8-Days Bike Adventure from/to Marrakech: Exploring the High Atlas Mountains and Draa Valley
Mountain Biking in the High Atlas
Mountain biking was a great adventure for us during our visit of Moroccco. It was an extremely terryfying and challenging. However, we had an amazing experience riding through amazing trails while enjoying the beauty of the Moroccan landscape. We explored the Berber villages and experienced their culture.I'm a foodie--so the best part was eating the delicious typical Berber food. As much as we were pretty tired, it was such an amazing biking experience from Trek In Morocco.

Day trip biking into the Atlas Mountains
In addition to our fantastic six-day cycling adventure in the Atlas Mountains with MTB Morocco, my family and I also had the opportunity to go on a day trip mountain biking experience with them during the same month. Once again, MTB Morocco impressed us with their professionalism, expertise, and commitment to providing an exceptional biking experience. Despite it being a day trip, MTB Morocco ensured that every moment was filled with excitement and adventure. The trail chosen for our ride was carefully selected, offering a diverse range of terrains and challenges. We pedaled through rugged trails, meandering through stunning landscapes that showcased the natural beauty of Morocco. The route provided the perfect balance of thrilling descents and invigorating climbs, making for an exhilarating and memorable ride. The guides at MTB Morocco were exceptional, as always. Their passion for mountain biking was evident in the way they led the group and shared their knowledge. They were attentive to everyone's needs and skill levels, ensuring that each participant felt comfortable and confident throughout the journey. Their expertise and guidance added an extra level of enjoyment to the experience, making it even more fulfilling. Once again, MTB Morocco's attention to detail and commitment to customer satisfaction shone through. The equipment provided was top-notch, with well-maintained mountain bikes that were suitable for the terrain. Safety gear was readily available, and the team made sure that we were properly equipped for the ride. Their seamless organization and excellent communication made the day trip hassle-free and allowed us to focus on the pure joy of mountain biking. The day trip with MTB Morocco provided us with a taste of adventure, even in a shorter timeframe. It allowed us to explore new trails, witness breathtaking views, and experience the thrill of mountain biking once again. Whether it was soaring down thrilling descents or conquering challenging uphill climbs, each moment on the trail was filled with exhilaration and a sense of accomplishment. In conclusion, our day trip mountain biking experience with MTB Morocco was nothing short of fantastic. Their commitment to delivering exceptional service, their knowledgeable guides, and their passion for the sport created a truly memorable adventure. Whether you're embarking on a longer cycling expedition or seeking a thrilling day trip, MTB Morocco is the perfect choice for an unforgettable mountain biking experience in Morocco.

We explored the Berber villages and experienced their culture.I'm a foodie--so the best part was eating the delicious typical Berber food. The trek was a fantastic experience all around. Before we even board the plane for Nepal, Santosh's excellent organization makes sure we are ready and equipped. Before the hike, he offers advice on the best gear and route to take. In case you forgot yours, Santosh also has some of these materials, which was helpful because I did forget a few items. The trip's expert guides and porters share a wealth of intriguing information about the mountain ranges. Additionally, the smaller groups compared to the bigger businesses make traveling simpler. We received a lot of rest and acclimatized well to the environment, which is why we weren't as sick in the mountains as other groups who experienced severe altitude sickness. Overall, I would like to go on another trek and would unquestionably suggest mountain climb treks and Santosh to all foreign tourists looking for a reputable local travel agency.

We wanted to craft our own mountain bike tours that reflected and fuelled our passion for experiencing the world on two wheels. Importantly, this meant they had to be developed with and led by expert local guides and embody the culture of each destination.

Gravel Bike Tours
Adventure unpaved.
Gravel bike tours by Trek Travel combine a mix of paved and gravel roads to let you explore some of our favorite regions in a whole new way. You’ll pedal in classic Trek Travel style, with gravel-specific Trek Checkpoint SLR 7 bikes that are built to conquer any surface with ease. And along the way you may just discover a new side of cycling, the world, and yourself. This isn’t just a vacation. It’s a tour of self-discovery — unpaved and unbelievable.
What You Can Expect on a Gravel Trip
What’s better than planning a vacation? Having someone else do it for you! Each gravel trip is five days long and features one or two hotels. Hotels are handpicked to be near great gravel riding and still provide all the amenities you are accustomed to on a Trek Travel vacation. Most hotels are Explorer level, but you’ll find a few Luxury hotels sprinkled in.
Most people choose to ride gravel to escape traffic and get off the beaten path. Our rides are intended to allow you to do just that. The amount of pavement varies from destination to destination, but one thing holds true, once you are on gravel, you’ll encounter minimal traffic. This goes hand in hand with fewer services, so you will be glad your Trek Travel guides are there to provide support
Each gravel trip is designated as Signature or Discover. In general, Signature trips include more and the price point reflects these additional inclusions. Our Discover trips feature Explorer hotels and have the same great rides and hospitality with fewer inclusions, allowing you to enjoy a cycling vacation at a great value.
Is a Gravel Trip Right for You?
Here is the list of indicators that will help you decide if a gravel bike tour is the best option for you.
You want a fully supported cycling vacation with amazing hotels and meals
Our Gravel trips, like our other Classic Guided trips, feature a mix of Explorer and Luxury hotels and the finest dining each region has to offer.
You look forward to getting off the beaten path
The allure of gravel is venturing into rural and remote areas so you can enjoy the quiet as you take in the scenery. Sometimes routes will weave through quaint towns while other times they will be more remote with services and amenities only near the beginning and end of the ride. Lunches will therefore range from cafes or casual roadside lunches during the rides or a late lunch back in town after the ride.
You have some experience riding gravel roads
If not, we suggest you go to your nearest Trek dealer to test ride a gravel bike on gravel roads and see what all the fuss is about. If you don’t live near gravel roads, singletrack mountain biking experience is a good substitute.
You are comfortable clipping into pedals
Riding on gravel can be bumpy so we recommend clipping in for safety and efficiency.
You are comfortable climbing, descending, and cornering on loose, uneven surfaces
We are equipping you with a gravel bike that is capable of handling a wide range of conditions. We are also equipping you with wide, tubeless tires with grippy tread so anyone with good bike handling skills and some experience riding gravel roads or singletrack will be able to handle level 1, 2, or 3 trips with ease. Level 4 trips, as you would expect, mean more technical riding and require more skills and experience. Review our Activity Levels for Gravel Tours more more details.
You’re in for the adventure, not a race
You understand that gravel riding is about three to four miles per hour slower than road riding, and therefore it takes more time and effort to cover the same distance. You aren’t focused on your average speed, you’re in it for the experience.

