The Scorpions (formed in 1969) is a German hard rock and heavy metal band, known for their hit singles “Rock You Like a Hurricane” and “Wind of Change”, hailing from Hannover, West Germany.

In 1969 guitarist and vocalist Rudolf Schenker formed the Scorpions alongside lead guitarist Karl-Heinz Folder, bassist Lothar Heimberg and drummer Wolfgang Dziony. A couple years later with little progress being made Schenker’s younger brother Michael joined the band along with good friend and frontman Klaus Meine who both recorded on their 1972 album “Lonesome Crow”. Michael Schenker soon got noticed by an early incarnation of the rock band UFO who hired him as their lead guitarist.

Uli Jon Roth replaced Schenker and contributed to the four albums “Fly to the Rainbow” in 1974, “In Trance” in 1975, “Virgin Killer” in 1976 and “Taken by Force” in 1977. By this point the band were becoming popular in Japan but by no means in the U.S. and in 1978 Roth left the group to form Electric Sun and Schenker returned after being kicked out of UFO for alcoholism.

Having signed to Mercury Records the Scorpions released “Lovedrive” in 1979 before undergoing significant line-up changes. Matthias Jabs came in on lead, Francis Buchholz came in on bass and Herman Rarebell on drums. The band’s next release “Animal Magnetism” surprised a lot of people going gold in the U.S. and represented a popularity shift in the States, with this news the Scorpions immediately returned to the studio to cash in on their newfound appeal.

In 1982, despite rumours Meine had been kick out of the group for broken vocal chords, the Scorpions released the “Blackout”. The album sold over a million copies in the U.S. alone and featured the hit single “No One Like You”. It was however the powerful follow-up “Love at First Sting” in 1984 that really gave the band their superstar status. Led by the huge MTV single “Rock You Like a Hurricane”, the album has since been certified double-platinum and increased the band’s popularity and concert scope.

After a long-winded two-year hiatus, the Scorpions returned in 1988 to release their tenth studio album “Savage Amusement” which featured the hit “Rhythm of Love”. The band subsequently released “Crazy World” in 1990 which proved the be the Scorpions’ biggest-seeing record to date led by the uber-popular “Wind of Change”.

With the influx of alternative rock to the ‘90s the Scorpions’ hard-rock appeal began to dwindle and in 1993 with the release of “Face the Heat” the band had lost a number of fans. The Scorpions followed the release up with the live album “Live Bites” in 1995, “Pure Instinct: in 1996 and the double CD greatest hits album “Deadly Sting: The Mercury Years” in 1997.

The band securely put on their experimentation hats for 1999’s “Eye II Eye” which featured pop and techno melodies, and invited the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra to play and perform a number of Scorpion classic hits with the 2000 album “Moment of Glory”. The Scorpions have subsequently released their fifteenth studio album “Unbreakable” in 2004, “Humanity: Hour 1” in 2007, “Sting in the Tail” in 2010 and the greatest hits album “Comeblack” in 2011.

Live reviews

The band was exceptional, the lights magical, sound a bit of a problem at the beginning, but grew better towards the end of the show, especially when singing their older songs.

The Athens State Orchestra did not manage to see, except the last song - the one with Shenker - as I was entering the stadium, because, even though I had the most expensive VIP ticket (with numbered seat), I - among most of the crowd - could not enter, since there where NO lines, NOONE from the production company, NO security to help and guide us. As a result, the concert began as sceduled, at 21:00 sharp ad all of us were outside trying - I got pushed over, squeezed etc - to get in. Because of that - the entrance delay - they did not check our tickets (nobody was at the gates any way) so whoever wanted to enter the stadium - with NO ticket - could by all means enter. When entered the stadium there were AGAIN nobody to escort or show us to our seats, with limited lighting, and when we FINALLY found our seats there were people seating already refusing to get up - since they told us that people from the organisation told them to seat WHEREVER they wished, since there was no time to seat them and obviously without entry control we were outnumbered - and spend about 30 minutes trying to convince them for the obvious: to get up and let us seat on our NUMBERED seats, while searching for SOMEONE from the production company to assist. The stairs were full of people (this is against safety policy) and I managed to get down to arena after stepping on hands (it was dark as I mentioned earlier) to find someone in charge....NOONE, only one security guy who wasn't authorised to help with the situation and finally a "staff" who told me that he was a driver and would try to find someone to assist. They had NO CBs to intercommunicate and were running up and down to find whomever they were searching for. Finally, the paramedics, also had NO CBs and as we saw a girl in distress form above we were trying to communicate through signals that they should speed to the spot. The production company - I've never heard of them in Greece - are plain potential murderers.

