Planning a short trip from Kochi? Try Pooyamkutty, the blissful tourist hotspot

 alt=

The ever-enchanting Pooyamkutty, which was picturized as the home town of the protagonist of Mohanlal-starrer blockbuster Malayalam movie ‘Pulimurugan’, is just a 90-minute drive from the Kochi city.

This small town in the Ernakulam district is the ideal quick getaway to be far away from the madding crowd and get rejuvenated. The old Munnar-Aluva road used to cut through Pooyamkutty, which boasts of thick forest and roaming elephants.

Swim with caution If you want to get a feel of the wilderness, take a dip in the tranquil river and see the elephants move around with measured steps, then stay at the budget homestay near the old Munnar-Aluva royal pathway. The stunning cascade Kandanpara is at a walking distance from the homestay.

Pooyamkutty is popular among travellers because of its rivers with crystal clear cool water, mammoth trees with perfect canopies and thick reed bamboo forest.

The main attraction of Pooyamkutty is that the tourists can swim in the river as the water body is shallow in many areas. But one shouldn’t throw caution to wind while taking a dip in the river. It is noteworthy that Pooyamkutty is the perfect destination if you want a break from the hustle and bustle of the city life for a day or two.

Straight out of a painting In the Malayalam flick ‘Pulimurugan’, there is a scene in which the main character, essayed by Mohanlal, speeds through Chappath in Pooyamkutty in a lorry. Many shots in another Mohanlal-starrer film ‘Shikkar’ were also canned at the bamboo forest of this captivating place. The charming Manikandanchal is on the other side of the bridge. The forest area with majestic trees looks like it is out of an exquisite painting and the lush green meadows look impressive, to say the least. A drive through this mesmerizing place would be a dream come true for many travellers.

A safe retreat The homestay near the old Munnar-Aluva road is a safe cocoon to curl up and enjoy the magical effect of wildlife. The entire facility could be taken on rent for a family get-together or social gathering. It is safe to stay at the homestay as the electric fence would keep the wild animals at bay. The guests can also stay put in top floor rooms that offer great view.

You can reach the Kandanpara falls from the homestay after walking for a while through the narrow forest pathway. The river on which the waterfall is located flows calmly and you would be able to see, if you are lucky, elephants in areas above the cascade. What makes the place unique is that one could have a breath of fresh air, walk through the forest paths and spend quality time with family members or friends. Moreover, you would be busy clicking engrossing pictures of birds of all hues if you have quality camera and lens. Another interesting fact is that you can drive your vehicle through the forest pathways like a wildlife safari ride.

While stepping into the river water, be careful and listen to the instructions given by the local residents as they know the danger lurking in the river. Don’t go deep into the forest as the chances of coming across wild elephants are pretty high. While returning from Pooyamkutty, you can visit the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary and Bhoothathankettu.

Pooyamkutty is 62km (roughly 90-minute drive) from Aluva in Ernakulam district. For more details about the homestay, contact: 9745816360.

Located near Pooyamkutty in Kothamangalam Thaluk of Ernakulam district, Kerala, this stunning waterfall is considered the highest in the region. It’s nestled in the Karinthiri River, a tributary of the mighty Periyar River .

The trek to this magical cascade will lead you through a breathtaking landscape of quaint tribal settlements and their rustic huts. With over 100 tribal families calling this lush forest home, they have to trek almost 20 kilometers through the dense jungle just to reach the main road.

The Critical Elephant Corridor

The Pooyamkutty forest is not just home to the stunning Pindimedu Waterfall but also serves as a critical elephant corridor. With the highest population of elephants in Kerala, the forest connects the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary and Eravikulam National Park , making it a significant migration route for these majestic creatures. The bamboo forests in the area provide a perfect habitat for these gentle giants, making it an important site for wildlife conservation.

