Slow the train down, though…because I get it…maybe you’re not crafty. I am with you. Sometimes I don’t like to make stuff. It’s ok.

Too much stuff to do or no energy to create–I. Get. It.

Necessary Materials to Make a Baby Shower Cake with a Jungle Theme:

Ok. So, if you’re like “nah, I’ll make one” I’m also with you–making a diaper cake doesn’t have to be hard. Just 20-ish minutes from start to finish, right?! So, to make a standard diaper cake, you just need a handful of things:

Diapers (obviously)
12-inch Cake Plate
Rubber Bands
You may also want a couple of receiving blankets, but they’re not necessary–you see plenty of diaper cakes without them.

To personalize my jungle diaper cake, I also grabbed a few little things to add that “final touch”.

A baby giraffe stuffie
Some baby lotion or shampoo
A cute onesie

Tips and Tricks to Make a Jungle Diaper Cake:

Because I’ve made a few diaper cakes in my time, I have a few tips for making them right the first time.

If you have leftover diapers, don’t panic! Just make a fourth tier for the diaper cake or toss them in a gift bag for the mom-to-be.
Lumpy sides on your diaper cake? No worries. Add a few rubber bands to tighten it all up. Or, wrap some ribbon snugly around the center of your diaper cake in order to hide the lumps.
Add a bit of loose tulle under your diaper cake to hide the cake plate.

Jut How Many Diapers Do You Need to Make a Diaper Cake?

Although it sounds like a lot of diapers, basically, to make a simple 3-tier diaper cake, you really don’t need to many. Here’s what I used:

1 Small Package Newborn Size Diapers – about 20
1 Large Package Size 1 Diapers – about 75

Jungle Themed Baby Shower Diaper Cake

Just a few minutes and you have the most fun little centerpiece for your jungle themed baby shower--a fun jungle baby shower diaper cake!

1 Small Package Newborn Size Diapers (about 20)
1 Medium Package Size 1 Diapers (about 75)
Graduated Cake Pans (size 6, 8 and 9 1/2)
12-inch Cake Board/Plate
12-24 Large Rubber Bands
1 Receiving Blanket
1 Baby Blanket
1 Giraffe Stuffed Animal for a Diaper Cake Topper
1 Cardboard Tube (paper towel roll), optional
2 Baby Socks, optional
3 Baby Onesies, optional
Hot Glue Gun & Glue
Tape, optional

Instructions

Remove the diapers from their packaging.
Stack the newborn sized diapers 3-4 at a time, fanning them out horizontally and forming a spiral, fit inside the smallest cake pan.
Fill the cake pan with the diapers completely, then wrap a rubber band around them, securing them in the shape of the pan.
Remove the cake pan and set aside the roll of diapers.
Repeat creating a roll of diapers using the size 1 diapers in both the second largest and largest cake pans.
Place the largest diaper roll on top of the cake board/plate. Optional: tape this in place--however, be aware that this could damage the diapers.
Wrap the baby blanket around the largest diaper roll, folding the blanket to only be as wide as the diapers are tall.
Wrap a rubber band around the baby blanket, securing it in place around the diaper roll.
Fan the tutu out on top of the largest diaper roll, spreading it out neatly.
Place the second largest diaper roll on top of the tutu.
Wrap the receiving blanket around the second largest diaper roll, folding the blanket to only be as wide as the diapers are tall.
Place the smallest diaper roll on top of the second largest.
Wrap the receiving blanket around the smallest diaper roll, folding the blanket to only be as wide as the diapers are tall.
Wrap a rubber band around the receiving blanket, securing it in place around the diaper roll.
To hide the rubber bands, wrap a ribbon around the diaper rolls, hot gluing or taping them in place. To avoid damaging a diaper, hot glue only ribbon-to-ribbon.
Add giraffe stuffed animal topper.
Hot glue paper roses onto the ribbons, stacking them carefully so as not to get the hot glue on the blankets or diapers.
Decorate as desired. I added a onesie hanging off the top tier, some baby gear and a couple of sock/onesie cupcakes. To make the sock/onesie cupcakes, just fold the onesies in half, then roll them up, with an inside-out sock in the middle. Then, when the onesie is rolled tightly, fold the sock up around the onesie to secure it in place.

