By the year 2382 , the standard Starfleet uniform was again modified from its previous incarnation , returning to the collar style of the uniform in the late 2360s , and the division colors of the early 2370s uniform . Standard duty uniform [ ]

The standard duty uniform consisted of a long-sleeved jacket , which was primarily black in color, and a pair of black trousers . The color of the jacket's shoulders and the angled sleeves indicated the division to which an officer belonged: red for command , gold for operations , and blue for sciences . Unlike the late 2360s variant of the uniform, the division color did not stretch across the torso. A black stripe also ran through the division color, from the torso to the upper back.

Rounded rank insignia were worn on the right side of the mandarin collar, which was black regardless of the division color. The combadge , which returned to the design used in the 2370s, was worn on the officer's left breast.

Division colors were continued from the previous uniform iteration, except sciences blue, which became considerably deeper in color. The shade of blue adopted for the sciences division during this time had not been seen in Starfleet uniforms since the early 2350s version was phased out.

The flag officer uniform was very similar to the standard command division uniform, with the addition of gold accents below the shoulders and on the sleeves, both framed by the division coloring. Additionally, flag officer rank insignia were worn twice: one bar on either side of the collar. ( PIC : " The End is the Beginning ")

A Close-Up Look At Starfleet Uniforms From ‘Star Trek: Picard’

Thanks to filming on location at the Anaheim convention center, a number of photos from the location shoot for Star Trek: Picard have surfaced. Everyone’s talking about the uniforms, so here is TrekMovie’s breakdown of the uniform, created by artist Aaron Harvey.  He didn’t have a trailer to go on, as he did when he created a similar graphic for  Star Trek: Discovery , but he looked at the photos and pulled together a best guess based on what’s out there.

Design Notes

• Division colored shoulder/yoke
• High collar
• Mock turtleneck, possibly with a subtle texture
• Rank pips have been moved from collar to right breast (similar to uniforms seen in Star Trek Online and from the 2009 “Countdown to Star Trek”, movie tie-in comic book)
• Combadge is larger than its TNG-era counterpart. The little bit we can see in the CBS Upfront image suggests an open framed delta similar to the “All Good Things…” combadge. The rotated oval is a homage to the combadges of TNG and the promotional delta imagery used to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Star Trek in 1996.
• While it would be odd to have a split delta AND split background, it does seem that Starfleet’s “bifurcated delta” as established in Star Trek: Discovery is, for the time being, the delta of choice. This is supported by a closer look at the Starfleet Headquarters banners that have been seen in the recent pictures from the location shoot for Star Trek: Picard .
• The uniform consists of 3 pieces: undershirt, pants, and a zippered uniform tunic/jacket.
• The pants appear fairly similar to the TNG-era uniforms: full-length pants covering all but the heel, with a subtle triangular-cut opening for the top of the foot and toe.
• This uniform feels oddly plain, considering it’s from a modern, 2019 show. It lacks the detail most contemporary genre shows heap onto their costumes—the result of using super high-resolution cameras, and larger-than-ever home theaters. That perhaps indicates that this is not the final iteration of Starfleet uniform that will be seen in the full series. This could be an early mock-up of the uniforms used for a brief clip specifically filmed for CBS All Access’ UpFronts for advertisers. Similar footage was made and used for the same purpose for Star Trek: Discovery in 2017. It could also indicate that this series will be something quite different from all earlier Star Trek series, one that won’t feature Starfleet or its uniformed personnel as heavily in the past

Design Influences

This new Starfleet uniform has a lot of influences from the 24th (and early 25th) century; it’s a bit of a mashup of designs we’ve seen before.

The Next Generation

Perhaps the most obvious influence is the Next Generation season 3 uniform with its trademark Mandarin-style collar, which makes a return in Picard . Also, this new uniform is a two-piece design, like the TNG uniform.

The collar in the Picard uniform is higher and has a deeper V-neck than the TNG uniform, somewhat resembling the collars seen in the semi-official Countdown graphic novel prequel to Star Trek (2009), which shows the Prime universe events that led to the destruction of Romulus in 2387. The Picard design also borrows the similar positions of the rank pips—on the right breast, rather than on the collar.

Deep Space Nine/Voyager

Perhaps the second most recognizable design influence is that the division color is on the shoulders while the rest of the uniform is black, a lot like the more utility-focused jumpsuits seen on Deep Space Nine and Voyager .

Star Trek Online

Lastly, there’s a bit of the enlisted uniform from Star Trek Online as well, especially in the neck area, with the idea of an undershirt that you can see through the “V” in the collar. The division color is on the shoulders, like the Picard uniform.

Star Trek: Picard  is expected to be released in late 2019. It will be available on CBS All Access in the USA. Space and CraveTV in Canada, and on Amazon Prime Video for the rest of the world.

Podcast: All Access Goes To SXSW For The ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 5 Premiere

It does look cheap to the point of it being a one off use for the pilot. The design is cool, the materials and detail lacking.

And you can tell this from some blurry long distance on set photos and a fan-created extrapolation? Frankly, if it does look like this, i’ll be pleased. I feel some modern shows and movies overdo the “detail” and “texturing.” I know why they do it, but it’s actually starting to become less and less realistic/believable.

Umm, no, there is a short video (from a CBS promo) showing it much more clearly and it looks bad.

I get the design choices… It would be nice to see some synergy between the new show, IDW’s Countdown and STO. Pipe dream, I know. But still.

Love when TrekMovie goes in depth on little tidbits while we are waiting for more info to drop. My money is on the uniforms not being important to the plot and/or a flashback.

I don’t think the uniforms are insignificant, I just think they’re the Starfleet uniforms and there’s not much more to it than that. I DO think however that we’re not going to be spending much time at all with Starfleet in this series. I think the first few episodes might be on earth or at SF but other than that Picard will be going off on whatever mission it is that he feels he needs to complete to “make things right” and no that won’t be time travel.

Now that we have that bit of nonsense out of the way, good analysis.

The new uniform has a similar cutaway as the Countdown version as well, though reversed.

The close up photo of it looks like cheap cosplay. Is this 2019?

Dr. Image I’m not sure cheap is the issue.

