Just returned from an AHI trip to South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. Wonderful experience all around. Extremely competent guide (Marc), great accommodations, and lots of safaris and sightseeing. Always felt safe and well taken care of. Transfers went seamlessly. All in all a very well organized, managed, and executed group trip.

I am looking for another land trip so, having traveled with AHI twice and having been extremely pleased, I "googled" them and found these reviews on Yelp. I was suprised at the 2 1/2 star rating so I read the reviews. Most of the negative reviews revolved around the pandemic mess and trip cancellations of 2020-2021. We had a trip to Israel and Jordan booked for March 2020 that was cancelled. The company extended to us a voucher for the full amount we paid and valid for the next two years. We rebooked for March 2022 and had a great time on the trip. AHI was extremely courteous and helpful over this difficult time.

I wish zero stars were an option. AHI is a company of scammers. I paid in full for a package and booked external travel insurance. I called a few months after booking to confirm flight times and was told the trip had been cancelled due to low enrollment the prior month. AHI literally held onto my entire payment, meanwhile I had already jumped through hoops at work and made multiple plans around this trip. As if this weren't frustrating enough, I had to call multiple times to get my refund after multiple excuses about switching accounting systems, certain people being unavailable, others being to blame for miscommunication. It doesn't matter your budget or how much time you have on your hands, no one deserves to deal with this degree of unprofessionalism and lack of ethics. Avoid this company, there are better options out there.

I've been on three AHI trips through an organization and they were all fantastic. They were: Southern Spain, Amalfi Coast, and Peru. The trips are for curious travelers who want to learn when they travel. Guides and guests lecturers are usually top-notch, the itineraries run smoothly, hotels are often hidden gems - maybe not always 5 star but well-located and perfectly comfortable. I still keep in touch with our Spanish guide/tour leader who was the greatest!

Photo of Ben A.

I have been receiving Alumni tour promotions for years (degrees from 3 universities). Finally took one, to Tuscany, because I liked the itinerary and price. Normally I plan my own domestic and foreign travel. This trip exceeded my expectations in every way. I was very pleased, and will consider booking through AHI again in the future.

Ahi Travel - update. they take care of their clients. my parents love their vacations and have taken 8 tips with them. They make lifelong friends with people who are on these vacations with them. Recently they had a trip planned and the agency had a challenge securing a full refund from vendors they use. They went out of their way to refund 100% of the money taken for the vacation. thanks for your honesty. i'll update again once the money is received.

Since writing the review a customer satisfaction specialist contacted my parents to indicate ownership intends to refund 90% of the money collected. I appreciate their concern and doing the right thing. I don't believe they should keep $1,200 of a canceled trip. But I am happy they took the right step.

Hi my parents are 90 and 78. They have traveled with you as good customers for over a decade. 9 trips in total. Everyone in hospitality has issued refunds to their guests. My parents were planning to my their last trip in April to Celebrate their 50th anniversary. My mother has contacted you many times starting March 9th. You refuse to issue her a refund. My father a 90 year old diabetic and cancer survivor is no longer able to travel due to COVID 19 and your canceling the trip. You were not able to provide the trip. You refuse to refund their money. Why is it you treat good customers so poorly. REFUND their money. Shame on you.

Photo of Sabrina W.

NO good at all. No referral fees when most all of the other Tour Companies reward you for bringing them new travelers. Also they keep all deposits even when you provide at least 6 months notice re a cancellation and even NOW during COVID - they keep their FULL 50% of your money !!! --- when all they did was have your name on a list as an interested party. They are terrible corporate citizens during this pandemic and I will never book with them again because of this.

Photo of Carlos S.

I am 70 and my wife is 67. We have traveled with AHI several times. We have been good customers. We are retired and saved up so we could celebrate my milestone birthday with our two daughters. We booked a trip for June and planned on celebrating our 45th anniversary as well. We canceled the trip due to COVID-19 back in early March when pandemic was on the rise in Spain; our destination for June. Given our age and an autoimmune vulnerability one of our daughters has, we decided to cancel. We did so only because there was a deadly global pandemic impacting seniors and those with compromised immune systems. We contacted AHI and they refused to refund part of our downpayment in the amount of $1,737. As we argued with them, all travel from Spain was banned by the US State Department. AHI does not take into account circumstances like ours. Is this how they treat good repeat customers? The right thing would be to reimburse our hard-saved retirement money. AHI certainly made this a milestone birthday - cheated out of nearly two grand. I say do not use AHI for your travels. Pick someone else. I know we will.

