How to Access Desktop Websites in Safari

Method 1: On iPhone

Note : Modern websites have responsive designs that adapt to different screen sizes, making it challenging to force a desktop view. This can lead to websites displaying their mobile/tablet view even when the feature to access a desktop website is enabled in Safari.

Step 1: Launch the Safari browser and visit a webpage.

Step 2: Once you load the webpage, find the extension icon in the address bar and tap on it.

Step 3: Select Request Desktop Website , and Safari will reload the webpage in desktop mode.

Method 2: On iPad

While we don’t recommend using a desktop mode in Safari for iPhone, we argue against the same on the Safari iPad app. Most iPad users use the device in horizontal mode and with iPad screen size reaching almost 13-inch, it makes sense to use the Safari browser in desktop mode only.

That’s the reason Apple has set the desktop mode as the default view on Safari for iPad.

Enable All Websites to Open in Desktop Mode

You can return to the same extensions menu and request a mobile website to browse on your iPhone. If you wish to open all the tabs in the future in desktop mode only, you must tweak the Safari settings menu.

Step 1: Open the Settings app on iPhone and tap on Safari .

Step 2: Find the Settings for the websites menu and select Request Desktop Website . Enable the toggle for all websites from the following menu.

From now on, every web query will load in desktop mode in Safari for iPhone. However, the desktop mode experience can be below-average on a small screen.

If you don’t see the websites loading in desktop mode, you must make a similar setting tweak on your iPad.

Step 1: Open iPad Settings > go to Safari .

Step 2: Select the Request Desktop Website option and enable the toggle for the same.

How to force your iPhone or iPad to load the desktop version of a website

Most of the time using a mobile-friendly website is just fine -- until it's not, and you need the full desktop version of a site.

One drawback to relying on an iPhone or iPad for your web browsing needs is that you're almost always using the mobile version of a website. And for the most part, mobile websites are fully capable versions of the same experience you would have using a full desktop-class browser.

However, there are times when the mobile version of a website lacks a feature or capability that the full website offers. If you find yourself in need of the full desktop version of a website, you can force mobile Safari to request and load the full version of a website with just a couple of taps.

When viewing a webpage in Safari, long-press on the Refresh button. A small prompt will show up just below the button, giving you the option to Request Desktop Site . Tap on the drop-down, which will prompt Safari to reload the current page, but this time it should reflect the same experience you would have on a Mac or PC.

How to Switch to the Desktop Versions of Your Favorite Mobile Sites

Reading articles on a phone in the 2020s is almost impossible—mobile designers seem intent on hiding the article you want to read. First there's the banner at the top of the site, which follows you as you scroll. That's bad enough, but some sites add another banner that follows you at the bottom of the screen, generally with an ad, a newsletter signup form, and a reminder that the app "works better" than the website. Keep scrolling and the text of the article will be interrupted several times between the top and bottom bars.

It's a mess. And there's a workaround, of sorts: requesting the desktop version of a site.

It's hard to remember now, but in the early days of smartphones most websites were built with desktop computers in mind. Browsing the web on an iPhone in 2009 meant doing a lot of scrolling, panning, and zooming to see the section of the page you were interested in. It was annoying, granted, but far less annoying than browsing a typical mobile page in 2023. Desktop sites, meanwhile, have gotten a lot better about rescaling themselves. This is called “ responsive design .” Go ahead, if you're on a computer: Make this window more narrow and watch as the site changes on the fly to fit the space you give it.

This has all been true for a long time. The main difference between the "mobile" version of a site and the "desktop" one are the annoyances that follow you as you scroll. That means that, generally, all you have to lose by requesting the desktop version of a site are the mobile-specific annoyances. It's not a trick that will work on every site, granted, but it works on many.

Requesting the desktop version of a site isn't hard. On the iPhone and iPad's Safari browser you need to tap the " aA " icon in the bottom-right corner, then click Request Desktop Website .