THE KOKOPELLI TRAIL
Grand junction to moab.
- Private Tours and Custom Tours Solos, Couples & Friends
- Departure: Grand Junction, CO
- Departs On: Monday
- Duration: 5 Days
- Lodging: First-Class Camping
- Fitness Level: 3-5
- Technical Level: 3-5
- Elevation Range: 4,000 - 9,000 ft.
The legend of Kokopelli begins near present day Grand Junction, Colorado (195-miles west of Denver), at the confluence of the Colorado and Gunnison rivers. Known in Native American cultures as a trickster god and/or a fertility deity, Kokopelli could shape-shift into numerous forms: most often, a swaybacked figure with a feathered head playing a flute.
Ranging westward on more than 142-miles of secluded trails and jeep roads, we follow Kokopelli’s walkabout, a supernatural quest to spread prosperity and fertility. If you’ve heard or read about the superb mountain biking near Fruita, Colorado (12-miles northwest of Grand Junction), here’s your chance to live and breathe it. Home-range of the Ute Tribe, final resting spot for “Doc” Holliday, quirky Fruita (pop. 12,000) celebrates its rodeo as much as dinosaurs; not to mention a headless chicken—named Mike—who lived for 18-months. Mike lives on though, honored with a yearly festival.
Hard by the Utah border, this region is known as Western Colorado’s Best. The riding here reflects a sharp fusion of both states: Utah’s Mars-evoking rocky desert given big-time lift by the Colorado Rockies. After a refreshing stop along the banks of the Colorado River, we climb into Utah’s Canyon Country. Like a fast moving survey party, we regard large iron and copper cliffs which loom overhead on the amazing Onion Creek ride. Pressing on, we ride from the 5000-ft desert floor past great sweeps of buttes and sandstone reefs higher into the snow-capped Manti La Sal Mountains. The payoff: hugging a fast, flowy ridgeline at 8500-ft, looming over endless rolling red desert. Our campsite is set atop scenic Porcupine Rim. Phenomenal.
On this classic bikepacking route, you can expect 14,000 vertical feet of climbing, all told. Our out-of-this-world journey culminates in Moab, given 24-pica, boldface punctuation by an exhilarating descent down Sand Flats Road!
Mixing moderate, and some longer ascents, along with two days of moderately challenging singletrack, the Kokopelli Trail is perfect for mountain bike riders in need of a challenge!
Day 1-2: Meet in Grand Junction. Ride singletrack and jeep track for two days along the Colorado River corridor. Day 3-4: Ride underneath Fisher Towers and up Onion Creek. Climb high into the La Sal Mountains to an alpine camp. Day 5: Descend along the Porcupine Rim back to Moab via Sand Flats Road. Return shuttle back to Grand Junction.

The food tastes better, the sky is certainly bigger, and your mind is clearer.
There is nothing better than rolling into camp to fresh made chips and salsa, homemade guacamole, and Dutch oven enchiladas. Then making your way to a sweet and inviting campfire, sharing your favorite anecdote or image from the day’s activities while marshmallows roast. Inside your tent: a sturdy raised cot, fluffy sleeping bag, and a plush full size pillow. Wow. You earned this. Sweet dreams.
We choose well-maintained public campgrounds with scenic vistas and comfortable arrangements. You’ll move seamlessly from one day of your trip to the next, camping outdoors and enjoying wildly healthy, delicious homemade meals.
The majority of our selected campgrounds feature indoor facilities and showers. Conversely, in more remote backcountry camping scenarios, we’ll provide portable toilets and private solar showers.
Camping gear may be rented or you may bring your own. All of our camping gear is tested and hand-chosen from top manufacturers to ensure you get a good night’s sleep. Our camp gear package includes a tent, sleeping pad, raised cot, sleeping bag, sleeping bag liner, full size pillow, and ground tarp.
While every Escape Adventure trip is designed to appeal to active adventure seekers, and in many cases, particular skill levels, there is always a different idea of what that exactly means. That is why we have designed the chart below to help make sure you join the proper tour. We know your pace may vary from one day to the next—and your traveling companions’ may differ as well. We present a range of mileage options on each tour as well as provide support vehicles as much as possible. That way you can take a break and do as little or as much as you would like each day.
Find out more about Choosing a Tour .

