Whether you’re new to the world of Hallyu or a veteran, it’s difficult to keep your mind from meandering through the streets of Seoul. Such is the beauty of South Korea’s capital city. Some of the most iconic scenes from your favourite K-drama also make for great spots to visit as a first-timer in the city. Here’s a K-drama fan’s handbook for your next vacation in Seoul.

Namsan Tower

Namsan Tower

Namsan Tower

The Namsan Tower, more popularly known as the N Seoul Tower amongst travellers, is Seoul’s best bet for a cracking view of the capital city without any trekking involved, thanks to the outdoor elevator. This iconic landmark is a go-to date night venue in many K-drama shows. From Goo Jyon-Piyo in Boys Over Flowers to Joon Jae in The Legend of the Blue Sea , this place has seen protagonists tirelessly wait for their lady loves, with romantic snowfall and sparkling city lights as the backdrop. The cable car ride to the tower offers panoramic vistas of autumn foliage during the day from September to November, and a gorgeous aerial view of the city at night. Don’t forget to hang your padlock on the railings of the Love Lock Bridge, just like Song-Yi and Min-Jun from My Love from The Star.   Insider tip: Joon-Jae’s (actor Lee Min-Ho from The Legend of the Blue Sea ) wooden gated house is located just behind the Namsan Tower’s cable car station and can be visited en route to this destination. Book tickets here.

The fantastical Lotte World is one of the world’s largest indoor theme park and is a common feature across K-dramas. It is lively, dreamy and beautiful in all seasons, especially during spring, with cherry blossoms all along the pavements. The whimsical Camelot Carousel, with 64 graceful white horses pirouetting up and down at a mellow pace serves the perfect carnival experience. Enjoy corn dogs and bumper cars, like Kang Tae-Mu and Shin Ha-Ri from Business Proposal , or show off your skills on the ice-skating rink like Han Seo-Jun and Im Ju-Kyung from True Beauty . Cross over a bridge to the outdoor Magic Island from the indoor World Adventure area to arrive at the most picturesque spot overlooking the Lotte World Castle for your Instagram photo op. Book tickets here.   Insider tip: Lotte World has a super fun place called the Star Avenue, which features life-size hand impressions of all your fav K-pop and K-drama stars where you can almost “hold” them. Itaewon

While Itaewon has always been one of the most cosmopolitan and lit places in Seoul for decades, this place gained the top spot on bucket lists after it was featured in the Park Seo-Joon series Itaewon Class, which became a global hit on Netflix. Itaewon is a smorgasbord of streets bustling with hip and exciting beer bars, BBQ restaurants, Indie stores, quaint boutiques, clubs, and more. Once shunned by locals as a seedy red-light district, today a trip to Seoul is incomplete without a pub crawl in Itaewon. If you are looking for a place to stay in Itaewon, check out the G Guest House, with its bold and striking yet modest architecture. This is where Cho Yi Seo slaps the District Head’s wife in the K-drama Itaewon Class . Insider tip: While walking along Noksapyeong Bridge, where Park Seo-Joon, the male protagonist of the K-drama Itaewon Class often took a walk, don’t be surprised if you are halted by a large group of punk dancers blocking the road with their quick moves. It’s a common scene here, especially after dark on weekends.

The Han River

Fireworks at the Han River

Fireworks at the Han River

Remember the cute picnic date between Do Bong-Soon and Ahn Min-Hyuk in Strong Women Do Bong Soon ? Or the scene from Lie to Me where Yoon Eun-Hye and Kang Ji-Hwan are seen cruising along the river in adorable duck boats? You can relive these exact experiences and much more at the Han River. This place offers a gamut of activities. Get ready for water sports such as kayaking and flyboarding. Feel free to take a dip or catch largemouth bass fish in the freshwater river. Look out for the Banpo Bridge, where 200 lights illuminate a 570m-long fountain sending out dancing, rainbow-coloured jets of water in the air. Or simply spend a balmy summer night camping under the stars at the Han River. The campsite offers facilities such as tents, 24-hour-shower rooms, BBQ grills and fresh hot ramyeon in disposable foil tins. Fellow campers often serenade each other with in-house live music. Although the Han River physically divides the city, in actuality, it brings the people of Seoul closer. Insider tip: Every October, there is a spectacular firework show hosted on the banks of the Han River during the Seoul International Fireworks Festival, along with music and laser lights.

Yeongjin Beach in Gangneung

Yeongjin Beach

Yeongjin Beach

If you want to follow the footsteps of the Shin-Tak couple from the K-drama Goblin , one of Korea’s most-watched dramas, take notes. The most iconic scene, where Ji Eun-Tak summons Kim Shin for the first time on her birthday, was shot at this beach, at one of the five (now clearly called out using a signboard) rocky piers on a breakwater by the sea. The calm waves and shallow turquoise waters of this pristine white-sand beach make the place worth a day trip from Seoul; the beach is a 2.5-hour drive from the city. Relish the salty air and dip your hands in the crystal clear water to grab a handful of shells to take back home as souvenirs. Insider tip: With an increasingly large flock of people trying to recreate the scene from Goblin that is shot here, many vendors nearby are renting props such as the red scarf and buckwheat flower bouquets seen in the show.

Bukchon Hanok village

Bukchon Hanok village

The easiest and quickest way to travel back to the ostentatious Joseon Dynasty (which ruled Korea from 1392 to 1897) is by visiting the Bukchon Hanok Village. Besides the Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace and Jongmyo Shrine, this place is home to hundreds of hanoks (traditional Korean homes) . The most popular one is Sanggojae, which is featured as Park Gae-In’s house in the 2010 K-drama Personal Taste . Dotted with houses featuring pagoda-style roofs accentuated with slightly uplifting eaves, this 600-year-old urban colony preserves Korean heritage through its cultural centres and museums. Bukchon-Ro 11-Gil, the central street of the village with its red and grey stone-clad walls, will seem familiar. Countless characters from K-dramas like Twelve Nights and She Was Pretty have been seen ambling along this street every now and then. Insider tip: There are hanbok (the conventional attire of Korea) rental outlets in the palace complex offering voluminous and delicate long-sleeved traditional costumes, along with hairstyling services. Dress the part and twirl around as you enjoy an authentic regal escape.

Myeongdong Shopping Centre

The underground Myeongdong shopping centre is a conglomeration of small shops selling eye-catching goods in all shapes and sizes including K-drama memorabilia. If you thought that the world of K-dramas is expansive, then wait till you see the world of K-drama and K-pop merchandise; it is astronomical. Prepare to get hallyu -cinated as you grab the best of K-pop light sticks, season’s greetings, pop sockets, scarves, vinyl records, photobooks, keychains, cushions, pins, fridge magnets, mascot plushies, deco tapes and Lomo cards—the list is never-ending. They even have fan membership kits. If you loved the earrings and hair clips seen on the heroines, you are in for a treat. BBQ Olive Chicken Caf

Visit the BBQ Olive Chicken Café A.K.A the Goblin Korean Fried Chicken Café. This is the restaurant Sunny owned in the K-drama Goblin . This place is known for the best tub of succulent Chimaek, the Korean equivalent of American fried chicken and beer. Chimaek is a regular ritual for young Koreans, as they get together to unwind on a weekday evening after a productive day at work, bonding over more than 11 varieties of fried chicken. This café looks exactly like how it was filmed in the drama, with its eclectic blue door and retro-looking floor tiles. Located in the middle of a bustling city, this three-storey fast food outlet has large glass window panels that allow you to watch the city go by. Insider tip: The BBQ Olive Chicken Café has the infamous black fedora possibly worn by Lee Dong Wook in Goblin ; the restaurant staff sports the uniform worn by Sunny throughout the show.

The fictional remote North Korean village, where the ever-charming Captain Ri from Crash Landing on You resides, is actually Taean. The bucolic village is a three-hour drive away from Seoul. Jin-Bin fans can lwalk through the village and explore Ri Jeong Hyeok’s sage-fenced home and feel the love in the air. 18 Iconic K-Drama Locations You Can Actually Visit In South Korea

~Live out your K-drama dreams.~

Grace Lee

BuzzFeed Contributor

From plot twists to sappy romances, there's so many things to like about a good K-drama. But if you're like me and you're curious about where these dramas are filmed, this post is the one to save for your South Korea travel itinerary.

Crowds of shoppers along the pedestrianized streets of Myeong-dong overlooked by the neon lights of stores in the heart of Seoul at night

A day of eating at delicious restaurants and visiting locations where my fav K-dramas were filmed? Count me in!

