How to Best Do a Budget Safari in Tanzania [Detailed Guide]

Have you always dreamed of going on an African safari? It’s a trip of a lifetime adventure and something we think everyone should experience at least once! But, if you’re worried about the cost of a safari, then we’ve got some great news…

It’s possible to do an amazing safari within a reasonable budget! Tanzania offers quality affordable safaris even in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro National Parks. However, planning your own Tanzanian trip might seem like an impossible task on a modest budget.

But we’ve got a great guide for you below on how to plan an affordable but memorable trip of a lifetime exploring the African plains! 

Factors Influencing the Cost of a Safari

1) duration of the safari.

How long you want to spend on your Tanzania safari will greatly define the budget you can put toward the trip. It’s possible to have a great Safari experience in 3-4days at the very minimum. But this would limit your viewing to just two parks and means you’ll spend a lot of time on the road instead of enjoying the lodges you’re staying at. 

For Serengeti Park, you’ll need at least 1-2 days and 1 extra day at Ngorongoro, so this is the absolute minimum amount of time to spend in the area. If you’re spending this amount of time, then we’d suggest focusing only on game viewing instead of extra activities you can do in the area. 

If you want to visit all four parks, including Lake Manyara and Tarangire (which we’ll explain in more detail below), then we’d suggest factoring in at least 1-2 more days for these places. Remember that you’ll have to pay entrance fees too, which we’ve defined below. 

A well-planned safari holiday can be around 4-7 days within a friendly budget. In this time, you’ll still get a great chance to soak in the stunning scenery that surrounds you whilst not being at a rushed pace. 

2) Type: Group, Self-Drive or Private Safari Tours

You’ve got a lot of options to choose from when deciding on the style of trip you want to do on your Tanzania safari. What you decide on will largely impact the budget of your trip. There are three types of trips you can decide on. We’ve explained them in a bit more detail for you below.

Group Safaris

Group safaris are arguably the most budget-friendly options. That being said, they don’t offer much flexibility or exclusivity, so a lot of research has to be done to find the best group safari suited to your interests. We’ve gone into a bit more detail with our recommended ones below. 

You can expect to pay around $200 per day for entry-level safaris traveling by overland truck, and groups normally include up to 30 travelers. This price includes all accommodation, most meals, transport, and activities. But you won’t have much flexibility with the itinerary.

Try not to be fooled by Tanzania budget safari trips coming in at around $130 per day. Most of these don’t even include a visit to Serengeti National Park, which can be a major drawback as you shouldn’t miss the wild animals you see there!

Self-Drive Safaris

Self-drive can be one of the cheapest ways to explore the National Parks in Tanzania. But if you don’t research and plan this carefully in advance, the price can begin to get rather expensive! On the other hand, if you want to explore by self-driving, which gives you greater flexibility and the ability to customize the standard of accommodation and activities you want to include, you should book this in advance.

There are many self-drive companies you can do this with that also assist in booking accommodation, vehicle hire, and even some park fees in advance. If you’re traveling during a busier season, it’s important to do this to avoid availability issues. 

If you want to hire a car, you can expect to pay around $70 a day (including insurance) or $110 if you want to include a driver. If you’re going to camp in the vehicle, too, then expect to add $25 to this for the rooftop tent (you don’t want to be camping on the ground here!) .

Private Safaris

A private safari is the most flexible option. It’s not totally out of your price range if you’re sticking to a budget! If you travel in a group of 4 or more, the cost can be split between you. It’s definitely something we’d recommend as it makes the experience all the more memorable! If you’re in a group with specific interests, then perhaps this might be a good option for you as you’ll be paired with a guide with expertise in these interests. It’s also the best way to get a guide that speaks your language.

3) Standard of accommodation

Camping safari.

A camping safari is the most inexpensive way to enjoy exploring the national parks of Tanzania. For nature-lovers, it’s the perfect way to explore. Typically, you’ll stay in dome tents in public or private campsites that have 24-hour security. You’ll be in groups of 7-10 people. They’re always fenced; you’re unlikely to encounter any wildlife as you stay at these places! 

If you’re tight on a budget but have a spirit of adventure, then this might be the best option for you. Prices normally range from $250-300 per day , including all transfers and meals prepared by a safari cook who travels with you. 

Lodge Safari

If you’re not so eager to stay in a tent, then a budget lodge might be the best option for you. Tanzania has a wide variety of lodge accommodation ranging from 3-5 stars and catering for all budgets. Lodges can be either small hotels, guest houses, or luxury tented camps. It’s a great way to have an affordable but classical African safari experience. You can expect to pay around $300 per person per day on an all-inclusive trip with lodge accommodation included and traveling in groups of 7-12 people.

Mobile Tented Camps

Mobile Tented camps are also another upgraded version of the camping safaris. These are bigger tents offered on a more private touring basis.

What makes these camps unique is that they can easily relocate, depending on the movement of the migrating animals.

You get more flexibility with where you want to stay and explore, plus the quality of equipment is generally much better at these places. These prices can range from $400-500 per person per night, but also remember that this cost includes all travel expenses and food as you’re traveling. Plus, it’s the ultimate way to relax. You won’t be required to assist with cooking and camp set-up on this adventure. 

Luxury Safari

A luxury safari is the most expensive way to explore the National parks of Tanzania. However, they can be great value-for-money if you’re traveling in larger groups! Private mobile camping offers the highest level of comfort with all the amenities included.

There are many 4-5* lodging accommodations in Tanzania, and if you really want to explore these, we’d suggest traveling in the lower season to get the best rates. It’s possible to book these sorts of accommodations on a full-board basis, too, so everything is included, but the prices can be a lot higher, with some ranging from $600+ per night.

Ngorongoro Crater 

If you’re driving to Serengeti, then you’ll no doubt be passing through the Ngorongoro crater on your way. We love Ngorongoro’s high concentration of fauna and flora in such a small conservation area. We couldn’t believe how much we saw in a single day!

It’s certainly worth the day trip as you’re passing through, but you won’t need much more than this, especially if you’re on a tight budget. If you stay at a campsite close to the entry gates, then you can be up early the next day and be one of the first to explore. Seeing the Crater in the early morning hours is one of the best ways to explore the conservation area.

Passing through here does, unfortunately, come at a fee. The park has an entry fee of $80 per person and a vehicle descent fee of $295 . It’s an expensive road trip, which is why we’d suggest making the most of your time here instead of skipping straight ahead to Serengeti.

If you spend less time at Serengeti to add the extra day here, you won’t be disappointed with the stunning game views, and it will save on the budget too!

Serengeti National Park

Serengeti is arguably one of if not the best park for the best game viewing in Tanzania. But unfortunately, this comes with a higher price. It’s also the furthest park to travel to, so you’ll need to factor in extra travel time and fees for this. The entry to Serengeti National Park is $80 per person, and you’ll also need to pay a $150 fee for each safari vehicle.

If you’re traveling in a group of 4-6 people, then you’ll easily fit in one vehicle and can split the cost of this between you. If you’ve booked a package, however, then you won’t have to pay these prices as it’s normally included in the package.

Remember that you’ll need to pass through Ngorongoro Crater to reach Serengeti, which means you have to pay the fees here too. It’s an expensive 24 hours but worth it for the viewing. That’s why we’d suggest spending a bit of time at Ngorongoro to make the most of the fees you’re paying to enter instead of just driving straight through to Serengeti. 

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is located in Northern Tanzania, just south of Lake Manyara. It’s a protected area and is most renowned for the elephant herds that graze in the area. However, it’s also one of the best areas for viewing a variety of bird species. We truly believe you can’t beat seeing them dart from the scenic baobab trees. It’s one of the most beautiful sights to marvel at!

The best part is that experiencing this isn’t so expensive either! The entry fee for Tarangire is $55 per person, so you’re not breaking the bank to access the area. 

Lake Manyara National Park 

Whilst Lake Manyara is impressive because it is one of the least visited and untouched parks, you’ll need to factor in a whole extra day to explore this area. So if your time is limited due to budget, stick with the top two best destinations Serengeti and Ngorongoro, you won’t be disappointed with the viewing here.

Also, remember that despite Lake Manyara having a cheaper entry fee of $55 per person, the more parks you visit, the more entry fees you’ll need to pay. 

