Booking.com is part of Booking Holdings Inc., the world leader in online travel and related services.

Verified reviews from real guests.

We have more than 70 million property reviews, all from real, verified guests .

How does it work?

It starts with a booking.

The only way to leave a review is to first make a booking. That's how we know our reviews come from real guests who have stayed at the property.

Followed by a trip

When guests stay at the property, they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff is, and more.

And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.

If you booked through us and want to leave a review, please sign in first.

Travel Guide

Moscow's opulence and high culture is a sight to be seen. Forget what you learned about Russia in grade school. This lavish capital of a formerly communist nation has fully embraced the luxuries, excesses and decadence of Western capitalism. Like many former Soviet countries, Mother Russia struggles to successfully confront issues of widespread poverty, alcoholism, failing healthcare, and environmental protection. But Moscow has burgeoned into one of the most expensive, exclusive and largest travel destinations in the world. It comes complete with world-class museums, magnificent palaces, $1,000-a-night hotels, "face-control" nightclubs and internationally-renowned restaurants. Don't think you can afford Moscow? Don't be afraid. You can still find affordable deals if you are vigilant. This metropolis has a big and bold character and grandiose setting that's definitely worth getting to know.

Where To Stay In Moscow – Best Hotels In Moscow Included!

Post author SJ

Written by our local expert SJ

Sarah-Jane has lived in Croatia for 10+ years. SJ, as she is known, has been traveling the Balkans & beyond since 2000. She now shares her passion for traveling with her husband & kids.

Written by travel writer Ivan Tannenberg . Ivan is an independent traveler, history junkie, and techno-geek.

In this post, I’ll try to answer the question ‘where is the best place to stay in Moscow?’ as best as I can!

Russia’s sprawling capital, one of the must-visit cities in the country , has long been known as an expensive city for hotel rates. While the situation has improved significantly over the past several years, the authorities are still adding accommodation in Moscow to suit every taste and budget .

Moscow is rapidly becoming a city that caters to a well-heeled clientele and travelers on a tight budget . After several trips to Moscow, I’ve noticed that many people tend to stay near the Kremlin. It is definitely convenient but adds up quickly. In this post, I’ll try to answer the question ‘where is the best place to stay in Moscow?’ as best as I can!

Central District

  • Kitay-Gorod:  The very heart of Moscow, arguably the best area to stay in Moscow for tourists
  • Basmanny: Best place to stay in Moscow with kids
  • Krasnoselski:  Home to several railway stations and other transportation options
  • Presnensky: This area to stay in Moscow if you’re short on cash
  • Tverskoy: A central Moscow nightlife district and the best place to stay in Moscow to experience the night scene
  • Zamoskvorechye:  Historic district in central Moscow, just across the Moskva River from the Kremlin

Western District

  • Dorogomilovo: Nice area of Moscow to stay for Stalinist architecture and other monumental buildings

Eastern District

  • Izmailovo:  Quieter area home to gorgeous historic architecture and markets

Best Accommodation In Basmanny District, Moscow

1. mercure hotel baumanskaya – 4 stars.

Russia-Travel-Blog_Things-to-do-in-Russia_Where-to-Stay-in-Moscow_Mercure-Hotel-Baumanskaya

This hotel is a short walk from Baumanskaya metro station, the Epiphany Cathedral at Yelokhovo, and the Yauza River. This quiet and small hotel has free WiFi, and it didn’t feel like staying in a branded hotel (Accorhotels).

The interior is done up in a modern style, while the rooms are equipped with plentiful amenities. The hotel restaurant offers a delicious variety of international cuisine. Additionally, there is a wide variety of dining establishments in the area nearby.

The staff is friendly and fluent in English (unlike many other hotels in Moscow). All public areas in the hotel were designed to provide effective wide-spectrum air cleaning, so lung disorder sufferers are sure to breathe easily here. Complimentary bottled water in rooms is likewise provided for those staying at this hotel, which is one of the best places to stay in Moscow, Russia’s capital for couples and families.

2. Pokrovka 6 Hotel – 3 Stars

Russia Travel Blog_Things to do in Russia_Where to Stay in Moscow_Pokrovka 6 Hotel

This small but lovely hotel occupies an attic in a building with oddly shaped rooms. Located some 12 minutes’ walk from the Red Square and just 7 minutes from the Kitai-Gorod metro station, Pokrovka 6 Hotel has its clean and up-to-date rooms decorated in light and bright colors.

Chistoprudny Boulevard and the area around it are filled with several excellent restaurants, so make sure to visit some of them.

Best Accommodation In Krasnoselsky District, Moscow

3. hilton moscow leningradskaya – 5 stars.

"Russia

This typical Hilton hotel is situated in one of Stalin’s Seven Sister skyscrapers and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. Although it is close to the busy Leningradsky and Kazansky railway stations, the hotel’s Moscow city area is not grotty. Hilton Moscow Leningradskaya provides easy access to all major transportation hubs with several business centers and various governmental institutions around.

I have stayed here many times and always had excellent service from pleasant and helpful staff. As one of the top Moscow hotels, it also has very comfortable beds, a swimming pool, restaurants, and bars and is a short ride from the Red Square, one of the absolute top sites in Moscow.

Brands We Use And Trust

Best accommodation in presnensky district, moscow, 4. red brick hotel – 3 stars.

Russia Travel Blog_Things to do in Russia_Where to Stay in Moscom_Red Brick Hotel

While there are plenty of mid-range hotels in Moscow’s historical center, the Red Brick Hotel is my favorite one. Located within walking distance of Kitai-Gorod metro station and the Pryanik Museum, the hotel has some of its rooms decorated with brick walls and, in general, look very stylish. Some of the rooms may be smaller than in other hotels around, but they were recently renovated and are very cozy.

The staff was accommodating and knowledgeable, and they even offered me some valuable tips for exploring the area around . I enjoyed their food in a casual atmosphere, great value for money.

If you’re searching for where to stay in Moscow as a tourist, this district and hotel is always a good choice!

Best Accommodation In Tverskoy District, Moscow

5. four seasons hotel moscow – 5 stars.

Russia Travel Blog_Things to do in Russia_Where to Stay in Moscow

I will be honest; Four Seasons Hotel is one of the best hotels in Moscow. Overlooking the Manezhnaya Square is just three minutes walk from the Red Square and the State Historical Museum.

Okay, this hotel near Red Square Moscow is not very far from the Kremlin walls. Still, with 180 elegant rooms, monumental Stalinist architecture, and over-the-top amenities, it offers a wide range of excellent facilities and the best service.

6. Arium Hotel – 4 Stars

Russia Travel Blog_Things to do in Russia_Where to Stay in Moscow_Arium Hotel

With 60 small no-frills rooms, this accommodation in Moscow is not just a hotel or a B&B, but the owners refer to it as an attractive hotel for business and savvy travelers alike! Located in the Tverskoy District (with exceptional city access and cool and trendy bars in the area), Arium Hotel features a restaurant that serves Caucasian cuisine and a 24-hour gym. The rooms come with complimentary free WiFi. They also provide a roundtrip airport shuttle for a surcharge.

Additionally, the Tverskoy District is also home to renowned Tverskaya Street, the main boulevard and one of Moscow’s best streets. It’s a magnificent road to walk on, flanked by impressive buildings and countless shops. The country’s most expensive street is Russia’s counterpart of other famous boulevards like Oxford Street or the Champs-Élysées.

7. Vagabond Hostel – Moscow Budget Accommodation

Russia Travel Blog_Things to do in Russia_Where to Stay in Moscow_Vagabond Hostel

With a cool and catchy business name, the Vagabond hostel was founded by two nomads who have a reputation for being avid travelers. Their hostel is yet another fantastic place to stay while backpacking Moscow, where you can relax, chat with fellow backpackers and find travel buddies to hang out with. If you’re looking for things to do at night in Moscow, your fellow guests will be able to give you some tips.

It is a really well-thought-out hostel that features a kitchenette, extra luggage storage for your backpacking gear , a shared lounge, and bathrooms. Situated just two metro stops away from Belorusskaya railway station (where Aeroexpress trains from Sheremetyevo arrive) near the monument of Pushkin, this hostel is definitely not to be missed while in Moscow.

Additionally, Vagabond Hostel lies in a popular nightlife area in Moscow, too. So, if you’re trying to figure out where to stay in Moscow for nightlife, this would be a great choice. This is arguably the best place to stay in Moscow for backpackers and budget travelers.

Russia Travel Blog_Things to do in Russia_Where to Stay in Moscow_Comrade Hostel

Perhaps one of Moscow’s best hostels for socializing is its central location, proximity to a wide range of tourist attractions, and accommodating English-speaking staff. Located on the third floor of a historical building in the Russian capital’s very heart, the Comrade Hostel is really clean.

While the lack of an elevator may cause some inconvenience, you shouldn’t worry. Ask the staff to help with your luggage , and they will gladly do just that. The hostel offers laundry and self-catering facilities.

Best Accommodation In Dorogomilovo District, Moscow

11. radisson royal hotel moscow – 5 stars.

"Russia

Set in one of the wealthiest Moscow neighborhoods, next to Kutuzovsky Avenue and the Russian Government’s main office, this high-rise is one of the two Joseph Stalin skyscrapers you can actually get into. And it is well worth the effort.

Like its sisters, the Radisson Royal Hotel Moscow, formerly known as the Hotel Ukraine, is unique in its grandeur. The interior underwent a comprehensive renovation in 2010. Now, the hotel is regarded as one of the best in Moscow.

Besides its spectacular collection of arches, stained glass windows, and a painted ceiling, the hotel also has a restaurant serving delicious mouth-watering food. A fleet of all-weather luxury tourist boats cruises the Moscow River even in the dead of winter, definitely one of those cool things to do in Moscow.

Best Accommodation In Izmailovo District, Moscow

12. vega izmailovo hotel – 4 stars.

Russia Travel Blog_Things to do in Russia_Where to Stay in Moscow_Izmailovo Tourist Hotel Complex

One of the most budget-friendly Moscow accommodation options, the Izmailovo complex comprises five interconnected blocks, which are very popular with big groups of travelers. Each of the five blocks has its own name, but service and prices are often quite similar.

Although not necessarily located in the central Moscow districts, the hotel is situated right beside Partizanskaya metro station. It takes about 20 minutes to reach Red Square by metro. The Izmailovo Kremlin and the area locals call the Vernissage (an otherwise large shopping area and the flea market) were just a bonus to staying at this hotel .

travel and accommodation

Travel not to escape life but for life not to escape you, a popular quote. Nowadays, traveling has become more accessible and possible, allowing more people to explore worlds and cities thousands of miles away. As one walks through foreign streets and enjoys a culture different from theirs, another essential aspect is finding that perfect travel accommodation that fully matches your style, goals, and budget.

There are many things to consider in finding the ultimate accommodation for your trip, below is an extensive guide on everything you need to know about travel accommodation as well as some tips and tricks to get the best deals.