But first, here are two helpful tips when traveling in South Korea:

1. Use Naver Maps to find directions! It's super easy to use and is available in English.

2. Make sure you have a bus and subway card. In South Korea, transportation by bus or subway is much more common and efficient than cars or taxis. So, to ensure that you're not stuck in hours of traffic, buy a bus and subway card.

Now, onto the locations:

1. Jageun Maeul

Characters in front of a restaurant

K-Drama: Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo

Address:  35 Jeongneung-ro 6-gil, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul

The legendary Bok Chicken restaurant isn't exactly a fried chicken restaurant in real life, but it is open for business! They have a variety of traditional Korean dishes that you can try, ranging from traditional green onion pancakes to soft tofu stew. The seating arrangement is exactly like the one in the drama, so you'll get a perfect feel of what it was like filming there.

2. Jumunjin Breakwater

Woman handing man flowers

K-Drama:   Guardian: The Lonely and Great God

Address:  81-32 Gyohang-ri, Jumunjin-eup, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do

Remember the "red scarf" scene where Eun Tak accidentally summons the Goblin? Re-create this iconic scene at Juminjin Breakwater on Juminjin Beach! This popular tourist beach is great for a day trip out in Gangwon-do.

3. Hansung Apartments

Character sitting on stairs of apartment villa

K-Drama:   Fight for My Way

Address:  49-38 Beonna-gil, Suyeong-ro, Namgu, Busan

Four childhood best friends living right next to each other — what could go wrong, right? Famously known as the Namil Villa, this apartment complex gave way to countless memorable scenes. But even in real life, there are residents living in the apartments, so make sure to respect their privacy when visiting.

4. Sinchon Graffiti Tunnel

Men walking through a tunnel

K-Drama:  Guardian: The Lonely and Great God

Address:  Sinchon-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul

*Cue the dramatic music* Re-create this iconic scene at Sinchon Graffiti Tunnel! All you need is a long black coat and a whole lot of confidence. (Also, maybe some green onions to make it a touch more authentic.)

5. Hapcheon Movie Theme Park

Man walking down a street

K-Drama:   Youth of May

Address:  757, Hapcheonhosu, Yongju-myeon, Hapcheon-gu, Gyeongsangnam-do

A majority of Youth of May was filmed at Hapcheon Movie Theme Park, and it's easy to see why! The location is a bubble of what South Korea looked like in the 1980s, with makeshift stores and railroad-track roads.

6. Seoul Land

Woman excited at an amusement park

K-Drama:   Strong Woman Do Bong Soon

Address:  181 Gwangmyeong-ro, Makgye-dong, Gwacheon-si, Gyeonggi-do

7. Baekje Cultural Land

Man protecting women from the rain

K-Drama:   Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo

Address:  455 Baekjemun-ro, Gyuam-myeon, Buyeo-gun, Chungcheongnam-do

Who's chopping the onions?! This iconic scene in Scarlet Heart   Ryeo  was shot inside Baekje Cultural Land. Inside the center, there is a museum, temple, restaurant, and rest areas. It's a true representation of the Baekja Kingdom, which is mirrored in  Scarlet Heart Ryeo !

8. Garden of the Morning Calm

Man and woman in garden

K-Drama:   Love in the Moonlight

Address:  432 Sumogwon-ro, Sang-myeon, 상면 Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do

Take in the beautiful sight of colorful flowers at the Garden of the Morning Calm. You'll be surrounded by more than 300,000 square meters of 5,000 plant species. In fact, it's actually the oldest private garden in South Korea — makes sense, considering that the drama filmed here was a historical fiction one!

9. Depohang Port Light House

Couple taking picture in front of lighthouse

K-Drama:   Strong Woman Do Bong Soon

Address:  64, Daepohang-gil, Sokcho-si, Gangwon-do

While you're there, you can also spend a relaxing day at the beach and grab a bite to eat at Sokcho Jar Cold Raw Fish Soup, a restaurant famous for their fresh sashimi.

10. Hotel Seine

Picture of pink hotel

K-Drama:   Hotel Del Luna

Address:  28-5 Donhwamun-ro 11-gil, Nakwon-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul

Unlike the name, this place is actually a café. It's a vintage, hotel-themed café complete with a rooftop lounge, which is quite the opposite of its role in Hotel Del Luna . You're welcome to sit in one of the cozy parlors or go up to the lounge with a full view of the nighttime city lights. Fun fact: The rooftop lounge is named the "Full Moon Rooftop Lounge," which is the same as the meaning of Man Wol's name (full moon).

11. Seoul Fortress Wall

Woman and man talking

K-Drama:   Itaewon Class

Address:  622-83 Changsin-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul

Remember Jo Yi Seo and Park Saero Yi's mini date in the last episode? The last destination they stopped by was here! The Seoul Fortress Wall runs 18.6 kilometers around the center of Seoul, making it a beautiful place to hike and view the city lights.

12. Dal.komm Coffee

Man and woman at cafe

K-Drama: Descendants of the Sun

Address:  23-5 Songdo 2(i)-dong, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon

Dal.komm Coffee is a perfect place to enjoy a nice cup of coffee to start off your day! Yoo Shi Jin and Kang Mo Yeon had multiple coffee dates here in the drama, but they also experienced a breakup here (cue the tears). This was also the place where Yoo Shi Jin and Seo Dae Yeong brought their stuffed animal girlfriends!

13. Gwanghwamun Square

Man on a horse meeting a woman

K-Drama:   The King: Eternal Monarch

Address:  172 Sejong-daero, Sejongno, Jongno-gu, Seoul

Gwanghwamun Square is just as beautiful in person as depicted in this scene. During the day, you can see a clear view of King Sejong's statue, whereas at night, the colorful lights and waterworks are the main spectacle.

14. Hotel Midas Resort

People at a wedding

K-Drama: The Penthouse: War in Life (Season 2)

Address: 2245 Bukhangang-ro, Oeseo-myeon, Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do

Oh Yoon Hee and Ha Yoon Cheol famously crashed Cheon Seo Jin and Joo Dan Tae's wedding at the Hotel Midas Resort. If you do stay at the hotel, there probably won't be another wedding crash, but there are plenty of other sights to see. Because of the hotel's location, the rooms allow you to enjoy beautiful scenery right on the terrace.

15. Cheonggye Plaza

Man in front of plaza

K-Drama:   Vincenzo

Address:  162 Cheonggyecheon-ro, Jung-gu, Seoul

A First-Time Visit to Seoul With K-Dramas as My Guide

Illuminated Buildings And City Street At Night. Photo Taken In Seoul South Korea

I was agonizingly late for barbecue on my first night in Seoul when I emerged at Gwanghwamun Square, flustered and overwhelmed, hoping my dinner companions hadn't finished the banchan without me. That's when I saw it: the countenance of a stone warrior staring down at me from his pedestal. I gaped back at him, my galbi cravings briefly forgotten. This was my first time in this plaza, and yet my brain insisted I'd been here before. Amid the disorientation of navigating this unfamiliar place, here was something I recognized—from its role in the 2018 Korean show  Memories of the Alhambra.

South Korea Seoul . Gangnam installation in honor of the famous song Gangnam Style

A street art installation in Seoul in honor of Psy’s famous song

Even after Psy horse-trotted his way to YouTube glory and BTS built Army, its global fan club, I remained largely ignorant of the Korean Wave, or Hallyu—a Chinese term for South Korea's ascendant cultural power. But as I pined for far-flung adventures during the pandemic, I found companionship in Korean dramas. My gateway series was  Crash Landing on You, an endearing if implausible romance between a South Korean heiress and a North Korean soldier; I blazed through 16 episodes in 5 days, my heart alternately migrating to my throat and melting into a maudlin lump. The fashion, the food, the tableaux, the personalities: This was my world. I lived here now. I added Korean slang to Google Translate, Korean won to my XE currency app, Korean beauty products to my Sephora cart, and Korean ingredients to my grocery list. These viewing sessions became my closest approximation to travel, filling the passport-shaped hole in my life. By the time South Korea's borders reopened, Seoul had jumped from “someday” to “ASAP” on my travel wish list—and I guess I wasn't alone. “We've seen a huge interest in travel to Korea,” said Grant Ekelund of InsideAsia Tours , which offers tailor-made adventures to the country. “It's been increasing for years, but the pandemic accelerated it.”

