How to catch the Gozo Ferry to get to Malta’s sister island

Getting to Gozo is easy by using the Malta to Gozo ferry (also referred to as the Ċirkewwa ferry) or one of the Gozo fast ferry services.

The main one departs from Ċirkewwa (at the Northernmost part of Malta) and sails to and from Gozo (in around 20 minutes) up to 74 times every day of the week. The fast ferry services offer dozens of daily crossings taking roughly 45 minutes from Valletta.

In this article, I’ll tell you everything you need to know about how to catch the Gozo ferry, what the options are, cost, timing, tips, and more!

The main Gozo ferry is run by the Gozo Channel Line, which operates four ships and operates a daily ferry service that carries both passengers and vehicles between the two main islands.

You’ll be able to find a ferry at almost every hour of the day, from early morning till late at night all year round. They run trips as frequently as every 30 minutes during peak times.

The ferry sails between Ċirkewwa (all the way up north in Malta) and Mġarr (a small harbour on the southeast coast of Gozo Island ), and a crossing takes just around 20-25 minutes (one way). You can board the ferry as a passenger on foot, but you can also take a (rental) car on board. (And there are no extra car rental fees for driving in Gozo.)

Embarkation and disembarkation are simple and smooth, and in fair weather, the short trip to Gozo is a pretty pleasant one. You can find a seat indoors and relax or enjoy the fresh air on the sides of the main deck or the top deck. Ensure to keep your camera handy during the crossing – the scenery is breathtaking, including views of Comino.

You can also use the Gozo Highspeed ferry service that runs from Valletta but carries only foot passengers.

This guide offers you detailed information on both ferry routes in Malta .

How to get to the ferry terminal at Ċirkewwa

To be able to catch the Gozo ferry, first, you need to get to the Ferry Terminal in Ċirkewwa.

These are the most commonly used transport options:

Getting to Ċirkewwa by bus

Using the Malta Public Transport bus is an efficient way to get to Ċirkewwa. It’s very economical but not very fast. The following bus routes can take you to the Ċirkewwa Ferry Terminal from various towns and villages across Malta: 41, 42, 101, 221, 222, X1 and X1A. If you take a bus from Valletta, it will take you around an hour to get there.

From Malta International Airport , you can also catch the X1 bus directly to Ċirkewwa. The trip takes approximately 1 hour and 15 min. A one-way bus ticket costs just €2.

More detailed info here: How to get from Malta Airport to Gozo .

Take a taxi to Ċirkewwa

You can find taxis just outside the Airport terminal or from Valletta. A trip to Ċirkewwa with a standard taxi costs around €45 / £39 / $49 and will take you around 45 mins.

Welcome Pickups is my recommended provider of taxi airport transfers, and both make it easy and comfortable to get to the Ferry Terminal.

Rent your own car in Malta

Renting a car in Malta is a good option when you want to uncover all the secrets the island has to offer. You might, for example, want to visit hidden, more secluded beaches like the ones I mention in my article on the Best Beaches in Gozo .

Gozo Ferry tickets and prices

The way the ticketing works confuses some people, but it’s very straightforward: When you board the ship in Ċirkewwa, you do not need to collect/pay for a ticket. The fare for the trip is paid on your return.

If you’re a foot passenger, you’ll need to purchase tickets at the passenger terminal in Mġarr Harbour, while vehicular traffic has to pass through ticket booths to pay the fare and join the ferry queue for embarkation.

Here’s an overview of ticket prices:

Embarkation at the Ċirkewwa ferry terminal

The embarkation process is different depending on whether you are a foot passenger or coming with your vehicle.

Embarkation for foot passengers

Once you enter the Ċirkewwa ferry terminal, you arrive at a hall with an information desk, a waiting room, toilets and a cafeteria in the back. This cafe is an ideal place to sit and wait for the ferry while sipping a coffee and enjoying great views.

As mentioned before, you don’t need to buy a ticket there, nor show your documents. Just wait for the signal from the staff to start boarding, then climb the stairs or take the escalator and walk a corridor to the ferry gate.

Embarkation with a car

If you are driving a car, you don’t have to enter the Ċirkewwa ferry terminal, nor buy any ticket. Tickets are to be bought on the way back to Malta (see previous section). As you make your way toward the terminal, you will find lines on the floor where vehicles waiting to board queue.

Try to arrive in advance to the Malta to Gozo ferry to secure a spot onboard, as the waiting lines get very busy on weekends and public holidays.

A steward will show you where you should stop and wait. Boarding is by lines.

Once you enter the ferry, turn off the engine and climb the stairs to the main deck (you can’t stay in your vehicle for safety reasons, plus it would be a shame not to enjoy the great views during the crossing).

Gozo Fast Ferry services

If you don’t need to take a car to Gozo, you can also take one of the Gozo fast ferry services from Valletta. That can save you some time if you’re staying in or East of Valletta, and even in St. Julian’s or Sliema, since you can cross over to Valletta with the Valletta ferry easily. You will have to cross over to the other side of Valletta, though (with a 15-minute walk).

Two operators run this service with the same fares and with similar vessels: Virtu Ferries Gozo and Gozo Fast Ferry. They have merged into one service called Gozo Highspeed. The schedule runs at nearly hourly intervals both ways. The earliest trip is at 5.45 am, the last from Gozo at 9.45 pm or 10.45 pm (Sat-Sun only). The schedule can change according to the season. Crossings take a little under 45 minutes.

The vessels in use by these operators are of a high standard, with comfortable seats and a small cafeteria on board.

The dock used by both operators is located on the East side of Valletta, across the road from Ta Liesse church and right next to the Three Cities ferry dock. Taxis are usually stationed nearby to offer arriving passengers a ride.

Pros and cons of Gozo fast ferry services

Are you considering taking the Gozo fast ferry but are still not sure if it’s the best option for you? Here are the pros and cons of the service to help you decide.

  • Saves you time if you are staying in Valletta or around.
  • Avoids the hassle of getting to Ċirkewwa by bus or taxi (especially if you don’t drive).
  • You can carry one luggage piece per person (must not exceed H 50cms x W 40cms x L 80cms (170 linear cms)) plus an additional piece of personal hand luggage and bring your pet.
  • You can’t board a car or a motorbike, but only a bicycle or e-bike.
  • Passengers must remain seated (except to go to the toilets or the cafeteria) and don’t have access to an upper deck. On the contrary, one of the best things with Gozo Channel is to spend the crossing on the upper deck, get some fresh air (great if you tend to feel nauseous) and enjoy beautiful views of Comino and the coasts of Malta and Gozo.
  • The crossing for foot passengers is more expensive than Gozo Channel if you compare prices.

Arriving in Gozo

Once you arrive in Gozo (at Mġarr Harbour) you will need some form of transport to make the most of your stay. Gozo is a tiny island, just 67 km² (26 sq miles), and probably the best way to discover its most secret places is if you drive yourself.

Nevertheless, have a look at the options listed below to find the one(s) best suited to your needs.

Gozo by Bus

Malta Public Transport operates 16 bus routes on the second Maltese island. Once you make the crossing, you can take a bus from Mġarr Harbour to other villages in Gozo.

However, all routes depart and terminate at Victoria (Gozo) . So if, for example, you want to reach Marsalforn from Mġarr Harbour, you’ll have to take one bus to Victoria and hop on another to get to Marsalforn. As you can see, it’s not the most efficient service, but it gets you from A to B, and it’s cheap.

When using the bus service on the island of Gozo, you can travel using the same bus cards and tickets used in Malta. The 301 between Victoria (Rabat) and the ferry terminal operates every 30 minutes on average.

Gozo by Car

Hiring a car in Gozo gives you by far the most flexibility to get around on the island. Driving in Gozo is very easy, with hardly any traffic (apart from the main road leading to Victoria from the South at times). Parking is also much less of a headache than it can be in Malta.

Gozo by Taxi

Taxis are an option, but they are much more expensive than driving yourself around. You can easily grab a taxi at the ferry terminal on arrival. Bolt also operates on-demand taxi rides via a mobile app as well.

See the best sights on a day trip by Tuk-tuk or Quad Bike

Get a taste of Gozo by visiting some of the best sightseeing highlights, from landmarks to natural beauty, churches, and other historic buildings, with a fun mode of transport that can take you to places regular tour buses can’t: a Malta-styled Tuk Tuk or a Quad Bike.

A renowned local touring company with great reviews operates both tours, which are all-inclusive (with transfers from Malta and a traditional local lunch). Find out more and book in advance here:

  • Gozo by Tuk Tuk – guided. A great choice for families and groups of up to 6 people. It even includes a short boat trip to Comino and the Blue Lagoon (weather permitting). More info here: Tuk Tuk tour Gozo .
  • Yippee – by Quad Bike – Tour Gozo in convoy behind a lead vehicle. Agile vehicles for a fun experience. Seats 2 people. More info here: Gozo quad bike tour .

TIP: Use coupon code malta5 and get 5% off!

Hop-on-hop-off buses

Hop-on-hop-off buses are also very convenient if travelling to Gozo island without a car and if you want to explore Gozo and see the main attractions in a short time. The buses stop at all the major attractions. Headphones are provided to listen to descriptions of the sights in 8 different languages. The harbour stop is right outside the passenger terminal.

You can buy the Gozo pass from iSeeMalta in advance online, which offers a combo with the hop-on-hop-off ferry. That service can take you to Comino and its Blue Lagoon, Buġibba and Sliema, making sightseeing convenient.

Bicycle rental in Mġarr Harbour

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can rent a bicycle to tour the island. Just beware that its hilly terrain makes for a real challenge (especially during the hot summer months)! Try Mġarr Tourist Services (4, Mġarr Harbour, Mġarr Terminal, Mġarr GSM 9031. Phone: 9982 9141). The cost is €15 per bike for the day (or €30-40 for an electric bicycle).

Another option is On 2 Wheels (15 Triq Il-Wied, Iż-Żebbuġ. Phone: 7926 6879), but you would first need to get to the village of Żebbuġ (in the North of Gozo). You can get a bike at the same price as the first option: €15 per day (or €30 for an electric bike).

Tips for taking the ferry to Gozo

General tips.

  • During the winter months, occasionally, ferry trips may be cancelled due to rough seas . If you’re heading to Gozo in January and February, keep an eye on the Gozo weather forecast before you set off.