Photo of Nancy P.

I Would NOT recommend this agency. As a big birthday gift, we are planning an alumni trip which uses this agency. When purchasing our airline tickets we made it very clear we wanted to buy tickets that we could use our air miles to upgrade. They booked our tickets in a class that could not be upgraded. When we informed them of the mistake, they said there was a misunderstanding. They would reverse the ticket fee less $600. In essence the cost of cancelling the ticket with the airlines. We would be paying to correct their mistake. We pointed out the actual charge to reversing 2 airline tickets was $500. We suggested that we split the cost which they refused. THIS AGENCY IS EITHER INCOMPETENT OR DISHONEST OR MAYBE BOTH.

AHI alumni travel, reviews please

I am considering travelling with AHI through my university alumni travel next year. The company is AHI. If you have travelled with this company, I would appreciate some feedback about your trip. Any recommendations, comments or feedback would be appreciated. THANKS in advance,

I didn't remember any instances of AHI being mentioned here, so I did a search and didn't find any previous citations here. Sorry...

Smithsonian Journeys Consumer Reviews

VIRGINIA -- We had the opposite experience with Smithsonian. We had booked a family trip to Yellowstone in 2020, which of course was cancelled because of the pandemic. We chose to roll over our deposit instead of taking a refund. In 2021, the no one else had signed up due to the continued pandemic, so we rolled it over again. In July 2022 we had a fabulous trip to Yellowstone with our grandson. Throughout our experience we were able to talk to a Smithsonian representative personally. We were contacted about adjusting the date of our trip one week earlier to be sure the trip would go. Smithsonian was dealing with travel chaos, just as we were. They were very professional and courteous, as we were with them.

reviews of ahi travel

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS -- In February 2021, we reserved a trip run by Smithsonian Journeys to Normandy, France, scheduled to take place October 2 - 10, 2021. A deposit of $1,000 was sent to Smithsonian Journeys, who used AHI Travel to book hotels and airlines for the trip. We paid a total of $14,476 by check and credit card to AHI Travel for the full cost of the trip including Airline reservations in July and August, the last payment was made on August 3.

On August 25 we received notice that Smithsonian had cancelled the trip because the U.S. Department of State rated travel to France as "Advisory Level 4", DO NOT TRAVEL. Smithsonian offered the option of a full refund, which we took. Smithsonian refunded our $1,000 deposit within two weeks, but as of yet, we have not received the remainder of the funds from AHI Travel. They are claiming that it will take of to 8-weeks for the refund, but $6,300 of the $14,476 we paid to AHI was paid by them to Air France for air travel.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, "If a passenger is owed a refund, an airline, travel agent, or online travel agency must process it within seven business days if the passenger paid by credit card, and 20 business days if the passenger paid by cash or check".

The Normandy trip was not the first trip we have taken with Smithsonian travel and we have previously been happy with their service. However, based on our experience on the Normandy reservation, we would not recommend booking travel with Smithsonian Journeys and AHI Travel.

WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA -- My friend and I booked this trip as a "reunion" with our college buddies. We paid the deposit $1,000.00 on 11/15/19. Then Covid came along, and the trip was cancelled. We chose to have them keep the deposit in anticipation that we could make the next trip. The year 2020 passed, and in late May, 2021, they notified us we could make the trip in October. We talked with our friends, and found out that they had talked to Smithsonian about us all changing our trip to an earlier time slot. Then we found that AHI Travel (awful), booked my friend and I on a different date from our friends in Arizona. We tried to get it changed, and long story short, they finally had an opening on the other date, but did not notify us until mid September with sailing in October.

It had all been a nightmare and a mess, which they caused. We declined the new sailing date, and they have declined to return our $1,000.00 deposit. 2019-2021, and through no fault of ours they refuse. DO NOT TAKE A TRIP WITH THESE PEOPLE. I have travelled for 20 years, and never had such a terrible experience, lack of communication, and refusal to work with us.

Smithsonian Journeys suck!!! Would like to give them zero stars but unfortunately this is not an option. Booked a Peru family adventure trip through Smithsonian Journeys in August 2017. Got confirmation, paid trip in full. Few weeks later got an email from Thomson adventures - the company that Smithsonian had contracted to provide the actual trip - notifying us that Smithsonian Journeys had canceled our trip.

