WHEN TO SURF IN PORTUGAL

When is the best time to travel to portugal an overview per region and per month ..

What are the best months to surf in Portugal? And do you need a wetsuit? And which wetsuit is the best?

Northern Portugal

See the wave  statistics for Espinho below. One of the best surfing spots in Northern Portugal near Porto. This environment is especially nice in the summer months until October.

north portugal surfing

Central Portugal

And here are the statistics for Ericeira . Half an hour from Lisbon. From April to November it makes for an excellent environment for surfing.

mid portugal surfing ericeira

Southern Portugal

The Algarve is a great environment to surf in the fall and winter. This will be the perfect spot for you from October to April. And you also have the best weather in Europe. The statistics are from Carrapateira .

south portugal surfing carrapateira

When do you go where in Portugal?

Even in Portugal it can be winter and there is a possibility for snow. But you can also be really lucky. With or 16 to 18-degree weather in Lisbon. And around 20 degrees in the Algarve. You immediately feel the wonderful spring weather. A good wind and raincoat are recommended. Also, nice; January is one of the cheapest months to fly to Portugal.

Best location: Algarve

Wetsuit: 4/3

The water is now at its coldest. Around 15 degrees. The Algarve is your best choice for this month in terms of weather. It may still be spring-like, but there can also be storms and pure autumn. But with the south coast close by there is always a good wave to be found.

Check the Algarve Surf Guide

The days are considerably longer. The sun is stronger. In other words, the days when it is good to stay, can be counted on multiple hands. And the wave machine is still running at full speed on the ocean. So, the best thing to do is to find the region where you can really find good shelter.

Best location: Lisbon , Alentejo and the Algarve

Wetsuit: 3/2 (and 4/3 if you are cold fast)

The Algarve is certainly still possible. But central Portugal is a fairly safe choice to find good weather and good surfing. So in the Lisbon area. Especially Ericeira and the spots on the south coast near Lisbon can now be surfed nicely. And tickets are cheap during this period.

Best location: Lisbon

Wetsuit: 3/2

Summer is here. For Dutch standards. Steady warm weather. Still plenty of waves in the neighborhood. The whole region between Porto and Lisbon are decent now (statistically). With, among other things, the fun spots such as Peniche and Ericeira.

Best location: Peniche and Ericeira .

The summer is now steady. No more rain. You will find waves mainly along the west coast. Just as in May, you can turn to spots such as Peniche and Ericeira in June.

Best location: Peniche and Ericeira.

The Algarve is hot. And it gets busier everywhere. Find the lesser known spots. In the Alentejo (between the Algarve and Lisbon) you will find good surfing spots. And there are good surfing spots between Ericeira and Porto. Ericeria is now full. Like Peniche.

Best location: Between the well-known spots, for example Alentejo.

The busiest, hottest month of the year. But still applies; if you either get to the water very early or if you along the coast you will find beautiful places. We advise you to travel more to the North and avoid the known regions.

Best location: North of Porto (like Espinho)

Still fantastic weather and the crowds are decreasing enormously. The more well-known spots thus become more attractive again. Actually, along with October this is one of the best months to go. Good weather, less crowded and cheaper accommodations. And autumn wells are approaching.

Best location: Lisbon and Porto region.

October is one of the best months to surf in Portugal. The whole country still has average summer weather. Think about 20 degrees Celsius, but even up to 30 degrees in the Algarve. And the ocean is already moving well with a great consistency of waves.

Best location: Everything south of Porto

November may be a better month in terms of waves. Not for beginners. The chance of huge waves is now the greatest. The weather is still great, often around 20 degrees, but the temperature can now drop below that 20 degrees. And the first rain showers arrive.

Best location: Everything south of Peniche

Wetsuit: 3/2 and 4/3

When it comes to the weather you better leave Northern Portugal as it is. Although Porto remains a nice city. It would be better if you go south of Lisbon. The Algarve would actually be your best bet. Still nice weather. Occasional showers. And good shelter for the wind. So, there is a nice wave out there somewhere. For every level.

Surf Spots in Maui- The Complete Guide to Surfing in Maui, Hawaii

About Surfing in Maui, Hawaii

The Island of Maui is one of the best surf destinations in the Hawaiian Archipelago . Unlike the big, challenging waves of Oahu or Kauai , Maui is considered the perfect place for beginners. In fact, most of the surf beaches in Maui offer mellow waves and ideal conditions for surf lessons. However, don’t mistake, the North Shore of the island is home to several world-class breaks. The most famous one is “Jaws”, one of the most aggressive waves on the planet.

When surfing in Maui, you will never be alone in the water. Since it is such a popular destination for surf holidays, all surf spots in Maui are crowded. That can be an advantage because you get to meet great people from different places. However, you must remember to show respect for the locals and follow the surf etiquette.

As for the waves, Maui offers a wide selection for all skill levels. While the North Shore receives big and consistent swells, the South Shore is smaller and beginner-friendly. Due to the location of the Big Island from the south and other islands from the southwest, most of the southern swell is blocked and never makes it to Maui. Therefore, the waves in Maui are usually less powerful than on the other Hawaiian Islands.

Some of the biggest names in the world of surfing come from Maui. From Ian Walsh to Kai Lenny and many others, Maui produced some of the best surfers in the world. Therefore, when surfing in Maui, especially on the North Shore, you will likely share waves with very good surfers. Remember, this is Hawaii, the mother of surfing, and having fun in the water is all that matters.

Surfing in Maui, Hawaii

Surf Seasons in Maui

Like in all the Hawaiian Islands, you can surf Maui all year long. Just remember, the North Shore works best during winter, from November to April, and the South Shore is best in summer, from May to October.