What are the types of travel accommodations?

travel accommodations

There are several types of travel accommodations and the options, size, and rate varies depending on the season, location, number of guests, and property amenities to name a few. Discover below the most common travel accommodation and lodging types!

Hotels and Resorts

The most popular type of travel accommodation is hotels. They are comfortable, convenient, and highly flexible depending on your preferences. There are hotels from all ranges of the budget, from low-cost ones to high-end luxurious suites and penthouses. A hotel is also a popular choice among families and people on business trips. Hotels also offer the best form of convenience, comfort, and security among all the other types of accommodation. Some hotels can accommodate one to two guests, there are family suites and multiple bedroom units for big groups. Typical inclusions in a hotel stay also include a private bathroom and toilet, a small closet, a small fridge, sometimes a mini kitchen, and a breakfast buffet. Linens, towels, and toiletries are also provided for each of the guests.

What makes hostel different from hotels? Well, quite a lot of things. First, hostels don’t have the same level of exclusivity and security. Hostels are for those who either want to cut down some expenses on accommodation as well as experience a more social environment. Hostels also offer everything from private rooms to shared rooms that vary from 3, 4, 6, 8, sometimes even up to 20 people on dorm-type rooms. Some hostels also double as an attraction by itself, with unique features and interiors. These boutique hostels are uniquely designed with detailed interiors and furniture, at times with pockets of garden as well. There are also hostels popular for being “party hostels” with facilities that include an in-house pub or rooftop bar, pools, and beer pong, and billiards tables. In terms of room inclusions, some hostels provide free breakfast, towels, and toiletries, while others don’t. Hostels are especially popular among backpackers due to its cheap fee and its general laidback feel.

airbnb travel accomadation

Somehow a mix between comfort, convenience, and budget, Airbnb accommodations have recently been popular among travelers. Options in Airbnb vary as well from single rooms to shared rooms, and sometimes the entire property. Another great thing about Airbnb is flexibility. Whether you’re a solo traveler, a couple, traveling with kids, or with friends – from 1 guest to 30+, Airbnb has properties to accommodate you. In terms of interiors, some Airbnbs are designed as well to have that unique flair. Some rooms or properties are beach-inspired, while others have that Scandinavian touch, to name a few. Properties in Airbnb also allow guests to utilize the facilities within the rental – such as the kitchen, pool, gym, etc. There are Airbnb properties as well that allow pets and there are some rentals wherein the host or property owner is also staying within the place – for example, a three-bedroom house or condominium, with two bedrooms available for guests, while the main bedroom is reserved for the host. With the many options in Airbnb, it is important to always check the fine print. Airbnb also has added charges such as website service fee and at times cleaning fee, depending on the host.

Beach houses are also fully equipped with everything that the guests may need, from a fully-equipped kitchen to fishing rods, and sometimes even kayaks and life jackets.

A new form of accommodation when traveling, glamping is a combination of glam and camping. The concept is being outdoors but a the same time, retaining that glam, comfort, and style complete with a luxurious interior. There are many ways to do glamping, from tents to treehouses, RVs, cabins, caravans, pods, huts, and A-frame cabins. Glamping accommodations offer five-star amenities at par with hotels and resorts, but at the same time retains that genuine feeling of being one with nature. Sleeping pods, hotel capsules

Sleeping pods, hotel capsules

For travelers who simply want a place to rest for the night and store their valuables, sleeping pods or hotel capsules are recommended. These are also ideal for those with long layovers who want to skip booking a hotel room. Sleeping pods/hotel capsules first became popular in Japan, especially with businessmen frequently flying in and out. The pods just allow space to stretch and sleep comfortably, with its own small lamp, and maybe a small pull-out desk or drawer for storage. Luggage is kept on a separate place within the area and there are shared bathrooms and toilets for the guests.

  • Great for: solo travelers, business trips, frequent flyers

Couch surfing

Accessible via an app or its website, CouchSurfing is – as the name suggests – is surfing through couches (but can also be beds). It follows the principle of being in a new town and calling up a friend and wondering if you can stay for the duration of your trip, whether it is in a couch in their living room or a spare bedroom in their place. The hosts and couch surfers interact via a website, wherein both create accounts and submit necessary verification documents for security. The core of CouchSurfing is trust and respect both between the guests and hosts – there are good and bad stories. The views and experiences regarding Couchsurfing vary.

What are the best types of accommodation?

Choosing the best accommodation for your travel is dependent on your travel style, goals, budget, and location. As long as these align, any travel accommodation would be a good fit. There are also instances though that one aspect may need to be adjusted, in favor of the other factors. An example would be going for a higher priced travel accommodation in a more accessible and safer location, compared to a cheaper one but doesn’t generally feel safe. There can also be compromises in terms of room facilities, such as choosing between an air-conditioned room or a fan room, going for solo room or shared, and so on.

  • Hostels: For socialization, a different experience when traveling, and for lower costs

  • Glamping: For travelers who want to explore and stay in the great outdoors without sacrificing comfort and style
  • Couchsurfing: For adventurous travelers looking for free accommodation

  • Low budget: Dorm-type Hostels, AirBnbs, Budget Hotels, Couchsurfing, Homestays
  • Middle budget: Budget Hotels, Shared Room in Hostels, Airbnb Properties
  • High budget: Luxury hotels, AirBnbs, Private Room in Boutique Hostels, Airbnb Properties

Accommodation types unique to destinations

  • City: Hotels, Hostels, Airbnbs
  • Beach/Coastal: Beach houses, hotels, resorts, hostels, Airbnb, Glamping
  • Nature/Outdoors: Hotels, hostels, Airbnb, glamping, cabins, tents, huts, homestays
  • Mountains: Hotels, Airbnb, glamping. cabins, tents, huts, homestays
  • Desert: Hotels, Airbnb, glamping
  • Snow: Hotels, Airbnb

With destinations, in addition to the accommodation types, the actual place also often determine the price and the experience of the place. Accommodations near Disneyland will surely be different in comparison to a rental property in the countryside of France, the capital of Mexico, along the coastline of Australia, and the heart of Bangkok. Accommodations in the city, especially near airports tend to be more expensive as well.

Furthermore, the cost of living in a destination is also an important thing to consider. Generally, accommodations in Europe in comparison to Southeast Asia will vary greatly – both in cost and experience.

The Major Differences Between Hotel, Hostels, and Airbnb

As Airbnb rises to popularity, more and more people are becoming curious about how it’s different from hotels, as well as the difference between hostels and hotels.

Hotels are operated by actual companies and corporations, often with branches locally and globally. Hostels are operated by companies as well, however on a much smaller scale compared to hotels. They also offer private rooms, as well as shared rooms, and dorm-type rooms. Recently, pods and loft-type shared rooms have also been popular among hostels. Airbnbs are operated by individual property owners or hosts, Airbnb itself is just a website where people can register their properties and lease it for guests/travelers.

travel Security

In terms of security, guests can get more peace of mind in hotels, in comparison with Airbnb properties with the entire place being managed by a private individual. The shared space on hostels also makes it less secured compared to private rooms.

Comfort and Convenience

Regarding comfort and convenience, there is a possibility of a draw. Most Airbnb properties are designed to be less expensive than hotels but at the same time, retain its feel and style. Hostels, on the other hand, depend on the type of hostel you are looking at. Same with hotels, these properties range from budget to luxury.

Hotels and Airbnb are both strategically located near popular local attractions, on business districts, and airports. However, Airbnb properties are not just limited to these. There are properties even on less touristy areas, perfect for travelers who prefer the off-beaten path.

Facilities and Amenities

Hotels are fully-equipped with everything a guest might need – from the facilities within the room, as well as the building amenities that include swimming pools, gym, playground, parking, game room, and a commercial area of restaurants, bars, convenience stores, banks, and laundry at the lower floor of the building. For Airbnb, since some properties are located within residential buildings/highrises, they also offer the same amenities. Hostels on the other hand vary, but some also allow the use of shared kitchens, a common area for all, and pools. Other features that guests look out for are Wi-Fi connectivity, access to Netflix (for some), bidet, hot shower, air-condition, and heater among others.

Experiences

travel Experiences

Catering to the needs of their guests; hotels, hostels, and Airbnb often offer the similar experiences of airport transfers, discounted tickets, rooftop bars, and access to tours offered by their partner companies. One unique thing about hostels is that some offer pub-crawls for guests who want to explore the local nightlife. For Airbnb, some hosts also double as tour guides, sometimes providing tips about the locality or even as far as taking their guests around the place.

  • Advantages of Hotels: Comfort, Convenience, Security, Peace of Mind, Hotel Amenities, Good for first-time travelers, guests with children
  • Advantages of Airbnb: Comfort, Convenience, Unique and Local Experiences, Flexibility on cost and payment method, Good for solo travelers or groups, some properties are pet-friendly
  • Advantages of Hostels: Comfort, Convenience, Socialization, Meet and Make New Friends, Flexibility on cost and payment method, Popular among backpackers, Available in private rooms, shared rooms, or dorm-type rooms
  • The Disadvantages of Hotels: Usually the same experience and look/interior every time
  • The Disadvantages of Airbnbs: Less secure, managed by individuals, doesn’t always have housekeeping
  • The Disadvantages of Hostels: Less secure, not recommended for introverts and those who are not comfortable sharing rooms, even with private rooms, some might feel that the place is crowded

Safety Tips when Choosing Travel accommodation

Research, research, research.

  • One of the most important parts of traveling is researching and this applies to travel accommodations as well.
  • Search the internet for the best travel accommodation deals
  • check for customer reviews (xxx and xx are good sites for these), about the room/property, service, staff, vicinity, environment, accessibility from the airport, access to public transportation, building/property facilities such as kitchen or parking
  • check their social media accounts and page reviews, verified accounts are better
  • Ask for recommendations from family and friends

Read the fine print before the final booking, some rentals have additional charges that often come as a surprise for guests.

booking ticket

  • Services such as airport transfer and massage will have additional fees.
  • Consumed food and beverages inside the fridge of hotels will be charged upon checkout.
  • Airbnb, for example, has a cleaning fee and a service fee from the website.
  • Other usual charges include early check-in or late checkout and requested meals, to name a few.
  • There are also non-refundable deposits on some rentals.

Have copies of all your booking reservations, both digital copy (saved in your phone and online) and hardcopy, printed out for added security.

  • When traveling to a non-English speaking country, it is also best to have the name and address of your accommodation in the local language. This is especially helpful when trying to communicate with taxi drivers or asking the way back to your place after exploring.

Inspect the property upon arrival.

  • Although often, hotel staff and hosts will ensure that the place is in the best condition, it won’t hurt to double-check. Inspect the place, the drawers, linens, pillows, even the bathroom if there are items that should be there but aren’t (or vice versa). When staying in hostels, be wary of bedbugs on shared rooms, especially on dorm-type ones. Check the pillows, lift the mattress. In any type of accommodation, insects and bugs are a no-no. If you find some, immediately call the receptionist and you can either ask for a change of rooms or if possible, get your money back and move to a new place.

