Grammy award-winning Attacca Quartet, as described by The Nation, “lives in the present aesthetically, without rejecting the virtues of the musical past”, and it is this dexterity to glide from the music of the 18th through to the 21st century repertoire that place them as one of the most versatile and outstanding ensembles of the moment – a quartet for modern times. “…a surprisingly powerful experience” THE STRAD Passionate advocates of contemporary repertoire, their latest recording, Orange, features string quartet works by Pulitzer-prize winning composer Caroline Shaw. Greatly received by the critics, Attacca Quartet won the 2020 Grammy award in the category “Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance” in recognition for their work on this album. Previous recordings include three critically acclaimed albums with Azica Records, including a disc of Michael Ippolito’s string quartets, and the complete works for string quartet by John Adams.

Touring extensively in the United States, recent and upcoming highlights include Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concerts, New York Philharmonic’s Nightcap series, Lincoln Center’s White Lights Festival and Miller Theatre, both with Caroline Shaw, Phillips Collection, Chamber Music Austin, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, and Trinity Church at Wall Street where they will perform the complete cycle of the Beethoven String Quartets. Attacca Quartet has also served as Juilliard’s Graduate Resident String Quartet, the Quartet in Residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Ensemble-in-Residence at the School of Music at Texas State University. This is the biography of Patrick Watson (based on things he told me.)

Once there was a boy named Patrick Watson who was born on a military base in the Mojave Desert. His father rode around in planes carrying bombs, waiting for a command to drop them that never came. He was the baby in a family of five, which would include a future figure skater, an engineer and an air force pilot, but he was seven years younger than his next older sibling. The trouble with being born this late into a family is they have all already gone mad, and they are engaged in domestic dramas, chasing each other around with knives. He was left to make too many assumptions about love and life on his own, and he still has the philosophy of a wise beyond their years wide-eyed child.

The family moved to Hudson Quebec when Patrick was four. He was asked by an old gentleman by the name of Frank Cobatt to sing in the church choir. Perhaps they met in the cough drop section of the local grocery store. And Patrick sang in the church and his little boy’s pretty, melancholic voice broke everyone’s heart. And the choir director had him sing at the foot of a grave at a funeral. Because there is something in his voice that captures all the lovely things in life we can only hold onto temporarily and how their transience is what makes them wonderful. Patrick started playing piano when he was a child, of course. The piano used to belong to a boy named Gordon. The boy would appear as a ghost and teach Patrick how to play in the middle of the night. Even if Patrick played at three in the morning, his mother never interrupted these vital lessons. He showed me the photo of Gordon who looked, more or less, like a terrifying psychopath with tuberculosis who probably slit his whole family’s throats while they were sleeping. But I did not say so.

Patrick says he became a singer by accident. He thought he would compose scores for others to play, which seems like an odd thing to say because he is so clearly sprinkled with the pixie dust that causes a person to be transfixing on stage. And it’s now hard to imagine Montreal without the soundtrack of his songs. But he met the artist Brigitte Henry who was taking surreal underwater photographs of people in their clothes to make a book. This seemed like very important business to Patrick, so he made music for her exhibition. They performed the show at the porno movie theatre Cinema L’Amour. It was sold out. Brigitte Henry still designs some of his album covers, including this one. Patrick likes to hang on to people. He met his first guitar player Simon Angell playing guitar on the small streets of Hudson. In his first jazz class at college he walked in and Robbie Kuster and Mishka Stein were both sitting there. It was as though they were all waiting for each other. They would play together for the next twenty years. While they were working on his first album, the band lived in an abandoned church. They were kicked out for ringing the church bells when homeless people came in to be married, waking all the neighbours up in the middle of the night, in a misguided attempt to let them know love existed.

They opened up for James Brown where they learned to manage a large crowd. Every day before a concert James Brown and his team would hold hands and pray the show would be amazing. This taught the band that being on stage is a humbling honor and a music show is where people come to have a mystical experience. In the end, it was not so different than when he sang in church as a boy.

While writing this new album, the drummer Robbie left, Patrick and his partner separated, and his mother passed away. Much of this album is about having a wave knock you over when you realize that everything you have in life can be wiped away in a moment. He brought a notebook underneath the waves and composed tunes about melancholy while listening to the lonely hymns of mermaids. And the songs are about how sometimes you have to sing a love song to yourself when no one else will. Melody Noir is about writing a song to the hole inside us all.

Some of the songs, including Turn out the Lights and Look at You, are about falling in love again and learning how to be intimate in a new way. And how surprising it is that, although life can change, it can turn out to be better in so many ways than you could ever have imagined. And, ultimately, the album is about rebuilding your life from scratch.

The songs are marked by the idiosyncratic personalities of each of his band members. Mishka Stein grew up in the Ukraine where he wore little suits and accidentally set his building on fire, but he did a brave job helping the firemen put it out. A sweet Soviet latchkey boy, he spent much of his time watching Russian cartoons. The influence of the absurd anthemic melodies of those cartoons can be felt in the songs, particularly Look at You and Melody Noir.