But it does look like the construction of the top wasn’t ideal on the ensign’s uniform. There is a definite bump where the neck facing ends, and another where the shoulderpad begins.

I keep thinking of Gersha Phillips point in a recent interview that the bright colours, especially the yellow, show everything.

It may be that with high definition a boldly coloured solid fabric is really unforgiving.

And it suggests that all the super detailed costumes we’re seeing in HD are as much to cover up small fit and construction issues as to take advantage of HD.

But it really doesn’t. The closeup of it on that actor talking to Stewart reminded me of the countless ensigns and background characters on TNG who seemed to wear the earlier versions of the uniform.

But at least theirs fit. It was obvious they weren’t wearing custom tailored uniforms like the main cast, but they didn’t exactly look unprofessional either.

Yeah I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out to be either an Academy uniform or a Starbase uniform.

But if it is the regular uniform I think that’s fine too.

Yes, the banners show them at Starfleet Headquarters, there would be a mix of uniforms if these were cadet uniforms. The guy in the video is an ensign and the other shots from a distance show more pips so they are even higher ranked.

Well the pips could also indicate Class as in 1 = freshman 2 = sophomore etc.

The pips for Academy and the Pips for service are different, from the leaked footage I could see that they’re using the TNG rank pips, so if they were in the academy, then the pips would be more square, not round

Since the new trailer states Picard was an admiral, and he left Starfleet for some reason, that doesn’t seem to connect him to the Academy. My first thought was he is back at headquarters about to make a request or something…

All the banners in these shot say “Star Fleet HQ” so I am betting they are not academy uniforms.

TNG uniforms are my favorite, so the color over black isn’t what I hoped for. Still, I’m not going to judge anything until I see the show properly. If I judged a show based on costumes, TOS would be the worst Trek show, which IMHO, is not the case.

If Starfleet doesn’t play a major role in this show, they may have decided to design the uniforms mostly to provoke nostalgia.

That promotional delta premiered with the special celebrating the finale of TNG, in May 1994, more than two years before the 30th anniversary.

The strangest thing is that they are using the TOS type font for the “Star Trek” title instead of anything related to TNG or DS9/VOY… It worked fin for DISCO or the KT movies, but this is the 25th century.

I’m guessing that TOS font is meant to be the brand for all Star Trek series now, like the Star Wars logo. Works for me.

OTOH, we are still 4-6 months out from the premiere. Go dig up the very first Deep Space Nine promo (the one without any photos or video of the cast—“Coming in January 1992!”).

THAT font was truly repellent.

The thing about that is the TOS font is widely recognized as iconically Star Trek. The TNG font is amazingly dated and just doesn’t sell the show anymore.

BUT the split font that screams 80s would fit with the bifurcated Starfleet insignia. Junkball on YouTube has a fascinating video about fonts in Trek, and I’m surprised by how many references there are across the series to various “Star Trek” fonts

The uniform on the cadet in the clip where he asks for Picard’s name looks like it doesn’t fit him and looks a bit odd. Seems to be really loose and like it was meant for someone else.

If you look at the chick walking behind Picard, her uniform is loose too.

I really hope those are not the new combadges. The one from “All Good Things…” and “Endgame” would be better and more in line with canon.

It would also be nice for there to be better synergy between ST:P, IDW’s Countdown and STO. It would be nice for CBS recognize at least some aspects of the game as canon. I’m not so sure about all the story lines, but definitely the Enterprise-F and the uniforms.

As said, its very TNG era, but updated to recognize its in a new era. That’s how you SHOULD do it!

When the uniform change is this subtle, it doesn’t really matter much in the grand scheme of things. The only thing I saw that I liked was the move of the rank indicators from the collar (always felt that was silly) to the more visible location up front. Otherwise, not much of a change.

I think it far more likely that the position of the pips was influenced by those on the future uniforms in various episodes like “All Good Things…”, “Endgame”, and “The Visitor.” Those uniforms would have inspired the position of the Online and Countdown pips, after all.

Do not need elaborate detail. Simple texture is enough.

It seems to be lacking even that however.

Also love the new com badges! That’s the biggest indicator we are back in the 24th century. I even loved when they made an appearance on Discovery with Section 31.

The Section 31 badge is the best one I’ve seen so far. I almost bought one, but I’m too cheap.

Could this be the first Star Trek show that is NOT based on characters in Starfleet? That actually would be kind of cool and different. Perhaps Picard is a diplomat on some journey or quest? And maybe since the uniforms are not heavily detailed, Starfleet is just in the background, only appearing every so often.

This sounds very promising, but with the track record of these Discovery writers my optimism is diminished. But, here’s hoping!

It’s a different writing team and Michael Chabon is on it.

Chabon did some work for Discovery as I recall. At least the Short Trek about the abandoned ship falling in love with a stowaway. I thought it was well done. He may have some behind the scenes coordination with Discovery depending on whether his short syncs up.

I have a feeling we may not see Picard in Starfleet in the beginning but by the end of the season he may become part of it again. But yes this would be something really different and interesting if its not directly about him being in starfleet anymore. It shows they are willing to think outside the box and thats what Star Trek needs.

I’ve been very skeptical about any TNG characters making appearances, and have basically assumed the storyline will be away from Starfleet.

But Jonathan Frakes’ new tweet showing him with Patrick Stewart has got me reconsidering.

Yes, we know Frakes is directing the 2nd two episode block.

But he looks like he’s had a significant beard and hair style reshaping from his directing stints on Discovery and the Orville.

Could be just happenstance…but it made me wonder if he has a small role as Admiral Riker.

I still have a feeling a few characters may show up first season TG47, just trying to keep it all a surprise. Yes, I expect to be completely wrong lol but I just can’t get over the fact the same group that put Pike in Discovery for 14 straight episodes and made him captain of that ship when he was already captain of the Enterprise when there was NO reason to do it other than obvious fan service and to get more people to watch Discovery is not going to push the fan service envelope a little more on this show too. Especially when they know other characters will only motivate people to watch more.

But maybe they think Picard is all they need to get those people on board. But people still want to see him interact with others from TNG. Its not about having a ‘TNG reunion’ it just would feel weird he would have no ties to any of them at this point. Or maybe the plan is to hold off on any TNG characters until second season and let the new characters develop first. If so, then thats a valid reason.