Tips for the main Gozo Channel ferry

  • You don’t need a ticket to board the ferry in Malta ; you pay the fee for the return trip when you depart from Gozo Island.
  • If you’re driving a car or motorbike to Gozo when you get to Ċirkewwa, follow the signs to queue for the ferry .
  • Whatever vehicle you drive, Gozo Channel stewards will signal you when the time comes to board the next ferry .
  • If you’re crossing on foot, you need to enter the passenger terminal, and when the ferry starts the embarkation, you can follow the signs towards the ship.
  • Public holidays and weekends are always very busy with long queues. Sunday evenings are always the worst, with many Maltese making the crossing back.
  • There’s a cafeteria on board each of the vessels serving light snacks and coffee. There’s also a bookshop on board.
  • If you’re crossing over to or from Gozo by car, you’ll need to exit your vehicle during the crossing for your own safety.

Tips for the Gozo fast ferry services

  • Since the vessels run by both operators are smaller, they tend to be affected by rough seas more easily. Expect a bumpy ride when the seas are a little rough. Tip: Find a seat at the back of the ferry if you get nauseous easily.
  • It’s cheaper to buy your tickets online in advance.
  • Note that ferries leave right on time, so I advise you to check in 15-20 minutes prior to the departure time (plus being among the first passengers to board will allow you to choose your seat).

How long does the ferry crossing take?

The Gozo Channel ferry crossing takes around 25 minutes one way , from Ċirkewwa in Malta to Mġarr in Gozo, and vice versa. The fast ferry services take less than 45 minutes from Valletta to Mġarr.

When seas are rough, trips may take longer, and sometimes trips can even be cancelled due to bad weather.

How much is the ferry to Gozo?

For the main Gozo ferry, basic foot passenger tickets cost €4.65 for a return trip , while a car and driver ticket costs €15.70 (with passengers travelling with you being charged the regular passenger fee).

Standard tickets for the Gozo fast ferry services cost around €9.50-15 per person (return ticket).

Do the Gozo ferries operate all year round?

Yes, all Gozo ferry services operate all year round. The only exceptions are times when seas are too rough to make the crossing. That happens only rarely, though.

The three operators have winter and summer schedules with slightly different timings and frequently run from early morning till late at night.

Can I take a car rented in Malta up to Gozo?

Yes. If you have hired a car in Malta, you can cross over to Gozo with it using the ferry (without additional rental fees).

Compared to the main island, driving on Gozo Island is easier and much more relaxed. There’s hardly any traffic, except perhaps in and around Victoria (also referred to as Rabat) in the centre of the island at times.

What are the options to get to Gozo from the airport?

The options to get to Gozo from the airport are:

  • If you land during the day , take a taxi transfer ( recommended provider ) to Valletta’s Lascaris wharf (20-25-minute drive) to get onto one of the Gozo fast ferries
  • For arrivals at any time of day , book a taxi transfer from the airport you take the main Malta to Gozo ferry at Ċirkewwa (a 45-50-minute drive).
  • If you intend to rent a car from the airport , you’ll need to drive to Ċirkewwa (pretty straightforward) to get onto the main Ċirkewwa ferry. You can board with your rental car, and driving it around in Gozo Island comes at no extra charge.

Do non-Maltese Seniors benefit from the reduced ticket prices?

Unfortunately, not for the main Gozo ferry. The Senior fares are only applicable to Maltese residents. However, non-Maltese Seniors benefit from reduced ticket prices for the Gozo fast ferries .

Is there a ferry from Sliema to Gozo?

Yes, but it’s not a direct ferry. You’ll have to take the iSeeMalta hop-on-hop-off ferry .

Can you get a ferry to Gozo from Valletta?

Yes, you can get a ferry to Gozo from Valletta using one of the Gozo fast ferry services. These mostly operate during the day from 6.45 am until 7.30 am or 8.30 pm on weekends. Their schedules tend to change regularly, though, and these smaller vessels are vulnerable to bad weather (with trips being cancelled a few days in advance). They’re also not a great option for people who get seasick easily as it can be quite a rough ride.

Alternatively, you can take the iSeeMalta Hop-on-hop-off ferry from Sliema to Gozo.

Hi, are we able to bring luggage on the main gozo channel ferry

Hi Sofia, yes you can. There’s also a baggage handling service for foot passengers, but I don’t think it’s used by many and it’s pretty easy to roll around a suitcase on board. There’s plenty of space usually.

Will my 7-day travel card work on the Gozo ferry?

Hi David, unfortunately, no, the 7-day travel card won’t give you free access to either of the Gozo ferries, since it’s issued by Malta Public Transport, which is a separate company from the ferry operators.

Is it difficult to get a car space on the ferry in the morning leaving Gozo? We don’t want to miss our lunchtime plane.

Hi Emily, although people will be crossing over for work in the morning, you should be fine. If you want to play it safe my tips are: 1) Try to aim arriving at the ferry queue at the time of the previous ferry’s departure, so that you’re further in front of the queue for the next one. So if the one you need to take departs at 7, be there at 6.45 latest 2) Take a trip earlier than the one that’ll get you to the airport exactly on time. So if your flight is at noon and you want to be at at the airport by 10, you’ll need to be able to have crossed over to Malta by 9 am. That means you’ll need the 8.30 am ferry and I would aim to catch the 8.15 am ferry to add a bit of buffer time.

I hope that helps!

Hello Edward Can we take our motor home on the ferry from Malta to Gozo? Thank you

Hi Martha, yes you can, on the main ferry run by Gozo Channel that sails between Ċirkewwa and Mġarr Harbour in Gozo. Those ferries also transport trailer trucks and other large vehicles. I don’t see a specific fare on their website though worth contacting Gozo Channel directly if you’d like to know the cost beforehand.

We are planning a short trip to Gozo (28-Sep-2023 to 01-Oct-2023) departing from Valetta, however I cannot find any information for return ferries on a Sunday. Can you advise please?

Hi Liam, you can find the full schedule here: https://gozohighspeed.com/pages/fares-and-schedule . As it stands (the schedule changes regularly), the same times apply any day of the week but on Sundays there’s an extra trip both ways late in the evening.

Hi. Is it free to travel with the ferry for people +60?

Hi Ewa, it’s free for people 60+ years of age but not for tourists. You need what’s called the “Karta Anzjan” (elderly benefits card) to be able to benefit. For that you’d need to be a local resident with a Maltese ID card I believe.

Hi thanks for great info – question: while I don’t need to pay for tickets for trip to Gozo do I need to make a reservation for my vehicle in advance? We will be traveling to Gozo in mid November

Hi Rachel, you’re welcome – No, there’s no need to make a reservation in advance, you just pay for your ticket at the booths and queue up to board. What you do need to keep in mind is timing. Just because you aim to take a ferry at a particular time doesn’t mean you’ll actually be able to get on it if it’s busier than usual. Certain times you can expect to be busier, for example, a late afternoon or evening on Sundays in summer when people who live in Malta head back home from a weekend in Gozo. If you go to the website of Gozo Channel, you can see the number of queued vehicles in real-time, as well as webcams. The two most commonly used vessels (M.V. Malita and M.V. Ta Pinu) can carry up to 138 cars. Just keep in mind sometimes larger vehicles board as well and they’ll obviously take up more space. If timing is important I’m happy to help suggest a time – just let me know the date and by what time you’d want to get to Malta.

hi, how do I book a ferry from Malta to Goza if I have a car?

Hi Hetal, there’s no need to book. 🙂 Just queue up in the lanes of cars when you get to Ċirkewwa and roll onto the ferry. You pay the fee on your return from Gozo, where you’ll drive down to Mġarr Harbour and pass through ticket booths before you can queue up to board the ferry back to Malta.

Very helpful website! Thanks so much.

Can you book the Gozo ferry please?

Hi Donald, for the main ferry (that departs from Ċirkewwa) you can’t, no, but unless you’re looking to cross to Gozo with a car there isn’t a need since they’re large vessels (and it’s a short trip). With the fast ferry services from Valletta you _can_ buy tickets online in advance.

Looking for an island getaway where the waters are electric blue , the history is deep, and the crowds are thin? Then it’s time to head to Gozo. Located in the Mediterranean, Gozo is just one of the breathtaking islands part of the archipelago of Malta. It’s a place that’s been inhabited for thousands of years and has remained a quiet and stunning destination all that time. It’s a place where outdoor enthusiasts and laid-back vacationers can both find a little bliss, if they’re willing to make the trek. Here’s what you need to know about planning the perfect getaway to Gozo.

Related : The 50 Best Places to Travel in 2023

Gozo is a small island, covering just 26 square miles. It’s a spot tailor-made for rest and relaxation, so those looking for a party atmosphere or a rowdy experience should steer clear. Though it’s quiet, there’s still plenty to see and do here, especially for those looking for an active vacation. And, before you go, make sure to exchange dollars for euros, as that’s the currency across Malta.

The good news is, there really isn’t a bad time to go to Gozo. According to WeatherSpark , throughout the year, the temperature averages range from 50°F to 87°F and rarely ever fall below 44°F. That said, if you’re looking for warm weather worthy of a dip in the ocean, it’s best to visit during the summer season between June and September, when the average high is 86°F. Also check out the shoulder seasons in the spring (April and May) and fall (mid-September to November) when temperatures remain comfortable in the 70s.

Visit the one-time site of the Azure Window.

The Azure Window was one of the great natural phenomena of Gozo, and it was even featured in television shows like Game of Thrones . Sadly, it collapsed in 2017, but that doesn’t make the site any less worthy of a visit. Hike along the Dwejra Bay for as long as you’d like, taking in the views of the craggy coastline and seeing other special sites like The Fungus Rock, the Blue Hole, and the Inland Sea lagoon.

See the Citadel.

Learn more about the island’s history by visiting the Citadel in Rabat (also referred to as Victoria). The walled city was built in the 15th century and still contains many historically significant sites and several of the island’s museums, including the Museum of Archeology. The Citadel also offers one of the best views in town thanks to its location on top of the hill, so make sure to take a 360-degree look while you’re there.

Take a boat to the Blue Lagoon.

Though all of Gozo is gorgeous, it’s a good idea to get on a boat and get off the island to visit one of the most popular attractions — the Blue Lagoon. Located on the nearby island of Comino, the lagoon is the stuff of Instagram dreams, with water that looks almost too blue to be real, surrounded by coves and caves worth exploring. Charter a sailboat for a day for a private adventure, or hop on a public cruise for a quick visit.

Lounge at Ramla Beach.

If you’re here in the warmer months, stop by Ramla Beach, known for having the softest sand on the island. It’s a large beach, so you won’t have trouble finding a spot to lay out for the day, but do note it’s a popular destination, so odds are you’ll be next to another tourist or two.

See the salt pans.

The Xwejni Salt Pans are one more glorious site to visit on Gozo. The salt pans, located on the north end of the island, have been used for hundreds of years to harvest salt for locals, and they remain an important part of Gozo life. They also happen to be a rather photogenic place thanks to their unique patterns.

