page

Safety and security, entry and exit requirements, laws and culture, natural disasters and climate, paraguay - exercise a high degree of caution.

Exercise a high degree of caution in Paraguay due to increasing crime.

Petty Crime

Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, occurs frequently across the country.

Criminals have been known to observe, follow and then rob victims who have made withdrawals at ATMs.

Crime rates are higher in Asunción and greater Asunción neighborhoods of:

  • Fernando de la Mora
  • Mariano Roque Alonso
  • San Lorenzo
  • Villa Elisa

During your trip:

  • ensure that your personal belongings, including your passport and other travel documents, are secure at all times
  • avoid showing signs of wealth
  • avoid carrying large sums of cash or unnecessary valuables
  • avoid walking alone after dark
  • be extra cautious when withdrawing cash from ATMs
  • if you're robbed, hand over cash, electronic devices and valuables without resistance
  • don't leave bags, luggage or other valuable items in the car, and never in plain view
  • keep your vehicle windows closed and doors locked at all times, especially if stopped

Violent crime

Violent crime is known to occur.

Incidents include, namely:

  • armed robberies
  • car jacking

Muggings by armed motorcyclists can occur day or night.

Robbers sometimes dress as service people to gain access to homes. Do not let servicepeople in unless you have a confirmed appointment.

Illegal armed groups

Violent crime by illegal armed groups has increased throughout the country in recent years.

Drug and arms trafficking operate along the Tri-border area of:

  • Brazil, especially from Pedro Juan Caballero to Ciudad del Este along Paraguay’s eastern border

Drugs and arms smuggling pose security threats in the departments of:

  • Altó Paraná
  • Canindeyú

A small armed guerrilla group known as Ejército del Pueblo Paraguayo (Paraguayan people’s army - EPP) has kidnapped for a ransom. It operates in:

  • the northern part of the department of San Pedro
  • the southern part of the department of Concepción
  • Canindeyú and Amambay departments in the east

Although the EPP typically targets residents rather than visitors, be extra cautious if you travel to these areas.

Illegal armed groups pose a risk to travellers. Tourists are not usually targeted, but you could find yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Virtual kidnappings

Virtual Kidnappings may occur. An individual or criminal organization contacts you by phone and demands immediate payment for the return of a “kidnapped” family member or friend. No actual kidnapping takes place.

Criminals use various means of gathering information about potential victims, including using social media sites or eavesdropping on conversations.

If you are perceived to be wealthy, you could be at risk.

Spiked food and drinks

Snacks, beverages, gum and cigarettes may contain drugs that could put you at risk of sexual assault and robbery.

  • Be wary of accepting these items from new acquaintances
  • Never leave food or drinks unattended or in the care of strangers

Demonstrations

Demonstrations and road blockades occur occasionally. Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

  • avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
  • follow the instructions of local authorities
  • monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

Mass gatherings (large-scale events)

Women’s Safety

Women travelling alone may be subject to some forms of harassment or verbal abuse.

Advice for women travellers

Water shortages

Interruptions to the water supply occur occasionally, including in Asunción. Water shortages can last for weeks in the region of Chaco and drinking water may be difficult to find.

If you’re in Paraguay:

  • keep supplies of bottled water and water purification tablets on hand
  • expect limits on the availability of drinkable water
  • monitor local media to stay informed of the evolving situation

Food shortages

Food shortages may occur, particularly in Chaco region.

  • Plan accordingly
  • Keep a supply of food

Power outages

Power outages may occur even in big cities.

Power outages could impact some essential services, such as:

  • public transportation, including flights
  • medical services
  • the public water supply
  • telecommunications
  • banking transactions
  • the purchase of basic necessities

Fuel shortages

Gas stations are rare in the Chaco region. If you are driving in this area:

  • always carry a cell phone, power banks, chargers and a list of emergency numbers handy
  • keep a sufficient supply of water, food, medication and fuel on hand for several days

Telecommunications networks

Mobile telephone services outside urban areas could be limited.