The Scorpions are another band that is completely iconic to my growing up for as long as I can recall. Their thoughtful, leading guitars and unique vocals that demand the listener's attention taught me a lot. I love the fact that where I love the professional sports teams use a number of their songs to pump up the crowd and the team. I don't know how anyone could go wrong listening to the Scorpions.

I had a chance to hear them up here in Philadelphia a couple of years ago. I have to say, all though they're definitely aging, they can still rock the house like they did 30 years ago. They played some songs people didn't recognize but still got them to move to anyway. The Scorpions still have that unique sound, with the demanding vocals and thought provoking lyrics.

After all these years, people of all ages and types were seriously listening and becoming involved in the music that the Scorpions were producing, and it was a sight to behold. On the whole, it was like part of the audience was surprised that the people on the stage were the same ones that were capturing them with their music. Definitely a must see.

I sold my tickets because Five Points amphitheatre is the worst venue I have ever been to. The only time I have enjoyed a show there is when buying VIP front and Center seats and even then there security is the worst. Last show the people I knew from the meet and greet with Foreigner spent between 900 and 2000 for a paid of tickets yet when I walked down to the stage Indis not get stopped once and asked for my ticket. I learned against the rail against the stage with the aisle behind me and never was told to leave the area and neither was anyone who paid $49 for baxkrow seats. When you sit in the upper section, meaning 300's, there is no security, the seats are temporary, and its a bit more cramped then the airlines. Of someone moves, the entire section moves, and the entire row has to clear the row because it is impossible to get buy. Of anything happens in the upper sections, which is very possible seeing that everytime you get to your seat you have to ask someone who doesnt belong there to move. And when I sat 2nd row, I had at least 10 different neighbors from people climbing over the seats. With such

Where do I start? The Scorpions concert at Blue Hills Bank Pavilion was amazing. The day was dreary, wet and cold. Some of the excitement that had been building about the concert was waning. It was just a miserable day. The opening act didn't really do anything for my enthusiasm. I just couldn't shake the weather blues. Then the Scorpions took the stage.

Immediately, they filled the air with electricity; the energy on stage was like a contagion. I was excited, the people around me were excited. We forgot all about the crappy weather. They played a good mix of old and new, head banging and acoustic. They made the whole experience very intimate and personal. By the end of the show, I really felt we got our money's worth; then The Scorpions came back for an encore! I feel bad for the folks that took off at the end of the set. They missed out on some heartfelt and enduring classics. Those last two songs took the night from fantastic to mind blowingly awesome. I can't say enough about how great this show was. The guys were happy, energetic and generous. Best show I have ever seen.

Scorpions, the German hard rock band currently consisting of Rudolf Schenker, Klaus Meine, Matthias Jabs, James Kottak and Paweł Mąciwoda have a cult like reputation globally for their music and live show. Having formed fifty years ago, the band still has the ability to rock and out and entertain a crowd with ease.

Despite their age, the musical ability that the band members possess is applaudable. From the blistering introduction to 'All Night Long', the group are ready to rock and the audience are ready to cheer. Lead singer Klaus Meine has great abilities as a frontman, swaggering around the stage like a man half his age with his guitar in hand ready to create frenzy as he teases the introduction to fan favourites such as 'Coming Home' and 'The Zoo'.

Although their biggest international hit 'Wind Of Change' is devoid from the set, the audience don't even seem to notice as the band keep them energised with huge renditions of 'Big City Nights'. Scorpions are a great live act with a solid show and an understanding of the fundamentals of rock.

The scorpions can still rock! Surprisingly Klause can still sing great and hit those notes! He does not move around much but who can blame him...hard to believe he is 69. They did all the expected tunes..No one LIke You, the Zoo, and some "newer" ones like Rock and Roll Bang, Going Out with a Bang, etc. Guitar playing by Jabs and Rudolf was exceptional...Rudolf was still his entertaining self. Rock you Like a Hurricane was one of the encores and really got people rocking. Highlights for me were the slower songs where the crowd sang loudly such as WInd of Change, and Send me an Angel. Go see them as you never know if there will be another chance. Megadeath was the unusually chosen opening act and more of a trash metal band...not my "cup of tea" but I actually liked them. They changed the demographic of the audience a bit.

The Scorpions blew the cobwebs out of the Grand Ole Opry House on Monday night! They put on a great show and rocked it! For guys celebrating 50 years as a band (which means they've got to be close to 70, if not older), they put much younger musicians to shame! Klaus still sounds awesome, the guitars were shredding, and the drums were pounding!I would see them again in a heartbeat!!

Queensryche was also great although they didn't do an encore for some reason so I didn't get to hear "Silent Lucidity" which is one that I particularly wanted to hear.