When Do You Want to Travel: Time of the Year

The time of year in which you decide to travel will have a significant impact on the cost of your trip. The high season falls around June – October. This is also referred to as the dry season, where prices of accommodation and trips can be up to 60% higher!

Another season to avoid if you’re looking to keep costs low is January and February. Whilst prices are a little cheaper (around 20% less than a high season), it’s still expensive as this is the calving season, making it a very popular time to experience a safari.

The Great Migration is one of the most sought-after sights to experience in Serengeti. It takes place around February time every year when prices can be at their highest. So expect to pay a hefty viewing fee if you want to experience this moment. 

If you’re looking to cut costs whilst traveling during a period that is still relatively dry, then November and December can be a good period for traveling. The game viewing conditions are still sublime and the experience more enjoyable with fewer crowds and vehicles on the road.

If you travel in November, you can expect to find prices up to 40% lower than what you’d expect in the high season. However, December is always a little tricky with it falling in the holidays, so you can expect prices to leap back up in the last few weeks of the year when many families are taking their holidays.

We personally love traveling in November, and if you pick Serengeti as your park, you might even catch the great migration live in action! 

March to May is the rainy season when prices are at their lowest. This is when you can expect heavy rainfalls and high humidity, which can be a little overwhelming at times! This doesn’t mean that it should be a time to avoid traveling.

In fact, Tanzania is a year-round safari destination, and you can still have a great time despite the occasional downpours. It’s also a photography-lovers delight, the savannah is at its greenest during this period, and the vast plains of Serengeti National park are filled with lush greenery.

This is also the most popular time for bird migration, so if that’s what you’re traveling to see, make sure you get the right binocular and this season will be the perfect time for you! 

Things to consider which are not included in your Safari package

• International Flights – Some tour companies can include the cost of flights in a safari package for you. That being said, if you book yourself, it’s easier to take advantage of frequent flyer points you may have or special booking deals.
• Visa Costs – To enter Tanzania, you must pay for a visa. These are normally paid in cash upon arrival or through an online e-portal before arrival. Remember that if you’re booking with a tour company, they cannot do this for you, and it’s your responsibility to pay for this upon arrival. It’s worth noting a visa costs $50 per person. • Vaccinations – You may be advised to have some vaccinations to protect you against diseases before traveling to Tanzania. We’d suggest booking a consultation with your travel doctor to understand what vaccinations may be required and the costs for doing so. You’ll also need to check border control rules regarding covid-19 requirements. It could be that you are required to have a negative PCR test 72 hours before arrival if you do not yet have the vaccine.
• Tipping – It’s customary to tip in Africa; however, this is at your discretion. We’d suggest tipping at least 10% of the bill in restaurants, hotels, and taxis if you were satisfied with the level of service. Typically gratuities are asked to be paid upon departure of lodges. Most of these will be shared out amongst the staff of the lodge. We’d suggest tipping guides separately, and it should be given to them directly. Normally a rate of $10 per day for a guide per guest is a reasonable gratuity. For lodge staff members, $5 per guest for all staff is a good start (depending on the level of accommodation). For transfer drivers, we’d suggest a tip of $3 per guest.
• Travel Insurance – It’s important to make sure you book a good travel insurance before departing on the trip that covers you for any medical emergencies or cancellations you might encounter. We always think it’s good to pay a little bit extra to have excellent insurance that covers all areas regarding accidents. It’s better to be safe than sorry in these cases despite accidents being a very unlikely scenario! Tanzania Safari Cost – Budgeting for an Epic Trip

In a nutshell, Tanzanian safari costs can be split into three tiers:

• Budget Safaris - about $200 per day in famous national parks like Ngorongoro Crater 
• Mid-Range Safaris - about $500 per person per day in famous national parks like Serengeti
• Luxury Safaris - $1,500 per person per day in famous national parks like Selous

Other important factors that will impact your safari cost are time of year, group size, accommodation, and extra activities during your travels.

But you don't need to grab a calculator just yet. I've done all three safari types through Tanzania before and I'm here to give you my best insights on how much your ideal Tanzanian safari will cost - from the tour itself, down to how much you should tip your favourite porter.

Here are a few ways you can save money on a Tanzanian safari:

• Travel in the low or shoulder season .

How long should I go on a Tanzanian safari for? 

I recommend that you go on a Tanzanian safari for a minimum of 4 days and a maximum of 7 days. If you have lots of spending money, you can even go on a safari for up to 14 days and explore other scenic landscapes like Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro .   

Remember, the longer you spend in Tanzania, the more expensive your trip will be. More transfer flights also quickly add to the price. For example, it will work out cheaper and make for a more leisurely holiday to stay 3-4 days in two camps rather than spend 1-2 nights in four camps.

What's the best and most affordable location for a Tanzanian safari? 

The best and most affordable location for a Tanzanian safari is the Northern Circuit by far. All these national parks are close together, which makes travelling there by car or airplane much easier in comparison with other national parks in the country.

Northern Safari Routes usually start in Arusha, Kilimanjaro International Airport   and include  Tarangire , Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti national parks.

Southern safari routes start at Dar es Salaam   and include the  Selous  and  Ruaha  national parks .  This safari circuit is generally more expensive as it’s more off-the-beaten-track and fewer flights go to   Julius Nyerere International Airport .

Group safaris are the cheapest option and a chance to meet new people as you will travel with a group. These tours have a set itinerary and departure dates and there is limited flexibility for your own preferences, so book in advance.

How much does a private safari cost? 

On average, private safaris cost $250-$1000 per person per day. 

The appeal of a private safari is that you have much more input on your trip. You decide your accommodation type and itinerary preferences.

Some luxury safari packages are all-inclusive of basic drinks such as cooldrink, house wines and spirits and may even include extra activities .

What is a Special Interest safari and what can I do on this type of safari? 

A special interest safari is a safari where you can do specialised activities beyond a typical safari itinerary. If you have a particular passion or are looking for a more specific trip, specialised safaris include expert guides that focus on your key interest. You can do a special interest safari by yourself or in a group. 

Specialised Group Safaris

How much do national park or game reserve entrance fees costs? Are they included in safari packages? 

Most national parks and game reserves in Tanzania cost $50 and more for adults. Entrance fees are often included in safari packages, but only ones that last for more than a day. If you're only planning on spending a few hours or a whole day at a national park, you only need to pay for the entrance fee. 

Park fees are used to fund the conservation management of national parks. Tanzania park fees are some of the most expensive in Africa, so be sure they are factored into your safari package price if you're travelling for more than one day.

Safari accommodation costs anywhere from $50-$2000 per person per day and ranges from sleeping in basic tents to sleeping in a 5-star hotel.

How much does hiring vehicles and drivers for safaris cost?

Hiring vehicles and drivers for safaris costs about $100-$200 per day. These driving safari costs depend on whether you travel alone or with a guide. 

Travelling in an off-road vehicle over dirt tracks is part of the authentic safari experience. Daily rates for hiring a standard 4×4 required to enter the parks are divided into the following rates:  

• self-drive - $120
• with a driver - $150 
• with driver and fuel - $180

How much do food and drinks cost on a safari?

If food and drinks are not included in your safari package, it will cost you between $10-$20 a day depending on the establishment. However, most food and drinks are included in safari packages and you'll only pay extra for alcohol or Western-styled meals ($50 and upwards).

The cheapest optional safari activities cost about $25 while optional luxurious activities cost more than $500.

How much money should I take on a safari?

You should take up to $1000 in spending cash after you've made all your bookings in advance. If you go on safari for a week, you'll likely be spending roughly $80-$100 per day. 

Although most establishments accept cards, It is good to take along some cash for buying souvenirs, tips and making smaller payments as a signal for card machines is notoriously unreliable. 

While most high-end establishments do accept USD, I recommend that you still exchange your money for Tanzanian Shillings before and during your stay. 

Should I give tips to porters and guides during my safari? 

Absolutely. It is customary in Tanzania to tip staff members who go above and beyond during your safari. However, it is at your discretion, and the figures below offer a helpful guideline on tipping porters :

• Porters - $10 (once-off)
• Hotel / Lodge Staff - $10 (once-off)
• Drivers and camp cooks - $15 per group per day 
• Safari guides - $20 per day

How much do Tanzanian visas cost for a safari? 

