Robert Plant and Alison Krauss on Their 2024 Tour, ‘Stairway to Heaven,’ Retirement, and Much More

  • By Brian Hiatt

Brian Hiatt

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss aren’t ready to stop singing together just yet. “We’ve been doing this on and off since 2007,” says Krauss, “and it’s just gotten better every time we’ve gotten together.” So after touring for the past two years behind their second collaborative album, 2021’s Raise the Roof , they’re adding 28 tour dates this year, beginning in June. Krauss and Plant gave Rolling Stone for their only interview about the new tour, explaining why they just can’t quit each other, discussing future plans, breaking down their set list, and much more. Some highlights follow, and you can hear the entire conversation on the latest episode of our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast — go  here  for the podcast provider of your choice, listen on  Apple Podcasts  or  Spotify , or just press play below.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Alison Krauss:  It’s felt great. I’m really glad that we’ve been able to revisit this as many times as we have. The band has more room, and I get a little more consistency with what’s happening when it’s time for me to jump in and sing harmony. And I thought, “Oh, it’ll be too long in between …” But it’s amazing how quickly the months go by before we go out again. I’m really looking forward to doing it again.

Alison, when you mentioned a little more consistency, I know that was always kind of an issue. Robert sings with a lot of freedom and improvisation, so it was always a challenge to harmonize. How are those things changing to make it easier? Krauss: Oh, I don’t know if they’re changing [laughs] . It’s just that I can catch a little bit more of his phrasing when he looks my way.  He’s always very funny, because he’s like, “Don’t worry about it!” He goes, “It’s the same. It’s the same every time.” And i’m like, “It’s never the same!” So, you know, I gotta hang on for dear life.

Plant: I don’t notice any of that!

Of course not. Krauss: [Laughs] He doesn’t notice.

I’ve learned a lot, and those moments are hair-raising. It’s great to be learning and be contrite and humble and come into your dressing room bowing and saying “Can you just explain the last harmony to me again?”

Krauss: It’s not quite like that!

Watch Roger Daltrey Play 'Baba O'Riley' With Eddie Vedder, Robert Plant at Royal Albert Hall

Bob dylan and willie nelson unite for epic 'outlaw' summer tour, robert plant squashes his 16-year beef with ‘stairway to heaven’.

What have the two of you both been up to since July, when the last dates ended? Krauss: I’ve been in the studio recording. And that’s a tedious process. Plant: I’ve got a group of friends that I play with over here a little bit from time to time. I’ve also been going through all that stuff that I never released and never quite got finished. And getting excited about it. Going, “Wow. What am I going to do with that?” It’s the idioms, the visitation, the places that I’ve been musically which were not complete are just mind-boggling, and they’re a little bit overwhelming.

Are you writing new songs as well, Robert? Plant: I’ve got a Tascam digital recorder, and I sing, and I put the vocals through a guitar pedal, and then I record them on that over there, and it sounds great. Why bother to go to the studio? But I can’t find words. This is a very difficult time to try and wax lyrical out there.

I love that. Alison, in your genre, it’s taken for granted that people will stay onstage until, basically, they can’t stand up anymore, even beyond. You’re quite young still, but I’m sure that you’ve always taken it for granted that you’re going to be doing this if you can when you’re 80 or 90. Krauss: You never know how you’re going to feel, and you never know when you’re going to feel different. With this music, I think so many people started so young, and they toured so much. It’s all they knew. It’s hard to say, what I’m going to feel when when I get older.

Robert, there’s people of your generation retiring. Do you think about retirement? You seem to love being on the road, so do you want to just push it as long as you can push it? Plant: The camaraderie, the things that you share up there, and the frailties that you know you’re carrying with you quietly, the exposure of yourself to yourself, is something that I would hate to say goodbye to. I can’t just sit back. Out there in the real world, people say to me, “What about the book?” And I say, “Are you kidding? What? This is spectacular. Why think about it twice?” This is today. What happened in Schenectady in 1969 is another story. And for me, the continuum must keep going. Today, I was pulling all my lyric books out and going, “Gotta get the groove back. I’ve got something to say.” So yeah, I’m going to keep going — as long as they’ve got effects machines that make me sound good [laughs] . Well, it worked for Elvis! Listen to the compression on his voice on some of those big ballads in ’57.

