Tanzania's premiere big game safari experience...

Welcome to kilombero north safaris.

Since 1994, Kilombero North Safaris have been offering the discerning hunter the finest classic East African hunting experience in Tanzania.

Due to its vast size and varied landscape, much of Tanzania's great game fields still remain unfrequented. Undisturbed, you can stand knee deep listening to the gentle hypnotic rhythm of the riverine swamp whilst in the pursuit of Buffalo, and hear the raspy grunt of a leopard coming from up the valley of a dense mountain forest. Tanzania is one of the last places where the wildlife remains untouched and the environment is raw.

We are the concession holders of all our hunting blocks, and we are committed to managing and conserving these magnificent wild areas in a responsible and sustainable way to preserve their original state for future generations.

Big Game Hunting in Tanzania

Huge wilderness areas, abundant with a vast variety of game

Tanzania is traditionally renowned for its exceptional hunting and excellent trophy quality. This country is home to the largest concentration of heavy maned Lion left in Africa, a very healthy Leopard population, vast herds of Buffalo as well as incomparably large varieties of plains game, including Roan antelope, Sable antelope, Eland, Greater Kudu and Sitatunga. Gerenuk, Lesser Kudu and Oryx occur throughout the semi-arid North East and Masai Bushbuck, Red Duiker, Mountain Reedbuck and Suni can be found in suitable high altitude habitat.

Three quarters of Tanzania's land mass is wilderness, most of which is National Park, Game Reserve or Hunting Area. The Wilderness (and the Wildlife it contains) is not fenced. The animals know no boundaries - they move freely in and out of various hunting areas.

Tanzania is a beautiful and varied country with the finest wildlife habitat remaining in Africa today with large wilderness areas of abundant game. The country and terrain vary enormously, from semi-desert in the North East, to open plains and thorn bush in the North; swamps in the North West; to Miombo woodland throughout the country. This unusual diversity creates ideal habitat for a wide variety of wildlife species.

Clients shall only be permitted to hunt those animals for which their permit is issued (subject to quota availability). By Tanzania Law only hunting clients are permitted to hunt.

The Classic African Safari Experience

The safari tradition originated in East Africa. Tanzania is a land of distinctions that still evokes this spirit of adventure that first attracted famous hunters, such as Roosevelt and Hemingway to Africa. It offers some of the largest hunting areas in Africa where the game is free to roam in true wilderness.

Our safari camps are incredibly comfortable and luxurious, while still retaining the charm and atmosphere of sleeping under canvas. Telling stories and sipping whiskey around the campfire at the end of a long adventurous day’s hunt, is still a huge part of a traditional Tanzanian hunting adventure with Robin Hurt Safaris.

You will not share your camp with any other guests. There are refrigerators, both in your camps and in your vehicles. All tents are roomy, insect-proof and secure. Your sleeping tent has an attached bathroom with flushing loos, running water and a verandah. Beds are large (7' long) with comfortable mattresses.

Your vehicles are all four-wheel drive Toyota Land Cruisers equipped with winches, gun racks, tools, spares, radios, fridges and first aid bags. There is a radio network between vehicles, between camps and from camps to the RHS base in Arusha.

ACCOMMODATION

Tanzania is one of the last outposts of hunting in Africa. You will hunt on a free range area of approximately 2 000 000 acres with pristine natural fauna and flora. The area is exceptionally good for Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Sable, Roan, Kudu, Warthog, Bushpig, Zebra, Lichtenstein Hartebeest and quite a few more. A short charter flight of 1;45 minutes is most convenient to get from Arusha to the hunting area. A drive into camp can also be done but can take a lot of your valuable time. The three camps are located on the banks of permanent springs, providing an unforgettable African wilderness experience. We provide 24/7 Electricity, provided by solar as well as gas Generators.

Additional information.

1. Medical Information Tanzania is a malarial area and precautions must be taken. Kilombero North – Wembere / Spear Safaris recommend that you check with your doctor or local health authority for details of health regulations and immunization requirements. There are comprehensive medical boxes in camps, however, please ensure that you take with you any special medication you require. All our professional hunters are equipped with a satellite phone in case of an emergency.

Flying Doctor Medical Service. This is an air medical service, which will come to your assistance in the case of a genuine emergency. Each flight carries a fully qualified nurse and life saving medical equipment. Flying Doctor has a radio link with its headquarters in Nairobi.

