Tour de France races on to Carcassonne despite 40°C heatwave

The Tour de France will race the full 205 kilometres from Rodez to Carcassonne on Sunday, despite forecasts of 38-40°C (100°F-104°F) temperatures for the southwest of France.

While professional cycling has an Extreme Weather Protocol and races have been cut or cancelled due to extreme conditions, the Tour de France peloton has accepted to racing through the heat wave.

The Cyclistes Professionnels Associés (CPA) riders association and their Tour de France representative Pascal Chanteur have been in contact with their riders, Tour de France organisers, UCI judges and team managers to find several solutions to help the riders.

The CPA confirmed that feeding will be allowed from the KM 0 until 10km from the finish. Riders can throw bidons to spectators without the risk of fines as long as it is done safely. The time limit has been extended to 20% of the stage time.

Race organisers had hoped to create water sprays along the stage to douse the riders but this was stopped due to water shortage rules in the area of the stage.

Local authorities are expected to try to cool the roads by spraying water on the surface in key points.

"On Sunday, the rise in temperatures continues, in particular in the South-West where values close to 40°C will often be reached," an official French weather warning said, with a third of the 101 French departments given an orange heat wave warning.

No red warnings [heat that causes adverse health effects] have yet been issued.

"It will be the same for everyone," Tadej Pogačar said of racing in the heat before the recent Alpine stages

"You just have to keep your body cool enough. I don't think anyone likes to race for five hours in the 40-degree [heat], I don't even think it's healthy for us."

Pogačar has taken to wearing an ice vest as he signs on and lines up before the stage starts. He also puts ice cubes down his socks before riding to the start and ice packs on his neck during the stages.

The Tour's final transition stages from the Alps to the Pyrénées via the Occitanie region will see the peloton ride into a heat wave rising across Europe from North Africa and Spain.

Fortunately for the riders, the worst of the heatwave could hit southwestern France during Monday's third rest day.

Temperatures are expected to fall to a more reasonable 32°C for Tuesday's 178.5km stage from Carcassonne to Foix in the foothills of the Pyrenees.

TdF Femmes Stage 6 Could Be the Calm before the Storm. Or the Stage That Changes Everything

With scattered thunderstorms threatening, Demi Vollering will push to reclaim the Yellow Jersey while Kasia Niewiadoma fights to hold onto her lead.

Just shy of a century ride, the hilly Stage 6 of the Tour de France Femmes is the last “easy” day the riders will have before they head into the mountains. With the huge shakeup in Stage 5 that moved Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime) from the Yellow Jersey position and put her in defense mode as Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon//SRAM) moved into the lead for the first time, Stage 6 is guaranteed to be exciting.

Here’s what you need to know before you tune in:

  • Date: Friday, August 16
  • Distance: 159.2
  • Start location: Remiremont
  • Finish location: Morteau
  • Weather: Scattered thunderstorms that could make for wet, sketchy roads

Stage 6: Remiremont > Morteau

159.2 km (99 mi) and 2,222 m (7,290 ft) of elevation.

course map of stage 6 of the 2024 tour de france femmes

How hard is Stage 6 of the Tour de France Femmes?

In a few words, it will be really hard… for some of the riders. Individual riders hoping to finish high in the GC rankings will be preserving as much energy as possible while still not losing time, making it a great day for breakaway attempts, but a bad day to be a domestique tasked with closing down said breakaway attempts. And Vollering will be gunning for a victory that will put her back in Yellow, so her SD Worx-Protime teammates will be working hard .

cycling tdf 2024 women stage4

Stage 6 is just under 100 miles in length, and while none of the climbs are overly challenging, there are two categorized climbs and nearly 15 miles of uphill in the final third of the race, so expect the lead group to get whittled down as riders fall off the pace.

There is one categorized sprint at the 100-kilometer mark, so expect riders like Charlotte Kool (dsm-Firmenich PostNL), Marianne Vos (Visma-Lease a Bike), and Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime)—the top contenders for the Green Sprinter’s Jersey —to hold on until at least that point in the race, especially since it’s the last stage before the mountains.