After I arrived, I saw recognizable elements all around me. Searching bleary-eyed for a meal soon after landing, I found comfort in the signage at Angel-in-Us, the setting of Yoon Se-Ri and Ri Jeong-Hyeok's reunion in  Crash Landing on You. So what if it's Seoul's answer to Starbucks? At the upscale skin-care emporium Tirtir , I sprang for a purple tube of Collagen Core Glow Mask, whose branding claimed responsibility for the absurd good looks of Hyun Bin—star of  Memories of the Alhambra and  Crash Landing on You. I passed street stalls selling the ppopgi candy I knew from  Squid Game and the fish-shaped bungeoppang pastries I'd craved while watching  Vincenzo. Two hours from Seoul in Jeonju, I checked into Hagindang, a century-old hanok house that featured prominently in the period drama  Mr. Sunshine.  For a place I'd never visited before, South Korea was comfortingly familiar.

My K-drama curriculum had largely inhabited two extremes: slick ultra-modern dramas and historic period fare. Sure enough, I was met with glittering tapestry of lightning-fast Internet and robot waiters and cutting-edge toilets, but at every turn the country’s rich past stood out amid its kinetic future: in the historic palaces dwarfed by gleaming towers, in the traditional hanji paper-making ateliers steps from wacky Instagram-trap museums, in the chic boutiques and cafés nestled amid the atmospheric hanok houses of Ikseondong and Bukchon.

“Having these pockets throughout the city keeps Koreans grounded in their traditions, grounded in themselves,” said Meggie Yu, an American expat who first arrived in Seoul to study Korean history a decade ago. “Preserving these clear pieces of culture is almost an insurance policy for preserving itself.”

A woman walks past a mural depicting RM a member of Kpop group BTS in Goyang northwest of Seoul on June 15 2022.

A mural of BTS star RM, in the Goyang area

Going far beyond preservation, K-culture is now being exported to far corners of the globe. I joined Haley HyunJoo Yang, a K-pop reporter at the Korea JoongAng Daily , at a bar on a quiet street behind the Bank of Korea to get her thoughts on the juggernaut. Two decades ago, Haley’s father was dispatched to the United Kingdom by the government to promote Korean culture and tourism; despite his best efforts, K-pop didn’t take off at the time. “There was momentum, but it wasn’t successful,” she remembered. “My dad doesn’t know what’s happening now.”

What’s happening is world domination. “It would not be an exaggeration to say that Hallyu is the world’s biggest, fastest cultural paradigm shift in modern history,” Euny Hong wrote in  The Birth of Korean Cool: How One Nation Is Conquering the World Through Pop Culture , back in 2014—when BTS were little more than a twinkle in a record executive’s eye. Fans descend in droves to tread in the footsteps of their favorite idols: Travelers are requesting tours that encompass K-drama filming locations or K-pop concerts, so much so that InsideAsia now offers Hallyu itineraries.

InsideAsia’s Seoul team arranged for a mother-of-pearl manicure for me at Unistella, a temple to nail art where K-pop royalty BlackPink go for their sculptural talons. Afterward, I had lunch at Yujeong Sikdang, a humble canteen where BTS hung out when they were unknown trainees. Today it's an Army pilgrimage site, wallpapered with cutouts of the pop stars like the inside of a teenage girl's locker. I ate vegetarian bibimbap under the smoldering eyes of Jimin and J-Hope.

26 Best Beachfront Hotels in Europe

BTS loyalists also pay their respects at Bit & Boot, the salon where members go to have their lustrous tresses coiffed. “A lot of international fans come here just to take a picture of the building,” cofounder Choi Soo Chan told me. As I left, my guide murmured that Monsta X's Joohoney was walking past. That combination of words and letters meant nothing to me in the moment, but to a not-insignificant segment of the world's population, my fleeting glimpse of the K-pop star alone would have made the trip worthwhile.

Of course, a culture is so much more than its celluloid depictions, and Seoul defies many K-drama tropes. But when I saw heartthrob Song Joong-ki's handsome face smiling at me from a billboard or dug into a platter of yukjeon beef pancakes like the ones Won-deuk craved in  100 Days My Prince, I felt grateful for my year of incessant bingeing. Pop culture helped me find familiarity in the foreign, and in the relentless AI-powered forward march of Seoul, that makes a big difference.

7 Places To Visit In South Korea: A K-drama Fan's Fairyland

A scene from "Goblin"

The beauty of South Korea is such that a traveller can spend hours roaming its streets without exhausting the list of activities to do, cuisines to try, and sites to visit.

For a K-drama enthusiast, it only gets better as some of the most iconic scenes from top K-dramas make for great spots to explore as a newcomer in the city. It ranks on the top spot on bucket lists, as it was featured in the Park Seo-Joon series "Itaewon Class," an instant global hit on Netflix.

Do not be taken aback if you are halted by a large group of dancers blocking the road with their quick moves while walking along Noksapyeong Bridge. It is common at this place, especially after dark on weekends. It is the same stretch where Park Seo-Joon of the K-drama "Itaewon Class" often took a walk.

You can enjoy the fresh air, run your hands and feet through the water, and collect shells to take back as a souvenir.

For fans who want to recreate the iconic scene from "Goblin," vendors around the beach rent props such as the red scarf and buckwheat flower bouquets.

WHAT ARE THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN SEOUL?

1. visit gyeongbokgung palace, one of the best things to see in seoul.

Best things to see in Seoul: Gyeongbokgung palace

Like most palaces in Korea, their names are unpronounceable for non-Korean speakers. Well, try at least to remember Gyeongbokgung, as this is the main palace in Seoul . There are 5 main Royale Palaces in Seoul ( more info here ).

Gyeongbokgung Palace is truly stunning. This is probably what most tourists visit at first in Seoul. It is located in the center of the city, at the end of the main avenue ( Gwanghwamun Square ) where you will come across the statue of Admiral Yi Sun-Shin and of King Sejong, two famous figures in the history of South Korea .

As for the palace, it is gigantic and it will take you about 2 hours to visit .

The architecture of the buildings is just magnificent and they are all very well preserved. The palace was built in 1395 and it has been destroyed many times, notably by various Japanese invasions. Its name literally means “the palace of resplendent happiness”.

2. Visit Changdeokgung Palace and the secret garden, another beautiful place in Seoul

changdeokgung

This is one of our favorite palaces in Seoul! It was also the favorite palace of many kings of Korea! Changdeokgung is a one of the main places in Seoul.

Surrounded by mountains and hills the site offers a beautiful harmony with nature. It was once a privileged resort for the kings and their subjects.

MAKE SURE TO VISIT THE SECRET GARDEN

The main sight of Changdeokgung , is the Huwon Garden , also called Secret Garden. The Huwon Garden can be visited by booking in advance with a guide. Reservations can be made online or directly on-site (but be aware that it can be fully booked).

Additionally, you can enjoy a palace tour, titled ‘Changdeokgung by Moonlight’, during fall and spring from Donhwamun Gate. We highly recommend this tour by the way. It is absolutely magical to visit the temple at night. You can book a full guided tour in English here .

3. Head to the Namsan Tower for the best view of Seoul

Things to do in Seoul

Korea does not have many distinctive monuments such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, The Marina Bay Sands in Singapore or the Pisa Tower in Rome. However, standing at 480m above sea level, the Namsan Tower has an observation deck at the very top for stunning 360 views of the city.

This is probably the most recognizable monument in Seoul. We wrote a full post here for more info .

You can access the park on a nice walk through Namsan Park . You can start from the Grand Hyatt , a majestic hotel located at the bottom of the park.

If you want to experience something even more fun, we recommend that you take the cable car which makes it a fun activity and it’s an unusual way to see the city.

Here is our local tip

Head there just before sunset to catch one of the best sunset lookouts in the city! Truly breathtaking. At night the vista is even more impressive with the millions of lights around the city. It’s a romantic area, which is really worth a visit.

Ikseon -dong is becoming a trendy hangout for locals. You will feel back in the 1920s while walking down the narrow alleys. There the Hanoks have been revamped to become trendy cafes, bars, and restaurants. This should be on your to-do list while in Seoul (Trust us, this is our best local tip).

The changing seasons make the surrounding nature even more beautiful and constantly changing.

With a large majority of the South Korean landscape being mountainous, it is not surprising that rock climbing is an extremely popular sport for Koreans.

While the most famous peaks and mountain ranges lie outside of Seoul (such as Seoraksan ), the capital has Bukhansan (or “Mount Bukhan”) which is the highest peak in Seoul, reaching 836.5 meters above sea level. It is a difficult but rewarding climb.

The breathtaking views of Seoul and the surrounding area are an experience in itself. Beyond the superb panorama, it is an opportunity to meet very friendly Koreans on the roads and share a snack with them along the paths. Remember to take lots of water and put on your hiking shoes.

After visiting head to Samcheong-dong a charming neighborhood at the bottom of Bukchon Village, with plenty of unique shops and great restaurants. The area is very arty, with great cafes and a good vibe overall.

Gwanghwamun Square

At the end of the stream, you can directly walk to Gangwhahmun Square, which is one of the main avenues located at the heart of Seoul.