Overall a great night and I can now check seeing the Scorpions live off of my "bucket list"!

I had the honor of seeing the Scorpions almost two years ago at the Staples center in Los Angeles....All I can say is WOW! They were without a doubt the best band live I have ever seen and I go to a lot of concerts! If you are lucky enough to see them live today you are truly blessed. I have been lucky enough to see and hear some of the best artist in the world and this concert was the best I have ever witnessed. Just to put some perspective to my statements... the second best concert was U2 a month after 9-11. If they come back to los Angeles I will be there no matter what the cost is.....They are just that great!

sharkbyt’s profile image

The show of the concert was great, but we didn't really see the collusion of the band with the symphonic orchestra. The orchestra came, played their part, and after that we never saw them again. The sould could be better. The legendary Scorpions gave it all though. They made as feel good and they carried as away!

The organization was not good. Two small entrances for sooo many people. That lead to huge queues. I felt there was not so much security, during the check of the tickets.

It was great seeing Kallimarmaro full, from people who came to enjoy Scorpions!

Great experience. Could be much better.

Scorpions Announce 2022 North American Tour with Whitesnake

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The post Scorpions Announce 2022 North American Tour with Whitesnake appeared first on Consequence .

Scorpions have announced a 2022 North American tour in support of their latest album, Rock Believer . Joining the legendary German band on the two-month trek will be fellow veteran rockers Whitesnake , who will be on their farewell outing.

The late summer / early fall “Rock Believer Tour” kicks off August 21st in Toronto, Canada, and runs through an October 21st show in Las Vegas. Tickets go on sale to the general public this Friday, May 13th at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster , with a Live Nation pre-sale beginning Thursday, May 12th (use code FINALE ).

“After the amazing start we’ve had with our residency in Las Vegas, it‘s about time to come back for a real tour to rock the US like a hurricane again,” said Scorpions singer Klaus Meine, borrowing a line from one of the band’s most famous songs. “We can‘t wait to see all you Rock Believers out there!”

Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale added, “Once again it’s time to feel the sting of the Scorpions & the bite of the Whitesnake!!! Can’t Wait!!!”

Scorpions released their 19th album, Rock Believer , in February of the year, which marked the band’s first LP in seven years. It’s also the first album to feature current drummer Mikkey Dee , the Motörhead veteran who joined Scorpions in 2016, following the passing of Lemmy Kilmister.

Coverdale, who turned 70 this past September, previously announced that Whitesnake’s upcoming tour would be their last. The band kicks off its final outing on Tuesday night (May 10th) with a European run before linking up with Scorpions for the North American run.

“We have this farewell tour, and when I say that I’m retiring, I’m retiring from touring at this level. It’s so huge and it takes months and months and months to set up,” said Coverdale back in November. “I was hoping, actually, to retire at 69, which is absolutely the best age for the lead singer of Whitesnake to step down.”

Swedish band Thundermother will serve as opening act for the entire tour. See the full list of dates and the tour poster below, and pick up tickets here .

7 Scorpions in Texas To Watch Out For

scorpions tour in texas

Scorpions are arachnids, which are close relatives of spiders, and can be easily recognized by their curling stinger and large pincers in most cases. They prefer dryland habitats, but there are many species of scorpions in Texas that you can encounter. Before you worry about being stung by these fascinating animals, there are no lethal scorpions in Texas and they will only sting when disturbed. Scorpions are most easily found at night using a blacklight, as they’re the only arachnids that fluoresce under ultraviolet light.

7 Species of Scorpions in Texas

There are at least 20 known species of scorpions in Texas. In this article we’ll take a look at seven of those and talk a bit about each one. Scorpions are classified as arachnids and have exoskeletons to protect them along with their dangerous stingers.

1. Striped Bark Scorpion

scorpions tour in texas

  • Scientific name:  Centruoides vittatus
  • Size: 2.76 inches
  • Venomous: Yes, but moderate

The Striped Bark Scorpion is the only species that occurs throughout all of Texas, and is the most common species in Central Texas. They’re capable of stinging, but the sting itself only causes moderate reactions in most people. It’s usually sufficient to apply ice packs on the area where the sting occurred, but it’s important to make sure an allergic reaction doesn’t manifest.

Striped Bark Scorpions are nocturnal, preferring to remain sheltered during the daytime in order to regulate temperature and water balance. Their bodies are covered with a waxy cuticle to also help reduce water loss, and for reasons as yet unknown, this cuticle lights up blue under a blacklight. They’re the most commonly seen scorpion in Texas, and the most likely to encounter within your own home.