Here, guests will find spacious suites, including several with massive patios for enjoying the outdoors, and residential-style apartments, as well as several restaurants and a full-service spa to help you further unwind.

Grand Hotel Gozo

Located at the gateway to the island, the Grand Hotel Gozo is both a convenient and comfortable place to call home during your stay. Take in the ocean views from every window, book family suites for group getaways, take a dip in its indoor and outdoor pools, and book a treatment in its Elemis Spa.

Dar tal-Kaptan Boutique Maison

Find yourself surrounded by more of Gozo’s history at the Dar tal-Kaptan Boutique Maison , a 400-year-old farmhouse in Ghasri. Here, guests will find a home-style stay that still includes all the bells and whistles you want on vacation, including a sauna, hammam, steam room, and several outdoor spaces to soak in the sun.

In case you were wondering, for those travelling with a car, the “Car and Driver Standard Fare” is €15.70. There are also different fares if you have a motorcycle, a bicycle, trailer, and other vehicle types. For a full breakdown, here is the official website for Gozo ferry fares .

Other Ferry Travel Considerations

Before you prepare for the ferry journey, there are a few other details that you should consider.

  • Safety: The boats are equipped with more than enough lifejackets for everyone – a max of 900 people – as well as an AED, fire extinguishers, and inflatable evacuation slides and rafts.
  • Cars: You MUST leave your car during the voyage and go to the passenger deck. You can return to it when you get to Gozo to drive away.
  • Motorbikes : You need to secure it as per their instructions – but you should know what you are doing. If you’ve never rented something with two wheels before and you’re just taking it on the ferry, be extra careful so you don’t hurt yourself, the bike, or others.
  • Accessibility: Three of the ships have a lift: Malita, Ta Pinu, and Gaudos while a chair lift is available on the Nikolaos. There is also a priority lane at each terminal to assist people with disabilities.
  • Pets: Pets need a ticket and they must be on a leash at all times. They aren’t allowed in the food areas and on any chairs/benches etc.
  • Cargo or Dangerous Goods: This is more for locals but as a traveller it’s good to know that there are separate ferry times for carrying large cargo and/or goods that are listed as dangerous (explosive, etc).

Our Experience on the Gozo Ferry

  • Ferry Company:  Gozo Channel
  • Journey Time: 25 minutes
  • Cost:  Standard Passenger Fare €4.65 (at time of writing)
  • Tickets Bought:  Tickets are bought IN-PERSON ON GOZO when you return to Malta

Overall, we had a great experience taking the ferry from Malta to Gozo. To tell you a little more about our experience: We caught the ferry to Gozo in the morning and came back later the same day during sunset. Below is a more detailed account of the whole experience. Generally speaking, it’s very straightforward.

Leaving Malta for Gozo

If you’ve decided to take the ferry to Gozo, you need to first get yourself to the ferry terminal on Malta. The ferry terminal is located at the northernmost end of the main island of Malta close to Paradise Bay Resort .

Location of Ċirkewwa Passenger Terminal : Located at the north end of the island of Malta in Ċirkewwa.

If you are staying in Sliema, Valletta, or a number of other cities/towns on the island, you will need to head north. There are a number of ways to get to the Ċirkewwa Ferry Terminal.

You can drive there from the south end of the island in about 45 minutes. There is parking available at the terminal if you aren’t taking the car to Gozo. If you are taking the car, just follow the signs into the vehicle waiting area and await instructions to drive onto the next ferry.

You can also take the bus to the Ferry Terminal. This is what we did from the Sliema area. The following bus routes can get you to the Ferry Terminal in Ċirkewwa: 41, 42, 101, 221, 222, N11, X1, X1A, X1B. You can learn more about bus routes and timetables at the official website for Malta Transport . The bus system is very good in Malta so use them!

If you are coming right from the airport, you can hop on a bus (mentioned above), hop in a rental car , or hop in a cab for a ride that is around 30 Euro – but make sure you account for traffic and getting across the island if you are trying to catch a specific ferry to Gozo.

Once you arrive at the terminal, it’s honestly pretty straightforward. Since you don’t have to buy a ticket, you basically just hang out in the large seating area. There’s a little cafe in the terminal for coffee and little sweets. They announce which ferry is boarding and when the time comes, simply follow the signs/crowds into the ferry.

Once on-board, there is seating inside and out so choose what works best for you and get comfortable. We opted to stand out in the sunshine to see as much as we could. This would prove to be a great idea.

Ferry Ride to Gozo

Once everyone and the cars were on board, off we went! The short ride was largely uneventful – which is what you want from a ferry ride across the open ocean. It was very smooth and people were both inside looking out the windows as well as up on the upper deck taking in the views.

They actually cancel the ferries if the seas are too rough but usually it’s easy-going through this channel. Eric also didn’t visit Malta in the high summer season – but we can imagine the ferry and terminal being a little more hectic and busy during that time. Honestly though, it’s such a straightforward process and an enjoyable ride.

If you want to stand outside (like we did) you might want a sweater or jacket because the wind on the water can make things very chilly even if the sun is shining brightly. In fact, this can be more dangerous because you don’t feel how much your skin is burning when the cold wind is on it!

In terms of things to know: The boats have free wifi on board and there’s also a small cafe that does light food/snacks and drinks. Good to grab a coffee (or beer, more on this later) if you are in a pinch. That said, you can wait until Mġarr harbour for the little seaside cafes/restaurants/bars for lunch.

As you cross, you also get great views of the island of Comino, the third-largest island that makes up the country of Malta. There is a separate ferry company ( Comino Ferries ) and the island has a few attractions like the Blue Lagoon which you might want to check out.

Arriving on Gozo

fishing boats in harbour with cliffs behind in mgarr gozo

After about 20 minutes, it’s time to get ready to get off. You see the island of Gozo coming closer and it can be a little exciting. The first thing you see is the little harbour full of boats – this is Mġarr Harbour. You also might notice a church up on the hill – this is the Church of the Madonna of Lourdes.

You can read up on > You can read up on things to do in Gozo here (opens in a new tab)” href=”https://www.penguinandpia.com/en/things-to-do-in-gozo/” target=”_blank”>things to do in Gozo here

The boat docks pretty quickly and then you can get moving again. The terminal is quite small and you follow the signs to quickly exit the terminal basically looking across into the little harbour. In the terminal, there are a number of kiosks for tours and other things.

Address of Gozo Ferry Terminal: Mġarr Harbour, Mġarr, Gozo

If you brought the car, you can drive your car off the ferry (obviously). If you are on foot, you can hop in a cab (which are waiting right in front of you exiting the terminal), rent a car right on the spot in Gozo , or catch the Malta Public Transport bus.

The bus is good because any Malta day tickets you might have work on these buses on Gozo, too. The 301 Bus and the 323 Bus take you directly from the Ferry Terminal (stop called Vapur) to the capital city of Victoria (the main bus terminal, it’s obvious). The 303 will also get you to Victoria but in a more roundabout way.

Just so you know, you can also buy a ticket for the hop on the hop-on, hop-off sightseeing bus . Sounds silly, but you can then use it as both a way to get around the island while you are there (as it has multiple stops and buses running the same route) and as a great way to learn about the sights to check out.

Boarding on Gozo Back to Malta

Once you are done in Gozo – for us it was a very long but awesome day – you can basically do the whole thing in reverse. You need to first head from wherever you are on Gozo to the Gozo Ferry Terminal back at the harbour.

One thing you need to know is that if you are travelling on Sunday or a holiday, the ferries get very busy because locals make their way to Gozo for the weekend and all come back on Sunday. The traffic to even get to the harbour can be backed up significantly so if you have a ferry time in mind after 2:00 pm on Sunday leave yourself lots of time!

If you are in a car, just follow the signs to line up for getting back on the ferry much like you did heading for Gozo. If you are on foot, just head back into the small ferry terminal. This time you will buy your ticket to head back to Malta. You need it to go through a set of gates so you can’t get on without a ticket in Gozo.

Just so you know, you can go and purchase pre-paid return tickets at any time – it doesn’t have to be right before your return ferry trip (but it usually is for most travellers). This can be done at the Mġarr Harbour/Gozo Ferry Terminal when the office is open.

Arriving Back on Malta

sunset over the back of a ferry crossing from gozo

The ride back is much the same as when you go – except people are usually more tired because they have been in the sun all day or have been exploring.

Eric’s ride back was very memorable. This is because of the amazing sunset he was treated to and the circumstances of the ride. Eric and his friends brought a beer on-board and had a “cheers” to a great day on Gozo. They cleaned up their bottles and drank responsibly so it was a great way to end off a fantastic day – beers on the top deck!

Once back in Ċirkewwa everyone on foot got off pretty quickly while the cars got off as well. Eric then headed for the buses again at the large bus stop area outside the terminal.

Depending on where you are staying, there are lots or fewer buses you can catch to get back to the south end of the island. Usually, they are frequent so it’s not a huge deal if they fill up. If you took the car, then off you go again to where you are staying!

And there you have it – our experience taking the ferry from Malta to Gozo and back! Taking the ferry is very easy if you know what to expect. Just follow the signs, leave yourself time, and be sure to enjoy the views from the ferry when you cross. Above all, enjoy Malta – it’s a fantastic little country of more than just sunshine.

As always, Happy Gozo Ferry Waddlin’, – L&E

travel malta to gozo

For travellers spending only a few days in Malta, it can be easy to fill your days exploring the mainland. Whether it be wandering through historic Valletta, exploring the walled city of Mdina or heading to the fish market of Marsaxlokk, there’s no doubt that there’s plenty to occupy any Malta itinerary . For visitors that have a bit more time on their trip though, it’s certainly worth taking a Gozo day trip from Malta.

While you can certainly spend more than just one day in Gozo, this allows you to see some of the highlights of Malta’s less-visited island and give you a great introduction for a return trip.

Table of Contents

How to Get to Gozo from Malta

There are three main transport options for your day trip to Gozo from Malta: bus & ferry, car or organised tour.

By Bus & Ferry

Malta’s bus network is fantastic and a great way to get around the island if you don’t have your own transport.

To get to Gozo, you’ll first need to take a bus to the ferry terminal which is located in Cirkewwa. You can see the latest timetables and routes on Malta’s public transport website as well as through the integration on Google maps.

A single-use bus ticket costs €2.50 and is valid for two hours (including on the buses in Gozo). If you intend to use the buses a lot during your time in Malta, it’s worth considering to purchase a travel card.

Ferries to Gozo depart every 30-45 minutes and you actually don’t need to purchase a ticket when departing Malta. Instead, you’ll need to buy a return ticket when you depart from Gozo. The standard passenger fare is €4.65 and you’ll arrive at the south of Gozo in the port town of Mgarr.