This will request the desktop version of the site for this session. You can also change the settings to automatically ask for the desktop version—just tap Website Settings in the same menu and you'll see the option to request the desktop website automatically for that domain.

On an Android device running the Chrome browser you need to tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, then tap the Desktop Site checkmark.

In either Android or iOS the website you're reading should refresh, after which you will get the desktop version of the site. The page may not even look different, and in some cases won't behave differently, but in my testing most websites are at least a little easier to use this way. In particular, requesting the desktop website tends to reduce the number of bars of nonsense that follow you as you scroll.

Requesting the desktop version of a site removes some annoyances, but it's not perfect. If you want to see the article you're currently reading, and only that article, you'll have to go one stop further: reading mode. This is a feature offered on all major smartphones that can extract the text of an article from any website and show you only that.

Safari has this feature built-in: just tap the " aA " button in the left-side of the address bar and tap Show Reader . You will then see only the article text. You can optionally set any domain to automatically load articles with reading mode, if you like—I recommend doing this if you notice a particular website is consistently annoying.

Android doesn't come with reading mode, sadly, but you can add one by installing Reading Mode , an official Google tool you can download from the Google Play Store . This application adds a systemwide button that you can use in any app, including the Chrome browser. It will extract all text and show it to you alone. It can also read the text to you out loud, if you like.

The web is only getting more and more cluttered, but at least you can fight back. It's just a matter of using the right tools.

If you are using Google Chrome browser on Android Phone or Tablet, you can go back to Mobile Version of website by tapping on 3-dots icon and unchecking the little box next to Request Desktop Site option.

Requesting a desktop site in Safari on an iPhone used to be a two-step affair. However, with the arrival of iOS 18 , iPhone users now need to go the extra mile. Here’s what the process looks like now:

How to view desktop site in safari.

Safari is fast and optimized for mobile devices. That's usually a good thing. But there are still a few websites that refuse to adapt to mobile Safari or provide an inferior experience on their mobile site. In times like these, you can switch to the desktop version of the website.

Like many iOS features, especially ones for Safari, the Request Desktop Site feature is hidden. With iOS 13, Apple has changed the placement of this option, which makes it a bit easier to find. As iPadOS 13 automatically loads desktop websites, iPad users won't need to look for this feature after updating.

Here's how this feature works on devices running iOS 12 and iOS 13.

iOS 12 and Below

Open the Safari app on your iPhone or iPad and load a website. Now, tap and hold on the "Refresh" button next to the URL bar.

You'll see a popup at the bottom of the screen. From here, select "Request Desktop Site."

The website will reload, and you'll now see the desktop version of the site . To go back to the mobile version, tap and hold on the "Refresh" button again and select "Request Mobile Site."

iOS 13 and Above

With the iOS 13 update, Apple has improved the Safari browser in a couple of important ways. While most improvements are seen on the iPad version, iPhone users get access to the new Safari Download Manager as well as a new customization menu for websites.

Tap on the "Aa" icon to see a couple of new menu options. From here, select the "Request Desktop Website" button to open the desktop version of the website.

Come back to the same menu to switch back to the mobile version.

And that's it. You now know how to access desktop websites on your iPhone and iPad using mobile Safari.

You can request the desktop version of a webpage easily in Safari with new versions of iOS, though if you’re familiar with the older approach then you’ll notice the feature is accessed differently than prior versions of Safari on iPhone and iPad.

Requesting a Desktop Site in Safari for iOS on iPhone or iPad

This trick works the same to request the desktop version of a site in Safari for iOS 13, iOS 12, iOS 11, iOS 10, iOS 9, and on both iPhone and iPad.

• Open the web page in Safari for iOS that you wish to request the desktop site version of
• Tap on the URL bar at the very top of the screen, this a tap reveals the navigation buttons in Safari for iOS and sharing button
• Tap the sharing button, it looks like a box with an arrow coming out of it
• Swipe over on the various action icons until you see “Request Desktop Site” and tap on that button

• If successful, the webpage will reload but with the desktop version, otherwise the mobile version will be served again

Almost all websites will allow users to request the desktop version instead of the mobile site, but some don’t, which is why the button is called Request not Demand Desktop Site.