Tanzanian visas typically cost between $50-$100 and you can apply for them online or on arrival at a local airport.

Please note: Tanzanian visas are also valid for Zanzibar but you will need a separate visa for Kenya.

How much does travel insurance cost for safaris?  

Safari travel insurance is included with most safari packages and costs around $80 for two weeks. Good travel insurance is essential. Your policy should not only cover medical issues like injury and illness but also insure against flight cancellations and theft.

8 ways to experience Tanzania on a budget

Tanzania’s world-class wildlife watching doesn’t come cheap.

By the time you’ve budgeted for getting to wildlife areas, sleeping at remote bush lodges and paying national park fees, the totals can quickly mount up. Add a trek up Mt Kilimanjaro or a week on Zanzibar and prices will climb even higher.

Yet, if you’re flexible with your plans and don’t mind roughing things a bit, travel in Tanzania  can be surprisingly reasonable. Transportation and accommodation are two areas where it’s possible to significantly cut costs, by taking trains or buses rather than flying, and staying in hostels or simple guesthouses instead of upmarket lodges. Dining local style is another cost-saver, and even wildlife safaris can be surprisingly affordable if you visit lesser-known national parks , travel in the low season and sleep at campsites rather than lodges.  

Here’s a guide to daily costs in Tanzania, along with some tips and tricks to help you save.

• Basic room for two: US$30–65
• Double room at an upmarket hotel: US$200+  
• Wildlife safari per person per day, including meals, transport and wildlife drives: US$150–800+

Average daily cost: US$50–300+ 

1. Be flexible with your timing

Many things, including international flights and certain park fees, will be cheaper during the low (rainy) season from March to May. Lodges in some areas close, and hiking routes  and getting around away from the tarmac can be muddy and wet. However, landscapes are lush and green countrywide, birding is wonderful and crowds are non-existent. Prices, especially for accommodations, also tend to be lower during the shoulder season months from November to early December, in February and from late May to early June.

2. Camp or stay in budget hotels

You can save significantly on accommodation costs by camping or sleeping in hostels and budget hotels, at least for part of your trip. If you camp as part of a safari or trek, most operators rent out equipment inexpensively so you don’t need to carry your own. Especially on the mainland, hostels and local-style hotels are generally simple, clean and comfortable, and many offer a range of dorm beds and private rooms.

3. Dine local style

It’s no hardship to dine local style in Tanzania, enjoying the country’s abundant local fruits and vegetables, freshly caught seafood on the coast and filling meals of rice and beans or ugali (cornmeal porridge) and sauce, all for just a few dollars or less. If you eat all your meals local style, it’s easy to keep food costs under US$10 per day. 

4. Take the local buses, trains and ferries

Bus travel offers significant savings over domestic flights or vehicle hire (unless you're in a group), and it's a good way to get introduced to local life. To smooth your travels, book several days in advance on popular routes to get a good seat, depart as early in the day as possible and pay a few extra dollars for "luxury" service.

Train travel is also a real bargain, although very slow. One of the country’s two main lines is currently being upgraded, but the other, Tazara , runs regularly between Dar es Salaam and New Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia, and offers a slice of local life as it slowly makes its way through a corner of Nyerere National Park and on into the scenic Southern Highlands . For travel between the mainland and Zanzibar, ferries run several times each day and are cheaper than flights.

5. Creatively plan your safari

By visiting smaller or lesser-known parks, camping outside park boundaries, visiting during low season and joining up with a group if you’re traveling solo, it’s possible to significantly whittle down per-day safari costs. For example, entry fees at Ruaha National Park  – which offers excellent wildlife watching – are only US$30 per person per day, compared with US$70 per day for Serengeti National Park . Location is also key when choosing accommodations. It’s always cheaper to stay outside park boundaries, and camps and lodges near smaller or less-visited parks will generally be less expensive than those around the major northern circuit destinations.

Joining a group will enable you to split transport costs for both getting to and getting around inside the parks and can result in major savings. Four to five people is generally an ideal size: check the seating configuration of the vehicle and keep in mind whether someone will get stuck in a middle seat without good views of the animals.

6. Skip the safari and head south

Tanzania’s northern safari circuit, which includes Serengeti park and Ngorongoro Crater , is the most-visited region of the country, and prices for everything around the parks are generally higher than in the seldom-visited south. To really keep costs down and have an amazing Tanzanian cultural experience , consider exploring the southeastern coast , taking in Kilwa , Lindi and Mikindani, or the southwest, from Iringa down towards Mbeya and Lake Nyasa. The far west , around Tabora, Kigoma and Kipili, on Lake Tanganyika, will also be significantly cheaper and offers a wonderful introduction to Tanzanian life and culture. For beach vacations , sticking to the mainland coast will often be less expensive than Zanzibar, and you’ll have all those beautiful beaches mostly to yourself, without Zanzibar’s crowds.

7. Hike rather than trek

Summiting Kilimanjaro is an amazing experience, but exploring the mountain’s lower slopes is equally fascinating. Rather than a trek to the top, for which you’ll need to pay close to US$2000 or more, consider a day hike on Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes, visiting a coffee plantation and getting to know the local Chagga people. Other alternatives include trekking on Mt Meru (in Arusha National Park ) and village-to-village hiking in northeastern Tanzania’s Usambara range.

8. Use ride-sharing apps to get around

Dalla-dallas (shared minivans) and boda-boda (motorcycle taxis) are the cheapest ways of getting around , with fares under US$1, although accidents are common, especially with boda-boda . A safer alternative is to use one of the ride-sharing apps that operate in larger cities and towns. Fares for private taxis are also reasonable, starting from around US$5 or less for a short ride; get the name of a reliable driver from your hotel.

Ever wondered what the safari prices are made of? This article explains how the tour operators in Tanzania make them up and why the trips to this country are often more expensive than those to the neighboring destinations - and why they are better.

Tanzania offers the best safaris in the world. Again and again, Tanzania wins tourism awards for its incredible national parks. Being the best also means that Tanzanian safaris are the most expensive within East Africa.

While neighboring East African countries may offer general wildlife viewing safaris, only Tanzania has the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Zanzibar. Tanzania has the highest population of elephants in the region and the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro.

One of the reasons for the elevated cost is that Tanzania offers unique attractions found nowhere else in the world. There are several other contributors to the overall price of safaris in Tanzania, the most prominent being park entrance fees. These fees are set by the government and no tour operator is exempt from this per-client expense. Individual safari schedules, preferred parks and duration of the entire safari also have an influence on the overall price.

Tanzania Safari Types: Group, Private or Self-Drive?

There are three safari options in Tanzania: group safaris, private safaris and self-drive safaris. Let’s look at all three:

Group safaris

Group safaris are very popular in Tanzania. They offer the chance to attend a game drive in a vehicle that is full or nearly full. Guests sign up for a pre-scheduled safari program but do not personally know the other members of the safari with whom they will be sharing a vehicle. Most group safaris utilize camping or mid-range lodges for accommodations.

Group safaris offer the chance to participate in a game drive by compromising one’s individual schedule. The reason for choosing such is to reduce the price and spread the cost of the safari across all members of the tour, but could also be to make friends and meet new people during your adventure.

Some drawbacks of this option include different priorities of all group members, and time spent waiting for a larger group. A group of eight people will always take longer to finish up a meal, head out for the day or reach a long distance than a car with few people. A group must agree on which wildlife to prioritize, when to head to accommodations for the night, and what time to set out in the morning. If a group does not all have the same interests or priorities on safari then some members must sacrifice for a general consensus. Private safaris

Self-driven safaris

There is the option of self-renting a car and driving on your own to the national parks. However, this is not recommended for those unfamiliar with Tanzania for the following reasons:

• A safari is greatly enriched by the knowledge and wisdom of an experienced safari guide. Their trained eyes can spot an animal from a great distance, or determine how recently an elephant passed over the road. A guided tour means a wealth of knowledge and a more culturally-relevant experience in Tanzania.
• If you get lost without a guide, you may be in trouble! Driver-guides know the national parks very well; you will not lose time getting lost in the bush with a driver. This is even more important if you have vehicle trouble or a flat tire: if you have more serious car problems, tour companies usually send another car so you may continue your safari, but if you are self-driving you will be on your own to find a mechanic and a garage (which are not easy to locate in the remote park areas), and your safari will be on hold until the vehicle is repaired.
• Safari guides communicate through car radios to share when the Big Five are spotted. Unless you are a fluent Swahili speaker and know the local slang for animal names, you could miss out on seeing an elusive leopard without a guide.
• Self-driven safaris also mean self-organized. Not only will you spend a great deal of time planning and reading reviews to book your own accommodations, but you will also have to locate them all on your own! It is not an easy endeavor to drive through unmarked roads in remote areas of Tanzania to find your lodgings, and perhaps impossible to navigate if you are not a fluent Swahili speaker.