Personally, I would be pleasantly stunned if NO TNG people appeared somewhere in this show. I am fully expecting two or three to show up and various points during the run. When they all say they have not been contacted, I cannot help but think that a rouse.

PLEASE, make a uniform that fits Picard this time.

When Star Trek 2009 was announced, I wrote to J J Abrams and suggested that all the crew on the new Enterprise wear baseball caps with ‘Star Trek’ written on the front.

Could this happen in the new Picard series? I might write-in and suggest it…

Baseball caps already happened in DS9.

And Enterprise. That NX-01 hat was boss, though.

I think the combadge might just be the existing “future version” seen in All Good Things instead of this oval-shaped one. The sharper angles in the existing one would also seem to match the uniform better, but I could be wrong.

It will probably be neither! It’s hard to guess from just a tiny bit of the top of a delta and a blurry far off shape, but that’s part of the fun of guessing!

Trekkies are irredeemable a-holes. If it’s not exactly like the originals, it’s newfangled “crap”; if it’s exactly like the originals, it’s not “advanced” enough, which is actually crap, since comfortable, practical clothes aren’t going to change in only 300 years, if ever.

I like them overall. I agree with those saying we might not see much of Starfleet, Picard and Co might actually be trying to avoid them. Perhaps Picard starts off as a Professor or Professor Emeritus at Starfleet Academy.

There was a list of character descriptions for “Picard” reported a few months back. Have no idea if it was authentic, but it seemed to suggest Picard would be teamed with a group of Han Solo types. Or better yet something like the “Gambit” two-parter from TNG.

I’m not sure about the authenticity of the character descriptions, but the casting has definitely skewed younger. Somehow this is all supposed to tie-in with the destruction of Romulus, though it’s unclear how big a part of the story that will be, or if it is just an important character moment for Picard. I really enjoy Discovery, but moving ahead to post-TNG-era is exciting, as we can get subtle (and maybe not so subtle) tie-ins with the events of TNG/DS9/VOY.

Exciting indeed.

I would like to see props like the type 2 phasers, tricorders, and communicators of this era.

Some of the Starship designs would be good too…

..Though as an Amazon Prime subscription holder I’d like to complain about the unfair advantage given to Canada and EU countries to watch this for Free through their subscription. While the USA counterparts get screwed and have to pay CBS all access!? It’s like a “WTF” momemt !

Aaron, Amazon is not free. In fact its actually higher than All Access in some places like in America. In Canada, they still have to subscribe to that cable channel to get it and one person said you can pay up to $18 a month to subscribe to it depending on your package deal and location.

Why do some people act like these shows are being watched for free everywhere? Its NOT, every platform both Discovery and Picard are all on paid media. No one is showing it over free airwaves. And believe it or not not everyone has Netflix or Amazon already. Some really do have to subscribe to those just to watch the show as we did for All Access. That’s the point after all, to get NEW people to subscribe.

And dosent everyone just down load or stream the shows illegally of they can’t get or want to pay? Am I the only one that still downloads torrants and putlocker type sites?

I guess most sites frown on people advocating to download things illegally so most people don’t mention it, but sure people still do it. But I do think it has become less and less of it as media companies have become more saavy and there are more crackdowns on those sites.

But I have no doubt plenty o people watch the show illegally.

We’re still paying extra. That’s the point he’s making. Come on. Yes, people are paying for Amazon all around the world. But only the US has to pay extra for the CBS subscription. To watch it on Amazon. Which we’re already paying for.

Aaron we can no more watch it free through our paid subscription to Amazon than you can through your paid subscription to CBS AA.

Sometimes you just can’t improve on perfection. I have always thought the STNG Season 3 uniforms, with Picards own variants, were the best of all series and closest to what TOS uniforms could have been in the future. DS9 and Voyager were variants of the academy uniform and never had the impact for me. Similarly the Enterprise D is still the most beautiful and sleek of all starships with it’s smooth lines. the USS Discovery took a while to get used to but I still don’t think it’s a ‘beautiful’ ship. I suppose we’ll just have to get used to these new uniforms designs.

The Disco is ugly as hell, and although the D is graceful and elegant, she isn’t my favorite design

From the combadge design I get the sense that in this Picard timeline perhaps the Federation is fractured 20% Section 31 or some other force maybe?

Beautiful art, Aaron – represented like the true communication artist you are. Although all things must evolve, I must say that the badge/communicator established for the 7 seasons of TNG was the best. Its beautiful, almost art deco-ish design, is/was timeless. They never needed to stray from it, except for mirror/alternate universes, and finally officially for the TNG films.

Thank you! The badge is guesswork based on blurry imagery, so it may be totally different. It does seem markedly bigger than in the TNG era though!

As much as I loved DS9, I never really liked the early-DS9/VOY era mostly-black jumpsuit uniforms. These are pretty reminiscent of those. I don’t think I’m in love with them.

Sometimes, less is more though. I’m happy at least they do not appear overwrought like some contemporary TV and movie designs.

So what happened to the blue grey uniforms in Ds9 and movies? Seems likes these are a step backwards.

Had they brought in Robert Blackman we probably would have seen that design updated in some way. What we have here is essentially a reimagining of the uniform from TNG Seasons 3 – 7.

Seems more reminiscent of DS9 Seasons 1 – 4 and Voyager uniforms with the colored shoulders and black everything else.

Yeah, I liked the three piece upper body part of the uniforms. Lots of options—jacket, vest and solid undershirt, or just solid undershirt. Looked spiffy.

TNG uniforms all the way, ive spent countless time, drawing those as a kid, very inspirational uniforms

Can we PLEASE get away from the broken delta? That’s literally my only complaint.

Mine too. That is truly my only complaint of this uniform. And while I prefer the final DS9 uniforms* to this, these are decent uniforms. But that “bifurcated delta” has to go.

*My favorite uniforms are the TWOK ones and the FC/DS9 ones. Uniform uniforms, HA!

Why not just modify the First Contact uniforms? Just work from those designs. Why the drastic and backward alteration? Even real life uniforms in the armed forced have not changed that much over the decades. Not very believable to be honest.