You can also go the other way and request a mobile site if you’re served a desktop version erroneously. Generally speaking, if you’re on a mobile device, you should use the mobile version of a site, as they’re almost always optimized for the device screen and allows for improved usability.

This is directed at Safari in modern versions of iOS, whether it’s iOS 13, iOS 12, iOS 11, iOS 10, iOS 9 or later, but prior versions of iOS users have been able to request the desktop version of a webpage in prior versions of iOS Safari too, but through a less intuitive approach that involved pulling down from the top of the URL bar. Now the feature has simply moved to an easier and more accessible location.

Unfortunately many, many sites, including this very one, do not honor the request.

Actually the way mobile / desktop serving works is through a user agent string, which is how the browser identifies the device, change the string and the device changes, period, so there is no such thing as ‘not honoring the request’ and you are experiencing user error (follow instructions carefully, skimming or ignoring tasks is usually the source of the problem). The desktop version and mobile version works just fine on this site and every other if you change the user agent, thats how this works. You can change the user agent and request it, which is specifically shown in the screen shots, or you can scroll to the bottom of the page and choose ‘desktop version’

It sounds like you can’t figure out how to use the ‘request desktop site’ feature on your iPhone. Like most technical issues, the problem is usually user error. Read the instructions and try again.

No he’s right. In many websites it still reloads the same mobile version of the website even after tapping on ‘request desktop site’ in safari. It doesn’t seem to happen in google chrome, however. By the way on iOS 9 or later, the request desktop site feature is also accessible by tap and holding on the reload button (circular arrow on the right hand side pf the url address bar).

Nice! I’ve tried so hard to access YouTube’s desktop site for the past year. I just tried it and it worked. It asked to open in app, I hit cancel, then tried it again and it opened the desktop version. Thanks for the tip!

Much easier way is to hold the refresh button until you get a notification for “Request Desktop Site”

You can also access this by pressing and holding on the reload page icon in the address bar.

But numerous sires, notably ESPN! NYT, WAPO, ZDNet, will not serve up the desktop versions. Maybe they don’t understand that people actually use iPads.

How To : iOS 13 Makes It Easier to Request Desktop & Mobile Sites for Webpages on Your iPhone

Ever since iOS 7 , you could ask Safari on iPhone to show you the desktop version of a website, and in iOS 9 , it became even easier to do. However, it's always been a hidden feature, something you wouldn't know is there without reading articles or tips online telling you what to do. Apple's iOS 13 update shines a light on it so everyone will know it's there, ready to use.

Many years ago, you'd need to tap the search field, then pull down the page to view the "Request Desktop Site" option. Then, it became easier by long-pressing the refresh icon or opening the Share sheet, and selecting the "Request Desktop Site" option. Now, the option is built into the new Website View menu in iOS 13, which you can easily access as we'll show you below.

To access the setting, first head to the mobile site that you'd want to switch to its desktop view, then tap on the "AA" icon in the left of the search field. From there, tap "Request Desktop Website" on the pop-up menu, and the site will instantly show up in its desktop format — provided it has a supported desktop version.

What's interesting about this is that it's not a temporary setting. The webpage in question will stay in its desktop version for as long as you keep the tab open, whenever you close the tab then revisit the page in another tab, and whenever you force-quit Safari.

However, before iOS 13's stable release, the latter two would reset the page back to the mobile view. So it may be just a bug that it does not anymore, especially considering when you open the Website View menu again, it says "Request Desktop Website" instead of "Request Mobile Website" when it should be the opposite.

Additionally, you can manually switch back to a mobile view of a website by tapping "AA" again and selecting "Request Mobile Website." Yes, Apple has finally added that wordage, when before you would still have to select "Desktop" to go back to a mobile site view.