Rivers can be dangerous as many have strong currents. Do not swim in the River Paraguay, which is highly polluted. Toxic dumping in rivers is commonly practiced and poses a health risk to swimmers.

  • Never swim alone
  • Always maintain a safe distance from boats and restricted areas
  • Consult residents and tour operators for information on possible hazards and safe swimming areas
  • Don't dive in unfamiliar waters as hidden rocks or shallow water can cause serious injury or death

Water safety abroad

Adventure tourism

Because of heavy rainfall and limited infrastructure, you should carefully plan your hiking trips to remote areas.

The Chaco wilderness is a harsh environment where you may encounter dangerous animals.

If you intend on hiking:

  • never do so alone
  • always hire an experienced guide from a reputable company and make accommodations arrangements in advance
  • buy travel insurance that includes helicopter rescue and medical evacuation
  • ensure that your physical condition is good enough to meet the challenges of your activity
  • ensure that you’re properly equipped and well-informed about weather and other conditions that may pose a hazard
  • inform a family member or friend of your itinerary, including when you expect to be back to camp
  • refrain from using facilities or equipment if you have doubts on their safety
  • obtain detailed information on trekking routes before setting out and do not venture off marked trails

Indigenous peoples

Visiting most areas populated by indigenous peoples should present no danger, apart from the northern area of Chaco Paraguayo, where the Ayoreo woodland group lives. Some Ayoreos may perceive outsiders as a threat.

Road safety

Road safety is poor throughout the country. Road accidents have increased over the past few years, especially with motorcycles. The number of traffic accidents tends to increase during the holiday season from December to January. There is no roadside assistance on most highways.

Driving is also dangerous due to:

  • lack of traffic signs
  • large potholes
  • insufficient lighting or poorly functioning traffic lights
  • stray animals
  • poorly maintained vehicles, some without proper lights
  • drivers not always respecting traffic laws

Avoid driving at night.

Road conditions

Outside of highways, most roads are not paved.

Driving conditions may be hazardous during the rainy season, December to April.

Public transportation

Public transportation is readily available for urban and intercity travel.

Vehicles lack maintenance and safety equipment. Bus accidents are frequent. Buses travel through high-crime areas leaving you at risk of theft.

Taxis are considered safe but often do not have functioning seat belts.

Taxis are available at marked taxi stops.

  • Ask for your cab at the front test if you are using hotel services
  • Note the driver’s name on his or her photo identification card and license number

This section contains information on possible health risks and restrictions regularly found or ongoing in the destination. Follow this advice to lower your risk of becoming ill while travelling. Not all risks are listed below.

Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic preferably 6 weeks before you travel to get personalized health advice and recommendations.

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary.

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. People can get hepatitis A if they ingest contaminated food or water, eat foods prepared by an infectious person, or if they have close physical contact (such as oral-anal sex) with an infectious person, although casual contact among people does not spread the virus.

Practise  safe food and water precautions and wash your hands often. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers to areas where hepatitis A is present.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.

 The flu occurs worldwide.

  •  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
  •  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
  •  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round.

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

Yellow fever   is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

  • There is a risk of yellow fever in this country.

Country Entry Requirement*

  • Proof of vaccination is required if you are arriving from Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, or Venezuela or have transited through an airport in one of these countries.

Recommendation

  • Vaccination is recommended depending on your itinerary.
  • Contact a designated  Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre  well in advance of your trip to arrange for vaccination.
  • Discuss travel plans, activities, and destinations with a health care professional.
  • Protect yourself from mosquito bites .

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres in Canada * It is important to note that  country entry requirements  may not reflect your risk of yellow fever at your destination. It is recommended that you contact the nearest  diplomatic or consular office  of the destination(s) you will be visiting to verify any additional entry requirements.

In this destination, rabies is carried by dogs and some wildlife, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal. While travelling, take precautions , including keeping your distance from animals (including free-roaming dogs), and closely supervising children.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional. Rabies treatment is often available in this destination.

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who are at high risk of exposure (e.g., occupational risk such as veterinarians and wildlife workers, children, adventure travellers and spelunkers, and others in close contact with animals).

