The USS Thunderchild (NCC-63549) was an Akira class Federation starship operated by Starfleet in the late 24 th century.

In 2370, Petty Officer First Class Liliana Walton was assigned to the Thunderchild to train specifically for the Peregrine-class in its role as a courier ship and small transport. It was here that she attained Chief Petty Officer. She ended up surviving the Battle of Sector 001 aboard the ship, staying on it through the outbreak of the Dominion War .

In 2371 Victor vanVinter was posted to the USS Thunderchild initially serving as the Head of Spaceframe and Structure following his posting to Starbase 2. Victor served on the Thunderchild through 2377 eventually working his way up to Deck Chief in charger of maintenance of the embarked fighter squadrons. Present during the Battle of sector 001 in 2372 where his face was disfigured and had an eye replaced with a cybernetic as a result. During his tenure on the Thunderchild, he showed his skills as a competent and skilled Senior NCO and began training in earnest on all craft he was in charge of amassing most of his flight hours while aboard.

The Thunderchild was the first posting of David Grayson after his graduation from Starfleet Academy in 2372. Ensign Grayson served aboard the Thunderchild for two years as an armory officer before being reassigned to the USS Bellerophon .

Izar Bila took his cadet cruise aboard the Thunderchild in 2373, and earned a promotion to ensign thanks to his actions during the Battle of Sector 001 when a Borg cube attacked Earth . He served aboard the Thunderchild as a chemist in the Science Department for the next three years.

In 2374, Chief Petty Officer Liliana Walton left the Thunderchild to serve as one of the new flight instructors at what would become the Tactical CONN Academy Flight Range.

Thomas Ravon was assigned to the Thunderchild in 2374. This was in the middle of the Dominion War . Furthermore, the ship had just been through its encounter with the Borg in the Battle of Sector 001 in 2373, so the mark of war lay heavy on the minds of his new crew. During his time on the Thunderchild , Ravon got trained by pilots who knew what it was to fight against superior enemies. It was a lesson for him to learn that Federation fighters weren't invincible, unlike what the tutors at the Academy had said when they spoke of the current and future warp fighters in the fleet.

While serving aboard the Thunderchild , Ravon saw these new fighters as soon as they rolled out of the shipyards. Starting off with his Peregrine-class fighter, he soon flew the newly developed Mk I Valkyrie , and the year after, it was replaced by the Mk II iteration of the Valkyrie. Ravon learned to fly to his limits yet kept in mind that some fights could never be won, regardless how advanced the fighters became. Still being a bit secluded from his peers in the squadron, Thomas applied himself fully to help the deck hands and the Chief of the Deck on the Thunderchild with fighter maintenance and upkeep. Having grown quite familiar with all three different fighters he had flown during his time on the ship, and not having any aversion to getting his hands dirty, he was likely the most proficient fighter pilot on the Thunderchild when it came to repairing them.

During his time aboard the Thunderchild and participating in its battles, Ravon was commended for his service aboard the starship. Even medals came in the picture, yet Ravon respectfully declined them as he believed that the decorations and medals were a sour reminder of the losses the squadron had suffered. Regardless, in 2376 Ravon got promoted to Lieutenant after his time aboard the Thunderchild . He was then transferred to the USS Kusanagi .

In 2376, Izar Bila was promoted to lieutenant (junior grade) and transferred to the USS Asterion

Thunderchild Class

Built in the 2320's, the Thunderchild class was a cousin class of the Centaur. Intended to operate as a cruiser as well as a fast, long range scout, the class was based off the Centaur's basic design with additional weaponry. The class was designed to be agile and quick, but because of the additional weapons the class lacks in crew accommodations and science facilities.

thunderchild star trek

The hull form of the Centaur clearly shows the ship to be a contemporary of the Excelsior and Centaur generation. Her nacelles are to the sides and slightly smaller than the Centaur's, but of the same design. She is equipped with ten dual-mount phaser banks and eight torpedo tubes. Because of the lack of scientific abilities, only two of the class were ever built.

thunderchild star trek

The class prototype, USS Thunderchild was reported missing in 2345 while patrolling the Romulan Neutral Zone. No trace of the ship is ever found. While Starfleet expects the Romulans to be behind the missing ship, there's no evidence. The remaining ship of the class, the USS Savoy, is dry docked for a complete systems overhaul and spaceframe review. After six months, engineers deem the vessel space-worthy and fully functional, she is redeployed to the Alpha Quadrant. In 2369 an Akira class vessel was named USS Thunderchild in part to honor the missing ship and crew.