You will see two very big statues. 1 of King Sejong, the most respected king of the Joseon Dynasty and inventor of the Hangeul (Korean alphabet). The 2nd statue is Admiral Yi Sun-shin , a naval commander who won many battles against the Japanese navy during the Japanese war in the 16th century.

Both are key figures of Korean history.

gwangjang market, food zone, Seoul

Built at the very beginning of the 20th century, the traditional Gwangjang market has around 5,000 independent shops and boutiques selling everything, including high-quality hanboks (traditional Korean costumes). You can get lost in the labyrinth of shops and alleys.

At the market, you can taste many local specialtie s such as bindaeddeok , a kind of savory pancake. Enjoy this with makgeolli , a rice alcohol drink. Everything is very authentic there and the atmosphere is really unique!

Don’t try to resist, just sit in one of the many little hawkers and pick what you want to eat directly from the stand. This is a unique experience that will immerse you a bit more in the fascinating culture of this country.

One of the best ways to enjoy the famous Hangang River “Han River” is to cruise it and enjoy the scenic views and fresh air.

During the cruise, you can admire many iconic landmarks, such as the N Seoul Tower , and famous tourist attractions such as Jeoldusan Park and the 63 City Building .

We recommend joining the cruise at night, as this is when the city is even more magical.

Things to do in Seoul: Namsangol

Namsangol Hanok village is located in the north side of Namsan in Seoul. It is the perfect place to discover more about the history of the Joseon period. Namsangol is famous for its preservation of Hanoks. These are traditional Korean houses.

Five of these Hanoks in Namsangol were located in separate villages and then later brought back together to form the Namsangol in 1998. The objective was to develop the Namsangol Hanok village as a cultural garden in the middle of Seoul.

It shows the lifestyles of Koreans in ancient times from farmers to kings.

Hanok houses are a source of fascination for all tourists who visit South Korea. At least for us, we found the architecture so beautiful and couldn’t wait to visit more of these Hanoks when we arrived in Seoul. With their wooden construction, underfloor heating system, historic furniture, and beautiful fireplaces, they are simply exceptional.

Things to do in Seoul: Ihwa Mural Village

Ihwa Mural Village is a unique place in Seoul, completely devoted to Street Art. The walls of Ihwa village have been completely taken over by artists over the years.

Street Art in Seoul is filled with joy and color. Everything is fresh, delicate and so cute, a real pleasure for the eyes. And we must admit that despite the dozens of visitors who roam the place, we would love to live in such a cute neighborhood.

Ihwa is actually a village that was meant to disappear. But a project implemented at the instigation of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism changed the destiny of this place.

The “Ihwa-dong Naksan Project” began in 2006 and took place over approximately 6 months. More than 70 artists have made their contribution and have thus created unique, varied works of all kinds: paintings, sculptures, installations, etc.

Artists who were supported by some locals as well as university students who volunteered. They decided to rehabilitate this place to an art place and encourage visitors to come and discover this almost abandoned place before that.

18. Changgyeonggung Palace our favorite one in Seoul

Things to do in Seoul

Changgyeonggung is our favorite palace in Seoul. It is located in Jongno-gu district, in the heart of Seoul. Changgyeonggung is known to hold the oldest throne room in Korea .

Seoul has 5 Grand Palaces. To know more about them, you can  check out our post here.

Changgyeonggung is not as important as the main Palace:  Gyeongbokgung Palace . However, we always enjoyed visiting Changgyeonggung each season, as for us it is the most charming one and has a beautiful garden . It is also the very first palace we visited when  moving to South Korea .

Changgyeonggung is different to the others as there is a big a space devoted to the daily life of the family which is much larger than the space devoted to political affairs.

The site thus contains many more personal stories about the royal family, love and hatred between the king and the prince or even the tensions between the queen and the servants of the court.

19. Deoksugung Palace, the most modern one

Things to do in Seoul: deoksugung

Deoksugung i s one of five royal palaces located in Seoul. Its name can be translated as the palace of virtuous longevity.

One of the specifics of Deoksugung Palace is that it is the only royal Palace housing both buildings in the traditional Korean style but also buildings in Western architecture.

As Deoksugung Palace stays open until 9 pm, it is best to visit the Palace at night. At least we enjoyed it much more with all the beautiful lights inside the palace and surrounded by the city lights from the surrounding skyscrapers of Seoul. The contrasts of both make it a unique sight.

You can spend 24 hours (or more) living with the temple monks and most importantly, to the rhythm of the temple. This would certainly be one of your most memorable experiences in South Korea. In the heart of Seoul, Gilsangsa Temple is in the perfect location for a convenient stay during your trip to Seoul. You can stay in the city and still experience the temple way of life.

Bongeunsa Temple in Seoul

DMZ from North Korea side

If you want to see North Korea up close , join a day tour at the DMZ. The 235-kilometer demilitarized zone (DMZ) that separates the two countries has become a tourist attraction, especially as this No Man’s Land has been colonized by flora and fauna of great interest.

It is however only possible to access it by an organized excursion, which will take you to visit the key points along the area.

From the observatories, you may have the chance to observe deer, which take advantage of this natural environment.

There is also a more comprehensive tour, which includes the UN-managed JSA (Joint Security Area) which takes you inside the area. You can get there by bus from Seoul, it’s a full day trip.

You can book directly here .

Noryangjin - Splash

The incredible Noryangjin Fish Market is not only the biggest fish market in Seoul but certainly one of the oldest covered markets in South Korea! Indeed, it has existed since 1927.

The atmosphere of Noryangjin Market is quite special. Here you can discover hundreds of different fishes!

Another particularity of this market which brings together several thousand tourists each year. You can buy your food from a merchant and go directly to a restaurant in the Noryangin Market, upstairs. They will grill it for you with rice or prepare it in sashimi…

It’s a fantastic experience in Seoul not to be missed!

47432-Suwon

Suwon is the capital of Gyeonggi province . The city is very close to Seoul, about thirty kilometers to the south. In addition, it is very easy to get there by public transport: less than an hour by metro by taking line 1.

Suwon is best known for the Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site . But there are several other places to see in the city including the royal tombs of Yungneung and Geolleung. You can also take wonderful walks on the city walls.

Spending more than a day here is better for getting a good feel of the city.

Nami Island Korea

Name island is a small and charming island near Seoul.

Nami became famous thanks to a drama, released in the early 2000s, part of it was filmed on the island.

Following the success of the show, the island became a popular destination for drama fans who still travel to this day from all over the world. There is also a dedicated trail for fans where they can retrace the highlights of the drama.

However, for nature lovers, Nami Island is the perfect escape from Seoul ( more info on the best day trips from Seoul here )

Nami is especially a magical place in the fall, whose blazing trees offer a colorful spectacle. We loved the field of red, pink and orange maples. As is the golden yellow ginko alley.

Best things to do in Seoul

These famous Korean saunas can be found on almost every street corner. They are usually very cheap (KRW 5,000 to KRW 10,000 per day). These saunas called jjimjilbang, are open 24/7 every day. At night people are even sleeping there.

WHERE TO STAY IN SEOUL?

his question torments many tourists looking for a comfortable and well-located hotel in the Korean capital. And it is not so easy to answer, because Seoul is so vast and visitors’s tastes can be so different.

For instance, Gangnam is nothing like Bukchon , and the vitality of Myeongdong contrasts with the relative calm of the banks of the Han River…

WE RECOMMEND STAYING IN JONGNO DISTRICT

Best things to do in Seoul: Ikseon-dong

To make it convenient during your stay in Seoul, we highly recommend that you choose a place in Jongno .

Jongno is the district that represents the historic center of Seoul and the Capital of the Joseon dynasty for more than 600 years, it shelters three of the five royal palaces (Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung).

It’s a bit like Seoul’s postcard, where you can admire the imposing statue of Admiral Lee Sun-Shin against the backdrop of Gyeongbok Palace and Bukhansan Mountain in the background. A place where political history continues to play out, since it is also here that Cheongwadae was built, the Blue House (today the main residence of the Korean President).

Insadong, the main pedestrian street in Jongno, is the ideal place to find local craft shops, antique dealers, and even ceramicists . The Ssamzie- shopping center, the O’Sulloc tea house as well as the numerous cafes and art galleries give a more contemporary atmosphere to this tourist spot.

A little further, the Jogyesa Buddhist temple and the Jongmyo shrine in the east will fulfill your search for spirituality.