2. Texas Cave Scorpion

scorpions tour in texas

  • Scientific name:  Pseudouroctonus reddelli
  • Size: 40-60 mm
  • Venomous: Yes

The Texas Cave Scorpion, as the name implies, is found in and around caves. This is a venomous scorpion, but it’s said that it’s more similar to a bee sting and not of much concern. They can be found occasionally in homes next to natural areas, as they seek out cave-like environments, but they’re more likely to nestle under wood piles.

The Texas Cave Scorpion is a patient and opportunistic predator, feeding primarily on cave crickets. This is the only other scorpion other than the bark scorpion that lives in Central Texas, but is much less common and usually must be sought out by aspiring entomologists.

3. Florida Bark Scorpion

  • Scientific name:   Centruroides gracilis
  • Size: 4 inches
  • Venomous:  Yes

The Florida Bark Scorpion is an invasive species for Texas. It is venomous, but is not considered to be dangerous or deadly. Still, it is a mild cause for concern and a threat to safety as it has a tendency to set up in residential areas. It’s less common than the Bark Scorpion, but has been on the rise in the past five years as they’ve settled into the landscape.

This species actually originated in the tropics by boat, not from Florida as the namesake implies. It can be found hiding under stones and in wood piles, as well as inside houses.

If found, it should be handled with care, but there isn’t much to worry about. These scorpions tend to survive well in captivity and are a common aquarium pet.

4. Straight-Faced Solifugid

scorpions tour in texas

  • Scientific name: Solifugae
  • Size: 6 inches
  • Venomous:  No

Unlike other types of scorpions, the Straight-Faced Solifugid is only able to walk on three pairs of legs, choosing to instead use their slender first pair as sensory organs. They also possess vertically curved jaws that can cause an incredibly painful bite. These jaws are actually the largest for their size of any terrestrial invertebrate.

They get the nickname “wind scorpion” for their speed and agility on normally rugged desert terrain. They aren’t venomous, but that’s because they can cause so much mechanical damage with their pincers that it isn’t required to stun prey. Because of this, they aren’t considered a “true scorpion” as they don’t produce any venom, but are still included in the family.

5. Lindo Scorpion

scorpions tour in texas

  • Scientific name:  Diplocentrus lindo
  • Size:  1.5 inches

The Lindo Scorpion’s range extends from Western Texas to the north of Mexico that borders Texas. It’s a dark reddish brown color with a relatively short and sticky tail. They’re also known as the Digging Scorpion for the way they burrow in the desert sand, and are a close relative of the Emperor Scorpion .

This scorpion is actually quite slow growing and is assumed to be long lived. It’s also believed it can take up to 8 years to reach sexual maturity, which heavily contributes to this species being relatively unknown and commonly misidentified as Diplocentrus diablo.

6. Giant Hairy Scorpion

scorpions tour in texas

  • Scientific name:  Hadrus Arizonesis
  • Size: 5.5 inches
  • Venomous: Yes, but mild

This is actually one of the biggest scorpions in the United States and while it has a fearsome name, it’s mostly harmless and can’t cause any severe injury in humans. Allergic reactions are still a concern, so be careful when checking under rocks in and around San Antonio.

Its large size allows it to feed easily on other scorpions and a variety of other prey, including lizards and snakes. It gets its common name from the brown hairs that cover its body and help with water and heat retention, as well as to detect vibrations in the soil.

Even though their venom is mild, this is still considered to be one of the more aggressive and active scorpions and should be handled with caution.

7. Lesser Stripetail Scorpion

  • Scientific name:  Hoffmannius coahuilae
  • Size: 1.4-2.2 inches

This is a medium sized scorpion that ranges throughout Texas and Northern Mexico . It lives in a variety of habitats and elevations and can survive at over 7,000 feet. They’re primarily a burrowing species and can be most easily found by using a blacklight to search under rocks and debris.

The sting of the Lesser Stripetail Scorpion is incredibly painful and can last anywhere between 15 minutes to an hour. It isn’t lethal and there are no real medical side effects after the neurotoxic venom leaves your system, but minor swelling and edema may be experienced during that time period. The females are supposedly more painful as they tend to be the larger of the sexes.

CONCERT REVIEW: SCORPIONS Prove to Houston They Still Have Tons of “Gas In The Tank” (September 17th, 2022)

scorpions tour in texas

Words by Samantha Buckman

There are numerous indomitable musical giants staring down the beast of aging and giving a firm middle finger to any talk of retirement. Def Leppard , Motley Crue, and Iron Maiden are just a handful of the sexagenarians taking to the stage with both youthful vigor and charisma rooted in decades of experience. This trend has proven to be wonderfully fruitful in recent tours, with many rock and metal legends stuffing stadiums full of old and new fans alike.