Conclusion: How to Find the Best Travel Accommodation

The requirements for the best travel accommodation are often similar: a comfortable and convenient place for guests to rest after exploring their destination, as well as a safe place for them to store their belongings and valuables. Where it varies, however, is on the budget, style, and experience that the travel is aiming for. Once you get that perfect mix of the standard requirements and the personalized experience that varies per traveler – that is then the best accommodation.

For solo travelers, it depends whether you are on a budget, backpacking around Southeast Asia or having an Eat, Pray, Love experience in xxx, or a dream vacation in Paris. Hotels are great for comfort and if you simply just wanna lay down at the end of the day and not worry about anything. Hotels are also ideal for travelers who are very particular with their privacy, accommodation, meals, and staff service.

On the other hand, solo travelers who want to save money but also want to spend the night making friends and partying can opt for hostels. These are highly social places with different pockets for people to meet and hangout. There are common spaces on hostels, there are rooftop/in-house bars, and swimming pools (on some). Some hostels also offer organized tours and pub-crawls, perfect for solo travelers who want to explore but at the same time be part of a group.

Solo travelers on shared hostel rooms are also able to meet all sorts of people and travelers from all over. There are good and bad experiences, of course. In the mix of these, all are Airbnb properties, with facilities according to your needs. There are private rooms in a three-bedroom unit, a spare room on a local’s place, or sometimes private sleeping capsules or pods.

Find the Best Travel Accommodation

For couples on a romantic getaway or a bonding trip, hotels and resorts are the best options. These places offer the utmost privacy and comfort for the couple, without sacrificing security and convenience. For couples who are looking to meet more friends, private rooms in Airbnb and hostels are recommended as well.

Family vacation, groups, trips with children: hotels and Airbnb. As mentioned, the accommodation type varies on how you travel and for large groups, especially with children, hotels or Airbnb (entire property rental) are the way to go. Hotels provide the requirements of traveling as a large group as well as the safety, security, and facilities necessary for families with children. There is optimum security, safety features, and kid-friendly areas such as a playground and a kiddie pool. There are also gyms, bars, salons, saunas, and pools for the adults of the family. Facilities such as a fully-equipped kitchen, Wi-Fi, laundry machine, or a laundromat are also available on most Airbnb properties.

Pets are family and while some prefer to leave their furbabies at home or on pet hotels, some lucky ones can join the fun. The good news is that there are several pet-friendly travel accommodations globally, especially on Airbnb rentals and private accommodations. Hosts who prefer to lease the entire property, usually a home, a villa, a cabin, or an RV allows a pet in the accommodation as long as the pets are in their best behavior, do not soil or damage the property, and pose no safety risk on other guests.

When choosing a pet-friendly travel accommodation, it is also important to read the fine print. Some properties only allow small dogs and cats, at times only a maximum number of pets are allowed, or sometimes pets are not allowed inside bedrooms or on the furniture. Updated vaccinations of the pet/s might also be requested by the host or the accommodation. Ensure that all the necessary documentation of your pets are ready and at hand. It is important to note as well that for some travel accommodations, there are additional charges when bringing in pets.

For those who love nature but doesn’t want to be comfortable – glamping is a new experience that is surely a must-try. Imagine looking up to the stars on a crystal dome, in the middle of an island surrounded by a lake or in the middle of a meadow in a lovely forest. Glamping by the beach is popular as well, offering great views of the sea and the luxury of lush linens and breathtaking interior decor. It is the usual environment of a camping ground but the comfort and style of hotels.

There are all types of hotel accommodations depending on the traveler. The important part is to make sure your chosen accommodation fits all your travel requirements. Take advantage of the internet, social media, and the personal recommendations of family and friends. The purpose of the trip affects your accommodation as well. Is it a business trip or a Valentine getaway? How long are you staying, do you prefer accommodations with or without Wi-Fi? These and so much more are to be considered when looking for your next travel accommodation.

Traveling is a fun and enriching experience, whether it is alone, with your special someone, with a group of friends, with family or with your pets. Finding that perfect spot to lay down and rest after a long day of exploring foreign cities and experiencing local cultures, is an important part of traveling. After all, how can one make the most of the trip if they are lacking sleep, if their back hurts from an uncomfortable bed, or their mind is always back to worrying about their valuables? What you need, what the place offers, and the budget – all these combined allow you to find that ultimate accommodation perfect for your trip. Happy travels!

List of Different Accommodation Types for Travel

When planning a trip, one of the most important things to consider is where you will stay. There are many different types of accommodation available, each with its own pros and cons. Understanding the different types of accommodation can help you make an informed decision about where to stay during your travels.

Let’s check out some of the most common options:

1. Hotels and Resorts

When it comes to travel accommodations, hotels and resorts are among the most popular choices. They offer a range of amenities and services to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable.

Hotels and resorts are often rated using a star rating system , which can help you determine the level of luxury and service you can expect. The star rating system ranges from one to five stars, with five stars being the most luxurious and one star being the most basic.

  • One-star hotels: These hotels offer basic amenities and services, such as a bed, bathroom and perhaps a TV. They are often budget-friendly and suitable for travelers who are looking for a no-frills experience.
  • Two-star hotels: These hotels offer slightly more amenities and services than one-star hotels, such as a restaurant or pool.
  • Three-star hotels: These hotels offer more amenities and services, such as a fitness center or spa. They are suitable for travelers who want a comfortable stay with some extra amenities.
  • Four-star hotels: These hotels offer high-end amenities and services, such as gourmet restaurants or concierge services. They are suitable for travelers who want a luxurious stay.
  • Five-star hotels: These hotels offer the most luxurious amenities and services, such as private butlers or personal chefs. They are suitable for travelers who want the ultimate luxury experience.

In addition to the star rating system, many hotels and resorts offer all-inclusive packages that include meals, drinks and activities. Some also have bars and restaurants on site, making it easy to enjoy a meal or drink without leaving the property as well.

Pros of Staying in a Hotel:

  • Convenience: Hotels are designed to provide convenience to travelers. They offer services like room cleaning, concierge assistance and room service, making your stay more comfortable.
  • Amenities: Many hotels offer a wide range of amenities such as swimming pools, fitness centers, spas, restaurants and bars allowing you to relax and enjoy your stay without leaving the premises.
  • Security: Hotels typically have security measures in place such as surveillance cameras, key card access and on-site staff, which can help ensure the safety of guests and their belongings.
  • Location: Hotels are often strategically located in popular tourist areas, business districts or near transportation hubs, making it easy to explore the surrounding area.
  • Variety: There is a wide range of hotel options to choose from, ranging from budget-friendly to luxury so you can find accommodations that suit your preferences and budget.
  • Consistency: Chain hotels often offer a consistent level of service and quality, which can be reassuring for travelers who know what to expect.
  • Privacy: Hotels provide a private and personal space for guests to unwind and rest without the intrusion of others.

Cons of Staying in a Hotel:

  • Cost: Hotels can be expensive, especially in prime locations or during peak tourist seasons. This cost can add up if you plan to stay for an extended period.
  • Limited Space: Hotel rooms are typically smaller than vacation rentals or apartments, which may be less comfortable for longer stays or for travelers with larger groups.
  • Less Authentic Experience: Staying in a hotel may not provide as authentic a cultural experience as staying in a local Airbnb or guesthouse.
  • Limited Cooking Facilities: Most hotel rooms do not come equipped with kitchen facilities. While some may have a mini-fridge or microwave, you often can’t prepare your own meals, which can add to your expenses if you rely on dining out.
  • Impersonal Atmosphere: Hotels can sometimes feel impersonal, with a focus on efficiency rather than a personalized experience. If you prefer a more intimate or homely environment, a hotel might not be your ideal choice.
  • Hidden Fees: Some hotels may charge additional fees for amenities like Wi-Fi, parking, resort fees, and room service. It’s important to read the fine print and understand what is included in the room rate.
  • Lack of Space for Larger Groups: If you’re traveling with a larger group or family, booking multiple hotel rooms can be costly and may not provide the same communal living space as a vacation rental.
  • Limited Flexibility: Hotels often have strict check-in and check-out times, and you may be subject to their policies and rules, which can limit your flexibility compared to other types of accommodations.
  • Potential for Crowds: During peak seasons or special events, hotels can become crowded leading to longer wait times for services and reduced availability of amenities.

Hostels are a popular choice for budget-conscious travelers that typically offer dorm-style rooms with bunk beds and shared bathrooms – although some do offer private rooms as well. This type of accommodation is particularly popular among youth travelers and backpackers , as they offer a social atmosphere and the opportunity to meet other travelers.

Common areas, including lounges, kitchens and dining areas are shared among guests, fostering a social atmosphere and opportunities for cultural exchange. They often attract a diverse clientele, creating an international and multicultural environment and whilst hostels provide economic advantages and social opportunities, they may lack the privacy and comfort of traditional hotels, and noise levels can vary – like if you choose one in downtown San Francisco on St Patricks day – trust me!

Pros of Staying in a Hostel:

  • Affordability: Hostels are generally much more budget-friendly than hotels, making them an excellent choice for travelers on a tight budget.
  • Social Opportunities: Hostels encourage social interaction among guests making it easy to meet fellow travelers, share experiences and make new friends.
  • Cultural Exchange: Hostels often attract an international and diverse crowd, providing opportunities to learn about different cultures and backgrounds.

  • Variety of Types: There are various types of hostels, from traditional ones focused on comfort and tranquility to party hostels for those looking for a lively atmosphere.
  • Flexible Booking: Hostels often offer flexible booking options including both private and shared rooms, allowing travelers to choose what suits them best.
  • Community Atmosphere: Hostels foster a sense of community, where travelers can share tips, advice and travel stories, creating a unique and enriching experience.
  • Kitchen Facilities: Many hostels have communal kitchens where guests can prepare their meals, saving money on dining out.

Cons of Staying in a Hostel:

  • Lack of Privacy: Dormitory-style rooms mean limited privacy, as you’ll share sleeping quarters with other guests, often in bunk beds.
  • Noise and Disturbances: Hostels can be noisy due to the communal nature and disturbances from other guests are not uncommon, especially in party hostels.
  • Shared Facilities: Bathrooms, showers and other facilities are often shared among guests, which can be inconvenient during peak times.
  • Security Concerns: While many hostels have lockers for securing valuables, security can be a concern in shared accommodations.
  • Varied Quality and Standards: The quality of hostels can vary widely, from well-maintained and clean establishments to those with lower standards.
  • Age Restrictions: Some hostels have age restrictions, which may limit options for older travelers or families.
  • Limited Amenities: Hostels may not offer the same amenities as hotels, such as room service, fitness centers or on-site restaurants.
  • Mixed Gender Dorms: Some hostels have mixed-gender dormitories, which may not be suitable for all travelers, especially those seeking single-gender accommodations.

Vacation rentals, such as apartments or homes, are a great option for travelers who want more privacy and space. Vacation rentals are often available through platforms like Airbnb , where owners rent out their properties to travelers and can be a budget-friendly option, especially for families or larger groups.