How to Create a Safari Cake

I’ve been sharing my safari cake with you for the past couple of weeks. In my last post I explained how to bake jungle animal prints inside the cakes . Today I am going to talk about how I created some of the exterior elements. I’ll save the animal sculpting for next time but today I’ll talk about all the other pieces.

In case you forgot what the cake looked like as a whole, here it is:

The tree that topped my safari cake was created out of both modeling chocolate and rice krispy treats. When I made the RKT (rice krispy treats) I added some green food coloring to the melted marshmallows to turn the batch green.

When my supports were complete I wrapped a layer of rice krispy treats around the dowel to create the girth of the trunk. It is best to use RKT while they are still warm so they can be shaped and molded. If they cool too much you can stick them in the microwave for a few seconds to heat them back up. Also, once you shape them, you can stick them in the freezer to quickly firm the back up. I then covered the RKTs in a layer of brown modeling chocolate to finish the trunk.

The RKTs helped reduce some of the weight of the tree but it was still fairly heavy so when I placed it on the cake I inserted a couple of dowels into the cake, just underneath the trunk, as you would if you were adding an upper tier. This kept it from sinking into the cake as it sat.

The Number Topper

My niece was turning six and she was very proud of how old she had become so I wanted to make sure and announce her age somewhere on the cake. Since I was placing bamboo in other places around the cake I thought it would look neat to keep the bamboo look on the top and create a big “6” out of it.

Here is how it looked after brushing it with petal dust and adding some food coloring markings. See below for explanations on coloring the bamboo.

I placed it on some waxed paper, dusted with cornstarch, and let it dry for several days before I messed with it again.

Animal Prints

The animal prints really made this cake pop. I used a couple of different techniques to create the zebra and leopard prints on two separate cakes.

I finished the print by adding some additional small black spots in between the larger spots. Again, you want these to be shaky so be sure to wiggle your brush as you paint.

The bamboo was one of my favorite parts of the cake. I really loved the feel it gave to everything. When making the number 6 topper and the row of stalks around the base, I used gumpaste, but for the borders I just used fondant since I wanted to the cake to be easy to cut and I also wanted to bend it around the cake after coloring it and I was afraid gumpaste would dry too much and crack. It was definitely easier to mold and color the pieces that were made from the gumpaste, especially since the fondant ones tended to stretch and lose their shape a little as I unmolded them. They worked out just fine though since they were just borders and weren’t a real visible part of the cake.

I found some bamboo molds on Etsy and really loved them. The neat thing about these molds is that the seller also posted a Youtube video on how to use them and how to realistically color your bamboo. In the video she makes green bamboo but I wanted mine to be more yellowish so I did my coloring a bit different.

I finished them off by mixing some of the dark brown petal dust with some vodka and using a fine brush to paint a thin line on each segment. I also added some random markings along the length of the bamboo as you can see in the bottom bamboo piece in the picture.

When the base bamboo pieces had completely dried, I attached them to my baseboard (which is just a 2″ cake dummy covered in fondant) using melted chocolate.

The final thing I’ll talk about today is the jungle leaves on the sides of the cake.

Jungle leaves are much more jagged than rose leaves so I took a knife and cut additional pieces out of each leaf to give it a more rugged look. I then attached them to the cake with some water, placing larger leaves in the back and smaller ones in the front.

My favorite was the mound on the left side of the cake since I had the giraffe eating from them.

There! I’ve covered a whole bunch today and my brain is now fried from trying to remember everything. I hope it all makes sense. If you have any questions always feel free to post them in the comments and I will be happy to answer them.

Hi, How many days in advance do I need to make the animals? For the cakes, how many days before the party did you bake them? When you assembled the cake did you use dowles to support the cake? How did you transport the cake? Sorry for all the question. Thanks.