The 25% difference thing was an offhanded remark by John Eaves and it was an art directors note which had NOTHING to do with legality. He’s said that over and over but now some YouTube channel that thinks it knows better has manufactured a conspiracy theory out of it.

I get that kind of note all the time. “Make it X% different” It’s a verbal shorthand for “Can we get something different? Not sure how much but just make it visibly different than the last iteration.”

So damn frustrating.

Nice graphic, although some of the details are a little off. For example, you can see from the set photos that the coloured shoulders are not pointed in the way that they used to be; the ‘point’ is now flat, to match the little affectation at the front of the yoke. I quite like them. They, at least, follow the established uniform aesthetic that has gone before, unlike the actual Star Trek Online or Countdown versions.

Thankfully they’re back to a sensible rank display.

Looking again at one of the set photos, is it possible the combadges are different colors to match the uniform’s division coloring?

Looks like a DS9/VOY uniform altered to look more cartoonish. The “V” division color bump in the middle, the black shirt/turtleneck underneath… Meh

Will there be a dress uniform like the ones on the next generation? It would be net to see that one.

I get the impression that Starfleet is not factoring into this series in a huge way, so I suspect we won’t be getting much opportunity to be horrified about some minor design details.

Up Close With Star Trek: Picard 's Newest Uniform

Before Discovery launches itself into a far, far future , Star Trek: Picard will give us a glimpse of the furthest we’ve been in the main Star Trek timeline in quite a while. That doesn’t just mean old friends and changed heroes , it means some fancy new threads for Starfleet officers. And this weekend, we got a glimpse at one of Picard’s latest looks.

At Destination Star Trek this past weekend, fans were treated to the first official look at a new costume from Star Trek: Picard —Jean-Luc’s old Starfleet Admiral uniform. Well, old to him, because by the time the show’s begun, he’s retired from Starfleet. New to us, because it’s quite an update to what we’ve seen from past Admirals among the Federation’s ranks.

Included as part of a Picard -themed exhibit at the con—similar to one that cropped up at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year —the new uniform was included alongside props new and old depicting the life and times of Jean-Luc Picard, from his academy days to his retired life as a vintner at Chateau Picard. Yes, there was wine , of course. But you’re here for the costume!

It’s quite a divergence from the Admiral uniforms we saw in The Next Generation and eventually Deep Space Nine and Voyager , with the command red taking a backstep to the general black. There’s more in common with the formal dress uniforms worn by Starfleet officers of that era, with the lines of red taking cues from the shape of the jacket cut in the TNG and Voyager eras, more so than the stark white and gold uniforms eventually seen in the later years of DS9 and the TNG movies.

The date given for this version of the Admiral’s uniform was 2385, placing its use in Starfleet around 14 or so years before the events of Star Trek: Picard , itself set in roughly 2399—20 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis .

The timing is just a few years before we know Picard leaves Starfleet behind . One of the things we’ve known for the longest about the series is that he retires in the wake of the destruction of the planet Romulus, an event that happens in 2387. Whether we actually see Jean-Luc suit up in this uniform, however, remains to be seen.

Speaking at a panel at the convention, Stewart told fans to only expect to see Picard in Starfleet uniform for a couple of important scenes in the season—he’ll primarily be wearing civilian clothes, denoting his retired life. Given the trailers have shown at least one of them is during some kind of dream sequence with Data, whether we see this uniform on Picard himself or merely hanging up in his wardrobe at some point is unknown.

Where we likely won’t see it, however, is on the Starfleet Admirals of 2399. The trailers for Picard have given us brief glimpses at the uniforms Starfleet have adopted by that late 24th century time period to show that this design has now itself been replaced, a return to a similar grey jacket and colored undershirt that is more reminiscent of the uniforms seen in the second half of DS9 .

It would seem that, even in a time of uncertainty like the one we’re set to encounter in Star Trek: Picard , one constant you can count on is whichever tailor Starfleet Command hires certainly likes to keep busy! You can check out a few more pictures from the exhibition below.

Clearly influenced by the many years of Bob Blackman Starfleet uniform designs seen on television and in film throughout the 1990s, this 24th Century uniform created by  Picard costume designer Christine Clark  is the first new senior service wardrobe design of that era introduced since the late-Dominion War years, as Admirals such as Bill Ross and Kathryn Janeway appeared in uniforms based off the grey-shouldered design introduced in 1996’s Star Trek: First Contact .

This new design for Admiral Picard also debuted today in a first look at  Star Trek: Picard — Countdown  #3, the third and final issue in the soon-to-launch prequel comic series coming from IDW Publishing in November.

Created by artist Sara Pitre-Durocher , the comic cover features Jean-Luc Picard wearing this same uniform in a story set to shed light on the years which lead up to the  Star Trek: Picard era.

Curiously, we still haven’t gotten a good look at the new  Picard- era Starfleet duty uniform outside of a few fleeting glances in the New York Comic Con trailer that arrived earlier this month, but perhaps we’ll get that chance between now and late January when the series debuts.

Star Trek Actors & Executive Producers React To Peabody Award

Star trek returns to a ds9 & voyager location for the first time in 25 years, reacher season 3 will fix a problem that has plagued alan ritchson's hero from the beginning.

Patrick Stewart will be putting on an original Starfleet uniform in a  Star Trek: Picard flashback scene. One of several  Star Trek shows currently in production ,  Star Trek: Picard picks up on the life of Patrick Stewart's Jean-Luc Picard almost two decades after his last appearance in 2002's  Star Trek: Nemesis . Although the title character is retired when  Star Trek: Picard begins, the quiet vineyard life, unsurprisingly, doesn't suit the former Enterprise-D captain and this is where the spinoff's true tale kicks off.

The  Star Trek: Picard SDCC 2019 trailer  showcased plenty of new details, many of which came as hugely pleasant surprises to fans both in attendance and eagerly following the panel online. Most notably,  Star Trek: Picard will feature returns from a selection of familiar faces, including Brent Spiner as Data , Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine and Jonathan Del Arco as Hugh. Both Jonathan Frakes (Riker) and Marina Sirtis (Troi) have also been confirmed to appear. In terms of plot,  Star Trek: Picard will unite Stewart's character with a renegade space crew who are charged with protecting a young woman in danger.

