Nearly 71 Million People Expected to Travel over July 4th Week

This year’s extended independence day forecast exceeds pre-pandemic numbers, sets new record.

train travel 28th july

WASHINGTON, DC (June 20, 2024) – AAA projects 70.9 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Independence Day holiday travel period*. For the first time, AAA looked at the entire July 4 th week, plus the Saturday before and the Sunday after the holiday. This year’s projected number of travelers for that time period is a 5% increase compared to 2023 and an 8% increase over 2019.

“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We anticipate this July 4 th week will be the busiest ever with an additional 5.7 million people traveling compared to 2019.”

Share of Travelers by Mode pie chart and Number of Travelers by Mode table

AAA projects a record 60.6 million people will travel by car over Independence Day week – that’s an additional 2.8 million travelers compared to last year. This year’s number also surpasses 2019 when 55.3 million people traveled by car over July 4 th week. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Dallas, Denver, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco are the cities displaying the highest rental demand during the holiday week. The busiest pick-up days are projected to be Friday, June 28, Saturday, June 29, and Wednesday, July 3.

Gas prices are lower than last year when the national average was $3.53. Pump prices will likely continue going down leading up to Independence Day.  At that point, they will likely level off and remain relatively stable until after Labor Day, similar to last year.  An important caveat is hurricane season – underway now – which could affect gas prices should a storm negatively impact Gulf Coast oil production and refining centers.

The number of air travelers is also expected to set a new record. AAA projects 5.74 million people will fly to their July 4 th destinations. That’s an increase of nearly 7% compared to last year and a 12% increase over 2019. AAA booking data shows domestic airfare is 2% cheaper this Independence Day week compared to last year, and the average price for a domestic roundtrip ticket is $800. Airports will be packed throughout the week. AAA recommends arriving 2 hours early, reserving parking ahead of time, and traveling with carry-on luggage versus checked bags to save time and money.

More than 4.6 million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. This category is seeing an increase of 9% compared to last year, but this year’s number is shy of 2019’s figure of 4.79 million. Cruising continues its remarkable post-pandemic comeback. This time of year, Alaska cruises are in high demand, making Seattle and Anchorage top domestic destinations. Cruise travelers are also finding deals this summer. With new ships coming onto the market – and going for a premium – some cruise lines have been offering targeted discounts to fill older inventory for remaining cabins.

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says the worst times to travel by car before and on July 4 th are between 2pm and 7pm. Drivers should hit the road in the morning, and travelers returning on Monday, July 8 th should avoid rush hour traffic in the morning and afternoon.

“Drivers in large metro areas can expect the worst traffic delays on Wednesday, July 3 rd , as they leave town, and Sunday, July 7th, as they return,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. “R oad trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal. Travelers should monitor 511 services, local news stations, and traffic apps for up-to-the-minute road conditions.”

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

For example, Atlanta routes = ET and Los Angeles routes = PT.

  Top Destinations

This July 4 th week, travelers are cooling off in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska – and by the ocean! Seattle, Vancouver, and Anchorage are top destinations because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Beaches in South Florida, Honolulu, Punta Cana, and Barcelona are in high demand. Historical sites in European cities like London, Rome, Dublin, Paris, and Athens are also popular. The top 10 domestic and international destinations below are based on AAA booking data.

Family Road Trip Checklist

With road trips expected to set a new record this July 4 th week, AAA teamed up with Chicco to share safety tips for families with young children.

  • Check car seat fit. Before you hit the road, check your child’s weight and height to ensure they’re in the right seat and mode of use – especially when it comes to transitioning from rear to forward-facing. Children should remain rear-facing as long as possible for better protection of their head, neck, and spine in the event of a crash. If you are unsure which car seat is best for your child, Chicco offers a car seat comparison guide.
  • Double check car seat installation. Even if your car seat is already installed in the car, it’s worth checking everything is safe and secure. An easy at-home way to do this is with the “inch test.” Simply grab the seat at the car seat belt path and pull side to side and front to back. If it moves more than one inch in any direction, uninstall and start over until a secure fit is achieved. For any questions, utilize the car seat manual, QR codes, or online resources like those offered by Chicco.
  • Secure loose items in the car. Take time to organize and clean up your car before hitting the road. Storage organizers that secure to the back of the driver and passenger seats are simple solutions to make sure everything has a spot, especially loose items that can become projectiles in case of a sudden stop.
  • Be prepared for the unexpected. Pack an emergency kit with first-aid supplies, water, snacks, blankets, jumper cables, and flares. Make sure your phone is fully charged – and keep a charger in the car – to call AAA or request roadside assistance digitally if your battery dies, you lock yourself out, or you need a tow.
  • Map your route. Families with young children should plan for frequent and longer stops along the way. Map out your route ahead of time with AAA TripTik and browse hotels, restaurants, and other activities along the way on AAA Trip Canvas.
  • Bring entertainment. Make sure to place toys and books within reach to keep children entertained. If your kids use tablets or other electronics, make sure the devices are fully charged and pre-downloaded before leaving home. Another fun way to get the whole family excited for the road trip is to create a family playlist of everyone’s favorite songs!

Holiday Forecast Methodology

Travel Forecast

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of May 27, 2024.

Because AAA forecasts focus on domestic leisure travel only, comparisons to TSA passenger screening numbers should not be made. TSA data includes all passengers traveling on both domestic and international routes. Additionally, TSA screens passengers each time they enter secured areas of the airport, therefore each one-way trip is counted as a passenger tally. AAA focuses on person-trips, which include the full round-trip travel itinerary. As a result, direct comparisons of AAA forecast volumes and daily TSA screenings represent different factors.

*Independence Day Holiday Travel Period

For this forecast, the Independence Day holiday travel period is defined as the nine-day period from Saturday, June 29 to Sunday, July 7. Historically, the Independence Day holiday period included only one weekend. This is the first year the Independence Day holiday travel period is a longer timeframe with two weekends included.

When is the next train strike? Dates and affected lines in June 2024

Rail unions are expected to announce more industrial action very soon

Chiara Wilkinson

Disputes between trade unions and train companies in the UK have now been dragging on for two whole years, with rail workers taking action to protest poor pay and working conditions. So, it’s a surprise to absolutely no one that more train strikes are expected in the coming months.

Following the ASLEF strikes in May – which saw train drivers at 16 operators across the UK walk out over three days – there is no further action planned on British train services. Yippee! Enjoy this glorious strike-free moment while it lasts.

But don’t get your hopes up too high. The ASLEF union’s members previously voted to continue striking until at least August 2024, so we can expect more industrial action in the coming weeks and months. If a union wants to call a strike, it has to give at least two weeks’ notice.

The most recent update on UK train strikes, ASLEF drivers on ScotRail just rejected a pay offer and the union has threatened to ballot for strike action. ASLEF represents almost all of the 1,300 drivers on ScotRail.

In better news, the RMT says that it has come to some sort of agreement with the Rail Delivery Group (RDG) over pay and job security that has paused action by RMT members.

Here’s everything you need to know about upcoming industrial action on the UK’s rail network.

RECOMMENDED: All you need to know about the train strikes in London . Heathrow Airport strikes 2024: full list of May and June dates and airlines affected .

When are the next train strike dates?

Following a ‘rolling programme’ of ASLEF strikes on May 7-9, no further strike action is planned. Savour this blissfully strike-free time.