During the Dominion War, the USS Savoy operated with the Seventh Fleet during the first few months, she was one of only fourteen ships out of one hundred twelve to survive the attack on the Tyra system. After repairs, she was resigned to the Ninth Fleet. She took part in the battle to retake Deep Space Nine and the first battle of Chin'toka before being knocked out of action for several weeks. During the battle for Cardassia, the USS Savoy was destroyed while engaging a Dominion Battleship. A handful of her crew survived, and one of them made a now famous painting of the USS Savoy's final moments.

2316: Starfleet issues a general design brief for a heavily armed, fast cruiser. The general idea is for a modular starship based roughly on the Centaur class, that will augment the Excelsior Class starship. Project brief is submitted to Starfleet for the Thunderchild Class. After much discussion, permission for base designs are approved.

2317: Starfleet views the theoretical proposals for the Thunderchild and after deliberation, the primary design is approved and briefs for the propulsion, computer, weapons and spaceframe parameters are sent to Starfleet Design agencies for consultation.

2318: Propulsion Dynamic are approved and sent to the Utopia Planitia for in-depth study. M/ARA designs are finalized. Spaceframe Design progresses at projected rate.

2319: Spaceframe design is approved and full specifications are forwarded to Utopia Planitia for designations. USS Thunderchild production begins with a projected 6 year turnover for the Prototype ship. Emergency nacelle separation mechanism is approved, that will eject the nacelles and attached 'roll bars' allowing the Saucer section to escape disastrous situations.

2320: Design work on Warp Coils are approved. The Star Drive section begins construction. Saucer section nears 29% completion. Computers are delivered for fitting work. Work continues on habitat sections.

2321: Phaser banks, delivered. Warpcore delivered, three months late. Roll bars, nacelles, and their attached pylons near completion with final attachment of navigational deflector array. Saucer Section nears 81%.

2322: Bridge module attached to primary hull. By May, Computer cores are activated and ship functions begin to be transferred from Station Control to ship control.

2323: Computer system now operating at 76% of maximum. System expected to become self aware within three months. Final construction of ship complete. Antimatter regulation control is found to be within acceptable levels. Primary Magnetic containment found to be within expected parameters.

2324: Computer system fully self aware and umbilicals from the station are cut as the ship become self sufficient. Impulse systems pass Review Three and being autonomous low level power control. Secondary backup generators are shut down and become Auxiliary system control. USS Thunderchild leaves dry dock for primary testing.

2325: Warp stress coating is applied and USS Thunderchild begins deep space assessments. The Centaur performs above expectations.

USS Thunderchild returns to Utopia for final exterior markings and paint. On 23, December 2325 the USS Thunderchild is officially commissioned by Starfleet at Utopia Planitia during a brief ceremony. Bridge plaque is put in pride of place. USS Thunderchild is ordered to begin shakedown cruises estimate to last one year.

Akira side

Side elevation.

Starting out as just a hypothetical exercise in starship design, the design that became the Akira -class was initially conceived during a period of rising tensions with the Cardassian Union in the mid-24th century. Worked on by engineers in their spare time, most never expected the vessel to be used, much less built, and as such the Akira project was assigned a relatively low status on the priority list. That changed following Starfleet’s disastrous losses to the Borg in the Battle of Wolf 359 , as Starfleet began a major program of research, development and starship construction to meet any future Borg threat.

The prototype ship USS Akira was launched in 2368 , and fairly soon the class went on to become a major player in the fleet. Performing admirably during the wind-down of the Federation-Cardassian War in the late-2360s, and against the Borg on their return to Federation space in the 2370s , the Akira -class also was a common sight during the later Dominion War , serving on the front lines in most of the war's major battles. ( ST reference : Starship Spotter ; The Official Starships Collection Issue 12: "USS Thunderchild NCC-63549")

Shuttlebay, Akira-class

Forward shuttlebay of the USS Thunderchild .

The Akira class was heavily armed with fifteen torpedo launchers , capable of firing either photon or quantum torpedoes , as well as tricobalt devices . ( ST video game : Starship Creator )

The weapons pod could also be converted to carry specialized scientific sensors for exploration and research missions. ( The Official Starships Collection Issue 12: "USS Thunderchild NCC-63549")

However, one of the ship's defining features was its large main shuttlebay . One of the largest such facilities on any Federation vessel, the Akira' s shuttlebay encompassed almost a third of the ship's saucer section , allowing the Akira -class to act as a fighter carrier as well as a cruiser. Its complement of forty fighters exit through the forward shuttlebay doors and returned through one of two aft bays. ( ST reference : Starship Spotter )

The Akira -class vessel Thunderchild had a team of Starfleet fighter pilots. ( DS9 - Millennium novel : The Fall of Terok Nor )

The large complement of shuttles also allowed the Akira -class to act as a rescue ship for evacuation missions, especially in situations where transporters didn't work or weren't suitable. ( The Official Starships Collection Issue 12: "USS Thunderchild NCC-63549")

The Akira -class heavy cruisers were equipped with Type-X phasers , Mk 80 torpedo launchers , and LF-35 linear warp engines . These starships were designed to operate for 18 years without a major overhaul and refit. ( Decipher RPG module : Starships )

The Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual stated that this class had two torpedo launchers, although all other references that cover Akira -class weaponry agree that there are 15 tubes. It could be theorized that the contradiction is caused by a comparison of launcher machinery to actual launch points, but no further data regarding this detail is available.