The Best Food
Our food isn’t just good, it’s good for you.
Food is a big part of the Escape Adventures experience. Our guides prepare all of your meals on our camping trips. Expect three delicious meals a day consisting entirely of freshly prepared foods. These include fresh organic fruits and vegetables as well as meats. We also have energy snacks aboard our support vehicles. Don’t be surprised if your guides purchase fresh fruits and healthy snacks throughout the day while you are out riding. They may just show up on the trail with a local treat! Many of our guests are vegans or vegetarians, whom we are more than happy to accommodate. If you have special diet requirements or limitations, just let us know when you sign-up and we’ll work with you to meet your needs.

This Cyclist Bike Tours Whenever and Wherever She Can—and Brings Her Family Along for the Ride
“I can’t imagine my life without cycling—it has been a source of inspiration to lead a creative, unusual life.”
Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. How we test gear.
I first got serious about cycling in 1980 when I was dating Keith Morical—in 2020, he set a Guinness World Record for biking the 48 contiguous states in a month. At the time, he was into touring and we went on a three-day bikepacking trip . I was hooked.
Keith and I didn’t last, but my love of bike touring has never ended. I did several other local unsupported tours, got a new touring bike, and then a job at a bike shop in Chicago. I bike-commuted to work there even in the winter.
In 1986, armed with the latest in bike-touring equipment (Eclipse panniers!) I convinced my fiancée that our honeymoon should be eight months of biking and camping through Europe . Then, in 1991, we biked through Italy, riding from Rome to Florence and back.
Back in Chicago, I had a really good off-road bike (a Klein) and did one race, winning my category despite doing a header into a stream. Then a month later, I was pregnant and gave up racing but kept cycling.
Despite having little ones and limited resources, my husband and I kept squeezing in small tours—a weekend here, a five-day trip there. We just added a burley cart, a trail-a-bike, bike seats, and kids bikes to our equipment. In 2008, we took our 15- and 8-year-old on a three-week bike trip in Italy.
When the kids were grown, and I was working full-time as a potter at 59, I realized I was out of shape. My husband I were spending some winter months in Merida, Mexico, and started exploring the region on bikes. During that time, I also began to slowly regain my fitness and stamina over several years.
Upon turning 60 in 2019, my goal was to ride 60 miles in one day—which I did during a four-day bike trip! However, in 2020, I found out that I had an aortic aneurysm and the doctor thought I might need open-heart surgery. I needed to keep my blood pressure down, and so I buckled down on diet and exercise and at my last check-up in 2023, my heart looked really healthy and the aneurysm had not gotten any worse, so it was not necessary to operate.
In 2023, my husband and I traveled to Italy for two months to ride and had a wonderful experience. After that we did a few more bikepacking trips—I love the self-reliance, freedom, challenge, and being outdoors all day. Plus, I am fortunate that my husband and bike-partner is so supportive and willing to go on this journey with me.
I currently cycle first thing in the morning when I’m in Merida. My bike in Merida is a 24” wheel women’s bike but I take it on rocks, gravel , shopping, city riding, long distance , and just for whatever I need. Back in Minnesota, I try to bike three to four times a week.
Physically, I am sure I would be grossly overweight by now if I didn’t cycle. I’ve fought that all my life, but I’ve come to realize that I have almost always been fit because of my habit and love of cycling. I’m proud that I brought up both my children to be good cyclists.
Emotionally, cycling has always been a source of deep happiness for me. I can’t imagine my life without cycling—it has been a source of inspiration to lead a creative, unusual life.
These tips have made my cycling journey a success:
1. get a comfortable bike fit and seat.
I’m 5’3 and when I started biking , I couldn’t find a frame that was small enough. Recently, I bought a 51cm XS Giant. The fit made a huge difference in my comfort and power.
2. Build riding into any and everything you do
Traveling? Bring, rent, or borrow a bike, even if it’s just for a day. Groceries, commuting, meeting for coffee? Get good bags and save the gas money. Add a biking element to any trip! When I do art fairs in other cities, I bring along a bike. In 2016, I did a bike-share in Paris to get around. In 2020, we rented bikes several times in Italy. It’s a wonderful way to see any place.
3. Get your children riding with you
Keep it fun for the kids . They’ll thank you later. If it feels unsafe, get a bike rack, drive to a bike trail, and bring treats for after. You are building their health and the next generation of cyclists. Teach them good habits and safety.
4. Be adaptable as you age
As health gets more fragile, don’t give up! Adapt how you exercise and be creative with it. Do whatever it takes to keep going—maybe that’s reducing mileage or getting a different kind of bike. Set realistic goals and even then, be flexible with those, but don’t give up.
Glynnis’s Must-Have Gear