BEST HOTELS IN JONGNO

1.  Bukchon Bonum 1957 Hanok Hotel   for a unique experience in a Hanok (Korean traditional wooden house) with a garden. All rooms have heated floor and comes with traditional bedding. You will also have your private bathroom and a breakfast is served daily. It is a beautiful place which we highly recommend for your stay in Seoul. Book  here .

PREPARING FOR YOUR TRIP TO SEOUL

Best things to do in Seoul

1. Getting your flight ticket

To get there you can opt for various airlines. However, we highly recommend Korean Air or Asiana Airlines as they offer outstanding service and good value for money. If you want to compare different flights and get the best deals, click here .

Note that there are 2 airports in Seoul. The main international hub is Incheon Airport (Incheon is actually a city close to the capital). The second airport, Gimpo International Airport, is used more for domestic flights although there are international flights arriving/departing from this airport. Both are served by train/bus.

2. Visa requirements

Visa for Korea is not necessary for most countries to stay 90 days (more info here). During your flight, you will be given 2 forms to fill out (one for immigration and one for customs). The passage through immigration/customs depends on traffic at the airport but is generally fast.

If you don’t get the forms on the plane, don’t panic, you can get them at the airport, just before going through immigration. Whether at Seoul International Airport or elsewhere at the country’s international airports.

3. Renting a car in Korea

Renting a car as a foreigner can be very complicated in Korea. That’s why we highly recommend booking with Trazy here , for the best rate and specialized for foreigners.

4. Get a Sim Card or eSim Card

We highly recommend getting a sim card to connect to the internet when visiting Seoul. This would be much easier when navigating through the city than having to translate things with Google Translate. You can buy very cheap sim card here .

5. What to book in advance?

Apart from your hotel of course, we recommend booking for certain activities ahead of time, as it can get very busy.

Reservation for the visit of the DMZ. This is a great activity in Seoul, however, it requires that you book in advance. You can do so here .

Book your Lotte Tower Observatory ticket here . It is the tallest skyscraper and the view of the city is impressive

Dongdaemun Design Plaza, South Korea

If you’ve always dreamed of stepping into the shoes of your favorite Hallyu star, you’re in luck, as many Korean TV series and movie filming locations are open to the public. We’ve rounded up a list of the most popular ones, so get ready to turn your K-drama fantasies into reality!

Did you know – Culture Trip now does bookable, small-group trips? Pick from authentic, immersive Epic Trips , compact and action-packed Mini Trips and sparkling, expansive Sailing Trips .

Korean Folk Village (한국민속촌)

Featuring Joseon-era architecture, traditional performances, and hanbok-clad staff , the sprawling folk village Min Sok Chon in Yongin, South Korea is designed to transport visitors back in time to the country’s dynastic days . For this reason, it has and continues to be a popular filming location for a number of Korean period dramas and films. Among them include the wildly popular The Moon that Embraces the Sun , My Love from the Star , The Face Reader , and Masquerade .

Nami Island (남이섬)

Ferry to Nami Island

Nami Island , a countryside destination loved by nature enthusiasts and K-drama fans (it was a filming location for the wildly successful Winter Sonata ), is an idyllic stretch of land made up of tree-lined paths, water-side picnic spots, and nature-inspired sculptures and artwork. Located just 63 kilometers from Seoul , the destination makes for a great day trip for visitors of all ages. Furthermore, each season offers something unique, whether its cherry blossoms in the spring, water sports in the summer or music festivals in the fall.

Suncheon Open Film Location (순천 드라마 촬영장)

Comprised of some 200 houses scattered across three ‘villages’ that each portray Korea in a different decade from the 1950s to the 1970s, the Suncheon Open Film Location is the largest film set on the peninsula. Here, visitors can see the filming locations of some of the country’s most beloved TV series and films like Bread, Love and Dreams and Gangnam Blues . They can also enjoy a bit of nostalgia by dressing up in old-fashioned school uniforms and sampling buchimgae (pan-fried foods) and dotorimuk (acorn jelly) at a traditional open Korean tavern. The realistic set is especially popular in the springtime, when the apricot and peach blossoms bloom.

Dongdaemun Design Plaza (동대문디자인플라자)

As one of Seoul’s most eccentric modern architectural structures , the Dongdaemun Design Plaza is without a doubt the epicenter of all things design in South Korea. Appealing particularly to young trendsetters with its wide variety of attractions and events (including Seoul Fashion Week), the neo-futuristic complex is a fully-equipped facility where visitors can enjoy food, shopping, and entertainment all in one place. K-drama fans may also recognize it as a filming location for the popular shows My Love from the Star , The Producers , and She Was Pretty .

Jumunjin Beach (주문진해변)

Jumunjin beach, Gangneung, South Korea

Situated in the city of Gangneung , Jumunjin Beach is a sandy stretch of coastline known for its natural beauty, fresh seafood , and K-drama affiliations. Its unusually blue water made it the perfect background for the famous scene of Goblin: The Lonely and Great God , when Ji Eun-tak (Kim Go-eun) first summons Kim Shin (Gong Yoo). Since it appeared on the TV show, Jumunjin Beach has attracted throngs of fans eager to snap selfies on the famous site. After getting your photo, head to nearby Anmok Beach, where stunning views and gorgeous seaside cafés await you.

Daehan Dawon Tea Plantation (보성녹차밭 대한다원)

Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful places in South Korea, Daehan Dawon in Boseong, Jeollanam Province is an oasis of verdancy and tranquility. Blanketed in soft, rolling hills of beautifully landscaped tea hedges, the farm functions as one of the biggest producers of the country’s green-tea products, and is perhaps the area’s most popular tourist attraction. It’s also the site where Shim Cheong (Jun Ji-hyun) is almost captured by Lord Yang’s swordsmen, but just in the nick of time, is saved by Dam Ryung (Lee Min-ho) in Legend of the Blue Sea . While you’re there, try the city’s iconic green tea snacks such as green tea ice cream and green tea kalguksu (noodle soup), or the province’s signature dish, tteokgalbi, grilled short ribs patties served on a sizzling hot plate.

Sanmotoonge (산모퉁이)

Terrace views at Sanmotoonge

Housed in a lavish Buam-dong mansion and offering breathtaking vistas of the Seoul Fortress Wall , Sanmootonge is a café loved by local hikers and K-drama fans alike. Here, patrons can sit under umbrellas on the cafe’s terrace or in one of its beautifully adorned rooms that look out over the neighborhood. Fans of The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince will appreciate the many paintings and photographs of Hallyu stars Gong Yoo and Yoon Eun-hye in various scenes of the drama, which was partially filmed at the café. Prices, like the hill on which Sanmootonge is perched, are steep, but the views are worth the extra few thousand won.

White Block Art Center (화이트블럭)

A visit to Paju’s Heyri Art Village wouldn’t be complete without popping into Gallery White Block . The modern interior of this gallery-cum-café, as its name suggests, resembles a giant block with white walls, high ceilings, and copious amounts of natural light. For this reason, it has become a popular filming location for Korean dramas including Suspicious Partner , On the Way to the Airport , and Introverted Boss . After browsing the paintings, photographs and sculptures on display across Gallery White Block’s six exhibition halls, grab a cup of coffee on the first floor and enjoy the views of the Heyri pond.

Itaewon Land (이태원랜드)

Itaewon may be known for its raucous nightlife , but tucked away just off the main strip of bars and restaurants is Itaewon Land, a five-story jjimjilbang made famous after its appearance in the body-swapping scene of Secret Garden , a popular K-drama. Its various relaxation rooms such as the pine room and salt room are sure to help you to de-stress while its traditional sauna’s red clay room and flat stone room will most certainly allow you to sweat out all the toxins from last night’s soju session. With a number of guest rooms available for overnight stays, Itaewon Land is also a great (and affordable) place to crash after an evening out on the town.

The Travel-Friendly Earbuds — LG TONE Free FP9

Girl at Seongsan Ilchulbong Mountain - K-pop and K-drama Filming Locations

Visiting these K-pop and K-drama filming locations was a dream come true for me. Honestly, with a good pair of earbuds, my experience was made infinitely better.

It was my first time trying out LG’s TONE Free FP9 Earbuds and I really loved its noise cancellation feature which drowned out the background noise — allowing me to be fully immersed in my favourite Korean OSTs.

Music sounded clear and multi-dimensional thanks to technology from British audio maker, Meridian Audio . Plus, I could customise my audio settings using the LG TONE Free app . My favourite was the Bass Boost, which enhanced the beats of the song so I could groove to the music better! 🎶

But I have to say, the best part was even before reaching Korea. Having wireless freedom while watching in-flight entertainment meant that I wouldn’t get tangled in wires while eating or going to the bathroom! 😋

I also didn’t have to worry about battery life as it was able to last through the day with a single charge.

