My Chemical Romance Reveal Opening Acts for Rescheduled 2022 Reunion Tour Dates

They'll finally get a chance to "carry on" as My Chemical Romance 's pandemic-delayed reunion tour is finally happening stateside. The band just revealed the full rescheduled itinerary for North America after having to continually push back the shows due to COVID-19's impact on the touring industry.

The tour will now officially get underway Aug. 20 in Oklahoma City, with dates running through Oct. 29 which is the final scheduled night of the When We Were Young festival in Las Vegas. The group has also added 14 new shows in 10 cities to the itinerary. See all cities, dates and venues listed below. Tickets for the new dates will go on sale this Friday (March 11) at 12N local time.

In addition, My Chemical Romance have filled the run with a variety of opening acts, including the reunited Midtown, Badflower, Turnstile, Taking Back Sunday, The Bouncing Souls, Thursday, Kimya Dawson, Meg Myers, Devil Master, Dilly Dally, Ghosh, Nothing, Shannon and the Clams, Soul Glo, Surfbort, The Homeless Gospel Choir, The Lemon Twigs, Waterparks and Youth Code all playing select dates.

My Chemical Romance announced their plans to reunite in the fall of 2019, though the seeds of a potential reunion were planted as far back as 2017.  "In 2017, we got in a room together to see what would happen," MCR wrote on Twitter in December of 2019 . "A couple more jam sessions and 39 days of rehearsals later, we’re ready to show you what we’ve learned. See you soon."

The band played their first reunion show at the Shrine Expo Concert Hall in Los Angeles on Dec. 20, 2019, reportedly grossing nearly $1.5 million for the band. The group then started announcing more and more tour dates for 2020, but the pandemic wiped out those plans.

The group will play in the U.K. and Europe this May and June, before focusing on the U.S. this fall. See all of their scheduled dates and get ticketing info here .

Call them pop-punk, post-hardcore, or alternative rock, but lead singer and founder Gerard Way would rather you never call them “emo.”

My Chemical Romance is arguably one of the most influential bands of the early 2000s, garnering a gigantic loyal fanbase over the years who do everything from following their tours to supporting their causes in public demonstrations.

When the native New Jersey band disbanded back in 2013, followers believed it was the end of an era, but that proved untrue with a powerhouse reunion in 2019. And now, the long wait for more dates is over as Way, along with his brother Mikey and bandmates Ray Toro and Frank Iero are back with a vengeance.

My Chemical Romance started as the brainchild of lead singer Gerard Way. In the aftermath of the 9/11 attack, the vocalist was inspired to write about the event and start a band with guitarist Toro, his brother Mikey on bass, Iero on rhythm guitar, and original drummer Matt Pelissier.

My Chemical Romance released its first album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, in 2002. While it wasn’t a major hit, it used the music to cultivate a fan base following via MySpace. These efforts plus solid touring performances led the band to sign with Reprise Records in 2003.

In 2004, MCR’s second studio album, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, climbed to a respectable position on the Billboard charts, peaking at #28, and went platinum within the year. Pelissier departed soon after the record’s release, so Bob Bryar took over behind the drum kit.

Over the next two years, My Chemical Romance opened for bands like Green Day on the American Idiot Tour and Fall Out Boy on the Warped Tour. With a robust following, the band was ready to amp things up.

In 2007, the band released its magnum opus concept album, The Black Parade. This rock opera centers around a central character dying of cancer. The band staged powerful events like a hosting live gig using a pseudonym that almost resulted in the audience revolting and a releasing faux parade of black-robed marchers.

Not only did The Black Parade solidify My Chemical Romance’s burgeoning cult following, it was a huge commercial success. The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard charts and went on to go triple platinum in both the US and UK.

Mistreated and misunderstood by some media outlets, Gerard Way and his band had to overcome controversies generated by misinterpretation of MCR’s lyrics. After releasing their fourth album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, in 2010, the band would release a series of singles over the next two years compiled as the Conventional Weapons album.

Then, almost without warning, My Chemical Romance amicably broke up. But by 2019, a surprise show in LA signaled a reunion tour. COVID-19 postponed it in 2020, but now the boys are back and ready to take the world by storm.

Live reviews

My Chemical Romance, may their music never stop you! After their glorious years of being a band, they never have put on a bad show. With others envious of their success, their rocky vibe still manages to say everything in their lyrics.

