Nomadic Matt: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Better

My 31 Favorite Places to Visit in the USA

The colorful rocks of the Grand Canyon during sunset

From sea to shining sea, the United States is home to a diverse landscape — both culturally and physically. Spending months traveling across it gave me a deep appreciation for all my country has to offer.

After traveling across the continental United States as part of multiple cross-country road trips (you never really realize how big Texas is until you drive through it. Damn that state is big!), I wanted to share some of my favorite places in the United States with you. I’ve already talked about my favorite restaurants and lessons learned , so it only seems proper to give you a list of the best places to visit in the USA when you come and travel here!

To help you get started, here’s a quick overview of some of the highlights:

Best destination for foodies: New Orleans Best destination for partying: Miami or Las Vegas Best destination for hiking/nature: Glacier National Park Best destination for history: Natchez Best destination for museums: Washington, D.C. or New York City Best destination for families: The Grand Canyon

In no particular order, here’s my detailed list of the best places to visit in the USA:

( Note: This list is based only on where I myself have been. There are a lot more incredibly breathtaking places I haven’t explored yet, which is why you don’t see them on this list!)

The restaurants of Memphis, Tennessee lit up at night

WHERE TO STAY IN MEMPHIS : Hostel Memphis – A hip hostel in a century-old building with a fully-equipped kitchen and free Wi-Fi. The hostel is also a non-profit that donates 100% of its profit to social justice causes around the city.

Austin, Texas skyline at dusk shining over the water

Thanks to everything from the growing food truck population to the flagship Whole Foods store with the incredible salad bar (grilled pineapple!), I eat — and eat well — nonstop. The Austin campus of the University of Texas provides a youthful vigor to the city, and its liberal attitude attracts a diverse and eclectic population. In short, you can’t skip Austin, because if you do, I’ll find you and drag you there.

WHERE TO STAY IN AUSTIN : Firehouse Hostel – This centrally-located hostel is located in an old firehall from 1885. They have fast Wi-Fi, plenty of chill common areas, and an amazing on-site bar that serves top-notch craft cocktails.

3. New Orleans

The beautiful and historic buildings of New Orleans, USA at night

WHERE TO STAY IN NOLA : HI New Orleans – An award-winning hostel with spacious dorms, comfy beds, privacy curtains, and fast Wi-Fi. Everything a budget traveler needs!

4. Asheville

A massive old mansion surrounded by visitors in Asheville, North Carolina

If you’ve ever seen Downton Abbey, that’s what the house is like! (And, if you haven’t, you should! The show is addicting!)

WHERE TO STAY IN ASHEVILLE : Bon Paul & Sharky’s – A laid-back hsotel with a spacious front and back porch for relaxing. There’s free parking, free Wi-Fi, and plenty of nearby restaurants and cafes.

5. The Pacific Coastal Drive

A scenic view of the Pacific Ocean from the Pacific Coastal Drive

WHERE TO STAY ON THE PACFIC COAST HIGHWAY : Airbnb – Airbnb is your best bet here, unless you have camping gear and want to camp in one of the many parks. There are also lots of cheap motels along the highway too.

6. Redwood National Park

Towering redwood trees in the Redwood National Park, California during the day

WHERE TO STAY IN REDWOOD NATIONAL PARK : View Crest Lodge – Located on the coast in Trinidad, this rustic budget-friendly lodge has basic amenities like free Wi-Fi and TV, and some of their rooms also have full kitchens. It’s a clean, comfy no-frills place to crash for a night.

7. Glacier National Park

Calm waters and snow-capped mountains in Glacier National Park

The downtown Denver, Colorado skyline lit up at night

WHERE TO STAY IN DENVER : Ember Hostel – This boutique hostel is rated one of the best in the country, offering a swank interior, free jacuzzi, outdoor firepit, comfy beds with blackout curtains, free parking, and more.

The famous bean sculpture in Chicago, Illinois shining at night

And once the winter deep freeze is over, Chicagoans burst out of their homes to enjoy the summer weather, so there’s a positive, happy vibe emanating through the city. Take advantage of it.

WHERE TO STAY IN CHICAGO : HI Chicago – A spacious, clean hostel with female-only dorms, free Wi-Fi, and a great location. The beds are comfy and the common area is huge so it’s easy to meet people.

10. New York City

The iconic skyline of NYC on a bright summer day

WHERE TO STAY IN NYC : Jazz on the Park – Located near Central Park on the Upper West Side, this no-frills hostel is close to the train and is one of the more affordable places in the city. The dorms are basic and the beds aren’t winning any awards but it’s cheap (for NYC at least!).

11. Natchez

A bright orange sunset over the water near Natchez, Mississippi

Now, they are historic monuments, and you can tour them while enjoying a view of the Mississippi River. It’s far off the beaten path — and my favorite discovery from my last road trip.