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

  • Learn more about food and water precautions to take to avoid getting sick by visiting our eat and drink safely abroad page. Remember: Boil it, cook it, peel it, or leave it!
  • Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
  • Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs.

Travellers' diarrhea is the most common illness affecting travellers. It is spread from eating or drinking contaminated food or water.

Risk of developing travellers' diarrhea increases when travelling in regions with poor standards of hygiene and sanitation. Practise safe food and water precautions.

The most important treatment for travellers' diarrhea is rehydration (drinking lots of fluids). Carry oral rehydration salts when travelling.

Typhoid   is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Risk is higher among children, travellers going to rural areas, travellers visiting friends and relatives or those travelling for a long period of time.

Travellers visiting regions with a risk of typhoid, especially those exposed to places with poor sanitation, should speak to a health care professional about vaccination.

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

  • Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
  • Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
  • Minimize exposure to insects
  • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

To learn more about how you can reduce your risk of infection and disease caused by bites, both at home and abroad, visit our insect bite prevention page.

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

There is a risk of chikungunya in this country.  The risk may vary between regions of a country.  Chikungunya is a virus spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Chikungunya can cause a viral disease that typically causes fever and pain in the joints. In some cases, the joint pain can be severe and last for months or years.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times. There is no vaccine available for chikungunya.

  • In this country,   dengue  is a risk to travellers. It is a viral disease spread to humans by mosquito bites.
  • Dengue can cause flu-like symptoms. In some cases, it can lead to severe dengue, which can be fatal.
  • The level of risk of dengue changes seasonally, and varies from year to year. The level of risk also varies between regions in a country and can depend on the elevation in the region.
  • Mosquitoes carrying dengue typically bite during the daytime, particularly around sunrise and sunset.
  • Protect yourself from mosquito bites . There is no vaccine or medication that protects against dengue.

Zika virus is a risk in this country.

Zika virus is primarily spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can also be sexually transmitted. Zika virus can cause serious birth defects.

  • Prevent mosquito bites at all times.
  • Use condoms correctly or avoid sexual contact, particularly if you are pregnant.

If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, you should discuss the potential risks of travelling to this destination with your health care provider. You may choose to avoid or postpone travel.

For more information, see Zika virus: Pregnant or planning a pregnancy.

American trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease)   is a risk in this country. It is caused by a parasite spread by infected triatomine bugs. The infection can be inactive for decades, but humans can eventually develop complications causing disability and even death.

Risk is generally low for most travellers. Protect yourself from triatomine bugs, which are active at night, by using mosquito nets if staying in poorly-constructed housing. There is no vaccine available for Chagas disease.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

  •   washing your hands often
  • avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
  • avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.

Medical services and facilities

Good health care is available in major cities. Quality of care varies greatly throughout the country.

Medical facilities will often expect immediate cash payment for services.

Emergency and ambulance services are very limited outside of major cities.

Medical services are mostly in Spanish.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Travel health and safety

Medication

Some prescription medications may not be available in Paraguay.

If you take prescription medication, you’re responsible for determining their legality in the country.

  • Bring sufficient quantities of your medication with you
  • Always keep your medication in the original container
  • Pack them in your carry-on luggage
  • Carry a copy of your prescriptions

Keep in Mind...

The decision to travel is the sole responsibility of the traveller. The traveller is also responsible for his or her own personal safety.

Be prepared. Do not expect medical services to be the same as in Canada. Pack a   travel health kit , especially if you will be travelling away from major city centres.

You must abide by local laws.

Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad .

Drugs and alcohol

Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. Convicted offenders can expect jail sentences and heavy fines.

The consumption of alcohol under 20 years of age is illegal.

Travel and your sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics

Dual citizenship

Dual citizenship is not legally recognized in Paraguay.

If local authorities consider you a citizen of Paraguay, they may refuse to grant you access to Canadian consular services. This will prevent us from providing you with those services.

Travellers with dual citizenship

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Paraguay.

If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Paraguay, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Paraguayan court.