30 Years of Turner Bicycles (2024 Sea Otter)
We caught up with David Turner to discuss the past, present, and future of mountain bike technology and took a look at a fresh titanium fork and two brand-new bike models Turner Bicycles launched at this year’s Sea Otter Classic. “Come for the titanium fork and stay for the beautiful dropouts.” Find it all here…
Early last Friday morning, I rounded a corner in a relatively quiet section of the Sea Otter expo and found Turner Cycles set up in a humble tent with five or six bikes. I was a little surprised to see that all of them were made of titanium, four of which were fully rigid, and only two equipped with short-travel 120mm suspension forks. There were absolutely zero full-sussers to be found. Anyone familiar with the Turner brand, particularly those who’ve been out of the loop for the last few years, likely would have had the same reaction.
When I (re)started mountain biking back in 2006, Turner made top-tier, highly coveted full-suspension dream bikes. They were always slightly out of reach for me, alongside Ellsworth and a couple of other boutique brands. The Turner story is a long one, and many twists and turns led to the titanium bikes David Turner and co. had on display at Sea Otter, including two brand-new models. Read on for details on those bikes and more.
In the grand scheme of mountain bike technology, David Turner has been through it all. Turner started racing mountain bikes in the sport’s heyday. As a professional racer in the late 1980s and early ’90s, he collaborated with designers at RockShox, Mongoose, and AMP Research, adding significant contributions to the advancement of front and rear mountain bike suspension design. Following his retirement from full-time competition, he worked with Mongoose and suspension guru Horst Leitner, creating some of the most influential lightweight rear suspension frame designs of the era. In 1992, Turner started designing his own bicycles, and by 1994, he had a production run of 150 aluminum frames built in the USA by Ventana. This flagship model eventually earned the name Turner Burner, a title that stuck around and saw many iterations over the years. The original Burner had 2.75” inches of rear travel.
Turner Suspension Bicycles Inc. carried on as a premium full-suspension mountain bike company for well over a decade. When I first took notice of the brand around 2006, Turner was at the top of the game in that world, making bikes that most of us could only drool over in catalogs. But somewhere along the line, the brand seemed to vanish into obscurity. What exactly happened, and how did Turner reenter my radar with titanium frames?
Part of the answer lies in how the mountain bike industry evolved over the last decade. Everything essentially sped up. Wheel sizes fell in and out of favor, geometry shifted, materials changed, and more/larger brands entered the arena. Whether these shifts were market-driven or marketing-driven is a different conversation. Either way, to keep up with trends, costs, and the big players, Turner began producing carbon frames in 2012, entering a relatively short phase in the company’s history that ended in 2016. David referred to this period as “dark times” that he’s still trying to forget.
In summary, the financial investment into prototyping, tooling, and molds, which could cost upwards of $150,000 per bike, and the 18-24 month lead times, weren’t sustainable for Turner. When customers and market trends called for longer, lower, or slacker, Turner had to start from scratch, and the old tooling and mold costs were tossed into the ever-burning furnace of capitalism. As he told Mountain Bike Action in a 2021 interview , “Trying to plan that far in advance with an ever-changing market was challenging to say the least.”
In 2019, Turner completely pivoted away from suspension (pun intended), shifted to titanium, and began working with a factory in Taiwan to bring his new vision to light. David described the rationale behind this shift simply, “The beauty of metal is the ability to adjust for changes.” That year, Turner Bicycles relaunched with two new bikes, the ARTi, an all-road bike, and the Cyclosys gravel platform. In 2021, they launched the Nitrous, a trail hardtail, and this year, they released two new models and teased two upcoming forks.
Turner Titanium Forks
When I first started writing this piece, I kind of wanted the title to be something like Come for the Ti Fork and Stay for the Dropouts, but that ran a little long. That is precisely what I did, though. There was a beautiful titanium fork lying on a table that caught my eye and first drew me into the Turner Bicycles tent.
David told me it’s a gravel fork that’s well on its way to production. It has a 395mm axle-to-crown height, a 50mm offset, three-pack mounts on each leg, dynamo wire routing, and threaded rack mounts integrated into the dropouts.
Turner is also working on a longer 510mm axle-to-crown version for the Nitrous, GILA, and VENN (the VENN I shot was running a prototype; see below), which are all designed around a 120mm suspension fork. But I digress. The rear dropouts on all of the Turner bikes caught my attention next; I started ogling those after I finished fondling the Ti fork.
Turner Bicycles VENN
The brand-new VENN launched at Sea Otter is first bike I noticed. It was packed with a set of Revelate bags in the corner, but the first thing that caught my eye was actually the drive-side sliding dropout. To put the cart before the horse, this 3D-printed part is pretty special. In fact, David said that it’s built specifically with single speeding in my mind. Music to my ears. It’s engineered it as a three-sided box to ensure precise alignment for those using a belt. That design also resists twisting forces, as he wanted to create a rock-solid connection at either end of the drivetrain. The other thing that makes it unique is that it offers 25mm of axle travel, which allows you to change the sprocket a tooth or two without needing to cut/swap the chain/belt. Added benefits to having the longer adjustment is tire size compensation and ride feel experimentation.
Adding to that, the VENN also has a 3D-printed full yoke. Again, this was largely engineered for stable drivetrain alignment, particularly when used with a belt drive. David mentioned that these two parts would probably be impossible, or at least financially crippling, if they were CNC machined. “Since I am trying to offer as much technology and finer details on my designs at a reasonable price, 3DP is allowing me to create specific shapes without hours and hours of CNC or tooling costs that are very expensive.”
Now, about the Venn. David described it to me as an ATB, which fits its name—taken from a diagram of overlapping circles that show the logical relation between different things. It’s a multi-use bike. Comparing it to other Turner hardtails, it’s a bit shorter and has a 1° steeper head tube and 1° slacker seat tube than the Nitrous and new GILA. He said it can be set up with a drop bar and short stem or a flat bar with a modest-length stem. It was made with bikepacking in mind and is equipped with quite a few bosses and rack and fender mounts on the frame. As for tire clearance, it can fit up to a 29 x 3.0” tire.
VENN isn’t on the website quite yet, but David told me it will be for sale in a week or so.
Flashback Nitrous
The Turner titanium Nitrous was named after a full-suspension bike that was in Turner’s lineup from 2005-07. That particular model was considered an XC race bike at the time, hence the speedy name. However, the current titanium Nitrous looks to have a little more versatility. It’s kind of a downcountry-style hardtail at heart, built around 120mm of travel, a 66° head tube angle, and a 74.5° seat tube. That said, it also has a relatively tall stack, medium reach, and a size-specific chainstay length ranging from 435 to 445mm. For 2024, it got a 3D-printed chainstay 1/2 yoke that provides clearance for 2.6″ tires and room for a 38t round chainring. Turner also made custom 3D-printed cable routing ports designed to make it easier to run the internal control lines. Other features include UDH-compatible dropouts and a UDH, “so any derailleur from the last four decades can be installed.”
The Nitrous “flashback” build shown here was the work of Rich Wessels, a longtime bike industry guy. Rich approached David asking if he could create a Nitrous for Sea Otter, and David gave him the go-ahead. David added, “In his mind, it was what the bitchin’ bikes of our childhood looked like. Growing up in a mountain bike house, Rich’s dad and his friends were mountain bike riders, so Rich was able to see what was hot when he was a little guy. Flash colors and titanium were the pinnacle a couple of decades ago!”
Turner Bicycles GILA
The new GILA that was released at Sea Otter is very close to the Nitrous, so much so that I didn’t shoot it. I actually thought it was another Nitrous. However, it sounded quite compelling when I learned the differences. In summary, it has the same custom sliding dropout as the VENN, a split seat stay for a belt drive, and a bit longer top tube and reach for, as David put it, “all the standing when smashing it up the mountain in singlespeed mode!” Also, in order to keep the drivetrain in perfect alignment, something critical to using a belt drive, it has a full 3D-printed lower yoke to stiffen the connection between the bottom bracket and rear axle. In contrast, the Nitrous has a half yoke but keeps the full left side chainstay for lower weight and what David considers a more “racy” design.
When I asked David what he thought the future of mountain bike tech holds and what he hopes for, he responded with the sentiment that all the big jumps in innovation have been made, many of which are now a decade or more old, but, “Like any mature market segment, we are now in the battle of refinement. Splitting the growing number of segments (DH, Enduro, Shredpacking, Trail, Bikepacking, downcountry, XC, gravel, touring, etc, etc) into smaller ones, and of course, continuing to refine each. Big picture for me? Improved gear boxes would be nice. Less weight and more belt-drive bikes for longer life in the dirt. Drivetrains are expensive, and budget drivetrains don’t last, so if we have to pay top dollar for them, it would be nice if they’d last a very long time.”
For more on several models mentioned here, head over to TurnerBikes.com , and stay tuned, as the VENN and GILA will be added to the website soon.