2. Air Charters In order to maximise your hunting time and avoid fatigue air charter flights are provided, to camps, for most camp changes and out of camps. The majority of camps have their own airstrips. Because of the expense involved, air charter flights are shared, where possible. The number of passengers on each air charter is entirely up to the air carrier. Please note that most incoming safaris will use the same aircraft as the outgoing safaris, on the same “travel day” and that Kilombero North / Wembere / Spear Safaris reserves the right to transport fresh food supplies, and or Staff related to your Safari from time to time.

Commercial Airline Flights Arusha’s international airport is Kilimanjaro. KLM have a daily flight with excellent connections through Amsterdam. There are however many other carriers that can be used, please consult with your travel agent. Safaris in the Kilombero valley start from Dar es salaam, Masai Safaris start in Arusha.

3. Visa Requirements Citizens of certain countries are required to obtain visas for entry into Tanzania. As the list of countries changes from time to time, it is important to check with your local authorities or travel consultant regarding current visa regulations.

4. Communications Each hunting camp is supplied with Satellite WIFI, which comes at a nominal cost. During every safari, communication can be established with base, as well as with other camps.

Time GMT plus three (3) hours.

Electricity 230v AC. Power is generated by means of generator and or Solar.

5. The Climate Owing to Tanzania’s close proximity to the Equator, the annual variation on temperature is small. The inland climate, due to altitude, is cool in the morning and evening, but warm at mid-day. The average temperature during the day is about 80 degrees F (27 degrees C) and at night this can drop to 60 degrees F (15 degrees C). The coast has a warm tropical climate during the day and temperature drops at night.

Recommended Clothing Bush clothes should be loose, comfortable and sturdy. Dark green heavy cotton is best, kaki is not the best option. Laundry is done daily; flat irons with live coals are used for ironing. East Africa, due to its altitude, can sometimes be cold. A warm duffel jacket or heavy jersey is necessary in some areas for the cool of the evening, night and morning. An anti tsetse fly jacket is recommended such as the Bug Tamer, available in the United States.

Regulations Clients shall only be permitted to hunt those animals for which their permit is issued (subject to quota availability). By Tanzania Law only hunting clients are permitted to hunt. Any observers who wish to hunt will result in upgrading the observer to hunting client status, which will mean adjustment of all fees, including basic safari fees and all Government fees.

The hunting season runs from 1st July through to 31st December. The driest months are July through October, when you can hunt throughout Tanzania. With the onset of the rainy season in November in the West of Tanzania, where Kilombero North / Wembere /Spear Safaris tend to concentrate, movement becomes restricted and we do not hunt anymore. The Northern part of Tanzania remains open for Hunting.

Hunting Areas & Game Concession

Plains Game Adventures has the exclusive right to the finest game concession in Northern Tanzania:

The area is easily reached from arusha city about 1:30 hours and 90km by road via almost all-weather roads to Nakotela camp. Between Latitudes: 36.90 and 36.83.The terrain ranges from flat plains to scattered ridges or rows of hills. The elevation ranges from 560m to 2123m above sea level. The majority of the flood plains contain black/cotton soils, but the hills have weak soils that are prone to erosion. If you’re looking for a unique gift, this is the place to be. The majority of the vegetation has adapted well to arid circumstances and recurrent droughts. Bush fires are common in the area, and are typically initiated by livestock herders to fend off pests such as ticks and tsetse fly, as well as to promote green foliage growth for their cattle.

About hunting in tanzania.

Tanzania is considered by many experienced Africa hands to be the crown jewel of Africa’s hunting countries. Not only does it boast a vast game list, but also Tanzania prides itself on its safari traditions, which include well-appointed tented camps and large staffs catering to the visiting hunter. A large country in East Africa covering 365,000 square miles, Tanzania still contains large regions of near-wilderness, such as the Selous Game Reserve and the Rungwa Game Reserve. It has a wide variety of ecosystems, from the Masai Steppe in the northeast, home to gazelles and oryx, to miombo forest in the south and west, home to sable and roan. Lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo are well distributed throughout the country. The plains-game species are almost too numerous to list, and include some species that are hunted nowhere else in Africa. Among the most sought-after are eland, Grant gazelle, Thomson gazelle, Coke and Lichtenstein hartebeest, greater and lesser kudu, oribi, oryx, puku, several types of reedbucks, sable, roan, sitatunga, topi, suni, waterbuck, zebra, and white-bearded and Nyasa wildebeest. Tanzania has three classes of hunting licenses. A hunter must choose a ten-day, sixteen-day, or twenty-one-day license, and a larger variety of species are available on the longer licenses. For example, a hunter may hunt up to two buffalo and a variety of plains game on a ten-day license, but must buy a sixteen-day license to hunt crocodiles and waterbuck and a twenty-one-day license to hunt elephant, sable, roan, lion, leopard, oryx, greater kudu, and eland. In addition to the license fee, trophy fees are charged for each species taken, as well as other government fees, which can add significantly to the safari cost. A full-bag safari in Tanzania is not inexpensive by any means, but it is one of the hunting world’s most desired experiences.