The Scorpions are another name that has emerged from the mist in this phenomenon and era of rock revival. Even as the band itself celebrates fiftieth anniversaries (and some of its members’ seventieth birthdays), roaring crowds and vibrant lights still define this seminal group’s modern reputation. Their current North American trek has done nothing but reignite passions and illuminate the skills that gave this band the spotlight in the first place, and allowed them to shape both rock and metal for decades to come. Their performance in Houston, Texas was no exception to the raving reviews that have followed the Scorpions ’s latest foray into entertaining the masses while keeping the spirit of rock alive.

Opening for the tour was ThunderMother . Comprised of fiery young Swedish women set on building their own reputations as performing greats, it was a strong set to spark the start of an explosively enthralling night. Their set showed off their raw fire and passion, and gave rise to spirited enthusiasm from a crowd largely comprised of older rock fans. This feat was accomplished without any signs of intimidation or hesitation with such a notable act due to perform right on their heels. The energy brought by an eager lead guitar, matched with precise and thunderous percussion, made Thunder Mother a fitting match for the rest of the show to come.

THUNDERMOTHER Photo Gallery:

scorpions tour in texas

When it comes to the discussion of the headlining act, it’s all but impossible to pick a point to begin. This carefully orchestrated set had all the hallmarks of a stellar show: precise pyrotechnics, energetic performers, an engaging light show, and good old rock ‘n’ roll. With an eye to the set-list it’s clear that the Scorpions erred on the side of rock rather than their influence on metal’s early days. This meant that the act forewent heavier material in favor of predictable and rhythmic rockers, well balanced with a sampling of classics alongside newer material.

The two ballads of the night carried momentum throughout, with enough excitement to keep the crowd on its toes even as the tempo slowed at the show’s midpoint. “Send Me an Angel” began with Rudy on an acoustic Flying V while Mathias took on the opening melody. This dynamic was made only more interesting as the lyrics to the first verse of “Winds of Change” were reflected for our modern times:

“I listen to my heart It says Ukraine Waiting for the wind to change A dark and lonely night Our hopes and dreams won’t change Waiting for the wind to change”

That the song was first written in the wake of the Cold War, and originally spoke of optimism for Russia’s future, it was striking to hear the change of lyrics and see the Ukraine flag on Mathias ’ guitar.

As for the performers themselves, it was hard to imagine that some have passed their seventieth birthdays. Rudy and Mathias prowled the catwalks and took up the stage with larger-than-life recitations. Both men jumped with unexpected spryness and Pavel even dropped to his knees at the edge of the stage. The first three songs saw Klaus hitting a cow bell during breaks and solos, tossing the drumsticks into the crowd just after “The Zoo.” And as for solos, Mikkey was the highlight of the night with more than six minutes of drumming fury that made it clear to see why King Diamond misses him so sorely. There was no better place to sandwich the drum and bass solos than between “New Vision” and “Blackout.” <

To accent the raw talent that they brought to Houston, the Toyota Center turned night into day with an impressively choreographed light show. It was easily comparable with the legendary stadium shows put on by the likes of KISS and the Trans Siberian Orchestra . This made for not just a great complement to a rollicking set, but another way to supercharge the spirits of an already excited audience. In short, it was nothing less than epic.

What would a great night be without a great encore? Scorpions delivered here as well, leading with “No One Like You” before delivering the classic “Rock You Like a Hurricane.” This end to an impressive 17-song set was as satisfying as it was enthralling, each musician showing off a final burst of youthful energy. If you have the chance, catch these talented artists in the latest arc of their never-ending glory days.

Scorpions in Texas and What To Do If You Encounter One

Scorpions in Texas

Scorpions truly look like something out of a movie, but they’re actually a member of the arachnid species. You’ll immediately recognize them – they have the claws of a lobster and the tail of a pug that curls up over their backs. Their bodies are covered in a hard shell and the end of their curved tails are tipped with a stinger. And sting they do, but only when surprised.

Scorpions in Texas

About 1,500 known species of this predatory arachnid live across the world. More than 90 types live in this country alone. Texas is home to over a dozen different types of scorpions, with the most common being the striped bark scorpion or Centruroides vittatus . It’s a medium-sized, pale-colored scorpion, about two to three inches long. What sets it apart from the other scorpions are the two dark stripes across its back with a dark triangle on its head.

There’s no escaping scorpions if you live in Texas. We’re lucky, though – Baja California has more than 60 separate species of scorpions! More than likely, the only type of scorpion you’ll ever see is the striped bark scorpion, although it’s possible you’ll run into the wind scorpion and the cave scorpion if you’re out and about around caves and wilderness areas.