Hosting the Winter Olympics in 1964 — and again in 1976 when Denver backed out after originally securing the games — transformed Innsbruck into a superstar for snow and ice sports.
It’s still a great place to downhill and snowboard, ski touring through the backcountry, fly off the end of the colossal ski jump, attempting a figure skating spin on a local ice rink or — if you dare — flying off the legendary Bergisel (“Ice Mountain”) ski jump.
But over the past few decades, the Austrian city has emerged as a summer fun capital too, one of the best places in Europe for hiking, biking, climbing, river sports, and even motorized off-roading.
Here are a few ways to get your adrenaline pumping this summer in and around Innsbruck.

Hike To Your Heart’s Content
Those who want to hike Innsbruck are confronted with a huge problem. Not the altitude or the steepness of some paths, but deciding exactly which trail you’re going to follow. The choice is mind blowing.
The popular AllTrails hiking app describes and maps 55 trails in and around Innsbruck and more than 400 walking routes in the surrounding region.
A great way to start is riding the double Nordkette cable cars to the summit of Hafelekar mountain (a.k.a. the “Top of Innsbruck”), where a short walk from the top station leads to panoramic views of the Inn Valley and the Austrian Alps, with southern Germany and northern Italy in the hazy distance.

From there you can continue along the Goetheweg trail along the crest of the Nordkette range to the Pfeishütte mountain hut, a roundtrip of roughly 8.4 miles (13.5 km).
The Goetheweg forms a small part of three far more challenging hiking routes that you can hop onto from Innsbruck: the new Karwendel High Trail (43 miles/70 km) through the Alpine wilderness north of Innsbruck and the epic Europe E4 hiking path that runs more than 7,500 miles (12,090 km) from southern Spain all the way through the Alps and the Balkans to Greece.
The iconic walk south of the Inn Valley is the 70-mile (120-km) Stubai Hohenweg trek through the Alps between Innsbruck and the Italian border.