Safari in iOS 13 also gives you the ability to force specific websites to default to desktop mode . The process is also just as simple to pull off, and it can even be done for multiple websites to give you more control.

Safari on my MacBook is loading mobile versions of some websites,

how can I set it back? Cant seem to find how.

Hello Simon Board,

To disable the "Request Desktop Site" feature on Safari on your MacBook, follow these steps:

• Open Safari on your MacBook.
• Click on "Safari" in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
• Click on "Preferences."
• Click on the "Advanced" tab.
• Uncheck the box next to "Show Develop menu in menu bar."
• Close the Preferences window.

This will prevent Safari from loading mobile versions of websites by default. If you ever want to switch back to the mobile version of a website, you can still do so by holding down the "Command" key and clicking the refresh button on the website you want to view the mobile version of.

Alternatively,

While on the website which loads mobile version, click and hold the refresh button on the address bar.

This will bring up a menu, there select "Request Desktop Site".

This will only apply for the current website you are in and does not set it as default.

Bookmark a website in Safari on iPhone

You can bookmark a website, add a website to Favorites, or add a website icon to the Home Screen to easily revisit it later.

Bookmark a favorite website

Open the webpage you want to bookmark.

View and organize your bookmarks

Tap Edit, then do any of the following:

Create a new folder: Tap New Folder at the bottom left, enter a name, then tap Done.

Rename bookmarks: Tap the bookmark, enter a new name, then tap Done.

Tap See All (next to Saved to iCloud), then make sure Safari is turned on.

Add a website icon to your Home Screen

You can add a website icon to your iPhone Home Screen for quick access.

Go to the website you want to add to your Home Screen.

Scroll down the list of options, then tap Add to Home Screen.

The icon appears only on the device where you add it.

• In Apple Maps , users can browse thousands of hikes across U.S. national parks and easily create their own custom walking routes, which they can access offline. Users can also save their favourite national park hikes, custom walking routes, and locations to an all-new Places Library, and add personal notes about each spot.
• Game Mode enhances the gaming experience with more consistent frame rates, especially during long play sessions, and makes AirPods, game controllers, and other wireless accessories even more responsive.
• Users get new ways to pay with Apple Pay online and in apps on iPhone and iPad. Starting today, eligible U.S. users will be able to redeem rewards with Discover credit cards, 5 as well as apply for loans directly through Affirm, and eligible U.K. users will be able to access installments with Monzo Flex right at checkout when they use Apple Pay. 6 With Tap to Cash, users can send and receive Apple Cash by simply holding their iPhone near another iPhone or Apple Watch. 7 And with the new ticket experience in Apple Wallet , fans can access even more information about their events, such as venue maps, local weather forecasts, recommended Apple Music playlists, and much more. 8
• In the  Notes app , math formulas and equations entered while typing are solved instantly. New collapsible sections and highlighting make it easier to emphasize what’s important.
• Calendar  becomes even more helpful by showing both events and tasks from  Reminders.  Users can create, edit, and complete reminders right from Calendar, and the updated month view provides an overview of events and tasks at a glance.
• In Journal , an all-new insights view helps users keep track of their journaling goals, the ability to search and sort entries makes it easy to enjoy past memories, and a Journal widget lets users quickly start an entry from the Home Screen or Lock Screen. Time spent journaling can be saved as mindful minutes in the Health app, and users can log their state of mind right in Journal.
• The Home app introduces guest access, providing users with easy ways to grant guests control of locks, garage doors, and security systems; set schedules for when guests can access the home; and more. With convenient updates to the Energy category, the Home app also makes it easier for eligible users to access, understand, and make more informed decisions about their home electricity use.
• Emergency SOS Live Video  allows users to share context through streaming video and recorded media. In the middle of an emergency call, participating emergency dispatchers can send a request for a user to share live video or media from the user’s camera roll over a secure connection, making it easier and faster to get help. 9
• Updates coming to AirPods will transform the way users take calls, respond to Siri, and immerse themselves in their favourite games with AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, and AirPods Pro 2. Voice Isolation helps the caller’s voice be heard in loud or windy environments, while Siri Interactions allow users to nod or shake their head to respond to Siri announcements. AirPods updates also provide the best wireless audio latency Apple has ever delivered for mobile gaming, and add Personalized Spatial Audio for all AirPods models for even more immersive gameplay.
• Later this fall, AirPods Pro 2 add a clinical-grade, over-the-counter Hearing Aid capability for users with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. Based on results from an intuitive, clinically validated Hearing Test users can take from the comfort of their own home using AirPods Pro 2 and a compatible iPhone or iPad, this new feature seamlessly transforms AirPods Pro into a personalized hearing aid set to meet the specific needs of the user, making access to hearing assistance easier than ever at an approachable price point. 10
• In the Health app , Medical ID has been redesigned to make it even easier for first responders to find the most important information in an emergency. The Health app helps users better understand their data during pregnancy by making adjustments and recommendations to reflect changes in their physical and mental health.
• The Fitness app on iPhone now offers users the ability to customize the Summary tab, and Apple Fitness+ has been redesigned with personalized workout and meditation recommendations in For You, more powerful search, and enhanced awards for extra motivation.
• New accessibility features include Eye Tracking, a built-in option for navigating iPhone with just eyes; Music Haptics, a new way for users who are deaf or hard of hearing to experience music using the Taptic Engine in iPhone; Vocal Shortcuts that enable users to perform tasks by making a custom sound; and Vehicle Motion Cues, which helps reduce motion sickness for passengers using iPhone in a moving vehicle. Accessibility features are now available for CarPlay, including Voice Control, Sound Recognition, Color Filters, and Bold Text.