Malta to Gozo Ferry

If you don’t want to be reliant on the buses in Malta, then having your own transport is a great option. Not only will you be able to get to the ferry terminal quicker, but it will also be easier to get around the island of Gozo.

The cost for taking a car onto the Gozo ferry is €15.70 which also includes a ticket for one person. Similarly to if you are buying just a passenger ticket, you’ll only need to buy your ticket on the return leg from Gozo. All other passengers in the car apart from the driver will need to purchase a passenger ticket.

There are plenty of car rental options in Malta and you can typically find the deals on Rentalcars.com. This platform aggregates prices for many major car hire options to help you get a great deal.

It’s also worth it to consider taking out excess insurance on your vehicle from iCarHireInsurance if you rent a car to avoid having to pay the sometimes hefty insurance charges from the car rental company.

If you prefer to have your day organised for you, then there are plenty of tour options to choose that offer different aspects of the highlights on Gozo.

A tour to Gozo can be a particularly good idea if you don’t have your own car and are taking a day trip to Gozo not from Valletta or Sliema where the majority of bus routes depart from.

One of the top reasons travellers want to visit Gozo is to combine Gozo and Comino in one day. This guided tour or this guided tour both involves spending an hour each at the Blue Lagoon & Crystal Lagoon on Comino before giving travellers 3 hours of free time on Gozo to explore.

These tours depart from Bugibba but will organise ground transport from other parts of Malta for a small additional fee. They also offer some transport options on the island of Gozo if you don’t want to take the local bus.

Crysyal Lagoon on Comino in Malta

If you’d prefer to explore more of Gozo rather than spending half your day swimming then there are also some great tour options for you.

This full-day jeep tour takes you to many of the highlights on the island, includes lunch and a short powerboat ride to the Blue & Crystal lagoons. This tour picks you up from your hotel where you will board the Gozo ferry and then be met by your tour guide.

This similar guided jeep tour is also a good option as it gives you even more time on the island of Gozo as it doesn’t include a visit to Comino. A hearty lunch and wine are all included.

And if you don’t want to bother with the ferry to Gozo, this full-day jeep tour includes transport from Malta on a private boat before taking you to all of the highlights of the island.

If you prefer to spend your one day in Gozo with a bit of adrenaline running through your veins then this guided quad-bike tour might be for you! You’ll get to see many of the highlights of Gozo and it includes comprehensive insurance, lunch and a powerboat ride to the Blue & Crystal lagoons.

Finally, if you’re not worried about your budget in Malta , this private guided tour is a great way to see the island in your own vehicle with a licensed guide.

Gozo Day Trip Itinerary

This Gozo itinerary includes a visit to the capital of Victoria (Rabat) and then gives travellers a few different options on how to spend their afternoon before going back to Malta.

If you have your own vehicle, you might be able to fit in two of the three options listed, however, if you’re relying on the bus network, you should just focus on one part of the island if you’re only spending a day exploring Gozo.

Victoria (Rabat)

One of the highlights of visiting the island of Gozo is exploring its beautiful capital Victoria (Rabat) — Rabat is the original Maltese name.

You can get a bus directly from the ferry terminal in Mgarr to the capital – don’t forget you can use your bus ticket from Malta if it was validated fewer than two hours ago.

In Victoria, the highlight is undoubtedly exploring the impressive Citadella complex that offers great views of the island as well as housing a number of museums such as the Gozo Museum of Archaeology and an Old Prison.

Opposite the Citadella, pay a visit to the St George’s Basilica — an impressive baroque-style church.

Victoria is also a good place to grab a bite to eat before embarking on your afternoon adventure as it has the most cafe options on the island. One great choice for lunch near the main attractions is Cafe Jubilee which serves local and international dishes in an English-style pub.

Visiting Victoria (Rabat) is a must on a Gozo day trip from Malta

Option 1: East Gozo — Temples & Beaches

If you fancy seeing some historical sites older than the pyramids of Egypt, then head to the Eastern part of the island and visit The Ġgantija Temples.

These Neolithic structures are open year-round and there is a museum that explains the historical significance of the site.

From the temples, continue heading east to Ramla Beach. This beach is one of the best on Gozo and it is easily accessible with beautiful golden sand. It is rocky when getting into the water so consider bringing water shoes if you intend to go for a swim. From Ramla Bay, there is an hourly bus that goes back to the capital of Victoria.

Ramla Beach in Gozo

Option 2: West Gozo – Hiking & Wine

If you’re a nature lover and want to explore more of Gozo’s natural beauty then take a bus 311 west to Dwerja Bay.

This bay is one of the most stunning in Malta and is the location where the famous Azure Window used to stand. From Dwejra Bay, it’s possible to go hiking north along the coastline to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

You might get thirsty after all that hiking so it’s worth planning ahead and organising a wine tasting at nearby Tal-Massar Winery.

This small boutique operation is run by Anthony, who gives guests a tour of the vineyard, explains what makes wine from Gozo unique before you get to enjoy a free-flowing tasting with some local snacks. You can contact them via e-mail or through their Facebook page to arrange a visit.

The winery is located in Gharb, not far from the western coast of Gozo and you can take the back to Victoria.

Option 3: Comino

If you want to spend your day enjoying some of the beautiful swimming spots in Malta, you can combine a visit to Gozo with taking a boat to the small island of Comino and enjoy the Blue and/or Crystal Lagoons.

In the port town of Mgarr, you’ll find many small boat operators willing to take you out to the island and there’s even the option of renting your own small boat.

Both the Blue & Crystal Lagoon do get busy, particularly in the summer months so if you do have the option of getting there early then I suggest taking advantage of that.

The Blue Lagoon in Malta

Dinner in Gozo

The last ferry from Gozo back to Malta departs at 23:15 so there’s no need to rush back the main island and instead you should take advantage of some of the amazing restaurants in Gozo. And while Malta is located in Southern Europe, its British past means eating dinner at 6 or 7 pm isn’t a problem!

One option is to have dinner in Victoria where there are several great restaurants such as Maldonado . This will also allow you to have an evening stroll in the Citadella and see it all lit up.

Another option is to head back to Mgarr where the ferry departs from and instead enjoy dinner there. Ta’ Tona is one of the best restaurants that we ate during our time in Malta and it has a range of local dishes and freshly caught fish.

Mgarr itself is a nice small town and pleasant to wander through in the evening after a delicious meal.

Evening stroll in Mgarr

Have more time?

Apart from enjoying the other options listed in this Gozo itinerary, you can also head to the north of the island where the Xwejni Salt Pans are located. These salt pans form unique geometric patterns and are still being harvested by local workers.

There is also a craft brewery on the island called Lord Chambray which makes fantastic local beers – you can visit their taproom for tastings and you’ll also find their beer on the menus of many restaurants on Gozo.

All in all, there is plenty to keep you occupied on the island and more than enough reason to choose to stay in Gozo over Malta for a few nights.

Where to stay in Gozo

If you don’t have your own car to get around Gozo, staying in Victoria (Rabat) is ideal as the majority of bus routes pass through here and it has the greatest selection of restaurants and cafes on the island.

Casa Gemelli Boutique Guesthouse – This guesthouse is located in a traditional Maltese house with rooms beautifully furnished. They offer a couple of different double rooms including some with great views of the Citadel and include breakfast in the nightly rate.

The Duke Boutique Hotel  – A luxurious and modern hotel also located in Victoria (Rabat), they offer a range of rooms and suites suitable for couples or small families. Breakfast is also included daily.

Private Rental  – Gozo has a range of great private rentals such as  this historic farmhouse  and  this beautiful sea-view apartment.

Thanks for all the information. We spent 12th-19th Feb in Malta – an escape from the Polish winter – staying in Floriana. Your various mails were very informative and useful and we were able to make a tour of the north and south of the island as well as a sea trip to Gozo and Comino, but February is not the time for swimming in the blue lagoon, although one intrepid young man did spend 30 seconds in the sea. Valetta, Mosta, Mdina, Dingly cliffs – all brilliant. sites, with too much to see The Limestone Heritage is certainly worth adding to one’s itinerary. An excellent week.

Glad that you had a great trip, John! 🙂

Hi, I have Saturday, 20th Nov to spend in Gozo. How can I book a guided tour to see the citadel and the two temples of Ggantija temples. I would also like to see the temples of Hagar Qim, Mnajdra and Tarxien on my return. How can I organize this? I did not see many trips on Saturdays. thanks Priyanthi

Best Things To Do in Gozo If Love History

The island of Gozo is the ideal destination for history lovers. These are the top Gozo attractions you shouldn’t miss.

Visit the Ggantija Temples

Built around 3600 BCE, the Ggantija Temples are one of the oldest still standing in the world. Their name comes after the Maltese word for “giant” since they were believed to have been built by giants.

Ggantija Temples are on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. They are a popular tourist attraction on Gozo and are open daily to the public.

In addition to Ggantija, there are other megalithic temples in the Maltese archipelago. Check out this blog for more information.

Discover Victoria and the Citadel

Victoria is t he capital city of Gozo and is located in the centre of the island. The town was initially called Rabat, but in the 19th century, the town was renamed Victoria in honour of Queen Victoria. However, most Gozitans, especially older ones, still refer to it as Rabat.

The Citadel is Victoria’s top historical attraction. It is a fortified city located in the centre of Victoria. Also known as Castello, it has been inhabited since the Bronze Age.

There’s evidence that this area was an acropolis for the Punic-Roman city of Gaulos. During the medieval period, a castle was built on top of the Acropolis, providing shelter to Gozo’s citizens. In 1551, Ottoman forces invaded and destroyed the Cittadella.

The Knights of Malta undertook a major reconstruction of the Citadel in 1599. They have built a gunpowder fortress on the Citadel’s southern walls. Northern walls were also rebuilt, although they retained their medieval look.

As the Citadel has been renovated and expanded over the years, it is now a popular tourist destination with museums, churches, and cultural attractions. It is also a popular photography spot that offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

Things to do in Gozo - Citadel

There are also several museums in the Citadel of Gozo:

The Gozo Museum of Archaeology : This museum has a collection of ancient artefacts and displays about Gozo’s history.

The Gozo Nature Museum : This museum exhibits the natural history of Gozo. Various collections can be found here, including minerals, geology, marine life, habitats and ecosystems, and national plants.

The Gran Castello Historic House : The museum’s collections portray everyday life on the Maltese Islands through artefacts that tell the story of agricultural society, customs, and crafts.

Old Prison : There are two parts to the prison complex – an open cell and a separate building with six solitary cells. The prison operated from the mid-16th century until 1962.