Price factors for Tanzania safari

We recognize that Tanzanian safari prices are higher than neighboring countries. However, consider the size of Tanzania - it is the largest country in East Africa. It has a higher population of wildlife and more diversity in national parks. Park fees are one of the main factors for the overall higher price, but note that park fees contribute towards rangers, environmental conservation throughout the country and anti-poaching campaigns to protect endangered wildlife. Other contributors include lodging costs and tour operator costs.

Some national parks throughout Tanzania have different fees. Serengeti, for instance, has a higher per-day fee than other parks, while Tarangire, Arusha National Park and Manyara all have the same entry fee.

Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater are UNESCO Heritage Sites. As such, specific approaches are taken to preserve nature in a manner that aligns with this designation, and the modest fee increase helps to cover these costs. These two destinations have higher fees as a result.

Some areas are designated Wildlife Management Areas and thus, park fees for these locations go towards the local authorities’ important work of caring for Tanzania’s incredible wildlife.

Hotel/lodging costs

A great safari experience includes staying at a lodge or hotel. Returning from a game drive to a beautiful room, enjoying a hot shower and relaxing on the veranda with a cool drink in-hand push a good day in the savannah to a great day on safari. However, there is an added cost to staying in a hotel or lodge and it makes up a great deal of the guest's overall safari price.

Why are Tanzanian lodges more expensive than other locations? It is common for meals to be inclusive of one’s accommodation fees, so the cost covers food, water and lodging, not just a night’s stay. The staff are usually specifically trained in hospitality and fluent in English.

These lodges offer top hospitality, pay employees a fair wage according to their higher education. Guests notice a higher price-point, but they may not automatically realize the direct link between their hotel bill and staff receiving a fair salary.

Further, hotels that operate in protected areas have to take more measures to ensure their minimal impact on the environment and sometimes pay additional fees. Therefore, guests pay a higher cost to stay in these specialty locations.

Vehicle fuel, maintenance, amortization (and other transportation)

Four-wheel drive Land Cruisers are essential for traveling to and through Tanzania’s national parks. Altezza’s safari cars are not only vehicles for travel, but we have outfitted them for comfort and enjoyment during game drives. In Altezza’s safari vehicles, guests have access to a mini-fridge for cool drinks, functioning outlets to charge devices or cameras, and even Wi-Fi internet!

Reputable companies, such as Altezza, do not push the life expectancy of safari vehicles. We drive them for around 10 years before we bring in fresh cars so that our guests are sure of the integrity of the vehicles. Regular maintenance is performed on all vehicles to ensure they are up to a high standard and surpass the minimum safety regulations.

A Land Cruiser on full-day safari uses approximately 40 liters of fuel each day.

Of course, for premium safaris with scheduled air travel in a bush plane is an additional cost, which is more expensive than driving by car. However, for those interested in an adventure by plane, there are few other locations in the world that offer such a spectacular experience, an aerial safari in nearly a ‘private flight’ for such a low cost, considering the incredible adventure.

Is a 3-day Tanzania trip too short?

“A 3-day safari is very short, but whether it is too short depends on your expectations. If you have the option, I would definitely recommend adding a few extra days. More time gives you a chance to settle in and really immerse yourself in the bush experience. However, if time or budget constraints push towards a short trip, I would say a shorter safari is better than no safari at all. Three days will give you an opportunity to get out there and get a feel for what it is all about. And hopefully you’ll be able to return someday with more time on your hands. It is never a good idea to try and fit too much into a safari, and this is especially true on a 3-day safari. Remember to take into account that quite a bit of your time will be taken up by getting to and from your start and end points. So long as you are realistic on what you can achieve on a safari of that duration, it is surely worth going.”

What can I fit in during a 3-day safari in Tanzania?

“There are many 3-day safaris on offer in Tanzania, so you do have choices on what you can fit into your safari. As you will be away for only 2 nights, I would recommend sleeping both nights in the same location. The most-popular option for a holiday involving a 3-day Tanzanian safari is the Northern circuit. This comprises four parks: Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara National Park and Tarangire National Park. To visit all four parks in 3 days is technically possible, but certainly not recommended. A more realistic option would be to visit the world-famous Serengeti and drop into the Ngorongoro Crater en route. Alternatively, Lake Manyara and Tarangire are both close to Arusha National Park, and either could be combined with a visit to the Ngorongoro Crater on a 3-day safari. There are some 3-day safari options in the south of the country as well. Either Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) or Ruaha National Park can be visited on its own as a stand-alone fly-in safari from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar. Mikumi National Park can be visited on a short road safari. The drive from Dar es Salaam takes about 5 hours each way.”

What kind of accommodation can I expect?

“Tanzania has an established tourism industry, and it offers a large range of accommodation options. There are lots of budget camping tours available. This is not only the most budget-friendly way to travel, but it is the best way to really immerse yourself in the environment. A step up from this in terms of comfort would be a budget lodge tour. These budget accommodation options often lie outside the parks, but safari operators routinely use them as a base for game drives. All the popular parks have some mid-range options as well. These are usually larger, no-frills hotels in and outside the parks and reserves. Going up the scale even more are luxury accommodation options. On a short safari, these high-end lodgings are commonly used on fly-in safari packages. Great food and service are the norm, but the style differs greatly. Many are small designer ecolodges, often made to blend into the environment. If you want to do a Tanzanian safari in style, this might be the right choice for you.”

Which animals can I expect to see?

“Tanzania has an incredible wealth of wildlife, and which animals you may see will largely be determined by which parks you visit. All popular parks have a good variety of safari animals. However, the parks and reserves all have distinct differences in terrain, and this is reflected in the wildlife that is commonly encountered in each of them. If you don’t mind a lot of driving, it is possible to visit the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater on a 3-day road safari. This combination gives you a reasonable chance of seeing all the Big Five in a short time. Ngorongoro is the only reliable park in Tanzania to see black rhino in the wild. The Serengeti and the Crater are both good for predators, and lions are particularly easy to find in both. Spotting a leopard on a 3-day safari is a bit trickier, but you never know your luck. To reduce driving time, you could fly in and out of the Serengeti and skip on the Ngorongoro Crater and its rhinos, or drive one way via the Crater and fly the other. A 3-day trip to Ruaha or Nyerere in the south can be very productive. Predator sightings are more hit-and-miss, but you’ve a very good chance of seeing lion. The southern parks are known for wild dog, and Ruaha has a large variety of unusual antelope species, including the impressive greater kudu.”

How much will this safari cost?

“It is difficult to put an actual price on a 3-day safari, as so many variables must be factored in. Expect a starting price of US$600 per person for a budget camping tour, going up to about US$1,000 per person for a mid-range lodge tour. Luxury tours are more expensive. You’re more likely to get a good deal when traveling in the low season. Once you have decided on your priorities, get a few quotes. Tanzania’s parks and reserves are some of Africa’s best, and being able to visit them is an incredible experience. Unsurprisingly, however, you will pay a premium for the privilege. Accommodation options range from budget to mid-range to luxury. Camping is a great way to reduce costs, assuming you don’t mind the basic facilities, and it will bring you closer to nature. The price of a safari also depends on whether you book a private or a group tour. There are many 3-day road safaris on offer, but with such limited time, you might want to consider a fly-in safari. This is usually more expensive than a road safari.”

The Tanzania safari price  does not include  the following costs:

• International flights. International flight costs are not included in the Tanzania Safari Tours prices.
• Visa costs. Some countries are not exempted from the visa exception rules of Tanzania so may require a Tanzania Visa for entering into this country. This is also excluded from the package costs.
• Vaccinations. Some vaccinations are required before you enter Tanzania. These vaccination costs are not included in the Tanzania safari prices.
• Travel insurance. Before your travel you must include a Tanzania travel insurance as this is not included on the Tanzania safari prices. Take your time and choose a travel insurance that fits your adventure, specially if you are climbing the Great Kilimanjaro Mountain.