Where will I find scorpions?

With so many scorpions around Texas, it’s not surprising to find one in the sink or on the floor from time to time. The striped bark scorpion especially loves the dark, so you could find them under the sink, under the bed, in the linen closet and in the garage and backyard, under rocks and debris — anywhere there’s a dark corner or space.

The scorpion’s love of dark places means they may see you before you see them. As a matter of fact, most people don’t even know there are scorpions around them until they are stung.

Scorpions are most active at night when few lights are on. So getting up in the middle of the night and turning on the light may mean you’re greeted by a surprise nocturnal visitor.

What should I do if I get stung?

Scorpions sting when they’re surprised, which is the main way we come across them. Each year, thousands are stung, but in most cases, the sting is not deadly. The area around the sting will swell and you’ll feel a burning sensation (more so than a bee sting). In those who are sensitive or allergic to stinging insects, there may be feelings of lightheadedness, flushing, nausea and vomiting; more severe reactions can include anaphylactic shock, so make sure to keep an eye on anyone with severe allergies.

The good news is that even without treatment, the reaction to a scorpion sting lasts about 30 minutes. The best way to treat a scorpion sting is to apply ice as soon as possible, to reduce the swelling and burning at the site. Because swelling is, at times, not confined to the area of the bite alone, it’s best to remove jewelry and watches, so your rings don’t get stuck on your fingers. Also, wash the area well with soap and water.

How can I avoid scorpions?

Unfortunately, if you live in Texas any amount of time, you can’t avoid scorpions, but there are things you can do to lessen the risk:

  • Find their hiding spots. Do some scorpion hunting. Under black light, scorpions appear blue, so grab a black light, turn out the rest of the lights and search in the crevices and corners of the house.
  • Stop, look and shake. Because scorpions love the dark, be aware they could be hiding in the last dark place you’d think of – your shoes, your bed and your clothes. Before you put on your shoes, shake them out. Same goes for your clothes – shake your clothes before putting them on; you never know who has chosen that shirt as a cozy resting place.
  • Keep on those shoes . While we’re talking about shoes, make sure to wear them. Avoid going barefoot, especially when walking in grass or other places where scorpions could be hiding.
  • Protect your hands. If you’re going to be working outside, remember to wear gloves; your lawn and garden are perfect hiding places for scorpions, hiding under rocks and other debris. Be watchful as you reach into dark areas that haven’t been used in a while, like your garage and work bench that have gone unused over the winter.

To reduce the risk of scorpions getting into the house, seal your home as best you can. As each new season comes around, check around your windows and doors to make sure they close completely, then caulk and weather strip if you find gaps or worn weatherstripping.

May begins with an ol’ fashion wild west shootout with THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson in the Dallas suburb of McKinney, Texas.

Since 1968, Byron Nelson has been synonymous with this event held in the Dallas area. After recent stops at TPC Four Seasons and Trinity Forest, TPC Craig Ranch took over hosting duties starting with the 2021 tournament.

Opened in 2004, the Tom Weiskopf design, like most things in Texas, is bigger than most tracks. Playing to 7,414 yards, the par-71 layout, changed from par-72 for the 2023 edition, provides plenty of room to work the golf ball with and against the wind that blows in this part of the world.

With all that room, the best players in the world have little trouble scoring on this layout. K.H. Lee (+5000) won the first two editions at TPC Craig Ranch and set the tournament scoring record each time. Posting 25-under and winning by three, the Korean picked up his first victory on the PGA TOUR in the 2021 edition. Successfully defending his title in 2022, he went one shot better, 26-under. Squaring only six bogeys against 53 birdies and two eagles, he finally ran out of gas in 2023. Signing for four more rounds of 70 or better and running his total to 12 straight, his 11-under-par total of 273 was good for a tie for 50 th . Yep, 11-under-par did NOT finish in the top 50 last year! Go lower!

Strokes Gained: Approach the Green

Players listed are in the field this week; 2024 season stats.

When the wind blows – and it will blow – the players who can control the golf ball will have the advantage this week. The Bentgrass green complexes are almost 6,800 square feet, on average, and provide massive targets that most will hit repeatedly. Flighting wedges and holding shots into the proper quadrants will provide more realistic scoring chances than having approach putts from outside 40 feet.

Jason Day (+2000) , the third choice at BetMGM Sportsbook, posted four rounds in the 60s last year to take home his second trophy in a Byron Nelson event. Winning for the first time on TOUR at TPC Four Seasons in 2011 at 22, the 35-year-old opened with 64 and closed with 62 last year to win on 23-under, the highest winning total from the three editions. With the average winning score registering at 24-under and the highest total to make the cut at 4-under, scores in the 70s this week will likely ensure an early checkout. The Australian posted 70-69 here in 2021, 5-under-par, and went home early. In the 2022 edition, he posted three rounds in the 60s, but a 73 in Round 3 knocked him to 13-under and T53. Yep, 13-under did NOT crack the top 50.