Hi Linda, The animals really just need to dry overnight before you need them but they take a while to make so you want to allow yourself enough time to make them. I usually like to make pieces like that the week before I need them so that I can just focus on the cake the week I am making it but that is just me. I am a slow worker and have limited time for working on cakes so I try to give myself plenty of time to get things done. If the cakes are for a Saturday party I will usually bake them on Tuesday or Wednesday and then spend the rest of the week decorating. Yes, I did use dowels. I used dowels for each tier and then I also used one long dowel that went through the center of all of them. I had a hole cut out in the bottom of the cake board of my top tier so that I could just slide that layer onto the main dowel and not put a hole in the top of my cake from it. It was really sturdy with the dowels so I transported it all assembled. I refrigerated it well the night before and then delivered it all assembled. I had to travel over an hour and the only problem I had was it was a hot day and my air conditioning went out in my car so the rice krispy treat on the tree started warming up and some of the leaves started to break off. Once I got up to where the party was located, in the mountains, it was cooler and I reformed the leaves and they stayed together for the party. I don’t recommend using chocolate or RKTs if your cake will be in a warm environment since they tend to melt. In that case I would use fondant or gumpaste. Oh, one more tip, if you refrigerate your cake with the chocolate pieces on it make sure to cover the chocolate pieces with some plastic wrap then allow the cake to come back to room temp before removing the plastic wrap. This prevents condensation from forming on the pieces. Hope that helps.

When you use paste food coloring and thin with vodka, does it dry to the touch?

Hi Stephanie, I am so sorry but I am just now seeing this question. There were a few weeks where I wasn’t notified of questions that were posted so I missed several of them. I am so sorry. I am doing some back checking right now and just discovered this. Anyway, to answer your question, it doesn’t get totally dry to the touch. It dries but still stays a little tacky. When I was placing the giraffe tier on the bottom tier I had to be careful so that I wouldn’t smear the print.

I am learning how to make figures, and I started with the elephant. He is coming along just fine. I have him almost finished. I am really enjoying this. I love the animals, and they are not really hard if looking at the pictures as you go. I checked myself with each instruction and tried to match everything. You did not talk anything about the size of these figures. Do you do a specific size for the animals?

Hi Mary, The sizes are really up to you and how tall your cakes are and how big you want your animals to be. My cakes are usually around 5″ tall after covered in fondant so I would guess my animals were somewhere between 3 /12 – 4 inches tall. It has been a while since I made this cake so I don’t recall exactly.

Great instructional post! I just made the leopard print cakes tonight (they’re still in the oven, so fingers crossed they come out right!) I tried to judge taking a third out of my second batch of yellow cake, and still ended up with not enough yellow, so I ended up running out to the store mid-process. I had originally used Duncan Hines yellow cake mix, but the drugstore where I bought my emergency third box of cake mix only sold Betty Crocker. It seemed like the Betty Crocker mix was thicker than the Duncan Hines. I might just try a pound cake recipe next time, as that batter is already super thick. I feel like light and dark brown chocolate batters were a good thickness, but the plain yellow batter was still too thin.

I just came upon your tutorial on How to create a safari cake. Your cake is absolutely gorgeous. I realize that you posted this 2 years ago, but I am hoping you can answer a few questions. I am a beginner. I have never made a tiered cake before. Do the second and third tiers sit right on the lower cake or is there one of those cardboard plates underneath. I don’t like the taste of fondant so I won’t be using it. That is why I wanted to try modeling chocolate for the animals. I want to keep everything edible. I will be frosting the cakes with buttercream icing. Is there any way I can paint on those leopard spots if I let the icing dry. Why do you thin the food coloring? And why with Vodka? Would it work if I used petal dust? And what about the zebra stripes. I will definitely be trying the animal prints on the inside of the cake. Even if they don’t turn out right, they will still be edible. What a great idea. I’m really excited about trying all these new techniques. Thank you so much for sharing your ideas and talent with everyone.