Elements that influence Serengeti safari tours price

The flight to tanzania.

There is no direct flight between Tanzania and most countries. Therefore a stopover in Cape Town, South Africa may be required before reaching Dar es Salaam, the main Tanzania tourist hub on the east coast.

Due to this stopover, flights to Tanzania tend to be more expensive than other destinations offering direct flights to other African safari destinations.

The prices of flights from the U.K. or U.S. can vary according to the dates of the stay and the chosen airline.

Several transport options are available in Tanzania but not all offer the same experience and speed of connection visitors want when travelling between parks and reserves.

Intercontinental flights

Arriving into Tanzania will typically involve taking a connecting flight from Dubai, Amsterdam or Johannesburg, South Africa, adding to the overall cost of a safari, the cost of which will vary depending on time of year and the flight distance.

International flights into the country also arrive via Dar es Salaam (DAR) airport for visitors wondering  how to get to Tanzania . DAR airport is located 18km south of Dar Es Salaam and a  Tanzania visa .

Local transport

Due to this, private charter flights are commonly used to quickly access isolated private reserves and concessions, sometimes the only way to access them.

Others choose to go on self drive safaris and rent their own cars/4×4’s and use the roads of the national parks. This is a more affordable option and offers visitors the comfort of staying as long as they wish in each location.

Flights from Serengeti to Dar es Salaam

Flights can start from USD $300, flying from Dar es Salaam Serengeti (DAR) airport to Seronera (SEU), a distance of approximately 690 km taking 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Accommodation

The quality of accommodation options available in the Serengeti is generally quite high. There are many luxurious lodges available, some of which can only be accessed by plane transfer however, thus adding to the costs.

More budget friendly accommodation options include camping options, of which many parks have at least 1-2 designated areas.

Most lodges will typically have some or all of breakfast, lunch and dinner options included in the overall lodge safari package.

Parks entrance fee

National parks and reserves charge park fees per person including entrance fees for guides, as well as vehicle entry fees. Entrance fees for the Serengeti include:

• Adults $60: USD
• Children (5-16 years): $30 USD
• Children below 5 years of age: Free

The cost of the entrance fee may be included in your lodge or camp overall price.

Many visitors will also be interested in other activities beyond the main safari and wildlife excursions including walking safaris, mountain biking on Ngorongoro or quad biking adventures, all of which add to overall costs. Comparable to Europe, these prices are lower.

A Serengeti balloon flight costs US$599 per person (this includes the Tanapa ballooning fee of US$40).

This rate includes a transfer from your lodge or camp to the departure balloon site, the balloon flight itself, and a champagne breakfast (after landing). The flight will last between 50 and 70 minutes.

Travel Insurance

Safari trips can result in unfortunate events happening, like contracting an illness from contaminated water or falling ill from a mosquito bite.

Visitors may need medical attention while abroad so it’s important to ensure an adequate travel insurance policy is in place which will cover you in the event of an accident or injury.

Visitors should check to see if they have already through their credit card company and workplace benefits. If not, it is recommended to ensure travel insurance is purchased prior to travel to cover:

If on a budget, visitors can save two thirds of their daily expenses on transport costs by opting for a car/4×4 rental compared to plane transfers.

Car rental costs start from £90/$115 for a package with basic insurance. Tanzania safari prices increase if visitors book a 4×4 safari vehicle or campervan.

Guests staying at lodges should note the lodges will likely pick up guests and drive them to the lodge, with prices often included in the accommodation.

Accommodation and food

This will vary significantly depending on the type of accommodation selected. Guests can budget £15/$20 a night and upwards for one night camping and can purchase groceries at local supermarkets.

For lodges, nightly rates will cost several hundred dollars, typically with meals included.

Is a cheap Serengeti safari possible?

Safari prices in the Serengeti are expensive in general, especially for accommodation. However, visitors can be smart and take measures to keep their bank balance in check including:

• DIY organize your own safari
• Sleeping in a campervan/van with a rooftop tent
• Drive yourself around the country
• Prepare your meals and limit eating out at restaurants
• Limit your activities other than the main safari excursions

Travel seasons

Visitors looking to avail of a cheap Serengeti safari on a lower budget should travel in the low season which is December to March. This time of year however is also unfortunately a period of hot, muggy weather.

April and May (northern circuit parks still get quite a few visitors unlike the southern and western circuit parks, where many lodges close down). June and July are the best months to see the wildebeest migration.

May is still mid-season and will allow for cooler weather at still reasonable rates.

• Visitors planning an 8 night stay during Peak Season (July – Oct) in a premier camp can expect to pay around $9,000 to $10,000 per person
• Visitors planning an 8 night stay during Off-Peak Season (Sep – Dec) in a moderate camp can expect to pay around $5,500 per person

Affordable lodging options

If budget is the primary concern, and visitors don’t mind camping, then there are some overland camping trips (called mobile safaris) available as well as budget Serengeti safari packages.

Excluding international flights and plane transfers:

• Visitors planning a 6 night safari staying at two different tented camps can expect to pay around $3,600 – $4,300 per person
• Visitors planning a similar 6 night mobile camping safari can expect to pay around $2,200 per person, prices can vary

Affordable Serengeti safari packages tend to be for longer safaris (7+ nights) whilst higher cost safaris are typical of a shorter 3 or 4 night safari.

Serengeti safari approximate costs

The cost of a trip to the Serengeti can start from around US$140 per day for an all-inclusive package, including shuttle service to and from the Delta, accommodation, game viewing and meals.

Visitors can spend much more than this with customised trips and add-ons such as trips to Ngorongoro Crater, Selous Game Reserve and neighbouring Kenya.

Note that off season rates from January to March are usually much lower than normal, with both mid and high-end lodges knocking as much as 50% off.

My experience visiting Tanzania for safari was nothing short of life-changing. However, it’s essential to visit at the right time of year, depending on what you want to do and see.

Recently I’ve been flooded with questions on the topic, so I’ve spent the last few weeks compiling the most comprehensive and user-friendly guide available on the best time to visit Tanzania .

This guide will help you to quickly and easily choose the very best time for your adventure.

Each season in Tanzania has something unique to offer, so I’ve created six unique 5 day Tanzania itineraries , where you’ll find an itinerary suited to most times of year.

My personal favourite month to visit Tanzania is September. The weather is incredible, it’s less busy and it’s also better value than August. The Mara River crossing, part of the Great Migration, is in full swing in Northern Serengeti.

What’s more, big cat spotting is out of this world! If you fancy a challenge, you can climb Kilimanjaro in September too as part of your Tanzania Itinerary and then relax in Zanzibar at the end!

As a starting point for finding your perfect month to visit, I’ve put together a visual guide to the best time to visit Tanzania below.

This visual guide gives you a country-wide overview of the months, including weather, costs, wildlife events and hiking. As you’ll see, every month has something special to offer.

The best time overall for safari, seeing the big five and visiting Zanzibar (for some much deserved relaxation) is the long dry season from June to October.

For seeing baby animals, lush landscapes, hiking Kilimanjaro and visiting Zanzibar, the short dry season of January and February is fantastic.

To witness the Mara River Crossing – the highlight of the Great Migration, where millions of wildebeests cross the crocodile-infested river – the best time is mid-June to September and mid-October to mid-November.

The Important Role of the Rains

The variable timing of the rains dictate the timings of most of the natural events in Tanzania. If the rains arrive a little early, the natural events will happen earlier and, conversely, if the rains come a little late, the natural events will happen later.

The timing of the rains dictate the timings of most of the natural events in Tanzania.

January and February in Tanzania

Short dry season

January and February are Tanzania’s Short Dry Season. The parks are swathed in green from the preceding wet season.

Showcasing the calving season and related big cat activity, it’s a fantastic time to visit Tanzania at lower prices compared to the long dry season. Due to the weather, it’s also a great time to incorporate Zanzibar into your trip. Last but not least, It’s also the best time of year to hike Kilimanjaro as it’s dry and warm.

What Weather & Temperatures can I Expect in January and February?

