The concealer-highlighter hybrid I wasn't expecting to love

Before I delve in, I have to address the unique and slightly ambiguous name. Banana Lowlighter isn’t exactly the easiest to break down the meaning of, but essentially it’s a hybrid concealer /highlighter used to brighten and attract light to specific areas of your face. We’ve all heard of highlighter, but lowlighter? That’s a new one to add to the glossary. I like to think of it as a highlighter's shy sibling, giving a softer illumination and light, flawless-looking coverage.

Rodial Banana Lowlighter

The ‘banana’ part essentially refers to the yellow undertone, but don’t panic: it’s way less intimidating than it sounds. If we’re wanting to get technical, yellow is ideal for neutralising purple tones in the skin, so especially effective when used under your eyes to cover dark circles and sallow patches. (I attempted to employ my Banana Lowlighter to cover a raging spot and safe to say I did not succeed).

It’s also packed with skincare ingredients targeted towards the delicate under-eye area: there’s hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture and reduce fine lines, and caffeine to shift puffiness, making you look your bright-eyed best.

Yellow undertones are generally used by experts to brighten fair complexions, while peach and orange undertones are more effective for darker skin. Thankfully, Rodial does also offer a Peach Lowlighter , which brightens deeper tones beautifully.

When wanting to achieve that ‘no makeup makeup’ look, I am always looking out for formulas that are slightly more sheer, and the Banana Lowlighter is just that. It truly is a versatile product: wear it under foundation , over the top, or simply on its own. I found the real magic happened when applying a light dose of the product, via the doe-foot wand, directly over moisturised skin or a radiant foundation. It truly delivered that ‘lit from within’ look. When I first had a go at swatching on the back of my hand, a slight iridescent sheen was detected, but after applying it to my face I can happily report that it offers nothing but radiance and an airbrush-esque finish.

In terms of tools, I initially went in with a beauty sponge, but I found simply patting the product in with my ring finger delivered a more seamless, natural-looking result. Trust me when I say a little goes a long way: three small dots, placed under the eye, is all you need.

But you don’t need to stop there: have a go at blending the product over the peaks of your cheekbones and along your nose to really attract light to those areas and help contour your face.

As someone who is no stranger to tired looking eyes, I have tested my fair share of concealers, yet none have surpassed Rodial’s genius formulation. The magic really lies in the yellow undertone, which neutralises purple pigments in your skin (the source of dark circles) rather than simply sitting over the top of them.

While the full-size Banana Lowlighter comes in at a reasonably sensible £38, anyone that's still sceptical should snap up the travel size which, at £22, is surely worth a go. How to apply.

Click to dispense product. Apply pea-sized drop using the brush tip applicator to tops of the cheekbones, bridge of nose, corners of the eyes, underneath the eyebrows and the cupids bow to provide a soft highlight to the skin. Apply to under eye circles to conceal and pat gently in with fingertip.

For dull/ de-energized complexions: Apply the banana lowlighter underneath the banana powder to colour-correct the complexion whilst leaving a flattering, warm undertone for a healthy, even appearance. By applying the banana powder on top of the lowlighter, this will help set the lowlighter in place.

Really brightens the under eye

I am 46 with dry under eyes and have always had problems with dark circles and fine lines - any product that settles in the lines is out. This one is really light coverage so I use it over a colour corrector and it really does brighten the whole area and makes me look more awake! I take it onto the eyelid too for extra brightening. Vitally it isn’t thick enough consistency to settle in lines.and isn’t drying. I have a love/hate relationship with under eye treatments and this is the first in a long time I’ll be buying again

It’s ok

This concealer is quite good. I probably wouldn’t buy again but all in all it was ok, just not for me. It is also slightly annoying how there is only one shade. Personally I just really didn’t like the texture and it didn’t really have much coverage. It didn’t crease or look cakey or anything like that. I still do reccomend this,

Disappointing

I heard so many good things about this product that I was excited to try it but sadly it just didn’t work for me. I didn’t like the texture and it nothing to conceal my dark circles and seemed to accentuate fine lines. I won’t be repurchasing and have already passed it onto a friend that will hopefully have better results.

I love this! The consistency is perfect for blending, it really brightens the under eyes and face giving the fresh faced look at the same time as its not a heavy concealer or too high coverage. Massively reduced the look of my dark circles and makes me feel a lot more confident.

Natural highlight

I’m olive toned and I absolutely love this product. I do like both the banana and peach toned ones. I use it under my eyes mainly when I want a lighter concealed day or mixed in with my concealer. I use Pat McGrath for the amazing coverage. It truly gives a natural highlight and even a colour correct. Formula is nice and creamy too.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).