If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Paraguay to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children’s Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies.

Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country’s judicial affairs.

Investments

Disputes related to property acquisition or other investments are costly and take time to resolve.

If you plan on buying property, or making other investments in Paraguay:

  • seek legal advice in Canada and in Paraguay before making commitments
  • choose your own lawyer
  • avoid hiring a lawyer recommended by a seller

Penalties for drinking and driving are severe.

The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.00%.  There are regular police checks to perform breathalyzer tests. If a police officer suspects you of drinking and driving, they could confiscate your driver's licence on the spot. If you’re convicted, you can expect heavy fines.

Police regularly stop cars to check vehicle and driving documents. You should ensure you rent a car from a reputable company and you sign a rental contract that includes car insurance.

You must carry an international driving permit.

International Driving Permit

Traffic regulation is different from Canada as the legal age to drive is 18.

Identification

Local authorities may request to see your ID at any time.

  • Carry valid identification or a photocopy of it at all times
  • Keep a photocopy of your passport in a safe place in case it’s lost or seized
  • Keep a digital copy of your ID and travel documents

It is illegal to hunt in Paraguay. Convicted offenders can expect jail sentences and heavy fines.

The currency of Paraguay is the guaraní (PYG).

You may be requested to show ID when paying with a credit or debit card.

Paying with credit or with debit card is rarely accepted in the Chaco region.

Canadian currency is not widely accepted. Only new US$ 100 bills can be exchanged.  Use registered banks and exchange bureaus as fake bank notes are common.

El Niño

The complex weather phenomenon called El Niño happens at irregular intervals of 2 to 7 years. El Niño generally generates heavy rainfalls, occurring at the same time as the rainy season from December to March.

  • Keep informed of regional weather forecasts before and during your travels, and plan accordingly.
  • Ensure you have adequate insurance to cover the consequences of such events, including the disruption of travel plans.

Rainy season

The rainy season extends from December to March. The eastern part of the country is more at risks to floods.

Seasonal flooding between November and December can hamper overland travel and reduce the provision of essential services. Roads may become impassable. Bridges, buildings, and infrastructure may be damaged, particularly in the Chaco region.

  • Monitor local media and weather reports for the latest updates, including those on road conditions
  • Stay away from flooded areas
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities

Tornadoes, cyclones, hurricanes, typhoons and monsoons

Bush and forest fires are common between mid-July to December particularly in:

  • Concepción

The air quality in areas near active fires may deteriorate due to heavy smoke. In case of a major fire:

  • stay away from the affected area, particularly if you suffer from respiratory ailments
  • always follow the instructions of local emergency services personnel, including any evacuation order
  • monitor local media for up-to-date information on the situation

The western region of the country can experience periods of prolonged droughts. Droughts lead to water supply shortages, including in Asunción.

Flying to Spain? There is a new passport travel advisory

T hose who have lost their passport abroad know just how much of a headache getting the required travel documents to continue on one’s journey (or even get back home) can be.

Having to navigate lines at the embassy, prove one’s identity and citizenship without documentation and then pay hefty fees to get one’s  passport replacement application  expedited is not how anyone wants to spend limited time in a beautiful city. That said, accidents do happen — the U.S. State Department estimates that around 300,000 Americans lose their passport abroad every year.

Related: There is (finally) some good news for those who need to renew a passport

In some countries, there is also the heightened risk of pickpockets that target not just wallets but also passports. Barcelona regularly comes up among cities with the highest numbers of pickpockets in the world and, over in the United Kingdom, the British Foreign Office is reminding travelers that they must either renew a passport or “apply for an emergency travel document” if separated from theirs.

New advisory: You ‘must renew or apply for emergency travel document’

While citizens of a country will generally not be denied entry when arriving at their border without a passport, not having proper documentation could prevent one from boarding a flight or going further on one’s journey within the foreign country.

More on travel:

“If your passport is lost or stolen, you must renew your passport or apply for an emergency travel document,” the British government agency writes in the updated “Safety And Security” section of its advisory for Spain. “You cannot use a police report to leave Spain.”