The weather in January and February is excellent, spanning Tanzania’s short dry season. There is a chance of some short showers. However, these are usually at night. The parks are transformed to green from the short rains which usually occur from mid-October to mid-December.

What are the Costs Like and How Busy are the Parks in January and February?

Prices are good at this time of year – January and February are classed as low / shoulder season along with October and November. Parks are quieter compared to the peak season making for excellent wildlife viewing.

Wildlife Viewing and The Great Migration in January and February

In January and February, the Great Migration calving season is underway on the Ndutu Plains in southern Serengeti which creates related big cat action as they hunt the new arrivals to feed their families.

Wildlife viewing is slightly more challenging compared to the long dry season, due to the dense vegetation brought to life by the preceding long rains. A good guide is essential but once you spot wildlife, the lush vegetation and lighting makes this one of the best times of year for photography.

Birdwatching in January and February

January and February are exciting months for birdwatching in Tanzania as this period coincides with the northern hemisphere’s winter, prompting many migratory birds to seek warmer climates in Africa.

You can expect to witness the arrival of various migratory bird species from Europe and Asia, such as the European Bee-eater, White Stork, Barn Swallow, Yellow Wagtail, Common Sandpiper and Osprey.

Hiking Kilimanjaro in January and February

Late December to early March is the best time of year to hike Mount Kilimanjaro. The weather is relatively dry, and the temperatures are milder compared to other times of the year. The skies are usually clear, offering stunning views and photo opportunities. It’s worth noting that the higher elevations of the mountain can still reach sub-zero temperatures, especially at night.

Zanzibar in January and February

Zanzibar is excellent at this time of year – clear skies, calm waters, and comfortable temperatures. The sea is excellent for swimming and water visibility is at its best for diving and snorkelling, allowing you to explore Zanzibar’s magnificent coral reefs and marine life.

March, April & May in Tanzania

Long rainy season

During March, April and May, Tanzania experiences its long rainy season, commonly known as the “long rains.”

This period is characterised by more frequent and heavier rainfall compared to other times of the year. The rain rejuvenates the landscapes which become lush and green. It’s a great time to visit Tanzania on a budget. However, you will have to contend with intermittent and sometimes heavy rainfall, often in the afternoons.

What Weather & Temperatures can I Expect in March, April & May?

The long rains span March, April and May, making them the wettest months of the year in Tanzania. The rain typically comes in the form of afternoon showers or thunderstorms, which can last for several hours. Central and northern locations, such as Serengeti and Tarangire National Park usually experience more rainfalls compared to coastal regions.

The long rainy season is characterised by high humidity levels, especially in coastal areas. The combination of warm temperatures and humidity can make it feel quite close.

What are the Costs like and How Busy are the Parks in March, April & May?

The long rains are the best time to visit Tanzania on a tight budget and being low season, the parks are quiet. It’s worth noting that many of the accommodations in southern parks close over this period. However, most of the accommodation in the more popular northern circuit remains open. Flooding is also possible at some national parks.

Wildlife Viewing and The Great Migration in March, April & May

Wildlife viewing in the long rains can be more challenging as water is more abundant compared to the dry season and as such there is less activity around the water holes. Also the blooming vegetation in the lush green national parks provides more hiding places for wildlife. On the flip side, the rains bring fresh vegetation and the parks are teeming with life and many animals give birth during this time.

Birdwatching in March, April & May

March, April and May offer unique opportunities for birdwatching due to the increased presence of migratory bird species, lush vegetation, and fewer crowds.

The wet season, also known as the green season, coincides with the breeding season for many resident bird species in Tanzania. This means you have the chance to observe various courtship displays, nest-building, and other breeding behaviours.

During the wet season, you can witness the departure to their breeding grounds of some of the birds from Europe and northern Asia who spent the winter in Tanzania. You will also see other migratory species arriving in Tanzania at this time.

Hiking Kilimanjaro in March, April & May

For most people, it’s not recommended to climb Kilimanjaro from late May to early June as the trails become slippery and muddy. The heavy rainfall and poor conditions make hiking much more challenging and increase the risk of accidents. Furthermore, the summit, which is already very cold, even at the warmest times of year, is now snow-capped. The Marangu Route especially should be avoided.

The wet season can result in cloud cover which makes it hard to take photos and experience the panoramic views for which Kilimanjaro is famous.

Tour companies still conduct hikes at this time of year for those who relish the additional challenge of the snow-capped summit. The other benefit that draws some people to climb at this time of year is that the trails and campsites are extremely quiet.

Zanzibar in March, April & May

Whilst there will still be some sunny moments to enjoy, be prepared for heavy rainfall especially in April. Rainfall often comes in the form of intermittent downpours.

Mosquito activity is at its highest in the rainy season, making malaria precautions particularly important. Some accommodation and services close over the wet period.

On the positive side, this time of year offers a budget-friendly and quieter Zanzibar experience.

June & July in Tanzania

First half of long dry season

June is the start of the long dry season which spans 4.5 months and marks the start of the Great Migration. Whilst both June and July are classed as high season, July is typically busier and more expensive than June.

Both June and July are very popular months to visit Tanzania for safari, to hike Kilimanjaro and for relaxation in Zanzibar.

What Weather & Temperatures can I Expect in June and July?

June and July are part of the long dry season in Tanzania, which means you can expect mostly clear skies and minimal rainfall. The weather is generally cooler and more comfortable compared to the wet season.

Coastal areas and islands like Zanzibar experience pleasant weather during June and July. The sea is calm and clear, making it a good time for water activities, such as diving, snorkelling, and relaxing on the beaches.

What are the Costs like and How Busy are the Parks in June and July?

June is the start of the high season and as such costs are high in June. Moving into the peak of the high season, costs are slightly higher again in July and peak in August.

In June and July the number of safari trucks in the park does start to increase, however, the parks are still not as busy as the peak month of August.

Compared to other popular safari destinations such as Kenya, the higher costs of a Tanzania safari and the vast size of the parks such as the Serengeti, helps to ensure Tanzania’s parks never get too overcrowded.

Wildlife Viewing and The Great Migration in June and July

June and July, along with the rest of the dry season, are considered excellent times for wildlife viewing in Tanzania. The lack of rain means the vegetation is less dense, making it easier to spot animals. Animals tend to congregate around water holes in the dry conditions which leads to associated big cat activity as they hunt the congregation of prey.

Late May and early June marks the beginning of the Great Migration, where millions of wildebeest and zebras start their journey from the southern plains to the northern Serengeti in search of fresh grazing.

From early May to late July the wildebeests are usually crossing the Grumeti river in Tanzania’s Western Corridor.

Birdwatching in June and July

June and July are arguably not quite as good for bird watching as Jan – April and Nov – Dec. However, there is still plenty of birdlife to see –  many migratory bird species from Europe and Asia are still present in Tanzania during these months.

June and July coincide with the breeding season for many resident bird species in Tanzania. This means you have the opportunity to witness courtship displays, nest-building, and other breeding behaviours.

Clear skies and minimal rainfall provides excellent conditions for bird spotting.

Kilimanjaro in June and July

Compared to the December to March Kilimanjaro season, the June to October season is equally dry but cooler in temperature.

Early June, whilst being better for hiking Kilimanjaro than March to May, can still be a little cold and the skies are still a little cloudy which can hide the amazing views which Kilimanjaro is famous for. Therefore, mid to late June and July are preferable.

If you want to play it safe for your Kilimanjaro hike, opt for July through to September.

Zanzibar in June and July

June and July is a great time to visit Zanzibar – the weather is dry with minimal rainfall with temperatures around 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F). You can expect sunny and clear skies, making it a great time for outdoor activities.

It’s a good time for snorkelling as the sea is usually calm and visibility underwater is excellent.

August & September in Tanzania

Second half of long dry season

August and September form the second half of the long dry season and feature one of the earth’s greatest wildlife spectacles, where millions of wildebeests cross the crocodile-infested Mara River as part of The Great Migration.

August is the most popular month of the year to visit Tanzania which makes it the most expensive and busiest. September is my favourite month to visit Tanzania as it comes with all the benefits of August whilst being a little quieter and prices are not quite so high.

What Weather & Temperatures can I Expect in August & September?