Joe Grass, who has been playing guitar and pedal steel since Loves Songs for Robots, is a jackknife of sounds. He always creates a distinctive voice within the band’s particular brand of music. Evan Tighe landed magically at the perfect moment to take up the drums. The band was very lucky to find such a great drummer in time.

Patrick also worked with Leonard Cohen on one of his last songs before the legend passed away. This had a profound influence on the way he writes lyrics and the possibilities of poetry in song. The collaboration influenced his vocal delivery to be more dry, to have less notes and to simply deliver the words.

The beginning artist’s craft is so intuitive and odd, drawing from a trunk of recipes for happiness and hope. They begin with an idea that the world is good and things and love will work out. The mature artist creates from a place of melancholy and understanding of foibles and accepting a story that has already been written. It’s the difference between singing a solo at a stranger’s grave as a child and singing one at your own mother’s funeral.

It’s the same magical and sweet Patrick Watson on this album, but each of the feelings are deeper and dive down to stranger places, where even happiness seems impossible to bear. So the album moves from a dark place of loss to one of hope and magic and new love. The way you thought life was going to work out, but never does. Then it sometimes turns out to be more beautiful and surprising once it is broken.

Rory McIlroy finding his smile in New Orleans may be exactly what he needed to kick-start his game

Mcilroy is now one of 12 golfers with 25 pga tour victories and four major championships to his name.

In a sport that has become obsessed with shiny new objects, it is still historical achievement that rings the most true and authentic. Especially when a historical signpost is reached at the conclusion of a week fueled by nothing but beignets and joy.

Rory McIlroy on Sunday in New Orleans joined an exclusive club of golfers after concluding a team event that seemed to infuse him with a tremendous amount of delight. The names in that club are basically a who's who of players that have made their mark on the PGA Tour since World War II.

His victory alongside Shane Lowry at the 2024 Zurich Classic bumped McIlroy into the group of a now-dozen golfers who have won at least 25 times on the PGA Tour with at least four major championships to their name. 

You know most of them by a single name.

This club is based on an arbitrary set of figures, of course, but it nevertheless helps push into focus that McIlroy is one of the best golfers in the history of the PGA Tour.

That would have been true had he and Lowry lost to Martin Trainer & Chad Ramey in their playoff at TPC Louisiana, but the numbers look nice, and this group of golfers -- as a contingent -- is unassailable.

McIlroy was awesome all week. He is often at his best when playing for something bigger than himself; the PGA Tour's honor and a Ryder Cup trophy come to mind. He also seems to thrive in team environments.

His relationship with longtime buddy Lowry was the primary focus as they hit up all the great New Orleans eateries and seemed to enjoy playing 72 (or 73) holes together as much as they enjoyed actually winning the tournament. This is the type of environment in which the No. 2 player in the world -- who often carried the team -- thrives.

"The reason that Shane and I both started to play golf is because we thought it was fun at some stage in our life,"said McIlroy, who was reminiscing on their friendship, which extends beyond the beginning of both of their professional careers. "I think sort of re-injecting a little bit of that fun back into it in a week like this week, it can always help."

The fun feeds the hunger, and the circle is contagious.

"But I think also to play the sort of golf we did coming down the stretch when there was a little bit of pressure, I think that'll stand to us, also," he added. "But yeah, I've always felt like I play my best golf when I'm enjoying myself, and hard to not enjoy yourself when you're out there walking the fairways with Shane."

The enjoyment continued in the aftermath of the win as McIlroy sang a karaoke rendition of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" at a party marking a week that began with a boozy post-Ryder Cup lunch in which they decided to play this team event together. And then they went and won it.

Whether McIlroy can bottle that joy and use it to fuel his play for the rest of 2024 could greatly affect the future clubs he joins. This 25-4 club is special, no doubt, but it starts to get less crowded as players continue up that ladder.

Up next? There's the 30-5 club and the 40-6 club. Those rooms are sparse.

McIlroy will turn 35 years old in a few weeks, and he wins about two PGA Tour events per year. Give him between five and eight more prime years, and it's not unreasonable to believe he can reach something close to 40 PGA Tour victories. The more pressing matter, of course, is the majors; he has not claimed one since 2014, though he's had 10 top-five finishes in that span.

The PGA Championship returns to Valahalla in three weeks, which is incidentally the site of McIlroy's last major in August 2014. A decade is a long time, but McIlroy has arguably played the best golf of his career over the last two years.

While that has not continued at the start of 2024, perhaps coming out of a win in which he was able to get out of his own head will fuel him over the latter two-thirds of the season.

That's the hope for somebody who, even if he never wins again on the PGA Tour, will go down as one of the best to ever do it. 

"Hopefully, we can both kick on now," Lowry said. "We've got three majors left. Hopefully, we can get one each or maybe two and one.

"That would be nice," McIlroy said.

"That's the plan for the rest of the summer," Lowry added.

Brittany Mahomes Reflects on ‘Epic’ Charity Gala with Husband Patrick, Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift

Brittany and Patrick Mahomes had an “epic” double date in Las Vegas as they celebrated their charity’s work.