Rounds in the 60s

Dallas native Jordan Spieth (+1600), the betting favorite this week, will look to build on his two excellent performances at TPC Craig Ranch. Appearing in the inaugural edition in 2021, the former Texas Longhorn shared the first-round lead on 63 but posted rounds of 70 and 71 to finish T9. Playing in the final group the following year, his final round 67 could not catch Lee to force a playoff. Posting 43-under in two visits, he has circled 48 birdies and four eagles.

Putting: Birdie or Better Conversion Percentage

Bentgrass greens, the first time in use this season on TOUR outside Augusta National, will only run at 11.5 feet on the Stimpmeter (wind), a perfect speed for holing putts. Paying off the approaches for birdies or saving pars and not losing ground is important in keeping up in a shootout. Over three events at TPC Craig Ranch, the cut has been 4-under or BETTER, and single digits under par after 72 holes did not register a spot inside the TOP 60. The 2022 event produced the most birdies and eagles on TOUR.

Si Woo Kim (+1800) trails Spieth as second choice at the top of the BetMGM odds board. Trying to emulate his countryman’s effort of coming from behind to win the 2022 edition, Kim’s final round 63 last year could not match Day’s 62. Making his fourth appearance in Dallas, the four-time winner on TOUR has never posted a round above par in 10 chances.

Oddsmaker’s extras

Seamus Power (+5000): Making his fourth consecutive start, the Irishman will look to add to his success outside Dallas. Cashing T19 or better on all three visits, he’s the only player in that exclusive club. Posting 70 once in 12 rounds, the other 11 loops were all in the 60s.

Daniel Berger (+10000): The only other player in the field with a podium result, T3 in 2021, the Florida man returns to an event where he’s produced T23 or better in three visits on three different tracks. Playing his way back into form, Dallas has always provided a spark. Posting 64 in 2021 is his best of four rounds in the 60s.

Joseph Bramlett (+10000): Opening with 64 in 2021, the Stanford man began a streak of 12 straight rounds of 70 or better. Posting 48-under par over three visits, he returned to the top 20 (T19) last season after four more rounds in the 60s.

Ryan Palmer (+12500): The Colleyville, Texas, resident joins Spieth and K.H. Lee as the only players to have multiple top-10 paydays in the first three events. After blowing a tire in 2021 with a final round 75, the Colonial Country Club member returned in 2022 to share the 36-hole lead before cashing T5. The 2023 edition saw him improve as he shared the 54-hole lead before a final round 68 caused him to slip to T8. Highlighted by 62 in 2022, 10 of 12 career rounds are 70 or better.

C.T. Pan (+10000): Making his debut for the 2023 edition, he posted four rounds in the 60s, including a career-best 62 on Sunday to secure solo fourth.

Zecheng “Marty” Dou (+25000): Entered this week as sponsor’s exemption, the Dallas resident opened with 63 and posted 64 in Round 3 to share the 54-hole lead last year. Finishing with 67, he dropped to T5, his best payday on TOUR. Everybody needs a long shot!

Austin concert pianist Anton Nel shopped for prized Long Center Steinway

After the 16 years since the Long Center opened, a new Steinway concert grand piano has been installed. The search for the right one was a challenge and in itself a story. It was Anton Nel, an internationally renowned concert pianist who teaches at UT, who found the piano, used for major concerts.

So much musical pleasure — for so many people in Austin — depends on one concert grand piano.

Make that two 9-foot Steinway grands: The original German instrument chosen for the Long Center for the Performing Arts when it opened in 2008, and the new American specimen selected last year to replace the German model for most performances, a concert piano owned outright for the first time by the Austin Symphony Orchestra.

One man chose both crucial pianos: International concert star Anton Nel, who has lived in Austin — with a break — since 1986.

In part to celebrate the new grand — but also to redeem a promise given during the pandemic era — Nel will play all five Beethoven piano concertos over the course of just one weekend next season. Variations on season ticket packages are now on sale at my.austinsymphony.org/packages .

This ambitious marathon echoes a feat by another Austin Symphony darling, Olga Kern, who played all four Rachmaninoff concertos, plus the composer's "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini", over one weekend earlier this season.

What does a top concert pianist do?