August and September, along with June and July, are part of the dry season in Tanzania, which means you can expect mostly clear skies and minimal rainfall. The weather is generally cooler and more comfortable compared to the wet season.

Coastal areas and islands like Zanzibar experience pleasant weather during August & September. The sea is calm and clear, making it a good time for water activities, such as diving, snorkelling, and relaxing on the beaches.

What are the Costs like and How Busy are the Parks in August & September?

August and September are in Tanzania’s high season, which means costs are high relative to the low and shoulder seasons. September is usually better value than August as it’s not as busy as August, which is the most popular month of the year to visit Tanzania, in part because it fits with school holidays.

The parks have the highest volume of safari trucks in August. However, compared with other popular safari destinations the parks are still not busy enough to spoil the experience. One of the benefits of going on safari in Tanzania is that because the prices are typically higher than other safari destinations, it avoids overcrowding in the parks, which leads to a better game viewing experience. Tanzania also has some absolutely huge national parks, such as the Serengeti which also helps avoid it feeling too crowded at peak periods.

Wildlife Viewing and The Great Migration in August & September

Late July, August and September are some of my favourite months for wildlife viewing because the Wildebeest Mara River crossing is in full swing in the north of the Serengeti. This is arguably one of the most incredible wildlife spectacles on earth as millions of wildebeests cross over the crocodile-infested waters in search of fresh pastures.

Birdwatching in August & September

August and September are not quite as good for bird watching as Jan to April and Nov to Dec. However, there is still plenty of birdlife to see –  many migratory bird species from Europe and Asia are still present in Tanzania during these months.

Kilimanjaro in August & September

Compared to the The December to March Kilimanjaro Season, the June to October season is equally dry but cooler in temperature.

August and September are both popular months to climb Kilimanjaro. However, you will find September slightly quieter.

Zanzibar in August & September

August and September are a great time to visit Zanzibar – you can expect sunny and clear skies, making it a great time for outdoor activities.

Aug & Sept are a good time for snorkelling in Zanzibar as the sea is usually calm and visibility underwater is excellent.

Eid – al – Fitr takes place around 19th August. This is a four day Islamic festival which celebrates the end of the fast. It’s the biggest event of the year and people give each other gifts. Some restaurants may be closed over the 4 day period.

Tanzacat Open is a sailing competition including the “Zanzibar Raid” which takes place in late September to early October. The event is organised by the Dar es Salaam Yacht Club .

October, November & December in Tanzania

Short rainy season

Mid-October through to mid-December are Tanzania’s Short Rains period. Prices are lower compared to the preceding period as this is classed as shoulder season and parks are quieter .  

Whilst there are some rains in the afternoons, there is still great game viewing in the northern parks and it is one of the best periods for big cat spotting. During mid-October to mid-November the wildebeests cross back over the Mara River in the north of the Serengeti as part of the Great Migration.

• Great wildlife viewing as the number of tourists is much lower
• Wildebeests crossing back over Mara River from Kenya to Tanzania
• Dec is good for hiking Kilimanjaro
• Migratory birds arrive in Dec

• Some unpredictable rain in Zanzibar in mid-October to mid-December
• October & November too wet for hiking Kilimanjaro

What Weather & Temperatures can I Expect in October, November & December?

Whilst there are some rains in mid-October to mid-December, these are often in the afternoons. Early morning game drives are usually dry and pleasant.

What are the Costs like and How Busy are the Parks in October, November and December?

Mid-October through to the end of November are classed as shoulder season and prices are lower than high season, which runs from June to mid-October. However, mid-December prices start to increase slightly. Parks are much quieter vs peak season.

Wildlife Viewing and The Great Migration in October, November and December

Wildlife viewing is excellent in October, November and December – whilst spotting animals can be more challenging due to the dense green vegetation, the parks have far fewer vehicles which offsets this.

From mid-October to mid-November the Great Migration continues as around 2 million migratory wildebeests cross back over the crocodile-infested Mara River in the north of the Serengeti.

This period (especially around November) is one of the best months to see big cats as it can coincide with the beginning of the birthing season for various herbivores, which leads to exciting big cat action. Predators are attracted to these areas for easy prey. Birthing times can vary, depending on the timings of the rains.

Birdwatching in October, November and December

November kicks off the birding season in Tanzania. This is when migratory birds from Europe and Northern Africa start to arrive. A large number of the resident birds are nesting and in breeding plumage.

Kilimanjaro in October, November and December

October is cool and dry and is a popular time to climb Kilimanjaro.

November is wet which makes the hike more challenging. However, it’s not as wet as April and May.

December through to March is arguably the best period to climb Kilimanjaro due to warm and dry conditions.

Zanzibar in October, November and December

During mid-October to mid-December Zanzibar experiences unpredictable weather; however, storms and rainfall don’t usually last long.

The pros of visiting Zanzibar at this time of year are much lower costs and diving conditions are great, especially in November.

Below I’ve provided guidance the best times to visit the most popular parks in Tanzania’s Northen Circuit.

Best Time to Visit Serengeti National Park

The very best time to visit Serengeti National Park is during the Wildebeest Mara River crossing – the highlight of The Great Migration.

Two million Wildebeests cross the crocodile-infested Mara River in Northern Serengeti around late July, August and September and then back again late October to early November. Times can vary slightly each year so August or early September would be the safest bet.

June to October (dry season) – as there is little to no rain in this period, the bush begins thinning out and the landscapes turn from green to orange. With water suddenly scares, animals start to congregate around water holes. Both these factors make wildlife viewing much easier in this period.

The sun shines and the weather is great during this period with temperatures around 25°C / 77°F.

There are fewer mosquitos at this time of year which reduces the risk of malaria.

The highlights of the one of the earth’s greatest wildlife specticles, The Great Migration take place during this period. The Grumeti river crossing takes place in Tanzania’s western corridor around May to July.

Around mid-July to September the famous Mara River crossing takes place in northern Serengeti as the wildebeests cross from Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya. mid-October to mid-November the wildebeests cross back over the Mara River into Tanzania again for calving.

The parks can get crowded at this time of year although due to the size of parks such as Serengeti and Tanzania’s higher costs they are never as busy as other safari destinations such as Kenya. Temperatures can drop to 14°C / 57°F at night.

If you want to see baby animals and the related big cat activity then January and February are your best best as the wildebeests are calving in Southern Serengeti which attracts the big cats. November time is also excellent for big cats as other herbivores give birth around this time. Parks are also quiet in terms of tourists at this time of year making spotting easier although you do have to contend with denser vegetion.

Best Time to Visit Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater is great for safari all year round as most animals don’t migrate. The crater is probably one of the best opportunities you will have to spot the endangered black rhino in the world.

The best time to see lots of baby animals in a lush and green environment such as zebras and wildebeests is the beginning of the year.

If you want to see as many animals as possible, visibility is best in the long dry season between June and October.

Birdwatching is excellent all year round. However November to April sees the arrival of the migratory birds from Europe and North Africa. This time of year is also breeding season for the resident birds which allows you to see them with their beautiful plumage.

The most spectacular landscape and flours are during the wet season. Lake Magadi’s higher water levels at this time draw in more flamingos.

There is usually afternoon showers in the short rainy season in November and December. However it’s quite easy to plan your safaris around the rain.

The heavy downpours in the long rainy season make safaris a little more challenging.

Best Time to Visit Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is is part of Tanzania’s Northern safari circuit and is famous for its huge elephant population, rare tree climbing lions, massive red termite mounds, diverse birdlife and ancient baobab trees.

The best time to visit Tarangire National park is during the long dry season from late June to October. Migratory herds arrive in search of water due to the depleting water supplies which encourage animals to congregate around Tarangire River and the swamps of the river valley. Mosquitos and flies are at their lowest levels of the year so the risk of malaria is at its lowest too.

Local guides still recommend visiting at any time of year as the park always has something to offer.

Tarangire’s migratory herds such as the Elephants, oryx and gerenuk, leave the park animals move up into the Masaai steppe during the short wet season in November and return at the start of the long dry season in June.

There is some unpredictability in terms of the exact arrival and departure dates of the migratory herds. If the long wet season finishes early then the migratory heads come to the park earlier and leave earlier. Conversely if the long rains finish late then the migratory herds arrive at the park late and leave later.

