Hop aboard the Carnival Radiance for a short but fun-filled cruise weekend.

Whether you're short on vacation days or you only have a long weekend to spare, three-night cruises offer a fun and affordable way to get a change of scenery. Carnival Freedom's next two cruises from Port Canaveral canceled after exhaust funnel fire

A fire in the exhaust funnel of the Carnival Freedom this weekend has disrupted a cruise of the Port Canaveral-based ship for the second time in less than two years — and will mean that the ship's next two cruises are canceled.

Damage to the funnel will require the cancellation of Carnival's next two cruises out of Port Canaveral, which were scheduled to depart Monday and Friday.

Thousands of passengers with scheduled cruises will be affected by the canceled cruises during a busy spring break period for Carnival and other cruise lines.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Carnival initially had said it expected no changes in its upcoming cruises, but on Sunday afternoon said the cancellations would be required.

"Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought, and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," according to a statement issued by Matt Lupoli, Carnival Cruise Line's senior manager of public relations. "The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs."

Carnival said it made the decision after "our technical team completed a thorough assessment" during the ship’s visit Sunday to Freeport in the Bahamas.

In the statement, Carnival said: "We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation. We are providing all guests on both canceled cruises a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit, so they can come back and enjoy a future cruise with us. We also greatly appreciate the terrific guests who are currently sailing with us, for their outstanding cooperation and support."

In a Facebook post, Carnival's widely followed brand ambassador, John Heald, conceded that many people who booked one of the canceled cruises are "feeling very disappointed," and he apologized for the turn of events.

But, Heald added that he wanted to assure affected passengers that, "when you rebook, using your full refund and your 100% future cruise credit, that the crew will be standing by to give you all the fun you deserve."

More than 500 people responded to the post, with many saying they thought Carnival was generous with the compensation offer. But some people who said they were on the cruise that experienced the fire said they thought Carnival should have done more for the people who were on the ship.

Carnival said the fire was confined to the funnel area. The cruise line said there are no reports of injuries to passengers. Two firefighting crew members were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Carnival said that, at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday, the Carnival Freedom reported a fire on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel. The ship was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island, Bahamas, heading to Freeport after a canceled call to the Carnival private island of Princess Cay due to adverse weather.

Details of previous fire: Fire breaks out on Carnival Freedom while Port Canaveral-based ship was in Grand Turk

"The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames," an earlier Carnival statement said. "Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike, and that is being investigated, but cannot yet be confirmed."

By 5:20 p.m. Saturday, the fire was extinguished.

Carnival said the ship's captain made multiple announcements to passengers and crew, and advised all but essential safety personnel to stay away from balconies and all open decks.

The port-side portion of the funnel had fallen onto Deck 10, and the firefighting response put out any flames.

The U.S. Coast Guard has been notified of the fire, and Carnival activated its incident response team to support the ship’s crew.

Carnival said there were no other operational issues with the ship’s systems, and the ship, which was on a four-night cruise, was visiting Freeport on Sunday.

The Freedom sailed into the channel at Port Canaveral around 7:30 a.m. Monday, and docked at Cruise Terminal 6, letting off the passengers who were on the cruise. Carnival then awaited a Coast Guard inspection of the ship before it could be cleared to leave Port Canaveral for the Freeport shipyard for repairs. The ship left the port about 6:20 p.m.

A cruise ship funnel generally serves as a smokestack to lift emissions above the deck, thus away from passengers and crew.

On Saturday evening, "Carnival Freedom guests enjoyed the Elegant Night dinner as planned, and, with the exception of the open decks, all areas of the ship are fully functioning," Carnival said in its statement.

The sailing had about 3,700 passengers onboard. And the two upcoming sailings that were canceled each likely would have had a similar passenger count, because this is a busy time for the cruise industry.

The Carnival Freedom's next voyage was scheduled to depart from Port Canaveral on Monday afternoon on a five-night Eastern Caribbean cruise. That cruise had port-of-call stops scheduled at Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic and at Grand Turk Island in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

But that sailing and a Friday sailing both have been canceled. Friday's five-night sailing also was scheduled to stop at those two ports of call, but in reverse order.

In May 2022, a fire broke out in the funnel area of the Carnival Freedom while it was docked in Grand Turk. Carnival then canceled three scheduled sailings of the Carnival Freedom out of Port Canaveral because of the need to repair the ship's fire damage at a shipyard in Grand Bahama.

