2023 Tata Safari Vs 7-seat SUV rivals: Specs, price comparison
The latest version of tata safari gets an overhauled exterior design and plenty of feature upgrades over the outgoing model..
Tata Motors recently launched the facelifted Safari with updated cosmetics and new features on board. The mid-size SUV goes up against the likes of Mahindra XUV700, Hyundai Alcazar, and MG Hector Plus, all of them offering three-row seating configurations. Let us find out how the updated Safari fares against its rivals.
2023 Tata Safari Vs 7-seat SUV rivals: Dimensions
The new Tata Safari measures 4668 mm in length, 1922 mm in width, and 1795 mm in height, with a wheelbase spanning 2741 mm. In comparison to its rivals,Safari is the widest, however, it also has the smallest wheelbase. The MG Hector Plus is the longest of the lot whereas Hyundai Alcazar offers the longest wheelbase at 2,760mm despite being the smallest overall among the current crop of SUVs.
2023 Tata Safari Vs 7-seat SUV rivals: Engine specs
Tata Safari is the only SUV among its rivals to be offered solely with a diesel engine with no petrol engine option on offer. Therefore, we shall only take the diesel engine options into consideration. The 2.0-litre oil burner offered in Safari is the same unit seen in Hector Plus, both of them sourced from Fiat . Hence, they share power and torque outputs.
The 2.2-litre unit powering XUV700 is the most powerful and torquiest in this segment. XUV700 is also the only model in this space to offer the option of an all-wheel-drive system. Alcazar gets the smallest diesel motor in this segment and as a result the 1.5-litre unit kicks out the lowest peak output among the current lot.
All diesel-powered SUVs in this space get a 6-speed manual transmission as standard with every model other than Hector Plus getting an optional 6-speed automatic transmission as well.
2023 Tata Safari Vs 7-seat SUV rivals: Price
Among the seven-seater mid-size SUVs, Safari offers the most affordable base variant at Rs 16.19 lakh, despite being a diesel-only offering. The Alcazar gets the most affordable top-spec variant at Rs 21.23 lakh. As far as pricing goes, XUV700 is the most premium 7-seater SUV in this space, however, prices for the top-spec Safari Dark Edition is yet to be revealed.

Tata has brought the Safari name back with its latest model, which is a seven-seat derivative of the Harrier. Unlike previous Safaris, which used ladder-frame chassis and traditional, rear-biased 4x4, the new one uses Land Rover's D8 platform (OmegaArc in Tata parlance) and is front-wheel-drive only. It's powered by a 170hp FCA-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine, which can be had with either a six-speed manual or six-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox.

The new Safari is attractive, plush and well equipped, and with a genuinely useable third row is it makes a compelling case for itself. Sure, it’s not a versatile 4x4 as the original Safari was but see it as the three-row SUV for the family that it is, and you’ll find that Tata’s new flagship scores where it matters.
Pros & Cons of Tata Safari
- Comfortable third row

When Tata announced that the updated Safari would arrive soon in the Indian market, we did not expect to see such a heavily updated product. The Safari came to the Indian market in 2021 and in only a short span of two years, Tata has added a long list of changes. We drove the car around for a few hours and this is how the new and updated Safari looks and drives like now.
Tata Safari looks bolder
Just like the Harrier, the Safari has gone through several changes that add a touch of modernity to the vehicle. And the best part is that the designers at Tata Motors have ensured that Safari simply does not look like an elongated version of the Harrier. There are changes to the front including the Safari monikers on the headlamp cluster.
Also read: 10 DC Design cars & how they look in the REAL world: Maruti Swift to Mahindra XUV500
The rear also gets similar updates to the Harrier but there are a few changes like the bumper and the ends of the tail lamp that make it look different compared to the five-seater. Safari, however, gets some super-looking alloy wheels. The 19-inch wheels are the production form of the same alloys that we saw on the Sierra concept.
Overall, the Safari looks the most futuristic among its competitors at the moment. But just like the Harrier, there are a lot of parts finished in gloss that might lose their shine over time. One of the solutions though is to apply PPF on such parts.
Updated cabin
Since the Harrier will have a younger target customer audience and is designed to be youthful, the Safari is likely to be the car for families. The cabin exudes premium abience with a thick wooden finish on the dashboard and a lighter-coloured cabin.
Then comes the tech-load. The Safari gets a massive 12.2-inch infotainment system in the middle and a 10.25-inch instrument cluster. These work the same as the Harrier and get the same features. You can watch the video or read the Harrier review to know more. There is a 10-speaker system from JBL and it does sound very premium. There are various modes as well that change the whole sound output.