A Captivating Shooting Location

It’s no surprise that the makers of the Malayalam blockbuster, Pulimurugan, featuring Mohanlal, chose Pindimedu Waterfall as one of their shooting locations. And rightly so! A trip to this captivating waterfall will leave you spellbound by the sheer magnificence of nature. As you take in the tranquil beauty of your surroundings, you’ll feel a profound connection with nature, leaving you in awe of the wonder that abounds all around us.

The Abandoned Hydroelectric Project

Pooyamkutty was once home to an ambitious hydroelectric project by the Kerala State Electricity Board, with an estimated cost of INR 250 crore. The project aimed to construct a hydroelectric power station at the magnificent Pindimedu waterfall, with a capacity of 1000 megawatts, similar to the impressive Idukki Dam . However, despite its potential to generate significant power, the project had to be abandoned in the 1990s due to environmental concerns and lack of clearance.

After arriving at Pooyamkutty, brace yourself for an exhilarating 2-3 hour trek to reach the waterfall. Although the trail is not particularly challenging, it can get muddy and slippery during the rainy season.

You’ll be crossing several streams and bridges on your journey, and you’ll also have the opportunity to spot some incredible wildlife and take in the breathtaking scenery around you. The trek is more than worth it to bask in the beauty of Pindimedu Waterfalls.

Plan Your Visit to Pindimedu Waterfalls

If you are planning to visit this place, make sure you go during the dry season (November to March), as the road and the trek can be very difficult during the monsoon (June to September). Also, make sure you respect the environment and do not litter or harm any plants or animals. Pindimedu Waterfalls is a natural wonder that deserves to be preserved and enjoyed by everyone.

Remember to bring your own food and water, as there are no nearby shops or facilities. Camping and overnight stays are permitted with prior permission from the forest department, but you must follow their rules and bring your own camping gear. Experience the beauty of the night sky and the sounds of the forest if you decide to camp.

Obtaining Permission to Visit Pindimedu Waterfalls

Access to the stunning Pindimedu waterfall is restricted to the general public due to its location deep inside the Pooyamkutty Forest and the presence of dangerous manholes in large rocks. However, adventure seekers who want to explore this natural wonder can obtain trekking permission from the Malayattur Divisional Forest Office located in Perumbavoor.

Trekking enthusiasts are required to submit a photocopy of their identity card at the DFO office to obtain the necessary permit. The contact number of the Malayattur Divisional Forest Office is 04842649052 and the contact number for Kuttampuzha Range is 8547604260. With the proper authorization, trekkers can embark on a thrilling journey through the forest and witness the mesmerizing beauty of the Pindimedu waterfalls.

Pooyamkutty to mamalakandam- a beautiful drive.

pooyamkutty tourist places

After a satiating breakfast at Kothamangalam, we left behind the hustle of the small towns and meandered our way past rubber plantations to Pooyamkutty, with the river, Periyar popping up intermittently. While the main intention was to drive through the lush greenery of Mamalakandam, we decided to explore a few other places as well enroute to the final destination.

Kuttampuzha was the first pit stop, where we took a short detour to get to Anakkayam Beach. From where the road ended, a narrow pathway along the Periyar River led us to the beach. A secluded place with hardly any visitors, we were welcomed by serenity and scenic frames. While technically this isn’t a beach, but a river bank with sand. A large tree with its branches sprawling like tentacles made a beautiful frame against the tranquil waters and lush greenery behind. A lone fisherman, probably a local having some moments of solitude, was the only human presence in the vicinity. After loitering around for a while, soaking in the serenity on offer, we walked back.

pooyamkutty tourist places

Enroute to Pooyamkutty, we stopped by at Blavana ferry, to watch a jeep loaded with rice and other daily necessities make its way across the river atop 2 tied up canoes. In today’s times, when modern technology and developments have reached every corner of the globe, this rudimentary means of transportation was quite captivating. I was told by the locals that the supplies were carried to the tribal colony across the river. As the jeep sailed its way to the other bank, we left for Pooyamkutty, a couple of kilometers away.

