Difference between a photo tour & workshops.

There is a typical question to understand what are the differences between both types. All our trips are focus to teach all participants , but as you can see in our list of trips, you can find different kinds of trips.

For us, teach & travel is essential on all trips. But we differentiate the tour according to the conditions we can find. Basically, a Photo Workshop is more focused to teach you than showing you a place , so the itinerary can change according to great opportunities that can appear through the trip.  A Photo Tour is focused to follow the itinerary and visit all places always that weather doesn’t make us change plans.

 Photography Escapades

Photography Field Trips

Photography field trips planning purpose is a must. Before you head out, plan what types of subjects you want to photograph. What is the Story or purpose of this trip.

Photography Escapades Field Trips

Photography Gear.

Understand the location., reseach the web., preset your camera..

Choose what gear to take for your trip. Always test your camera and your gear well in advance to avoid disappointment.

If you have a multi lens camera, choose the appropriate lens for the trip. If it is a local trip then take another lens preferably a zoom lens, just in case another subject comes up.

Check your batteries and sd cards for functionabilty.

The gear you take will need to fit the purpose of the shoot.

Understand the Location:

The location you choose will probably be the bacground of the photo.

Often the location is the subject in itself, especially for travel and landscape photography. Therefore, when you plan photo trips, you need to find those places to take photos near you’re going.

Once you have found your perfect location for a photography shoot near you, it is a good idea to find the best time to visit. Timing the shoot with great light is important for any type of photography. It is very important for landscape photography.

Research on the Web:

To help you for a specific location Google Map and Google Earth will provide with information on the location.

If your destination is a country town don't go anyfurther than the Information Centre, the volunteers there will well inform you.

The motel you booked into will have brochures about locations, attractions and events.

Preset your Camera:

If you know what subject you will be photographing, preset your camera to the appropriate settings keep in mind that when you arrive at your destination these settings could change but not as much as if the camera was at its default settings. It will give you a head start and will be within the setting range for the required shoot.

Learn how to take great pictures before you go on that expensive trip! Learn how to use your camera in the field, not in a classroom.

Fun. Joy. Pride.

Taking good pictures is fun, makes you happy, and fills you with pride over the memory you have just created.  And now, with cell phones and cameras equipped with Wi-Fi, it is easier than ever to immediately share these images with friends and family.

Established in 1999, Washington Photo Safari™ is one of the nation’s leading providers of photography training field trips. We offer over 150+ unique itineraries, with two-hour, half-day, and full-day DC photo tours every week, all year long. These sessions are for photographers at any skill level with any kind of camera, digital or film.

See. Click. Learn.

That’s what we do for you at Washington Photo Safari. We help you see images in a new way, take you to new places, and help you improve your composition.

Then we guide as you click with any camera, whether it be your cell phone or a complex DSLR, helping you use all the features you paid for on your camera. And, yes, we give smartphone-friendly photo tours!

Finally, we review the pictures you have just taken, helping you learn from your mistakes, and giving you hands-on instruction as you retake the photos. We prefer to do this in the field, not in a classroom so that you learn by doing.

WPS is Proud to be Highly Rated Across Review Platforms!

I signed up for Washington Photo Safari to learn basic photography. I wanted to have fun doing it so I signed up and I made a great decision. David, the tour guide, knows photography and knows how to teach it and practices what he teaches. On top of that, he's lived in DC for 45 years and knows the city and will share all of its secrets with you.

If you are visiting DC this is a great way to see the sights and learn a little bit about your camera and take home some great memories. It's also a great way for locals to take an afternoon and low down and relax! David is a great host and very personable and is willing to share his knowledge for photographers of all skill levels.

David was a great guide! You can tell he has a passion for photography, and patient when it comes to teaching. I am an experienced photographer, but I even learned a trick! Thanks, David! My friend and I definitely had fun taking pictures in Georgetown. The Safaris in DC are worth every penny and I would highly recommend them to others!

My daughter & I learned a lot about taking photos and all the great features of our cameras. David was great working with both of us, her being a novice and me who started back in the days of film. Highly recommend and already thinking about what class to take next.

I have been taking different workshops over the years with WPS as beginner, now 15 years later, as an enthusiast. They cater to all range of photographers, and each time I learn something new. David Luria and the staff are great and they know all the best spots.

Though I have some photography experience, I still learned more than I expected. David was very thorough, provided excellent direction and we had an enjoyable time seeing the monuments through new eyes. I highly recommend.

I have attended eight workshops with David over the years. The reason I continue going to these workshops is that his tours are truly unique, whether indoors or outdoors. His interests are varied and his talents are superb. Photographing inside the Library of Congress is something I would not have thought about. Walking the colorful neighborhoods in DC, the Tidal Basin with Cherry blossoms, the zoo with pandas, the monuments in the area and so many more unique places both are the reasons that keep me coming back for more! And I live 3 1/2 hours away. Thanks, David!!