On Saturday, April 27, the couple attended the 15 and the Mahomies Foundation Golf Classic gala at the Bellagio Hotel, where they were joined by Patrick’s teammate Travis Kelce and his girlfriend Taylor Swift , among other current and former athletes who support the children’s charity.

Brittany, 28, shared a carousel of photos from the night with her husband, 28, writing on Instagram, “Last night was Epic😍✨.”

Brittany, who shares daughter Sterling, 3, and son Bronze, 1 , with the quarterback, thanked everyone who supports the charity in the caption. “If you were there, THANK YOU! We could not do this without all of our communities we are apart of and all the people that choose to support @15andmahomies 🙏🏻❤️.”

Patrick also posted a highlights reel of the charity event on his own Instagram, calling it "a great weekend." Brittany replied with a series of clapping hands emojis.

For the gala, Brittany wore a figure-hugging pastel yellow dress with cutouts at her sternum and her décolletage that was adorned with two flowers, while her husband, who started the charity in 2019, wore a blue plaid suit jacket and pants with a white button-down top.

Along with the Mahomes’, Kelce, 34, and Swift, 34, golfer Tony Finau, UFC fighter Khalil Rountree Jr., and former NFL players Andrew Whitworth and Kyle Rudolph were among the stars in attendance at the gala, where the pop star made a huge donation to fundraise for the 15 and the Mahomies Foundation.

In a video posted by the night’s auctioneer Harry Santa-Olalla on his Instagram Stories and in a clip shared on TikTok , Kelce took to the stage during the gala to auction off some very special tickets.

“I was just talking to my significant other, and we might have one other auction item that wasn’t on the docket,” Kelce said in the video, before asking guests, “Has anyone heard of the Eras Tour?” 

In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) from the gala, Swift, who was seated beside Patrick and Brittany, waved what appeared to be a red napkin from her seat as Kelce and Santa-Olalla began auctioning off her concert tickets. 

“Who would actually pay hundreds of thousands just to know that Taylor Swift is actually cheering you on as you're winning 4 of her tickets?” the auctioneer asked the excited crowd in the video. “This is insane! Let's go!”

The set of four tickets — valid for any of Swift’s upcoming U.S. tour dates — were eventually sold for a $80,000, Santa-Olalla shared in a caption of an Instagram post about the gala.

Later in the night, Kelce and Patrick got in on the fun, too, as they signed footballs and the quarterback started throwing them at Kelce, who caught them easily with one hand.

Saturday night’s event came following another fun night out for the couples, who enjoyed a date night together at Easy's Cocktail Lounge inside the ARIA Resort & Casino on April 26, PEOPLE previously confirmed.

Patrick Fishburn and Zac Blair have known each other since they were youngsters in Utah and they both said, with smiles, that not a whole lot has changed.

Through 54 holes at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, they're in a prime position for a big thing to change come Sunday night -- they could become PGA TOUR winners.

Fishburn and Blair fired a 12-under 60 at TPC Louisiana in the third round to take a one-shot lead into the final round.

They opened with a 7-under 29 in their first nine holes, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 second. They added back-to-back birdies on Nos. 10 and 11, and then three straight on Nos. 13-15.

The duo had a great chance to tie -- or break -- the Four-ball scoring record held by Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele (59, shot in 2022) but made pars on their final three holes.

But it's hard to be disappointed with a 60, they said.

"I think we would have signed up for a 60 at the start of the day," Blair said. "We hit some good shots, hit some good putts, and we had a good day."

Patrick Fishburn sinks long birdie putt at Zurich Classic

Blair returned to action on the PGA TOUR last season after a serious shoulder injury caused him to miss nearly two years of action. He regained PGA TOUR status via fulfilling a major medical extension. And it's not like he hasn't been busy, though -- The Tree Farm, the course Blair is the visionary of just outside Aiken, South Carolina, is now open.

Fishburn is a rookie on TOUR this season and has made just two cuts so far in 2024.

"It's kind of why you're out here playing is to have opportunities like this," Blair said. "I've been out here a handful of years now, so I know that they don't come that often, and so we'll do our best to go take advantage of it."

Blair, 33, and Fishburn, 31, have been long-time pals and were quick to heap praise on each other and their games.

"It's pretty easy to hit shots when Zac is always in the fairway, always on the green. He's always available," Fishburn said. "That's kind of been our key word for the week. It's pretty easy for me to swing free knowing that Zac is always going to be there.

"Zac still hasn't missed a fairway since he was a kid. He hasn't broke a tee, hasn't missed a fairway. He's gotten up-and-down every single time ... things haven't changed."

Added Blair: "Just kind of rode (Fishburn) all day. He played good. Started off super hot."

Fishburn said it was "pretty special" to have the opportunity to play alongside his friend on the PGA TOUR after finally earning his TOUR card for the first time via the Korn Ferry Tour last season.

And now the good friends have a good chance to leap into the winner's circle on the PGA TOUR -- together.

"I think it's kind of one of those weeks where you're maybe able to stay a little bit looser, especially having a friend as your partner," Blair said. "I think that's kind of really what we've tried to do is just not take it too seriously. We know tomorrow will be a big day, but it's a really cool opportunity for both of us."