Spanish resorts like Ibiza and Majorca are particularly popular among British holidayers and the Foreign Office estimates that over 15 million of its citizens come to Spain every year.

These are some of the other things to know before heading to Spain

“Thieves use distraction techniques and often work in teams,” the British Foreign Office writes further while also reminding travelers to “take care of passports, money and personal belongings .... Do not carry all your valuables in one place. Keep a copy of the photo page of your passport somewhere safe.”

Also on the travel advisory website for the country, the Foreign Office warns visitors about the risk of terrorist attacks at many sites and attractions popular with tourists. The U.S. State Department has a similar warning for both Spain and a number of other European countries such as Germany and France.

At the start of May, it also raised its  travel advisory rating for the country from one to two (four is the highest level and reserved for active war zones and countries with authoritarian governments) amid heightened terrorist risk and intelligence about possible plots that the German government has been working to prevent. Spain is also a Level Two country over similar concerns around terrorism and street crime even if both countries are very safe to visit on the whole.

“Terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in Spain,” the State Department writes. “Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, local government facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, major sporting and cultural events, educational institutions, airports, and other public areas.”

Entry requirements

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Spain set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Spanish Embassy in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Spain.

Passport validity requirements

Spain follows Schengen area rules . Your passport must:

  • have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it may have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago
  • have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area , which includes Spain, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel:

  • as a tourist
  • to visit family or friends
  • to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
  • for short-term studies or training

The requirements for working in Spain are different.

If you’re travelling to other Schengen countries as well, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day visa-free limit. Visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days.

If you are visiting Spain and need to extend your visa-free stay for exceptional reasons, such as a medical emergency, you must  apply to the immigration authorities (‘Extranjería’) (in Spanish).

Make sure you get your passport stamped on entry and exit.

If you’re a visitor, border guards will look at your entry and exit stamps to check you have not overstayed the 90-day visa-free limit for the Schengen area.

If your passport is missing a stamp, show evidence of when and where you entered or left the Schengen area (for example, boarding passes or tickets) and ask the border guards to add the date and location in your passport.

British nationals living in Spain do not need their passports to be stamped. Actively show your proof of residence, such as the foreigner’s identity card (‘la tarjeta de identidad de extranjero’ or ‘TIE’), when presenting your passport at Spanish border control.

At Spanish border control, you may need to show:

  • a return or onward ticket
  • proof of your travel insurance
  • you have enough money for your stay - the amount varies depending on your accommodation
  • a hotel booking confirmation or proof of address if you’re staying at your own property
  • an invitation or proof of address if staying with a third party, friends or family, such as a ‘carta de invitation’ completed by your hosts

Using the e-gates

Use the desks staffed by border officers. If you’re aged 18 or over, and airport staff instruct you to, you may be able to use e-gates when they are working.

If you use an e-gate, make sure you get your passport stamped.

Staying longer than 90 days in a 180-day period

To stay longer, you must meet the Spanish government’s entry requirements . If you’re in Spain with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

Read more about passport stamping if you live in Spain .

If you cannot return to the UK before your visa-free limit expires,  contact the Spanish government’s national information service . Dial 060 from a Spanish phoneline (in Spanish, with English speaking operators available).

Travelling between Spain and Gibraltar

Spanish border checks can cause delays when crossing between Spain and Gibraltar. If you are travelling to Spain through Gibraltar, check the travel advice for entry requirements for Gibraltar .

There is no charge to enter or leave Gibraltar. Do not hand over money to anybody claiming there is a charge.

Unaccompanied minors

Spanish law considers anyone aged 17 and under to be a minor. If an unaccompanied minor comes to the attention of the Spanish authorities (particularly in connection with criminal incidents or when in hospital), they will be considered vulnerable and may be taken to a minor’s centre until a parent or guardian is found.

Vaccine requirements

For details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Spain guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about what goods can be taken into and out of Spain (PDF) . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking food into Spain

You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into EU countries . There are some exceptions such as powdered baby milk, baby food and special foods or pet feed required for medical reasons.