Hi Danielle, Whenever you stack tiered cakes you need both cake boards and dowels to support the upper tiers. You can do a search for tutorials on how to stack tiered cakes and that will give you all the info on how to do it and how many dowels you need for the size cake and all that. As for painting on buttercream, I have never done it but I have read that it can be done. I would make sure you use a buttercream that is either a crusting buttercream or one that has lots of butter in it and make sure it is well chilled so the butter gets very hard. I thin the food coloring because it is to clumpy as is. I use vodka or ever clear because they have high alcohol contents and evaporate quickly so that you aren’t adding water on to the cake and causing it to run. I don’t see why you couldn’t use petal dust as well. As for the zebra stripes, you might consider using fondant just for these. Ice your cake in white buttercream but then roll out thin strips of black fondant and cut out the stripes and lay them on the cake. They can easily be lifted off if you don’t want to eat them. Making a rainforest cake for my grandsons birthday and want a freestanding tree beside the cake. Do you think , since your tree is so “thick” and if I made it from gumpaste, that it would stand on its own?

Hi Gina. It might be ok because it is so thick. I would probably be a little nervous myself though just because it is also tall and could end up being top heavy. I think it will have to be your call if you want to try it. I don’t know that I would be comfortable leaving it free standing myself, but I also tend to err on the side of caution. Good luck to you!

Hi Lisa. Thank you for the compliment! I stacked them just like I would a center stacked cake but I positioned everything toward the back of each cake so the dowel rods are inserted evenly over the area that the top cake will set on. I also add one long dowel rod that goes through all three of them. I hope that makes sense. Happy Baking!

Swinging Into A Great Safari Adventure Diaper Cake

Looking for a super cute baby shower idea or a sweet unique gift? This diaper cake is not only too cute but oh so practical. I remember being a new mom and thinking how can someone so little go through so many diapers in a day? The momma to be in your life will so appreciate you for this gift! You can make this too! I will explain exactly how! I will also have a complete supply list at the end.

First step is to purchase cake circles. I purchased these at Walmart in the “Cake” decorating isle. You can also get at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc. You will need a pack that has numerous sizes in it. In this next picture are the sizes that I used for this safari cake.

You will need one 12 inch, one 10 inch and one 8 inch circle. The perforated holes in the center of them are great because it will be your guide to work from the center out. More on that in a little bit.

You will need a cardboard tube of some kind. I used was an empty wrapping paper roll. Once you have your roll then determine how high you want your cake. If you want to add another layer than this is where you will determine a fourth cake circle. I did not cut my wrapping paper tube until the very end to make sure I had enough left to attach the giraffe.

You will notice a black and white polka-dotted platter. This is actually a lazy susan that I found in the dollar spot at Target a while back. This helps so much in turning your cake as you place the diapers around. Any lazy susan will do or if you don’t have one, then work in a space you can walk around the cake. You won’t be able to move your circles without the diapers falling off. I used Pampers size small with a count of 96 diapers to make this cake and yes I used all 96.

Begin by rolling each diaper with the open side (the waist part), you will end with the closed side out (the butt part).

Small hair rubber bands are used to hold the diaper rolls. You can also use small regular rubber bands. These will be removed once all the diapers are tied together. Place a rubber band around the top of the rolled diaper. Continue this process until all diapers are rolled.

Cut the center of both your 10 inch and 8 inch cake circles the same size circumference of your tube. I used a box cutter to cut the circumference. I laid the tube onto the back of the cake circle and I traced it with a pencil.

Remember this will be hidden so it doesn’t have to be perfect just don’t make it too big. This will allow those circles to slide onto the tube and lay on top of the layers of diapers.

Time to hot glue the wrapping paper roll to the bottom cake circle. Make sure you use a high temperature glue gun so that it sticks well. This is the support of the cake.

My favorite glue gun is the RYOBI glue gun. I don’t think I could do without it and I use it for all my creations. I have a link to Amazon in My Must Have Products here on my blog if you want to see one or want to learn more about it.