Knights who had been acting up were held there, including Fra Jean Parisot de Valette (a later Grand Master of Malta). There are many carvings on its limestone walls. They include images of vessels, handprints, crosses, names, dates, games, and drawings.

There’s a beautiful contrast between the blue Mediterranean Sea and the white rocks lining the left side of Marsalforn Bay. They’re made of white limestone and make an excellent spot for pictures.

Hondoq ir-Rummien : The clear waters of Hondoq ir-Rummien make it a popular swimming spot, especially among locals.

This bay offers breathtaking views of Comino and Malta. The Gozitans love this bay for barbecues in the summertime and for relaxing in the evening.

Xwejni Bay and Qbajjar Bay : Two shallow bays are next to one another, both with rocky stretches and pebbly beaches. There are several bars along the waterfront.

Xwejni Bay is amazing for snorkelling. You will find naturally formed rock formations with tunnels and arches underneath. There is a nice play of light and dark blues due to the varying depth of the water. You might also see octopuses, crabs, and colourful fish.

Things to do in Gozo - Xwejni Bay

In summer, tourists and people from Malta visit Gozo, and the most popular beaches can be crowded. Check out my guide to lesser-known beaches if you want peace and quiet.

Nature Lovers’ Top Things To Do in Gozo

Get ready to fall in love with the island’s natural beauty. There are several scenic areas on Gozo, including Mgarr ix-Xini, Dwejra and the Xlendi Cliffs.

Visit Mgarr ix-Xini Bay

A stando ut feature of Mgarr ix-Xini Bay is its secluded location, making it a perfect place to escape the crowds. It’s also famous because Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt filmed “By the Sea” here.

Things to do in Gozo - Mġarr ix-Xini Beach

Despite the small beach and pebbly shore, I recommend this place because of its setting and landscape. This bay is surrounded by cliffs, making it a great photo backdrop.

In summer, you can swim or snorkel and jump off the rocks along the bay’s sides. But be aware of anything dangerous, like strong waves or sharp rocks.

Things to do in Gozo - A View of Mġarr ix-Xini Bay

You can also rent kayaks to explore the area from the water and enjoy the scenery from a different angle.

Things to do in Gozo - Kayaking in Mġarr ix-Xini Bay

Located a short walk from the beach is the Knights’ Watchtower. It’s open to the public, and visitors are welcome to see the watchtower built by the Knights in 1661.

The bay is only accessible by a narrow road. Parking is limited, so get there early. Bring your own food and drinks, because there’s only one restaurant on the beach.

Explore Dwejra

On Gozo’s west c oast, Dwejra off ers stunning natural beauty and is a popular tourist destination . There are lots of interesting things to do here, like visiting the Blue Hole, t he Inland Sea , t he Fungus Rock, and the Azure Window.

Blue Hole : There’s no better diving spot in Malta than Dwerja’s Blue Hole. It’s perfect for snorkelling, freediving, and swimming.

The Blue Hole is a circular limestone sinkhole with an area of five metres across and ten metres wide. The depth of the hole is 15 metres.

At nine metres deep, there’s an underwater window that leads to the open sea. Large boulders line the exterior, while coral and marine life decorate the walls.

Thing to Do in Gozo - Blue Hole

There’s a 200-meter walk over sharp rocks to get to the dive, but it’s worth it! It’s best to wear waterproof sandals or aqua shoes.

Fungus Rock : This place is named after a plant called Maltese Fungus. The Knights found a Maltese fungus on the flat surface of the rock. Despite its appearance, it’s a parasite, not a fungus. It doesn’t have any healing properties.

During the Knights of Malta, getting to the rock without permission meant three years in jail. Apparently, the Knights were trying to save the Maltese fungus, thinking it had healing properties. It was even given to famous noblemen and visitors to the Maltese islands.

Things to Do in Gozo - Fungus Rock

Fungus Rock is a natural reserve, but you can swim and snorkel nearby. A breathtaking sunset and high cliffs are my favourite things about this place.

Dwejra Inland Sea : T he Dwejra Inland Sea is a shallow, semicircular lagoon about 60m wide. It is connected to the Mediterranean Sea by an 80-m-long tunnel.

The Inland Sea is a popular destination for divers. But non-divers can also enjoy it by taking a boat trip to observe the cliffs and caves along Gozo’s western shore.

Things to Do in Gozo - Inland Sea

Azure Window: There was a natural arch called the Azure Window on the coast of Dwejra. It was a popular tourist attraction and was known for its stunning beauty. As a result of natural erosion, the Azure Window collapsed in 2017. But despite its collapse, it’s still an iconic symbol of Gozo.

Check Out Xlendi Bay

Gozo ‘s Xlendi Bay i s at the bottom of a steep valley that starts from Kercem. This locality is popular with tourists and Maltese alike. It has many restaurants, cafés, kayak rental services and diving centres.

The seashore has a beautiful promenade lined with tables to enjoy a relaxing picnic.

People can also swim in this bay. On the left is a stone path with benches where they can leave their belongings and jump into the sea. Several ladders are available for swimmers to climb out of the water.

Thing to Do in Gozo - Swimming in Xlendi Bay

I recommend walking up to the Xlendi watch tower t o get a great view of the cliffs and the sea. You can reach the watch tower by walking along the promenade. Once you see a bridge over the valley, cross it and walk uphill along the path.

From the tower, walk down to the limestone coast. It’s a nice, quiet spot, away from the tourist crowds. It’s a great place to relax, sunbathe, and admire the spectacular coastline.

Learn More about Salt Pans

Goz o’s salt pans are n ear Marsalforn, north of Xwejni Bay. Salt pans are shallow pools of seawater where you evaporate the salt.

Salt pans have been used on Gozo for centuries to produce high-quality salt. The salt pans are a popular tourist destination.

Visitors see how salt is made and learn about the island’s culture and history. It’s not only historically significant but beautiful too. The salt pans glisten in the sun, creating a moon-like scene.

Discover Il-Għasri Valley

Il-Gasri Valley is a secluded canyon-like area surrounded by steep limestone cliffs. I love the view from the top of the cliffs. You’ll be blown away by the natural beauty there.

You can walk down the steps to a small pebble beach. Once there, you feel like you’ve found paradise, surrounded by nature and crystal-clear water.

The canyon is 300 meters long and narrow, which keeps the water quiet, and when it’s windy, this is a gorgeous place. You can enjoy the sound of the sea crashing against the rocks. It can get crowded later in the day with people and divers, so get there early.

Things to do in Gozo - Il-Għasri Valley Canyon

Things to Do in Gozo: Go Hiking

All the nature sites in Gozo can be explored by hiking. It can be hot in the summer, reaching 30°C (86°F). So, the best time to hike is from October through May, when it is cooler. It can get muddy in winter, so wear non-slip waterproof shoes.

Some popular hikes include:

Walk from Xwejni Bay to Wied il-Ghasri: This trail runs along the coast of salt pans to Il-Għasri Valley.

Hike from Mgarr Harbour to Xlendi : Enjoy stunning views of the sea and surrounding countryside on this walk.

A hike from il Ghasri Valley to Wied il Mielah Arch : This trek includes views of northern Gozo’s cliffs, caves, and valleys.

A hike from Mgarr Harbour to Hondoq Bay : This is a short beginner level coaster trek with Comino views.

The rock creates a natural window that provides some of the most spectacular views across the sea and coastline; a top thing to do in Gozo! It’s thought that the cave was once lived in by Troglodytes (the ancient cave dwellers). Over the years, the function changed. For a time it was even used by the Knights of St John as a place to fire cannons from during pirate attacks.

Good to know: The Tal-Mixta Cave is located on private property. You are allowed to access the cave but respect the owner’s privacy.

The Ggantija Temples are a UNESCO world heritage site and a must-see on your trip to Gozo in Malta. These mammoth limestone structures are thought to be even older than the Egyptian pyramids! No one knows how these giant rocks came to be here, but the locals believe only giants could have brought them to this spot, which is why they are named Ggantija (meaning ‘giant’). Archeologists and historians have studied this site and believe it was used for fertility rituals hundreds of years ago.

Things to do in Comino

  • Blue Lagoon. The blue lagoon is one of those bucket list things you have to see while in Malta. It’s intensely blue and feels like total paradise. However, it’s one of the most popular attractions in Malta so please note that in peak season it will be very busy!
  • Crystal Lagoon – The crystal lagoon is lesser known than the blue lagoon so it’s a bit more peaceful for swimming. It’s a bit rockier than blue lagoon, and not quite as intensely blue but it’s still a beautiful place to visit and the remoteness of it makes it feel very special.
  • Santa Maria Caves – Malta really has it all, Caribbean island style beaches, turquoise lagoons, and even beautiful caves! The Santa Maria Caves are a famous spot for snorkeling – a unique spot where a variety of marine life live. The journey to get there is interesting too, as you have to pass through a cave tunnel from Santa Maria Bay.

How to Get to Comino

The main ferry leaves from Mgarr harbor every hour and costs 6.45 EUR for a return ticket.  The alternative is to join a Blue Lagoon boat tour , which may be a bit more expensive but gives you the benefit of having the boat to jump from instead of looking for a spot on the shore.

Dwerja Bay was most famous for being home to the Azure window arch: an arch created naturally by the elements and the sea. It was used as a film location for Game of Thrones, and it was very sacred to the people of Malta, who saw it as a spiritual place to connect with nature. Sadly, it collapsed in 2017. However, the rocks in the water have now created a very diverse diving site.

How to Visit Gozo

Start your journey by flying into Malta. If you’re planning on hiring a car , you’ll need to head to the northern tip of the island, to a place called Ċirkewwa, to take the Gozo Channel Ferry. The Channel Ferry is currently the only option to bring your car to Gozo. Although it is a bit more inconvenient to go to the north of Malta, the ferry journey only takes 25 minutes. ( See the ferry schedule here )

gozo channel ferry

The fast ferry is a relatively new option. It departs from Valletta, which is very convenient and only takes 45 minutes. It’s a passenger ferry, so it is not possible to take your car, but it’s perfect for visiting Gozo on a day trip or if you don’t require a vehicle on your vacation. It’s also just a lovely way to travel, with beautiful views from the deck for the entire journey. You can even see Comino Island on your trip (where you’ll find the Blue Lagoon).

How to Get Around Gozo

Gozo is very remote, and public transport links aren’t always the best. However, it’s possible to take public buses between certain towns on the island. Another great option is to hop on the red Gozo sightseeing bus. It takes you to 14 different stops in 2.5 hours and includes an audio tour.

gozo victoria rabat

The best option is to hire a car from Malta and bring it on the ferry. Doing this gives you more flexibility and the opportunity to drive to rural spots in Gozo.