Business of Photography - Participant comments

I just wanted to thank you again for all of the information that you shared with us in class. I have been trying to find someone who would give me insight into the real world of professional photography. Your class was exactly what I was looking for. The workbook is very good - I will have to work my way through it. I hope to take some more of your classes or go to some of your workshops very soon. Thanks again for info. --Stan.... / Business of Photography

Thanks again...I very much enjoyed my two days of photographic immersion. You are so incredibly knowledgeable. One of my prior co- workers asked how your seminar was. I told her to imagine my explaining our business in two days. ..ha! She quickly understood. The amount of information to process is mammoth, but then...I have always known that. I want to do this...thank you for helping get me started. And...just for the record...I have travelled too!! HA! Hope to see you again soon in another workshop or other photographic arena. --Judy.... / Business of Photography

First, let me start by saying that the seminar over the weekend was chock full o' information I had never even considered as becoming a professional photographer. Your insight into the business and your completely open and honest explanation was absolutely well receipted and appreciated by those in the class. It was a truly enjoyable session and your no-non-sense approach to teaching, which is much like my approach, was refreshing, engaging, and all around FUN! I feel quite honored and lucky to have met such a well-respected and successful professional as yourself. I do look forward to fostering a closer personal and professional relationship with you. --Heather .... / Business of Photography

I wanted to thank you for an absolutely brilliant seminar this weekend. I have a great appreciation and respect for an instructor that comes to class with a well-defined outline of topics to cover. And to have the instructor follow that outline with such ease definitely attests to the vast expertise you have. I also appreciate your openness to sharing resources. This is one of the best seminars I have attended and certainly the one that I have gained the most information from. I still cannot believe how much information you covered in two days. --Donna .... / Business of Photography

It is an outdoor photography workshop with plenty of practical exercises in location.

Exposure is the primary key in photography

Although photography has many rules, Exposure is an essential part of it. Photography Field Trip focuses on Exposure and how to achieve correct Exposure in any light condition.

All digital cameras are capable of taking outstanding pictures. However, you need to know how to control the camera’s settings. For instance, to capture better images, you need to learn shooting in manual or semi-automatic modes. Photography Field Trip equips you with the know-how of shooting perfect exposed photographs every time.

Prerequisites:

Participants must bring a digital camera that has manual exposure control settings. This workshop is suitable for intermediate to advanced users. Basic knowledge of the camera settings is required.  [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”23867″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” title=”Exposure”][vc_column_text] We're sorry, but all tickets sales have ended because the event is expired. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Photography Field Trip” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:30|text_align:left|color:%23f2571f” google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:700%20bold%20italic%3A700%3Aitalic” css_animation=”lightSpeedIn”][vc_custom_heading text=”Composition Edition” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:50|text_align:left|color:%238a31e2″ google_fonts=”font_family:Lato%3A100%2C100italic%2C300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic%2C900%2C900italic|font_style:700%20bold%20italic%3A700%3Aitalic” css_animation=”bounceInRight”][vc_column_text] The composition skills are the artistic part of photography. Regardless of the type of camera that you use, a well-composed image is always pleasant to the eyes. This photography field trip is an outdoor event, and all camera makes and models, even  smartphones , are welcome!

Discussing Composition Rules

There are many rules for composition, which can be somehow confusing. However, these rules are pretty simple and easy to remember when you learn the ideas behind them. In this workshop, you have the opportunity to learn and apply these rules for better landscape images.

There are no requirements for the Composition Photography Field Trip. All you need is a digital camera and the will for capturing better images. You can use even your smartphones if you wish!  [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”24157″ img_size=”600×400″ add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded” title=”Composition = Pleasing Photos”][vc_column_text] We're sorry, but all tickets sales have ended because the event is expired. • About Kevin Gourley

Colorado, Rocky Mountain National Park, Fun Destination Photography Workshop, Many photographers

Participant Comment: “The natural  beauty  of RMNP was enhanced by Kevin’s  knowledge  of the park and locations that were custom picked for  great photographic shots . Kevin’s calm, patient and knowledgeable teaching style meant that everyone, at whatever level they were at, felt comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, learning from them and then getting  immeasurably better pictures  as a result. The  improvement in my photography from Day 1 to Day 4 was unbelievable . I came thinking the auto settings on my camera really took better pictures than I did, and I left seeing and believing that the pictures I now understood how to take were  vastly superior  to anything the camera could capture in auto mode. It was a  5 star experience from beginning to end. “ “”Having attended Kevin Gourley’s Rocky Mountain Workshop, I can assure you that it was  one of the best Wildlife Photography experiences I have ever had . Importantly, not only are the photo ops incredible, Kevin makes the  entire trip seamlessly  smooth from accommodations, restaurant choices and reservations, to travel to the various locations. To top off the experience, Kevin also provides  excellent instruction in photography  enabling even the most amateur photographer the ability to learn and to come away with  excellent images that anyone would treasure for a lifetime .”