What train lines will be affected?

When ASLEF workers go on a nationwide strike, these are the lines that are typically impacted.

  • Avanti West Coast
  • CrossCountry
  • East Midlands Railway
  • Great Western Railway
  • TransPennine Express
  • Greater Anglia
  • GTR (Gatwick Express, Great Northern, Southern, Thameslink)
  • Southeastern
  • South Western Railway
  • Chiltern Railways
  • Northern Trains
  • West Midlands Railway

How will rail travel be affected by the strikes?

During nationwide strikes, rail travel typically comes to a standstill all over the country. You can find out more about how services are affected on the National Rail website .

Often, disruption isn’t just on the day of a strike. There is usually also an impact on services in the afternoon and evening on the day before each strike, as well as on the morning of the day after. This is because trains and drivers are out of their planned positions as a result of the strikes.

Do workers get paid when on strike?

UK law states that employers   do not have to pay   employees who take part in   industrial action. However, some unions keep some money aside to issue strikers with ‘strike pay’ while they occupy picket lines. For example, the RMT has the National Dispute Fund, which is supported by union membership payments as well as donations from members of the public.

W hen will the rail strikes end?

Unless a deal on pay, job security and working conditions is reached between unions and rail operators, it’s likely that strikes could continue for a long while yet. Back in February, ASLEF members voted to continue striking until at least August 2024.

While the RMT reached a deal with the RDG at the end of 2023, this is only a temporary agreement until more discussions take place.

Why are rail workers striking?

Different rail unions have been striking for different reasons – including job security and working conditions – but the overarching reason is a cut in real-terms pay.

Drivers at ASLEF have been walking out after what it called a ‘risible’ pay offer of four percent a year for two years,  as well as changes to working conditions. Some ASLEF drivers haven’t had a pay rise in five years.

What’s the deal with working practices?

Due to changes in travelling habits following the pandemic, with fewer commuters and off-peak train travel, some bosses want to change previous ‘archaic’ working practices and to introduce new technology and run teams more efficiently. Unions fear this may lead to job cuts, and it’s one of the  most contentious issues in the dispute.

Can I get a refund if my train is cancelled?

According to National Rail, if your train is cancelled, delayed or rescheduled due to the industrial action, you will:

• Be entitled to a change or refund from the original retailer of your ticket •  Be able to use your ticket with another train company or an alternative route if it is available

Is the Eurostar affected by the train strikes?

Eurostar has said that strikes will not affect its timetable. However, if you’re getting a connecting journey within the UK, make sure that you check whether it is still running before you leave and allow extra time when travelling to and from London on strike days.

What do rail chiefs and unions have to say about the strikes?

ASLEF general secretary Mick Whelan said: ‘It is now a year since we sat in a room with the train companies – and a year since we rejected the risible offer they made and which they admitted, privately, was designed to be rejected.’

Previously, Whelan said: ‘Many of our members have now not had a single penny increase to their pay in half a decade, during which inflation soared and with it the cost of living.

‘The government has now tried their old trick of changing the rules when they can’t win and brought in minimum service levels legislation. But this new law, as we told officials during the consultation period, won’t ease industrial strife. It will likely just make it worse.

‘There’s no excuse. The government and train operating companies must come to the table with a realistic offer so we can end this dispute and work together to ensure the future of our railways.’

Are there any other strikes to be aware of?

There are indeed.  Heathrow has recently been hit by strikes , and lots of industrial action is taking place in airports across Europe .

NJ Transit, Amtrak service suspended again at Penn Station

Rail service was disrupted for a second day on Friday, with Amtrak trains into and out of New York City delayed or canceled and service on the commuter line NJ Transit suspended during the morning rush.

Several Amtrak trains scheduled to run between New York City and upstate New York were canceled,  the railroad said on X , and trains from Pennsylvania to New York were terminating in Philadelphia.

What You Need To Know

Rail service was disrupted for a second day on friday, with amtrak trains into and out of new york city delayed or canceled and service on the commuter line nj transit suspended during the morning rush widespread train delays and sweltering heat made for a nightmarish commute thursday evening amtrak warned commuters thursday afternoon that high temperatures may require trains to operate at lower speeds.

As of 4:30 p.m., there are still 30-minute delays due to "Amtrak overhead wire issues," according to the NJ Transit website.

Midtown direct trains were being diverted to Hoboken, New Jersey. Raritan Valley Line service will originate from Newark Penn Station. NJ Transit rail tickets and passes are being cross honored by NJ Transit, private carrier buses and the PATH at Newark Penn Station, Hoboken and 33rd Street in New York.

It comes after Amtrak delayed or canceled trains in and out of the city.

NJ Transit, meanwhile, appeared to blame Amtrak for the fact that its own service in and out of Penn Station was suspended during Friday's morning rush hour.

“Rail service is suspended into and out of Penn Station New York due to AMTRAK overhead wire issues in Penn Station New York,” the commuter line, which shares tracks with Amtrak, said on its website.

Service resumed around 11 a.m. with 45-minute delays, NJ Transit said.

Widespread train delays and sweltering heat made for a nightmarish commute Thursday evening.

"I'm disgusted because it's always something different,” said Denise Wooten, who commutes from Montclair, New Jersey, to Penn Station for work. “Delays. This has been going on for too long now. Every time you turn around. I just want to get home.”

NJ Transit and Amtrak users arrived at Penn Station Thursday only to learn that power outages were causing delays from New Haven all the way to Philadelphia.

An Amtrak spokesperson said two things were to blame for the service disruptions: brush fires in Secaucus, New Jersey and a malfunctioning circuit breaker which caused a loss in power on the tracks between New York, and Newark Penn stations.

"I take the train every day, but over the last couple of weeks, NJ Transit has really sucked. I mean we have had very poor services,” said Thurston Green, who takes Amtrak five days a week.

To make matters more unconformable, temperatures climbed well into the 90s Thursday, marking the hottest day of the year so far. And below ground, there wasn’t much relief.

"Look at me. I'm sweating, it's hot. It's too much,” said Wooten.

Amtrak warned commuters Thursday afternoon that high temperatures may require trains to operate at lower speeds, resulting in delays of up to 60 minutes between noon and 7:30 p.m. for the remainder of the week.

Power was restored at 5:30 p.m., but Amtrak warned riders to expect congestion along the rails.

Commuters said they’d like to see more accountability from transit leaders both in New York and New Jersey.

“They have to fix the trains. We keep spending all this money, $5 a fare. There are 365 days in a year, how much money are you spending here? Where's that money going to?” said Shawn Mendez, who was traveling to an event in Newark.

A heat advisory has been issued for the city beginning noon Friday with feels-like temperatures expected to reach 97 degrees.

More journeys to be affected by industrial action as RMT and ASLEF members walk out

The rail network will be hit by more strikes and an overtime ban by the drivers' union ASLEF and the RMT. Here's what you need to know.

Saturday 30 September 2023 03:32, UK

More train journeys will be affected by industrial action causing delays and cancellations across the network into October.

Throughout this year, the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) has taken strike action over pay, jobs, pensions and conditions, with the ASLEF union imposing overtime bans in a dispute over pay.

But now ASLEF, which represents train drivers, is walking out too.

When ASLEF members go on strike, it usually means there are no drivers.

When RMT members are on the picket line, it causes widespread disruption because people working in different jobs across the network are unable to fulfil their usual duties.