While  Star Trek: Picard 's new crew are entirely non-sanctioned by Starfleet, Patrick Stewart confirmed in an SDCC interview with  TV Line that, despite initially insisting Picard would not wear a uniform on the show, he'd be slipping on an original, classic uniform during a flashback sequence. The legendary actor states:

"I did strongly make the point that I did not want to be in a uniform...at all... And I have just made myself look slightly foolish by insisting that in the end of next week's [filming] work, I will be in a uniform... Because it's a flashback and I said 'in order for this to have the right kind of context, I need to be in a uniform'"

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from this reveal is that  Star Trek: Picard will feature flashbacks to the character's time working for Starfleet. Considering the amount of time that has passed since Stewart last played the role, however, it's unclear whether these flashbacks will be the product of clever makeup and camerawork or digital de-aging. If the latter is used, then  Star Trek: Picard could potentially flashback as far as Picard's pre-Enterprise days on the Stargazer - exploring a largely unknown part of the character's on-screen history.

Perhaps a more likely explanation is that Stewart will wear a Starfleet uniform as part of his later career as an ambassador. Canon  Star Trek media charts Picard's time as Ambassador on the now- destroyed Romulus and this may be the period  Star Trek: Picard  opts to flash back to. Certainly this era would be easier to achieve in terms Patrick Stewart's appearance, and Alex Kurtzman has already referenced Picard's regret over Romulus when discussing the spinoff's direction and tone. Of course, it's also possible that  Star Trek: Picard will flashback to the  Next Generation years, possibly providing a new take on an older story.

Do Star Trek's Uniforms Change for Different Environments?

• Starfleet uniforms in Star Trek have evolved over the years, but they still maintain the iconic high-contrast color scheme.

Do the Starfleet uniforms on Star Trek change depending on the different environments that Star Trek characters go to? There have been multiple variations of the Starfleet uniform in every Star Trek show , and the most famous Starfleet uniforms evolved from the easily-recognizable contrast of a dark lower half and brightly colored top popularized by Star Trek: The Original Series . Similar iconic styles and color schemes were used on Star Trek: The Next Generation , Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , and Star Trek: Voyager , only swapping the red and gold associated with the command and operations divisions after the long run of the militaristic "Monster Maroon" Starfleet uniform.

Recent productions of Star Trek see the Starfleet uniforms undergoing rapid changes on a fairly regular basis, with a new Starfleet uniform seemingly issued every few years or so. Even after slight deviations, Starfleet keeps returning to the high-contrast uniforms that always seem to come back in fashion, with a particularly sharp 32nd-century Starfleet uniform in Star Trek: Discovery . There's no mistaking a Starfleet officer when you see one, but the bold colors that make Star Trek uniforms work so well on television could theoretically pose a problem in real-world situations, when away missions take Starfleet officers to unknown environments.

Star Treks Starfleet Uniform Colors: What They Mean & Why They Changed

Voyager's garrett wang wonders why star trek's uniforms don't change, neither starfleet nor star trek's aliens have camouflage uniforms.

On The Delta Flyers podcast, Star Trek: Voyager 's Harry Kim actor Garrett Wang pauses during a discussion of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 2, episode 1, "The Homecoming", to point out one of the major differences that Wang noticed between real-world military uniforms and the uniforms seen throughout Star Trek. This detail isn't limited to Starfleet's standard uniforms, since other Star Trek species seem to do the same thing. Read Wang's quote and listen to The Delta Flyers , starting at the 48:21 timestamp.

Garrett Wang: "One thing I've noticed about all of Star Trek that is not consistent with modern military organizations is that depending on the environment, the uniform changes color. But yet, in Trek, it's always the same. For instance, here they're in the quarry, they should've had stone gray Cardassian uniforms, but if our military goes to the desert, they have desert camo. But you don't see that on Star Trek. Whether it's Cardassian, or Starfleet, or Klingon, no one ever changes their fatigues. It's always the same."

Star Trek Uniforms Do Have Environmental Variants

Starfleet officers wear uniform variations when they need to.

Historically, Star Trek characters did wear the same Starfleet uniform on away missions and on starships, no matter what awaited the away team on unexplored planets. But that detail began to change when the 90s era of Star Trek introduced variant Starfleet uniforms designed for specific environments, like a gray rock climbing uniform in Star Trek: Voyager season 3, episode 16 "Blood Fever", or a lightweight Starfleet uniform designed for desert environments, seen in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 7, episode 2 "Shadows and Symbols". Both Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager included Starfleet standard-issue EV suits for hazardous conditions like space walks.

While they weren't tailored to a specific environment, per se, racing variants of the Starfleet uniform were worn by Lt. Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill), Lt. B'Elanna Torres (Roxann Dawson), and Ensign Harry Kim (Garrett Wang), in Star Trek: Voyager season 7, episode 3, "Drive".

The modern era of Star Trek expanded the possibilities for Starfleet uniforms designed for specific environments. Nearly every new Star Trek show featured extravehicular, field operations, athletic, or combat-ready versions of the Starfleet uniform. As an animated series, Star Trek: Lower Decks ran with even more variants, including specialized uniforms for rain, swamps, wetsuits, and skydiving. Most impressively, Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd-century technology allowed for immediate uniform adjustments according to planetary conditions, including hazard gear. While it was rare for Starfleet uniforms in any era to completely blend in with the environment, the characters on Star Trek were undoubtedly protected from harsh environments in style.

Star Trek Glossary: Every Starfleet Rank And Job Explained

"Star Trek" is, first and foremost, a workplace drama . It just so happens that the workplace is a high-tech, faster-than-light space vessel exploring distant regions of the galaxy. Working on a starship is a fine job indeed. Many classic "Star Trek" episodes deal with rank, the chain of command, and how certain captains employ their unique managerial styles to inspire the officers beneath them. The main characters in "Star Trek" mostly all belong to Starfleet, a military-like organization that uses naval ranks and nautical vocabulary to describe a starship's operations. 

