When examining the city’s architecture and street culture, there is no denying that this is the most diverse city on the island of Hispaniola.

Many people eliminate Santiago de los Caballeros from their itineraries as a result, since they believe it to be nothing more than a modern, industrial center with little to offer visitors.

However, what they don’t know is that the town has several hidden treasures that make it worth visiting.

In fact, Santiago de los Caballeros is the place to go if you want a more urban holiday experience without the regular tourist crowds.

Its main attraction is the Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración, or Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration, which also happens to be the tallest building in Santiago.

Santiago de los Caballeros–named after the 30 Spanish aristocrats who followed Columbus and settled here in 1495–was the country’s first capital before it suffered an earthquake in 1562. Today, the Dominican Republic’s second largest city–affectionately dubbed “Ciudad Corazón” or the city in the heart of the Cibao Valley–is a modern and cosmopolitan center thriving in commerce, finance, education, and services, and pulsating with culture.

Towering over its sprawling urban streets, the  Monumento a Los Héroes de la Restauración –affectionately called  El Monumento –is the city’s chief landmark and social hub, where residents and visitors gather on its lawns, but also serves as a constant reminder of the men who regained the DR’s independence from Spain in 1865. Looming in the distance is the Cordillera Central mountain range, replete with hiking adventures. History, arts, and culture are never far in Santiago–Centro Cultural León offers a comprehensive display of the country’s rich heritage–and are part and parcel of this significant region as birthplace of the Mirabal Sisters, as well as several Dominican presidents. Home to universities, the area also brims with a dynamic population of millenials, amid professionals, all of whom enjoy the city’s vibrant entertainment and nightlife, boasting over 100 discos, bars, and lounges within the downtown area.

Despite the big city life, traditions run deep. Baseball passion thrives, as Santiago is home to the popular Aguilas Cibaeñas team, winners of three Caribbean Series and 22 national titles since 1952. In the city’s surrounding areas are some of the most talented artisans and painters in the DR, while Santiago Carnival ranks among the most revered in the country, with the most bejeweled handmade devil costumes after La Vega’s. To boot, nature has blessed the province with fertile soils that grow the world’s finest tobacco, home to 90 percent of the largest cigar plantations and factories and earning Santiago the nickname “Cigar Country.” Puro aficionados will also find all the premium brand factories near the city center at Tamboril, offering free daily tours and exclusive shopping opportunities.

Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic – City Guide

While I spent a majority of my time in the Dominican Republic in my beloved Santo Domingo, I did check out Santiago de los Caballeros for a few weeks, too.

The second largest city in the country felt a bit like a “campo” to me, but I definitely enjoyed my time there. The people were incredibly and amazingly friendly. Plus, the pace of life was like taking a refreshing step back compared to the capital.

Brief Overview

• Population: Slightly under 1 million (metro)
• Weather: Warm & tropical, but quite pleasant (aka not too hot)
• Safety: Safer than the capital. I never felt unsafe in Santiago de los Cabelleros. Some claim the city is dangerous, but I didn’t see it. Statistics state otherwise.
• Language: Spanish is needed. But I did meet more people with a solid grasp of English here (on average) than in the capital.

Average Costs

Santiago, Dominican Republic is way, way cheaper than the capital. If you’re on a budget and looking to visit the country, this city may be your best option. I’d even venture to say Santiago de los Caballeros is similarly priced to Colombian cities. Everyday living is dirt cheaper here. The only issue is finding decent accommodation.

• Average Apartment Rental: $350-750 per month
• Gym Membership: $20-40 per month
• Average Meal: $3-8
• Beer in Club: $2-4
• Bottle (rum) in Club: $12-70

Where to Stay

This is where it gets tricky. Santiago de los Caballeros is not a touristy city. At all. Whatsoever. In fact, there’s maybe 15-20 hotels in the whole city. There just aren’t many travelers here. So you may have to dig a little to find solid accommodation. My last trip there I struggled to do just that. And it blew.

For starters, there are two areas you’ll want to stay in Santiago. I highly recommend finding an apartment or hotel near El Monumento or in the Los Jardines neighborhood. Both locations are ideal and will give you a number of bars, clubs, and restaurants to choose from.

I stayed in Los Jardines and loved the location. I could walk everywhere I wanted – from the gym to the bar or club. Supermarkets were easily accessed, too. The neighborhood is definitely my first choice when in Santiago de los Caballeros.

Options are limited on Airbnb, so you’ll want to lock something down in advance. If you’re new to the service, get $40 off your first rental here.

How to Get Around

Santiago is a small city. Transportation won’t cost much here. I’d recommend using Uber the vast majority of the time. However, after passing some time in the city, you can save some change by taking the collective taxis. Generally, I despise public transportation, but these shared taxis run on routes and are exceptionally consistent. You just have to learn the routes that take you where you need to go.