The shorts rains usually start around mid-October and breath life into the park. Many animals start giving birth to babies, vegetation turns a vibrant green and flours bloom. You will be able to see the resident animals such as antelopes and buffaloes.

Bird watching is at its best in the wet season when the migratory birds are present.

The most challenging time to visit is during the long rains in March, April and May as there are regular heavy downpours normally in the afternoon.

Best Time to Visit Lake Manyara National Park

Due to lake Manyara expanding and flooding surrounding areas in recent years, the park is not as great as it once was. However, it’s still worth a visit as you can go on a traditional boat on the lake, and see game such as lions and elephants in the park.

The best time to visit Lake Manyara National Park is the same as the Serengeti with June to October being the best time.

Fortunately the best times to go on safari in Tanzania correspond perfectly with the best times to visit Zanzibar. These are the long dry season from June to October and the short dry season from January to February.

The best time to visit Tanzania for the wildebeest migration is late July to September when millions of Wilderbeasts cross the crocodile-infested mara river in the north of the Serengeti.

Other great migration events include:

Wildebeest migration and calving in the Southern Serengeti from January to mid-March.

Wildebeests crossing the Grumeti river as part of the great migration on Tanzania Western Corridor from May to July.

Wildebeests crossing back over the Mara river to the Kenya side around mid-Oct to mid-November.

Kilimanjaro is made of various bands with the top being the Uhuru Peak which is always extremely cold. Visiting during the warmer periods makes the peak slightly less cold vs other times of year.

The best time for hiking Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is actually very similar to the best time to visit Tanzania for safari and also Zanzibar. The best times is January to March which is the short dry period and the first 1/2 month of the long rains and mid-June to mid-October which is the long dry period and the first half month of the short rains.

Of these two fantastic periods for climbing Kilimanjaro, January to mid-March is the very best as the weather is slightly warmer compared to the later period.

The best time of year to visit Tanzania for bird watching is November onwards when the migratory birds from Europe and other parts of Africa start to arrive all the way through to April.

It’s worth noting that birdwatching is fantastic throughout the whole year in Tanzania.

Tanzania is not the cheapest safari destination so if you budget is really tight you might prefer to look at cheaper safari destinations such as Kenya. If however, you have your heart set on Tanzania and I completely understand why that might be the case, the cheapest time to visit would be during the long rains from March to April.

Typically most of the rain fall in the afternoon so you can usually schedule morning game drives to avoid the rain. Whilst many of the accommodations in the south close over this period, the more popular northen accommodations typically stay open and offer lower rates.

B eing surrounded by giraffes, elephants, lions, zebras, and cheetahs in Africa sounds like a dream come true. But it also sounds expensive. Getting a guide, secluded accommodations, and travel can add up. So, how much does an African safari cost? An African safari can cost between $200 and $1,600 per person per day. How Much Does an African Safari Cost on Average?

The cost of an African safari will vary depending on where it is, what type of accommodations you get, and what time of year you go.

The most budget-friendly, camping in a tent, will cost about $200 per person per day. The most luxurious African safari can cost up to $1,600 per person per day. 

Your African safari cost includes all park admission fees, meals, camping equipment, drinking water, and transportation. They can be a short one-day adventure to a multi-week long excursion. You should account for tipping your guides during your journey. The standard tip is $10 to $20 per person per day.

Things That Impact Your African Safari Cost 

You can do many things to cut your African safari cost, while other things will bring the price up. I always tend to focus on what’s important to me and splurge on those aspects. For instance, if you like staying in luxury accommodations, you can splurge on your stay and go during the off-season to save a little bit.  

The Length of Your Safari

Obviously, the total cost of your safari will be more the longer your safari is. However, the daily cost is cheaper when you book multiple days under one guide. It’s like buying in bulk at Sam’s Club. You save money in the long run.

The Time of Year You Go

There is a high and low season for African Safaris. The high season is when school is out, and during the dry season. There will be more tourists and higher costs from June to September on most safaris. 

The low season is during the rainy season, typically between March and May. The problem with going during the rainy season is animals don’t tend to come out as much. The best time to go on an African safari is during the winter, between January and February. 

Where Your Safari Is

The country and park you decide to do your safari in will sway the cost. Doing a safari that goes across multiple countries will cost more while staying in one park is less expensive. South Africa has some of the cheapest safari options because they have more self-drive options, and the parks are built better for these types of excursions. 

The Level of Accommodation

You can stay in everything from a camping tent that you could buy at your local outdoor store to permanent yurts with furniture and modern technologies. There are even resort-like stays that you can book for your African safari with pools, villas, and bar and restaurant service. 

Your Mode of Transportation

Driving yourself through one of the many parks and reserves is an option sometimes, but it’s not the best option. Your best bet is to book a guided safari because the guides know where all the animals like to go. That way, you’re more likely to see all the wildlife you want. 

Less costly guided safaris are also typically in open-roof minivans that they cram people into. The nicer African safari tours use nice jeeps that are entirely open, giving you a chance to see everything wherever you sit. 

How Many People Go On The Safari

The more people that come with you, the less your African safari will cost. Most accommodations will hold two people, and some will hold up to five. They will still charge per person for the safari. Even though, it will be less than if you go by yourself because you are sharing one accommodation.

You can go on a safari in different areas of Africa. Each location has unique wildlife that they are known for. You should choose a particular destination depending on what kind of African safari experience you want. Some destinations are also more budget-friendly. 

Kenya is the original safari destination. It makes sense, with multiple large game reserves, the great migration, and a slew of cultural experiences to encounter. Some of the best reserves to visit in Kenya are:

• Masai Mara National Reserve- The most popular park in Kenya.
• Samburu Game Reserve- Has unique wildlife, like Beisa Oryx, Reticulated Giraffes, and Somali Ostrich .
• Tsavo National Parks- The largest and most remote park in Kenya.
• Amboseli National Park- You can see Mount Kilimajaro at this park.
• Lake Nakuru National Park- Millions of flamingos and white rhinos live here .

There are many great lodges to stay at in and around these parks that will take you on a drive to see the wildlife every day. One that I recommend is Elephant Bedroom Camp. It gets its name because elephants frequent the grounds, making sure to say hello to all of the visitors. You may also see monkeys and Impalas from your luxury tent. 

This camp has all of the comforts that you would see at any modern accommodation, including a pool, hot and cold water, electricity, and WIFI. You will get a daily drive through the bush in an open-air vehicle, a picnic lunch, cultural visits, and entertainment by Samburu warriors.

If your dream is to see a gorilla or chimpanzee in the rainforest, then Uganda is the African safari destination for you. It’s different than most other African safaris in the way that the safaris in Uganda are set in rainforests instead of desert land. You can even stop by some amazing waterfalls along your safari. Some parks to check out in Uganda are:

• Murchison Falls National Park- Has various mammals, like giraffes, buffaloes, and crocodiles. 
• Bwindi Forest National Park- Has the largest population of endangered silverback gorillas. 
• Kibale Forest National Park- Has the highest diversity of primates in Africa.
• Mgahinga National Park- A large park spanning three countries where endangered silverback gorillas live. 
• Queen Elizabeth National Park- One of two places you can find lions that climb trees.

To be fully immersed in the rainforests that gorillas and chimpanzees roam, stay at Bwindi Lodge . You may get the chance to spot some birds and chimpanzees swinging from the trees in the Bwindi forest right from your room. There’s also a village nearby that has the award-winning Bwindi Bar.

Another advantage of staying at the Bwindi Lodge is you can trek into the forest to see the mountain gorillas and other wildlife instead of having to take a drive. They also have a waterfall trail for you to enjoy the landscape as well. 

Botswana is a lesser-known safari destination, so it will feel more exclusive at a smaller cost. Even though it has a variety of landscapes to view different types of wildlife. One of the most popular types of safaris you can do in Botswana is a boat safari, where you can see elephants and hippos. The best parks to see in Botswana are:

• Okavango Delta- The most popular park in Botswana, famous for boat safaris on the wilding channels.
• Chobe National Park- You can take a car to this park, making it more accessible. Elephants are a popular group here.
• The Kalahari- You can find a black-maned lion here during the wet seas on.
• Makgadikgadi Pans- Find unique African animals across glistening salt pans. 
• Moremi Wildlife Reserve- One of the most remote and diverse wildlife areas of Botswana.