Once the glue is dry on your tube and bottom layer, begin by placing the rolled diapers on the bottom layer of the cake circle. When full, cut a piece of the “skinny” ribbon and wrap it around all of the diapers, making sure to get it tight but not so tight that it flares the diapers out. Once you have it tied you can always add more diapers to the layer. Remove the rubber band or hair ties from the diapers. Place the 10 inch cake circle on to the tube and repeat layering your diapers and tie them off with the skinny ribbon. Then place the 8 inch circle and repeat the steps.

Here is where the decorating starts. I chose to place burlap ribbon around each layer of the cake. Do not remove the skinny ribbon. I used a safety pin to hold the ribbon in place. Remember you want your new momma to use all the diapers so no hot glue on the ribbon.

Next is this green wired ribbon that was placed over the burlap ribbon. This created a layered look which is so cute. I used this same ribbon for the top layer bow.

Now to determine the placement for the giraffe. Use any safari animal you chose but the giraffe was chosen due to it being one of the animals in this adorable party print set. If you would like to have this complete print set, here is the name of the shop on Etsy. It’s called the Strawberry Party Print store. She sells the digital download and its super easy, just purchase, print and cut out. I do not know this shop owner accept for the purchase of these but she does have adorable items and I wanted to give her credit for such cute work.

If you notice in this picture the sweet giraffe’s legs are crossed. This is how I hid the tube by using a couple of safety pins. I also used this vine ribbon from Hobby Lobby that was just perfect for the theme.

To attach the leaves, Welcome Baby and other animal prints, I used 6 inch food skewers. Just hot glue the prints onto the skewers and poke between the diapers. Remember these diapers are to be used so they can not be attached with hot glue. If the skewers are a little long then just cut with scissors or with wire cutters.

Next the vine ribbon was placed as to look like it was “growing” on the cake. That’s it!

The time to make this was about an hour but so affordable and cute!

How to Make Safari / Jungle Animals Fondant Cupcake Toppers – Tiger, Zebra, Giraffe, Elephant, Monkey, Hippo, Bear, Lion

Teddy Bear Fondant Cake Topper

Ingredients

Walnut Cake:

For a 10.5 inch (26.7 cm) round pan:

45 ml water (8 Tbsp)
150 g flour
240 g sugar
4 Tbsp ground walnuts

Double the ingredients to make two 10-inch cakes.

For a 7 inch (17.7 cm) round pan:

28 ml water (5 Tbsp)
100 g flour
150 g sugar
2.5 Tbsp ground walnuts

Double the ingredients to make two 7-inch cakes.

Sugar Syrup to Moisten the Cake :

400 ml water
10 Tbsp sugar
6 Tbsp rum extract

Whipped Chocolate Ganache Filling :

600 g dark chocolate (baking or couverture chocolate)
1.2 l whipping cream
200 g ground walnuts

Covering the Cake:

5 lbs green fondant ( 2.3 kg)
1 lb white fondant + yellow, orange, brown, dark green and black gel food colouring for the fondant decorations; or you can buy fondant already coloured in those colours

Other Tools/Items:

10 inch & 7 inch cake boards
4 Boba plastic straws or cake dowels
Leaf fondant cutter
Flower plunger cutter
Tree bark fondant impression mat
Upper Case Funky Alphabet and Number Tappit Cutters
Lower Case Funky Alphabet Tappit Cutters Set
Set of 3 Sugar Paste Narrow Leaf Cutters
1.5’’ flower cookie cutter
1’’ circle cutter
1 Wilton/Ateco round decorating tip #8
A small paint brush

Making the Cake

Use the ingredients listed above and follow the step-by-step instructions in this other post to make your 4 cakes.

Bake the cakes, let them cool off and cut each of them horizontally in two.

Make your sugar syrup by boiling the water with the sugar and adding the vanilla extract at the end. Let it cool off.

Making the Filling

Make the whipped chocolate ganache following the steps in this recipe. Make this at least a 8 hours before you are ready to assemble the cake as it needs to cool off in the fridge before whipping it.