Let Africa Inspire You and BookYourHunt Make it Reality!

Africa's plentiful and diverse wildlife offers a new adventure whether you're a first time African hunter or a seasoned veteran of many safaris. BookYourHunt has your first safari, or your next safari.

What you need to know

  • 1. Planning your trip
  • 2. Upon arrival
  • 4. After the hunt

Planning your trip

A tourist visa for traveling to Tanzania is required and must be obtained in advance of your trip. You’ll need to apply to the Tanzanian consulate in your home country, and will need to supply your passport, flight itinerary, two recent passport-size photos, an application form (filled out and signed), and the required fee, which is $100 for U.S. citizens. Allow several weeks for the process to be completed.

Tanzania is a malaria zone country, and antimalarial drugs are strongly recommended.

You will need to send your firearm details to your outfitter well in advance so the proper paperwork and permits will be ready for you up on arrival. Tanzania recently introduced a new requirement to import firearms for safaris: Hunters must now provide photographs of the firearm and of the serial number for any guns brought into the country. Only three rifles per hunter and 100 rounds per rifle may be imported. Automatic weapons and handguns are strictly forbidden. When hunting dangerous game (lion, elephant, and buffalo), the minimum caliber is .375.

If you intend to borrow a rifle from your safari operator, be aware that if your safari is jointly operated by two companies, only the operator conducting the hunt in a given area may provide firearms. If you plan to hunt with your operators' rifles in Tanzania, make sure ahead of time that rifles are available in accordance with Tanzania's regulations.

Upon arrival

Most hunters fly into either Arusha or Dar Es Salaam. A representative of your outfitter should meet you upon arrival to assist in clearing your firearms. Check with your outfitter to determine if you will need to exchange money at the airport, and be aware that many places in Tanzania do not take credit cards.

Hunts in Tanzania almost always require a charter flight from the city of arrival to the hunting area. Depending on when you arrive, your outfitter may arrange for you to stay overnight in a hotel and take the charter flight the following day, or be driven to the domestic airport immediately to catch your charter flight to camp. On arrival in the hunting area, you will be met by your professional hunter at the airstrip and then driven to camp.

The hunting season in Tanzania begins on July 1 and ends on December 31. Tanzania has strict fair-chase hunting regulations that include the following: No animal may be shot from a vehicle or chased or driven by a vehicle. All hunting must be conducted within the hours of daylight. Female, young or immature animals are not to be hunted.

Most hunts in Tanzania are spot-and-stalk or safari style, with the hunters covering ground either on foot or by vehicle and, once an animal is spotted, completing a stalk on foot. Terrain varies dramatically from relatively flat savanna to rugged mountains, depending on the region of the country you’re hunting. Hunts for certain species require extensive walking; others require very little, so it’s a good idea to ask the professional hunter what to expect.

Dark green or brown clothing is best, as are comfortable, well-broken-in boots with soft soles for quiet stalking. You’ll only need a couple of changes of clothing as laundry is done daily at most camps. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunblock, good optics, and a jacket for cool mornings and evenings.

After the hunt

Tipping is appreciated in Tanzania, and camps in this country tend to have very large staffs with a high level of service, so check with your outfitter in advance regarding how much to bring for tips.

Trophy preparation

Typically, animals are skinned at the safari headquarters and all skins are cleaned and salted; skulls and horns are cleaned and buried in salt. After a couple of days, the skins are hung to dry, cleaned once more, and folded and stored in a skinning shed. Skulls will be cleaned and placed on a rack. Before leaving camp, it’s a good idea to ensure the skulls and skins are properly tagged with the hunter’s name and contact information.

At the end of the season, trophies will be taken to a taxidermist for professional cleaning and dipping, which is required for export. The taxidermist then contacts the hunter for instructions regarding preparation and shipment, and to arrange payment for these services. The taxidermist then contacts a shipping agent, who will handle the permits and shipping to the hunter’s home country, again after contacting the hunter.