If you’re visiting Gozo for the day, consider booking a private jeep tour from Mgarr Harbor. This way, you can ask your guide to take you to some of the best spots on the island, and you’ll have more flexibility.

Where to Stay in Gozo

Victoria (Rabat) is the central city on the island and is a popular place to stay, with lots of hotels and all the best bars, restaurants, and shops. Marsalforn is also a popular choice: a charming fishing village with good amenities, easy access to the beach, and good connections to other places on the island. If you really want to embrace island life, book to stay in a countryside villa or a rural farmhouse.

Best Time to Visit Gozo

Gozo is beautiful at any time of year, although there are a few things to consider. During the winter months, the landscape becomes much greener and luscious. However, the sea is cold, and there is a high chance of rain. In the summer, it’s a top-rated holiday destination for people from other European countries and locals from mainland Malta. Although it’s the perfect time for a beach holiday, the beaches can get crowded.

Fall is a perfect time to visit – the beaches are empty, and Gozo gets that remote, peaceful feeling back again after a busy summer of tourism.

These islands have adopted elements of every civilisation that have invaded them, with English food, Italian Catholicism and Arabic language, and boast three UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the entire Maltese capital, Valletta, resplendent with cathedrals, lush gardens and colonnaded squares.

Things to do in Malta and Gozo

BEST SWIMMING The Mediterranean Sea is particularly clear around the islands, as currents carry most of the muck northwards. There are sandy beaches at St Paul's Bay, Mellieha Bay and Golden Bay on Malta, and at Ramla Bay and Marsalforn on Gozo. But there are better - and less crowded - rocky beaches at Fungus Rock and Xleni on Gozo. For rock diving, head to Peter's Pool on Malta's Delimara promontory. It is also worth making your way up the obscure country road to Wied il-Ghasri on Gozo. Here, a staircase cut into the cliff-face leads you down to a tiny, pebbled beach at the head of a long, blue inlet where, during the week at least, you have a good chance of being entirely alone. Mgarr, also on Gozo, is far easier to reach and is great for snorkelling.

The best way to get around Malta and Gozo

The public bus service on Malta and Gozo is a good way to get around. Buses on Malta serve the major tourist areas and on Gozo go practically everywhere. Although Valletta and the Cottonera are easily explored on foot, renting a car is a good option if you want to get to the farther reaches of the islands, especially as taxis are expensive. Major and local car rental agencies are located on Malta and Gozo. You can also rent motorcycles and bicycles on Malta. Driving is on the left. Regular ferry service links Cirkewwa on Malta and Mgarr on Gozo, taking about 20 minutes each way. There is also an irregular ferry service between each island and Comino. Check locally for schedules.

The Perfect Travel Itinerary For Malta and Gozo

Johnny

  • Last Updated On: September 20, 2022

Malta is more than just an archipelago (yes! It’s not just one island!) in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea; it’s a hidden gem and definitely holds more adventures than most people know. At only 300 square km, this island nation packs so much history, architecture, food, and natural beauty that you can spend weeks here.

I spent a long weekend in Malta visiting the main sights including Valletta, Mdina, and Gozo. I could have definitely spent the entire week on this beautiful island nation south of Sicily but I only had a long weekend to explore. I will certainly go back at some point, rent a car, and explore the lesser known areas of the country. If you’re also visiting for a three to four days and want to know exactly what to do, this is the itinerary for you!

Three to Four day Itinerary for Malta

I had a Friday to Monday timeline for my trip to Malta. Was this enough? Probably not but I was able to make the most of my time and explore as much as I could. I structured my trip this way after talking to some local Maltese friends.

Day 1: Arrive in Valletta at night and have dinner

Day 2: Valletta in the morning and Mdina in the afternoon

Day 3: Gozo day trip from Valletta

Day 4: Explore Marsaxloxx in the morning before my 4:30pm flight

Staying in Valletta

As I was not renting a car, I decided to stay in the historical capital of Valletta. This is the main old city of the country and where everyone will visit at some point during their Malta trip. If you don’t plan on renting a car and are only in Malta for a short few days like myself, then I’d highly recommend staying in Valletta. There are many Airbnb and hotel options in the old town.

Valletta City

Map of the itinerary

Getting from Malta Airport to Valletta

The airport is very close to Valletta. There are essentially three modes of transportation: taxi, bus, and shuttles.

Taxis and shuttles

The easiest way to get to the city is of course taxis. They will be waiting outside the terminal and have a flat rate of €20 one way. It’s about a 20 minute drive into the city. Alternatively, you can save a few euros by taking a group shuttle van. These will make multiple stops depending on where the other visitors go and costs €14 one way. This is better for solo travelers but if you’re a couple, you’d save money by using the taxi.

Malta’s most widely used form of public transport, bus routes, is accessible right outside the arrivals terminal of Malta International Airport, and the bus to Valletta is the  X4 route . This bus route is available between around 5:56am and 10:55pm and passes from the Airport bus terminus every 20 or 30 minutes, depending on the time of day.

Valletta Bus Station

While definitely the cheapest option (€2.00 for a single journey between mid-June and mid-October and €1.50 during the rest of the year), it’s not the quickest. The bus drops off at the main Valletta bus terminal and from here you would have to walk to your accommodations in Valletta or transfer to another bus (at no extra cost) if you’re staying in the surrounding towns.

Getting around Malta

Malta is an island nation that is roughly 20km by 15km

To rent a car or not in Malta?

Many people rent cars in Malta as it is the perfect way to explore Malta’s beautiful coastline and beaches. Car rentals are also super cheap. I saw rates for €10-15 a day for a standard car. However, I think with 3 to 4 days, a car is probably not necessary especially if you’re more keen to explore the old cities. Driving in Valletta for example is completely unnecessary as it is a small city center with everything in walking distance.

Next time, I would definitely rent a car so I could explore the nature part Malta, but I think not having a car is totally doable.

Getting around by Bus

Malta has a pretty extensive network of buses that travel all around the island. I took the bus to visit Mdina, and to go to the Gozo ferry station. Buses all congregate at the main bus terminal right outside of the entrance gates of Valletta. It can be a bit confusing at first as there are three main “areas” for bus pickup. I was walking around the main part of the bus station (terminal A) looking for my buses with no luck. Turns out I just had to keep walking, take a left, and there were terminals B and C where most of the buses I needed were located.

They mostly came on time and for the price of €1.50 a ride, it was hard to beat. You pay on the bus so make sure to have change ready to go.

Day 1-2: Exploring Valletta

Onto the itinerary! I arrived at night on a Friday so there was not much to do as far as sightseeing on the first night. I dropped off my bags and went to have dinner at a quaint Maltese restaurant nearby before going to bed so I could explore bright and early the next morning.

Valletta Streets

Valletta’s modern day architecture dates back to the 16th century and the city now falls under a UNESCO world heritage sight.  Valletta very much feels like an old  European city due its Baroque architecture, however you’ll find evidence of British rule, including iconic red telephone booths that you find all over London.

Entrance into Valletta City

Valletta is impossibly charming

Every alleyway and street is full of charm, so be sure to look for the pregnant windows, a Maltese classic that you might spot in movies that tried to pass off Valletta as another European city. I started my exploration in the morning (around 8am) which was fantastic. The day trippers staying outside of Valletta come later on and it can get very crowded, especially in the summertime.

Architecture of Valletta

For the first few hours, I was just completely mesmerized by the impossibly quaint and picturesque architecture of the city. You can find alleyway after alleyway of just cobble stone streets, elaborate baroque buildings, picturesque balconies and everything else you’d think of when visiting an old European city. There are of course many sights to see in Valletta, but I think just walking around the town away from the main tourist area is a total treat. I felt like I was in Game of Thrones the entire time, which funny enough was filmed all over the island!

Valletta is right on the Mediterranean as well

St John’s Cathedral

St Johns is the obligatory must visit museum/church/cathedral of Valletta. If you like churches/cathedrals in any capacity, then you should visit this one because it is quite spectacular.

St John's Cathedral from the outisde

The details, colors, art, and richly ornamented Baroque architectures make this place perhaps one of the most visually stunning churches in the world. I’m not an expert in European churches but I have seen a lot of them and I was blown away by the detailing here.

View of the St Johns Cathedral from above

It’s €12 for adults to enter this catehdral and this comes with a free audio guide. If you follow all the guides stops, it will take roughly 1 hour to get through it. Be sure to see Caravaggio’s highly famous painting of the  ‘Beheading of St John the Baptist’  located in the side right chapel.

St John's Cathedral Malta Valletta

Barrakka Gardens

Be sure not to miss the stunning  Upper Barrakka Gardens , which give you panoramic views of the Harbor.  Originally these gardens were used by the Knight of St. John, who are responsible for building Valletta.  Note: The closer you are to the tourist attractions, the more that you’ll find prices for basics will rise.

Barrakka Gardens of Valletta

After enjoying the Upper Barrakka gardens, be sure to pass by the elaborate buildings along Triq-In Nosfsinhar, which mostly belong to the government.   Valletta is small and walkable, so meander the narrow streets until you find  St. John’s Cathedral , which dates back to the 15th century.

View of the Valletta skyline from the gardens

Of particular note is the  Palace of the Grand Master , which is the administrative capital of Malta since 1571.  Originally used by the Knights of St. John for governing, it was also used using British colonialist times for the government.  Now, this building is used by the House of Representatives in Malta.  Even if you don’t enter to visit the Armory (8 euros), the exterior is worth admiring.

Nice photo opp in the Barrakka Gardens of the city!

Be sure to stop off at the  Lower Barrakka Gardens  for scenic and romantic views over the water, especially around sunset. For the iconic shot of Valletta from the water, consider taking the  Sliema ferry .

Eat the Pastizzi

One of the most traditional Maltese dishes is the snack pastizzi. It’s a flaky pastry stuffed with either ricotta cheese, or mashed peas. Nowadays, they also have ones with chicken and mushroom. To me, it is a combination of a croissant and an empanada. It is absolutely delicious and absolutely terrible for you.

Your standard Pastizzi stand that can be found everywhere in Valletta

They are readily available all over Valletta at little side stores specializing in Pastizzis, all the cafes, and even some restaurants. I would stick to eating a pastizzi at the little stores dedicated to this food as they only cost 0.50 euros each! You can eat them at all times of the day and they were the perfect breakfast snack with a coffee. I ate about 5 of them the first day and felt ill so I do not recommend eating more than 3.

Maltese cuisine is closely tied to the Sicilian region of Italy. Therefore, make sure to also have lots of canoli which you can find anywhere on the street like this delicious one with pistachios!