Design Your Own Tour de Alps
Whether you’re a leisurely biker or an adventurous cyclist, Innsbruck offers two-wheel choices for just about everyone.
Regular and e-bike rentals for road and off-road cycling are available at numerous outlets in and around the city. Routes range from flat, easy bike paths on both sides of the River Inn in the city center to marathon Innradweg road cycling route that meanders 320 miles (520 km) through the Alps.
Once the snow melts, Bikepark Innsbruck takes over the Muttereralm snow sports area on the valley’s south side. The park features seven forest and mountain trails, a pump track and dual slalom course, a special area for kids and beginners, and access to a 13-mile (21-km) long-distance mountain biking route to three Alpine huts with food and drink.
Innsbruck’s public transport and cable cars convey cycles and the many biker friendly hotels provide secure storage and bike washing areas. The city also hosts the Crankworx gravity-fueled mountain bike festival in June, an event that attracts top riders from around the globe.

Alpine Mountain Highs
Avid peak baggers use Innsbruck as their basecamp for conquering the many Alpine summits that bookend the city on north and south. Among the region’s 90 multi-pitch routes is the intimidating and often snow-topped Hohe Munde (“High Mouth”), a gigantic peak that towers 8,733 feet (2,662 meters) above the Inn Valley.
More than two dozen sports climbing areas include cliffsides pitches besides the River Inn and precipitous rock faces near the middle Nordkette cable car station. Veterans and beginners can perfect their technique at four indoor climbing centers that operate year-round.
In addition, there are 10 do-it-yourself Via Ferrata routes in the Innsbruck region — high-altitude routes that include permanent steel ladders and cables to assist climbers.

Après Sweat
Post hiking, biking and climbing, Innsbruck offers a lot of cool spots to refresh and refuel.
A half-hour hike through the woods from the bottom Nordkette cable car station, Umbrueggler Alm mountain hut restaurant complements its panoramic views with hearty Austrian dishes like wiener schnitzel and frittatensuppe (pancake soup) on a sun-splashed outdoor patio.
Down in the old town, drink in the awesome views and the craft libations at the 360° Bar, a spectacular glass-enclosed café/lounge on the roof of the RathausGalerien on Maria-Theresien-Straße. The prosecco and Lillet blends are especially tasty.
For a slice of history, dine at the Weisses Röessl (“White Stallion”), founded around 600 years ago and the only remaining of four restaurants that once graced the old town’s Vier-Viecher-Eck (Four Beasts Corner). Many of the dishes are also oldies-but-goodies: schöps pfannenbratl (lamb stew), hauspfandl (pork medallions with spaetzle noodles), and Tiroler ghröstl (roast potatoes with a fried egg and bacon cabbage salad).
If you’re staying two or more nights in Innsbruck between May 1 st and October 31 st consider investing in a Welcome Card , which includes free public transportation in the city and region, 24 hours of free rental bike, free guided hiking and e-bike tours, and discounts on many activities and attractions.