During winter, the north swells are big and consistent. Therefore, this is the best time for advanced surfers to surf in Maui. Beaches like Jaws and Hookipa produce giant waves during this time of year and attract surfers from all over the world. The water temperature is about 75°F (24°C), and a short vest is usually enough (or a spring suit for the sensitive ones).

The summertime is when the south swell hits the surf beaches of Maui. However, as mentioned, some of it gets blocked on the way, and the waves that actually hit the shore are small and mushy. Therefore, this time of year is excellent for beginners and for longboarders. The water temperature in summer is about 81°F (27°C), and there is no need for more than a pair of shorts.

Finally, keep in mind that Maui is a windy island. That means that every day around 10 AM, the wind kicks in and destroys the quality of the waves. Therefore, when surfing in Maui, waking up early for a morning session is highly recommended.

Maui Surf Spots Map

Surf Spots in Maui

When surfing in Maui, you can choose between many different surf breaks. From the challenging barrels of the North Shore to the user-friendly waves of the South Shore, it all depends on what you are looking for. So, in detail, these are the most famous surf spots in Maui:

Surf Spots in Maui’s North Shore

You cannot talk about Maui’s surf scene without mentioning Jaws. This is the wave that put Maui on the world’s surfing map and the main attraction for big-wave riders. Jaws is located in Pe’ahi Beach on the North Shore and lights up when a big northern swell hits Hawaii. The wave is massive, powerful, and dangerous. Needless to say, only pro surfers paddle out to Jaws and usually get towed by a jet sky.

This is one of the best surf spots in Maui and Hawaii in general. In Hookipa, you will find several peaks, all breaking over a shallow reef. The waves are hollow, and the currents are strong, so this break is suitable for experienced surfers. Due to its high quality, this beach is always crowded.

Just next to the harbor of Kahalulu City, there is an excellent wedge-type wave. It requires a big swell to work, and it is not always at its best, but once it does, the break is extremely powerful. This is probably the favorite surf spot in Maui among bodyboarders.

Honokohau Bay:

Just next to the famous Honolua Bay, this spot is much less crowded. The waves here are not as good, but on the right swell, you can score very long right-handers. Due to the rocks and the strong riptides, this break is suitable for intermediates and up.

Honolua Bay:

You probably heard about this beach, as it is very famous and popular. Actually, it is considered one of the best surfing beaches in Hawaii. Honolua Bay requires a big northern swell to spread its magic, and once such swell arrives, the rides are long and hollow. The quality of this right-hander is the best you can get, but it is also very aggressive and suitable for experienced surfers only.

Surf Spots in Maui’s South Shore

Lahaina reefs:.

This spot is situated on the West Coast of Maui. It offers several reef breaks that are suitable for all skill levels. Moreover, if you go to the south end of the beach, you can ride the left wave just off the harbor wall or the right-hander inside of it. That’s a fantastic spot for beginners and intermediates, especially during summer.

Olowalu Beach:

A bit south of Lahaina Harbor, this beach offers lovely left-hand rides during summer. The surf here is suitable for all skill levels, but be aware of the sharks in this area, as they are out there pretty often.

Fast and hollow waves break here just in front of the harbor wall all summer. This beach is a south swell magnet, and it is one of the best surf spots in Maui.

Left hand wave

Can Beginners Surf in Maui?

The Island of Maui offers spectacular waves for surfers of all skill levels, including novice ones. For instance, the break at Kalama Beach is gentle and ideal for those who want to learn and practice. In contrast, beaches like Honolua Bay and Ma’alaea are more aggressive and require higher surfing skills. In short, there is a wide selection of surf spots in Maui that suit all surfers.

Surf Camps in Maui

If you are a beginner taking your first steps in the surfing world or even an intermediate seeking improvement, you can explore the surf beaches of Maui at a surf camp. These are the most recommended ones on the island:

1. Maui Wave Riders.

2. Women’s Soul Retrieval Surf Camp.

3. Maui Surfer Girls.

Surfing Guide to Mozambique

Surf mozambique

Mozambique is one of the most underrated and rewarding surfing destination in the world. Located just above South Africa, on the Indian Ocean side of the African continent, Mozambique has some incredible, uncrowded waves.

Most decent surfing opportunities are located on the southern part of Mozambique with flagship surf spots such as Tofinho and Ponta do Oura, a world-class point break.

Ponta do Ouro is located on the very southern tip of Mozambique and it is one of Africa’s longest waves! However, Ponta can be pretty fickle and needs proper swell and wind direction to work properly. When it does, South Africans rush up north to surf this amazing point.

While some waves in Mozambique are starting to be known world-wide, this country still has many unexplored territories and the most adventurous surfers can definitely find waves that have barely been ridden before…

When to surf Mozambique

The best time to surf Mozambique is during the austral winter season which lasts from June to September. That is when Mozambique receives the most consistent swells and favorable winds. However, there are waves and great opportunities to surf Mozambique throughout the rest of the year as well.

Cesar Alvarez

Cesar Alvarez

Roaming the globe with a surfboard and a laptop, crafting digital stories that ride the wave of surfing culture.

Independentemente do teu nível, o objetivo aqui é descobrir novos destinos, novas pessoas e novos locais onde poder surfar as ondas mais impressionantes.

1ª rodada Molly Picklum (4ª) x Tatiana Weston-Webb (5º) Ethan Ewing (4º) x Italo Ferreira (5º)

Italo Ferreira mantém o sonho vivo do bicampeonato.
