How to get to Liberty State Park, New Jersey

There are many ways to get to Liberty State Park.

Liberty State Park in New Jersey is the perfect departure location for visiting the ferry dock by car, motorhome, or private bus.

Liberty State Park is also amply serviced by public transportation, taxi, and Liberty Landing Ferry Service.

By Light Rail

The  Hudson–Bergen Light Rail  (HBLR) is a light rail system in Hudson County, New Jersey.

Get to Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, which runs through the Jersey City and New Jersey area, and get down at the  Liberty State Park station .

HBLR to Liberty State Park

This station is 1.6 km (1 mile) from the ferry location, and since there is no public transport option, it is best to get an Uber.

Liberty State Park station to CRRNJ Terminal

An Uber can take you to the Statue Cruises ticket office in the CRRNJ Terminal for approximately US$12.

Driving to Liberty State Park

You can also reach Liberty State Park by vehicle. From the New Jersey Turnpike, take exit 14-B and follow the signs to the Park.

Park at the free Statue of Liberty Parking and take a brisk six-minute walk to the CRRNJ Terminal.

The park closes at 10 pm, and you must pick up your car before that.

Free parking at Liberty State Park

To avoid walking, you can use the paid parking slots near Liberty State Park’s ferry dock for $7 per car.

Designated spots for those with official placards are also available at the lot.

By Liberty Landing Ferry Service

The Liberty Landing Ferry is a fast, affordable, and efficient alternative across the Hudson.

It is the perfect mode of transport if you come from the New York side because it offers a two-mile promenade along the Hudson River with stunning views of the Manhattan skyline.

Liberty Landing Ferry Service to NJ

You can board the ferry from the World Financial Terminal in New York and get to the Liberty Landing Marina at Liberty State Park, NJ.

On weekdays, the ferry service starts at 6.30 am and runs every hour until 6.30 pm, while on weekends, the first ferry departs at 9.30 am, with the last ferry at 6.30 pm.

Each ride lasts approximately 20 minutes.

Liberty Landing Ferry’s ticket prices

Reservations are not required for the Liberty Landing Ferry. Tickets can be purchased on board using cash or credit cards.

Visitors with ferry tickets to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island get a US$2 discount on Liberty Landing Ferry Service tickets.

Statue of Liberty ferry schedule from New Jersey

Every 20 to 25 minutes, a ferry leaves Liberty State Park to go to Ellis Island.

The first ferry from Liberty State Park sets sail at 8.30 am during the mid-March to mid-October high season.

Since the Statue of Liberty’s closing hours differ throughout the year, the last ferry’s timing from Liberty State Park in New Jersey also changes.

Avoiding the last Statue of Liberty ferry from New Jersey is better.

Tourists taking the last ferry from Liberty State Park face a choice: they can either visit the Statue of Liberty or the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, but not both.

Boarding the Statue of Liberty ferry from New Jersey

A Statue of Liberty ferry ticket is required to board the ferry from either New Jersey or New York.

Statue of Liberty Ferry ticket.jpg

All ferry tickets include the following:

  • The ferry ride to Liberty Island, Ellis Island, and back to the Mainland
  • Access to the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island
  • Access to the Statue of Liberty Museum on Liberty Island
  • Access to the National Museum of Immigration on Ellis Island
  • Audio Guide*

*The Audio Guide, available in 12 languages, can be picked up from the Audio Guide booth at both Liberty and Ellis Islands.

Since the Statue of Liberty is the main attraction, visitors often refer to ferry tickets as “ Statue of Liberty tickets .”

Liberty Ferry ticket office in Liberty State Park train terminal

While you can purchase these tickets at the Statue Cruises ticket office inside the historic train terminal in Liberty State Park, we don’t recommend it for two main reasons:

  • The ticket counters often have long lines.
  • Certain types of tickets sell out quickly, so it’s smarter to buy them online in advance.

All visitors with tickets must undergo an airport-style security screening and wait in line to board the ferry. Depending on the season and time of day, the wait can range from five to twenty minutes.

To minimize your waiting time in line, please book your Statue of Liberty cruise tickets online in advance.

Statue of Liberty ferry tickets

There are three types of Statue of Liberty ferry tickets to choose from: Crown tickets, Pedestal tickets, and Reserve tickets.

Types of Statue of Liberty ferry tickets

While Crown and Pedestal tickets are less in demand, they are also more difficult to obtain.