Here is everything you need to know:

Industrial action dates

ASLEF members at 19 train companies will be on strike on Saturday 30 September and Wednesday 4 October.

They will also have overtime bans across the network on Friday 29 September and between Monday 2 October and Friday 6 October.

RMT members are on strike, causing severe disruption across the London Underground, on Wednesday 4 October and Friday 6 October.

On full strike days there are likely to be few to no services operating, with disruption and later starts the day afterwards.

Which train lines are set to be affected?

Avanti West Coast

There will be no Avanti services on 30 September and 4 October.

Despite the ASLEF overtime ban, services should run as normal on 29 September and from 2 October to 6 October - with the exception of the strike day on 4 October.

Pic: PA

There will be no c2c services between London Fenchurch Street and Southend Central or Shoeburyness on the two ASLEF strike days.

A reduced service will run - with two trains per hour during peak periods across all routes - on 29 September, 2, 3, 5 and 6 October.

First and last trains will be unaffected.

Chiltern Railways

No Chiltern Railways trains will run on any routes on 30 September and 4 October.

There will be reduced services on 29 September and 2, 3, 5 and 6 October, with trains not stopping at some smaller stations.

The London Underground RMT strike on 4 October and 6 October will mean Chiltern Railways services will be busier than normal.

CrossCountry

There will be no trains running on any routes on the two strike days - 30 September and 4 October.

Some services will be amended on 29 September and on 2, 3, 5 and 6 October.

East Midlands Railway

There will be no trains on 30 September and 4 October.

East Midlands Railway hopes to run normal services on 29 September and on 2, 3, 5 and 6 October, but last-minute cancellations could happen up until 10pm.

Customers are advised to check in advance if their train is running.

Gatwick Express

There will be no services at all on 30 September or 4 October.

A limited Southern service will run between London Victoria and Gatwick Airport on those days.

On 1 October and 5 October, the knock-on effect from strike action will mean services start much later - from 7am.

Non-stop Gatwick Express trains between London Victoria, Gatwick Airport and Brighton will not run on 29 September and 2, 3, 5 and 6 October.

Southern services will still serve the above stations but will be busier than usual.

Greater Anglia

Only limited services will run between Ipswich, Colchester, Southend, Stansted Airport and London Liverpool Street on 30 September.

On 4 October trains between Liverpool Street and Norwich will also run in addition to the above.

All Greater Anglia routes are due to operate as normal on the other affected days but will start later the day after full strike days.

Customers for Stansted Airport should expect only a train an hour on 30 September and 4 October - and services starting later than usual on 1 October and 5 October.

Heathrow Express

On the two strike days - 30 September and 4 October - there will be fewer trains going to Heathrow Airport and they will start later and finish earlier.

Trains will run between Paddington and Heathrow between 7.40am and 6.25pm.

Services between Terminal 5 and Paddington will run between 7.42am and 6.57pm.

And there will be trains between 7.47am and 7.02pm from Heathrow Central into Paddington.

The Elizabeth Line will service customers travelling from London to Heathrow.

London North Eastern Railway has said services will be "extremely limited" on 30 September and 4 October.

There will be "minor alterations" on the ASLEF overtime ban days - 29 September and 2, 3, 5, and 6 October.

Exciting new train routes in Europe for 2024 and beyond

As the movement towards flight-free travel gains traction and the popularity of interrailing continues to grow, European train journeys are making a remarkable comeback.

Spain’s national rail operator, Renfe, has recently unveiled its first high-speed train connection with France. Furthermore, starting from 25th March 2024, European Sleeper, a night train start-up, will extend its Brussels-Berlin service to Prague.

Switching up your travel mode is not just an eco-conscious choice, but also a stylish and efficient way to get around. For instance, when you fly from London to Paris, you release 14 times more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than you would by taking a train.

Thankfully, European countries are heavily investing in their railway networks, offering improved and faster connections to passengers. From budget-friendly night trains to cross-country routes, let’s explore the latest European railway options.

Vienna to Paris with Nightjet

Austria’s national rail firm, ÖBB, has been leading the renaissance of sleeper trains in Europe since 2016. In late 2021, they introduced a new route connecting Vienna and Paris through Salzburg and Munich. The journey, spanning 14 hours, operates three times a week in both directions, with ticket prices ranging from approximately €30 for a seat to €120 and above for a private compartment. In the summer of 2023, Nightjet unveiled their new-generation trains, equipped with wireless charging stations, free Wi-Fi, secure storage for bicycles and snow sports equipment, and private compartments featuring showers and toilets.

Vienna to Genoa and La Spezia with Nightjet

Nightjet expanded its 2023 timetable by extending the Vienna/Munich service to include stops in Genoa and La Spezia, Italy. From there, travellers can connect to trains bound for Monaco, Nice, and Cinque Terre .

Brussels to Berlin via Amsterdam with European Sleeper

After much anticipation, European Sleeper , a Belgian-Dutch social cooperative, launched its maiden route from Brussels to Berlin via Amsterdam on 25th May. This single-change journey connects passengers to Paris, London, Prague, and Warsaw. Starting from 25th March 2024, the service will further extend to Dresden and Prague.

Liège to Aachen and Maastricht with Arriva, SNCB, and NS (December 2023)

A brand new three-country train service will link Aachen in Germany, Liège in Belgium, and Maastricht in the Netherlands. This project is a collaborative effort between Arriva, part of Germany’s Deutsche Bahn Group, SNCB, the National Railway Company of Belgium, and NS, Nederlandse Spoorwegen.

Czech Republic

Prague to zurich with čd.

In December 2022, České dráhy (ČD), the national rail operator of the Czech Republic, introduced a sleeper service linking Prague to Zurich with stops at Frankfurt and Basel. This overnight journey, reviving a service that ceased in 2017, takes slightly under 14 hours and offers a range of fare options, from six-bed couchettes to deluxe sleeper compartments with en-suite toilets and showers. Tickets for a berth in a six-bed couchette start from €49.90.

Paris to Bourg-Saint-Maurice with Ouigo Grande Vitesse (December 2023)

Embrace the winter wonderland in the Alps with the return of Ouigo’s Paris-Bourg train, running from 14th December to 24th March. Bourg is nestled at the base of the Les Arcs skiing area, and a funicular railway swiftly transports you from the town to the Arc 1600 ski resort in just seven minutes.

Paris to Aurillac with SNCF (December 2023)

The Paris-Aurillac night train, out of service since the early 2000s, is set to make a triumphant comeback later this year. SNCF Voyageurs has announced that Le Pyrénéen and L’Occitan night trains will connect the French capital with the south-central commune from 10th December 2023. A daily train will serve Cantal during holiday periods, with Friday and Sunday evening services available in each direction the rest of the time. This initiative is part of a broader effort to revive France’s night trains, which has already included the Paris-Nice and Paris-Lourdes services.

Paris to Berlin with Nightjet (2023) and TGV (2024)

Austrian rail operator ÖBB’s Nightjet is set to relaunch its Berlin-Paris service on December 11, 2023, after a nine-year hiatus. Initially, it will offer three trips per week, with plans to provide daily service from autumn 2024. France and Germany have jointly announced a new TGV train route connecting Paris and Berlin, scheduled to begin in 2024. This high-speed link will significantly reduce travel times, eliminating the need for passengers to change trains at separate stations, such as Cologne or Frankfurt, and allowing them to complete the journey in about seven hours.