55 Simple and Memorable Field Trip Ideas

We all know that field trips are fun- we have all been there. But when you are on the side that you have to plan them, it becomes a bit less fun, and a lot more stressful. It does not really need to be, though, because there are so many fun things out there that your middle schoolers will love to do.

In this article, we will give you 29 excellent field trip ideas. And remember, these are just ideas- there are tons more out there! Get creative!

I don’t know what it is about the zoo, but there is just something about the zoo that makes it one of the best places on earth. And this is true for most ages, not just preschoolers. Running around, finding favorite animals, discovering new ones, and learning more about animals that may be endangered is so fun.

Your middle schoolers will think so, too. Many zoos offer free (or at least discounted) admission for field trips, as long as they’re booked in advance. ( Source )

2. Water Park

Visiting a water park is a great way to either say goodbye to warmer weather or to celebrate the return of it. The best thing about many water parks is that they have arcades too, so those who do not like swimming can just try to win the giant plushies and lava lamps that we all envied as children.

3. Art Museum

An art museum is a great way to infuse culture into middle schoolers. Most are old enough to know museum etiquette, and the museum can introduce them to so many different art styles, types of people, and countries. They may come out thinking about art in a completely different way.

4. State and National Parks

If you live by a state or national park, consider yourself incredibly lucky, and then go get in there! This is a great way to expose middle schoolers to nature, and it helps them to love the outdoors if they do not already. State and national parks are beautiful, and they give the perfect opportunity to teach about the importance of taking care of the environment!

5. Movie Theater

You can never go wrong with a movie. All kids like movies. As long as it’s rated G or PG, and you have parental approval, the employees will be ready with popcorn and drinks in excess for your middle schoolers to enjoy.

photography field trips

6. Aquarium

Like the zoo, it is impossible to go wrong with a trip to the aquarium. Many aquariums have rehabilitated animals, which presents a great opportunity to teach about the importance of picking up after ourselves, and not throwing trash in the ocean. It is never too early to help kids become environmentally conscious.

7. Botanical Gardens

Botanical gardens give the wonderful chance to be outside, and it provides a controlled environment to do so. They are beautifully landscaped, and they usually have pretty fountains and waterfalls that provide a really calming atmosphere.

An added bonus: it is easy to reinforce what your middle schoolers have been learning about plants in science classes with what you see!

8. An Actual Theatre

Exposing middle schoolers to the arts should be considered an essential part of their education. And, what’s more, going to plays just makes kids feel mature and important. Maybe it is just because of the way the phrase “going to the theatre” sounds when someone says it with a British accent. If that wasn’t enough, then the fact that education in fine arts is proven to increase students’ self-confidence, self-understanding, communication skills, and cognitive abilities. ( Source )

9. Go on a Hike

This is a good field trip for many reasons. Exercising is an important thing to get in the habit of at a young age, and nature is something that everyone should appreciate. And, as if that was not enough, learning about rocks and rock formations is fascinating, too. This is a great way to combine what you’re teaching in class with what the kids are experiencing in real life.

10. Planetarium

The planetarium is another one of those places that are impossible for someone to not enjoy, even if they are starting to act more and more like a teenager. Besides, middle schoolers will understand the concepts and words used at the planetarium a lot better than elementary schoolers would.

photography field trips

11. Local High School

If there is one thing middle schoolers love, it is that they are going to be in high school soon. Take advantage of that! Take them to high school productions of plays, on tours of the high school they will be going to, and to other high school concerts and athletic events.

12. Local Colleges

While college is still far off for middle schoolers, it’s never too early to give them a good impression of college. Communicate how important a college education can be, and do not forget to mention how fun college life is, either. Get them excited about college before the application process rolls around. The best part about this trip: it’s free!

13. Library

Going to the local library is always a good idea. There is so much to learn (Dewey Decimal System, anybody?), and it is a great way to encourage kids to read. Making this trip coincide with a book report project or readathon might help them to check out books, too!

14. Government Buildings

A government building may be fun to tour. This includes things like the state Capitol building, or maybe even a local government office. There are often tours of the bigger buildings, and these are great opportunities to help students learn more about the government system in our country.

15. Local Festivals

Taking your middle schoolers to local festivals is another great field trip idea. Every town has some sort of interesting festival that they are known for. Take advantage of teaching the kids about the history of their town! Some examples are music festivals, farmers’ markets, local races, and holiday events.

photography field trips

16. Railroad

Local railroads may be hard to come by, but if you are lucky enough to have one in your area, they have tons of history. In addition to this, taking train rides is so much fun. Middle schoolers will love learning about the history of the railroad, taking a ride, and let’s be honest- the concessions on the train will help, too.