Set aside 200 g of the whipped ganache to crumb coat the cake before covering it with fondant.

Then, add the ground walnuts to the remaining whipped ganache and fold them in with a spatula.

Assembling and Decorating the Cake

Assembling the cake.

Spread some filling on your 10’’ cake board and place the first cake layer on top. Moisten it with sugar syrup and spread whipped chocolate ganache filling on top (~300 g of ganache per layer). Repeat the steps for the 2nd and 3rd cake layers. Lastly, place the 4th cake layer on top and moisten it with sugar syrup.

Repeat the steps for the 7’’ cake. You should spread ~ 200g whipped ganache per cake layer.

Crumb coat the cakes with a thin layer of the ganache you saved. Refrigerate them for 1-2 hours.

Covering the Cakes with Fondant

Knead and roll 2/3 of your green fondant to cover the 10’’ inch cake.

Before rolling out your fondant, sprinkle some powdered sugar or cornstarch on your work surface and knead it until it has a workable consistency and it doesn’t feel and look dry.

Use a measuring tape or a piece of string to measure the top and sides of the cake. So if you measured 10’’ across the top and your cake is 4’’ tall that is 18’’ of cake in total so you need to roll out the fondant at least 20 inches in diameter but you should leave an inch or two extra. Sprinkle some powdered sugar onto your work surface and roll out the green fondant in the approximate shape of your cake (i.e. circle for a round cake). As you are rolling it make sure you lift the fondant occasionally and rotate it 45 degrees to make sure it doesn’t stick to your work surface. If it sticks lift the fondant and sprinkle more powdered sugar or cornstarch.

Gently lift fondant over rolling pin and place it on the side of the cake. Start unrolling the fondant from the side of the cake and across the top to the other side.

Smooth the fondant with a fondant smoother (or the palm of your hand) starting from the top. Start to gently pull the fondant out and down around the sides of the cake using one hand and spread the excess fondant and smooth it out using a fondant smoother (or your other hand).

Keep turning the cake and repeating these steps until the sides are smooth and without any ruffles formed towards the bottom. It’s better if you use a fondant smoother since the pressure of your hands could leave marks and the warmth from your hands might make the fondant sticky.

Use your fondant smoother to get rid of any wrinkles and air bubbles as well. If you see any air bubbles, insert a pin on an angle, release the air and smooth the area again.

Trim the edges at the bottom using an X-Acto knife , a pizza cutter or any other sharp knife you have.

Repeat the same steps to cover the 7’’ cake and place it on the 7’’ cake board.

Cut 4 boba straws or cake dowels to the height of the 10’’ cake and insert them into the cake.

Spread another bit of frosting on top and place the 7’’ cake on top.

Making the Fondant Decorations

Sprinkle some powdered sugar or cornstarch on your work surface and roll out the brown fondant. Gently press the tree bark fondant impression mat onto the fondant to give it the wood effect.

Cut a 3.5’’ x 4.5’’ square to make the wooden sign post. Then, cut a thin 1’’ x 6’’ strip to make the post. Lastly, cut two thin strips for the top and bottom edges of the sign.

Assemble the sign post by using a bit of water to glue everything together.

Use the tappit cutter to make the number 1 and attach it to your sign.

Make the leaves for the palm trees using the leaf cutters and the dark green fondant. Then, for the tree trunk, roll a log out of brown fondant and make some indentations using the back of a knife blade or the blunt knife fondant tool.

Make the elephant, giraffe and lion as shown in the pictures below.

Attach all the fondant decorations to the cake using some water.

Use the Upper Case Tappit Cutters and Lower Case Funky Alphabet Tappit Cutters to make the letters of your kid’s name out of yellow fondant. Use the flower plunger cutter to make the small flowers out of white fondant.

Paint the bear paws on the cake using brown food colouring mixed with a few drops of vodka or water.

I made a 5’’ Smash Cake following the same recipes and steps above. You just need to reduce the ingredients – e.g. make each cake out of 4 eggs, use about 300 g of whipped ganache filling.

