Luke Skywalker Wasn't The Only Jedi Working With The Rebels In The Original Trilogy
I was a child of the star wars prequels, & now i'm watching history repeat itself, only 3 more star wars lego sets are due out this year (here's when they come out).
The Star Wars franchise encompasses everything from the Skywalker saga and stand-alone movies, to live-action television series, cartoons, novels, and comic books. Little did George Lucas know that when he released Star Wars in 1977, it would open up the world to a fictional universe that would only grow with each passing decade and each generation of fans.

One of the biggest ways fans show their appreciation for the franchise and demonstrate their deep knowledge of its lore is through fan-fiction, and Archive of our Own houses one of the most impressive collections of material set in the galaxy far, far away. With over 150,000 stories and counting, it can be difficult to know where to begin, so here are 10 amazing works to get started.
The Story Of Finn
There is a not-so-insubstantial group of fans who feel that Finn should have been the hero of the Sequel Trilogy , and The Story Of Finn , by LullabyKnell, aims to remedy that by showing what the heroic deeds of ex-stormtrooper FN-2187 would have meant to the nameless armored men and women serving the First Order.
The 26,000 word story focuses on the ripple effect of Finn's actions in the lives of stormtroopers who, inspired by his journey, start to create ways for others who want to escape the fascist dictatorship. The story of "the traitor" is told again and again until it becomes the story of "the messiah." This fic inspired several outstanding continuations including Tomorrow (there'll be more of us) and Have You Heard .
Double Agent Vader
Fans of the Dark Lord of the Sith will be sure to like Double Agent Vader , by Fialleril , a fanfic that posits what would have happened if the infamous Sith Lord became a double agent a few years after Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith .
RELATED: Star Wars: 5 Of The Nicest Things Darth Vader Ever Did (& 5 Of The Worst Acts Anakin Committed)
At nearly 93,000 words the fic feels like a novella, as well it should considering its timeline includes Vader working for the Rebellion with Leia Organa as his primary point of contact. Set as a series of one-shots (fully encapsulated short stories) it's very accessible, but also manages to give an in-depth analysis of Vader's personality using a unique scenario. It's considered one of the best Star Wars fanfics available.
Reprise (Parts I, II, III, & IV)
Time travel, in Star Wars ? Reprise , by Elfpen, functions as a fantastic alternate universe fic from the perspective of Obi-Wan Kenobi after he dies during his duel with Vader aboard the Death Star, waking up 41 years earlier in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Readers will get deep into the conflicted mind of the Jedi Master who felt even at the time of his death that he had unfinished business, and see what he does with the second chance to forge an entirely new path for himself.
Parts I, II, and III come in at 523,637 words, so this is a truly robust series that highlights the difficulty of trying to create a better future from a bitter past when Kenobi is clearly haunted by his memories and filled with regret. And it comes with a big bonus for Qui-Gon Jinn fans!
What would happen if Leia, having only known her father as Darth Vader, was given the opportunity to meet the real man behind the mask? This is the scenario explored in Reflection , by Fyre, when Leia gets to see him first as a Force ghost on Endor shortly after the destruction of the Second Death Star, and then at various other stages during her efforts to rebuild the Republic.
At around 7,000 words it's a brisk piece but a powerfully intimate one, focusing on Leia's frustration around forgiving a man she fought against for so many years. What could she say to "the Emperor's weapon," the man who destroyed so many people she loved? What had she always wanted to say to Anakin Skywalker, the man she never got a chance to meet? The answers will leave readers in tears.
The Sith Who Brought Life Day
The Sith Who Brought Life Day , by Ophelia_interrupted, is a whimsical, hilarious fic about an everyman Imperial intelligence officer named Aswald who loses a bet and has the horrific honor of getting Darth Vader a present for Life Day. It reads like the Star Wars version of Office Space, complete with lampooning of Imperial corporate culture.

At just over 13,000 words it's surprising just how much readers will quickly become attached to Aswald as he mines the data banks for the perfect Life Day gift and stumbles upon such nuggets as "Luke Skywalker was even several centimetres too short to be a stormtrooper. " Routinely laugh-out-loud funny, the satire is full of asides and references to the Prequel and Original Trilogies for fans who appreciate meta-humor.
Old Man Luke
Luke Skywalker beats Obi-Wan Kenobi at his own game when, as an embittered and grizzled Jedi Master in Old Man Luke , he travels back in time to troll the Jedi Master in his youth, before he became the mysterious figure who would riddle Luke's life with puzzling questions.
Clocking in at 70,000 words, this fic by scarletjedi is accessible and bingeable, especially for those fans who can't get enough of the sass and sarcasm between Luke and his former mentor. Along the way, he also bonds with a certain rascally young man from Tatooine, and completely deflates the hype of the Jedi Order.
The Tyranny Of Kinship
For fans of The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, The Tyranny Of Kinship , by A marielah, includes many fan-favorite characters like Captain Rex and Ahsoka Tano , but at its center is the familial dysfunction of the Skywalkers spurred on by a difficult conversation Bail Organa has to have with Darth Vader about the true nature of Leia's parentage.
Just shy of 40,000 words, this fic explores what might have happened if both Vader and Leia learned the truth of their connection while she was being held in the detention block of the Death Star. What begins as a stubborn interrogation of one another leads to a satirical and sharply written father/daughter buddy adventure that is equal parts hilarious and poignant.
Sky Marked Souls
No fan-fiction recommendation would be complete without a Reylo piece featuring the Resistance hero and the fiery First Order warrior. Sky Marked Souls , by AnonymousMink, explores the Force bond between Ren and Rey in a unique way that feels timeless and romantic.
RELATED: Star Wars: The 10 Best Reylo Scenes From The Sequel Trilogy
At around 22,000 words, it's substantial enough without feeling superfluous, and follows a prompt from cerulean8ullet on tumblr, "Soulmates get blue marks on their skin wherever their other person gets physical pain," creating some vivid and poetic imagery that allows the two to connect through empathy and understanding rather than pain.
Rebels: An Alternate Tale
For fans of Ahsoka Tano, one of the most beloved characters in recent Star Wars media, Rebels: An Alternate Tale , by SirLoozElite , explores a series of events that could have gone differently had the young Jedi, or those around her, made different decisions.
Collected as a series of one-shots that have been assembled into a compendium that comes in at a whopping 420,000 words, this fic will have something for every fan who has wanted to expand the story of Star Wars Rebels. It begins with a confrontation between Ahsoka and Darth Maul in the lower depths of Malachor, continues with her encounter with Grand Admiral Thrawn , and concludes with a daring suicide mission.
One Hell Of A Mess
For fans who wished that hotshot Resistance pilot Poe Dameron and ex-stormtrooper Finn had been more than friends, One Hell Of a Mess , by Noelia_G, is a spiritedly entertaining focused fic on the two getting to know one another over the course of a dinner that Poe cooks for his skeptical friend.
The StormPilot fic comes in at right around 5,000 words so it's short and sweet, but the characterizations of Finn and Poe perfectly capture the chemistry seen on screen between the pair in the Sequel Trilogy. Rey even features, and the dialogue between the trio crackles with their snappy banter.