Canoli malta

Eat the Maltese Style Rabbit

Another very traditional Maltese dish is Rabbit. They prepare it numerous ways including fried or in a wine sauce reduction but they are all delicious. I went to a restaurant called Rubino in Valletta that had an absolutely delicious Rabbit dish. Traditionally, it is eaten with hands and the waiters recommend it that way so I couldn’t say no. Highly recommend this!

Maltese Rabbit at Rubino in Valletta

Day 1-2: Exploring Mdina – The Old Town

The Mdina is the old town in Malta. To me, Valletta already looks like the picturesque old town that you would seek out in an European city but the Mdina of Malta is even more old and even more old town-esque.

Mdina valletta entrance malta

From Valletta, take the 51, 52, 53, or 54 bus to the Rabat stop (bus comes every 15 minutes) where you can walk 500 meters to the entrance gates to the Mdina. The bus ride takes 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on which bus you get. The Mdina is very small and you can walk the whole thing in 20 minutes. It’s very tranquil here unlike the hordes in Valletta. There are 300 people that live in Mdina and I only found that out after Googling it as it seemed like there could not possibly be people that lived there.

Walking through the streets of Mdina

I spent some time just leisurely strolling through the narrow winding roads chalk full of cobblestone streets and impressive Baroque buildings. Game of Thrones filmed numerous scenes in the Mdina including the beheading of Ned Stark at the end of the first season. I made sure to retrace my steps and find where those locations were as well!

ANother pretty church in the Mdina

I’d also recommend having a drink at the Fontanella Tea Garden for expansive views of the Maltese countryside.

Views of the Maltese countryside

Day 3: Gozo Day trip

My Maltese friends all told me I had to visit Gozo. Gozo is a smaller island the north of Malta. They are all part of the same country but Gozo offers a much slower, and chilled vibe compared to Malta. My friend told me Gozo is what Malta was like 30 years ago before massive foreign investment and development took over. There is only 30,000 people on the entire island and things run at a different speed.

The Gozo countryside

Gozo was primarily a getaway for people from Malta in the past. Nowadays, Gozo is a frequent visit for tourists, with some completely bypassing Malta and only staying on Gozo. From amazing natural landscapes, to amazing historical sights, and spectacular diving, there is something in Gozo for everyone. Gozo makes for a perfect day trip.

How to get to Gozo from Valletta

I would highly recommend starting this day trip early. With all the things to see on Gozo, I would try and leave Valletta around 8-9am at the latest. From Valletta, it is roughly 1.5-2 hours to get to Gozo.

Take the #41 or #42 bus from the Valletta bus terminal to the last stop (just over an hour) which is the ferry terminal of Cirkewwa. From the ferry terminal, boats leave regularly throughout the day. The ferry is €5 for a round trip ticket (credit cards accepted) and is a 30 minute ferry ride.

Gozo ferry malta

The ferry ride offers you stunning views of Malta, Gozo, and Comino. Make sure to go to the upper deck and appreciate the views!

Gozo Ferry

Take the hop on hop off bus

If you’re only visiting for the day and do not have a car, the best way to see the highlights of the island is to take the hop on hop off bus. The island is still quite big and it’s not possible to bike or walk the island and see anything. The public bus is also an option but for those with just a few hours on the island, you will not see as much as you can with this tourist bus.

Gozo hop on hop off bus map

I bought a ticket on the ferry ride from Malta. They have a stand for the hop on hop off bus which was selling a day ticket for €15. I went in April so not peak season, and they may try to charge you more during the summers. With the hop on hop off bus, it visits 12 different sights around the island and buses come every 45 minutes. This means, you can stop off anywhere, visit for 45 minutes, and take another bus to the next destination (or 90 minutes if you really like it).

Mgarr Ferry Terminal

Where to go in Gozo

I arrived in Gozo around 11am and immediately started the tour from the port town of Mgarr, Gozo. The last bus is around 6pm so you need to make sure you finish your tour before then or you’ll have to figure out how to use the public transport or take a taxi back to the ferry. Ferries run until late at night.

Gozo countryside

There are a total of 14 stops and I stopped at a few of them. The highlights in my opinion are Xewkija, Victoria/Rabat, Dwejra, Xlendi, Ggantija Temples and Ramla. The other stops were not so interesting for me but I could also be wrong as well!

Ta'Pinu Church gozo

Dwejra at the western tip of the island was famous for the azure windows, a stunning natural arch portruding from the bluffs. It unfortunately collapsed in 2017 so there is literally no remnants of the arch anymore. It is still worth a stop to take a canoe trip into the caves as well as if you are a scuba diver, this is where you can dive the infamous Gozo blue hole, not to be confused with the Great Blue Hole of Belize , or the Blue Hole in Dahab !

azure windows gozo malta

Day 4: Exploring Marsaxlokk

Depending on your day, I recommend leaving Gozo earlier to have time to head towards Marsaxlokk, one of the gems of Malta that you cannot miss during your three to four day trip to Malta. Even if you only have a few hours, this place is worth it (and a few hours is all you really need).

Marsaxlokk

It will take roughly 30-45 minutes from Valletta making it a quick little half day trip. The seafood and fish available here is the best according to my Airbnb host and Maltese friends. Makes sense as this is where all the fisherman are!

Marsaxlokk at sunset!

Marsaxlokk is an easy day trip from Valletta if you have an evening flight and prefer to stay in Valletta, otherwise you can do it as a half day trip prior to departing for the airport. Among the countless other amazing view points, add Marsaxlokk to the “Most Instagrammbale places in the world” to your list. If it matters to you that is!

  • On this trip you must pack as lightly as possible because you will be expected to carry your own bag and although you won't be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), we strongly recommend keeping the weight under 15kg / 33lb. Most travellers carry their luggage in a backpack, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would suffice if you travel lightly. Smaller bags or backpacks with wheels are convenient although we recommend your bag has carry straps to accommodate the cobbled streets, uneven surfaces, stairs and steps you are likely to encounter while carrying your luggage. You'll also need a day pack/bag to carry water and a camera etc for day trips.

Welcome to Malta! Your adventure starts in Valletta – this little capital city packs a real punch when it comes to historical sights and top-drawer attractions. A meeting will take place today at 6pm at your hotel where you’ll meet your local leader and the other members of your group. If you arrive with time to spare, you may like to pay a visit to the National Museum of Archaeology, or perhaps take a stroll along the restaurant-lined waterfront. After your meeting, why not get to know your group over a meal in town – your leader will be able to recommend some great spots to eat. Aljotta (fish soup) and Gbejniet (Maltese cheese) are particularly delicious!

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

This morning, meet up with a local guide from Valletta who will let you in on local secrets as you explore the city on foot. Stop by a traditional cafe and sample some tasty Maltese pour-over coffee. Once you’re energized, continue with a visit to the St. John's Co-Cathedral and learn about the city’s fascinating connection to the Order of the Knights of St. John. Then, swing by the Upper Barrakka Gardens, a beautiful public space with a history stretching back to the 16th century. From the gardens, ride a large elevator down to the Grand Harbour, taking in incredible views as you descend, then say goodbye to your guide and hop aboard a ferry with your leader to explore the rest of the city. Take a step back in time as you discover the area brimming with ancient churches, palaces and noble homes, walk the winding streets and find remnants of Malta’s turbulent past. Return to Valletta and enjoy the rest of the afternoon for your own.

The Best Things to Do in Malta

Malta may be one of the smallest countries in the world, but it certainly doesn't lack in things to do. The three-island archipelago is located a little over 100 mile south of Sicily in the Mediterranean and includes the islands of Malta, Gozo, and Comino. For such a small area, though, there are a surprising number of historic sites -ranging from megalithic temples said to date back to the 4th millennium B.C. to medieval fortresses and walled cities-and are a major draw for visitors. But activities in Malta are not limited to visiting relics of the past. The Mediterranean nation has natural wonders to explore (both above and below water), festivals to attend, and nightlife to partake in.

From rock climbing and swimming in the Mediterranean to wandering the ancient ruins of various centuries, here are some of the best things to do in Malta.

For getting to know Malta's history and ancient past

1. spend a day exploring the city of valletta and its landmarks.

  • Where : Valletta

Given Malta's strategic location and succession of rulers-from the Romans, Normans, and Sicilians to the Spanish, Knights of St. John, French, and British-it's somewhat surprising to find Valletta so well-preserved. The capital city dates back to the 16th century and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980. When it was recognized as the European Capital of Culture in 2018, several historic landmarks, such as the city gate at the entrance to Valletta, underwent extensive restoration. When visiting save a day for wandering the city to see such landmarks as:

Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel : At nearly 138 feet high, the dome of the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel looms large on the city skyline. Although the church itself dates back to 1570, it was badly damaged during World War II and only reopened in its current form in 1981 after 23 years of rebuilding.

St. John's Co-Cathedral : The church is named a co-cathedral because the bishop of Malta also sits at St. Paul's Cathedral in Mdina. One of the world's must-visit churches, it features a glittering gold interior that represents the pinnacle of high baroque architecture, plus eight chapels dedicated to the eight branches of the Knights of Malta. History buffs will want to explore the crypt, while art lovers will appreciate the ceiling frescoes by Mattia Preti. Tickets include entrance to the attached museum.

2. Visit the National Museum of Archaeology

Housed in the baroque Auberge de Provence, the National Museum of Archaeology features a collection dating as far back as 5200 B.C., during the Neolithic period. Through such objects as delicate stone tools and Phoenician amulets, it provides a solid introduction to Malta's prehistoric history and adds context to many of the historical sites around the island. It's a perfect starting point for a tour of Valletta, and the small museum is easily be explored in an hour.

3. Upper Barrakka Gardens

One of Valletta's most scenic spots, the Upper Barrakka Gardens has memorable views of the Grand Harbour, the fortified cities of Senglea and Birgu across the harbor, and the shipyards below. Every day at noon, members of the Malta Heritage Society dress in British military uniforms and fire a ceremonial gun [cannon] salute. Visitors can stroll by beautiful fountains, and there is plenty of manicured green space for picnics. Take an elevator which connects the gardens to the Valletta waterfront, or perhaps ride the elevator at dusk to watch the sun setting over the city's rooftops and the Mediterranean.

History buffs won't want to miss the Lascaris War Rooms, a collection of tunnels and chambers 150 feet beneath the Upper Barrakka Gardens, that served as the secret headquarters for Allied operations during World War II. Commanders stationed here oversaw some of the most ambitious campaigns in the Mediterranean, including the 1943 invasion of Sicily. After the war, the War Rooms were used by the Mediterranean fleet of the Royal Navy.

4. Go back in time in the medieval town of Mdina

  • Where : Mdina

Plan to spend at least an afternoon wandering the streets of the walled city of Mdina (also known as the Silent City), which was founded in the 8th century A.D. and served as the nation's capital until medieval times. These days fewer than 100 people live in Mdina, though the walled city remains a popular tourist attraction. After your visit, make a stop at Coogi's Restaurant & Tea Garden for lunch or a quick drink while enjoying views of the surrounding farms on the other side of the city's walls.