The most common platform for vacation rentals is Airbnb , an online marketplace and hospitality platform that allows individuals to rent out their homes, apartments, or spare rooms to travelers looking for short-term accommodations.

Hosts list their properties on Airbnb, providing details about the space, amenities, and pricing. Travelers can then browse through these listings, read reviews from previous guests, and make reservations directly through the platform. Airbnb offers a wide range of options, from cozy apartments in bustling cities to secluded cabins in the countryside.

Pros of Staying in an Airbnb:

  • Variety of Accommodations: Airbnb offers a diverse range of lodging options from private apartments and houses to unique and unconventional stays like treehouses and houseboats.
  • Local Experience: Staying in an Airbnb often provides a more authentic and local experience as you can choose accommodations in residential neighborhoods and interact with hosts who can offer insider tips on the area.
  • Privacy: Many Airbnb listings provide guests with the entire property, ensuring a high level of privacy for individuals or groups.
  • Cost-Effective: Airbnb can be more cost-effective than traditional hotels, especially for larger groups or longer stays, as you can often find affordable options.
  • Kitchen Facilities: Most Airbnb listings include kitchen facilities allowing guests to cook their meals and save on dining expenses.
  • Flexibility: Airbnb offers various booking options including short-term and long-term stays, which can suit different travel needs.
  • Personalization: You can choose accommodations that match your preferences, such as a specific location, style or amenities thanks to the detailed listings and search filters.
  • Local Insights: Hosts can provide valuable local insights and recommendations, enhancing your travel experience.

Cons of Staying in an Airbnb:

  • Quality and Consistency: The quality and standards of Airbnb listings can vary widely leading to potential disappointment if the property does not meet your expectations.
  • Lack of Services: Airbnb properties may lack the services and amenities that hotels offer such as daily housekeeping, room service or a front desk for assistance.
  • Cancellation Policies: Cancellation policies vary by host and some can be strict, potentially causing financial losses if you need to change your plans.
  • Security Concerns: While Airbnb has security measures in place, safety can be a concern as properties may not have the same level of security as hotels, and you may not know who else has access to the property.
  • Hidden Fees: Some Airbnb listings may have additional fees such as cleaning fees, service fees or extra guest charges, which can add to the overall cost.
  • Communication Challenges: Communication with hosts can sometimes be less convenient than dealing with a hotel staff, especially if there are language barriers or time zone differences.
  • Limited Availability: In popular tourist destinations, desirable Airbnb listings may book up quickly, so it’s essential to plan and book well in advance.
  • Legal and Regulatory Issues: Depending on your location, there may be legal and regulatory concerns surrounding Airbnb rentals, which could impact your stay.

5. Bed and Breakfasts

A bed and breakfast (B&B) is a type of lodging establishment that offers overnight accommodations and breakfast to guests. What sets B&Bs apart from traditional hotels is their intimate and homely atmosphere. Typically, B&Bs are smaller properties, often family-owned, where guests stay in individual bedrooms within a private residence.

These establishments aim to provide a more personalized and cozy experience with hosts often living on-site and personally interacting with guests. In the morning, a complimentary breakfast is usually served, ranging from simple continental offerings to full, homemad, and often locally sourced meals. B&Bs are known for their warm hospitality, attention to detail and the opportunity for guests to connect with their hosts and fellow travelers, creating a sense of community and a home away from home.

Pros of Staying at a Bed and Breakfast:

  • Personalized Service: B&Bs offer a more personalized and intimate experience, often with attentive hosts who can provide local insights and recommendations.
  • Homely Atmosphere: The cozy and homey ambiance of B&Bs can create a comfortable and relaxing environment for guests.
  • Unique Accommodations: Many B&Bs are located in charming historic homes, cottages or distinctive settings, offering unique and memorable stays.
  • Local Flavors: Breakfasts at B&Bs are typically homemade and may feature locally sourced ingredients, providing a taste of the region’s cuisine.
  • Quiet and Relaxing: B&Bs are often located in peaceful settings, away from the hustle and bustle of urban areas, offering a tranquil retreat.
  • Social Interaction: B&Bs encourage social interaction with hosts and other guests, fostering a sense of community and the opportunity to make new friends.
  • Special Amenities: Some B&Bs offer special amenities like hot tubs, gardens or themed rooms, enhancing the overall experience.
  • Flexible Meal Options: Dietary restrictions and preferences can often be accommodated, as hosts can cater to individual guest needs during breakfast.

Cons of Staying at a Bed and Breakfast:

  • Limited Availability: B&Bs tend to have fewer rooms than hotels so booking well in advance, especially during peak seasons, is often necessary.
  • Less Privacy: While B&Bs offer a homey atmosphere, the level of privacy may be less compared to a hotel, as you are staying in someone else’s residence.
  • Specific Check-In Times: B&Bs may have more restricted check-in times, so it’s essential to coordinate your arrival with the host.
  • Variable Quality: The quality of B&Bs can vary widely, from charming and well-maintained properties to those that may not meet your expectations.
  • Limited On-Site Amenities: B&Bs may not have the same range of amenities (e.g., fitness centers, restaurants) as larger hotels.
  • No 24/7 Reception: B&Bs often do not have a 24/7 front desk, so you may need to communicate your arrival time in advance to ensure a smooth check-in process.
  • Possibility of Noise: Due to the intimate setting, noise from other guests or the host’s activities may be more noticeable than in a larger hotel.

8. House Sitting

House sitting is a mutually beneficial arrangement in which individuals or house sitters temporarily live in someone else’s home while the homeowners are away. During their absence, house sitters take care of various responsibilities, such as looking after pets, maintaining the property, collecting mail and ensuring the home remains secure.

House sitting can range from short-term stays of a few days to more extended periods of several months and offers homeowners peace of mind knowing that their property and pets are well-cared for in their absence, while house sitters often enjoy a cost-effective and unique accommodation option.

House sitting has gained popularity as an alternative way to travel affordably and experience different communities and cultures while providing a valuable service to homeowners.

Pros of House Sitting:

  • Free Accommodation: House sitters often stay in the homeowners’ properties for free, saving a significant amount on accommodation costs.
  • Unique Travel Experience: House sitting allows you to stay in different locations, experiencing local life like a resident rather than a tourist.
  • Pet Companionship: Many house-sitting assignments involve caring for pets, which can be a rewarding experience for animal lovers.
  • Cost Savings: House sitters can save money on accommodation, utility bills and sometimes even groceries, depending on the arrangement.
  • Privacy and Space: You have access to the entire house, providing more privacy and space than a typical hotel or vacation rental.
  • Trust and Responsibility: Homeowners trust house sitters to care for their homes and pets, which can be a fulfilling and responsible role.
  • Local Connections: House sitting can help you establish connections with homeowners and neighbors, offering a chance to make friends and network.
  • Flexible Schedule: House sitters often have flexibility in their schedules, allowing them to explore the local area or work remotely while house sitting.

Cons of House Sitting:

  • Travel Costs: House sitters are responsible for their own transportation to and from the assignment location, which can be a significant expense.
  • No Payment: While house sitters receive free accommodation, they do not get paid for their services, which may not be suitable for those looking to earn income while traveling.
  • Adjustment Period: Adapting to a new environment and adhering to the homeowner’s routines and rules can be challenging initially.
  • Security Concerns: House sitters may be responsible for home security, which can be a concern in some areas, depending on the location and property.

My name is Paul and I love traveling with my wife Nic. We have been lucky enough in my life to be able to see a lot of the world. Oh, and not to mention all those tedious business trips that actually got me to places I would never have gone to as well.

But here’s the thing, we have made all of the mistakes that a traveler can make and have learned a lot along the way so we like to think we have a fairly good idea in regards to what it’s all about. So let's dive in.

The Colony Palms Hotel and Bungalows

Beyond 350 days of sunshine per year, there are so many reasons to visit Palm Springs: sparkling pools, mid-century architecture, world-class events, arts and culture, and a thriving food scene (to name merely a few). It’s one of my favorite destinations in the world, and I have made multiple pilgrimages to the desert each year for the past two decades.

Ready to plan your next trip to paradisiacal Palm Springs? Read on to discover the best hotels and resorts in the region: from boutique gems to sprawling resorts, there’s something for every type of traveler. Our list includes properties at a range of price points. Some are kid-friendly, all are pet-friendly, and many offer bikes for guests to tool around town.

A Southern California-based and -bred travel writer, I curated this list filled with my own favorites, plus expert recommendations from Travel + Leisure editors, contributors, and readers, along with winners from our World’s Best Awards and It List.

Ace Hotel & Swim Club

Stephen Kent Johnson

Also available to book at Hotels.com

The Ace has an overall cool vibe but still feels accessible, with a fun pool scene and delicious (and even healthy) fare at King’s Highway.

Some of the details here favor form over function (as a light sleeper, I question the choice of white window coverings against the desert sun).

Even in a city full of cool hotels, the Ace stands out for its coolness factor. Formerly a mid-century desert modern Westward Ho with a Denny’s, the property is now a 179-room hotel and spa, where I’ve spent many memorable stays, from high-season festivals to low-season hangs by communal firesides.

Here there are two large pools and a spa; the pool scene is lively but not obnoxious, with DJs spinning for events and holidays. King’s Highway restaurant offers excellent California fare in a diner environment, and the next door Amigo Room is the perfect spot for an after-dinner — or daytime — drink. The hotel is within biking distance of downtown.

The Details:

  • Location: Downtown Palm Springs (South End)
  • Distance From Airport: 3.3 miles
  • Accessibility: Accessible rooms available
  • Rates: From $136
  • Parking: Free self parking
  • Pet Policy: Permitted under 25 pounds with a fee of $25 per day per pet.
  • Resort Fee: Yes

Sparrows Lodge

This low-key property in a restored 1950s-era Hollywood haunt is all-around vibey. Borrow a Sole townie bike to ride around town.

There are no TVs or phones in the rooms, and only two guests are permitted in each room.

Originally opened under the name Castle’s Red Barn in 1952 by MGM actor Don Castle and his wife, this property was one of the original resort getaways for Hollywood types in the mid-century age. And it still has that chic, cool energy; I can attest, having swirled around its pool for elite Coachella parties. Now completely restored, this low-key adults-only resort is marked by just a simple hand-painted sign bearing two sparrows.

The rooms, communal barn, fire pit, and vegetable garden, all have a chic rustic vibe. And there’s an on-site art collection with works by Ruscha, Kelly, Katz, and Baldessari. The 20 rooms have exposed beam ceilings, concrete floors with inlaid pebbles, and plush pillow-top mattresses with luxe Italian linens. Bathrooms feature rain showers, and many use horse troughs as unique bathtubs. Most rooms have private patios. Sparrows Lodge scored World’s Best Awards in 2022 and 2023.