Tata has updated the steering wheel with a four-spoke set-up and a digital logo just like the Harrier. All other updates like the capacitive climate control system and centre console are similarly designed as the Harrier. Tata has now added the new gear shifter with ride-by-wire tech, which we saw on the Nexon. It does feel very premium to use and there is a dedicated parking button that you can press to park the car without touching the gear shifter.
We only got the 6-seater pilot seat version of the Safari for the review. The rear seats also get a ventilation option like the front two seats and it is very useful. The pilot seats for the middle row ensure supreme comfort and also opens up a lot of space, which otherwise feels cluttered in the 7-seater version of the car. Also, the bench seat of the 7-seater version of the Safari is likely to feel cramped as there is a big transmission tunnel going through. The cabin does not feel claustrophobic though. There is a massive panoramic sunroof and even the light-coloured cabin makes sure that the space feels airy.
The last row of seats offers ample space too. There is enough space and there are climate control vents, a knob to control fan speed and also glass holders for the rear passengers. The adjustable headrests make it a little more comfortable for the last-row seat passengers as well.
The Safari is made for youngsters who want to keep their gadgets fully charged up all the time. There are as many as 10 charging points in the vehicle including a Type-C port for the last row passengers. Tata Safari also gets the 45W USB Type-C charging port that will be able to charge many laptops as well. Also Read: New Tata Safari vs Mahindra XUV700: Which One For Whom?
Driving around the Tata Safari
While nothing changed in the vehicle mechanically, Tata has updated the steering wheel of the vehicle. It now comes with Electric Power Steering, which means the outdated hydraulic system is not there anymore. The steering is light and nimble and allows you to move around the car with ease.
Everything else though remains the same. The suspension has been retuned according to the new weight. The bouncy ride of the Safari is now more controlled but it has not been eliminated. Yet, it feels very stable at high speeds. It is only when you take sharp turns, you may notice the body roll. It is not out of place though, all SUVs of this size face some amount of body roll.
The 2.0-litre engine generates a maximum power of 170 PS and a peak torque of 350 Nm. It is available with both 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission. We only drove the automatic transmission, for the manual transmission, you can read our Tata Harrier review.
Overall, the engine is quite powerful and suits the masculine outlook of the Safari. You can overtake easily and use cruise control to easily maintain the speed on the highways. The automatic transmission gets paddle shifters too. But they are not very quick to respond.
Safer than before
The platform of the Safari has not changed. But Tata has made the Safari safer than before with standard airbags across the variants. Even the base variant gets six airbags as standard while the top-end version gets 7 airbags.
There are ADAS features as well. But we could not test them in the heavy traffic situation of Pune. It did apply the autonomous emergency brake though. But that’s about it.
Should you buy it then?
The updated Safari is loaded to the brim when it comes to features. It also looks more futuristic compared to the Mahindra XUV700 and the Hector Plus. Other than that, there are a few typical Tata quality issues but in the past, Tata customers have overlooked such things and we believe that they will continue to do so in the future if it gets the right price tag. Tata will announce the prices of the new Safari on 17th October and we believe that as always, we will see an aggressive sticker price on the new Safari. Expert Review on Tata Safari
- Solid Road Presence
- Spacious And Comfortable Cabin
- Well-Specced With A Host Of Features
- Heavy Weight Is Quite Noticeable In Traffic
- Automatic Gearbox Could Be More Responsive
- Infotainment System Feels Not The Most Reliable
Like many Tata models the Safari also gets drive modes so you have City, Eco and Sport and yes there is perceptible difference between City and Sport for sure. But there is also a terrain response system a la Land Rover. Rough Road mode, Wet mode and then back to the default City drive mode.
Tata Safari
The Tata Safari carries the rich legacy of the original SUV that was a hit on Indian roads. The new Safari has been completely revamped and comes with more equipment and a whole new look and feel.
How’s the Design?
The Tata Safari has a front fascia that is almost similar to the Harrier. The split headlamp cluster is the same and there is a differentiated tri-arrow pattern for the front grille with chrome finishing. There is a third row of seats now and the roofline is also higher for the SUV along with a rear overhang which is longer. It also comes with a rear quarter glass that is full-sized and the tail-end is also very upright. The tail lights are different from the Harrier though. There are chunkier roof rails which are designed to indicate a stepped roof. The Safari is longer and taller while the wheelbase and width remain the same.