Reserve tickets, also known as ‘Grounds Only’ tickets, are the most popular and widely available option.

Reserve tickets

These Reserve tickets give you access to both the Statue of Liberty and the Immigration Museum and include a roundtrip ferry service from New Jersey (or New York).

You can explore the Statue of Liberty from the grounds around it and visit the Liberty Museum.

You can’t go up to the Pedestal or the Crown.

Important: Since you want to board the ferry from New Jersey, please select ‘Reserve Line Ticket from New Jersey’ on the ticket booking page.

Ticket price

Adult ticket (13 to 61 years):  US$32.50 Seniors ticket (62+ years):  US$28 Child ticket (4 to 12 years):  US$22.50 Infant ticket (up to 3 years): Free

If you are willing to board from Battery Park, New York, you can book a  complete guided tour of the Statue of Liberty .

Things to know about Liberty ferry from NJ

Once you are on the ferry, keep your ferry ticket with you until your return.

While there are outlets on the ferry selling food, drinks, and merchandise, we recommend focusing on the stunning views instead. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to shop and dine at the outlets on both islands.

All Statue of Liberty boats departing from Liberty State Park in New Jersey follow this route: first, they stop at Ellis Island, home to the Immigration Museum. Next, they head to Liberty Island, where the Statue of Liberty stands, before returning to Liberty State Park.

Route of Liberty Ferry from New Jersey

Whether you start from Liberty State Park in New Jersey or Battery Park in New York , the ferry ride to Liberty Island typically takes 15 minutes or less.

The ferry ride from Liberty Island to Ellis Island also takes about 15 minutes.

If you stay on the boat for the entire round trip without visiting either monument, the journey will last about one hour and fifteen minutes.

We recommend dressing in layers, as this trip is mostly outdoors and the weather can change quickly.

Watch this video to learn what to expect on your trip from New Jersey to the Statue of Liberty:

Note: During peak seasons (summer months), the wait to board a ferry can be up to 60 minutes.

Return ferry to Liberty State Park, New Jersey

You can board a return ferry to Liberty State Park at any time—after exploring one island or visiting attractions on both islands.

There’s no need to return to your original departure point. For instance, if you have plans in New York, you can board the ferry to Battery Park instead of returning to New Jersey.

Your Statue of Liberty ferry ticket is flexible for return trips. However, ensure you use the correct boarding location on each island.

If you accidentally board the ferry bound for New York instead of New Jersey, don’t worry. Once you arrive at Battery Park, you can take a short walk and board the Liberty Landing Ferry Service to return to New Jersey.

Liberty Landing Ferry Service is a convenient water taxi between Manhattan and Liberty State Park.

I just booked (2) 4-hour, guided-tour tickets to pedestal, etc., and only when I got the confirmation email of the purchase did I find out that the this tour (leaving at 8:30, 9:30 or 12:30P) actually meets at Battery Park, NOT Freedom State Park (NJ). Please add this information to your (otherwise excellent) review to avoid people ordering, then immediately canceling their tickets (as I just did) if they must leave from Freedom State Park (the Jersey side). Thanks.

Thank you JJ. Glad we were able to answer all your queries.

As for the guided tour, which was starting from Battery Park, we have removed it. Thank you for the heads up.

EXCELLENT travelog for this adventure!! I can’t think of any questions left to answer. Now…if only you could buy a ticket that guarantees excellent, sunny weather when you take this tour! We’ve got a one-day shot at the tour on our way through in early October (2021) so we’re ‘putting in our order’ early! LOL. A great review…well done!

Ticket Purchases for the Statue of Liberty (A Visitors Guide)

The Statue of Liberty is a must-visit landmark for any traveler heading to New York City. As one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world, getting tickets to visit this iconic monument requires some planning. This article will guide you through the various options available to purchase tickets for the Statue of Liberty.

The Official Ticket Vendor: Statue Cruises

Statue Cruises , the official ticket vendor for the Statue of Liberty National Monument on Liberty Island and Ellis Island, is the primary and most reliable ticket source. It's the only ferry provider authorized to dock at Liberty and Ellis Islands, making it a preferred choice for visitors.

You can purchase tickets directly from their website , booths in Battery Park in New York and Liberty State Park in New Jersey, or the  Get Your Guide website. Online purchasing is highly recommended, especially during peak tourist season, as it allows you to bypass the ticket line and secure a spot on your preferred tour.