Taking money into Spain

Declare cash or travellers cheques if the value is 10,000 euros or more. You will get a certified declaration to show you brought it in with you. If you do not, your money could be seized when you leave.

Transport and best ways to travel around Paraguay

There are many ways to get to and around Paraguay . Here are some tips for navigating the country in a safe and efficient way.

How to get to Paraguay

Some airlines that fly to Paraguay are TAM and LATAM, via Brazil or other South American Nations. From London, flying takes about 16 hours (including stopovers) and from New York about 13 hours (including stopovers).

Most people enter Paraguay by long-distance bus from Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, or São Paulo, for example. Another easy way to get to Paraguay is by taking a ferry from Iguazú Falls in Argentina.

Arrival and immigration tips for Paraguay

The airport in Asunción is open 24 hours and is small and secure. However, if you enter by land or boat , make sure to keep your luggage secure, as illegal border trafficking is prevalent and can attract crime.

Always check the stamps in your visa after going through customs, it can happen that a mistake is made and you do not get the expected expiration date.

Bus network in Paraguay

The main means of transport in Paraguay are buses (called colectivos by the locals), for which tickets are cheap and service relatively efficient. Some of the most popular intercity bus companies leaving from Asunción bus station are Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and La Encarnacena.

Taxis in Paraguay

Taxi rides are generally expensive compared to other services. In Asunción, the cost of the ride is determined by the meter but in other cities and areas is different, where you will need to bargain and agree on the price beforehand in order to avoid overpaying. A good recommendation is to ask your hotel concierge to guide you regarding the real and fair costs of the fare.

Driving in Paraguay

There are some major roads that connect the cities of Asunción, Encarnación, and Ciudad del Este. However, it is not recommended to self-drive . Traffic laws are generally not respected by drivers, and road signs are often absent. Rural roads are generally unpaved and driving can be dangerous in the rainy season.

Safety in Paraguay

Paraguay is overall a safe country, however, there are some risks mainly related to petty crime, smuggling, and corrupt police, therefore applying some basic precaution and safety measures is advised.

Pickpockets - Street crime is common, especially in the major cities, so keep your belongings in a safe spot and try not to carry valuables while sightseeing.

Public transport and taxis - There have been reports of thefts taking place on buses and taxis. Take precautions when on buses and try not to stop taxis in the street but via phone call with a registered company.

Terrorism - There is a low risk of terrorism in Paraguay.

Scams - Scams are common in Paraguay so always be careful with suspicious individuals like unauthorized bus ticket vendors in the Asunción bus terminal, or people offering to play card games with you to make some easy money.

Weather in Paraguay

There are two very distinct seasons in Paraguay, hot and cold.

The hot season runs from October to April with an average temperature of 35°C (95°F), but the hottest months are November to February when temperatures can hit 45°C (110°F), mostly in Northwestern Paraguay which has a tropical climate.

During the cold season, which runs from May to September cold air from Antarctica blows and lowers the temperature to between 6°C (42°F) and 21°C (70°F) on average. The coldest month is July with a minimum of 9°C (48°F).

There is no specific rainy season in Paraguay, but storms are more frequent in October and November which can make traveling more difficult. The best time to visit Paraguay is from May to September when there is a more temperate and pleasant climate.

Must do and see in Paraguay

Asunción - The capital and main city of the country, and one of the oldest South American cities. In downtown Asunción, you will find the most interesting historical sites such as Casa de la Independencia Museum (which is Paraguay's oldest building), the Panteon de Los Heroes, Palacio de Los Lopez, Asunción Cathedral, and the National Congress building.

Ciudad del Este - The second-largest city and popular gateway to the country from Iguazú Falls. It is very famous for cheap shopping, therefore the border is usually frequented by Argentinians and Brazilians chasing after good deals.

Encarnación - At the border with Argentina and a good spot to start exploring the Southeast of the country since it is close to some beautiful small towns.

* Chaco Lodge - A forest reserve, home to a salt lake that is famous for its flamingos and a great place for camping.