Game of Thrones fans will be interested to know that Mdina was one of many filming locations for the series.

5. Tour St. Paul's Catacombs

  • Where : Rabat

Located on the outskirts of Mdina in Rabat, St. Paul's Catacombs are an homage to Paul the apostle. Paul and 274 others were shipwrecked just off Malta around 60 A.D. on their way to Rome . Legend has it that the survivors took refuge in a grotto, above which a church and monument were later built in the apostle's honor. The Catacombs, which represent the earliest evidence of Christianity in Malta, are a labyrinthine set of underground cemeteries. Covering an area of over 21,000 square feet, the catacombs twist and turn with dozens of hypogea (chambers) once used for burials.

6. Explore the Cittadella

  • Where : Victoria, Gozo

The site of the Cittadella on the island of Gozo is thought to have been inhabited since Neolithic time and more certainly by the Bronze Age. The land was used by the Romans for a settlement. The Cittadella is a fortified citadel, which overlooks Gozo's current capital of Victoria.

A walk through the striking limestone structure is a must when visiting Gozo. While wandering the grounds, notice the holy shrines under the Norman-style arches and the doors adorned with a coat of arms. Up on the ramparts, you'll find a 360-degree view of Gozo's hills, valleys, and villages, with the Mediterranean in the distance. There are also various on-site churches and museums to visit, such as the cave-like Gunpowder Magazine, where gunpowder was stored in the late 17th and 18th centuries.

Other nearby historic sites worth a stop in Gozo include the ornate St. George's Basilica , which tops the hill at the heart of Victoria and the baroque Cathedral of the Assumption, enclosed within the walls of the Cittadella.

7. The Ggantija Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

  • Where : Gozo

The Ggantija Temples , named after the Maltese word for "giant," are the oldest and most impressive of the megalithic temples in the Maltese islands. Built during the Neolithic period from coralline limestone, the ruins are more than 5,500 years old, predating Stonehenge-and even the pyramids of Egypt. This UNESCO World Heritage site was recently restored; it is visitor friendly with walkways and a new center featuring displays of prehistoric artifacts from across Gozo.

For experiencing Malta's more current culture, food, and nightlife

8. shop for gifts and snacks on and near merchants street.

Stalls at the busy Merchants Street Market, which is open every morning of the week, sell traditional Maltese crafts alongside bargain clothing, jewelry, and other gifts. Right off Merchants Street is the Is-Suq Tal-Belt Valletta Food Market, an indoor collection of food stalls ideal for sampling Maltese food . Swing by Lot 61 Coffee Roasters across the street from the food market for a cup of some of the best brew in the city.

9. Watch live music at Bridge Bar or Cafe Society

Valletta by day may be all about sightseeing and jostling with crowds of day-trippers from docked cruise ships, but nighttime in the capital city is an entirely different experience. On warm nights in particular, the nightlife spills out from the city's bars and restaurants onto the streets. On these evenings, join the locals lounging on city steps and enjoy a drink and live music at establishments like Bridge Bar or Cafe Society .

10. Attend a festival

  • Where : Nationwide

It's easy to time a visit to Malta with a festival, thanks to a diverse calendar of events . For a more traditional cultural experience, time your trip for " festa season "-a series of extended weekends that runs from the end of May to September-when towns and villages throughout Malta celebrate the feast of their respective patron saints with papier-mâché statues, Maltese delicacies, and fireworks.

However, some of the more standout events worth planning a trip around include Birgu Fest and Notte Bianca , both annual festivals that take place in October. Birgu Fest is a festival in which the entire old city of Vittoriosa, also known as Birgu, turns off all of its lights and illuminates the city's ancient walls and cobblestone streets by candlelight. Notte Bianca, also a nighttime festival, takes place in Valletta but is more focused on music and partying than the romance of candlelight. If you happen to visit in February, grab a costume and head to Nadur, Gozo, for its macabre Carnival celebrations .

For getting out to see Malta's natural beauty

11. take a boat tour to the blue grotto or blue lagoon.

  • Where : Qrendi (Malta) or Comino

No trip to Malta would be complete without an excursion on the Mediterranean, and one of the most enjoyable ways to experience it is with a boat tour. If you're short on time, take a taxi or drive to the coastal town of Qrendi, where you can hop on a quick 30-minute boat tour to the Blue Grotto, an oceanside cave.

If you have at least a day to spare, it's worthwhile to sign up for a longer boat tour to see the Blue Lagoon, located on the uninhabited island of Comino, which is the archipelago's smallest. There are both day and half-day trips to the Blue Lagoon and Comino departing from either Valletta or Gozo.

12. Walk along the Xwejni Salt Pans on Gozo

  • Where : Qbajjar Bay, Gozo

On the northern coast of Gozo, visitors can get a fascinating introduction to one of the island's most important traditions: sea salt production. Just past Qbajjar Bay is a nearly two-mile stretch of 350-year-old salt pans, which remain a vital source of income for Gozitans to this day. In the summer, locals scrape up salt crystals, and store them in nearby caves for later use. Several Gozitan businesses package the salt in gift jars, which are available for purchase in many of the island's souvenir stores.

13. Take a scenic drive on Gozo

Gozo is mostly an agrarian island, so you won't find any big cities here. Instead, focus on exploring the outdoors, and in particular the seaside cliffs and rock formations, scattered about the island. The most famous is the Azure Window, a rock archway that collapsed in 2017 . Even so, visitors still flock to the location to see its remnants. Equally stunning, though less well-known, are Wied il-Għasri a beautiful sea canyon you can hike to and swim in and Wied Il-Mielaħ a (still-standing) natural rock arch perched above the sea, both of which are on the north coast of Gozo.

14. Go for a swim in the Mediterranean

  • Where : Various

You won't find many white, sandy beaches on Malta or its two smaller islands, but that doesn't mean there aren't any great areas for swimming and beach days-quite the opposite. Grab a beach blanket or towel and spread out on the rocks at Paradise Bay, Wied Iż-Żurrieq, or St. Peter's Pool in Malta. If you're on Gozo, head to Xlendi.

If you go to St. Peter's Pool, end your day with a seafood meal in Marsaxlokk at casual eatery Skuna or the slightly more upscale restaurant Tartarun . On Sundays, the town has its weekly fish market. Though often touted as a great tourist attraction in Malta, it's okay to skip unless you're buying fish to cook later.

15. Rock climb its coastal cliffs

Malta's seaside cliffs may not always be great for lounging, but they are excellent for rock climbing. If you'd like to try your hand at this adventurous sport, sign up for a tour with Gozo Adventures in Gozo or MC Adventure in Malta. The guides with both tour companies are very experienced and friendly, and have options suitable for all levels-from total newbies to experienced outdoor climbers.

1. Tried to create an account on Tallinja App (newish phone, Android S23), "something went wrong." I'll keep trying but I assume I can buy cards on arrival (but I won't be able to top up because I won't add my credit card from nonsecure WiFi overseas). Just keep buying cards as needed?

Related- do I need a separate bus pass for Gozo?

I'm thinking about renting a scooter for a day to see some of the more remote sights and beaches- is this safer than Maltese roads in general?

2. Unfortunately I did not purchase advance tickets to Hypogeum, they are now sold out for my trip dates. Best way to buy last minute tickets, if available? Is there anything else I should make sure to buy in advance? (I'm planning to visit as many of the ancient archaeological sites as I can fit in, the Archaeological Museum, plus the major WW2, Templar, and some religious sites.)

3. I'll be taking ferry to/from Gozo. Do I need to purchase advance tickets?

I'd love to swim Blue Lagoon on the way there or back, but I'll have luggage- is there a way to safely store luggage on the boat? Or should I just try to arrange a separate half day trip to swim/ kayak (I'm already diving 2 days from Gozo, so scheduling is a little tight.)

Just buy 7 day ticket ( twice ) and use those . They can be obtained from the airport arrivals.

You do not need to book advance tickets for the Cirkewwa ---- Gozo ferr in fact you pay on the return sailing and just board on the outbound .

You do not need a separate bus pass for Gozo. The 7 day one can be used there..

The Malta at War museum in Birgu is interesting as it shows how the Maltese people lived during the bombings .

You will not fond any Templar sites as the Knights Templars were never in Malta . The Knights of St John of Jerusalem amd Malta --- often Known as the Knights Of Malta were there ,

Fort St Angelo was an historic site.

Can`t help you about the Blue Lagoon as being a non swimmer I have never been

Perhaps somebody else can come on with some advice .

Have an enjoyable stay.

Thank you for the info!

Re point 2 - some last minute tickets are put on sale for the Hypogeum - you have to queue early the day before to get them - they cost extra

Thanks, I see from your link they are on sale at Fort St. Elmo, arrive very early!! Hopefully I will manage to score, at least I only need one.

Updated: Government unveils masterplan for Gozo general hospital

travel malta to gozo

A new masterplan for the Gozo general hospital was revealed on Friday by the Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo-Etienne Abela.

The minister said that on one side of the hospital, geological investigations are taking place to ensure that it is safe to build on. The master plan shows that a new acute hospital is going to be built, which will have a capacity for 400 beds.

Until works are complete, the current hospital will continue operating as is. The plan is also for the current hospital building to also be demolished and replaced by other plans.

Currently, the government said that it is in the planning phase, and that the project will cost around €153 million. The masterplan also includes a research centre, a rehabilitation centre, an anatomy centre and a child development assessment unit.

The Gozo General Hospital was, until recently, under the management of Steward Health Care. It was one of three hospitals that formed part of a concession, whereby Steward, and before them Vitals Global Healthcare, was given control over them. The government paid millions of taxpayers' funds to the concessionaire. The concessionaire was meant to build a new building at the hospital.

Last year, the courts annulled the hospitals deal, in a judgement that mentioned fraud, a decision that was confirmed by the Court of Appeal in a judgement that mentioned collusion.

"The court understands that the works of a new building at the Gozo General Hospital has not been concluded by this date," the court judgement that annulled the hospitals deal read.

When questioned about how the government is planning to recover its credibility in the sector following the courts' judgement on the hospitals deal, he said that "health" does not look at controversy or elections, "but only towards the future".

He said that the masterplan announced on Friday is the Government's vision for the future, and that Gozitans need a new hospital.

In a statement, the Nationalist Party said that the new Gozo Hospital should have been built by Steward, and so it should have already been completed.

It is thanks to the PN that the Gozo Hospital was returned to the public, and therefore it is thanks to the PN that the government's project can be planned.