Smithsonian Journeys didn't even had the guts to call us personally to inform of cancellation. Smithsonian Journeys never apologized for the cancellation either. Luckily Thomson Adventures stepped up and offered to take us to the same trip minus Smithsonian lecturers. Turns out that Thomson Adventures never cancel - not for any reason. We had a wonderful trip thanks to the Thomson Adventures.

Shame on Smithsonian Journeys. Don't ever book the trip with Smithsonian Journeys - check out which tour operator they use and book directly with the tour operator. Thomson adventures and Tauck tours are good options - they don't cancel. Have never disappointed us.

TENNESSEE -- I had to cancel a trip with Smithsonian Journeys due to issues with the coronavirus. I cancelled it 6 months in advance. They will not refund my deposit! They want to transfer it to a future trip. I am very futile find that my respect for the Smithsonian is misplaced.

CAMBRIDGE, MA, MASSACHUSETTS -- In October of 2005 my wife and I booked a trip to Peru with Smithsonian Journeys located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The trip is scheduled for May, 2006. We selected this tour because of a great interest in the ruins of Machu Picchu and because it was one of the very few tours that included a stay in Sanctuary Lodge which is the ONLY hotel located within the walls of Machu Picchu. As one of the seven wonders of the modern world, it was CRITICALLY important to us to stay in that facility to achieve our travel desires. We paid a deposit of $500 for each of us.

Over a month later we noticed in one of the brochures from the company that the tour would NOT be staying in Sanctuary Lodge but in another facility some miles away from the monument itself. When I called the company to inquire about this change in January, 2006 I was told that the company uses several different hotels for that part of the trip and they were not going to use Sanctuary Lodge on this trip. I told them that staying at Sanctuary Lodge was the ONLY reason we selected this tour and that if the tour was not going to stay at Sanctuary Lodge we would like to cancel our participation in the tour and have our deposits returned. They refused to do so.

After a series of letters were exchanged they continued to refuse to refund our deposit offering only “travel vouchers” for another tour. In NONE of the letters does the company deny having switched hotels without notification. Obviously, this is unacceptable to us since we believe that Smithsonian Journeys used a form of “bait and switch” and we can NEVER trust this company again. We are experienced travelers and we have never been treated in such a shoddy manner by any other tour operator.

We believe this “bait and switch” tactic to be unethical and the failure to refund our deposits is, at the very least, a terrible business practice. We would like to alert you to the practices of this company as we believe them to be totally unacceptable for any legitimate travel agent.

Any feedback on AHI Travel? My husband and I are considering a trip to Argentina and Chile with this outfit and are wondering what others' experience has been with them.

' class=

We did this program in April of this year. It was absolutely amazing! The Adagio is in a great location, about a half hour walk or bus ride to the language school. The lessons were excellent and such fun. If you have had some beginner French you will be in either level 2 or 3 probably. Level 1 is for pure beginners. They will do a thorough assessment on the first day. The teachers were wonderful at all levels. Our guide Karine was wonderful, and her mother Stella was our tour guide on excursions and she was fantastic. There was just the right balance of excursions and free time. The 4 weeks were just perfect. Unfortunately they are changing to 3 weeks next year, so go this year if you can. We were hoping to do Florence next year, but are unhappy with the change in length and are not quite sure how nice the hotel will be in Florence. We had 30 people in our group and we all got along so well. There are over 600 restaurants in Aix, so we were able to eat out in any price range, and the cafes lining the Cours Mirabeau were so special. My husband would go to the boulangerie every morning for our baguette and pastries. We worked it off by joining a local gym for the month (Keep Cool) so we didn't gain any weight, along with the daily 30 min walks to and from school. The excursions were top rate, as were all the included meals. Aix has several market days a week so we were able to purchase food and make simple meals in our apartment as well. It was a dream come true and we would do it again in a minute. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll be glad to help.

Has anyone done the Croatia Adriatic Coast trip with AHI? We would be interested in knowing your experience. Thanks!

Thanks so much for this.

Just found Ahi Travel's guided tour of Apulia and Amalfi regions of Italy. Has anyone taken this tour in 2014 or 2015? Were most of the meals in hotels versus local restaurants? How were the hotels?

Thank you for any replies,

I am considering The Art of Living - Tuscany for 2016. ( I went on the Art of Living - Provence in 2013 and it was fabulous.) I have been researching the accommodations for Florence - the Hotel & Residence Palazzo Ricasoli - and there seems to be quite a few negative comments about this hotel. Has anyone traveled with AHI and stayed here? What were your thoughts regarding location, cleanliness, etc.