To give the shows a touch of realism, the makers of "Star Trek" have (mostly) been careful to point out that a starship is a massively complex machine that requires hundreds of people to operate correctly. Additionally, the day-to-day logistics of running a starship require departments within departments, each one run by its own miniature team of officers, and with each team making sure that every small piece of equipment is operating at peak efficiency. Ideally, a starship can't be flown by a single person or even a scant bridge crew (I will happily ignore, however, the times that it was; those times don't count). 

Trekkies take a great deal of delight in tracing and detailing the various ranks and departments on board an average Starfleet vessel, mostly because it makes it easier to imagine actually working there someday. Yes, we know it's fictional, but so much detail had gone into rank, operation, and propriety on "Star Trek" that many viewers can picture where they might be able to practically work, what their rank might be, and whom they would answer to. 

For the laypeople reading, however, here is a brief rundown on the ranks, jobs, and positions one might encounter in "Star Trek."

The Starfleet ranks calling the shots

Here is the central chain of command withing Starfleet, listed from top to bottom.

At the top of Starfleet are the admirals. Admirals typically serve in official positions and don't usually command starships. They are essentially the management that starship captains have to report back to. The head of Starfleet — Commander in Chief — bears the top rank of Fleet Admiral . 

Below Fleet Admirals are just regular Admirals , which are plentiful in "Star Trek." 

Vice Admirals serve below them (the officer picture above bears the rank pips of a Vice Admiral), followed by Rear Admirals . 

A lesson: don't trust Admirals .

We don't see too many Commodores on "Star Trek," but they are the rank in between Captain and Admiral. 

Below the Commodores are Captains , who, as we all know, tend to command starships. The Captains can give orders to any officers on their ship. Captains tend to be the central characters of "Star Trek" shows, so we already know James T. Kirk, Jean-Luc Picard, Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula), and, most recently Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) on "Strange New Worlds."

Directly below the Captains are Commanders . A ship's first officer is a Commander, as are a few other key figures on a ship like a Chief Medical Officer or a Counselor. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) are Commanders.

Immediately below the Commanders are Lieutenant Commanders , who also tend to serve notable executive functions on a starship. People of lower ranks can indeed become members of a ship's senior staff (the "main" officers on a ship that spend the most amount of time on the bridge), but Lieutenant Commanders tend to be the lowest-ranking officers who still command their own departments on a ship.

The Starfleet ranks taking the orders

One might note that Starfleet officers wear color-coded uniforms. The colors represent the general departments in which they work. In the original series, officers on the command track wore gold uniforms, medical officers and science officers wore blue, and red was reserved for those who worked in engineering, security, or operations. In the era of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," red and gold uniforms switched .

There must, of course, be grunt workers and mid-managers below the department heads listed above, and that's where the lower-ranking, junior officers come in. 

Mere Lieutenants are immediately below Lieutenant Commanders. They may lead special projects or work on the bridge, but they take more orders than they give. 

Below them are officers ranked Lieutenant (Junior Grade) , followed by  Ensigns . To become a Starfleet officer, one must spend at least four years at Starfleet Academy. Graduates are typically promoted to the rank of Ensign and given their first assignments immediately. "Star Trek: Lower Decks" is all about Ensigns and Junior Grade Lieutenants like Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome).

Not every officer on a ship graduates from the Academy, however. One can enlist in Starfleet and become a Petty Officer. These people have their own subset of operational concerns, usually zeroed in on specific areas of the ship like the transporters, food services, or basic security. 

The Petty Officers have their own ranking system, starting — highest first — with Master Chief , then Senior Chief , followed by Chief , then Petty Officer First Class , and finally Petty Officer Second Class . Yeomans are petty officers who take care of paperwork for officers. Chief Miles O'Brien (Colm Meany) was a transporter expert. 

Other specialists — historians, botanists, etc. — can be Petty Officers. 

Back at Starfleet Academy, meanwhile, Cadets have their own ranking by year. Freshmen are 4th Class , sophomores are 3rd Class , juniors are 2nd Class , and seniors are 1st Class . For a large portion of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) was a cadet. This was after he already held a position as Acting Ensign , a provisional rank given in the field.

Starfleet Command and Bridge positions

One might have noticed watching the original "Star Trek" that Lieutenant Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) always sits at the same station on the bridge of the Enterprise, as does Sulu (George Takei), Chekov (Walter Koenig) , and Spock (Leonard Nimoy). This is because they have been assigned one of the many official bridge positions on a Starfleet vessel. The positions must be filled, regardless of an officer's rank. 

The Commanding Officer on a starship is usually the captain. The (non-capitalist) buck stops with them. 

Answering directly to the captain, and communicating most directly with the crew is the Executive Officer or the First Officer, usually bearing the rank of commander. 

Third in command is the Second Officer , who can also hold other operational positions; on "Star Trek: Voyager," for instance, Tuvok (Tim Russ) serves as both Second Officer and Security Chief. 

Sitting in front of the captain and piloting the ship are the Helmsman at conn to the captain's right and the Operations Officer at Ops to the captain's left. 

The Helmsman may also be officially the ship's Navigation Officer , an expert in spatial physics and stellar cartography. Expert pilots likely sit at the conn, but also may be selected to pilot smaller, supporting crafts like shuttles or runabouts. These officers are sometimes appointed the Chief of Flight Control . Example: Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) on "Voyager."

In charge of hailing vessels, translating, and sending coded messages is the Communications Officer . On the original series, Uhura was a dedicated Communications Officer, while on "Next Generation" and beyond, other officers took on communications as part of their jobs. Worf (Michael Dorn) served as both Communications Officer and Security Chief.

Starfleet Science and Medical positions

Most Starfleet vessels are devoted to research and explorations, and there are multiple departments — and corresponding commanding officers — tasked with overseeing the details. 

A ship's Science Officer is in charge of research and serves as coordinator of all the ship's specialized science fields. Science Officers must have a head for numbers and objective detail. On the original "Star Trek," Spock served as the Science Officer and the Executive Officer. On "Voyager," Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) served as a Science Officer, and she only held the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer. 

A ship's Chief Operations Officer is like the Science Officer but oversees the technical aspects of the ship, including engineering, the engines, the life support, and other vital systems. Like the Science Officer, it helps that the Chief Ops Officer has a mind for technical details. On "Next Generation," Data served as Chief of Ops and worked closely with the Chief Engineer (which we'll get to in a minute).