Robert, you sang “Stairway to Heaven” for the first time in many years at a charity event last year. What did that feel like? Plant: It was cathartic. People go, “Oh, that’s good. He never was going to do that.” But I didn’t really do it! I just blurted it out. ‘Cause it’s such an important song to me for where I was at the time and where I was with Jimmy and with John and Bonzo. So on that night, it was what it was. It was a trial by fire, but I felt better at the end than at the beginning.

Finally, you have these 30 or so dates, and you have your own careers. What are your hopes for the future of this collaboration? Plant: I really hope that we pull a cat out of the bag again.

Krauss: We have had such a great time making those records and touring that I’d love to see it happen again, too. I feel like we’ve made something new when we recorded together. The whole thing has been a surprise for me. And I know it was for Robert too, although he seems to have more bravery in this department.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss will be on tour together for the first time in 13 years next summer when they team up for a joint outing in the U.S. and Europe behind a new album that comes out today, “Raise the Roof.”

The tour isn’t an extensive one, at least as currently announced. In America, Plant and Krauss are due to only play 10 dates, all in the eastern U.S., Midwest or South. Their European trek is even shorter, consisting of eight dates.

Three of the 10 U.S. dates are in New York state, with the tour scheduled to kick off in Canandaigua, NY on June 1 and proceed to Saratoga Springs and Forest Hills Stadium in Queens. From there, there are shows in cities including Chicago, Philadelphia and Indianapolis before the U.S. leg wraps up just over two weeks later at Atlanta’s Cadence Bank Amphitheatre.

Ten days after that, Plant and Krauss commence the European leg in London at BST Hyde Park on June 26, wrapping up in Berlin on July 20.

Popular on Variety

Tickets for the U.S. go on sale to the general public Dec. 3, following some presales on Nov. 29. For the European dates, the presales begin Nov. 24 and the general sale commences Nov. 26.

Demand will certainly succeed supply at these outings, and there’s no word on whether dates in other areas may be added later. But even after their previous album, the Grammy-winning “Raising Sand,” came out in 2007, tour dates didn’t come in huge abundance, topping out at fewer than 50 shows.

Plant and Krauss did almost all of their previous touring as a duo over a period of six months in 2008, followed by a handful of European dates in 2009. They did subsequently perform together for a few songs in 2015 as part of a tribute to the blues legend Lead Belly at the Kennedy Center.

The new “Raise the Roof,” on Rounder Records, has been hailed as a worthy follow-up to “Raising Sand,” which won Grammys for album and record of the year, among other plaudits, at the Grammys. Both albums were produced by T Bone Burnett, who joined the band on the 2008 tour.

“The album sounds warm, mystical and at times slightly foreboding, like an old friend you’re glad to see again who’s still a little mysterious,” wrote Variety in a November profile of the duo. Read that interview here .

The pair will appear on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” tonight and “CBS Saturday Morning” tomorrow morning.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss Announce Expanded Tour Dates

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss have announced an extended second leg of their 2022 tour, which will keep the pair on the road through September.

In total, Plant and Krauss have added 13 new dates to their itinerary, including stops at such famous venues as Red Rocks in Colorado, Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre and Moody Amphitheater in Austin. These shows are in addition to their previously announced trek, which kicks off June 3 and includes a set at the Bonnaroo music festival. A complete list of tour dates can be found below.

The summer trek will mark Plant and Krauss’ first tour together in more than a decade. The two famously joined forces for 2007’s Raising Sand , an album that won wide acclaim and earned five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.

Raising Sand ’s popularity led Plant and Krauss to tour together throughout 2008 (and a few dates in 2009). The two last shared the stage in 2015, when they headlined a special event at the Kennedy Center honoring the legacy of Lead Belly.

Plant and Krauss released their second collaborative album, Raise the Roof , last November. Like Raising Sand , it features the duo reinterpreting classic folk and Americana tracks.

“There was a little bit of trepidation on my part,” Plant previously admitted regarding a second LP with Krauss. “I wasn’t sure whether we could reinvoke what we had. But it was very short-lived, that question of whether or not it was real. It was like, I bow to her and she curtsies to me, and we see what we can do.”

First let me say, I love Robert Plant. I think he’s absolutely brilliant and I don’t think there are any artists today that sing in a range as wide or sing as passionately as he does. To this day, I still think that the way Robert Plant sings, with such raw, unfiltered emotion, void of vocal control or fear, is unlike anyone else I’ve ever heard before.