Export permits

CITES permits are required for exporting certain species, including lion and elephant, and it is the hunter’s responsibility to arrange for these in advance. In addition, enhancement permits are now required for import of certain animals into the USA. It is important that you are in possession of the relevant permits issued by the county into which you will be importing your trophies, and to be aware that many export and import requirements for these species have undergone dramatic changes in recent years.

See Africa through the eyes of “great hunting legends of yester-year” and experience a connection between man and nature never felt before.

Exceptional hunting and excellent trophy quality makes Tanzania one of the premier hunting destinations in Africa. Tanzania is home to all of the dangerous game species found in Africa, an exiting diversity of plains game and ultimately traditional, old-school free roam hunting.

Hunting this vast and unforgivable land where wildlife is roaming free and putting yourself in the face of danger every single day is the purist form of Africa you'll ever experience.

A bucket list hunt to be ticked-off by the seasoned hunter.

Rungwa River

Big Game Africa is offering you the Rungwa River region, a landscape of unspoiled beauty comprising of vast open flood plains, rolling hills and huge rocky outcrops nestled perfectly between the endless "miombo" woodlands and many "korongo's" feeding the Rungwa river during the rain season. This area prints the map close to a 1 000 000 acres of unclosed free-range hunting that will ensure you the true African experience.

The Rungwa River region, well known for the many special trophies it has delivered over decades gone by, is home to good populations of Lion, large herds of good old Cape Buffalo, and the always present Leopard lurking from the tree tops, scanning the vicinity for their next meal, with the Rungwa river populated with Hippo and Crocodile. An abundance of plains game grazing this vast open land such as Sable, Roan, Eland, Kudu and Topi among many other species is on offer to be harvested by the connoisseur trophy hunter.

Whether interested in dangerous or plains game hunting, Big Game Africa will guide you  on an unforgettable hunting adventure, pursuing the legacy of exceptional trophies hunted in Tanzania, East Africa.

Living up to the traditions of Big Game Hunting in Tanzania, you will be hosted in a comfortable, fully equipped tented camp with all basic needs and amenities. Tents are furnished with comfortable beds under large mosquito nets and an on-suite bathroom for privacy.

Our camp chef will take care of traditional African cuisine, prepared to perfection in the bush kitchen and served under a star lit African sky. The well trained camp staff will see to the house keeping around the camp and your laundry will be done on a daily basis.

Cape Buffalo (3) and Plains Game are also on quota for this safari!

THE FULL BAG SAFARI HUNTING AREA

This is your chance to hunt dangerous game in Tanzania in one of the great lion, leopard and buffalo hunting areas in all of Africa!  The full bag safari will take place in central Tanzania on a 1,500 sq. mile concession that borders Ruaha National Park and is part of the Rungwa ecosystem.  All areas that will be hunted are free-range.  This area is wild and your 21 day safari will be similar to Roosevelt’s and Hemmingway’s adventures in Africa.  The area is comprised of typical bush terrain, is generally flat and has one large river running through it.  The camp is located on the banks of this river.

THE FULL BAG SAFARI

This outfitter has had a success rate of 70% over the last five years on mature lions and a nearly perfect record on big leopards.  His clients take fully mature lions that comply with Tanzania’s regulations that only male lions that are 6 years of age or older may be taken.  This is a good area to hunt lions, as there are a lot of lions in this area.  There are also a lot of big leopards in the area and you will experience multiple cats on bait during this safari.  This is the perfect safari to bring a cameraman along on, as both cats will be shot during the daytime hours.  You will cover a lot of ground via the comfortable land cruisers to collect, hang and check baits consistently until the focus is narrowed to one actively feeding trophy male cat.  The outfitter is an expert on the use of trail cameras on bait and these methods will be used to monitor the bait stations for big cats..  The outfitter has a proven track record of helping his clients kill trophy lions and leopards.

There are limited opportunities to take elephant in this area, but if an old legal elephant is encountered, the elephant may be harvested at the PH’s discretion.

Cape Buffalo (3), sable, roan and other plains game may be taken on this hunt.  These animals will be utilized as bait for your leopard hunt.  A list of trophy fees is available below:

THE FULL BAG SAFARI CAMP

Although this is a wilderness hunt, you will stay in a 3-star tented camp.  The lodging will consist of large East African style tents with in-suite bathrooms.  The tents will feature frame beds and mattresses with clean linens and blankets.  The tents also feature windows, rugs and complete floors.  Laundry will be done daily and service staff is on call at all times.  Electrical power is provided by a generator.  Internet and cell phone service are not available in camp.  A satellite phone is available in camp in case of emergencies.