As only a start-out band in the early 00's, they have blasted their way through all the others, just by their unique and heartfelt music. They are not just a talented, creative and inspiring foursome, but they all put their all into their spectacular performances on stage, whether it be small cramped venues, or huge overpacked arenas. My Chemical Romance are definitely the band everyone's heard of and alot of upcoming bands look up to. They jam pack their performances with energy, emotion and true passion. As popular songs such as the heart aching 'Helena' to the powerful 'Famous Last Words', there is always an element of surprise that this band will put into their set. Frontman 'Gerard Way' sure can get the crowd on their feet and having the best night of their life. However, as they are no longer a group they will certainly be an inspiration to many. My Chemical Romance is done, but it can never die.

Concerts are usually full of talent and fun. From my experience they have been amazing and a night you'll always remember. But after seeing My Chemical Romance, I finally realised how mind-blowing and inspiring festivals can really be. From the music to the laser show, the big screens to the loud speakers, everything was perfect.

MCR have always been true performers they either perform epically or not at all. And trust me they really knew how to entertain. I have always turned to music as a way out of reality, a tool used to set me free and it felt like they knew how to make me forget about the struggles and just have an amazing time. I was in complete awe, just watching my idols perform and seeing how powerful their words and music could be. They owned the stage. They owned the crowd.

I won't ever forget Gerad Way's hilarious dance moves to 'I Don't Love You' or when 'Frank Iero' guitar string came off mid song. I have some great memories due to that concert and I'm sure no matter how many other performers I see or concerts I attend, nothing will compare to the perfection of MCR.

My Chemical Romance is a classic punk band. My obsession started when I was 11. I loved the Black Parade and everything the band stood for. Their music never fails to amaze me. The lyrics helped me through some tough years and it breaks my heart that they broke up. I'm pretty sure that no matter your walk of life, MCR knew how to touch you.

Wow.. yeah. MCR was my favorite in early high school, seeing them after the craze was a great experience. Gerard still holds up with his great stage proformances and boy oh boy is Frank hot. Got to hear some of my favorite ever songs live and will forever remember this concert.

My Chemical Romance Plot First North American Tour in Nine Years

By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

My Chemical Romance will tour North America for the first time in nine years this fall.

The reunion run launches September 9th at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit and continues through the next month, wrapping October 11th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. My Chemical Romance announced the tour with an eerie short film titled “A summoning…” that features music from band members Ray Toro and James Muhoberac. The clip follows a young boy (played by Marcos Garcia) with an interest in the paranormal and the dark arts, who tries to outrun a trio of masked figures, with many of the scenes seemingly corresponding to different eras in My Chemical Romance history.

Tickets for all dates will go on sale this Friday, January 31st at 12 p.m. local time on Ticketmaster.com . Complete information is available on the band’s website .

Rolling Stone ’s Suzy Exposito wrote of the show , “[I]t’s with this landmark concert that MCR ceases to be a nostalgic act, and proves its mettle as a timeless, rock & roll band for the ages.”

Prior to their North American tour, My Chemical Romance will play a string of international concerts this spring and summer in Australia, New Zealand, the U.K., and Europe.

My Chemical Romance

My Chemical Romance finally kicked off their reunion tour on Saturday night (August 20) at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma after nearly 3 years of COVID-related postponements and from the sounds of it the show was well worth the wait. With singer Gerard Way rocking Heath Ledger-style Joker facepaint, the band launched into their second phase with their comeback single, “The Foundations of Decay,” before playing the 2004 Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge b-side “Bury Me in Black” for the first time since 2003.

According to Consequence of Sound , the super high-energy show included impressive drumming from new touring member Jarrod Alexander, whose kit was emblazoned with the appropriately grim MCR slogan message “BIG DEATH ENERGY.” The set also included another rarely played song, “This Is the Best Day Ever,” which appeared on their 2002 album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love , a track they haven’t played in more than 15 years.

The band’s first full tour since breaking up in 2013 was otherwise packed with plenty of crowd-pleasing emo ragers and fan favorites, including “Give ‘Em Hell, Kid,” “Teenagers,” “Bulletproof Heart,” “DESTROYA,” “Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)” and “The Ghost of You,” which Way dedicated to a recently deceased friend and producer Doug McKean as the crowd lit up their cell phone flashlights.

Operatic screamer Way also reportedly discussed some recent vocal issues that required a visit to a vocal coach and said he was anxious about how he would sound on the road. “My point us, thank you so f—ing much,” he said. “Let’s f—ing shut this place down!” And thus the band dove into a set-closing rush that included “Welcome to the Black Parade,” “Mama,” “Boy Division,” “Our Lady of Sorrows,” “Famous Last Words” and “Sleep” before returning for an encore of “Vampire Money” and their titanic 2004 single “I’m Not Kay (I Promise).”