The most amazing part about seeing Robert Plant live, besides his uninhabited talent and stage presence, is that watching him is like getting to see a little piece of music history right before your eyes. It’s amazing to know you’re experiencing something that people got to experience in the seventies and eighties when the world, and the music industry, was a much different place. This definitely adds another layer to his live performances, making them all the more incredible.

It’s amazing that a musician who has been around for so long still manages to be consistently creative and innovative, and his voice is even almost as strong as it was on Led Zeppelin’s earliest albums. He’s had many different projects since Led Zeppelin, and though none have been nearly as popular, they are all unique and interesting in their own right.

Plant’s show at the Glastonbury Festival this year was packed with the most positive of vibes, and the audience couldn’t get enough of him, even screaming with approval during some of the more mellow guitar solos. The man definitely still has it, and I hope he never stops performing.

Robert Plant Rumored To Be Working on New Project Featuring Reimagined Versions of Led Zeppelin Songs

F ounding Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant is working on a recording project that will feature one or more updated versions of songs by his old band, the LedZepNews fan site reports.

According to the website, the news was shared by multiple people who are working on the project in now-deleted social media posts.

[Buy Robert Plant Concert Tickets]

Singer and writer Antonella Gambotto-Burke told LedZepNews that Plant recently spent a day at the Magic Garden Recording Studio in Wolverhampton, U.K., and during that time he worked on a new rendition of a Led Zeppelin song.

“While the project is currently top secret, it involves a Led Zeppelin song,” Gambotto-Burke told the website. “Spending time with Robert has been such a privilege.”

She also noted, “The thing that surprised me most was the intense magic he brings with him. It literally fills the room. Spiritually speaking, he’s a giant, and the music is, of course, untouchable. I’m still flying!”

Producer Gavin Monaghan’s Deleted Post About the Plant Session

LedZepNews reports that the session was overseen by producer Gavin Monaghan, a two-time Producer of the Year winner at the Birmingham Music Awards and owner of Magic Garden studio.

A now-deleted Instagram post from Monaghan appeared to reveal that Plant’s new project was connected with Wolves Records, a label launched in 2021 by the Wolverhampton Wanderers soccer club. Plant has been a vice president of the club since 2009.

“Absolute pleasure to be working with Robert Plant and Wolves Records at Magic Garden Recording Studio again,” the post read, according to LedZepNews. “And the thrill of a lifetime to be reimagining some classic cuts from Led Zeppelin.”

Engineer Liam Radburn’s Deleted Post About the Plant Session

Liam Radburn, an engineer at Magic Garden studio posted a similar message on his Instagram site that also has been deleted, the fan site reported.

“An absolute honour to work on reimagined versions of classic Led Zeppelin songs with Robert Plant for Wolves at Magic Garden Recording Studio,” Radburn reportedly posted.

Gambotto-Burke’s Deleted Post About the Plant Session

Meanwhile, Gambotto-Burke also wrote about Plant’s recording session in a now-deleted Facebook post.

“In keeping with the rollercoaster that is 2024: hanging out for the day with Robert Plant in the studio,” Gambotto-Burke wrote, according to LedZepNews. “Robert specifically asked to work with Magic Garden Recording Studio, making the brilliant Gavin one of a handful of living producers who has had the honour of working on a Led Zeppelin track. He is, hands down, the most grounded rock star I’ve ever met.”

LedZepNews also posted a photo of Plant with Monaghan and Gambotto-Burke that was taken from her Facebook page. The pic apparently is no longer on Gambotto-Burke’s Facebook page.

More About Monaghan and Gambotto-Burke

Monaghan and Gambotto-Burke are romantic and creative partners who make up the musical duo of Mama feat. Antonella.

Monaghan previously worked with Plant when the Led Zeppelin legend contributed vocals to a track on Wolverhampton-based singer/songwriter Scott Matthews’ 2009 album Elsewhere. That project also was recorded at Magic Garden studio.

Plant’s 2024 Tour Dates

Plant has a variety of upcoming 2024 tour dates on his schedule. He will be finishing up a spring U.K. tour with his folk project Saving Grace over the next several days. Plant then will launch a U.S. headlining tour with acclaimed folk/bluegrass artist Alison Krauss that’s mapped out from June 6 to June 19.

On June 21, Plant and Krauss will join Willie Nelson’s Outlaw Music Festival Tour for a series of stateside performances running through July 7.

In late July, Plant will play a few more U.K. shows with Saving Grace. He then will team up with Krauss again for late-summer North American tour leg running from August 8 to September 21.

Plant and Saving Grave will hit the road once again in October for a series of show in Italy.