The tickets from Statue Cruises come in different tiers, each offering varying levels of access to the monument:

Reserve Ticket: This basic ticket provides ferry access to Liberty Island and Ellis Island, audio tours, and entrance to the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. However, it doesn't include entry into the Statue of Liberty.

Pedestal Ticket: This ticket includes everything from the Reserve Ticket plus access to the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, which houses the museum showcasing the statue's original torch and other exhibits.

Crown Ticket: The most premium ticket includes all the benefits of the Pedestal Ticket plus access to the crown of the Statue of Liberty. These limited tickets often sell out months in advance, so early booking is essential.

Buying from Statue Cruises ensures legitimate tickets at standard prices. It also provides a comprehensive visitor experience, including informative audio tours in multiple languages. The ferries have amenities like restrooms and concession stands, making the trip comfortable and convenient.

Remember, all tickets include access to both Liberty and Ellis Islands, but the monument access (pedestal or crown) is only available on Liberty Island. It's essential to plan your itinerary accordingly to make the most of your visit.

Exploring with Guided Tours: Enhance Your Experience

Another excellent option for obtaining Statue of Liberty tickets and ensuring an enriching experience is guided tours. These tours are often led by knowledgeable guides who can provide interesting insights and historical context that you might not get from a self-guided visit.

Several private tour companies offer guided visits to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. These tours often include ferry tickets, access to the pedestal or crown (depending on the tour), and the services of a professional tour guide.

When booking with a private tour operator, consider the following:

Check Reviews: Look at online reviews to ensure the tour operator is reputable and provides a quality experience.

Compare Prices: Tour prices can vary significantly between operators. Make sure to compare prices and what's included in the tour.

Check Availability: Some tours, especially crown access, can sell out weeks in advance. Check the availability for your desired date and book early.

Understand the Itinerary: Each tour can offer a different experience. Some may include additional stops or provide more in-depth coverage of certain aspects. Please understand what the tour includes and whether it meets your interests.

Guided tours can provide a unique perspective and a more comprehensive understanding of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Whether you choose an official Park Ranger tour or a private tour operator, a guided tour can significantly enhance your visit.

Buying Tickets In-Person: What You Need to Know

While purchasing your tickets online is the easiest and most efficient way to secure your itinerary, buying tickets on the day of your visit is possible. This can be done at the official Statue Cruises ticket booths in Battery Park in New York City and Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey.

In Battery Park, the ticket booth is located inside Castle Clinton, a historic fort that now serves as a national monument. Liberty State Park's ticket booth is located by the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal.

Here are a few things to keep in mind if you decide to purchase your tickets in person:

Arrive Early: Especially during the peak tourist season, tickets can sell out quickly. Arrive early in the day to secure your tickets and avoid disappointment.

Prepare for Lines: Depending on the time of year and day of the week, there may be long lines at the ticket booths. Be prepared for potentially lengthy waits.

Limited Ticket Options: If you plan to visit the pedestal or crown of the Statue of Liberty, note that these tickets often sell out well in advance. Therefore, in-person ticket purchases may only secure you a Reserve Ticket, which provides ferry access and entry to the Ellis Island Immigration Museum but no access to the monument's interior.

Payment Methods: The ticket booths accept most major credit cards and cash.

Buying your tickets in person can be viable if you visit spontaneously or prefer to pay in cash. However, purchasing your tickets in advance from the official online vendor is highly recommended for the best experience and to ensure you get the level of access you want.

Combo Tickets: Maximizing Your NYC Experience

If you plan to visit multiple attractions in New York City, consider purchasing combo tickets. These tickets provide access to the Statue of Liberty at a discounted rate and can be a cost-effective way to explore the city and its highlights.

Official Combo Tickets

Statue Cruises, the official ticket vendor, offers combo tickets, including visits to the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island. While these are technically two separate attractions, the ticket includes ferry access to both islands, allowing you to explore both landmarks in one day.

City Passes

City passes, like the GoCity or CityPASS , offer admission to multiple attractions, including the Statue of Liberty, for one flat rate. These passes can be a good deal if you're planning to visit several attractions included in the pass. Be sure to check what type of access to the Statue of Liberty is included. Some passes only have the ferry ride and grounds access, not access to the pedestal or crown.