iOS 18 is now available, bringing iPhone users around the world new ways to personalize their iPhone with deeper customization to the Home Screen and Control Center; the biggest-ever redesign to Photos, making it even easier to find and relive special moments; and major enhancements to Messages and Mail. Starting next month, iOS 18 will introduce Apple Intelligence, the personal intelligence system that combines the power of generative models with personal context to deliver intelligence that is incredibly useful and relevant while protecting users’ privacy and security. 1

In iOS 18, users can customize their Home Screen in exciting new ways by placing app icons and widgets to frame the wallpaper or create the ideal layout on each page. Users can also choose how the app icons and widgets are presented — light, dark, or with a coloured tint — or make app icons appear larger for a new streamlined look. Control Center is redesigned to be even more flexible. Powerful groups of controls — including favourites, media playback, Home controls and connectivity, and the new controls gallery featuring options from third-party apps — can be organized so that they’re always just a swipe away. Users can also access their favourite controls from the Action button, and for the first time, users can change the controls on the Lock Screen or remove them entirely.

The biggest-ever update to Photos makes it easier to find and relive special moments. The beautiful, simplified layout puts the library into a unified yet familiar view. New collections like Recent Days, People & Pets, and Trips automatically keep the library organized with on-device intelligence, so users can spend less time searching and more time enjoying their memories. Users can personalize their experience with a customizable layout that reflects what is most important to them and pin favourite collections to keep them easily accessible.

Messages offers major updates to the ways users express themselves and stay connected. Formatting options like bold, italic, underline, and strikethrough let users better convey tone; all-new text effects bring words, phrases, and sentences to life; emoji and sticker Tapbacks give users endless ways to react in a conversation; and users can compose an iMessage to send later. For times when cellular and Wi-Fi connections aren’t available, Messages via satellite connects users to a satellite in space right from the Messages app to send and receive texts, emoji, and Tapbacks over iMessage and SMS. 2 When messaging contacts who do not have an Apple device, the Messages app now supports RCS for richer media and more reliable group messaging compared to SMS and MMS.

