Horseback riding Iceland

HORSEBACK RIDING HOLIDAYS IN WESTERN ICELAND

We trail from Gröf through a magical, ever-changing landscape, from rough lava, over sparkling streams and rivers, to white sandy beaches until we reach Löngufjörur, one of the longest beaches in Iceland, at spring tide. At the time of spring tide, even more of the sand is exposed and the ground is softer. There we can ride for hours on the famous smooth gait tolt, unique to Icelandic horses, and the horses can really show their worth running free without any obstacles to slow them down.

Even though the tour is a roundtrip, and the horses stay on a field where we have stopped for the day, you’ll return each day back to the farm where you can enjoy a bit of luxury in our Lodge The Holy Ram. We have double & singlerooms with private bathrooms, a great hall with a cozy livingroom feeling, where you’ll have magnificient view of the glacier Snaefellsjökull and the beach.

Non-riders are more then welcome to join their partners, our farm Gröf is very close by the Snaefellsjökull national park, which is a great area to hike and explore. In the neighbourhood there’s a beautiful 9 hole golfcourse for golflovers, plenty of fish in the lakes and rivers for fishlovers, or just enjoy the peacefull surroundings of our farm with a wide variety of birds. Both around our guest house and further away, various species nest. Also on our fields we have wildflowers and herbs for naturelovers, take a walk to our beach or go up to our mountains to see the waterfalls and meet our horses along the way or just relax in the hottub and sauna.

Snæfellsnes: Beach and Mountain Ride

This is a shorter version of the Snæfellsnes tour.

Experiencing “tölt”, the unique extra gait of the Icelandic Horse is made easy for you on this tour when we follow good riding tracks. The long stretches of smooth sandy beaches make this tour a delight for both horses and riders.

This horseback riding tour takes us through a landscape of extensive lava fields, craters, and ash from ancient eruptions in Hítardalur valley. We also enjoy wide-open stretches of light-colored sand at Löngufjörur beach, where only the tide sets a limit to the freedom of horse and man. The impressive 50-meter deep crater Eldborg is a distinctive landmark, where the light sand turns black once you reach its lava field.

This traditional trail, only revealed when the tide is out, offers horse and rider an ideal opportunity to try their skill at “tölting” over long distances.

Extra equipment

Price doesn't include, equestrian info, guide & local team, minimum riding ability, tacking ability and participation, trip conditions and requested experience, equestrian equipment, travel info, packing list, sustainable tourism.

  • Travel light. It's a little known fact, but the lighter you pack, the better for the environment as heavy bags will produce higher emissions (when flying a plane or driving a car!).
  • Reduce plastic waste. Take your favorite reusable bottle with you. Avoid single-use bags, cups, or straws.
  • Preserve nature. Always take your rubbish with you during the ride and recycle them. Leave all the flowers or plants as you found them, and never get too close when observing wildlife. Make sure to use eco-friendly products such as body wash or laundry detergent (if camping) to protect both your skin and the environment.
  • Choose your experiences carefully. Respect animal life by not participating in any activities that abuse wild animals (shows, elephant rides, etc.).
  • Support local populations. Buy local handicrafts, be respectful of customs, and learn about the culture of local communities.
  • Share! Raise awareness among your family and friends about sustainable tourism.

Did you know?

With its volcanic black sand beaches and under the watchful eye of volcano Snæfellsjökull, the Snaefellsnes peninsula is one of Iceland’s most beautiful and emblematic sights, and is home to many of the Icelandic sagas. The 90-km long peninsula is even nicknamed “Iceland in Miniature” as many national sights can be found in the area. The Snæfellsjökull National Park , where you ride, can be found at the westernmost part of the peninsula, including the mystical glacier-capped volcano Snæfellsjökull.

A note on sustainable tourism: in 2008, the communities of Snaefellsnes Peninsula were the first in Europe to receive certification from EarthCheck, an international benchmarking system for sustainable travel and tourism.