  • Location: South Palm Springs
  • Distance From Airport: 2.8 miles
  • Accessibility: Accessible rooms upon request, access to all public areas, chair lift available at pool and jacuzzi.
  • Rates: From $219
  • Pet Policy: Dogs under 40 pounds are welcome, must be leashed outside guest rooms, $100 per stay.

“This is a fun, rustic spot where you can dine in a barn or an outdoor garden, mingle with other guests in the pool or hang on your private patio. It has a cool story that dates back to 1950s Hollywood, but this iteration feels very modern.”  –Nina Ruggiero, Senior Editorial Director

This chic and walkable adults-only hotel is organized around a central pool, which makes for a convivial atmosphere.

The hotel is in a residential area and restricts noise between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.

I was one of the first guests to stay at this ultra-chic property when it opened in 2007 — though mobster Al Wertheimer opened its first incarnation in 1936 and it was once a saloon, speakeasy, and Hollywood haunt for the likes of Humphrey Bogart and Marilyn Monroe.

In its current incarnation, it’s a boutique hotel property spread over three acres and organized around a sparkling central pool. Rooms feature mosaic tiles, colorful fabrics, Frette linens and robes, and many have fireplaces and claw-foot bathtubs. The Purple Palm restaurant sits right off the pool and the spa was recently redesigned. Colony Palms also made it onto our It List in 2022.

  • Location: Design District
  • Distance From Airport: 3 miles
  • Rates: From $238
  • Parking: Yes, $35
  • Pet Policy: Two dogs up to 40 pounds for an additional fee of $150 per pet, per stay.

“Easily walkable to downtown, this palm-lined oasis is the perfect place to relax in Palm Springs. A celeb hangout since the 1930s, it's the type of spot Frank Sinatra would (and did) escape to from the bright lights of Hollywood. It was fully renovated in 2021, earning it a spot on T+L's 2022 It List. I stayed in the unforgettable 3,500-square-foot Hermann Residence, a private villa with its own backyard and Jacuzzi, but the rooms and bungalows offer just as much desert glamor on a smaller scale.” –Nina Ruggiero, Senior Editorial Director

Holiday House

Zeke Ruelas Photo

The resort fee at this ultra-chic and walkable hotel includes continental breakfast plus the use of bicycles.

There are no TVs or phones in rooms, each room accommodates a maximum of two guests, and the whole property is non-smoking.

Originally opened in 1951, this 28-room downtown boutique hotel was styled by interior designer Mark D. Sikes and the team behind sister property Sparrows Lodge. The mid-century-influenced design elements all center around Gio Ponti-inspired tilework in the bar, where I enjoyed a lively brunch drinks date with my husband.

An impressive collection of artwork throughout the hotel includes works by David Hockney, Roy Liechtenstein, Herb Ritts, Alex Katz and Mr. Brainwash. There’s a communal atmosphere in the common spaces, and rooms feature Waterworks bath hardware and oversized showers, custom textiles, curated artwork, excellent selections in the mini bars, and Cowshed bath amenities. A simple continental breakfast is included in the resort fee, with homemade bread and pastries, fruit, yogurt, granola, cheese, and charcuterie. This property landed on our World’s Best Awards list in 2022 and 2023.

  • Location: Downtown Palm Springs
  • Distance From Airport:   2.5 miles from PSP
  • Accessibility: Accessible rooms are available.
  • Rates: From $164
  • Parking: Yes, free and available.
  • Pet Policy: Dogs under 40 pounds are welcome (on a leash outside of guest rooms) with a fee of $100 per stay.

Dive Palm Springs

This petite boutique hotel features whimsical touches (including a repurposed Parisian elevator cage from the belle époque) in its unique rooms and suites.

This small hotel is located near the convention center, but the area isn’t super walkable.

Located in Deepwell Estates (near the Palm Springs Convention Center), this hotel is as boutique-y as they come, with just 11 rooms. Inspired by the French Riviera of the 1960s, this property is only for the 21-and-up set. King rooms feature rattan beds covered with Belgian linen atop Tuft and Needle mattresses, plus furniture from Serena & Lily, Anthropologie, and L.A. designers, and rainfall showers and touch-lit mirrors.

Fashion illustrator Gabriella Fash created original wall murals and most rooms include an outdoor patio with an oversized daybed. The dreamy La Reve room has a queen-size brass bed plus custom wallpaper and a ceiling mural by Christian Lacroix. And the two-bedroom Paris suite transforms a 1919 belle époque brass and copper elevator cage from Paris into a queen bed.

  • Location: Deepwell Estates
  • Distance From Airport: 2.6 miles
  • Accessibility: Room 9 is available with a king bed. There’s designated parking in front of the lobby with ramp access.
  • Rates: From $254
  • Parking: Yes, ample self parking.
  • Pet Policy: Dogs up to 35 pounds each are welcome with a deposit of $250 per stay.

“Palm Springs is full of boutique hotels, and I've been to many of them. There's definitely a certain formula: one level, rooms surrounding a pool, bougainvillea-covered outdoor common areas. Dive fits that mold, but its chic St. Tropez-esque design makes it memorable. Truly, there may be no one doing better things with rattan.” –Nina Ruggiero, Senior Editorial Director

Avalon Palm Springs

This property is the perfect size – not too large or too small – and it’s easy to get around but with plentiful on-site amenities. Plus, the views around the main pool are Instagram gold.

While the property is technically family-friendly, you will get looks if your kids are being boisterous anywhere except the designated family pool. (We were once asked gently to relocate there — and the staffer kindly comped a round of drinks for our troubles.)

After one of my first visits to this property, I was so smitten with the whole vibe (in its former incarnation as the Viceroy) that I designed my wedding decor and motifs around it. I’ve been back many times since, and it always feels like home — the boutique hotel is somehow both impeccably manicured but also down to earth, with 70 Spanish-style lodgings, including studios and 13 private villas, with a residential feel nestled among three pools. Estrella spa and Chi Chi Restaurant round out the full suite of offerings.

  • Location: Downtown
  • Accessibility: Accessible room categories include premium king studio and one-bedroom suites.
  • Rates: $137
  • Parking: Valet parking is included in the resort fee for one vehicle per room. Additional cars will be charged $20 per night per car. Self-parking on the street is also available.
  • Pet Policy: Dogs are welcome with a $100 one-time, non-refundable cleaning fee (per pet). Two pets maximum with a maximum weight of 45 pounds per pet. With every pet stay, Avalon donates 10 percent of the pet fee to the Best Friends Animal Society.
  • Resort Fee : Yes

Parker Palm Springs

Also available to book at Expedia.com

The vibe at this high-design hotel feels sophisticated and posh, but I found that my twins were warmly welcomed here even when they were toddlers.

The $50 resort fee is higher than most, and it doesn’t include the $45 daily valet parking.

This mid-century gem is gorgeous and photogenic, with cheeky interiors designed by Jonathan Adler and a dramatic cinder block entrance wall that sets the scene for visual delights throughout the verdant property. The Parker features two pools (one for adults and one for families with kids) as well as two restaurants, a spa, salon, tennis courts, and fitness center. Accommodations range from standard rooms to spacious villas.

  • Location: Araby Cove area (South Palm Springs)
  • Distance From Airport: 2.7 miles
  • Accessibility: Accessible rooms with king or two double beds available.
  • Rates: From $319
  • Parking: Yes, valet only at $45 per day.
  • Pet Policy: Pets are permitted with a fee of $200 per night per pet.

Booking Tip

If you’re traveling with kids, ask for the corner room on the second floor of the main building; it’s got plenty of room to spread out.

“This Jonathan Adler-decorated hotel is what I’d want my villa in Palm Springs to look like — if I had one, that is. There wasn’t an area on the property that didn’t beg for photos to be taken, and there were little delights everywhere from a “Lemonade Stand” outdoor bar with a spot for an impromptu pétanque game to s’mores by the fire at night. The room itself was light and airy, sprinkled with accents from the acclaimed designer, and I still dream about the mirrored bathroom — best selfies ever! — with the most luxe array of toiletries including Hermès soap, Le Labo shampoo, Bulgari lotion, and even Aesop mouthwash.” –Morgan Ashley Parker, Associate Editorial Director, Commerce

JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa

Taylor McIntyre / Travel + Leisure

This sprawling, family-friendly resort has a lively atmosphere, and plenty of amenities including golf and mini golf, tennis, a spa, and even an on-site arcade.

This family-friendly hotel may not appeal as much to visitors without kids (use the spa pool with a treatment or day pass for a child-free experience).

Not every traveler is looking for an intimate boutique hotel experience, and this expansive Marriott checks the boxes for those seeking a full-service stay and a convivial atmosphere with tons of options to entertain the whole family. Mine thoroughly enjoyed our spring break stay here, and that’s a tall order for my ever-harder-to-please tweens.

The lush grounds feature peaceful waterways with a flock of flamingos, plus a lake on which guests can take serene boat rides. There are six restaurants offering a range of cuisines including the Japanese steakhouse Mikado, multiple pools, two championship golf courses, a tennis center and volleyball courts, and a jogging path. We enjoyed on-site activities like tie-dying T-shirts and organized lawn games. There’s even a large-scale on-site arcade that my kids (and OK — I, too) spent hours in and absolutely loved. The massive 38,000 square-foot spa has 48 individual treatment rooms and expansive co-ed spa areas great for a date day or girls trip; try the Mind Sync vibrational wellness chairs, too.

  • Location: Palm Desert
  • Distance From Airport: 11.5 miles
  • Accessibility: Accessible rooms and it’s a Certified Autism Center-designated property
  • Rates: From $237
  • Parking: Self parking is included, or valet parking is $45 per night.
  • Pet Policy: New as of April 2024, pets are now permitted with a non-refundable pet fee of $150 along with a $20 daily cleaning fee. Special dog amenities are given upon check-in.

Saguaro Palm Springs

The Saguaro Hotel

This super colorful hotel is so fun to look at and photograph, with a great Mexican restaurant and opportunities to score great deals.

The pool scene can be overwhelming, especially when holiday weekends bring DJs and a packed crowd. You will not find serenity (or a good spot around the pool) on these dates.

I’ve come here for everything from Coachella to bachelorette parties to date weekends with my husband; its rainbow-hued exterior and interior decor details are so fun and Instagrammable, and reasonable entry-level price points are available even sometimes in higher seasons. (You’ll occasionally find a deal under $100 here even as hotel room rates are soaring overall.) The Mexican restaurant and bar El Jefe has both a fun scene and delicious menu of tacos and more. Each colorful room has a private balcony or patio.

  • Accessibility: Accessible guest rooms are available
  • Rates: From $87
  • Parking: Self-parking only. One car is included in the resort fee; additional cars are subject to a $15 nightly fee.
  • Pet Policy: Dogs are allowed with a $50 fee and a signed waiver.

Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs

Laure Joliet

The Kimpton is eminently walkable and features the only rooftop pool in Palm Springs.

The downtown location can mean a noisy experience, and the pool is small compared to others in the desert.