The Phone app helps users stay organized with the ability to record and transcribe live calls, making it easier to recall important details later. 3 Call participants are notified before a recording begins, and transcripts are conveniently saved to the Notes app, allowing users to quickly search and review what was discussed.

Available later this year, categorization in Mail organizes messages to help users stay on top of their inbox. The Primary category lets users focus on the messages that matter most or contain time-sensitive information. Transactions, Updates, and Promotions are grouped by sender in a new digest view that pulls together all relevant emails from a business, allowing users to quickly scan for what’s important in the moment.

Safari is the world’s fastest browser, and with iOS 18, it offers even more capabilities for browsing the web. 4 Highlights intelligently surface key information — like a location’s address, a summary, or more information about a movie, TV show, or song — after a webpage is loaded. The redesigned Reader brings more ways to enjoy articles with a streamlined view, a summary, and a table of contents for longer articles. With Distraction Control, users can hide items on a webpage that they may find disruptive to their browsing, such as sign-in banners or content overlays within a website.

Passwords is a new app built on the foundation of Keychain that makes it even easier for users to access their passwords and see all their credentials — like passwords, passcodes, and verification codes — all in one place. Passwords is backed by incredibly secure end-to-end encryption; seamlessly syncs across devices; and alerts users when a password could be easily guessed, has been used multiple times, or has appeared in a known data leak.

iOS 18 gives users tools to manage who can see their apps, how their contacts are shared, and how their iPhone connects to accessories. Locked and hidden apps offer users peace of mind that information they want to keep private, such as app notifications and content, will not inadvertently be seen by others. Users can now lock an app, and for additional privacy, they can also hide an app, moving it to a locked, hidden apps folder. When an app is locked or hidden, content like messages or emails inside the app are hidden from search, notifications, and other places across the system. In addition, iOS 18 lets users share only specific contacts with an app, and developers can offer users a more seamless and private experience when connecting third-party accessories with iPhone.

Apple Intelligence is deeply integrated into iOS 18, harnessing the power of Apple silicon to understand and create language and images, take action across apps, and draw from personal context to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks — all while protecting users’ privacy and security. The first set of Apple Intelligence features will be available next month, delivering experiences that are delightful, intuitive, easy to use, and specially designed to help users do the things that matter most to them.

With Writing Tools, users can refine their words by rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing text nearly everywhere they write, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps. In Photos, the Memories feature now enables users to create the movies they want to see by simply typing a description. In addition, natural language can be used to search for specific photos, and search in videos gets more powerful with the ability to find specific moments in clips. The new Clean Up tool can identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo — without accidentally altering the subject. And in the Notes and Phone apps, users can record, transcribe, and summarize audio. When a recording is initiated while on a call in the Phone app, participants are automatically notified, and once the call ends, Apple Intelligence generates a summary to help recall key points.

Siri becomes more natural, flexible, and deeply integrated into the system experience. It has a brand-new design with an elegant glowing light that wraps around the edge of the screen when active on iPhone. Users can type to Siri at any time on iPhone, and can switch fluidly between text and voice as they use Siri to accelerate everyday tasks. With richer language-understanding capabilities, Siri can follow along when users stumble over their words and can maintain context from one request to the next. In addition, with Siri’s extensive product knowledge, it can now answer thousands of questions about the features and settings of Apple devices.

With many Apple Intelligence models running entirely on device, as well as the introduction of Private Cloud Compute — which extends the privacy and security of Apple devices into the cloud to unlock even more intelligence — Apple Intelligence represents an extraordinary step forward for privacy in artificial intelligence.

• Apple Intelligence will be available as a free software update. The first set of Apple Intelligence features will be available in beta next month as part of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, with more features rolling out in the months to come. It will be available on iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac with M1 and later, with device and Siri language set to U.S. English. Additional languages and platforms are coming over the course of the next year. Later this year, Apple Intelligence will add support for localized English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.K. In the coming year, Apple Intelligence will expand to more languages, like Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish.