Paris to Madrid with Trenitalia (late 2024)

In December 2022, FS Italiane Group, the owner of Italy’s national state-owned railway Trenitalia, unveiled plans for a high-speed Frecciarossa train connection between Paris and Madrid. This new train will link Paris and Barcelona, where an existing high-speed service already connects to the Spanish capital. The service is expected to launch in late 2024, with potential for additional routes linking Madrid with Italy through France.

Paris to Venice with Midnight Trains (2025)

French startup Midnight Trains is set to connect France and Italy with a new night train service from Paris to Venice via Milan, commencing in 2025 and backed by the European Commission. This development will simplify and expedite train travel for UK residents heading to Italy.

Nightjet’s 2023 timetable expansion saw its Vienna/Munich service to Milan extended to include stops in Genoa and La Spezia, Italy, offering further connections to Monaco, Nice, and Cinque Terre.

Stuttgart to Zagreb and Rijeka with Nightjet and EuroNight

In their 2023 timetable, Nightjet expanded its sleeper train service from Munich to Venice, Ljubljana , and Zagreb , now originating in Stuttgart, Germany. Seasonally, this route will also operate to the coastal Croatian city of Rijeka , with a total journey time of approximately 15 hours. The Nightjet to Venice travels via Munich, Salzburg, and Treviso, while the service to the Croatian and Slovenian capitals is provided by Croatian Railways HŽ and Slovenian Railways SŽ, operated under ÖBB’s EuroNight.

Brussels to Berlin with European Sleeper

Genoa to naples with ntv italo.

In late 2021, the Italian high-speed rail company NTV Italo launched a service connecting Genoa, a previously poorly connected port city in Italy’s northwest, to the south of the country. This journey from Genoa to Naples takes just under seven hours, with prices starting at around €80 for a return trip.

Milan to Paris with Frecciarossa

Also in late 2021, Frecciarossa, the high-speed branch of Italy’s national train operator Trenitalia, unveiled a luxurious new train route between Milan and Paris. Faster and more opulent than previous services on this route, the journey lasts just under seven hours, with tickets as affordable as €29, although executive fares offer a more comfortable experience.

Rome to Pompeii with Frecciarossa

In July, Italy launched a direct high-speed train service from Rome to Pompeii and back. This service links the capital with the popular archaeological site in southern Italy’s Campania region in under two hours, departing from Rome at 8:53 am and returning from Pompeii at 6:40 pm. Initially, the service will only run on the third Sunday of each month, but future expansions are possible.

Porto to Lisbon and Vigo with the Iberian high-speed rail network (construction starting in 2024)

Portugal has greenlit plans for a high-speed rail line connecting Lisbon, Porto, and Vigo, as part of the broader Iberian high-speed rail network that will unify Portugal and link it with Spain. This transformative rail link will reduce the travel time between Porto and Lisbon from nearly three hours to just 1 hour and 15 minutes, ultimately connecting Portuguese cities with Vigo in Spain.

Netherlands

Initially, tickets will be priced at €9 one-way with one suitcase, eventually stabilising at around €30. Renfe’s Aryo, another low-cost operator, is set to launch its Madrid to Alicante service on March 27, starting at just €7, with Iryo launching a similar service on 2nd June. In 2023 and 2024, Ouigo intends to extend its services to Cordoba, Seville, Malaga, and the Costa del Sol.

Barcelona to Madrid with Iryo

A new high-speed rail service from Iryo, a consortium between Spanish airline Air Nostrum and Italian train company Trenitalia, has made traveling between Spain’s capital and its top tourist city faster and more affordable since November 2022. Iryo offers 16 return trains daily between Barcelona and Madrid, with a travel time of as little as 2.5 hours each way, all for a cost of just €18. Starting 31st March 2023, this low-cost rail provider will also launch a service between Malaga, Madrid, and Cordoba, with a journey time of three hours. From June 2023, Renfe’s Avlo will connect Madrid with Malaga and Seville.

Travel options range from seats in a carriage (starting from €25) to shared compartment beds (beginning at €45), as well as private compartments for two passengers with a sink (from around €165). For those seeking added comfort, private compartments for one to three travellers include showers, toilets, and breakfast, starting at around €205. Pet-friendly train compartments are also available. Combined with existing Eurostar and Deutsche Bahn services, this train allows travellers to reach Stockholm from London in under 24 hours.

Switzerland

Zurich to rome with nightjet.

In a 2020 press conference, Nightjet announced its plans to launch a new night train route between Zurich and Rome in winter 2022. However, whether this project proceeds as scheduled remains to be seen. Presently, Nightjet’s Rome routes include Vienna, Salzburg, Villach, and Munich.

Map reveals where new rail routes could be introduced across the UK

inside of grand union train

More frequent and new rail services could be on the way, as independent operators roll out plans to launch extra trains around the country.

Stirling in Scotland and Carmarthen in Wales could be some of the first places to have direct links to London after proposals from prospective open-access company Grand Union Trains (GUT).

It is one of several operators to give rail travel a boost and offer low fares on already expensive routes.

They are backed by the UK government , which says the rise of open access gives customers more choice and increases passenger numbers.

Rail minister Huw Merriman said: ‘It’s not just a question of us having rail operators compete with each other.

‘There’s an opportunity for rail to take passengers that may otherwise fly or indeed drive.

‘Open access is such a positive.’

Map showing the new rail routes that could come in the future.

Mr Merriman added: ‘There’s no industrial action on open-access operators, perhaps because it’s a fresher way of working with the workforce rather than on an old rule book basis.’

During recent rail strikes, companies like Lumo and Grand Central have been able to continue running services due to their separate status.

GUT is also consulting on a possible service between Edinburgh and Cardiff. There is currently no direct route connecting the Scottish and Welsh capitals.

Other would-be open-access operators include Go-Op, which aims to run services between Taunton and both Weston-super-Mare and Swindon, and Wrexham, Shropshire & Midlands Railway, which hopes to create a route between London Euston and Wrexham.

Lumo also plans to extend its route between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh to reach Glasgow, while FirstGroup wants to launch a service between the same London terminus and Sheffield.

What is an open-access rail operator?

Most of the major rail operators in the UK are either owned or paid management fees by the UK, Scottish and Welsh governments.

LNER, Scotrail, CrossCountry, Avanti West Coast and many, many others fall into this category.

But the tracks can also be used by open-access operators, which set their own fares, take full commercial risk, and don’t receive any taxpayer-funded subsidies.

They include companies like Lumo, Grand Central, Heathrow Express, Eurostar and Hull Trains – with several more due to spring up soon.

Proponents say the availability of these other options increases competition which drives down fares.

But critics argue that the companies are simply taking advantage of a ‘false economy’, and it would be better for passengers if the large operators just simplified their timetables.

Grand Central managing director Ian Yeowart said: ‘It’s not only good for passengers – as whether (the operators) survive depends on how good they are and what their customers think – but there are no handouts from the government.

‘Like every other business, if people don’t like it and don’t come, it won’t survive.’

But Gareth Dennis, an engineer who writes about the rail industry, said open-access services should not be permitted in the UK because of the complexity of fitting the trains into already crammed timetables.

He said: ‘The argument on the Continent for open access operators is that they provide competition, but there’s no meaningful competition on a rail network that’s as saturated as ours.

‘What you need is a simple, repetitive timetable that moves huge numbers of people.’