17. Local Factories

Going to local factories or businesses is another really great opportunity for middle schoolers. Exposing them to how things work is a great way to help them on the path toward finding out what they want to do in their life. When they see how many types of businesses work, they can better figure out what they like and what they don’t.

18. Amusement Park

Amusement parks are tons of fun. That said, they do require a bit more effort as a field trip. Especially if you are a public school teacher taking 20-30 kids with you, you will need chaperones, permission slips, and plenty of focus, because middle schoolers can wander off.

19. Just a Regular Park

This one is almost effortless, and it is still so much fun. Going to a park, sitting in nature, having a picnic, and then just playing exploring is so good for kids. Getting that time to just relieve stress is key to creating a balanced lifestyle for middle schoolers.

20. Historical Monuments

Historical monuments are there for a reason. They exist to teach us about the people and events that came before us. So why not introduce your middle schoolers to these amazing monuments? They are beautifully built, and being in a historical spot to learn about something that happened before is such a cool experience. What if there is not a monument in your town? There probably is, but if not, a neighboring town will definitely have one.

photography field trips

Caving is such a blast. If you live near a cave, taking middle school students caving would be a fantastic field trip. Before you go, make sure you check the difficulty level of the cave, so that everybody can participate. This is a great way to either introduce or just reinforce what students are learning about rocks, erosion, weathering, and more.

22. Historical Buildings, Homes, or other Sites

This is a great way to learn about specific people that may have had a huge influence on your town, organizations that shaped how your town functioned, or just other historical events that may have caused your town to be built in the first place.

Middle schoolers will love seeing places that appear in books they have read or movies they have seen, and if they are not familiar, they will just enjoy seeing the collection of old things.

23. Local Fire Station

Visiting the local fire station would be a very fun field trip for those who have dreams of being a fireman, but it will also be fun for those who don’t. Kids find it fascinating to learn about the process of it all: seeing the fire station, the fire trucks, and asking the firemen what their typical day looks like is a great way to get them engaged.

24. Local Police Station

It’s the same for the local police station. Not only will kids learn a lot about the government and what police do, but they’ll also learn that they don’t have to be afraid of all police officers. This is a great way to help middle schoolers become more comfortable around police and other emergency personnel. In addition to this, seeing the inside of a police officer’s car is sure to keep middle schoolers occupied: there’s a lot there!

25. Pottery Studio

There are several commercial pottery studios sprinkled around the country that anybody can use. So why not make a field trip out of it? Middle schoolers love working with their hands, and one thing that always makes field trips extra special is a souvenir that they can take home at the end of the day.

photography field trips

26. Fish Hatchery

If you live near a fish hatchery, this would be a really interesting field trip for middle schoolers. It does smell weird, but kids will love seeing the process that they go through in the hatchery. They will get to see a couple of different kinds of fish, and this field trip also gives the added benefit of some outdoor time.

27. Aviation Museum

An aviation museum is another excellent idea for a field trip for middle schoolers. Even if some students are not obsessed with planes and vehicles, the things that one can see at an aviation museum are undeniably fascinating.

Students will get to see several different types of planes, learn about famous pilots and wars, maybe see a rocket, and learn how aviation has changed since it first came into practice.

28. Local Power Plant, Dam, or Locks

This is another information-filled field trip. Though many dams and locks may not have tours, they usually have plenty of signs with blurbs to read that will provide for a lovely, self-guided tour. A lot of power plants will offer tours, though. In these places, middle schoolers will learn so much about modern technology, how things are powered, and more.

29. A Walking Tour of Your Town or City

Obviously, if you live in a big city, this may not be the safest idea, but if you feel you can conduct a safe walking tour of your town or city, do it! Even if they have lived in the town or city for a long time, many middle schoolers may still learn something about the town, and they may find something new to do. Pick a few destinations beforehand so that you can show your students the best-kept secrets of your city.

Remember that these ideas only scratch the surface of possibilities for fun field trips for middle schoolers. Students will appreciate any effort to add variety to their learning, so get creative!

30. Farmers Market

The Farmer’s Market is a great way for students to become involved in the community. Beforehand you can teach them about farming and how important it is to support your local farmers. Then you can take them to the market and let them pick something out or learn about all of the different produce. There are also sometimes animals there that they can pet.

Many communities host Farmer’s markets on Saturdays, so you might need to find out if your local farmer’s market takes place during the week!

31. Animal Shelter

The Animal Shelter is an awesome field trip not only for the kids but for the dogs and cats as well. The animals in animal shelters have often been neglected and abused. All they want is some love, which the kids will gladly give. It may inspire some families to adopt and give the animals a loving home.

32. Recycling Center

Learning about recycling is important. Visiting a Recycling Center might not be the most entertaining for the kids, but they will learn a valuable lesson about the importance of recycling and why we do it. They will also learn how to recycle and what can be reused, from plastic to paper to clothes.