What will the weather be like for Stage 6, and how can it affect the race?

Rain showers in the morning will give way to scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. The high will be 76°F. Winds will be light and variable. The chance of rain is 50 percent.

Rain in the forecast could make for an interesting race, as we saw on the very slick Stage 4. Those riders who feel comfortable riding in wet conditions may go for the breakaway attempts, while other teams may focus on staying safe and keeping time gaps manageable for the next two stages.

Who can win Stage 6?

Hilly stages are great because they could just as easily end in a sprint finish with most of the peloton intact or can end up splintered apart into small groups. There’s always potential for a solo finish or a stunning sprint like we saw on Stage 4 when Puck Pieterse nipped past race leader Vollering and then second place in the GC Niewiadoma at the line.

We won’t be shocked about a breakaway with Vollering in the mix, though she may decide to save her watts for the mountains on Saturday and Sunday. With Kristen Faulkner (EF-Oatly-Cannondale) sitting high in the GC right now, we could also see her team pushing for that stage win for their gold medalist team leader.

And, of course, this race has been a young rider’s game, with Pieterse and Stage 5’s winner Blanka Vas (SD Worx-Protime) both capturing stage wins, so seeing that White Best Young Rider’s jersey towards the front won’t surprise any of us at this point.

How can Stage 6 affect the GC?

The hilly stages are where the sneaky time gaps can open! Right now, Vollering has lost serious time to Niewiadoma and has moved all the way down to ninth place in the GC. That means Vollering will be desperately trying to take back the lead or close that gap, but the confidence that comes from wearing the yellow jersey could make a difference to Niewiadoma.

Kasia Niewiadoma takes thrilling four-second win in the Tour de France Femmes

tour de france weather today

By Issy Ronald, CNN

(CNN) — Katarzyna ‘Kasia’ Niewiadoma won a thrilling edition of the Tour de France Femmes by just four seconds, holding off a blistering long-range attack on the final stage from defending champion Demi Vollering as the race was decided on the iconic Alpe d’Huez.

Niewiadoma began the day in the yellow jersey with a 1:13 buffer over Pauliena Rooijakkers, a renowned climber but more untested as a general classification racer, and 1:15 over Vollering, who has been one of the most dominant riders in recent years.

Vollering had attacked more than 40 kilometers (roughly 24.9 miles) from the finish on the steepest slopes of the Col du Glandon and, at one point, held a gap of 1:27 over Niewiadoma and the virtual race lead. The Dutchwoman won the stage, taking a 10 second time bonus with the victory, but Niewiadoma emptied herself on the upper slopes of the climb, sprinting home with just four seconds to spare.

Once the magnitude of her achievement set in, the Pole collapsed with her head in her hands and began crying with joy and exhaustion, emerging only to lift her bike into the sky. Meters away, Vollering slumped on the tarmac, similarly overcome with exhaustion and emotion but without the joy to temper it.

“It’s so crazy to be honest,” Niewiadoma told Eurosport afterwards. “The whole stage was such a crazy rollercoaster, like I had a really bad moment on Glandon. Then on the descent I was able to rebuild myself.

“Then on Alpe d’Huez, I just had to pace myself, give my best in the last five km. And to be honest, for a second, I lost faith that I could still do it. They were screaming so much down the radio in the last two km.”

Winning the Tour de France Femmes marks by far the biggest win of Niewiadoma’s career, and her first major stage race win for seven years. She first took the yellow jersey on stage 5 when previous race leader Vollering crashed six kilometers from the line.

A thrilling finish

Only Rooijakkers could match Vollering’s initial acceleration on Sunday, and she remained glued to her compatriot’s wheel except when she was dropped briefly on the descent, giving Vollering the virtual race lead.

With the race poised so evenly between the three riders, a thrilling chase ensued as Niewiadoma pursued Vollering and Rooijakkers up the mountain, with the seconds ticking back and forth, the sport’s biggest prize slipping through one rider’s grasp and then the other.