Concepción - Located by the Paraguay River in the center of the country, used as a gateway to the beaches of the river.

Trinidad Jesuit Ruins - This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers striking views of the red-sandstone structure in ruins that were inhabited by the Guaraní people after the expulsion of the Jesuits. It lasted until the fall of the church's dome, which was interpreted as a sign from God to abandon the site.

Typical Paraguayan food to try

Paraguayan "Soup" - Sopa Paraguaya is actually a solid soup made out of cornbread, probably the only solid soup in the world but very worth trying.

Payagua Mascada - This means chewing gum for dogs in the local language, but it is better than it sounds. It is a tortilla made out of cassava and beef.

Empanadas - A very famous street food, also in other South American countries. The Paraguayan empanada is a fried and breaded pastry stuffed with meat or egg.

Vaccine information for Paraguay

Even though the following vaccines are not mandatory to enter Paraguay, the government recommends travelers are vaccinated against hepatitis, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies, and COVID-19.

In spite of your vaccination status, there are no longer any specific entry requirements for COVID-19.

Exploring Paraguay's UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Discover Paraguay’s history at the UNESCO-listed Jesuit ruins of La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue . Spanish invaders established Jesuit missions to 'civilize' the indigenous tribes in the 17th century, creating entire towns within their red stone walls.

'Natives House' rooms have eight arches facing the plaza. The stone galleries remind us of impressive Roman bridges or aqueducts. You can visit this archeological site from the Iguazú Falls in Argentina, by taking a bus directly to Trinidad.

The site is accessible from the nearby city of Encarnacion by any number of buses traveling frequently on the highway to Ciudad del Este. From the highway it's about a 10-minute walk. Entrance is less than USD 0.50.

Brits issued fresh passport warning if you're flying to Spain

Brits issued fresh passport warning if you're flying to Spain

Fresh passport advice has been issued ahead of the summer holidays.

Tom Earnshaw

Tom Earnshaw

The British government has issued a fresh passport warning to anyone travelling to Spain from the United Kingdom.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office regularly updates travel advice for countries around the world, issuing important information to those heading overseas. Just last month it issued a 'strict' warning to those travelling to Australia .

Advice ranges from warnings and insurance issues to entry requirements.

Today (17 May), the Foreign Office has issued an update to its official advice when it comes to visiting Spain - which is something we're going to say is more important than most updates given Brits love to head to the country more than anywhere else in the world.

It comes after the European Union issues fresh guidance to Brits on new EU travel rules that could ban you from the mainland continent for three years if you fall foul.

More than 15 million of us jetted off to Spain in the last year; more than double the second most visited country on the list (sorry, France).

There's already a good few warnings and advice in place when it comes to heading to Spain. For one, make sure you're aware of the 'six drink rule' . And more recently we have seen the introduction of a total booze ban between 9.30pm and 8.00am the next day on some of the country's most popular islands.

Brits love a Spanish beach. (Getty Stock Images)

Well, the new advice from the Foreign Office has nothing to do with booze. But it could become extremely relevant if you have one too many.

Issuing an update to its safety and security page, it has highlighted an important piece of advice if you so happen to lose your passport or have it stolen.

It'll happen to an unfortunate few, so it is best to be prepared as to what to do next.

The important point being stressed by the government is to make sure you have the appropriate documents to get back home.

The government has issued new advice. (Getty stock photo)

"You cannot use a police report to leave Spain," the government said in the update.

"If your passport is lost or stolen, you must renew your passport or apply for an emergency travel document."

If you have your passport stolen abroad, don't panic. Make sure you report it to the local police where you should request a physical police report which you might need when communicating with the British Embassy when applying for a new passport.

Take note. (Matt Cardy/Getty Images)

For those losing their passport, you'll need to sort out an emergency travel document. The Foreign Office says: "An emergency travel document lets you travel from abroad if you need to travel urgently and cannot use your UK passport. It is usually only valid for one single or return journey. You can travel through a maximum of five countries."

They come at a cost of £100 and then you'll have to pay for a new passport when you get back, so it's not ideal.