One afternoon in February, Nel rehearsed alone on the Long Center stage. It was kind of spooky watching him work out the intricacies of the rarely played Benjamin Britten piano concerto without the 50-plus members of the Austin Symphony, led by Peter Bay, or the 2,400 members of the audience in the Long Center's Dell Hall.

It is a testament to the warm partnership between Nel and Bay that they have teamed up for at least 18 different concertos over the course of the past 25 years. For the record, Nel had never played the Britten before, so after Bay proposed the concert, Nel learned it from scratch. How many international concert pianists will do that for you?

"It's a highly effective, but very difficult piece," Nel says. "Unfortunately, rarely done. But Peter loves the piece and I was happy to learn it for the occasion."

Before the solo rehearsal, Nel worked on three personal pianos of his own. One is a replica of an 18th-century fortepiano, the kind that Haydn or Mozart would have used. "I adore this instrument," he says.

Another is a French double-manual harpsichord, a replica of an instrument from François Copuerin's time. The third is a 9-foot Steinway grand, made at the company's American factory, which he purchased not long after he helped pick out the Long Center's first Steinway — a German product — selected with fanfare in 2008.

Nel, who teaches at the University of Texas Butler School of Music, has been in demand as a concert pianist for decades, something that the city's cultural establishment — outside the classical music community — has been slow at times to extol.

"Since January, I've played a different city every week," says the native of South Africa. "Seattle, San Francisco, Phoenix, Dallas, Toronto, Chicago and so forth."

His tight schedule of teaching, performing, traveling and whipping up wonders in the kitchen was upended recently by, of all things, a triple fracture in the right pinky due to a pickleball accident, an activity he usually indulges in several times a week.

"I was out for two months," Nel says. "Fortunately I had a great local surgeon, Dr. Harrison Kay, who pinned the finger together. I designed the rehab myself and was lucky enough to play in public again less than two months after the operation."

What do you want in a Steinway?

So why a new concert piano for the Long Center?

"The one I picked all those years ago is still an excellent instrument," Nel says. "But pianos don't necessarily age well, since they have so many parts that can wear out! The time had come for a new companion, and also for artists to have a choice when they come to play with the symphony."

"There's an excitement around having a new one," he continues. "And it's kind of a luxury to have an old one still in relatively great condition. Really, it's in fantastic shape, which makes me happy, since I have a soft spot for that instrument."

Nel explains that the two pianos are made from slightly different material.

"Normally, the German pianos have a darker sound" Nel says. "I grew up playing them in South Africa and have always loved their color range. For our new selection, I was looking for something with a different sound that would also suit the hall well."

Like the older Steinway, it had to fit the acoustics at Dell Hall.

"I know the resonance in that hall so well," Nel says. "It needs something bold and brilliant since it has to fill a big space. Not a 'shrinking violet' piano! It must hold up to the hall."

No ordinary shopping day

Last year, when Nel arrived at the Steinway showroom on Avenue of the Americas in New York City, he was presented with five instruments ready for his inspection. Although Nel would not divulge their price tags, the top line usually go for something like $250,000, according to online valuations.

Nel sat down to play each instrument, but he listened not only to what he heard, but what he might hear in the future after it has been played in concert settings.

"I have a sixth sense about how they will sound once they are played in," he says, "because they don't sound that way yet. The hammers are new. It hasn't been broken in yet. It takes time. It's like buying a house, you know, the house chooses you."

Nel usually plays the same things on every instrument. Three of the offered pianos did not appeal to him. That left two finalists.

"One really attracted me, it had a beautiful sound already and had a lot of character possibilities," Nel says. "The more I played, however, I realized it was an instrument more suited to a smaller space. Too small for the Long Center. What's important is how long the sound is sustained. You need it to to sound for a long time."

Testing a new piano, Nel tries out all the registers.

"Your bass is the Rock of Gibraltar," he says. "Most of the melodies are in the middle, so you want the middle to sing as well. All the beautiful melodies are right there. The top register has to have an incredible amount of crystalline brilliance. Romantic and later works will often feature that register and it's important that I can cut through the orchestra."

The second finalist possessed all that.

"Even in its fledgling state, it was already in an impressive condition and will only develop over time," Nel says. "And if it is well cared-for — and there is a special room for the pianos at the Long Center — it should be around for a good while."

The benefits of good musical partners

Nel arrived in Austin a dozen years before the Peter Bay era.

"Peter has elevated this ensemble so much," he says. "In a concerto, for instance, the orchestra part is so difficult. But I arrive and, at the first rehearsal, they know it perfectly. Fifty percent of the battle is done. It's the very best safety net a soloist can have.

"I have seen him do spectacular saves in tricky soloist situations, and he does it all in such an unassuming way. It's great that we've done 18 concertos together. It has really been a long and wonderful journey."