pooyamkutty tourist places

Pooyamkutty gained prominence after a couple of Malayalam movies were shot here. While there isn’t much to explore here, the aerial view of the gushing Pooyamkutty River, a tributary of Periyar River, under the bridge and the lush green surroundings, offers a beautiful frame. A winding road took me down to the bridge, which further leads to Manikandanchal, where there are tribal colonies. I crossed the bridge, gazed at the beautiful waters and then walked up to the magnificent huge trees lined up on either side of the road. Looking up at them, I strolled around for a while, and then returned back, as visitors aren’t allowed beyond this.

pooyamkutty tourist places

Drove back to the tiny hamlet of Pooyamkutty, and some short eats later, headed to Mamalakandam. The road became narrow, the lush greenery turned dense and apart from the rumbling of the car, it was only the cricket’s sound that could be heard. The road wound its way through dense greenery, with steep slopes, dips and wonderful views on offer. We took a pit stop in the middle of nowhere, to admire the beauty of nature. The leaves swayed to the swooshing breeze, and a waterfall could be heard at a distance. A lone tree house (more like an ‘erumaadam’) stood tall near to where we stopped, but had no access to get up there.

pooyamkutty tourist places

As more vehicles made pit stops, we drove further down, and slowly, the forest gave way to tiny clearings and settlements of Mamalakandam. A small pathway from the road led us inside, and we walked the path listening to the sound of gurgling waters in search of Urulikuzhi Waterfalls. After searching for a bit, we saw a large stream flowing over flat rocks and making its way further down. The dips in the rocks resembles like an ’uruli’ (a large vessel), and that’s how the place gets its name, Urulikkuzhi Waterfalls. The place reminded me of Paniyeli Poru , but there weren’t any whirlpools or under currents here. We sat by the bank on the large open rock and enjoyed some moments of silence before getting back on the main road.

pooyamkutty tourist places

Govt. High School, Mamalakandam was where we headed next. This probably is one of the most picturesque schools in Kerala, with a magnificent backdrop of a hill and Elamplassery Waterfalls gushing down it. The frame is so captivating that it made me wonder how students are able to concentrate in their classes, when the nature outside is absolutely surreal.

pooyamkutty tourist places

On the way back to Kochi, we stopped by at the gushing Valara Waterfalls and the stunning  Cheeyappara Waterfalls . The sign board near the waterfalls had Munnar written on it, but I was content with the beautiful drive between Pooyamkutty and Mamalakandam, and the lovely pit stops we had. The drive through the forest and chasing the Periyar River was a wonderful experience.

Pooyamkutty is 78 km from Kochi, and it is ideal to visit in your own vehicle. There are buses from Kochi and Muvattupuzha to Pooyamkutty, but is not frequent. The nearest major town in Kothamangalam. The route from Pooyamkutty to Mamalakandam does not have public services, except for one KSRTC bus in a day.

Food and Accommodation:

There are small eateries near Pooyamkutty Bridge and at Mamalakandam. The region also has a few homestays.

Walking through Mahagony’s thick forest will take 15-20 minutes, and Teak to reach the river. One must be very careful when stepping into the river as there are strong undercurrents in certain areas. One can also see monkeys moving through the trees or climbing up. The deep forest and river are the filmmaker’s favorite locations.

Illithode is a tourist eco-spot near the Church of Malayattoor. Periyar is the principal attraction that flows through the trees. That place is loved by filmmakers. These roots also act as pillars inside the caves.

Still, in good condition, these caves were believed to be hiding places for the soldiers during the battle period. The pond within the premises is another attraction with its origin behind. The water from this pond is used for drinking purposes by the people around it.

Away from the city’s rushes, this place can be accessed by private vehicles. The best time to visit this place is the monsoon season. These cool caves are a perfect place to plan a one day trip. One must never miss this unknown tourist spot near Kochi.

One must come and visit and soak up the soil, the wind and the rivers in its rawness, to know the authentic feel. It is a must-see place in Kochi.

Kuttampuzha is located approximately 30 km from Cochin airport. While railway station Aluva is 40 km away.