How does it perform?
The Tata Safari’s engine has high levels of refinement while there are Eco, City, and Sport driving modes. The engine offers a wide and punchy power band, while the Sport mode is the best for higher drivability. You can easily get the SUV up to higher speeds although there is some noise when you rev the engine hard. There are 6-speed manual and automatic transmission systems and the driving experience is also neat. The clutch is a little heavy if you are using the manual transmission unit. Slotting the gears will require a little more effort in turn. The automatic version comes with a unit from Hyundai and shifts smoothly engine. The Safari is responsive and agile enough.
How’s the mileage?
- Diesel Manual- 16.14 kmpl
- Diesel Automatic- 14.08 kmpl
How’s the driving experience?
The Tata Safari offers a mixed bag in terms of the driving experience and the ride. The steering feels heavier at lower speeds while higher speeds are not as comforting or balanced. However, the Safari is a good highway cruiser and offers more confidence and stability. The suspension system is more robust and is softer as well, leading to better absorption of bumps at lower speeds. The Safari can readily tackle bad roads, potholes and uneven stretches.
What’s the interior like?
The cabin is quite similar to the Harrier. The dashboard looks neat although the Oyster White interior theme is the stand-out feature here. There is also the electronic parking brake now. There is a great view from the driver’s seat with mostly high quality materials inside. The central console, however, may eat into the driver’s knee room. The 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment unit appears small inside the car. The quality of the rear view camera could also have been better. There is a lengthy feature list including the JBL audio system, panoramic sunroof, and the powered seat for the driver along with connected tech features. Wireless charging is unavailable though. The middle row has theatre-esque seating with a higher placement for the seats. Comfort is great and the overall experience is good enough, with the 60:40 sliding function. There is a Boss mode for adjusting the co-driver’s seat from the back itself. The top-end variant also gets a six-seater configuration with captain’s seats in the middle. These come with great cushioning and comfort, while offering several adjustments and a folding armrest. The rear windows however skip sun blinds and USB slots are hard to find when you venture near the central tunnel. The third row is accessible with the one-touch fold and tumble mechanism. Once you are in position, the space is not that bad. Adults will find decent legroom and the big windows create an airy feeling with blower control and two USB charging slots as well.
Tech and infotainment
The Tata Safari comes with its 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment system with connected car and remote tracking functions, a reverse camera, panoramic sunroof, USB charging slots, JBL audio system, powered driver’s seat, and a lot more.
Safety equipment
The Tata Safari comes with six airbags along with ABS, EBD, ESC, traction control, and brake assist. There are other features including fog lamps, parking sensors, and hill-descent control.
Which variant to buy?
You may check out the XT option if you are on a tighter budget. The XMA is the value pick from all the variants, while if you are okay paying more, then the XZA or XZ variants are par for the course. The XE variant has decent equipment at the entry level including good safety features, projector headlamps, remote central locking, power outlets, and more. The XM trim comes with the automatic transmission option, a 7 inch touch screen infotainment unit, driving modes and more. The XT gets more premium features including TPMS, automatic wipers and headlamps, rear view camera, 18-inch alloy wheels, LE3D DRLs, iRA connectivity suite, ambient lighting, and a lot more. It comes only in the manual guise. The XT offers a panoramic sunroof for an extra amount. The XZ comes with an automatic transmission system and is a value offering with more airbags and safety features, the 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment unit, 7 inch semi-digital instrument console, terrain response modes, JBL audio system, Xenon headlamps, and more. The XZ+ and XZA+ take it up a notch with captain’s chairs and the sunroof but are costlier. The XZ+ Adventure is more popular with buyers due to its interior changes.
Which cars compete in the segment?
The Tata Safari takes on the Mahindra XUV500 and the MG Hector Plus in its segment. It is the tallest and widest of the lot, while the MG Hector is the longest here. The Hector Plus has the biggest boot space while the Safari has the lowest volume. The Safari and Hector Plus both have more powerful diesel engines in terms of output. However, the torque output is the highest for the XUV500’s diesel engine. The Safari manages to hold its own in terms of features, design, handling, performance, and interior space.
Verdict (Value for Money)
The Tata Safari offers a spacious and comfortable last row of seats along with a rugged and durable vibe. It offers good performance, a refined engine, and a long list of features. The SUV’s design is also a head-turner on the road. However, the driving dynamics and heavy steering could be minor hindrances. If you talk about a muscular and attractive three-row SUV with good performance, then the Tata Safari certainly makes a strong case for itself.