Mr Dennis argued that the operators could charge lower fares because they use depots that exist for other companies and can recruit staff that had been trained already rather than training their own.

He added: ‘It’s a false economy really.’

TSA breaks record for most individuals screened on a single day, readies for record-breaking Independence Day weekend travel volumes

WASHINGTON — As airline passengers prepare to take to the skies this Independence Day holiday, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is prepared for a sustained period of high passenger volumes. TSA expects to screen more than 32 million individuals from Thursday, June 27 through Monday, July 8, which is a 5.4% increase over 2023 Independence Day holiday travel volumes. On Sunday, June 23, TSA broke the record for most people screened on a single day, screening nearly 3 million (2.99 million) individuals . This summer’s record-breaking travel volumes reflect the role TSA and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have in securing the nation’s transportation systems, while ensuring freedom of movement for people and commerce, which is vital to our country’s economic well-being.

TSA anticipates the peak travel day will be Friday, June 28, when the agency expects to screen more than 3 million individuals. TSA is staffed to meet its wait time standards, which are 10 minutes and under in TSA PreCheck lanes and 30 minutes and under in standard screening lanes. Seven of the top 10 busiest travel days ever have occurred over the past month.

“We expect this summer to be our busiest ever and summer travel usually peaks over the Independence Day holiday,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. “Compared to last year, we have cut our attrition rates by almost half and increased our recruiting as a result of the TSA Compensation Plan that was funded in the budget passed by Congress and signed into law by President Biden. The traveling public is on the move, which is a sign of a healthy economy. We are ready, along with our airline and airport partners, to handle this boost in passenger volumes.”

Airline passengers should be aware that security screening technologies may vary by airport. Although TSA follows strict standardized screening protocols, it is important for passengers to arrive early and listen to the guidance provided by Transportation Security Officers (TSOs).

Below are some frequently asked questions that provide an overview of the TSA technologies and procedures individuals may encounter during screening process.

Do I need to show a boarding pass to the TSA officer?

All airline passengers must have their acceptable ID and boarding pass ready at the security checkpoint entrance.

Do I need to take off my shoes?

TSA requires individuals in standard screening lanes to remove their shoes during the screening process. However, individuals 12 and under or 75 and older are always permitted to keep their shoes on during the security screening process.

Passengers with TSA PreCheck may leave their shoes on unless they alarm during screening. Most airports have dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes during some peak hours. Some airports have blended lanes where passengers with TSA PreCheck are screened in standard lanes, but they will receive a card indicating they have TSA PreCheck to carry with them during screening, and will be screened as a TSA PreCheck passenger.

Can family members go through the TSA PreCheck lane with me?

Teenagers aged 13-17 may accompany TSA PreCheck enrolled parents or guardians through screening when traveling on the same reservation and when the TSA PreCheck indicator appears on the teen’s boarding pass. Children 12 and under may accompany an enrolled parent or guardian in the TSA PreCheck lanes without restriction. This benefit is another reason to join the nearly 20 million people who have enrolled in TSA PreCheck. For customer flexibility, there are three TSA PreCheck enrollment providers from which passengers may choose: Telos, CLEAR and IDEMIA. For more information on any of the enrollment provider options and TSA PreCheck, visit www.tsa.gov/precheck .

Other advice from TSA

With more than 430 federalized, commercial airports nationwide, 685 security checkpoints and 2,412 security screening lanes, it may be challenging to know what to expect at any airport. Here are some additional tips to help ensure an efficient screening experience:

  • Pack smart. Always start packing with a bag that is empty to ensure there are no prohibited items present during security screening. Place electronics larger than a cell phone and travel size liquids at the top of your carry-on so they can be easily accessible if they must be removed. Remember that all liquids must be 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less if they are in your carry-on bag.
  • Arrive at the airport two hours before scheduled boarding time. Allow ample time to park,  navigate to the terminal, check luggage with the airline if needed and proceed through the checkpoint. Most flights board 30-45 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time.
  • Review guidelines for traveling with children. Airlines may request proof of age documentation during check-in for children 12 and under traveling unaccompanied. Proof of age documentation must also be provided for children two and under planning to sit on an adult passenger’s lap. A birth certificate is an acceptable proof of age.
  • Get assistance prior to traveling. Do you have a question about an item and whether or not it is allowed through security screening? Download the MyTSA app and use the “What Can I Bring?” feature to determine whether an item is allowed or prohibited in carry-on luggage. You may also snap a picture of an item and send it to @AskTSA on X (formerly Twitter) or Facebook Messenger for real-time assistance. Passengers may text their question to TSA by texting “Travel” to AskTSA (275-872). Passengers who need additional assistance through security screening may request a TSA  Passenger Support Specialist (PSS). A PSS is a TSO who has received specialized training, including how to effectively assist and communicate with individuals with disabilities, medical conditions or those who need additional screening assistance. Individuals should request passenger assistance at least 72 hours in advance by contacting  our TSA Cares passenger support line  at (855) 787-2227. Live assistance for both the TCC and TSA Cares is available weekdays, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET, or weekends and holidays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.
  • Double-check your luggage tags. Many bags look alike, so passengers should tag every piece of checked luggage with their name and address. We also recommended they include additional addresses inside each bag in the event the outside tag falls off. When retrieving checked luggage at baggage claim, it is important that individuals check the tags to ensure they have picked up the correct bag.
  • Do you carry a firearm? Prepare, pack and declare. Passengers may travel with a firearm , but it must be secured as the passenger’s checked baggage; packed unloaded; locked in a hard-sided case and declared to the airline when checking in at the airline ticket counter. Firearms are prohibited at security checkpoints, in the secure area of an airport and in the passenger cabin of an aircraft, even if a passenger has a concealed carry permit or is in a constitutional carry jurisdiction. TSA does not confiscate or seize firearms. If a passenger brings a firearm to the security checkpoint on their person or in their carry-on luggage, the TSO will contact local law enforcement to safely unload and take possession of the firearm. Law enforcement may also arrest or cite the passenger, depending on local law. TSA may impose a civil penalty up to almost $15,000, and for the first offense, passengers who bring a firearm to a security checkpoint will lose TSA PreCheck® eligibility for five years. Second violations will result in permanent disqualification from the program and additional civil penalties.
  • Do you have TSA PreCheck? Make sure your Known Traveler Number (KTN) is in your airline reservation. TSA PreCheck passengers do not need to remove shoes, belts, 3-1-1 liquids, laptops, food items and light jackets at the TSA checkpoint. TSA’s wait time standards for TSA PreCheck lanes are under 10 minutes whereas as standard lanes are under 30 minutes. If you are not yet enrolled in TSA PreCheck, you may enroll via one of TSA’s authorized enrollment providers starting as low as $77.95 for a five-year membership. Most new enrollees receive their KTN within three to five days. Members may renew membership online up to six months prior to expiration for another five-year term starting as low as $68.95. Visit TSA PreCheck at www.tsa.gov/precheck for more information, and to begin your enrollment.
  • Respect frontline aviation workers. Violence and unruly behavior in airports and onboard aircraft are not acceptable and will result in significant delays at security checkpoints. TSOs, along with all frontline airport and airline employees and local law enforcement, are working together to ensure safe and secure travel. Assaulting a TSA employee is a federal offense and will result in penalties and/or arrest.