More recently, in October 2023, the Carnival Freedom debuted a new iconic winged funnel after returning from a 16-day dry-dock refurbishment in Cadiz, Spain.

The Carnival Freedom came into Port Canaveral at 7:30 Monday morning. The smoke stack of the ship was damaged on its last cruise. Carnival is cancelling the ship’s next two cruises to make repairs.

Livorno cruise port

Region Mediterranean - Black Sea

Local Time 2024-04-30 12:19

Port Livorno cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Livorno, Florence-Pisa, Italy. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Livorno (aka Leghorn) is a port city on the Ligurian Sea, located on the western coast of Italy's Tuscany region. The city has population around 160,000. Port Livorno (locode ITLIV) is Tuscany's principal port as well as the cruise port to four provincial capital cities - Pisa (approx 25 km / 16 mi away), Lucca (~50 km / 30 mi), Firenze/Florence (Tuscany's capital, ~105 km / 65 mi to the east), and Siena (~130 km / 80 mi).

Livorno is the principal cruise port to Florence/Pisa. However, as an alternative port to these popular tourist cities is sometimes used Carrara , from where Florence and Pisa are also accessed via shore excursions/bus tours.

Port Livorno

Livorno is one of the biggest seaports in Italy and the Mediterranean Sea. It serves various types of ships, including cargo carriers, container ships , passenger ships ( ferries and cruise liners). Several heavy-traffic regularly scheduled ferry services are provided by the companies Corsica-Sardinia Ferries (to Golfo Aranci Sardinia  and  Bastia Corsica ), Grimaldi Lines (to Barcelona Spain and Tangier Morocco ), Toremar (to Capraia Island), Moby Lines (to Corsica Island's ports Bastia and Olbia ).

In the end of 2013 was approved a plan for expanding Livorno's passenger port (that serves the ferry and cruise shipping traffic). The project included both piers (Alto Fondale, Calata Orlando), providing 3 more dedicated cruise berths (for vessels with LOA length 300+ m / 984+ ft) and infrastructure development (relocating commercial berths to separate cargo and passenger traffic). The first phase of the port expansion project was completed in 2017. All works are expected to be completed in 2022-23. Until the project's completion, commercial piers will still be used for cruise ship docking.

In November 2015, the Port introduced its shoreside-power supply system (by Nidec Corporation, Japan) providing up to 12 MW electrical power for berthed vessels. The system can support mid-sized cruise liners (with passenger capacity 1000-2000) which usually dock at Sgarallino Pier. The project cost EUR 3,5 million, and was 80% funded by Port Livorno. By 2018, the company Enel (Italy's manufacturer and distributor of electricity and gas) increased the Port's shore-power capacity up to 45 MW, allowing cold ironing services to ships berthed at other piers, as well as capacity to supply larger vessels.

Port's statistical data for season 2016 showed a total of 404 cruise ship calls and 810,000 passengers - about 16% increase over 2015. Season 2017's data showed a 10% decrease (over 2016) in ship visits.

In 2017, the cruise port had scheduled a total of 349 ship calls and handled around 700,000 passengers. Season 2017 featured 6 new cruise vessels (making maiden calls) and 3 ships doing partial turnaround (optional embarkation / disembarkation in Port Livorno):  AIDAperla  (17 calls),  Silver Muse  (5),  Seabourn Encore  (5),  Majestic Princess  (4),  Viking Sky  (2),  Norwegian Joy  (1 call),  MSC Armonia  (17 partial turnarounds),  Arethusa  (16 partial turnarounds),  Hebridean Sky  (1 partial turnaround).

In 2018, the port had scheduled 362 cruise ship calls with around 730,000 passengers. Also in 2018 was completed cruise port's privatization (started in 2017), with MSC Cruises being one of its owners.

There are plans for port developments (budgeted EUR 90 million) for building 4 new berths and terminals with capacity to handle world's largest passenger ships . These plans also include building new facilities providing shore-side power and LNG bunkering. Port's max draft is 15 m (49 ft) and its access channel is wide enough to accommodate big-sized liners.

Starting operations in January 2019, Port Livorno has Mediterranean's largest container  crane ("Model 8 Mobile Harbor Crane"). Built by Konecranes Gottwald lift AGV, the huge crane has max lifting capacity 200 tons, operational radius 12-16 m and hoising heights 12-54 m (below-above quay level). It can serve boxships and ConRo vessels (RoRo-boxship combo transporting TEUs, wheeled cargo and vehicles). The new crane is diesel-electric (power output 1 MW) and can be hooked-up to the terminal's power grid.