Given some portions of the blocks of text on different ships are identical, it could have been an editing error.

The ebook The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon , published by Last Unicorn Games after they had lost their Star Trek license listed two other Akira -class starships: USS Avenger (NCC-69925) and the USS Martel (NCC-73196). The manual also features registries for some of the ships mentioned in other LUG supplements, although those ships were assigned different registries by later Decipher supplements.

History [ ]

Starships of this class were constructed at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards by 2371 . ( VOY : " Relativity ")

It quickly became a common fixture in Federation fleet deployments, appearing on the front lines of numerous engagements, including against the Borg at the Battle of Sector 001 in 2373 , and in the Dominion War , where several vessels of this class were assigned to Starfleet's Second Fleet , which participated in Operation Return in 2374 , the second Battle of Chin'toka , and the Battle of Cardassia in 2375 . They were also frequently stationed near Deep Space 9 during the war. ( Star Trek: First Contact ; DS9 : " Favor the Bold ", " Sacrifice of Angels ", " Statistical Probabilities ", " The Magnificent Ferengi ", " Afterimage ", and more)

An additional noted engagement happened in 2374 , where an Akira -class, and two Defiant -class escorts successfully engaged three Romulan D'deridex class -class warbirds after Tal Shiar agents hijacked and stole the Prometheus -class prototype USS Prometheus , and tried to take the ship back to Romulan space for study. The Akira -class, in conjunction with the Prometheus , and the Defiant -class escorts, destroyed one of the warbirds. ( VOY : " Message in a Bottle ")

At least one member of the class was within a light year of Earth in 2378 . ( VOY : " Endgame ")

Akira class model

Freeman's shelf model

Admiral Alonzo Freeman kept a model of an Akira -class starship in his ready room in 2381 . ( LD : " First First Contact ")

In 2384 , at least 8 ships of this class intercepted the USS Protostar in a restricted sector near the star Gamma Serpentis . They were part of an armada which included Centaur -type , Defiant -class , and Sovereign -class starships. ( PRO : " Mindwalk ", " Supernova, Part 1 ", " Supernova, Part 2 ")

In 2401 , four ships of this class were sent by Starfleet to join an armada opposing a unknown Borg vessel . The Borg liaison sent to the USS Stargazer briefly commandeered this vessel and others, before the crew managed to engage their auto-destruct system. ( PIC : " The Star Gazer ")

Later that year, eighteen ships of this class participated in Frontier Day celebrations near Sol Station . Along with the rest of the fleet, these ships were seized by the Borg Collective after their younger crews were assimilated by a Borg signal transmitted via Jack Crusher . ( PIC : " Võx ", " The Last Generation ")

By 2402 , at least two ships of the class, the USS Sentinel , and the USS Wersching were retired from service, and placed on display at the Fleet Museum in orbit of Athan Prime . ( PIC : " Võx ", " The Last Generation ")

Technical data [ ]

Physical arrangement [ ].

Akira class destroyed by orbital weapon platform

Overview of design

The Akira -class design ditched Starfleet 's usual saucer-secondary hull-nacelle design, and more closely resembled the NX-class with its catamaran shaped hull. The engineering section was tucked under the main saucer, which housed the main deflector , and some of the ship's tactical systems. The nacelles were connected via long catamaran type structures, which in turn connected to a large weapons pod, housing several photon torpedo launchers. The catamaran pylons offered a degree of protection for the main bridge , which retained its traditional location at the top of the saucer. ( Star Trek: First Contact ; DS9 : " Call to Arms ", et al.)

Tactical systems [ ]

Akira class in neutral zone

An Akira -class firing forward phasers

The Akira -class design incorporated a multitude of tactical systems, including at least three phaser arrays , and housed numerous photon torpedo launchers along the port and starboard sides of the ventral primary hull, at least one launcher forward of the deflector, and several located on the aft weapons pod, which rotated into place before firing. ( Star Trek: First Contact ; LD : " Grounded "; PRO : " Supernova, Part 1 ")

Command and control systems [ ]

By 2401 , the computer systems on board the class had been overhauled to include the Fleet formation mode , also known as Starfleet emergency protocol NX12.11, designed to place all Federation starships within a fleet under the automated control of the Starfleet mainframe. ( PIC : " Võx ")

Background information [ ]

The name of the ship class was never mentioned on screen, but is derived from production sources.