A Comprehensive Guide to the 2024 Giro d’Italia
[table-of-contents] stripped
It’s late April, which means it’s almost time for one of the sport’s hardest races in one of the world’s most beautiful locations: the Giro d’Italia , the first of pro cycling’s trifecta of three-week “grand tours.” While not as prestigious as the Tour de France , the Tour of Italy is considered by many to be the hardest grand tour of the season, a race known for its challenging terrain, stunning scenery, and the iconic maglia rosa , the “pink jersey” that’s awarded each day to the leader of the Giro’s General Classification.
Here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 Giro d’Italia:
Dates: Saturday, May 4 - Sunday, May 26
How to Watch
If you’re a Max subscriber ($9.99/month), then you have access to the streaming platform’s B/R Sports package, which is the only legal way to stream the Giro d’Italia in the USA. For now, the package is free to all regular Max subscribers, but at some point, it will cost an additional $9.99 each month. That’s not as affordable as GCN+ used to be, but considering everything else you get with the B/R Sports package (such as MLB, NHL, NBA, NCAA Men’s March Madness, U.S. Soccer, and 24 Hours of Le Mans coverage) it’s a pretty good deal.
Max has a user-friendly app for smartphones, streaming devices, game consoles, and smart TVs. There’s also an easy-to-navigate website, which is a helpful option for streaming the race from work. (Don’t worry, we won’t tell your boss.)
You could cancel your monthly subscription at the end of the race, but remember that Max will be offering live streams of many road, mountain, track, and cyclocross races throughout the rest of the year. If that floats your boat, consider getting an annual subscription for $99.99 (or $149.99 for ad-free streaming).
The 107th edition of the Giro d’Italia covers 3,386.7K (2,138 miles) over 21 stages, with two individual time trials, seven stages with uphill finishes, and six to eight stages expected to end with field sprints.
This year’s Grande Partenza takes place in Piemonte, near the French-Italian Alps, with two challenging road stages that will force the Giro’s GC contenders to be at their best right away. Stage 1, a 136K stage from Venaria Reale to Torino, features three categorized climbs–including the Superga and the Colle Maddalena–but it’s a short, punchy, uncategorized ascent just before the finish that could determine the stage winner.
Stage 2 begins in San Francesco al Campo and ends after 150K with this year’s first summit finish–on the Category 1 Santuario di Oropa, the climb on which deceased Italian legend Marco Pantani took one of his most famous stage wins in 1999. By the end of the first weekend, the GC battle will already be in full swing.
The race then begins working its way south, and Stages 3, 4, and 5—which finish in Fossano, Andora, and Lucca, respectively—should be days for the Giro’s sprinters. (Although the finishes of Stages 3 and 4 feature ramps inside the final 10K that could thwart the fast men.) Stage 6 brings the race from the coast into Tuscany (it finishes in Rapolano Terme) and features 12K of the strade bianche (“white gravel roads”) that give March’s Strade Bianche road race its name. If there’s one stage during the first week that has the potential to cause a few surprises, it’s this one.
Stage 7 is the first individual time trial of the Giro, and it’s a tough one: beginning in Foligno, the 37.2K race against the clock starts with over 30K of flat roads. But there’s a nasty sting in the course’s tail: a 6.5K climb to the finish line that starts steep and then ascends more gradually to the line. Riders who don’t pace themselves on the flat part of the course could explode on the final climb. There could be large time gaps here.
Starting in Spoleto, Stage 8 brings the second summit finish of the first week–on the Category 1 Prati di Tivo, a 14K climb in the Umbrian Apennines with an average gradient of 7%. With a field sprint expected in Napoli at the end of Sunday’s Stage 9 (after a 214K stage that starts in Avezzano), Stages 7 and 8 will determine which rider will wear the maglia rosa into the Giro’s first Rest Day.
The second week begins in Pompeii with Stage 10, a 142K stage that features a summit finish on a new climb, the Category 1 Bocca della Selva, a 20.9K climb with a deceiving 4.6% average gradient. The first few kilometers are actually downhill, so the climb is actually harder than its statistics suggest.
We expect Stage 11 (207K) to end with a field sprint in Francavilla al Mare, and Stage 12—with a jagged 190K stage through the Marche region (an area known for its muri or “walls”)—looks like the perfect day for a breakaway filled with puncheurs and riders who perform well in the spring classics. Friday’s Stage 13 is the flattest stage of this year’s race, which is probably a good thing considering the next two stages. This 179K stage from Riccione to Cento will be an active rest day for much of the peloton.
And they’ll need one because the third weekend begins with Stage 14–the Giro’s second individual time trial–a generally flat, 31K course from Castiglione delle Stiviere to Desenzano del Garda. This is a day for the Giro’s time trial specialists; the pure climbers will struggle to stay within shouting distance of their more powerful colleagues.
But they’ll have a chance for revenge on Sunday, when the race heads into the Alps for Stage 15, a 220K monster stage (the longest in this year’s race) with five categorized climbs, including back-to-back 2000m summits (both Category 1 ascents) at the end of the day, with a summit finish at the Mottolino ski resort just above Livigno. This weekend should blow the Giro wide open, leaving just a handful of riders still in contention to win the race overall.
The third week begins the same way the second week ends, with a 200K, high-altitude mountain stage. Stage 16 features the granddaddy of them all: the Stelvio, this year’s “Cima Coppi” as the highest summit in the race. Topping out at over 2700m, the climb comes early in the stage but will nonetheless offer a rude awakening to a peloton that’s coming out of the second Rest Day. After a long ride down into and through a valley, the day ends with the Category 1 Passo Pinei and then a summit finish on the Category 2 Monte Pana, in Santa Cristina in Val Gardena.
At “just” 159K, Stage 17 is much shorter than the previous two mountain stages, but it’s jammed with five categorized climbs, including the Category 2 Passo Sella and the Category 1 Passo Rolle. The day ends with two ascents of the Category 1 Passo Brocon, which the riders climb for a second time on their way to the finish line. This will be an intense stage, and it could pose a challenge for the team defending the pink jersey to control. The riders will be either climbing or descending from start to finish and if someone’s going to stage a third-week ambush, it could come here.
The next two stages offer a break from the mountains. Stage 18 brings a 166K downhill ride from Fiera di Primiero to Padua that should end with a field sprint. Stage 19 looks like the perfect chance for a small group of opportunists–who have likely been saving themselves in the high mountains–to escape and fight for a breakaway stage win in Sappada.