Tour Company Combo Tickets

Some tour companies offer combo tickets, including a visit to the Statue of Liberty and other attractions, such as a city bus tour, the 9/11 Memorial, or a cruise around Manhattan. These combo tickets can offer a more comprehensive exploration of New York City and the convenience of a single purchase.

When considering combo tickets, remember to:

Evaluate Your Interests: Make sure the other attractions included in the combo ticket are places you want to visit.

Consider Your Schedule: Combo tickets can offer value but require time. Ensure you have enough time to visit all the included attractions in a timely manner.

Compare Prices: Check the cost of individual tickets to the attractions you want to visit against the cost of the combo ticket to ensure you're getting a good deal.

Tips for Buying Statue of Liberty Tickets

Purchasing tickets to see the Statue of Liberty can be straightforward, but knowing some insider tips can help make the process smoother and ensure you get the most out of your visit.

Plan in Advance

The Statue of Liberty is one of the most popular tourist destinations in New York City. Tickets, especially those that include pedestal or crown access, can sell out weeks or even months in advance. Purchasing your tickets as far in advance as possible is best to avoid disappointment. This is especially true during peak tourist season (late spring to early fall) and around holidays.

Choose the Right Ticket for You

Please take a look at what you want from your visit. If you're going to experience the incredible view from the crown, where you can experience the full height of the Statue of Liberty , remember that tickets are limited and sell out quickly. Pedestal tickets are more readily available but still require planning. If you're more interested in the views of the statue from the ferry and the island, reserve tickets are your best option and are also easier to obtain.

Be Wary of Third-Party Sellers

Tickets purchased from unauthorized third-party vendors might not be legitimate, leading to potential disappointment. Please stick with the official vendor or trusted tour companies to ensure your tickets are valid.

Check the Weather

Ferry rides to the Statue of Liberty can be less enjoyable in poor weather, and views from the crown are much better on clear days. While you can't control the weather, you should check the forecast before you book.

Arrive Early

The security screening process before boarding the ferry can take some time, especially during peak tourist season. Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure to make sure you make your ferry.

Consider Combo Tickets

If you plan to visit multiple NYC attractions, combo tickets can provide significant savings. Just ensure the combo ticket offers the kind of access to the Statue of Liberty you're interested in.

Q1: What are the different types of tickets available for the Statue of Liberty?

A1: Several types of tickets are available for the Statue of Liberty. The most common ones include Reserve Tickets (which grant access to Liberty Island and Ellis Island), Pedestal Access Tickets (which also allow access to the pedestal of the Statue), and Crown Access Tickets (which will enable you to climb up to the crown of the Statue).

Q2: How far in advance should I purchase my Statue of Liberty tickets?

A2: It's generally recommended to buy your tickets at least a few weeks in advance, especially if you want to visit the pedestal or crown of the Statue. These tickets are often sold out months in advance during peak tourist season.

Q3: Where can I buy official tickets for the Statue of Liberty online?

A3: Official tickets for the Statue of Liberty can be purchased online from the Statue Cruises website, the only authorized ticket vendor for the Statue of Liberty National Monument.

Q4: Can I buy tickets for the Statue of Liberty in person?

A4: You can buy tickets in person at the Statue Cruises ticket booth in Battery Park in New York or Liberty State Park in New Jersey. However, availability is limited, and tickets are sold on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Q5: What are combo tickets, and how can they benefit my visit to the Statue of Liberty?

A5: Combo tickets include access to the Statue of Liberty along with one or more additional attractions or tours, such as the Ellis Island Immigration Museum or a New York City sightseeing tour. These can offer good value if you're planning to visit multiple attractions.

Q6: What is included in a guided tour of the Statue of Liberty?

A6: Guided tours of the Statue of Liberty typically include a knowledgeable guide who provides historical context and interesting facts about the statue. They also often have priority access to the ferry and the statue, helping you bypass long lines.

Q7: What should I know before buying tickets from third-party sellers?

A7: Be cautious when buying tickets from third-party sellers. Statue Cruises is the only official vendor for Statue of Liberty tickets, and purchasing from other sources may lead to overpriced tickets or potential scams.

Q8: What are some tips to remember when buying tickets to the Statue of Liberty?

A8: Remember to buy tickets to visit the pedestal or crown well in advance. Check the weather on the day of your visit, as boat service may be suspended in poor conditions. Lastly, remember that security is tight – certain items are not allowed on the island, and all visitors must undergo security screening.