Tata Safari Price List (Variant Wise)
Tata Safari Ex-Showroom price ranges from ₹ 15.49 to 27.34 Lakh. Tata offers Safari in 29 variants. The top variant of Safari is Accomplished Plus 6S Dark AT and the base variant is Smart.

The Tata Safari's on-road price varies depending on the location and the chosen variant, as it includes registration, insurance, and other charges.
The Tata Safari mileage is another aspect that appeals to buyers, balancing performance and fuel efficiency. The SUV is powered by a 2.0-liter diesel engine that delivers satisfactory mileage, making it suitable for both city driving and long road trips.
Tata Safari Storme and Tata Safari's old model hold a special place for those who follow the safari lineage. The Safari Storme was known for its rugged performance and off-road capabilities, while the older models laid the foundation for the SUV's reputation for reliability and durability. The new Safari builds on this legacy with modern advancements and improved features.
The Tata Safari XE variant offers a more affordable entry point into the Safari lineup, providing essential features and the same strong build quality as the higher trims. Additionally, the Tata Safari black edition is available for those who prefer a more striking and bold appearance.
Overall, the Tata Safari car is a versatile and reliable SUV that offers a compelling mix of comfort, technology, and performance. Tata Safari 2022-2023 Detailed Review
It is readily apparent that it is a Tata Harrier derivative, at least from the front. The only noticeable alteration is the new, chrome-finished tri-arrow motif for the Safari's grille. The split headlamp system is identical.
The Safari has a taller roofline, a longer rear overhang, a full-size rear quarter glass, and is also more upright in the back to enable a third row of seats. Even the taillights differ, although being treated similarly.
Safari smartly carries the template set by the Harrier making it look one of the better-looking vehicles in the Segment.
An 8.8-inch touchscreen entertainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability has been installed inside the automobile by Tata. Additionally, iRA connected car technology is added for remote smartphone connectivity.
The SUV also includes ambient lighting, a nine-speaker JBL sound system (Only for selected variants), a cooled glove box, and a seven-inch TFT colour display in the instrument cluster. The dashboard's layout is identical to that of the Harrier; however, its color has been modified. It is now oyster white with ashwood on top, with black. Also available in oyster white and black finishes are doorpads. Dark editions get all black interiors while the the Adventure edition gets a slightly brown interior. Kaziranga edition gets a dual tone leather upholstered interior.
Benecke-Kaliko oyster white perforated leather upholstery covers the seats. The interior of the Safari feels airy due to its white color scheme.
While the standard trims get white interiors, which may be a little difficult to maintain, Dark editions and Kaziranga editions do give the consumer an option of darker interior options.
The same 2.0L diesel engine that powers the Harrier, Compass, and Hector also powers the Safari. The "Kryotec170" motor is coupled to a 6-speed MT or AT and generates 168 BHP (at 3,750 rpm) and 350 Nm (at 1,750–2,500 rpm). The acceleration is swift enough, and there is always enough punch available. This SUV can travel long distances comfortably and is a capable vehicle.
FCA sourced diesel is a punchy and a relatively frugal unit for the segment. Not the best in terms of refinement though.
Safari 2022-2023 engine specifications:
The Safari has a semi-independent twist blade system with a panhard rod in the back and an independent McPherson strut front suspension with coil springs and an anti-roll bar. While the rear suspension has been modified by Lotus Engineering, UK, the front is fairly like the Land Rover Discovery Sport. The ride quality of the Safari is sophisticated with a hard edge. It is sufficient for city driving and will keep the Safari's passengers at ease.
Even at high speeds, straight line steadiness is quite good. The Safari is also not bouncy at high speeds, and freeway uphill and downhill undulations are rapidly recovered by the rear end. The chassis and 235 mm tires provide adequate grip. There is body roll, and you can sense the height and weight of the vehicle.
One of the better handling vehicles in the segment. Although the ride quality has gone down by a couple of notches when compared to its older namesake.
The Safari has curiously not yet been tested, despite Tata constantly being ready to tout the Global NCAP ratings of their vehicles. Given Tata's track record of success, it would be realistic to predict a rather high rating when the SUV is finally certified by the Global NCAP.
The multitude of safety features should also keep you safe in risky situations. The Safari comes standard with six airbags, an anti-lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution, an electronic stability program, disc brake wiping, hill hold control, rollover prevention, hill descent control, and traction control.
Lack of GNCAP may be a cause of concern to the discerning buyers. However, Tata has done well to give a host of Safety features.