Most of all, I was really impressed by the auto-cleaning UVnano charging case, which cleans the earbuds by reducing 99.9% of bacteria* when charging the case.

10 Must Watch K-Dramas That Aren’t Romances (& Where To Stream Them)

20 steamy k-dramas you should watch today, 10 k-dramas with heartbreaking plot twists.

  • Time travel in K-dramas elevates romantic, detective, and historical stories with sci-fi or fantasy twists.
  • While some K-dramas overuse time travel, the best ones cleverly use the trope to tell captivating and unique stories.
  • Shows like "A Time Called You" and "Twinkling Watermelon" explore time travel to unravel mysteries and change fates in heartwarming ways.

The idea of traveling through time is a powerful storytelling tool popularized by Hollywood movies, anime series, and the best time travel K-dramas . For K-dramas, the past often involves the Joseon era, riddled with political distress, turmoil, and drama. In some cases, K-dramas get creative and use time travel to solve crimes, like a heinous murder from the past, or with clues unraveling through time. In others, time travel is the narrative catalyst for an epic romance story of lovers separated by centuries.

Not surprisingly, many of the best K-dramas involving time travel use the concept to elevate romantic stories with a sci-fi or fantasy twist. In fact, this happens so much that K-drama audiences largely agree that it's become an overused plot device. That said, whether they are mainly romantic, detective, or historical K-dramas , there are dozens that cleverly use time travel to continue telling captivating stories, and the best time travel K-dramas use the trope to tell some of the most unique stories on the small screen.

25 A Time Called You

Released in 2023, a time called you.

Not available

Based on the Taiwanese TV series Someday or One Day, A Time Called You is a South Korean romantic fantasy drama that centers around a young woman named Koo Yeon-jun, grieving her boyfriend's passing. Koo Yeon-jun's life is thrown for a loop when she wakes up in the 1990s - in an eighteen-year-old girl's body named Min-ju. As she tries to solve the mystery and return home to her original body, her life is complicated further when she meets a young man who looks identical to her former lover.

A Time Called You is actually a remake of a Taiwanese series called Someday or One Day , and it features more science fiction than just time travel. It also includes the characters jumping into the bodies of others and having their own doppelgangers. There is a lot going on, but it makes for a fascinating watch.

The series follows two sets of characters played by Jeon Yeo-been and Ahn Hyo-seop who see both their pasts and futures controlled by an old cassette player. The song on the tape player helps to control aspects of their lives, but not everything, leading to a lot of moving parts in the story. There’s even a serial killer subplot for those who like their K-dramas with a little mystery.

The only reason the series isn’t truly the best time travel K-drama is that the finale of the series doesn’t offer a full measure of closure, leaving some things open-ended for the audience.

24 Again My Life

Released in 2022.

Again My Life isn’t the typical time travel K-drama. Rather than feature someone traveling straight into another time, the person is actually murdered early in the series, but then, the main character comes back as a college student . This actually works in his favor since in his previous life, he was a prosecuting attorney, so he’s already extremely intelligent and excels in the academic program, allowing him to spend his free time figuring out who set out to kill him.

Because this is one time travel series that is more of a thriller, there’s also an action element to it. Lee Joon-gi, who stars as the lead, has a black belt in taekwondo, and he does many of his own action scenes in the show instead of a stunt double. He won an award for his work on the show at the SBS Drama Awards after the show’s release.

23 Twinkling Watermelon

Twinkling watermelon.

Twinkling Watermelon is a South Korean television series that follows the lives of a group of high school friends who form a band. As they navigate the complexities of adolescence, they encounter challenges, build relationships, and discover their passions. Featuring a mix of music and drama, the show delves into themes of friendship, ambition, and self-discovery.

There are shades of Back to the Future in this time travel K-drama as a teenage boy (Ryeoun) ends up in his father’s high school years. The boy and his father (Choi Won-young as an adult and Choi Hyun-wook as a teenager) don’t see eye to eye when it comes to music. While he wants to pursue a career as a musician, his father doesn’t think it’s a good idea. Their fight is the catalyst for the time travel experience.

While in the past, he finds that his father is desperate to connect with another young woman, not one who becomes his mom. He also realizes that his father isn’t hearing impaired as he is as an adult. He decides to try to prevent the accident that causes the hearing loss as well as make sure his father ends up with his mother, even as he’s forming a band with him.

It’s a heartwarming story about getting to know one’s parents and understanding how one decision can change everything.

22 Lovely Runner

Released in 2024, lovely runner (2024).

Lovely Runner is a TV series that follows the story of a young athlete who rises to fame in the world of track and field. As the protagonist navigates the highs and lows of competitive sports, the series explores themes of perseverance, sacrifice, and personal growth.

Those who enjoy K-Pop, athletics, and love stories will certainly enjoy Lovely Runner . The series sees a former superstar named Sun-jae (Byeon Woo-seok) lives a life of mostly isolation while his career explodes. Im-sol (Kim Hye-yoon) is a superfan who has been supporting his career. In their 30s, however, they both wonder what their lives would have been like if they had done things differently. Of course, they also have a past connection.

When one of them dies, the other gets a chance to travel to the past to change their future, and it's revealed that they have both been doing everything they can to protect one another, even if it means their own lives might never be the same. The theme of the show is self-sacrifice as it explores what lengths someone will go to for someone they care about.

Interestingly, Beyon Woo-seok is not a trained K-pop singer, even though there are many artists who have crossed over into the acting world. Despite that, the song “Sudden Shower,” which was recorded for use in the show, charted, demonstrating that he’s got what it takes to lead a boy band.

21 Reborn Rich

The last few years have produced a lot of hugely successful K-dramas that have reached an international audience. Reborn Rich , however, was hugely successful at home as well. It was the most-watched K-drama in South Korea in 2022.

Like Again My Life , this series sees someone who is murdered get a chance to start a new life in a new body, but with the awareness of their previous life. This time, it’s someone who is a hardworking employee at a chaebol - a sprawling family-owned business, the kind that truly runs the economy in South Korea. When he sees something wrong and tries to do the right thing, he is killed for it. He ends up returning to life as the youngest member of a chaebol family in an earlier time and starts putting his knowledge of the future to use.

While the bare bones of the two stories are similar as both characters want revenge on those who took their lives, the worlds they explore are very different. Reborn Rich was nominated for a slew of awards in South Korea and ended up winning for Best Miniseries at the Seoul International Drama Awards.

The Best K-Dramas Based On Webtoons, Ranked

These top K-dramas ranked were once all popular webtoons and either got their start on the webtoons.com site or other sites and platforms.

20 My Perfect Stranger

My perfect stranger (2023).

My Perfect Stranger is a 2023 TV series that follows the story of a woman who discovers a mysterious stranger may be the key to solving a tragedy from her past. As she uncovers the truth, she must navigate a complex web of secrets and lies to uncover the truth about her own life.

When the two cross paths, they find that maybe their time traveling, and their lives, are actually linked to one another.

While most Korean dramas involving time traveling only see one character do the actual time traveling, My Perfect Stranger takes a risk in making both of its main characters time travelers . One does so on purpose though, while the other does not, which is where much of the intrigue comes from.

Hae Jun (Kim Dong Wook) is a journalist investigating a serial murder case who discovers a time machine and uses it to follow his own investigation. Yoon Young (Jin Ki Joo) discovers her mother dead and is then struck by a car, waking up in the same time that Hae Jun traveled to. As is true for many time travelers, they become trapped instead of able to travel between times. When the two cross paths, they find that maybe their time traveling, and their lives, are actually linked to one another.

Released In 2017

Tunnel (2017).

Tunnel is a South Korean television series that premiered in 2017. The show follows a detective, Kwang-ho, who travels back in time from 1986 to 2016 and teams up with a detective in the present day to solve a series of cold cases. As they work together, they uncover hidden secrets and unravel the mysteries of the past.

Instead of traveling to the past, Tunnel is a time travel K-drama that takes the audience to the future - in a manner of speaking. The present-day of the story is actually 1985 in which a string of murders are being investigated. When the detective (Choi Jin Hyuk) pursuing a lead runs after a suspect through a tunnel, he’s hit in the head and ends up 30 years in the future.

The murder mystery element of the series is inspired by a real string of serial killings in Korea, but the story is very much fictional. While the show presents itself as a murder mystery with a time-travel element, there’s also a romantic subplot and a family at the center of the story that makes it a drama that really shines. Incredibly popular outside of South Korea as well, Tunnel has been adapted for Thai television and an Indonesian remake is in development.

Want to enjoy some new TV series from Korea but without all the love and sappy sentimentality of some K-dramas? Check out these 10 great options.

18 Familiar Wife

Released in 2018, familiar wife (2018).