With its downtown location anchoring the shopping and dining district The Block, this centrally-located hotel is easy walking distance to a variety of dining, shopping, and culture options, not to mention hiking trails. At seven stories tall, it’s a towering structure amid the desert’s low landscape, and features the city’s only rooftop pool and cabanas.

It also features the Michelin-recommended 4 Saints restaurant and other all-day dining options. All 153 airy, bright rooms and suites have either mountain views or private balconies. New in spring 2024 are six pickleball courts on site; play for guests is included with the resort fee. The Kimpton also landed on our World’s Best Awards list in 2021.

  • Distance From Airport: 2.4 miles
  • Accessibility: ADA-accessible rooms available with single king or double queen beds
  • Rates: From $389
  • Parking: Yes, complimentary valet and self-parking for hotel guests (included in daily resort fee).
  • Pet Policy: No pet restrictions; pets of all sizes and types stay for free

Know Before You Go

It can get pricey during high season.

High season in the Desert runs from December through April, and peak season can cause prices even for otherwise affordable hotels to soar exponentially. It also means vacancy rates are low, and on-the-spot bookings can be practically impossible during events like Coachella. So be sure to plan ahead and book far in advance. (Better deals are available in the summer season, for instance, when temperatures swelter.)

Consider renting a car

Palm Springs can be hard to get to without a car. And having access to one makes it much easier to get around, especially if you’re looking to visit nearby destinations like Joshua Tree National Park. (But if you’re staying right in downtown Palm Springs and plan to remain local, biking around town is feasible, and many hotels rent bikes as well.)

The weather varies dramatically by season

Though Palm Springs gets about 350 days of sunshine per year, it’s not always warm. Don’t expect pool weather in the winter, and bring layers as the desert nights and mornings can be cool. In the summer, temperatures regularly far exceed 100 degrees, and you’ll want to be prepared with plenty of SPF and water. If you’ll be heading up into the mountains during your stay, expect dramatically cooler temperatures at elevation. (I once enjoyed a hearty Christmas eve snowfall atop the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway with my family — a priceless, and cold, memory.)

How We Chose These Hotels

Alesandra Dubin is a travel and lifestyle journalist raised in and currently based in Southern California. She’s traveled to Palm Springs and its environs multiple times annually for two decades. The hotels on this list were chosen based on her own experience, expertise, and research as well as the firsthand accounts of Travel + Leisure editors and other contributors. Many of these hotels have also been voted into their respective categories in the World’s Best Awards by T+L readers. All of our hotel recommendations also align with our T+L Hotel Values .

In Kyoto, Five Hotels to Add to Your Travel Wish List

The city’s newest crop of hotels — from a luxury retreat on a historic estate to a 10-room inn surrounded by forested mountains — were worth the wait.

A bedroom with two low beds with white sheets and a joined inverse trapezoidal wooden headboard with two built-in side tables with small lamps.

By John Wogan

The pandemic lockdown in Japan coincided with a flurry of new hotels, especially in Kyoto, where the Park Hyatt, Aman and Four Seasons were joined by a group of independent properties and the first Ace hotel in the archipelago. When the country finally reopened to foreign visitors in October 2022, tourists came flooding back to the city of 800-year-old temples and bamboo forests spoiled for choice of accommodations, at a range of prices. The number continues to grow: Next month, the wellness-focused Six Senses brand will open its first Japanese outpost in the city’s Higashiyama district, home to many of the main tourist sites. Here, a look at five of Kyoto’s newer hotels that are redefining the city’s hospitality scene.

Hotel the Mitsui Kyoto

Andre Fu, the interior designer behind hotels like the Upper House in Hong Kong and Villa La Coste in Aix-en-Provence, France, has infused his signature aesthetic (extravagantly refined, with warm woods and luxurious textures) within the confines of a particularly historic area of Kyoto. The 161-room Mitsui, opened in late 2020, sits across from Nijo Castle, an enormous 17th-century compound and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s in stark contrast to the hotel, whose only timeworn element is an imposing entrance gate — a traditional wood structure over 300 years old and a remnant of the days when the Mitsui family lived on the grounds. Once past the gate, you’ll find a glass-and-steel building, designed by the Japanese architect Akira Kuryu, and landscaping that’s meant to echo the original garden pathways of the Mitsui residence, planted with cherry trees and steppingstones that meander above a glassy pond. The four food and drink venues include the French-Japanese Toki, overseen by the chef Tetsuya Asano (previously of the Ritz Paris), and the Garden Bar, strategically positioned to capture seasonal views, like the spring cherry blossoms and blazing autumnal foliage, out of massive double windows. Rooms from about $1,360 a night.

Ace Hotel Kyoto

The youthful Ace hotel brand might seem like an odd fit in staid Kyoto. But this 213-room property, which opened in 2020, fits seamlessly into the city center thanks to a collaboration between the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and the California-based design firm Commune. Kuma, who designed the Japan National Stadium (the centerpiece of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics), renovated the imposing 1920s-era, red brick Kyoto Central Telephone Office, while adding an industrial-looking building — sheathed in copper sulfide plating, cedar, glass and concrete — next door. Commune infused the guest rooms with Ace’s signature mix of bright colors and patterns: original dyed prints from the Japanese folk artist Samuro Yunoki sit alongside Tivoli radios, turntables and vintage records. The most popular part of the hotel, though, might be the street-level branch of Stumptown Coffee Roasters — the first in Japan. From about $300 a night.

Arashiyama House Mama

Like Kyoto’s dozens of temple gardens, this 10-room property offers an immediate sense of calm. Its entrance is so discreet, you could easily miss it. (Look for the flowing white cloth curtain with simple black signage, behind which is a garden path leading to a minimalist building made of wood, concrete and glass.) The hotel’s location informs the interior design: Thirty minutes west of central Kyoto, the Arashiyama district is defined by nature, with the Katsura River at its center, and filled with bamboo groves and surrounded by forested mountains. Guest rooms are simply furnished with beds, chairs and tables handmade by both Kyoto artisans and the Danish furniture maker Carl Hansen & Son, and each one has a soaking tub. Rooms from about $540 a night.

The Shinmonzen

The Gion district epitomizes Kyoto for many visitors, with its maze of narrow alleys and ryokans, traditional Japanese inns. It’s here, on a quiet side street among artists’ studios, antique shops and galleries, that the Shinmonzen opened in December 2021. Although it’s a new build, the aim was for the hotel to blend in with the surrounding structures. To accomplish this, the famed Japanese architect Tadao Ando created a wooden facade that replicates a machiya , one of the venerable townhouses found throughout Kyoto. There are only nine guest rooms, but they’re unusually spacious, and all have balconies with views of the Shirakawa River. Each one is an ode to Japanese interior elements, furnished with tatami mats, shoji (panels lined with rice paper) and cypress soaking tubs. And for dining, the chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, whose restaurant empire spans the world, devised a menu blending French, American and Asian influences, sourcing much of the produce from local farms. Rooms from about $1,500 a night.

Maana Kiyomizu

A three-suite hotel near the 16th-century Toyokuni Shrine, Maana Kiyomizu is the latest offering from Maana Homes, the small local hospitality group, which operates two other properties in the city. This one, opened in the winter of 2022, is located in Higashiyama, and is a complex of four machiya that also houses POJ Studio — a boutique that sells artisanal Japanese crafts and home goods. There’s also Kissa Kishin, the second branch of a popular Gion cafe, which serves coffee, matcha and pastries and acts as the unofficial social center for the property. The Japanese architects Uoya Shigenori and Takeshi Ikei renovated the suites to create a minimalist wabi-sabi ideal of city living, where handmade pottery from Shigaraki (a town famous for its ceramics) are the only decorative flourishes to be found. Rooms from about $560 a night.

'Expensive in every way': What travelers should expect this summer

Summer travel in 2024 will be "expensive in every way," said Katharine Nohr. And she should know.

She's planning a two-week adventure to Europe in June, which starts with a marathon flight from Honolulu to Zurich, where she'll speak at a conference. Then, she's hopscotching across Europe – to Vienna, then on to the Olympics. Nohr made plans to be in Nantes, France, to watch a soccer game, in Lille for basketball, and in Paris for gymnastics, boxing, and swimming.

Check out   Elliott Confidential , the newsletter the travel industry doesn't want you to read. Each issue is filled with breaking news, deep insights, and exclusive strategies for becoming a better traveler. But don't tell anyone!

All told, it'll set her back five figures despite her best efforts, which include flying economy class and staying in the lowest-priced hotels.

"The trip is pricey, even with my efforts to economize," said Nohr, an attorney from Honolulu. "But it's a once-in-my-life adventure."

Flying cars are coming! Here's how they could change the way you travel.

'Flying feels different': Here's how air travel has changed recently

Summer travelers are pursuing exciting, expensive vacations

Nohr is part of a wave of travelers who are making big plans for this summer. The itineraries are exciting – and expensive.

Pretty much every barometer of travel intent is up for the summer travel season. Inflation and unemployment are low, and consumer sentiment and curiosity are high, fueling an unprecedented interest in travel during the summer of 2024.

"Bookings are rising," said Susan Sherren, who runs Couture Trips , a travel agency. "Unfortunately, hotel, tour, and air prices are not falling. So, if you plan on hitting the road this summer, make sure you are willing to splash some cash."

Travel companies say they're overwhelmed with summer reservations.

"The travel economy is booming," said Joe Ialacci, owner of Yacht Hampton Boating Club , a company that rents yachts in Sag Harbor, New York. He's seeing a 40% increase in rentals this summer compared to last year as Americans shift some of their vacation dollars to domestic destinations.

Prices aren't the only thing trending higher. People's expectations for their summer vacation are also higher than at any time since the pandemic, said Sangeeta Sadarangani, CEO of Crossing , a multinational travel agency headquartered in London.

"They're embracing the unknown," she said.

And one of the great unknowns is travel prices. How much higher will they be?

What will prices be like this summer?

It depends on where you're going. There's good news if you're traveling within the U.S.: flights and hotels are a little less expensive than last summer . But they're rising elsewhere. Here's the breakdown:

  • Airfares are mixed. Domestic roundtrip airfares for summer will peak at $315 per ticket, according to the travel platform Hopper . Flights to Europe are cheaper, too. They've fallen 10% from last year to $882. But flights to South America are up 2% and flights to Canada have risen 7%. You'll pay an average of $708 to fly south of the border and $419 to head north.
  • U.S. hotel rates are down. Domestically, they're about the same as last year at an average of $206 per night.
  • Car rental prices are rising. Average domestic car rental rates are only up 3% this summer to $42 per day on a four-day rental, according to Hopper.

But you can avoid the high prices with a little strategic planning, experts say.

What to avoid this summer

American travelers are becoming more predictable in their summer vacation choices, said John Lovell, president of Travel Leaders Group . Immediately after the pandemic, they embarked on "revenge" vacations to far-flung locations. Now they're returning to more conventional vacations.

"We continue to see U.S. travelers heading back to the more traditional locations across Europe this year, like London, Rome, Athens and Munich," he said.

There are places that will be exceptionally busy – and exceptionally pricey – this summer.

