   CM launches ‘International Tour for Teachers’ programme

• State government making earnest efforts for improvement in education

Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu today launched the ‘International Tour for Teachers’ programme from the hotel Peterhoff. In the first batch, 102 teachers selected from across the state were being sent on a five-day tour to Singapore on February 24. The Chief Minister also provided foreign tour kits to the selected teachers. On March 15, the second batch of 98 teachers would be sent on tour abroad.

The Chief Minister said that during their exposure visit abroad, they would get an opportunity to be familiar of new technologies in the education sector besides being acquainted with new methods of teaching and education which would ensure better coordination between teachers and students.

Himachal’s ranking has adversely lowered to 18 th  position in terms of providing qualitative education due to lack interest of the previous government. The present government was making every possible effort to improve the standard of education, so that the students could become competent to meet the future challenges. He said that the Rajiv Gandhi Day-Boarding Schools being opened in the state were a unique initiative towards providing qualitative education and in the coming ten years, these would emerge as the best schools, where along with education, all other adequate facilities would be available.

The Chief Minister said that from the next academic session, English medium would be introduced from class first in government schools.

He said that the vision of self-reliant Himachal has been presented in the second budget of the congress government, which would yield positive results in the next few years. Himachal will move forward on the path of progress with new policies and few tough decisions which will be fruitful in times to come. He said that the state government has announced four percent dearness allowance to the employees. Old pension has also been restored, benefiting lakhs of government employees. Not only this, the state government has announced to provide LTC facility to the state employees at least twice during their service period from the next financial year.

Education Minister Rohit Thakur said that today was a historic day as the first batch of teachers were paying exposure visit abroad. This will give teachers an opportunity to learn new methods of education. He said that since the formation of the present government, concrete efforts were being made to improve the quality of education. The state government is filling the vacant posts in the education department on priority basis, so that quality education can be ensured in government schools, he remarked.

After bagging a historic mandate in Himachal Pradesh, the Congress party high command is now preparing an algorithm to select the chief minister. The party observers Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Bhupesh Baghel and state in-charge Rajiv Shukla are meeting the party MLAs to announce the chief minister.

HPCC chief Pratibha Singh, Nadaun MLA Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu and Haroli MLA Mukesh Agnihotri are top Contenders for CMs post .While both Pratibha Singh and Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu belong to the dominating Rajput communities, Mukesh Agnihotri is a Brahmin. So far, Shanta Kumar has been the only Brahmin who remained a chief minister twice.

The name of Jawali MLA and a Congress veteran, Chander Kumar, is also doing rounds in case the party high command prefer an OBC candidate. Despite a sizeable presence, the chances of a Dalit chief minister are rare as the politics in Himachal is dominated by the upper caste Rajputs and Brahmins. Dr Dhani Ram Shandil is among the strongest Dalit leaders.

Sukhwinder singh sukhu, nadaun, hamirpur.

Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, 58, is the Head of the Congress Campaign committee. He has been elected a record fifth time to the state assembly. He defeated Vijay Agnihotri of the BJP by a margin of 3363 votes.

Sukhu started his political career as a student leader when he was a student at Government College Sanjauli, Shimla. He remained General Secretary and President of the college student union and remained President of NSUI between 1989 and 1995. He also remained youth congress chief between 1999 and 2008.

Sukhu was also elected as Shimla Municipal Corporation councilor twice. He rose to the rank of HPCC Chief in 2013 and continued to head the state unit till 2019.

Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu is against Pratibha Singh's candidature as she is not MLA.

Pratibha Singh, President Himachal Congress, Lok Sabha MP

Lok Sabha MP from Mandi, Pratibha Singh, is also a frontrunner for the Chief Minister's post. She is banking on the legacy of her late husband Virbhadra Singh.

The 66-year-old started her political career in 1998 when she contested the Mondi Lok Sabha election. She was however defeated by the Maheshwar Singh of BJP. She managed to win this election in 2004 and defeated Maheshwar Singh.

Pratibha Singh contested the Lok Sabha election third time in 2013 and defeated Jai Ram Thakur of BJP by a huge margin of 1.39 lakh votes. She however faced another defeat in 2014 from BJP's late Ram Swaroop Singh due to the Modi wave. Surprisingly, she managed to win Mandi Lok Sabha byelection in 2021 when there was a BJP government in the state.

Pratibha Singh was made president of the state unit of Congress on April 26, 2022 and is now eyeing chief minister’s post. She has indirectly warned the party high command that it should not ignore the legacy of Virbhadra Singh. Pratibha's son Vikramaditya Singh has also desired to vacate his Shimla rural seat in case Pratibha is made a chief minister as she is not the member of Legislative Assembly.

Mukesh Agnihotri, Haroli , Una

Journalist turned politician Mukesh Agnihotri has also won his fifth assembly election. He started his political career in 2003 by contesting assembly election on a Congress ticket. He was also inducted as a cabinet minister by the then Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh in 2012. He became leader of Opposition in 2017 when Congress was dethroned by the BJP.

Mukesh Agnihotri is believed to be close to Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra. He was once a supporter of Vir Bhadra Singh. He is silent on the issue of the face of the chief minister but is being considered as a contender.

Chander Kumar, Jawali, Kangra

Chander Kumar is a Congress veteran who remained a cabinet minister a record five times. Chander Kumar has won Jawali assembly constituency which is part of Kangra district.

He lost his 2017 election to the BJP. He started his political career in 1982 when he became agriculture minister. He also won the 1984, 1989, 1993 and 1998 assembly elections and was a cabinet minister. He was also elected as member of Lok Sabha from Kangra in 2004.

Vikramaditya Singh, Shimla (Rural)

Son of former Himachal CM Later Virbhadra Singh and HPCC Chief Pratibha Singh, Vikramaditya Singh has been elected as a member of state assembly second time from Shimla rural assembly constituency.

He is not in the race of the chief minister but the party high command can consider him for a deputy chief minister's post to strike a balance of power between Shimla and the district from where the chief minister will be sworn in.

Vikramaditya Singh is an alumnus of Delhi University. He did his Bachelors from Hansraj College and Masters from St Stephen's College.