After a one-off reunion show in Los Angeles in Dec. 2019, MCR announced a tour that was slated to kick off in 2020, but which was postponed repeatedly due to the pandemic. They finally hit the road in May with shows in Europe with their next show slated to hit Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on Tuesday (August 23).

My Chemical Romance, Reunited and It Feels So Bruised

Back on the road after more than a decade, emo’s most theatrical outfit let its songs and fans provide the drama as it revisited its anthems about fearlessness and individuality.

tour my chemical romance

By Jon Caramanica

In 2006, My Chemical Romance — by then, an edgy screamo band turned ostentatious pop-punk dramatists — released “The Black Parade,” a flashy and theatrical opus that established the group as art-house emo sophisticates. It maintained some of the scabrousness of its earlier albums, and smeared big-tent pop ambition atop it: “The Wall” for the “TRL” era.

On Saturday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, while performing “Welcome to the Black Parade,” a caffeinated march that’s one of that album’s signature songs, the band’s frontman Gerard Way saw the crowd pumping fists in the air, and encouraged it to go even harder.

“C’mon, I’m 45 doing this,” he said — a little tart, a little bemused, maybe a little fatigued.

The passage of time is an inevitable subtext of all reunion tours. This show, the first of four arena shows in the New York area, was part of the group’s first proper tour in a decade. (Its last studio album, “Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys,” came out in 2010.) In that time, emo has gone through its second or third revival, Way’s comic book The Umbrella Academy has become a Netflix hit and something about the My Chemical Romance mythos has deepened and hardened — it is now a misfit beacon.

Everyone is older now, and reality sometimes weighs down memory. At this show, that played out as a tug of war between been-there-done-that fatigue and we-survived-this-together triumph, with triumph ultimately triumphing.

The band started tentatively, lading the show’s first half with late career singles that felt much like conventional rock songs — “The Only Hope for Me Is You,” “Boy Division.” It was almost as if this rigorously flamboyant band was somehow shy about its own hits.

“Let me put on my sunglasses so I can look like an authority figure,” Way said, after a dry half-hour of bits and bobs. What followed was exuberant, rowdy, winningly messy: the chipper swing of the wry “Teenagers” giving way to the frenzy of “Welcome to the Black Parade.” “Mama” brought the Nutcracker to the mosh pit. “Helena,” perhaps the band’s most memorable song, was part victory march, part plea.

These epic anthems about fearlessness, rebellion and individuality were bracing. But the tension between the show’s two halves exposed a light quirk about this band, which is that often what set it apart from its peers was its sense of performance and its willingness to be ambitious while its actual music remained more conventional.

That accessibility is what allowed My Chemical Romance — Way; his brother, Mikey, who plays bass; the guitarists Ray Toro and Frank Iero — to survive long enough to thrive once more. They play with confidence, if not always warmth. (It was Mikey’s 42nd birthday, and some speakers onstage were adorned with drawings made by his children; most of the band wore T-shirts celebrating him.)

In front of trompe l’oeil installations of demolished buildings, the group was musically robust — Toro delivered taut chaos, and the touring drummer Jarrod Alexander was blistering, closing out the heart-rending anthem “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” with sensitive aggression and then shifting right into the punchier intro of “House of Wolves.” There were occasional flickers of rockabilly, ska, even death metal. Way is a lauded wailer, but his growl is just as potent.

At times throughout the show, Way appeared lightly cautious, never quite oversinging, even on the songs that demand abandon. He wore a camouflage jacket and a T-shirt featuring a smiley face with a bullet hole in its head, blood dripping down the cheerful yellow visage, and toward the end of the night, he put on a tight clear mask that had echoes of Patrick Bateman.

It was a manque version of the hypertheatricality that elevated the band out of scene notoriety to pop ubiquity. Late in the show, Way described a conversation he’d had about how to navigate a comeback tour after so many years, and the tension between performing for oneself and performing for the crowd.

“Maybe for a time it was for me,” he conceded.

But not now. “It’s not about the ego,” he said.

And yet. “Sometimes it’s about that,” he continued. “That’s a really delicate way of telling you I’m going to control you right now.” Everyone pumped their fists in unison.

My Chemical Romance performs at Barclays Center in Brooklyn Sunday night, and at Prudential Center in Newark on Sept. 20 and 21. The tour continues in North America through Oct. 29.