33. A Hospital, Clinic, Dentist’s Office, etc

It is always a great idea to take the children to certain places where they can learn about different professions and what they could be when they grow up. Some kids may be scared of the hospital or doctor, but this way they can learn that doctors and nurses are here to help them.

If you can’t get the hospital to offer a tour, consider a tour of just any local clinic of a medical professional. Perhaps even a parent of a student in the class could offer a tour so that kids can learn about different professions.

Going to the bank may not sound the most fun to elementary school students, but they can learn important information that isn’t being fully taught in schools. Kids can go behind the scenes and possibly get a tour of the vault as well as learn how to write a check and what the purpose of a credit card is.

35. News, TV, or Radio Station

These field trips are fascinating because you can see the behind-the-scenes of the studio that the online viewers or listeners don’t get to see. The children will love to see the cameras and recording equipment, maybe even meet the people that their parents watch on TV every morning. Some kids could decide that this is the career path they want to move towards. The world always needs people to tell stories and report on what’s happening.

36. Local Business

It’s always important to highlight and remember local businesses. Local business owners would love to give back to the community by giving a tour to the students, inspiring them to chase their dreams. You never know which field trip is going to spark interest and help a kid decide what they want to be someday.

37. Restaurant or Bakery

Going to a restaurant or local bakery is something that children will love because they can get a behind-the-scenes tour, as well as some sampling of the food or treats. It will probably end up being one of their favorites since food is involved. Many local businesses will offer tours free of charge. ( Source )

38. Senior Care Facility

Taking the elementary school students to a retirement home is a great opportunity to teach them about the importance of service and learning from their elders. Children can oftentimes be egotistic because their brains aren’t fully developed. Volunteering is a great way to teach them compassion and kindness, and it will make the residents’ day as well.

39. Sporting Game

Sporting games are purely an entertaining field trip, and the students will be very excited. Most areas in the United States have a sports team, but even if you don’t live near a major city, you can find some minor league teams as well. Taking the students to a baseball or soccer game is probably the most common sport for a field trip. ( Source )

40. Theatre

Going to a theatre to see a play is also very exciting and entertaining. Communities almost always have a local theatre putting on a play for all ages to enjoy. You could even take the students to a play at the middle school or high school in the area. Make sure to pick an age-friendly play that they are willing to sit through for a few hours since young kids have a hard time sitting for long periods of time.

Going to the movies is a great indoor winter activity and very exciting for the children. It can get expensive, but there are also oftentimes group rate discounts, especially for schools. Maybe the movie field trip can be at the end of a big test as a reward. Don’t forget to get popcorn!

42. Orchestra

Going to the symphony or orchestra is a very special experience that not every child would normally experience. Classical music is very healthy for the brain. These days, everybody wants to listen to recorded music, but it’s important to instill a love of live music in the newer generations as well.

43. Pumpkin Patch

Fall is always a fun time of the year, and there are so many activities to do! This includes going to the pumpkin patch. Oftentimes, pumpkin patches not only have pumpkins to pick out and carve, but hayrides, mazes, and fun foods to try. My favorite pumpkin patch treats as a kid were apple cider donuts.

Picnics are easy and simple, probably costing zero dollars to the budget. All you have to do is make sure that every student brings a lunch from home and a blanket to sit on. Then all you have to do is take the class outside, set up the blankets, and they can sit with their friends and eat their lunch. Field Trips don’t always have to be big and extravagant.

45. Waterpark

The waterpark could be a great end-of-the-year activity since it needs to be warmer weather to go swimming. This field trip idea would probably need the most organizing, but it will be much worth it when it all comes together and you can celebrate the year together with students, parents, and teachers. This activity is recommended for older elementary school students that know how to swim.

There are endless opportunities for elementary school field trips! These young students are excited and curious about everything. Many of these places are free of charge and are happy to give a tour or experience to the students. Just make sure to plan everything out in advance and find enough chaperones to supervise the kids alongside the teachers. Good Luck! ( Source )

46. Explore a Local Recreation Center

Another great local resource that students can explore is a local recreation center. Finding and understanding available resources in the community is an important skill for kids as they transition to adulthood. A field trip to a recreation center can also emphasize the importance of health and lifelong physical activity to students as they begin to have more control over their lives.

47. Volunteer at a Food Pantry

Field trip education can be about more than just the sciences; giving high school students opportunities to serve in the community can be an important way for young adults to build character.

Many local food pantries would welcome the assistance of a large group of high school students. Taking a field trip day to volunteer at a local food pantry can help students understand more about supply chain management, while simultaneously helping them to build empathy.

48. Visit a Technology Company/Area

Technology is another area experiencing lots of growth. Helping to expose more students to areas like this can help give them direction when they may have none, and can also help fill a societal need.