Food will consist of 3 course dinners, picnic lunches and made-to-order breakfasts.  Bottled water, beer, wine and ice are all available and included.

THE FULL BAG SAFARI OUTFITTER

This Tanzania outfitter has been hunting professionally in Africa since 2003.  He is very hands-on and personally conducts more than half the hunts.  His other PH has been professionally hunting for over 20 years and both are highly experienced lion hunters.  You cannot be in better hands that when dangerous game hunting in a remote area with this outfitter.  Their equipment is well-maintained and the staff is well-trained.

GETTING THERE

You will take KLM airlines into Kilimanjaro International Airport.  Your PH will meet you at the airport in Kilimanjaro, where you will be driven an hour and 15 minutes to Arusha.   Once in Arusha, you will overnight in a hotel ($165-$350) and wake up the next morning and drive to the hunting concession.  An overnight stay in Arusha may also be necessary on the day of departure from camp. Charter flights are also available from Arusha to the camp and back.  Prices for an unshared plane run around $4,500.  Possible sharing coordination of hunts can lower this cost.

So what are you waiting for?  Isn’t it about time that you put some majestic trophies in your game room?

Table of Contents

Tanzania, steeped in natural beauty, offers some of the most exciting and rewarding hunting experiences on the planet. We explore the various Tanzania hunting safari packages , providing you with all the information you need to prepare for your unforgettable adventure.

Understanding Tanzania Hunting

An overview.

Tanzania boasts of a myriad of game reserves, national parks , and hunting areas brimming with a diverse range of wildlife. From the semi-arid Northeast regions to the open plains and thorn bush in the North, the country’s varied topography creates an ideal habitat for a wide array of animal species.

The Hunting Season

The hunting season in Tanzania begins on the 1st of July and concludes on the 31st of December and all Tanzania hunting safari packages are tailored towards these times of the year. It’s worthy to note also that the country strictly adheres to fair-chase hunting regulations, ensuring ethical hunting practices that respect the local wildlife.

Preparing for Your Safari

Visa requirements.

Before embarking on your safari, you’ll need to secure a tourist visa , which involves submitting an application to the Tanzanian consulate in your home country.

Health Measures

Since Tanzania is a malaria zone, it is strongly recommended that you take antimalarial drugs.

Firearm Regulations

If you intend to bring your firearm, you will need to inform your outfitter well in advance. Tanzania has specific firearm import requirements and forbids certain types of weapons. Most Tanzania hunting safari packages however include the provision of firearms.

Upon Arrival in Tanzania

Most hunters arrive in Arusha or Dar Es Salaam , where a representative of your outfitter should meet you to assist with any necessary procedures.

Most hunts in Tanzania are spot-and-stalk or safari style. The terrain varies from flat savannahs to rugged mountains, and the hunting method will depend on the region and the species being hunted.

Post-Hunt Procedures

Tipping is appreciated in Tanzania. Ensure you check with your outfitter in advance to understand the appropriate amount for tips. Tips of course are not factored into Tanzania hunting safari packages.

Trophy Preparation

After the hunt, animals are skinned and all skins are cleaned, salted, and stored. Skulls are also cleaned and placed on a rack.

Taxidermy and Export Permits

At the end of the season, trophies are professionally cleaned and dipped, which is required for export. The taxidermist will arrange for the cleaning, preparation, and shipment of your trophies.

Types of Hunting Safaris

Dangerous game hunting.

Tanzania hunting safari packages offer some of the most thrilling dangerous game hunting safaris in Africa. From buffalo to lion , leopard, and elephant, hunters can take on several of Africa’s most formidable creatures.

Custom Safari

For those seeking an unrestricted hunting experience, a custom safari is the way to go.

Costs of Hunting Safaris

Depending on the length and nature of your safari, costs can vary. A custom safari, for instance, will have different pricing to a dangerous game hunting safari. However, keep in mind that both are Tanzania hunting safari packages that are available to hunters.

The Classic African Safari Experience

Tanzania embodies the spirit of the classic African safari. From the luxurious tented camps to the stories shared around the campfire at the end of a long day’s hunt, the country offers an unforgettable hunting adventure.

The Robin Hurt Safaris