The 154K stage begins in Mortegliano and climbs steadily throughout the day, culminating with three categorized climbs in the second half stage, the last of which the riders summit just 7K from the finish. After so many days of intense climbing–and with one more day in the mountains still to come–the peloton could just sit back and let the break go all the way to the finish.
That sets the stage for Stage 20, the last chance for anyone hoping to steal the 2024 Giro d’Italia from whoever's been leading it. And–as the last two editions have shown us–that’s a realistic possibility. Starting in Alpago, the stage rolls along for about 85K before the first of two ascents of the Monte Grappa, an 18K climb with an average gradient of 8.1%–that’s steep . This isn’t a stage with a summit finish–the race finishes in Bassano del Grappa after a long descent from the top of the Monte Grappa down into the valley below–but even without one, the stage should still provide a dramatic conclusion to the Giro’s GC battle.
The race concludes Sunday in Rome with a 122K road stage featuring several circuits through the Eternal City. The day will begin with clinking glasses of prosecco, and end with one last chance for the sprinters to grab some glory.
You can find the elevation profiles and course maps for each 2024 Giro d’Italia stage here .
What Happened Last Year
For the second year in a row, the 2023 Giro d’Italia was decided on the grand tour’s penultimate day. In 2022, Australia’s Jai Hindley (BORA-hansgrohe) took the pink jersey from Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz (INEOS Grenadiers) on Stage 20. Hindley won a mountain stage at the end of the grand tour’s first week, then hung around near the top of the General Classification before seizing his moment late in the Giro’s final mountain stage and winning the race overall.
In 2023, Slovenia’s Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) followed the same formula, albeit without an early-stage win. After Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step)—who had won two stages and was wearing the pink jersey as the Giro’s overall leader—was forced to abandon the race after testing positive for Covid-19 on the eve of the Giro’s first Rest Day, Great Britain’s Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) took the maglia rosa . With the exception of the two days straddling the second Rest Day, Thomas held the jersey for much of the second and third weeks.
But he cracked on Stage 20, an 18.6K uphill time trial from Tarvisio to the summit of the Monte Lussari. Roglič, who entered the day just 26 seconds behind Thomas on GC, won the stage by 40 seconds, taking the pink jersey–and the 2023 Giro–by a slim margin.
Thomas held on to finish second, and Portugal’s João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) finished third. Italy’s Jonathan Milan (Bahrain-Victorious) won the Points Classification, France’s Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) won the King of the Mountains Classification, and Almeida was the Giro’s Best Young Rider.
Riders to Watch
Tadej pogačar (uae team emirates).
With most of the sport’s best grand tour riders (including Roglič) racing the Tour de France this summer, this year’s Giro has a short list of overall contenders, a list that’s headlined by one of the sport’s true superstars: Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates).
The 25-year-old has never raced the Giro, and he takes the starting line this year as the favorite to win and dominate it. Then he’s planning to head to the Tour, where he’s hoping to become the first rider since Italy’s Marco Pantani in 1998 to win the Giro and the Tour in the same season.
Geraint Thomas (INEOS-Grenadiers)
Pogačar’s biggest challenger will likely be Geraint Thomas, who’s coming back to the Giro after last year’s disappointment. The 37-year-old (he’ll turn 38 during the race) will have a strong and experienced team supporting him–and the course suits him–but he’ll have a hard time overcoming Pogačar.
Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease a Bike)
We’ll also be keeping an eye on Belgium’s Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease a Bike), who made headlines last December when it was announced that he was breaking his contract with BORA-hansgrohe (who had recently signed Roglič away from Jumbo) to join the Dutch superteam.
The winner of the Tour de l‘Avenir in 2022, Uijtdebroeks just turned 21 and is widely considered to be a future grand tour contender. Without Belgium’s Wout van Aert, who’s skipping the Giro due to injuries he sustained in a crash at a race in Belgium a few weeks ago, Uijtdebroeks becomes the focus of the team’s Giro plans. And with a strong squad alongside him, he could finish on the podium and is the easy pick to become the Giro’s Best Young Rider.
Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale)
Other GC contenders include Australia’s Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), a former fourth-place finisher at the Tour de France and Giro stage-winner; Italy’s Damiano Caruso (Bahrain-Victorious), a former Giro podium-finisher; Colombia’s Daniel Martinez (BORA-hansgrohe), a former fifth-place finisher at the Giro; Great Britain’s Hugh Carthy (EF Education-EasyPost), a two-time top-10 finisher; and France’s Romain Bardet (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), a former Tour de France podium finisher who was seventh at the Giro in 2021 but might be more of stage hunter this year.
Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek)
Other stage hunters include Italy’s Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek), a three-time stage winner who was the Giro’s King of the Mountains in 2019; France’s Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step), who’s riding his first Giro; and Canada’s Michael Woods (Israel-PremierTech), who’s hoping to complete a hat-trick of grand tour stage victories with a win in Italy.
Nairo Quintana (Movistar)
One of the most controversial riders in this year’s Giro will be Colombia’s Nairo Quintana (Movistar), winner of the Giro in 2014. But the 34-year-old hasn’t raced since finishing sixth overall in the 2022 Tour de France and then having his results disqualified after testing positive for tramadol, a painkiller that’s banned by the UCI (but not banned by WADA). He’s now back in the WorldTour with the team that made him famous. His return has not been a popular one , though, and it will be interesting to see how he’s received in Italy.
The Giro also offers several stage win opportunities for field sprinters, and that–plus the fact that the Tour de France is very not sprinter-friendly–means there will be lots of them taking the start, including Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek); Belgium’s Tim Merlier (Soudal–Quick Step); Dutch sprinters Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Fabio Jakobsen (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), and Australia’s Sam Welsford (BORA-Hansgrohe), Caleb Ewan (Jayco AlUla) and Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck); and Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty).
Last but not least, the Giro will see several North Americans taking the start, with Americans Larry Warbasse (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Magnus Sheffield (INEOS Grenadiers), and Will Barta (Movistar) joining Woods on the starting line, with more expected to join them as teams finalize their rosters.