Familiar Wife is a South Korean television series that aired in 2018. The show revolves around Cha Joo-hyuk, a bank employee who travels back in time to when he was in his college days and alters the course of his life, resulting in a different reality where he is married to his first love, instead of his current wife.

A married man (Ji-Sung) with two kids is unhappy in his life. He’s depressed, hates his wife, and is unsatisfied at work. If he had only made different choices in his youth, he might have had a happier life. After traveling through a toll booth and losing control of his car, he winds up in the past and is able to change some of those decisions.

This is one time travel series that doesn't confine the protagonist to one time. Able to travel back and forth between the past and the present, he’s able to see how his different decisions have big outcomes later in life. It’s a similar concept to something like Sliding Doors but with many small changes to help someone understand their path in life. The music truly helps set the stage in the series as well with the soundtrack being nominated at the Korea Drama Awards.

Released In 2021

Times (2021).

Times is a South Korean television series that premiered in 2021, following the story of Seo Jin-Woo, a man who discovers a way to communicate with his past self through a mysterious walkie-talkie. As he navigates this new power, he attempts to prevent a tragic event that occurred in his past.

Times isn’t a traditional time travel K-drama in which one character is transported to another time period completely. Instead, the time travel is a result of a phone line that is able to traverse timelines. Several series have used similar ideas, often with the use of radios instead of phones, with varying degrees of success.

Two journalists, one in 2015 and one in 2020, connect over the use of the same phone line. Initially, they work together to prevent the death of one of their fathers, but while investigating, they uncover a conspiracy that involves time travel and corrupt politicians. The series is definitely a unique take among the time travel shows created for Korean television, which usually focus on history and a romantic subplot instead of political intrigue. While the series didn't reach widespread acclaim, star Lee Joo-young was nominated for Best New Actress at the Baeksang Arts Awards.

16 Tomorrow With You

Tomorrow with you (2017).

Tomorrow With You is a fantasy romance television series that follows Yoo So-joon, a successful real estate CEO who has the ability to time-travel through a subway. He meets Song Ma-rin, a photographer, and falls in love with her, but their relationship is threatened when he discovers his ability to travel through time is linked to his fate with her.

While Tomorrow With You does use romance like most time travel K-dramas do, it also has a unique idea for the time travel itself. While most Korean time travel shows involve time traveling by accident, the main character in Tomorrow With You can decide to travel in time. It’s also done so while traveling the subway instead of falling through a portal or suffering a life-threatening injury in order to do it.

Yoo So-Joon (Lee Je-Hoon) takes on time-traveling adventures when he discovers that Ma-Rin (Shin Min-A) and he are linked by a tragic accident in the future. Intrigued by her, he decides to save both her and himself. He believes that he can change their fates thanks to his ability, but he has to figure out just how they are connected. He resolves to marry her in order to make sure, and they become truly linked as he falls in love.

15 The Best Hit

The best hit (2017).

The Best Hit is a 2017 South Korean television series. The show revolves around the life of a K-pop idol, Lee Ji-hoon, who travels back to 1994 and meets his younger self and a young woman named Kim Hyun-jae. As Lee Ji-hoon navigates his past, he must confront his mistakes and learn valuable lessons about life, love, and friendship.

In The Best Hit, 1993 K-pop idol Yoo Hyun-Jae (Yoon Shi-yoon) gets accidentally transported to 2017, discovers that he is presumed dead after he disappeared in 1994, and investigates why he traveled through time. He does all this while struggling with living in the future, of course. Meanwhile, Hyun-Jae's biological son, Lee Ji-Hoon (Kim Min-jae), is secretly training to become an idol himself and is even enrolled in Star Punch Entertainment's program - while making his parents believe that he's studying for the civil service exams.

Also known as Hit the Top , and Best Punch , The Best Hit is an underrated gem in the world of the best time travel K-dramas. It's also an interesting way for the audience to get a look at what it takes to become a pop idol. Some of the stars of the series are also popular musicians. Kim Min-jae, for example, is also a rap artist and was nominated for the Best New Actor award at the Seoul Awards following the debut of the show.

14 Sisyphus: The Myth

Sisyphus: the myth (2021).

Sisyphus: The Myth is a South Korean television series that follows the story of Han Tae-sul, a genius engineer who tries to uncover the truth behind his brother's death. As he delves deeper into the mystery, he discovers a conspiracy that threatens the entire nation.

The storyline introduces a character who travels from the future to his current time.

This 2021 Netflix K-drama has some serious Terminator vibes to it, but it's full of good laughs, color, and drama. Han Tae-Sul (Cho Seung-woo) is a talented engineer who is determined to uncover the real reason behind his older brother's murder. If that wasn't enough, the storyline introduces a character who travels from the future to his current time. In the future, the world is dominated by gangs and military cliques. Survival entails having serious combat skills, and Gang Seo-Hae (Park Shin-Hye) is just the right warrior.

She travels back in time to help Tae-Sul on his dangerous journey after learning key evidence about his brother's death. What's interesting is that the series doesn't focus solely on the one-way time travel trip, but insists that the two main characters are responsible for breaking a time loop. Some critics disliked that Sisyphus: The Myth breaks its own established rules about time traveling, but it certainly keeps the audience on the edge of their seats.

13 Splash Splash Love

Released in 2015, splash splash love (2015).

Splash Splash Love is a South Korean television series that premiered in 2015. The fantasy romance drama tells the story of Lee Do, a high school student who travels back in time to the Goryeo Dynasty and meets Kim Mu, a prince who becomes his ally and friend. As Do navigates the complexities of court politics, he finds himself falling for the prince's sister, Princess Wonseong.

Splash Splash Love is one of those K-dramas that combine time travel with romance . In the television series, a high-school student gets transported to 15th-century Korea. She soon meets the young king of the kingdom who wants to learn more about mathematics. Thankfully, the heroine of the show is a patient teacher who is more than willing to tutor the King.

Splash Splash Love is a quick and easy watch as it is one of the shortest K-dramas out there, with only two episodes. This is part of why the show has near-perfect pacing and ranks among the best time travel K-dramas. It was originally broadcast as a 10-part webseries on Naver TV Cast. Its popularity led to it being edited into two hour-long episodes, so binging it is really like watching a movie.

12 Rooftop Prince

Released in 2012, rooftop prince (2012).

Rooftop Prince is a South Korean television series that tells the story of Crown Prince Lee Gak, who travels from the Joseon Dynasty to modern-day Seoul in search of his missing bride. With the help of Park-ha, a young woman who resembles his lost love, he navigates the complexities of contemporary life while trying to uncover the truth behind his bride's disappearance.

Rooftop Prince has a lot of storylines to process, but they're well worth it. The titular protagonist is a prince who wakes up in present-day 2012, even though he's actually from the Korean Joseon dynasty/era . The crown prince and his two confidants find themselves on the rooftop of Park-ha's (Han Ji-min) home. After the prince realizes he's time-traveled 300 years into the future, he also sees the long-lost sister of Park-ha - who is the spitting image of his late wife who drowned.

The prince is convinced he will find the answers to his past in 2012 and poses as the grandson of a powerful CEO, who in reality was killed by another family member. Both the characters of the past and the characters of the present have intense backstories and the series leans into the soap-opera-like aspects of those. It works in the show's favor, as the series has become even more popular outside of Korea than in its home. It is most popular in Japan and China.

K-dramas like Love & Leashes are full of passion and romance, but what are some other similarly hot and steamy K-drama series?

11 The King: Eternal Monarch

Released in 2020, the king: eternal monarch (2020).

The King: Eternal Monarch is a fantasy romance drama that tells the story of Emperor Lee Gon, who discovers a mysterious portal that leads him to a parallel universe. He meets a detective named Jung Tae-eul, and together, they navigate between their two worlds, uncovering secrets and conspiracies that threaten the stability of both kingdoms.

Not only does The King: Eternal Monarch have a phenomenal female lead in Jeong Tae-eul (Kim Go-eun), but it's also full of riveting action, features a unique story of parallel worlds, and is also one of the unique time travel K-Dramas available on Netflix. In the show, there are two co-existing realities: present-day South Korea and the Kingdom of Corea.

The current king of Corea witnessed his father's murder as a child at the hands of his uncle. When he discovers a doorway to the parallel world and present-day South Korea, he also discovers that his uncle has been traveling between the two worlds and trying to raise his own army. The king must stop his uncle, but along the way, he learns the truth about the mysterious figure who once saved his life and finds he must travel to a moment in the past. The series explores the idea of a single moment in time altering someone's whole reality.

10 Queen In-Hyun's Man

Queen in-hyun's man (2012).