' class=

We traveled on an AHI tour to the Italian Riviera with University of Alabama and University of Iowa alumni in April, 2015. Many features of the trip were fine but we found the hotel food much less than expected. We expected traditional Italian food but instead received "fine" dining entrees which were not to our liking. The tour director was wonderful but our experience with the staff (Erin) in Chicago) was less than expected. We probably would not do another tour with AHI.

An Addendum:

My wife and I just completed a tour with AHI to the "Italian Riviera", staying at the Hotel Vis a Vis in Sestri Levante. The campus director was Simona Contarini. She, the Hotel, and the entire tour were wonderful from our perspective. The site specific guides were excellent, and the food - although as stated above was not overly focused on Italian items - was superb. We could not have been more pleased, and will certainly seek out AHI - and Simona - for future travel.

Travel Guard® is a global travel insurance provider specializing in plans for leisure and business travelers. Its online travel insurance packages include five options, from basic and last-minute trip coverage to more comprehensive plans. This allows travelers to pick a plan that best matches their situation.

For example, budget-minded travelers might go for the Essential Plan which offers basic protections, such as trip cancellation, interruption and delay insurance, coverage for lost, damaged and delayed baggage, and medical, evacuation and death coverage.

On the other hand, the Deluxe Plan — the most comprehensive option — adds such extras as missed connection coverage, security evacuation, travel inconvenience benefits and more. It also boosts high limits for essential coverages.

Last-minute travelers can opt for the Pack N' Go Plan which only includes certain post-departure coverages. Or, if you travel often, the Annual Plan can cover your trips throughout the year.

Finally, Travel Guard offers "offline" travel insurance packages, meaning you'll have to call if you're looking for a specialty plan.

Coverage types

Depending on the plan, here are the types of protection Travel Guard can include in your package:

  • Trip cancellations
  • Trip interruption
  • Baggage coverage
  • Baggage delay
  • Travel medical expenses
  • Travel inconvenience benefits (reimbursement for such situations as runway delays, cruise diversion and other unforeseen situations)
  • Medical evacuation
  • Trip Saver (reimbursement for meals, hotels and transportation if you need to begin your trip sooner due to weather or airline changes)
  • Trip exchange (reimbursement in case you have to cancel your trip and book a new one due to covered unforeseen circumstances)
  • Security evacuation (due to a riot or civil disorder)
  • Flight guard (coverage for accidental death or dismemberment that occurs when traveling by plane)
  • Pre-existing medical conditions exclusion waiver

You can also customize your plan with add-ons, such as car rental insurance and "cancel for any reason" coverage .

Travel Guard landed on our list of the best travel insurance companies thanks to its variety of coverage. With plenty of options to choose from, both online and offline, it's easy to build a policy that meets your needs.

Travel Guard also features 24-hour concierge services that you can use to book a new flight in case of an emergency or delay.

The provider's website also offers informational resources — here, you can check travel news, read safety tips and find general travel advice. Additionally, the website lets you modify your plan, file a claim and check its status, or apply for a voucher or refund.

As of writing, Travel Guard doesn't offer any discounts. That's common for travel insurance — you're more likely to find deals when shopping for other types of insurance, such as home and auto insurance .

Travel Guard is a portfolio of travel insurance and travel-related services offered by AIG Travel, a member of American International Group (AIG). AIG also offers life insurance and a variety of business insurance products.

Travel Guard makes it easy to get a travel insurance policy customized to your needs. But before you purchase coverage, it's always a good idea to shop around.

For example, if you're going on a cruise, you might want to look at Nationwide Travel Insurance . The provider advertises cruise-specific insurance with three plan options available. This type of coverage is designed with issues unique to cruises in mind — from ship-based breakdowns to missed pre-pard excursions.

If you're planning a more active trip filled with rock climbing or sky diving, Berkshire Hathaway offers the AdrenalineCare® plan which features coverage for unforeseen costs that result from participating in extreme sports on your trip, as well as reimbursement for sporting equipment delay. Pre-existing conditions are covered under this plan (if you meet qualifying conditions).

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection has multiple plans to cover vacations from luxury travel to adventure travel. The brand's LuxuryCare offers the highest limits of travel insurance coverage offered by the company. Quotes and policies are available online.

As you can see, offerings vary by provider. It can be helpful to compare multiple companies and the plans they offer to find what works best for you. It's even better if you gather several quotes to ensure you're getting a good price for your policy.