Taking taxis on the street isn’t a bad idea in Santiago. The city isn’t touristy – so you don’t have to deal with the “Gringo Rip Off” culture that plagues taxis in other cities. Still, I prefer Uber and would recommend sticking with the app in this town.

Language Barrier

There are a surprisingly large amount of people in Santiago de los Caballeros that speak English. However, you’d be a fool to come here without a little knowledge of Spanish. The people in Santiago are some of the friendliest I’ve encountered and a little effort in Spanish will go a long way. Even terrible Spanish will open doors for you in this city and allow you to make friends.

Things to Do in Santiago de los Caballeros

• Cigar Factory Tour: I freaking hate tours. Honestly, they blow 95% of the time. The La Aurora Cigar Factory Tour was in the 5% of tours I enjoy. This was the best tourism experience I’ve ever had in my life. The tour guide’s name is Eugenio, and he’s quite the character. Dude speaks like six languages fluently and makes you feel like a long-time friend during the tour. Plus, La Aurora makes some of the finest cigars in the world. • El Monumento: If you’re in Santiago, then you must check out El Monumento for an afternoon. The massive monument in the center of the city is quite the site to see. It’s fun to walk around at the top and check out the inside, too.
• Bus to the Beach: There’s not a lot of touristic things to do in Santiago, Dominican Republic. So hop in a Caribe Tours bus and head to Sosua for an afternoon. The ride is one hour and costs about $4-5 USD each way.
• 27 Waterfalls: Another bus trip, but so worth it. 27 Charcos de Damajagua (27 waterfalls) is an absolute must while in the region. This unique experience will have you swimming through crystal blue waters in canyons and sliding down rocks. It’s hard to describe, but it’s a ton of fun. If you do the tour without a company, it’s dirt cheap, too. Just remember to tip your guide well.  Click here to learn more.

Nightlife in Santiago, Dominican Republic

• Levels: This club is located in a small mall called Bella Terra near Los Jardines, but it stays popping. The best night is Wednesday, as it’s ladies’ night and the place gets packed. However, Friday and Saturday can be good, too. This is my favorite disco in Santiago.
• Dubai Club: Arguably the most popular disco in all of Santiago de los Caballeros, Dubai Club stays packed with the upper-class of the city. I dug the vibe of this place, but it can be hit or miss. Your best bet if buying a bottle and posting up here, especially on the weekends.
• 75 Grados: A tiny club, but always a good time – 75 Grados in Santiago can get wild. Plus, the blender drinks and chill bartenders ensure the vibe is always perfect. Coming here until 12:30 or so is a great idea (then head off to a club). The music is strictly reggaeton and dembow, which definitely encourages grinding.

Santiago de los Caballeros does have an international airport. If traveling within the country, I’d recommend taking Caribe Tours wherever you want to go. I’ve had great success with the company and never had an issue. The bus to Santo Domingo only takes three hours, and you can be at the beach in around an hour from the city.

Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic – Overall

Santiago, Dominican Republic isn’t for everyone. The city is much quieter than Santo Domingo, and the pace of life is slower. But the nightlife here is good, and there’s just enough tourism to get by. If you want to base up in a quiet city that has just enough going for it, then Santiago may be for you. I enjoyed my time there and plan to come back sometime.

2. Santo Domingo is best for culture buffs

The gritty hustle and bustle of city life collide with vibrant Dominican culture in the island’s capital (“El Capital”), Santo Domingo . It’s one of the Caribbean’s oldest cities, making it ideal for history aficionados looking to explore colonial-era architecture and take a deep dive into the country’s past. 

You'll find the Zona Colonial in the city's center, which the island's oldest church, European fortress, monastery, university and hospital all call home. But step outside the cobblestone streets of the Zona, and a metropolitan joyride awaits, with elegant restaurants, raucous nightclubs and plenty of cultural institutions to add to your itinerary.

3. Samaná is best for whale watching

The Samaná Peninsula is where the unspoiled natural beauty of the Dominican Republic mingles with friendly small-town sensibilities – a stark contrast to the glitzy resorts of Punta Cana and the bustling grind of Santo Domingo. 

The capital of this peninsular province is the eponymous Samaná, located in northern Samaná Bay. Eco-tourism is popular here, with one major star attraction: whales. The best time to go is between January and March, when thousands of humpback whales descend upon the bay to give birth to their calves. 

El Museo de las Ballenas (Whale Museum) in the neighboring town of Salinas is an attraction in its own right, with guided tours of marine mammal exhibits, handcrafted souvenirs and a full 12m (40-ft) skeleton of a humpback whale found along the rocky coastline between Las Galeras and Santa Bárbara de Samaná in 1993.