July 2024 strikes: Full list of walkout dates, from junior doctors to buses

Industrial action is set to continue into July, following strikes throughout June by junior doctors and Border Force staff

In the week leading up to the general election , junior doctors will walk out for the 11th time since March last year, in a long-running pay dispute .

Tram services in London will be disrupted, with members of the Unite union walking out on several dates throughout July.

And in Merseyside, Stagecoach bus drivers will strike for eight days in total next month.

When are the junior doctor strikes?

The British Medical Association (BMA) has announced junior doctors in England will strike between 7am on Thursday 27 June to 7am on Thursday 2 July .

This means that Wednesday 1 July will primarily be the affected day.

Junior doctors are qualified doctors who are still involved in clinical training, according to the BMA. Patients may be treated by a junior doctor in a hospital or general practice setting.

The current base starting salary for a junior doctor is about £26,000, although this does not take into account weekend or out-of-hours work payments.

I'm a junior doctor leaving the NHS after two years – I burned out at 27

Dr Robert Laurenson and Dr Vivek Trivedi, BMA junior doctors’ committee co-chairs, said: “We made clear to the Government that we would strike unless discussions ended in a credible pay offer.

“For more than 18 months we have been asking Rishi Sunak to put forward proposals to restore the pay junior doctors have lost over the past 15 years – equal to more than a quarter in real terms.

“When we entered mediation with Government this month, we did so under the impression that we had a functioning government that would soon be making an offer. Clearly no offer is now forthcoming. Junior doctors are fed up and out of patience.

“Even at this late stage Mr Sunak has the opportunity to show that he cares about the NHS and its workers. It is finally time for him to make a concrete commitment to restore doctors’ pay. If during this campaign he makes such a public commitment that is acceptable to the BMA’s junior doctors committee, then no strikes need go ahead.“

When are the bus drivers’ strikes?

Nearly 500 Stagecoach bus drivers in Liverpool will escalate their pay dispute with further strike action this July.

Workers are angry over the disparity between their pay and that of Arriva Liverpool drivers. Arriva drivers are paid £1.40 more an hour, equating to around £3,000 a year, for performing the same role.

According to the union Unite , Stagecoach announced revenues of £773.2 million for the half year to 28 October 2023, up from £669.6 million during the previous six months.

Drivers will strike on the following days in July, with the threat of an all-out continuous strike if Stagecoach do not make an acceptable pay offer:

  • Friday 5 July
  • Saturday 6 July
  • Sunday 7 July

Monday 8 July

  • Friday 12 July
  • Saturday 13 July
  • Sunday 14 July

Monday 15 July

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “For too long Stagecoach has got away with paying its Liverpool drivers on the cheap. This shows a total lack of respect and appreciation for its workers, without whom there would be no bus service, and for the communities on Merseyside who rely on their buses.

“Unite’s Liverpool Stagecoach members have their union’s total backing in striking for a fair pay rise.”

Affected services will be confirmed closer to the time. For more information, click here .

When are the London tram strikes?

Engineers on London trams will be striking over a pay disparity with colleagues doing similar work on TfL ’s Tube trains.

Engineers are angry that their colleagues on London Underground are paid up to £10,000 more per year, despite performing the same roles and having the same qualifications.

The first of two strikes begins on 1 July and will last a whole week. TfL is advising tram passengers to complete their tram journeys by 8pm on Sunday 30 June . Services will not return to normal until Monday July 8 .

Strike action will resume on Friday 12 July until Sunday 14 July , disrupting services to Wimbledon on the finals weekend. TfL advises travellers to plan ahead, allow more time for your journey and check before you travel. Here is how services will be affected on different days:

Monday 1 July – Friday 5 July Friday 12 July – Sunday 14 July

No service is expected before 7am or after 6pm on the entire London Trams network

Will there be more train strikes?

Disputes between train companies and trade unions have been ongoing for two years in the UK , with rail workers protesting over pay and conditions.

At present, no train strikes are scheduled, but the Aslef union’s members have previously voted for further industrial action until at least August this year, meaning more disruption for passengers is likely over the summer. Unions are required to give two weeks notice ahead of strike action.

Will there be more airport strikes?

An exceptional IT failure at the UK’s main air traffic control service, European strikes, extreme weather events, and staffing issues all contributed to travel misery last summer.

On Sunday, thousands of passengers were stranded at Manchester Airport after a power cut saw 140 flights cancelled.

The travel strikes that could affect holidays over half term and summer

More than 90,000 were affected when the power loss hit security and baggage screening in Terminals One and Two.

At present, there is no industrial action scheduled this summer for UK airlines.

Ongoing strikes by French air traffic control workers have caused concern, but expected industrial action has been called off following President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to call a snap election.

Recent measures, such as requiring controllers to declare strike participation 48 hours in advance, have also improved management capabilities and minimised the impact on flight schedules.

The Royal Duchy

Sunday 28th july 2024.

These ever-popular summer day trips by steam train run from Bristol Temple Meads, Yatton and Taunton to Devon & Cornwall. The route includes travelling along the internationally famous sea wall at Dawlish, crossing Brunel’s famous Saltash Bridge into Cornwall, and some of the most varied and exciting scenery in the country. Passengers can choose to spend time in Plymouth or travel on to Par, where buses are provided for visits to Fowey or Charlestown.

Our train leaves Bristol Temple Meads steam hauled by a locomotive from the Carnforth Pool at around 08:15 and stops to pick up further passengers at Yatton and Taunton. Almost immediately on departure from Taunton, our steam locomotive will be working hard as it tackles the climb to Whiteball Summit. We stop at Exeter St. David’s station for our locomotive to take on water and for more passengers to join the train. We leave Exeter and follow the Exe Estuary to the seaside. We then travel along the famous sea wall between Dawlish and Teignmouth, an experience not to be missed. After Newton Abbot, our steam locomotive will demonstrate her real strength as she powers up some of the steepest main line gradients in the country. First there is the difficult climb to the summit at Dainton Tunnel, followed by a dramatic drop down to Totnes, then an equally difficult climb up Rattery Bank before descending to Plymouth. Passengers have the option to alight at Plymouth or remain on the train to Par. There will be over five hours free time to explore the historic maritime city of Plymouth which includes the Hoe, the ancient Barbican and seafront areas, and the National Marine Aquarium. We leave Plymouth, steam hauled, and cross the river Tamar on Brunel’s masterpiece, the Royal Albert Bridge, to enter Cornwall. Our train continues through the magnificent Cornish countryside to Par, where there will be a break of more than three hours. Buses will take passengers from Par, at no extra charge, to visit either the picturesque seaside town of Fowey or the harbour village of Charlestown. The latter is a working port and home to the Shipwreck, Rescue & Heritage Centre. Our locomotive will turn and service at St Blazey’s before we embark on our return journey. We leave Par steam hauled by our locomotive at around 17:40 and stop at Plymouth to pick up those passengers who chose to alight there. Our train then returns to Bristol, stopping to set down passengers at Exeter, Taunton and Yatton enroute.

Top Travel Insurance Companies Comparison

The best travel insurance companies offer comprehensive coverage options for a wide range of people and needs. For this guide, we looked at coverage options, customizability, and the best companies for specific situations, such as pre-existing conditions.

Here are Business Insider's picks for the best travel insurance companies in 2024.

Best Overall Travel Insurance

Nationwide travel insurance.