The total number of Akira -class vessels present at Frontier Day was established by Picard Research Assistant Jörg Hillebrand . [1]

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia  (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 14), the Akira -class was named after the anime fantasy film Akira . " Along with the Lockheed P-38 Lightning , the Akira -class starship helped to inspire Doug Drexler 's design of the NX-class Enterprise from Star Trek: Enterprise . "

According to designer, Alex Jaeger , " This was my gunship/battlecruiser/aircraft carrier. It has 15 torpedo launchers and two shuttlebays – one in front, with three doors, and one in the back. I really got into it with this one, with the whole idea that the front bay would be the launching bay, and then to return they'd come into the back, because they'd be protected by the rest of the ship. " ( Star Trek: The Magazine , July 1999 , Issue 3)

A design sketch of the USS Akira shown the vessel bearing the registry NCC-2497. In an unpublished interview with author Larry Nemecek , designer Jaeger said he simply used the four-digit number of his then-phone extension for that registry; to conform to Starfleet practice, the number "6" was added by Mike Okuda and the film's art department to make "62497," a number then approved by producer Rick Berman . At the same time, Jaeger said, two other ship names and registries were approved as back-ups, if needed, to the USS Thunderchild actually seen on film as NCC-63549: the USS Rabin (named after former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin ) as NCC-63293, and the USS Spector (NCC-65549). The ship scale sheet showing the back-up names and registries can be found on John Eaves' blog .

The latter ship's name has appeared on screen in a graphic from the Star Trek: Picard episode " Vox ". The CGI file used for the Akira -class seen in the Voyager episode " Message in a Bottle " was ostensibly the Spector , and was used by the Star Trek Fact Files . The ship allegedly appeared in one of the battle scenes from the sixth and seventh seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , but this has not been verified.

The scale of the CGI mesh, according to a January 20, 1998 post in the newsgroup alt.tv.star-trek.ds9, by DS9 Visual Effects Supervisor David Stipes , was 860 feet or 262.13 meters, the length used when he blocked shots in DS9. [2] However, the measurement used by Visual Effects Supervisor Gary Hutzel , according to an in-house chart dated 5/15/98, was 840 feet. [3]

According to a size chart of Alex Jaeger, the Akira -class would be roughly 500 meters (1640.4 ft) in length. [4]

The Activision PC game Star Trek: Bridge Commander includes the USS Devore ( β ) (NCC-64088), USS Geronimo ( β ) (NCC-69302), and USS Kali ( β ).

The Activision PC game Star Trek: Armada includes the USS Jupiter ( β ) (NCC-71267) and USS Templar ( β ), as well as many others. In both this game and the sequel, Star Trek: Armada II , these vessels have an advanced weapon called the "chain reaction pulsar ( β )" which bounces a bolt of energy off of enemy shields, damaging several ships consecutively. The Jupiter was also a promotional card for the Star Trek Customizable Card Game , where it was listed as being "under the command of Captain Satelk ."

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Dominion Wars includes the USS Singh ( β ).

Star Trek: Away Team includes the USS Leyte Gulf ( β ) (NCC-71427).

The Akira -class is featured in the game Star Trek: Starfleet Command III , where it is classified as a heavy cruiser.

The Xbox 360/PC game Star Trek: Legacy allows control of Akira -class ships as cruisers with names such as USS Akira , USS Spector , USS Rabin , and USS Thunderchild .

The Akira -class is featured in Star Trek Online as the prototypical example of a "Strike Wing Escort", a class of tactical starship blending the weaponry an escort with the capacity to field smaller vessels such as shuttlecraft , runabouts , or attack fighters in combat. Other Strike Wing Escort classes fielded by Starfleet with designs derived from the Akira -class include the game-original Armitage ( β ) , Alita ( β ) , and Thunderchild ( β ) classes. The in-game model has been updated multiple times to improve its level of detail and make it more screen accurate, the most recent of which was used in Star Trek: Picard . In 2024, the game released a new mission depicting the Battle of Wolf 359 in a Holodeck simulation where players are embodying one of the 40 fleet vessels engaged against Locutus' Borg Cube . One Akira -class ship, the USS Kaneda , is depicted as one of the destroyed ships during the battle. Her registry number is NX-62498 which suggest it was a prototype years prior the initial launch of the USS Akira commission .