If possible, arrange for students to take a field trip to a local software company where they can have opportunities to see the background processes of coding, system networks, and other tech phenomena. Showing students something like a server room, or cable management practices could be beneficial as well!

49. Visit the Capitol or Other Government Building

Whether it’s for History class, Political Science, or just to increase students’ social understanding, taking students to visit a capitol building or other government building can be both interesting and thought-provoking. This can be beneficial for all students as citizens, whether they are interested in pursuing education or careers in government or not.

50. Plan a College Visit

With students looking to the future, being able to get them on a university campus can be extremely helpful in guiding them in their decisions. Planning to visit a campus—or multiple campuses—could be a beneficial experience, especially for those on the fence about going.

Many colleges love to welcome high school students for campus visits and tours. Additionally, students may feel more comfortable being able to do a visit with friends and other peers with similar interests. Since Juniors will be thinking about which colleges to apply to, plan these trips preferably during students’ Junior year!

51. Plan a Photography Trip

With the invention of smartphones, and the popularity of Instagram, all students like to be both the photographer and the model. You can provide a field trip for them by taking them somewhere unique to take pictures and teaching them about principles of good photography, like lighting, balance, and the rule of thirds!

Alternatively, you could take them to a studio and allow them to take portraits or shoot other professional pieces, such as jewelry.

52. Plan a Painting Trip

For your more artsy individuals, you could consider planning a day trip to somewhere scenic where they could practice their painting skills. They could practice landscapes, nature scenes, or even portraits in nature.

53. Plan a Geological Trip

Another trip that could be fun is a trip to a location of geological significance. This could be something visual, such as being able to identify different strata on the side of a mountain, or something more tactile, like digging in an area for pieces of archeological or historical significance. It could even be something as simple as comparing rocks and their features depending on the area in which they’re found.

54. Do a Service Project Using Just Serve

We mentioned service in some of the above ideas (food pantry or homeless shelter), but you could also consider planning your own service project! Whether that’s planting trees locally, visiting an old folks’ home to visit with the residents there, or picking up trash.

There’s actually a great free website called Just Serve that allows you to quickly find service project needs for local non-profits. You could probably find something easy.

Allowing students to plan and prepare their own service activity can get them more engaged and help them feel like they can make a difference themselves.

55. Visit an Escape Room — or Any Activity Just for Fun!

Finally, we’d encourage you to be okay with some field trips being just for fun. Let your students go to an escape room, an amusement park, or a pool just for fun. Students need a break sometimes too!

7 First Impressions of Moscow, Russia (From a Street Photography Perspective)

moscow-impressions-cover

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the second largest city in Europe by population. It’s an urban, cosmopolitan city of the highest level, with more than enough glitz to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of European and Russian that makes it stand out on its own. And the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen.

moscow-sf-19

So here are my first impressions of Moscow, from my personal Street Photographer perspective…

7 First Impressions of Moscow  (From a Street Photography Perspective)

1. big city with so much to discover.

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

moscow-sf-15

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

moscow-sf-12

2. Museum Metro

photography field trips

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

moscow-sf-18

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

moscow-sf-35

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to definitely check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

3. Not as walkable as Saint-Petersburg

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have a lot of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

moscow-sf-45

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

moscow-sf-52

4.  Gorky Park is like a Russian Central Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

moscow-sf-30

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Half the city under construction

European cities in general seem to be filled with more construction than usual lately. But while this won’t be true forever, Moscow was filled with the most I’ve ever seen. Moscow already has the most skyscrapers in Europe, with many being less than a decade old. In only the last few years, the three tallest skyscrapers in Europe have opened here, giving it five of Europe’s ten tallest. The 2018 FIFA Word Cup is bringing much of this on, but the city is pushing to complete a skyline here than will rival any in the world.

moscow-sf-51

The recession has slowed down the construction some, but the government is pushing it on. So all over the city, there were sidewalks covered with wood boards and lined with striped construction walls. At first, it was a little disappointing from a street photography perspective to see so much blocked by construction. After a while, though, it became something to capture. The striped construction materials and signs are colorful and all the workers created some interesting activity. It will be interesting to see what the city looks like when everything is complete, but for now, the construction provides interest itself.

moscow-sf-42

6. Learn the Russian Alphabet

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, it can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

moscow-sf-17

7. Where East Meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with a museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more European package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline and modernities with soviet emblems and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

moscow-sf-26

It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet nostalgia, and a whole lot more.

Russia’s Metropolis

Moscow is famous around the world, but it might not be completely what you expect from Russia’s capital. The city’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it brings something changed over time since its Soviet days. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. Most might say it feels more like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

moscow-sf-48

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

If any of you have been to Moscow before, tell me about your experience and impressions of the city and country in the comments below! And stay tuned for more on Moscow, including some of the best Street Photography shots I captured while there.

