Raga: A Film Journey into the Soul of India (1971)

Out in October…

“Originally released in 1971, Raga: A Film Journey into the Soul of India documents the life of sitar master Ravi Shankar in the late 1960s and early 1970s, following him on his return to India to revisit his guru, Bengali multi-instrumentalist and composer, Baba Ustad Allauddin Khan. It further explores Shankar’s life as a musician and teacher in the United States and Europe, initiating those in the West to the exceptional world that is Indian classical music and culture. Through rare and candid footage shot in both India and the United States, Raga sheds light on Shankar’s influences and collaborations, from Allauddin Khan to his famed dancer brother Uday Shankar, to his associations with Western musicians Yehudi Menuhin and George Harrison. Fully narrated by Shankar himself, Raga reveals music as the soul of India and of Shankar’s life. The premiere DVD release of Raga features a digitally re-mastered 35mm print optimized to modern color range resolution and standard and a fully re-mastered audio soundtrack.”

Raga: A Journey into the Soul of India (USA)

raga a film journey to the soul of india

(97 min; 1971; English/Hindi) Director: Howard Worth

Shot in the second half of the 1960s by Howard Worth, the documentary captures the famous sitarist in India with his mentor, on the banks of the Ganges, before telling the story of his breaking of new ground in America and of his influential friendships with Yehudi Menuhin and George Harrison, the spiritually awakened guitarist of the Beatles. With illuminating reflections on Hinduism, on the transmission of traditional knowledge, and on intercultural dialogue, “Raga” analyses the thirst for spirituality and appetite for new horizons which the youth culture of the time were engaged in. The keystone of the screenplay, Ravi Shankar's performance at the legendary Monterey Festival, amply attests to this phenomenon. A profound and richly illustrated piece of cinematography which stands amongst the great world music documentaries, like "Tropicalia", the film devoted to the Brazilian avant-garde of the 60's, and "El Gusto", the touching panorama devoted to the Algerian chaâbi.

Raga: a film journey into the soul of india.

raga a film journey to the soul of india

One of the opening scenes shows Shankar mesmerizing a large audience of young adults, including many hippies, with Indian classical music. “ George Harrison became my student in the mid sixties, which certainly opened up the biggest door in all the continents for me ,” says Ravi Shankar. “ George was one whom I loved very much as he was so deeply attracted to our music and the Vedic culture and traditions of India .” The film documents the life of Shankar during the exciting hippy era, in the late 1960s and 1970s. The footage includes fascinating cinematography shot in India, as well as segments filmed in the United States. The music includes Indian classical and spiritual chants. “ It has been so many years since I went on this journey with Howard Worth and Nancy Bacal, to India and around the United States, to document my very special relationship with my music, my origins and my life as an Indian musician working in the West ,” adds Shankar. “ Music is the soul of India and it has always been my life as well. Many might ask, why re-release Raga now? The answer is simple: it was a very special period of my life .”

Ravi Shankar narrates the documentary himself, providing insightful details about his past and his relationship with western culture. After many years, he travels back to India to revisit his guru, Bengali multi-instrumentalist and composer, Baba Ustad Allauddin Khan.

“ It is with Raga , that I offer my old admirers a chance to reminisce and new audiences a glimpse and opportunity to discover once again the universe from which I have cultivated my music, my life, and my deep love of Indian classical music ,” concludes Shankar.

Raga: A Film Journey into the Soul of India is an essential film about one of the most influential musicians in the world music scene.

mostly mesmerizing and wonderful, much like a Jacques Cousteau film about a great musician at a time of great changes.

i love how it touches on the complexity of Indian classical music's musicianship and oral tradition. imagine you are a really great guitar player in Western music. but the only way to become pro is to have Jimmy Page as your teacher and he demands that you learn, memorize and recite at will all of his solos, especially the twenty minute live versions with the bow, note-for-note, bends and all, no matter how many years it takes you. now imagine that Jimmy Page isn't drug-addled and better at guitar and you'll start cluing into how gifted Ravi Shankar was. it's a higher order of magnitude in terms of difficulty and discipline than most people in the West can comprehend and i suppose this is a big part of what fascinated George Harrison in particular.

Ravi Shankar returns to India to visit his aged guru and to reflect on his life and his music, and the increasing interest in Indian music coming from the West and how deep that interest goes.

"The only language I really know is music."

R.I.P. Ravi Shankar

The closest cinema has ever come to truly displaying unfiltered passion on screen. Every second is so masterfully crafted, allowing the viewer to get completely sucked into this other culture, just as Shankar's music had.

Ravi is a genius and it’s very insightful seeing him struggle with the as yet undefined appropriation of his culture and music by the impatient West

That East meets West montage towards the end  was soooo of its time, I loved it

In many way a child of it’s time, but thus also comes with some trippy ass scenes at some point. All in all a quite charming insight in the life and work of Ravi Shankar and the principles of the Raga, Indian classical music and the principle of devotion, guru and disciple and tradition. Nonetheless, you don’t really learn too much about Ravi personally, even though he leads us through all of the film. But yeah. My cup of tea.