  • Paris during the Olympics. The Olympic Games are taking place in Paris this summer. Rooms are more than double the normal rates . which is typical of the Olympics. Paris is already crowded with tourists during the summer, so you can probably imagine what it will be like with the Olympics. Zut, alors!
  • Taylor Swift is touring Europe this summer. Prices will be higher and the crowds will be denser. "If you aren't planning to attend one of her concerts, I recommend planning around those European cities when she's there," said Betsy Ball, co-founder of Euro Travel Coach . (Want to know if your schedules overlap? Here's Taylor Swift's concert schedule .)
  • Other big summer events. Even if you steer clear of Taylor and the Olympics, you're still not out of the woods. There's the UEFA Euro 2024 football tournament in Germany in June. There's the Tour de France in July, which begins in Florence and finishes in Nice. France is also hosting the Paralympic Games in August and September, which will take place in Paris, Nice, Marseille and Bordeaux.

Air travel smells worse than ever. Here's how to fix it.

Pay less to fly: New strategies for finding cheap airfares now

When is the best time to book a 2024 summer vacation?

Since this is going to be a busy one, the sooner you book, the better. Hopper recommends buying your airfare two to three months before your departure for domestic flights, and for international – well, it's probably too late to get that rock-bottom fare. If you're reading this in April, you can still find something for late August or early September, according to its airfare experts.

As always, you can save money by booking a flight for midweek instead of on the weekend – and, of course, by keeping far, far away from the big travel holidays like Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day.

Also, if you're going overseas, remember their holiday calendar is different. For example, half of Europe shuts down during August for summer vacation. It's worth a look-up, otherwise, you could face some real disappointments.

Strategies for traveling better during the summer

One tactic that consistently works is splitting your getaway into two sections. Take that required summer vacation with your family somewhere less expensive during the high season. Then, wait until shoulder season for the big trip.

That's what Ross Copas, a retired electrician from Tweed, Canada, is doing during the summer of 2024. It's a road trip across the northern U.S. by motorcycle – New York to Washington State, and then back east through Canada.

Then he's heading to Amsterdam in September for a 23-day European river cruise. He said the late summer getaway will be costly, but he doubts fares will fall anytime soon. "So price be damned," he added.

Actually, that's pretty smart. I took the same cruise he's planning on Viking River Cruises many years ago, and it was worth every penny.

With hotel rates rising in some places this summer, this is the right time to consider alternatives. Monica Fish, a writer from Glen Rock, N.J., is headed to Ireland to catch one of Taylor Swift's performances. She said hotel rooms in Dublin are overpriced if they're even available. But Fish found an affordable vacation rental.

"We just had to book it farther in advance than we normally would," she said.

Go ahead, follow the crowds this summer

I think it's fine to follow the crowds this summer. I'll be doing it. I'm planning to rent an apartment for a month in Switzerland with Blueground, a long-term apartment rental company. Then I'm crashing on a friend's sofa in Spain, then heading to Sweden to see other friends and visiting my brother in Finland. Yes, travel writers know people everywhere .

But don't follow the crowds off a cliff. There are places even I won't go. I might take the four-hour train trip from Zurich to Paris in June to check out my favorite patisseries, but I wouldn't go anywhere near the City of Lights during the summer games in July unless I made a reservation a long time ago.

And Taylor Swift? Puh-leeze. I'm more of a jazz guy.

On April 8, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide revealed the brand new One, Two, and Three Key distinctions for the most outstanding hotels in France.

This announcement comes four years into a comprehensive refresh of our hotel selection. The MICHELIN Guide now includes over 5,000 hotels across the world, and not a single one is simply a room for the night. These are places that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting. Which brings us back to the Keys. The culmination of countless hours of evaluation by our team of experts, the Key hotels below represent the highlights of our broader selection. Like the MICHELIN Stars for restaurants, the MICHELIN Keys are our most outstanding hotels. In total, the 2024 MICHELIN Guide hotel selection in France includes 24 Three Key hotels, 38 Two Key hotels, and 127 One Key hotels. Want to know more about the MICHELIN Key? Canoeist stands lakeside in Dalsland, West Sweden, from where you can canoe across the lake to uninhabited Björken island.

Swede dreams are made of this: wild swimming and forest walks in West Sweden

Dissolving into nature is possible in West Sweden, where a new holiday concept offers low-impact stays that don’t compromise on Scandi style

A s I slip off the jetty into the chilly water of Lagmanshagasjön, the world loses all distinction. Low mist blurs everything; I can’t see where the lake ends and the sky begins. It is like breaststroking into a silvery infinity. I haven’t bothered with swimwear. Between the tannin-dark water and early morning brume, I can barely see myself, let alone be seen. And dissolving into nature feels delicious: wearing nothing and seeing nothing, I am feeling everything.

TRAVEL West Sweden (1)

I eventually climb out (flashing an unsuspecting heron), dress quickly and walk back to my “room” – a dazzling cabin made of glass hidden among mossy mounds, blueberry bushes and pine trees. Before long, Katarina arrives with a basket of home-baked sourdough and local cheese. She leaves, and I eat in a silence so loud it seems to vibrate.

That’s partly because I’m well off the tourist trail in Västergötland (West Gotland). Though that may change with places to stay as lovely as this. I’m at Erikson Cottage , a fourth-generation family farm two hours east of Gothenburg . It is a perfect marriage of Swedish taste and sustainability, with three greenhouse-like cabins scattered around the grounds. It’s run by sisters Elisabeth and Katarina, and everything is just so: from the lovely linen to the hygge-ness of Elisabeth’s bakery-cafe – all fresh flowers, candlelight and coffee in handmade mugs.

But there’s substance to the style. The glasshouses are off-grid, and if lifted away would leave no trace. The site has solar panels and its own well. Food is mostly from local suppliers, the bread made with heritage grains. There’s an EV charging point and two nearby train stations from which guests can be picked up.

In a wooded environment sits an off-grid glass cabin, part of the Erikson Cottage family farm two hours from Gothenburg.

Activities on offer at the farm are low-impact, too. Guests can swim (naked or otherwise), kayak and paddleboard out on the lake, walk in the forest and learn to make pizza.

“But 90% of guests do nothing,” says Elisabeth. “They read, lie in bed, read some more. They enjoy slowing down.”

Which is, increasingly, what West Sweden is all about.

In 2021 West Sweden launched Stepping Up Sustainability, a tourism programme looking to minimise the industry’s environmental footprint. But it’s more than a nice green manifesto: West Sweden has put its morals where its money was. The tourist board has ceased marketing to North America and Asia, instead focusing on domestic and European travellers who don’t have to fly from far away. Or even fly at all (I travelled by train).

Then, last year, the region launched “climate smart holidays”, a tourism industry initiative working with a handful of low-carbon accommodation providers to create experience-rich itinerary ideas for exploring western Sweden. The places to stay are between 0.2kg and 1.5kg CO2-equivalent per person per night; the average Swedish hotel creates 6.8kg. (Erikson Cottage scores 0.3kg.) Which is all great, but could be boringly worthy if they weren’t also exceptional places.

I drive to Erikson Cottage in an electric car as part of a tour of several of West Sweden’s climate-smart spots. After a few days of green-chic forest living, I head north, into the land between two huge lakes, Vättern and Vänern, for something different.

Lugnåsberget Ekohotell is a guesthouse converted from a 19th-century farm on one of West Gothland’s hills. Indeed, I barely realise it is on a hill at all until Pia Åkesson, co-owner of the Ekohotell, takes me into its bowels.

The bedrock below the hotel – 1.5bn-year-old gneiss – is especially suitable for making millstones, which people have been doing here since the 12th century. I walk the Stonecutter’s Trail and find the scars of old quarries (about 600 were dug here) and millstones scattered like loose change.

Once a farm, now a hotel, the garden area of Lugnåsberget Ekohotell in West Sweden.

Then Pia leads me into Minnesfjället, one of the area’s mines, now a small museum. She sweeps her torch across the floor: smooth round holes, like cookies cut from pastry, show where men had hacked out the stones using simple picks. Next, she raises her light to the ceiling: “Here you have the first life on Earth – animals that lived 540m years ago.”

We are essentially looking up at an ancient sea floor, left rippled by waves and flecked with fossils of brachiopods and trilobites. “The miners called them planets, moons and stars,” says Pia. They didn’t know, or care, how rare and extraordinary they were. They were too busy trying to extract a livelihood.

after newsletter promotion

This is what Pia and her partner Jesper Persson are doing. “There’s no tradition of B&Bs here,” Jesper says, back at the Ekohotell, over homemade cinnamon buns. “But we long dreamed of having a hostel, and we wanted to show people there are different ways of living.”

For this couple, sustainability isn’t a fad – it’s fundamental. Their solar panels generate more energy than the Ekohotell uses, and produce for the kitchen comes from the couple’s own smallholding or local farms. I plug my car into the on-site charger, but there’s a train station a few miles away, on the scenic Kinnekulle Line. Best of all, guests who stay here, exploring the surrounding biosphere reserve , are pumping money into this little-visited region.

My next stop is in Dalsland, a province between the west bank of Vänern lake and the Norwegian border. It is awash with lakes but has few people. Swedish Country Living , a stylish group of “hermitages” and holiday cottages, looks fresh from a photoshoot, which, as owners Marie and David Naraine previously worked in fashion, is perhaps no surprise. My cabin, the Slate House Hermitage, looks plucked from a fairytale: a little gingerbread home with smoke twirling from the chimney.

Interior, with lit woodburner, at one of Swedish Country Living’s ‘hermitage’ cottages in West Sweden.

But it isn’t just good-looking. It was handmade using wood felled on site, recycled slate tiles and salvaged antique doors and windows, and insulated with wool from the Naraines’ sheep. The shower block runs on a circular system that takes water from the lake, purifies it after use, then pumps it back into the lake. Waste from the toilet becomes compost for the permaculture garden or feed for the apple trees.

David also used to be a chef, and his food – the lamb he rears, goodies from the veg patch – is delicious. There are pilgrim trails and nature reserves on the doorstep. And guests are free to use the lake as they choose.

One day I borrow a canoe. These waterways are sleepy now, the domain of ducks and reeds. So it’s hard to fathom that this was once a trade highway, part of the Dalsland Canal system, linking Lake Vänern with the North Sea. There are no other vessels in sight as I paddle over to uninhabited Björkon island, hauling ashore at the remains of an 18th-century shipyard.

I have the place to myself and spend a while exploring the ruins amid the toadflax and wild strawberries. I clamber through the overgrown dry dock where, a sign reveals, the 28-metre schooner Clara was constructed in 1867. And I sit on a stone slab – part of the old forge, maybe? – trying to imagine the hubbub when Clara set sail for the Black Sea.

Eventually I paddle back. I can see smoke coming from Swedish Country Living’s outdoor spa, the hot tub – hidden discreetly behind the reeds – being fired up for my return. But I am in no rush. I’ve slowed down to West Sweden speed.