Also, because a ship is full of biological organisms, it's important that their health be maintained. Every ship has a medical department overseen by an indispensable Chief Medical Officer , the only officer on the ship who can give orders to the Captain. Each medical department also has a network of experts and nurses, including the Head Nurse like Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) on "Strange New Worlds" or Nurse Ogawa (Patti Yasutake) on "Next Generation." There may sometimes be a Head of Surgery , or perhaps a dedicated pathologist or epidemiologist. For the most part, though, the Chief Medical Officer takes care of many of these things themselves.

Starfleet Security and Combat Positions

Starfleet vessels are dedicated to peace, diplomacy, and study, but there are still violent, antagonistic species in the galaxy, and Starfleet isn't always on the best terms with them. As such, each Starfleet vessel requires experts in on-ship security, ship-to-ship tactics, and weapons operations. 

Every ship will have a Chief of Security , responsible for confronting intruders, enforcing the on-ship laws, and perhaps throwing ruffians into the ship's brig. The Chief Security Officer often also serves as the Strategic Operations Officer , who sits at the tactical position and fires weapons at the captain's command. Worf and Tuvok were in charge of these positions on their respective shows. They tend to go on the most away missions, keeping the other officers safe. They are the only officers on the ship who are always armed. Odo (René Auberjonois) served as chief of security on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," but he wasn't a Starfleet officer. He worked for the Bajoran government, and they implemented a different military system altogether.

As mentioned above, basic security officers are not Starfleet Academy graduates, and typically serve as Petty Officers, answering only to the Chief of Security. 

Starfleet Engineering and Technology Positions

As mentioned above, the Chief Operations Officer coordinates the technical aspects of the ship, but the hands-on officer in charge of a starship's massive engine room is the Chief Engineer , the one who actually makes repairs and oversees all of the other repairmen. No ship can function without a Chief Engineer overseeing all of the other engineers on the ship, busily readjusting and calibrating the physical machinery used to make the Enterprise go. 

The Chief Engineer might oversee technical experts, such as Warp Engineers (who oversee the faster-than-light engines), Impulse Engineers (who oversee the sub-light engines), those who oversee shields, transporters, electrics, life support, food replicators, lighting, gravity, or just about anything with a technical component. Thanks to "Next Generation," Trekkies know all about a dedicated Transporter Chief . There will also be an officer dedicated to Environmental Controls (especially important if your ship hosts species from hotter or colder worlds than Earth), and one devoted to Computer Operations , which might be the "Star Trek" equivalent of the I.T. repair guy. Heck, one might even find an engineer devoted to Holography systems, an expert in repairing holodecks. 

"Star Trek" doesn't feature a lot of tool belts, but if it did, the Engineering department would wear them. 

Kudos to LeVar Burton, who played Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge on "Next Generation." More than any other actor, he needed to memorize Trek's well-worn, multisyllabic techno-jargon. He talked a lot about warp fields, phase coils, plasma inducers, dilithium crystals, and every other high-tech widget on the Enterprise. And of course, everyone loved Scotty (James Doohan) from the original series.

Other Starfleet Positions

All the above departments are devoted to the vital function of a Starfleet vessel and the health of a vessel's crew. There are also various ancillary positions on a ship devoted to either comfort or just basic organization.

In the days before replicators , Starfleet vessels required  Quartermasters or Supply Operations Officers to distribute physical objects to the crew. The Quartermasters would distribute emergency rations, spare uniforms, tricorders, and medical widgets. These would be the ones holding the stock clipboards. Despite "Star Trek" taking place in a technical utopia free of want, there are still only so many scanners and tricorders that can go around. Starships also require dedicated officers to oversee the cargo bays where shuttles and extra supplies are stored, hence a head of  Cargo Operations . 

Being the Waste Management Officer on a starship isn't too terrible, although one does have to clean out the poop filters occasionally. The poop is then salvaged, broken down, and converted into energy. That energy is used in a ship's food replicators. Yes, Starfleet officers eat their own poop . On "Lower Decks," Mariner is seen cleaning the waste filters out of the holodeck on the U.S.S. Cerritos. It's a gross job.

Not every ship has a specialized department for every situation, so other specialists may be called in as needed. During times of war or combat, for instance, a ship may be assigned an Intelligence Officer . This depends on the ship's current mission, of course. For diplomatic envoys, a ship may also be assigned a general Special Services officer to make sure negotiators and treaty signers are comfortable.

And, perhaps most importantly, many ships have a Counselor . On "Next Generation," Counselor Troi (Marina Sirtis) sits right on the bridge. On other ships, they have their own offices. They take care of a crew's overall mental health, serve as para-diplomats, and work with the Chief Medical Officer.

Why Wesley Crusher Left Star Trek, and Why He Came Back

Wil Wheaton's Wesley Crusher disappeared from Star Trek: The Next Generation, but he came back for select episodes, movies, and Picard. Here's why.

Despite running for seven seasons and keeping a grueling filming schedule, the central cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation didn't experience much turnover. In fact, of the regular cast who appeared in the series premiere and the series finale, only one character was absent. Wesley Crusher (played by Wil Wheaton) left Star Trek: The Next Generation early in the fourth season for a mix of personal and professional reasons. Still, Wesley returned a handful of times, and Wil Wheaton is still an active participant in Gene Roddenberry's universe. Despite Wheaton's unbridled enthusiasm for all things Star Trek and his experiences as part of The Next Generation family, his time playing the character wasn't the nerd's dream everyone thought it was.

The fans were harshly critical of Wesley Crusher , and the line "Shut up, Wesley!" from Season 1, Episode 13 became an early internet meme. In a promotional special, The Star Trek Saga: From One Generation to the Next , Roddenberry said the genesis of the character was himself at age 14, and "Wesley" was his middle name. Though, the Great Bird of the Galaxy admitted he was never the genius the eventual Starfleet cadet was in the series. Despite these struggles with Wesley Crusher's character, it was behind-the-scenes problems that inspired Wheaton to leave Star Trek: The Next Generation .