Politics latest: Sunak faces 'realistic prospect' of being ousted after local elections

A former Number 10 director of communications thinks Tory MPs could move against the prime minister if the local elections go particularly badly. Jeremy Hunt has admitted the Conservatives are expecting "significant losses".

  • Local elections:  All you need to know about this week's votes
  • Live reporting by Faith Ridler and (earlier)  Charlotte Chelsom-Pill

Guto Harri, the former Number 10 director of communications under Boris Johnson, has said it is a "realistic prospect" the Conservatives could move against Rishi Sunak if the results of the local elections are bad.

"I think that would be made and unfair, but I think it's a realistic prospect now," he tells Sophy Ridge .

"It's clear that one or two mayoral contests could be read as the trigger. It could be that the overall number is so bad that that is the trigger."

'It can be very brutal'

Mr Harri says that, by Sunday, there could be conversations across Westminster on whether Tory MPs could move against Mr Sunak.

"It can happen very, very quickly, and it can be very brutal," noting the speed at which his old boss Mr Johnson was toppled.

Andrew Fisher, former head of policy for Jeremy Corbyn, says that, in contrast, Thursday could be a good night for Labour.

"It's clearly going to be a bad night for Rishi Sunak," he says.

By Tomos Evans , Wales reporter

Calls for an investigation into a £200,000 donation to Welsh First Minister Vaughan Gething have intensified in recent weeks.

A motion calling for an independent probe into the money was debated in the Senedd on Wednesday and defeated by 27 votes to 25.

But former deputy climate change minister Lee Waters said Mr Gething should do "the right thing" and return the donation.

Mr Gething was elected leader of Welsh Labour in March and succeeded Mark Drakeford as Wales's first minister.

Opposition parties launched a bid to appoint an independent advisor to check whether there was any conflict of interest over the donation during the leadership campaign.

That's it for tonight's Politics Hub programme - we'll end with an exclusive report from our political correspondent Serena Barker-Singh .

Tory MPs are threatening to rebel over the government's new housing proposals.

In a letter to Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, more than 30 Tory MPs have stated their dissatisfaction with the current leasehold system and implored the government to scrap ground rent on leasehold properties.

Housing Secretary Michael Gove previously called that "a charge for nothing" and has stated a personal preference to move towards a "peppercorn" system, where ground rent is as close to zero as possible.

Multiple Tory MPs who have signed the letter are also in favour of this proposal - citing that promise made in the Tory 2019 manifesto.

Former England cricket star Monty Panesar, who's standing at the next election for George Galloway's Worker's Party, is now joining Sophy Ridge .

He is asked about his change in career.

"When I played cricket for England I had fans up and down the country, I had Monty Mania happening, everyone knew who I was.

"Obviously I am a very popular figure in this country so hopefully by me getting involved in politics, I can maybe make a difference to ordinary people."

He adds: "I believe there is a huge divide between the rich and the poor at the moment, and hopefully me being involved with the Worker's Party of Britain I can come together and be that voice for the ordinary person who is walking down the street."

'Hear the voices of working people'

So why the Worker's Party?

Mr Panesar says he was introduced to the party by a friend, and asked if he wanted to run as an MP in the Ealing Southall constituency at the next general election.

Pressed, the former cricketer says he doesn't believe Labour and the Tories are here to "hear the voices of the working people".

He says the party wants to "redistribute the power between the rich and the poor", by introducing wealth tax on large estates.

The would-be MP wants to extend free public transport for children across the UK.

Sophy is now joined by Labour frontbencher Nick Thomas-Symonds, and they begin their conversation on the government's Rwanda scheme.

So will Labour scrap the policy?

"We will replace the Rwanda policy," he says. "And we've seen previously the work of similar schemes.

"Israel, for example, had an agreement with Rwanda that had to be abandoned in 2018 because it wasn't working.

"We can see from past experience, what the situation is with a scheme like this.

"We believe that the money that's been allocated to the Rwanda scheme would be better spent on a new unit in the National Crime Agency that would be able to work internationally to bust the model of the people smuggler gangs.

"Secondly, we need to really get a grip of the asylum system, the enormous backlog that we have.

"The amount of money that's being spent on people in hotels, a miserable existence for them, really is not value for money for the taxpayer."

Ahead of the confidence vote in the Scottish government, outgoing first minister Humza Yousaf spoke to our Scotland correspondent Connor Gillies about the SNP leadership contest.

He called on colleagues to ensure the race was "civil", having come through a bruising battle with party rivals just over a year ago.

Watch the full interview below:

Next up on tonight's show is some relief for Scotland's outgoing first minister after his government survived a no confidence vote.

Humza Yousaf announced his resignation earlier this week, but it could have been worse for the SNP after Scottish Labour forced a vote at Holyrood this afternoon.

Despite Labour and the Tories uniting to try to bring down the government, it wasn't enough to force the nationalist party out of office.