Nationwide is of the largest players in the travel insurance space, offering nearly endless options for any customer on the travel spectrum, including annual travel insurance plans which can offer frequent travelers the flexibility to "set it and forget it" on their travel insurance coverage.

Nationwide Essential also offers some of the most affordable policies in the market compared to similar plans from competitors, which makes it a great pick for just about anyone. Buyers can discuss bundling options as Nationwide also sells homeowners, auto, pet, and other insurance products. Its travel insurance quoting is just as easy as it has been with other Nationwide insurance products.

Best Travel Insurance Runner-Up

Axa assistance usa.

AXA offers consumers a great option for no-stress travel insurance: low-priced plans, generous coverage limits on key categories including primary insurance on lost luggage, and up to 150% reimbursement for qualifying trip cancellations.

While add-ons are limited and rental car coverage is not included by default on cheaper plans, AXA is a perfect fit for travelers who don't plan to drive (or who already hold a travel credit card with rental car coverage), and don't need any additional bells and whistles.

Best Travel Insurance for Cruises

Travel guard.

AIG is well-known insurance provider, and a great fit for travelers who want to ensure that they can get their money back in the event of canceled or interrupted travel plans.

While the company's policies can be pricey compared to its competitors, the high medical and evacuation limits make AIG a solid choice for older travelers who value peace of mind and simplicity over highly customizable plans that may be bolstered with medical upgrades.

Best Travel Insurance for Reputation

C&f travel insured.

While every travel insurance company has negative reviews about its claims process, C&F Travel Insured 's claims process has a consistent stream of positive reviews. One customer wrote that C&F processed a claim within 48 hours. Additionally, C&F regularly responds to customer reviews within one business week, making reviews a consistent way to reach the company.

Additionally, in C&F's fine print, it mentions that any claims that take more than 30 days to pay out will begin to accrue interest at 9% APY.

C&F's reputation isn't the only thing to speak highly of. It offers an array of add-ons uncommon in the travel insurance industry, such as Interruption for Any Reason insurance and CFAR coverage for annual plans. C&F also offers discounts for children on its Protector Edge plan and free coverage on its Protector plan.

Read our C&F Travel Insured review .

Best Travel Insurance for Pre-Existing Conditions

Tin leg travel insurance.

Tin Leg is a great fit for travelers with medical issues in particular. Seven of Tin Leg's eight travel plans include coverage for pre-existing conditions as long as you purchase your policy within 15 days of your initial trip payment.

Thanks to coverage for pre-existing medical conditions as well as for potential COVID-19 infection while traveling, this company offers some of the best financial investment options for travelers who are or will be exposed to higher health risks and issues.

Read our Tin Leg Travel Insurance review .

Best Travel Insurance for Digital Nomads

Worldtrips travel insurance.

WorldTrips has affordable premiums, highly customizable add-ons, and generous coverage for core categories of travel insurance. All this makes it a great option for digital nomads, students studying abroad and backpackers.

However, travelers should keep in mind that plans are not particularly flexible, and coverage amounts are limited unless you plan ahead to pay for the areas and amounts that you need.

Read our WorldTrips Travel Insurance review .

Best Travel Insurance for Affordability

Trawick international travel insurance.

Trawick is another insurance provider with robust medical travel insurance that can help higher-risk and anxious travelers find peace of mind while on the road. This company offers one of the most generous medical evacuation policies in the market, although travelers will need to remember to add on rental car coverage if they need it.

Read our Trawick Travel Insurance review .

Best Travel Insurance for Road Trips

Travelex travel insurance.

Travelex offers three plans:

  • Travel Basic
  • Travel Select
  • Travel America

The Travelex America plan is meant for trips limited to the U.S., but it has the highest coverage limits in many areas compared to its other programs. If you're flying somewhere, the lost baggage limits are higher. Its natural strengths shine for road trippers, though. Travelex America adds coverage for roadside service and rental car coverage for unexpected accidents. It also covers pets should you be involved in an accident while on the road.

While your standard auto insurance does extend to car rentals within the U.S. for a limited time, any accident would affect future rates. Travelex would eliminate the risk of reporting to your auto insurance provider for minor incidents within its purview.

Introduction to Travel Insurance

Why travel insurance is a must-have.

The unpredictable nature of traveling – from flight cancellations to medical emergencies – can turn your dream vacation into a nightmare. Travel insurance acts as a personal safeguard, ensuring that unexpected events don't drain your wallet or ruin your trip.

Understanding Different Types of Travel Insurance

Not all travel insurance policies are created equal. From single-trip travel insurance policies to annual travel insurance plans , from minimal coverage to comprehensive protection, understanding the spectrum of options is your first step in finding the right fit for your journey.

Key Features to Look for in Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance for medical emergencies.

Imagine falling ill in a foreign country; daunting, right? A robust travel insurance plan ensures you don't have to worry about how much emergency medical care while traveling will cost, even in the most remote corners of the globe. This coverage will often come in tandem with emergency medical evacuation coverage.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Benefits

Life is full of surprises, some less pleasant than others. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage ensures that you're not left out of pocket if unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel or cut your trip short. You may also look for cancel for any reason and interruption for any reason options, which will reimburse you for a percentage of your nonrefundable fees, but expands the covered reasons you can cancel a trip. You can find our guide on the best CFAR travel insurance companies here.

Coverage for Personal Belongings and Baggage Loss

Losing your belongings is more than an inconvenience; it's losing a piece of your world. Insurance that covers personal belongings and baggage loss ensures that you're compensated for your loss, helping you to rebound and continue your adventure.

Support and Assistance Services

In times of trouble, having a lifeline can make all the difference. Look for insurance that offers 24/7 support and assistance services, giving you peace of mind that help is just a phone call away. Also, check websites that field customer reviews like Trustpilot, the Better Business Bureau, and InsureMyTrip , to see how well a company responds to customer requests.

Choosing the Best Travel Insurance

Reputation and reliability of the travel insurance provider.

A provider's reputation is not just about being well-known; it's about reliability, customer satisfaction, and the ability to deliver on promises. Researching and choosing a reputable provider is a cornerstone in ensuring your safety and satisfaction.

Understanding the Policy's Fine Print

The devil is in the details, and understanding the fine print of what your travel insurance policy covers is crucial. Be aware of coverage limits, exclusions, and the process for filing a claim to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Customer Reviews and Feedback

In the age of information, customer reviews and feedback are goldmines of insight. Learn from the experiences of others to gauge the reliability and customer service of the insurance provider you're considering. While the ratings are important, you should also look at whether or not a company responds to customer complaints.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Travel Insurance

Knowing your policy inside out.

Familiarize yourself with every aspect of your policy – what it covers, what it doesn't, how to file a claim, and who to contact in an emergency. Being informed means being prepared.

Steps to Take When a Problem Arises

If you face an issue during your travels, knowing the immediate steps to take can make all the difference. Keep important contacts and your policy details handy, and remember, your insurance provider is there to assist you.

How to Pick the Best Travel Insurance Company for You

There isn't a one-size-fits-all policy that works perfectly for every traveler. Young, healthy solo travelers can opt for much cheaper plans that offer bare-bones coverage, while families juggling complex itineraries will do best by investing in a robust policy that can help defray any costs associated with lost baggage, delayed transportation or other trip-impeding obstacles.