REVIEW: Star Trek: Picard: The Art & Making of the Series Tells the Story Behind the Story

Wesley was the only son of Doctor Beverly Crusher and her late husband Jack, the best friend of Captain Picard. He was a deeply curious boy, but he was often treated harshly by the crew and its captain. In the sixth episode of Season 1, "Where No Man Has Gone Before," Wesley befriends and impresses the mysterious Traveler, an alien with strange abilities. At the end of that episode, despite his disdain for children, Captain Picard promotes Wesley to "Acting Ensign" allowing him to serve on the bridge in advance of his application to Starfleet Academy.

Wesley's time in Starfleet Academy was tumultuous despite his genius and experience serving on the Enterprise. He failed the entrance exam the first time he took it, though so did Captain Picard. Once he was accepted, he left the ship and only appeared in a few episodes. While at the Academy, he joined Nova Squadron led by Nick Locarno . He was part of a cover-up with the squad, hiding the death of a classmate while performing a forbidden flight maneuver. After admitting the truth, he had to repeat that year at the Academy.

In Star Trek: TNG's final season , Wesley Crusher returned to the Enterprise on leave from the Academy. His grades were dropping, and he was in danger of failing out of the program. He challenged Starfleet's and the captain's orders in order to stand up for a colony of Native Americans being forcibly removed from their home to appease the Cardassians. He experienced a vision of his father, Jack, telling him Starfleet wasn't his path. Instead, Wesley joined the Traveler to ascend to "another plane of existence" paying off the arc that began in the first season. What that meant, however, remained a mystery .

How Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Connects to TNG's Biggest Open Mystery

The youngest TNG character went through some changes in development. Legendary Star Trek producer Robert H. Justman lobbied to make "Wesley" into "Leslie," according to Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion by Larry Nemecek, but Roddenberry eventually overruled the decision. They also struggled to come up with a justification for why this young man was so special, earning a coveted position on the bridge. In a memo, Justman wrote that Wesley's youth gave him a brash, assertive nature the adults on the crew lacked, making him "a one-man 'think tank' without pre-conditioned limitations.'"

Despite LeVar Burton's iconic role in Roots and the popularity of Reading Rainbow , it was Wil Wheaton who was the "big name" in the cast . Best known as Gordie in Stand By Me , the burgeoning movie star jumped at the chance to be in The Next Generation . "I was a Trekkie," Wheaton said in The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years by Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman. However, Wheaton said that even he was annoyed by how Wesley was written, calling him "pretentious." When he was offered a role in a film directed by Milos Forman, The Next Generation producers wouldn't let him do it. They told him he was going to be in a "really important to the series" episode during the filming window, but Wheaton said the producer "just lied to me." Wheaton also revealed that "years later," Deanna Troi actor Marina Sirtis told him she'd heard the producers were worried the film would make him an even bigger star.

If Wheaton's star rose, "it would have been harder for them to deal with me. I felt so betrayed by that," he said in The Fifty-Year Mission . Despite his love of Star Trek , this slight made Wheaton desperate to leave the series . However, in his memoir, Still Just a Geek , Wheaton detailed how his parents pushed him into acting in the first place, when he wanted "to just be a kid." This neglect, plus instances of abuse on various sets, particularly The Curse , soured him on the profession for many years. Still, Wheaton also maintains his fellow cast on The Next Generation are like family to him. Their love and support helped him and helps explain why he returned to the show for guest-spots. Returning was "like coming home for me," he told Entertainment Tonight in 1992. "I always have a terrific time [on set.] I adore the cast."

How Star Trek: The Next Generation Disserviced This Fan-Favorite Character

Despite leaving Starfleet and going off with the Traveler in "Journey's End," Wesley Crusher almost returned. Wheaton filmed scenes for Star Trek: Nemesis at the wedding of Riker and Troi. Wesley was again a Starfleet officer and slated for duty aboard Riker's ship, the USS Titan. However, the scene was cut from the film . In Still Just A Geek , Wheaton wrote about the experience. Even though it ignored Wesley's final episode on The Next Generation , Wheaton enjoyed the experience working with the cast as an adult. While it might have seemed like another slight by Star Trek producers, cutting the scene worked to the advantage of the character.

In Star Trek: Picard Season 2, Wesley Crusher appeared in the 21st Century to Isa Briones's character Kore Soong. He explained that he was part of a group called "the Travelers" who worked to protect the universe, all of reality from "annihilation." It's a difficult job apparently, since the last time Wesley made a joke he apparently changed a century of history. While the Travelers mostly observe, knowing when to act is a crucial part of their task. He recruited Kore into the group, and when she accepted, they both beamed away. The beaming effect was not like those audiences have seen from Starfleet or other species and organizations in the galaxy.

It seems Wesley Crusher and the Travelers were connected to Talinn, played by Orla Brady, in Picard Season 2 . She watched over Reneé Picard whose destiny was even more important than her famous starship captain ancestor. The group can also trace itself back to the Season 2 episode of Star Trek: The Original Series "Assignment: Earth" that introduced Gary Seven . An attempt at a spinoff series by Gene Roddenberry, Gary was a not-so-ordinary human tasked with protecting the 20th Century, specifically the space program.

Star Trek The Next Generation: When Does TNG Get Good?

Outside of this brief appearance on Picard , Wil Wheaton's involvement with the Star Trek universe has been as a professional fan . As the host of The Ready Room he talks to the actors, producers and others about making this third wave of series. His charm and grace put his guests at ease, because while he's still very much a fan of Star Trek , he's also been where they were. His time on the set and playing Wesley Crusher was both joyous and troubling. Ironically, the character that adult fans hated the most when he debuted is now the best ambassador to the Star Trek fanbase they have.

While Wheaton still does some on-camera work, he's mostly done voice acting of late. Still, Picard Season 3 introduced his half-brother Jack Crusher. Wheaton seemed enthused by the idea of teaming up with actor Ed Speelers for a "Crusher brothers" adventure , either a series or feature. Wesley Crusher's appearance at the end of Season 2 was a lovely coda for a character who deserved better . If that's all fans get, it might be enough. But after all these years, fans would likely be very excited to see Wesley again, especially if he's teaming up with Jack.