"Darling I wish you the best I can - that your anxiety will be at an end before you get this - with the best news," he wrote to Ruth Mallory on May 27, 1924 from Camp I. "It is 50 to 1 against us but we'll have a whack yet & do ourselves proud."

It remains a mystery whether Mallory, who once famously said he wanted to conquer Everest "because it's there," and climbing partner Andrew Irvine reached the summit and died on the way down or never made it that far. Mallory's body was found 75 years later far below the peak, but Irvine's has never been located.

A BBC World Service news report from May 4, 1999 stated: "An expedition to Mount Everest has found the body of the famous British climber, George Mallory, who disappeared 75 years ago a short distance from the summit. The team said they spotted the corpse protruding from the snow about 600m below the top of Everest. Mallory's name tag was on the clothing and a rope was still round his waist."

The first documented ascent came nearly three decades later when New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay scaled the mountain on May 29, 1953. In 1963, Jim Whittaker became the first American to reach the summit. "There was no feeling of exhilaration, no feeling of 'Boy, we pulled it off.' We were just hanging on to life," Whittaker told CBS News on the 50th anniversary of his ascent. "And I knew we were out of oxygen. You're in the death zone. If you don't get down, you die."

Magdalene College posted Mallory's letters online to mark the centenary of his ill-fated attempt to stand atop the world. The collection, which had previously been available to researchers, also includes letters he wrote from the battlefront in World War I and correspondence he received from others, including his wife.

The only surviving letter his wife wrote from England during the expedition was sent as his party sailed toward Bombay. It recounts a recent snowstorm, how her bank account was overdrawn and how she fell off a ladder before telling him how much she missed him.

"I know I have rather often been cross and not nice and I am very sorry but the bottom reason has nearly always been because I was unhappy at getting so little of you," Ruth Mallory wrote on March 3, 1924. "I know it is pretty stupid to spoil the times I do have you for those when I don't."

In his final six-page correspondence to his wife, addressed to "My dearest Ruth," George Mallory speaks of trials and triumphs as the party slowly made its way up the mountain, setting up higher camps and then retreating to lower elevation to recover.

"This has been a bad time altogether," Mallory wrote 12 days before he was last seen alive. "I look back on tremendous efforts & exhaustion & dismal looking out of a tent door and onto a world of snow & vanishing hopes - & yet, & yet, & yet there have been a good many things to set on the other side."

Mallory said he had a nagging cough "fit to tear one's guts" that left him sleepless and made climbing difficult. He described a near-death plunge into a crevasse when he failed to detect it beneath a blanket of snow.

"In I went with the snow tumbling all around me, down luckily only about 10 feet before I fetched up half-blind & breathless to find myself most precariously supported only by my ice ax somehow caught across the crevasse & still held in my right hand," he said. "Below was a very unpleasant black hole."

Mallory said only one member of the party remained "plum fit" and they planned to rest up for two days before pushing for the summit, which was expected to take six days.

Mallory and Irvine were last seen alive June 8, 1924 when they were said to be still going strong some 900 feet beneath the 29,035 feet summit. Mallory's body was found at 26,700 feet.

A group of mountaineers who tried in 2007 to reconstruct Mallory's ascent were unable to determine if the pair made it to the top.

"I still believe the possibility is there they made it to the top, but it is very unlikely," said Conrad Anker, who participated in a documentary recreating the climb and who had discovered Mallory's body in 1999.

"It has been a real pleasure to work with these letters," said Magdalene College archivist Katy Green in a statement . "Whether it's George's wife Ruth writing about how she was posting him plum cakes and a grapefruit to the trenches - he said the grapefruit wasn't ripe enough - or whether it's his poignant last letter where he says the chances of scaling Everest are '50-to-one against us', they offer a fascinating insight into the life of this famous Magdalene alumnus."

In Mallory's final letter to his wife, he says, "the candle is burning out & I must stop." He signs off: "Great love to you. Ever your loving, George."