4. Sosúa is best for late-night partying

By day, Sosúa is your typical sleepy beach town – large swaths of sandy shores gently lapped by the Atlantic’s cerulean waves. It’s also the island’s dairy and cheese capital, courtesy of a 1938 presidential decree that allowed 100,000 Jewish refugees to settle in the area.

Some 800 people took the offer and launched a dairy and cheese factory, many of whose products you can purchase today. 

While this all seems quite bucolic and mellow, Sosúa by night is an entirely different beast. After dark, the main strip (Calle Pedro Clisante) closes off to traffic, and revelers spill out onto the streets from the resident bars, lounges and nightclubs,  many of which feature local live music, including the Blue Ice Piano Bar and the popular Jolly Roger . 

But a word of caution: the area is also known for sex tourism. Dominican and Haitian sex workers are known to approach and proposition tourists in the area, so practice a fair amount of caution.

5. Cabarete is best for thrill seekers

Sure, sipping cocktails by the beach is nice. But there’s only so much relaxing you can do, right? When you’re ready to shift your vacation into high gear , set your coordinates for Cabarete , a beach town located on the Caribbean coast of the Dominican Republic. 

Founded in 1835 by a British merchant and former enslaver, Cabarete is now an adrenaline junkie’s dream, a haven for kayakers, snorkelers and wind and kite surfers (several international competitions are hosted here). It’s also a popular spot for avid surfers, thanks to some of the best winds and tides in the Caribbean.

6. El Limón waterfall is the perfect adventurous hike

Tighten your shoelaces and summon your balance – the 2.4km (1.5-mile) trail to get to  Cascada El Limón  is mostly wet and rocky terrain that visitors traverse on horseback. But it can also be accessed by foot – you’ll cross rivers and hop over muddy rocks to make it to your destination, so be sure to pack some rubber footwear. 

After a 30 to 60-minute walk or horseback ride from the small town of El Limón, you’ll arrive at your destination – a spectacular 46m (150-ft) waterfall that flows into the cool waters of an expansive swimming hole. You can book a tour with one of the companies in Las Terrenas , a 30-minute drive from El Limón; the excursion typically includes a guide, horse and lunch. 

7. Bayahibe is best for scuba diving

Situated on the Caribbean coast of the Dominican Republic, Bayahibe is a former fishing village turned quiet resort town with access to some of the island’s most lively (and spectacular) beaches. 

Just a few miles from town, you’ll find Bayahibe Beach , Dominicus Beach and boat launches that ferry you to Isla Saona , a national park that’s more booze-cruise layover than uninhabited sanctuary. Your best bet: stay in Bayahibe and take advantage of one of some 20 different dive sites in the area – it’s one of the most active areas for scuba divers in the country. If scuba diving isn’t in the cards, try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding or snorkeling the reefs instead. 

8. Jarabacoa offers mountainous hikes and whitewater river rafting

Jarabacoa is the antithesis of the Dominican Republic’s oceanside towns. So when you’ve had your fill of lounging on the beach, head to Jarabacoa’s soaring peaks for verdant hikes, whitewater rafting on a roaring river and warm mugs of irresistible Dominican coffee on cool, misty mountain mornings. 

Known as the City of Everlasting Spring, Jarabacoa has no shortage of activities: waterfall hikes, rope-bridge crossings over the Jimenoa River, plentiful rounds of golf and visits to the Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria del Evangelio. 

The area is also home to the Ebano Verde Scientific Reserve , where more than 600 species of flora and fauna populate one of the most humid areas on the island (you can arrange a tour of the reserve before you visit). Jarabacao is also known for its Carnaval festivities in February – one of the most famous celebrations in the Dominican Republic.

Santiago de los Caballeros is the capital of the province of Santiago and the second most important city in the Dominican Republic , making it worth a visit on your next holiday to the Dominican Republic.

Santiago de los Caballeros is very different from any of the other towns in the country. Its architecture and streets leave no doubt that it’s the most cosmopolitan city on the island of Hispaniola.

As a modern city and an important industrial hub, many visitors rule out the option of visiting it, which is a serious mistake, since it has important museums and attractions that make it a treasure to be discovered in the Dominican Republic .

How to get to Santiago de los Caballeros

Santiago de los Caballeros is located in the northern part of the country, which means it’s farther away from the more frequented and important tourist destinations such as Punta Cana. However, despite the distance, it is definitely worth visiting this city. From Santo Domingo, you can take a bus that will drop you in the centre of Santiago de los Caballeros in about three hours.  

Or from Santo Domingo you could also take a taxi or rent a car to complete the same trip but in just two hours. Once you get to the city centre, you can use public transportation to get to the main attractions.

The most important thing in this city to see during your visit is the monument of Santiago de los Caballeros, located in Duarte Park, the largest in the city. This monument is dedicated to the heroes of the War of Restoration and is 70 metres high. The Centro León

The San Luis Fort