Queen In-Hyun's Man is a 2012 South Korean television series that tells the story of Kim Boong-do, a dignified and charismatic nobleman, who travels through time from the 17th century to the present day, where he meets and falls in love with actress Choi Hee-jin.

A Joseon Dynasty scholar meets an aspiring actress in the year 2012 in the political and romantic Korean drama , Queen In-Hyun's Man, one of the best time travel K-dramas. In 1694, a noble-born scholar is the only survivor after his family was murdered, but there's a bigger story at play while he supports the reinstatement of the deposed queen and there's a conspiracy involving a royal concubine. Due to a magical talisman, he time travels 300 years into the future and meets an actress who he has a connection with.

What makes the rom-com elements of the scholar from the past meeting the actress from the future is that the actress, so far, is not a household name. instead, her big break is about to be playing Queen In-Hyun, the very woman the scholar is a supporter of.

Faith (2012)

Faith is a South Korean television drama that aired in 2012, starring Lee Min-ho as Choi Young, a skilled warrior, and Kim Hee-sun as Yoo Eun-soo, a plastic surgeon who travels back in time to the Goryeo era. The story follows their love story amidst the political turmoil of the time.

The time travel K-drama Faith follows the story of a plastic surgeon who gets transported to 14th-century Goryeo. She soon learns that a royal guard warrior was the reason why she was brought back more than 600 years into the past. The royal guard begs the plastic surgeon to help their injured queen. However, the plastic surgeon has actually caught feelings for her kidnapper.

Faith is considered one of the better time travel and fantasy-themed romance K-dramas thanks to the stellar performances of the actors, as well as the detailed story that shines a light on Korean history and mythology. It's also got a multi-layered title. While the literal translation of the title is "faith" as in "belief in justice," the Hanja lettering (Chinese letters used to write Korean) actually means "divine doctor," allowing the audience to understand that both terms are important to the long-term storyline of the show.

8 Nine: Nine Time Travels

Released in 2013, nine: nine time travels (2013).

Nine: Nine Time Travels is a South Korean television series that follows the story of Park Sun-woo, a man who discovers a way to travel through time and sets out to prevent a family tragedy from occurring.

In the time travel K-drama Nine: Nine Time Travels , Park Sun-woo (Lee Jin-wook) discovers nine incense sticks that could take him back 20 years in time. He uses his time in the past to save his family, who have been victims of a terrible tragedy. However, he needs to be extra careful when he goes back in time, as he can only do it nine times - the twist that makes Nine: Nine one of the best time travel K-dramas. Park soon finds out that whatever he changes in the past also resonates and affects his present life.

The K-drama was nominated for several awards across Korea for its great cast and romantic storyline, including snagging nominations at the Korean Drama Awards and the Baeksang Arts Awards. It also became popular outside of Korea, broadcast on television in China, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Thailand.

The Smile will definitely Leave Your Eyes with these shocking and heartbreaking K-Drama plot twists.

7 Go Back Couple

Go back couple (2017).

Go Back Couple is a South Korean television series that explores the lives of a married couple, Choi Ban-do and Ma Jin-joo, who are struggling to balance their careers and relationship. After 18 years of marriage, they are suddenly transported back in time to their college days, giving them a chance to re-evaluate their life choices and relationships.

Inspired by a webtoon called Do It One More Time , Go Back Couple (also simply called Go Back in some regions) is a Korean miniseries where a couple wishes that they never met each other. They have both become unhappy and exhausted with their marriage and wish they could have changed their unhappiness at the seeming source of all of their problems - meeting each other. The couple soon finds that they've reverted to their 20-year-old selves, faced with trying to make decisions that will make their future selves happy and satisfied.

The show features plenty of funny and heartwarming moments that will make viewers swoon — and an ending that will surely tug at the heartstrings of every long-time K-drama viewer. After its broadcast, the series was nominated for a slew of KBS Drama Awards, picking up two, one for Best Couple for the lead actors in Son Ho-jun and Jang Na-ra, and Excellence Award for Actress in a Miniseries for Jan Na-ra.

6 Chicago Typewriter

Chicago typewriter (2017).

Chicago Typewriter follows the lives of three individuals: Han Se-joo, a talented writer; Jeon Seol, a passionate fan; and Yoo Jin-oh, a mysterious ghostwriter, who become entwined as they navigate their complex relationships and uncover the mysteries of their pasts.

Out of the most compelling and best time travel K-dramas (as well as general fantasy K-Dramas ), Chicago Typewriter is one of the few that's about reincarnation rather than strictly about traveling through time. Three resistance fighters from the 1930s Japanese occupation of Korea find themselves in a new time period, but not because of mysterious scientific machines or magical objects. Instead, the three are reincarnated as a writer, a fan, and a ghostwriter.

Switching between the 1930s and the 21st century, these three characters start to see parallels between both time periods. As they start to uncover the truth behind their pasts, they worry about how it might affect their present. K-drama fans tired of the same old romantic comedy fare will love the truly unique story elements of Chicago Typewriter. The series was also filmed on location around Seoul, South Korea, so fans will enjoy picking out the real sites.

Dubbed the ‘Taylor Swift of K-pop,’ IU caps first world tour in L.A.

K-pop singer IU performs onstage.

“How many minutes do we have left?” IU urgently called offstage to her staff.

Los Angeles was the last stop of her first world tour and she was determined to grant as many song requests from fans as she could before her time in the Kia Forum ran out.

IU, whose real name is Lee Ji-eun, may not be a household name in America just yet, but the K-pop singer is an icon in South Korea. Dubbed the nation’s little sister (Korea’s version of “America’s sweetheart”), she debuted when she was just 15 and climbed her way to the top of not only Korea’s music industry but its film industry as a respected actress, with hit dramas including “My Mister” and “Hotel del Luna.” Now 31, she is as popular as ever. Multiple fans attending the concert Friday night noted the longevity of her career and her smart songwriting, with several calling her the Taylor Swift of K-pop.

“She’s the national pop queen,” Hannah Park, 27, said.

Others drew parallels to Ariana Grande and Beyoncé, alluding to IU’s powerful vocals and dominance as a solo female artist in K-pop. Some said there is just no equivalent.

“It’s hard to draw a comparison,” Joshua Misa, 27, said.

IU’s HEREH World Tour, which kicked off in March in her hometown of Seoul, stopped in 16 other cities including Hong Kong, London and Atlanta. Its final stop was full of odes to L.A., where she performed her hit song “Celebrity” as more than 10,000 fans held up pink banners that read, “In the city of stars, you’re our celebrity.”

She opened the concert with her song “Holssi” from her latest album, “The Winning,” noting that the music video was filmed in L.A. and that the child back-up dancers were L.A. natives. She went on to perform other hits like “BBIBBI,” “eight” and “Shopper,” whose music video was also filmed in L.A. At the end of some songs, she would make the L.A. hand sign as the crowd roared.

LOS ANGELES, CA - JULY 26: Taemin at the KCON music festival at the Convention Center in Los Angeles, CA. Photographed on Friday, July 26, 2024. (Myung J. Chun / Los Angeles Times)

Boundary-pushing K-pop superstar Taemin is ‘grateful but still hungry’ to take the genre to greater heights

Her dreamy but powerful vocals filled the Forum as she sang some of her signature ballads including “Obliviate,” “Through the Night,” and her latest single “Love Wins All,” earning extra cheers from fans as scenes from the music video featuring BTS’ V were projected onto the screen.

In between sets, the K-pop star poured heartfelt words of gratitude and awe at the love she has received on tour, switching between English and Korean. Leading up to the tour, she said she had sleepless nights, worried about whether she could stay healthy enough to complete all the scheduled shows.

IU wears a dress and beams from the stage.

“There wasn’t a single show where I didn’t feel immense happiness as I walked off the stage,” she said in English from a script she had written, memorized and practiced repeatedly so she could get the words just right. “Every single show and city was so precious. Fans always love me purely and always makes me want to improve my shortcomings.”

At times, she seemed lost for words and just bowed to the audience in respect and gratitude.

But language never seemed to be a barrier for the K-pop star and her global fans. Even when the crowd stumbled through the verses to “Celebrity” as they called her back to the stage for an encore, she found it endearing and showered fans with endless praise.

The two-and-a-half-hour show ended with a half-hour encore, during which IU scanned the crowd for fan-made signs of songs they wanted to hear. She sang a string of shortened versions of requested songs including “Hold my Hand,” “LILAC,” and the song that propelled her to stardom in 2010: “Good Day.”

“Hurry up, what’s the next song before they kick me off the stage?” IU said half-jokingly, constantly checking the time.

It’s fair to say she soaked in every last moment.