Read more from our Scotland reporter Jenness Mitchell below:

Sir Keir Starmer also told Sky News today he doesn't "believe" in the government's Rwanda scheme.

He said Labour would ditch it, vowing not to "flog a dead horse".

His plan would be to "stop the gangs that are running this vile trade" of smuggling people across the Channel, working with law enforcement in Europe.

"And that's why I've already had discussions in The Hague (including with EU law enforcement agency Europol) about how quickly we can share data intelligence to do that," he said.

"I'm absolutely determined to tackle this problem because the government has lost control of the borders."

Watch more below:

On the eve of the local elections, Sir Keir Starmer has told Sky News he considered quitting after disappointing results for Labour in 2021.

His party lost council seats and the Hartlepool by-election.

"I did [consider quitting] because I didn't feel that I should be bigger than the party and that if I couldn't bring about the change, perhaps there should be a change," he said.

"But actually, in the end, I reflected on it, talked to very many people and doubled down and determined, no, it is the change in the Labour Party we need."

Read more from our political reporter Jennifer Scott :

The conversation with Chancellor Jeremy Hunt now turns to Rwanda, after it was confirmed police have raided the homes of the first people to be deported there.

It comes following the recent passing of the Safety of Rwanda Act, which declared the central African nation safe following concerns raised by the Supreme Court last year.

Additionally, a failed asylum seeker voluntarily chose to go to Kigali once their application to stay in the UK failed.

Asked if it is all over for Rishi Sunak if the policy fails, Mr Hunt says: "I think the evidence, the stories we're hearing from Ireland, are that actually this policy is beginning to work because people themselves are saying they're being deterred from coming to the UK because of the possibility of being sent to Rwanda."

Ireland's deputy prime minister has said the threat of deportation to Rwanda is causing migrants to head for Ireland instead of the UK.

Sophy pushes back that the policy is to deter people who aren't already in the UK.

"This is people who are who want to claim asylum in the UK, and they're saying actually they are worried they won't be able to do so because of the possibility of being flown to Rwanda," Mr Hunt says.

"I think that we are seeing the possibility of these flights happening even before any of the flights have actually happened is having an impact.

"I think this policy is beginning to work."

Valerie Bertinelli Giggles in Her Boyfriend’s Arms as He Shares Insights into Their Long-Distance Relationship

"Wish it hadn’t gone so damn fast," Bertinelli's boyfriend Mike Goodnough said of their most recent trip together

photography field trips

Instagram/therealhoarse

Valerie Bertinelli is smitten.

On April 29, the cookbook author shared an Instagram video of herself and her new boyfriend, Mike Goodnough . In the black-and-white clip, Bertinelli is in her new beau’s arms as she giggles and gives herself a giddy face palm. Taylor Swift ’s new song “Alchemy” plays in the background.

Several of the Hot in Cleveland star’s fans shared their well wishes in the comments section, including one fan, who wrote, “You look like a 16 year old crushing for the first time!!!! 😍” Another said, “You two are so adorable!🥰.”

Bertinelli is doing long distance with Goodnough, who visited for the Food Network star’s 64th birthday. Goodnough lives on the East Coast and works as a writer, while Bertinelli calls California home.

In an Instagram post, Goodnough — who goes by Hoarse Whisperer online — said the close of their celebratory trip was tough.

“Some days seem to last forever. Others seem to go so quick,” he wrote on Instagram. “So long, SoCal. Under a week was too little. Thanks for the parting sunset. Wish it hadn’t gone so damn fast.”

In his post, Bertinelli could be seen looking out at the beautiful sunset.

Their last trip together was in New York for the launch of Bertinelli's new cookbook, Indulge .

On April 20, the pair went Instagram official. In a photo Bertinelli shared, they posed closely together while wearing glasses and smiling at the camera before them.

"🎶 I’ll drink what you think and I’m high from smokin’ your jokes all damn night 🎶," Bertinelli wrote in her caption, using lyrics from another one of Swift 's new songs "So High School" off of her recently released album, The Tortured Poets Department .

Though Bertinelli announced her relationship in March, she kept Goodnough's identity private.

“ I’m in love ,” she told PEOPLE in a recent cover story. “It’s a seesaw of emotions because I was adamant I was never falling in love again."

She didn’t see the new relationship coming at all. “My belly is flip-flopping. This was not supposed to happen,” she added.

Not long after, Goodnough posted online that he was the cookbook author's new man.

Instagram/wolfiesmom

“I am Valerie Bertinelli’s boyfriend … and that may well be among the most surreal sentences I’ve ever pecked out. But it’s true … and nothing about our actual relationship seems surreal. It just seems … good … lucky … a gift,” he wrote on his Substack called Hoarse Whisperings .

“I just adore her. I’m so glad we’re together,” Goodnough added.