The trip was provided by the West Sweden tourist board and Sustainable Journeys . Eri kson Cottage ’s 48-hour package is £ 563 (7,500 krona) for two , including breakfasts and dinner s. Doubles at Lugnåsberget Ekohotell from £1 19 for two nights. A two-night package at Swedish Country Living is £79 6 for two, full board . Unsurprisingly, given Milan's grandeur and luxury, there's no shortage of hotels of all calibres to match the metropolis' renowned reputation. From hidden natural havens tucked away in the city centre, to rooftop pool bars and outdoor courtyards which feature Michelin restaurants, there's something for everyone.

Whether you're planning a quick cityscape or a week away for Milan fashion week , here are the very best hotels in the city.

Best For Foodies: Mandarin Oriental

For a true taste of Italian opulence, the Mandarin Oriental is a surefire option. As you marvel through the hotel, 1940s Milanese interior décor cascades through each of the establishment's four elegant 18th Century buildings.

Elegance and taste isn't just confined to the hotel's design, however. Guests can dine at two outdoor courtyards; at the two-Michelin-starred restaurant Seta or the Mandarin Garden, which hosts dedicated lunch and dinner menus and an array of signature cocktails.

To help soak it all in, why not visit the spa , which comes with six treatment rooms, a hair salon, a gym and the city centre's largest indoor swimming pool?

Indulging in complete glamour isn't done quite like a stay at Milan's Bulgari hotel. Situated in the modish district of Via Montenapoleone, you'll find this five-star haven quietly tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city's epicentre.

Known for its lustrous contemporary interiors, what comes as a surprise is the hotel's large private garden - a rare find in central Milan. Continuing the tranquility, guests can lounge by the gold-tiled pool, or work up a sweat in their world-class gymnasium.

A staple boutique hotel in Milan, Room Mate Guilia's uniqueness is thanks to the Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola, who found her inspiration from 1960s Milanese residences. All across the building, her artistic eye can be seen through the designer furniture and vintage pink, green and blue interiors.

Enjoy a slower pace of travel and make the most of the hotel's late breakfast, which is served until noon. Elsewhere guests have access to a 24/7 gym, as well as a treatment room, steam room and sauna.

Terrorists attacked Moscow. Now Russia’s migrants are feeling the backlash.

  • Deep Read ( 5 Min. )
  • By Fred Weir Special correspondent

April 11, 2024 | Moscow

The terrorist attack at a concert in Moscow’s Crocus City Hall March 22 has jolted Russian society and created a nightmare for Russia’s estimated 2 million migrant workers.

That’s especially true for the more than half-million Tajik workers – a nationality shared by most of the suspects arrested so far.

Why We Wrote This

Russia’s migrants have long been tolerated by both authorities and the public. But when several Tajiks became suspects in the March 22 attack in Moscow, the whole community came under withering scrutiny.

Russian security experts have long worried that if the United States left Afghanistan and the Taliban took over, the Islamist insurgencies that seemed banished for two decades would come roaring back. Tajiks and Uzbeks are substantial ethnic minorities in Afghanistan. Last month’s attack revealed that terrorist networks can infiltrate Russia’s migration system with relative ease.

Ilkhomiddin, a Tajik factory worker, says he’s worried that the social backlash to the attack might make life for his family intolerable.

“After that terrorist attack, people have started to accuse Tajiks,” he says in a phone interview. “I have a Tajik friend who was evicted from his apartment because his landlord decided he might be a terrorist. When I go out shopping with my kids, I notice the unfriendly stares of some people. What can we do?”

Life in Russia has never been easy, says Gazali Kukanshoyev. But life in his native Tajikistan is much more difficult.

That’s why he came to Russia as a student 30 years ago, and after working in various jobs, he eventually acquired citizenship. Now Mr. Kukanshoyev runs his own business and volunteers to help less fortunate migrant workers adjust to Russia’s labyrinthine bureaucratic rules, capricious police, and unsympathetic social environment.

Since he arrived decades ago, the government has made it progressively easier for migrants to come and work, and even earn citizenship. Though rules have remained murky, corruption rife, and migrants vulnerable to unscrupulous employers and authorities, the situation has seemed stable and, for most, generally bearable.

That changed with the mass-casualty terrorist attack at a concert in Moscow’s Crocus City Hall March 22.

The attack has jolted Russian society out of a two-decade-long bubble of complacency, pressured authorities to deliver on promised public security, and created a nightmare for Russia’s estimated 2 million migrant workers. That’s especially true for the more than half-million Tajik workers – a nationality shared by most of the suspects arrested so far.

“After this event we see more police raids on places of work, hostels, and residences” targeting migrant workers from Central Asia, Mr. Kukanshoyev says. “If someone’s documents are not completely in order, they will be immediately deported.”

“I notice the unfriendly stares”

Travel by land and air between Russia and the former Soviet states is generally easy and visa-free. When in Russia, workers need to obtain a specific type of work permit that is only good for one industry in a particular region. That has given rise to a good deal of corrupt document-fixing, which leaves workers vulnerable to police pressure.

Accommodation requires a difficult-to-obtain registration in Russian cities, and that has given rise to illegal hostels where migrants live in a kind of legal limbo, even if their work documents are good.

Last month’s attack revealed that this system, which provides cheap labor for vital economic sectors such as construction and the service industry , is also a human pipeline that terrorist networks can infiltrate with relative ease.

Russian security experts have long worried that if the United States left Afghanistan and the Taliban took over, the Islamist insurgencies that seemed banished for two decades would come roaring back. Tajiks and Uzbeks are substantial ethnic minorities in Afghanistan. Borders in the region are porous, and Central Asian regimes, though autocracies, are extremely weak .

According to media reports, thousands of migrant workers in several Russian cities were arrested and deported in the first week following March 22. Tajikistan’s ministry of labor reported that the influx of citizens returning to the country from Russia was much bigger than the outflow , saying, “Our citizens [in Russia] are fearful. There is panic. Many want to leave.”

travel and accommodation

The Russian authorities’ immediate reaction, besides cracking down on undocumented workers, has been to create a new “migration agency” to better regulate the flow of people and streamline the rules.

Ilkhomiddin, a Tajik factory worker in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg who doesn’t want to give his family name, says that after many years of working legally in Russia and overcoming many difficulties, he’s worried that the social backlash to the attack might make life for his family intolerable.

“After that terrorist attack, people have started to accuse Tajiks,” he says in a phone interview. “I tell them, ‘Don’t blame a whole nation of 10 million people for the acts of a few.’ But it happens. I have a Tajik friend who was evicted from his apartment because his landlord decided he might be a terrorist. When I go out shopping with my kids, I notice the unfriendly stares of some people. What can we do?”

The danger of Russia’s “rah-rah patriots”

The police raids on residences and workplaces are the worst in a long time, but they have been a cyclical feature of life for migrant communities, and tend to die down after a demonstration has been made.

A bigger fear – one shared by migrant groups and the Kremlin alike – is that the shock of Islamist terrorism may arouse the specter of Russian ethnic nationalism and destroy the relative comity that has prevailed in Russian society until now.

Though ethnic Slavs make up about three-quarters of Russia’s population, there are substantial numbers of other groups concentrated in 20 ethnic republics, and about 20% of the country’s indigenous population is culturally Muslim. There have been a few, relatively minor racially tinged incidents in the past , but Russian cities have remained overwhelmingly stable, safe, and peaceful.

Mr. Kukanshoyev is afraid that those days are over. “There are a number of new groupings, such as Russkaya Obchshina, who have appeared recently,” he says. “They get together, beat migrants, and place videos of those beatings on YouTube. The migrant community is powerless against such attacks.”

The incidents to which he refers are still few, but the fast-growing groups of vigilante-like Russian “self-protection” organizations are very real.

Russkaya Obchshina (Russian Community), which claims to have 90,000 members, declines to talk directly with foreign journalists. But in a manifesto posted on YouTube , the group’s coordinator, Andrei Tkachuk, says, “We want Russian people to create their own communities in every city and every town. We are just Russians who are uniting to help each other. Now Russians find themselves alone with their problems. ... We are protecting the interests of every Russian where our state cannot cope.”

Much of what Mr. Tkachuk describes, such as counseling troubled schoolchildren or delivering supplies to Russian troops at the front, sounds like standard patriotic voluntarism to which the Kremlin would not object. But some of the activities advertised on the group’s social media channels, such as organizing to protect Russian businesses that are “under threat” and military-style weapons training, will likely set off alarm bells.

While such groups raise the specter of interethnic conflict in Russia, they also threaten to create new independent power structures that run parallel to the existing ones – which would undermine the Kremlin’s authority and influence. The Kremlin will likely respond to this challenge by attempting to co-opt these groups, and channel their patriotic zeal into politically acceptable activities.

At a recent meeting with security officials , President Vladimir Putin warned against what he called “rah-rah patriots.”

“It is unacceptable to use the recent tragedy to incite ethnic discord, xenophobia, Islamophobia and the like,” he said. “Actually, the main goal of the terrorists and their masterminds was to sow discord and panic, conflict, and hatred in our country, to split Russia from within. It is their main objective. We must not allow them to achieve it under any circumstances.”

Experts say resurgent Russian ethnic nationalism is a tiger the Kremlin will probably manage to ride, at least for the foreseeable future. But the lives of migrant workers will likely grow more difficult.

“Every day there are new measures to limit and control migrants,” says Alexander Verkhovsky, head of the Moscow Sova Center, which monitors extremist trends. “What we don’t see is any measures to control the nationalists.”

We want to hear, did we miss an angle we should have covered? Should we come back to this topic? Or just give us a rating for this story. We want to hear from you.

Dear Reader,

About a year ago, I happened upon this statement about the Monitor in the Harvard Business Review – under the charming heading of “do things that don’t interest you”:

“Many things that end up” being meaningful, writes social scientist Joseph Grenny, “have come from conference workshops, articles, or online videos that began as a chore and ended with an insight. My work in Kenya, for example, was heavily influenced by a Christian Science Monitor article I had forced myself to read 10 years earlier. Sometimes, we call things ‘boring’ simply because they lie outside the box we are currently in.”

If you were to come up with a punchline to a joke about the Monitor, that would probably be it. We’re seen as being global, fair, insightful, and perhaps a bit too earnest. We’re the bran muffin of journalism.

But you know what? We change lives. And I’m going to argue that we change lives precisely because we force open that too-small box that most human beings think they live in.

The Monitor is a peculiar little publication that’s hard for the world to figure out. We’re run by a church, but we’re not only for church members and we’re not about converting people. We’re known as being fair even as the world becomes as polarized as at any time since the newspaper’s founding in 1908.

We have a mission beyond circulation, we want to bridge divides. We’re about kicking down the door of thought everywhere and saying, “You are bigger and more capable than you realize. And we can prove it.”

If you’re looking for bran muffin journalism, you can subscribe to the Monitor for $15. You’ll get the Monitor Weekly magazine, the Monitor Daily email, and unlimited access to CSMonitor.com.