That being said, you can't go wrong with a travel insurance provider that boasts a reputable history and offers a wide range of customizable plans. In some cases, you may be comparing plans that are only a few dollars' apart from each other. In such situations, you should generally opt for the insurance company that offers the strongest customer service. It's also worth considering whether or not the travel insurance provider has been reviewed by other travelers with similar itineraries to your own.

An insurance aggregator like InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth is one of the best tools for searching travel insurance policies. Once you input the specifics of your travel itinerary, you'll be able to see hundreds of search results to compare the ones that catch your eye. If the options are too overwhelming, use the filters to the left of your search page to eliminate as many irrelevant plans as possible.

How We Reviewed the Best Travel Insurance Companies

To come up with our list of the best travel insurance companies, we evaluated each insurer based on the following factors:

Guide Methodology: What We Considered

Policy Types

Travel insurance is essential, but often underused partly because people aren't getting what they want. Business Insider's 2023 travel study showed 10.65% of travelers surveyed bought cancel for any reason insurance. Cost may be a factor, but in many cases, the coverage is more affordable than you might think. Regardless, companies must offer a diverse range of coverage options. We award five stars to companies offering all standard coverages and additional options like pet and sports equipment protection.

Our 2023 travel study indicated the majority of purchases were made through the travel provider (ex: flight protection insurance when you're purchasing your airline tickets). While these may be sufficient for some customers, we look for companies offering a more comprehensive range of services.

According to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association, the average cost of travel insurance will be between 4% and 8% of total travel expenses. Anything beyond that price point should include additional benefits beyond the standard inclusions, such as CFAR protection or upgraded medical coverage. Anything below that 4% threshold may leave you lacking important or sufficient coverage in an emergency.

Convenience and Flexibility

Whether you're an infrequent traveler or a suitcase warrior, a good travel insurance company should have you covered. In many cases, you might not even have to talk to a person in order to purchase your policy.

Many people think of travel insurance in context with specific trips, but most of these top contenders sell both single-trip and multi-trip policies, also known as annual travel insurance. Some companies also offer plans specifically designed for cruisers, students abroad, and business travelers. (Read our guide to the best cruise travel insurance companies for more details.) Finally, all of these providers offer multiple options for getting the specific areas and amounts of coverage that you want.

Claims Handling

Most travelers never have a large claim. Premiums are low, and it provides peace of mind for the just in case situations. So they leave reviews based on their reduced stress levels. But what happens if you lose your luggage or have to stay a few extra days due to an unexpected accident? Will your insurance carrier cover your claim without all the hassle? We check real customer reviews to sort this out for you.

Ease of Use and Support

When purchasing, during your trip, and throughout the claims process, you may need extra support. Does the company have a 24/7 help line? Does it have an online or mobile system allowing you to self-manage? Essentially, what are the options when you need help? We look at the big picture to evaluate the average customer experience with each company.

You can read our full insurance rating methodology for even more details.

Best Travel Insurance FAQs

There isn't a one-size-fits-all solution for every traveler. Determine the benefits that are most important to you, like baggage delay coverage, medical coverage, and trip delay coverage, then look for a company with solid customer ratings, especially when it comes to processing claims.

Travel insurance will pay out if you experience a covered event, such as a travel delay or delayed or lost baggage. If you're looking to get travel insurance for a specific reason, such as needing to potentially cancel your trip due to work reasons, make sure your policy will cover you in that situation before purchasing it. You should also check customer reviews to see other travelers' claims experiences, as it varies wildly from company to company.

The average cost of travel insurance is 4% to 8% of your total trip cost, so it could vary widely depending on where you're traveling and the length of your trip. Your age, the number of people in your group, and other factors can also influence how much you'll pay.

Most comprehensive travel insurance policies include travel medical coverage that can come in handy if an emergency occurs and you need medical evacuation. Some travel insurance plans offer more specialized coverage for travelers with pre-existing conditions , so shop around if medical coverage is a top priority for you.

$100,000 should be a sufficient medical coverage limit for travel insurance. If you're planning on doing extreme sports or anything particularly risky on your trip, you may want to increase your coverage level. A high medical coverage limit is especially useful when you're purchasing cruise travel insurance, since medical evacuations are more involved at sea.

Passengers advised to plan their train travel ahead on the 27th of July due to further national industrial action.

Chloe White avatar

A further special ‘strike day' timetable is to be put in place on Wednesday the 27th of July as the fourth day of national strike action takes place.

The strike action is being called for by leaders of the RMT and will bring unnecessary and completely avoidable disruption for rail passengers and comes after strike action which took place in June . Thousands of fully qualified and specially-trained backup staff will step in throughout the walkout in order to keep essential services running for those who need them.

Just 20% of services will run over 50% of the network and passengers are being urged to only travel by train if they have to, and if that is the case to leave extra time, and to check what time their last train departs.

Passengers with advance, off-peak or anytime tickets purchased on a strike day are able to use it for travel the day before or up to and including Tuesday the 2nd of August. Passengers are also able to change their tickets to a different date or get a refund if their train is cancelled or rescheduled.

Passengers with monthly or longer season tickets or Flexi season tickets with activated days' worth of travel who opt not to travel on the 27th or 30th of July are able to claim compensation for the days via the Delay Repay Scheme. Further information can be found on the National Rail website.

Andrew Haines, Network Rail chief executive, said:

“Despite our best efforts to find a breakthrough, I'm afraid there will be more disruption for passengers next week as the RMT seems hell-bent on continuing their political campaigning, rather than compromising and agreeing a deal for their members.

“I can only apologise for the impact this pointless strike will have on passengers, especially those travelling for holidays or attending events such as the UEFA Women's Euro 2022 semi-final (Wednesday 27th) and the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games (Thursday 28th). It is frustrating to yet again ask our passengers to change their plans and only make essential journeys.”

Approximately half of Britain's rail network will be open on the 27th of July operating very limited services running on lines that can only be open from 7.30am to 6.30pm. Passengers who have to travel are advised to make sure that they can complete their journeys within this time frame and an example of this would be the last services from London to Scotland will leave during the early afternoon.

Passengers also need to be aware of disruption on the morning of Thursday the 28th of July as services will start later as employees return to their duties.

Steve Montgomery, Chair of the Rail Delivery Group , said:

“We are incredibly disappointed that the RMT and Aslef leadership are continuing with this action, disrupting the summer plans of millions – including those attending the Commonwealth Games.

“While we will do all that we can to minimise disruption to passengers, our advice is to only travel if it is necessary, and if you are going to travel, please plan ahead. If you're not able to travel, you can use your ticket either the day before or up to and including 2 August, otherwise, you will be able to change your ticket or claim a refund.

“We have a responsibility to bring our railway up to date and give our passengers a more punctual and reliable service so that we're able to give our staff the pay rise they deserve. But it is wrong to continue asking taxpayers to shoulder more of the burden when they have already contributed £600 per household during the pandemic, or to expect passengers to fund it by paying more for their tickets when they too are feeling the pinch.

“We ask the RMT and Aslef's leadership to continue talking so we can come to a deal that works for our people, our passengers and for taxpayers.”

Separate from the strike action mentioned above, Aslef has called strike action for eight rail operators on Saturday the 30th of July which will see substantial disruption for some routes, a 24-hour strike by Aslef members on the Greater Anglia network will also take place on Saturday the 23rd of July. Passengers are once again asked to check their travel ahead of making their journeys on both dates. Further information is available via the National Rail website .