In March 2022, Port Livorno contracted for dredging and other works SIDRA (Societa Italiana Dragaggi, subsidiary of DEME Group). Besides dredging, the project includes the construction of Europa Dock, port expansion works (expanding the berthing line with ~3 km / 1,9 mi), coastal defense works (building two new breakwaters - North and South, plus relocating the Meloria breakwater/total breakwater length 6 km / 3,7 mi). Scheduled to start in 2023, works will deepen the Port's access channel (to 17 m / 56 ft), the internal basins draft (to 16 m / 53 ft), and also lay the new breakwaters' foundations. The contract's value is yet to be revealed but, reportedly, it's over EUR 150 million.

Livorno cruise terminal

Currently, the cruise port has 3 berths (close to Pisa International Airport) and can handle 3 large-sized ships at a time. Extra berthing is available at other piers, offering priority docking for passenger shipping vessels. In total, the port can handle 8 cruise ships simultaneously. Smaller-sized vessels berth within walking distance to downtown (Old Fortress).

Livorno's new Alto Fondale cruise terminal is located at Silos Granari Calata Punto Franco. The facility is used only by ships operating on roundtrip itinerariess from Livorno (turnarounds). It is located approx 0,5 km from the city center. Two big airports are located close to the cruise port terminal - Aeroporto di Pisa (13 km / 8 ml) and Aeroporto di Firenze (Florence, 80 km / 50 ml).

Large cruise ships to Livorno dock at port's container terminal. From there is provided shuttle bus service (terminal to Piazza Grande). Depending on cruise company, this service is at additional charge or complimentary. Taxis at the terminal are also available. The nearest railway station is approx 3 km (1,9 ml) or about 5-min bus drive. Bus shuttles stop at the train station too. At the terminal, cruise passsengers can purchase bus and train (roundtrip) tickets to Pisa, Florence and Lucca. Trains from Livorno to Pisa depart every 30 min.

In the end of 2013 was approved a 3-year plan for expanding the cruise port. It included the whole Alto Fondale and Calata Orlando piers, and provided 3 more cruise ship dedicated berths for larger vessels (with length over 300 m / 980 ft).

Port's future expansion involves a huge investment for redesigning of its infrastructure in order commercial berths to be relocated, so cargo and passenger shipping traffic to be separated. This project's first stage will be completed in 2017. By the year 2022 all should be completed, but the commercial piers will still be used by cruise ships in the meantime.

In the near future, Port Livorno will offer LNG bunkering at a new (dedicated) cruise terminal just 20 km (12 ml) away from the cruise port. The port autority company announced in July 2016 that they are considering the option to use the LNG plant to refuel LNG-powered cruise ships . This way Livorno will join the seaports offering LNG bunkering (liquefied natural gas). Close-to-port LNG supply service will allow vessels to bunker directly - without using LNG barges or trucks to provide them with fuel.

Livorno is also thye cruise port to Pisa and Florence. The long list of Livorno's places of interest and most popular tourist attractions includes:

  • Cathedral of Saint Francis of Assisi
  • Acquario comunale Diacinto Cestoni
  • Fortezza Nuova
  • Fortezza Vecchia
  • Fosso Reale
  • Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori
  • Museo di storia naturale del Mediterraneo
  • Orto Botanico del Mediterraneo
  • Old English Cemetery
  • Sanctuary of Montenero
  • Porto Mediceo
  • Venezia Nuova
  • Terrazza Mascagni

A popular shore excursion offered from Livorno cruise port is the bus tour of Bolgheri and the Wine Road, located at approx 40 min drive distance from the port. The famous Viale dei Cipressi leads cruise tourists to the village of Bolgheri. After visiting the craft shops and wine bars, tourists travel to the vineyards where they have the chance to taste local delicacies, such as Olive Oil, honey, bread and cheeses.

To promote the potential of the Livorno territory, as an alternative to the classic Tuscany tour, Porto 2000 presented at Seatrade Cruise Med (in  Tenerife, Canaries ) a new marketing project called "Why Livorno", which was launched at Seatrade Cruise Global (in  Fort Lauderdale, Florida USA ) in March 2017.