Niewiadoma’s group made inroads into the time gap on the flat between the two mountain passes, reducing it to about 40 seconds as the lead group hit the famous slopes of Alpe d’Huez.

But the leading duo displayed their strength on the climb, pushing the gap out to over a minute and it seemed increasingly likely that one of them would take the yellow jersey. As the kilometers ticked past, however, and the riders became more and more fatigued, Niewiadoma found an extra kick and began closing the time gap.

Vollering sprinted for the line, dropping Rooijakkers and taking the stage victory but just missing out on defending her overall title. She finished second in the general classification while Rooijakkers rounded out the podium in third.

Polish rider Kasia Niewiadoma did just enough in a thrilling battle with rival Demi Vollering on the iconic Alpe d'Huez to win the women's Tour de France by four seconds overall.

Vollering was part of a breakaway Sunday with fellow Dutch rider Pauliena Rooijakkers after the Col du Glandon. She accelerated powerfully in the final stretch to win the eighth and final stage.

But Niewiadoma finished fourth to narrowly clinch her first Tour title, with an overall time of 24 hours, 36 minutes, 7 seconds.

FedEx St. Jude Championship weather report: Final round forecast

Change Text Size

Update, Saturday, Aug. 17: A cold front will push through the area keeping things mainly dry during the early morning hours, with mostly sunny skies expected for the final round. Temperatures will remain hot with highs in the low 90s, but less humid air will begin to overspread the region during the afternoon making it feel more comfortable. It will become breezy with higher winds out of the NNW at 10-15 mph during the afternoon.

tour de france weather today

Update, Friday, Aug. 16: Due to possible thunderstorms in the forecast Saturday morning, approximate Round 3 starting times at the FedEx St. Jude Championship will be 9:45-11:45 a.m. CT off of Nos. 1 and 10 tees in groups of three. Hot and humid conditions seen on Thursday and Friday, which feel like temperatures reach as high as 112F, will continue into Saturday with high humidity causing a chance for scattered thunderstorms in the morning.

A hot week is shaping up at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the first of three FedExCup Playoffs events.

Temperatures are expected to reach the high 90s F throughout the week at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, with heat indexes that could surpass 105 F.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected for Wednesday's pro-am day, which could soften the course for Wednesday's first round, with precipitation also possible on each competition day. Although Wednesday could see .75 inches of rainfall, the total precipitation across Thursday-Sunday is not expected to surpass .5 inches.

The FedEx St. Jude Championship features a 70-player starting field, which offers more flexibility to overcome weather delays compared to a Full-Field Event. For context, last week's Wyndham Championship still crowned a champion Sunday evening despite the first round's postponement to Friday due to Tropical Storm Debby.

“Hot and humid conditions return Thursday into Friday with the humidity making it feel like 105+ each of these days,” wrote the TOUR’s official weather forecast. “Cannot rule out isolated thunderstorms during the afternoon with the peak heating of the day. Otherwise, a cold front is forecast to move through the region this weekend increasing the chance for thunderstorms Saturday into early Sunday. This will break the heat on Sunday with highs in the upper 80s and less humid conditions."

The top 50 on the FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List after the FedEx St. Jude Championship will advance to next week's BMW Championship and qualify for next season's eight Signature Events, with the Memphis heat complemented by high stakes.

Here's a look at the FedEx St. Jude Championship weather forecast as of Wednesday, Aug. 14.

Wednesday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, 80% chance of rain, tapering off mid-day. High 86 F. Low 73 F. Winds E to NE, 4-8 mph.

Thursday: Mostly sunny and hot, 20% chance of rain. High 97 F. Low 74 F. Winds S to SW, 5-10 mph. Heat index 107 F.

Friday: Afternoon thunderstorms and hot, 30% chance of rain. High 96 F. Low 75 F. Winds SW, 10-15 mph. Heat index 106 F.

Saturday: Thunderstorms possible and hot, 40% chance of rain. High 92 F. Low 75 F. Winds N to NW, 6-12 mph.

Sunday: Morning thunderstorms possible, 30% chance of rain. High 88 F. Low 72 F. Winds NW, 6-12 mph.