Explore the Historic Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal

Stop by the Central Jersey Railroad of New Jersey Terminal to learn how New Jersey played a role in a formative time in our country. From 1892 through 1954, the Terminal stood with the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island to unfold one of this nation’s most dramatic stories—the immigration of northern, southern, and eastern Europeans, among others, into the United States. After being greeted by the Statue of Liberty and processed at Ellis Island, these immigrants purchased tickets and boarded trains at the Terminal, taking them to their new homes throughout the United States. It is estimated that the Terminal accommodated between 30,000-50,000 people per day at the turn of the century.

Catch waves on the Ferry to Ellis Island and The Statue of Liberty

Want to see the city and NJ from a new perspective? A ferry ride tour may be an adventure for you. Docking at Liberty State Park, the ferries offer transportation across the Hudson to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island—one ferry ticket provides both islands access—with spectacular views. You’ll also learn about the history of each island with audio guides for free for all ages. And to make sure you’re getting the real deal, check out the preferred ferry company, Statue Cruises, to avoid overpriced or fake tickets. Tickets are free for children under 3, $16 for children 4-12, $25 for adults 13+, and $22 for seniors.

Get some energy out at the Liberty State Park playground

Where else can you enjoy the Manhattan skyline while the kids play? The stunning views surround the connecting climbing structures centered by a fun sailing ship (and cute whale) that will wow kids big and small. Plus, the location is close to other attractions, including Liberty Walk, a picnic area, and the Interpretive Center, so that you can plan the rest of your day accordingly.

Picnic on the lawn with views of NYC and The Statue Of Liberty

With tons of lawn space, Liberty State Park is a quintessential backdrop for a cute picnic with the family and a mini-photo op. Go ahead and pack your favorite lunch treats and a blanket to spread out on the lawn. If you’re not feeling the lawn, set up your spread on a nearby picnic table with a grill. For bigger groups (20+), you’ll need to reserve a spot ahead, but you can find plenty of shady spots with sweeping views for your family.

Bring your fishing poles and crab nets

Surprise—you don’t have to go to the shore for fishing and crabbing. The Upper New York Bay and Hudson River have excellent opportunities for your little ones to catch something, including bluefish, shad, striped bass, and blue claw crabs.

Hike the Hudson River Estuary Wildlife Trails

Adjacent to the Interpretive Center lies a 36-acre State Natural Area consisting mainly of salt marsh, one of the few remaining Hudson River Estuary tidal marshes. A self-guided nature path offers opportunities to observe and experience this unique wildlife habitat.

There are plenty of promenades and open spaces for kids to run around. Photo Credit: iStock/Vivvi Smak

Play eye-spy along the Waterside Promenade

At the Azalea Garden, you’ll find a bunch of azaleas and rhododendrons around a big reflecting pool that’s filled with beautiful pink lotus and lily pads. In the spring, the double-flowering dogwood takes center stage, while the Japanese maple is not to be missed in the fall. Your kids will love to see their mirrored image in the water below as they view the lily pads and lotus in the reflecting pool.

Take a class at the Liberty State Park Interpretive Center

Want to learn a little more about the nature reserve around you? The Nature Center is an excellent way for kids to get a lesson about the environment. The center features exhibits focusing on the natural history and ecology of the Hudson River Estuary and offers programs for school and community groups and the general public.

Unlock your inner scientist at Liberty Science Center

Situated within the park, Liberty Science Center is jam-packed with fun, interactive activities for all ages to inspire curiosity and wonder—you won’t hear “I’m bored!” Explore the innovative and interactive galleries, including a suspended climbing maze 35 feet above the floor, a pitch-black maze, exotic animals like piranhas and naked mole rats, and the biggest planetarium in the Western Hemisphere with an 89-foot diameter screen. With an ever-changing roster of exhibits,  Liberty Science Center is a museum your kids will have a ball (and even learn a thing or two).

Reflect at the Empty Sky Memorial

Take a moment to visit the twin walls at the Empty Sky Memorial , which gives a clear-cut view of Ground Zero. The length of each wall at the memorial is precisely equal to one side of the former World Trade Center Towers, as the wall’s height reflects the proportion of the former buildings sideways. Seven hundred and forty-nine New Jersey residents who lost their lives on 9/11 are honored on the stainless steel walls, giving any visitor pause as they look at them.