WHERE TO STAY IN NATCHEZ : The Guest House Historic Mansion – If you want to splash out, this 19th-century mansion includes free breakfast and spacious historic rooms as well as modern amenities like Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and flatscreen TVs.

For more travel tips on the Grand Canyon, read this post on hiking the canyon .

14. Nashville

A lively street of music bars in Nashville, Tennessee at night

There’s not a lot of “touristy stuff” to do here, but what makes this city one of my favorites are the music, the food, the wildly friendly and happy people, and the positive energy the city seems to exude. When you’re here, plan to spend a few hours at the Tennessee State Museum. It goes into great (though sometimes very one-sided) detail about the state’s history, but it’s more exciting than you might think.

WHERE TO STAY IN NASHVILLE : Red Roof Inn – While it’s not centrally located, this is one of the city’s few affordable two-star options. A quick 13-minute drive from the Grand Ole Opry, this budget-friendly joint boasts an outdoor pool, free Wi-Fi, and free coffee.

15. San Francisco

Looking up at the Golden Gate Bridge from the San Francisco Beach in the summer

WHERE TO STAY IN SAN FRANCISCO : Green Tortoise – As one of the oldest in town, this hostel is an institution in San Francisco. It offers free breakfast, free dinners multiple times per week, and even a free sauna! It has a huge common room so it’s easy to meet people and has a very fun, social atmosphere.

Wide and spacious beach on the coast of Miami, Florida

WHERE TO STAY IN MIAMI : Generator Miami – This hostel has a pool, two restaurants, a bar, and is just minutes away from the beach. It’s massive (there are 8 floors), the beds are more comfortable than the cheap ones you’ll find at the party hostels.

For more travel tips on Miami, check out this detailed planning guide !

17. San Diego

A tall wooden pier on the San Diego beach during sunset

The downtown Gaslamp area — as well as the famous Pacific Beach — is full of trendy seafood restaurants, bustling bars, and some seriously life-changing taco stalls. I love San Diego .

WHERE TO STAY IN SAN DIEGO : ITH Adventure Hostel – With a focus on sustainable travel (there’s a vegetable garden and backyard chickens), this chill hostel is very friendly and social. It’s clean, and the water pressure in the showers is decent, and the beds are comfy too.

19. Lake Tahoe

A sweeping view of the forests around Lake Tahoe in California

WHERE TO STAY IN LAKE TAHOE : Camping – Pack (or rent) a tent and cozy up for a few nights under the stars. You won’t be disappointed.

21. Washington D.C.

The White House in Washington, D.C

A historic statue surrounded by flowers in Boston, Massachusetts

It’s home to a ton of activities, like the Freedom Trail and Faneuil Hall, the JFK Museum, and the Boston Commons and Public Garden, as well as some of the best Italian and seafood restaurants in the country. Be sure to eat at Zaftigs for the best brunch in the city! It’s wicked!

WHERE TO STAY IN BOSTON : HI Boston – This spacious and clean hostel is just a short walk from pretty much everything in the city. They have female-only dorms, free Wi-Fi, and several chill common areas where you can meet other travelers.

24. Las Vegas

The glamorous hotels and casinos of the Las Vegas strip lit up at night

WHERE TO STAY IN LAS VEGAS : Sin City Hostel – Just a short walk from the (in)famous Fremont Street, this is a social hostel that hosts all kinds of events (such as bar crawls, pasta & wine nights, BBQs, casino nights, and more). It’s a great place to connect with other travelers.

A sunny public plaza in Portland, Oregon with people walking around

WHERE TO STAY IN PORTLAND : HI Portland – Northwest – Rated one of the best hostels in the world, this centrally-located HI hostel offers free breakfast, in-house made craft beer, an outdoor courtyard with a firepit, regular live music, and much more. It’s a lively, social, and fun place to stay!

For more travel tips on Portland, read this post on the city .

26. Seattle

Neon Public Market sign lit up at night in Seattle, Washington

WHERE TO STAY IN SEATTLE : Green Tortoise – Located right across from the iconic Pike Place Market, this social hostel organizes all kinds of activities so it’s easy to meet people. They also offer free breakfast — a rare perk in the US!

For more travel tips on Seattle, read this detailed planning guide !

27. Deadwood

The snowy main street of the historic town of Deadwood, South Dakota

WHERE TO STAY IN DEADWOOD : Gold Country Inn – This kitschy hotel is one of the cheapest places in town. Located right downtown, they have a mini gambling hall on-site, free Wi-Fi, and free parking. It’s nothing fancy but it won’t break the bank either.

28. Kansas City

The exterior of Joe's BBQ in Kansas City, Missouri

WHERE TO STAY IN KANSAS CITY : Home2 Suites Downtown – With a fitness center, pool, and a decent breakfast spread, this three-star hotel in downtown KC is one of the more affordable places to crash in the city.

29. Louisville

An old steamboat docked on the river in Louisville, USA

Louseiville has a laid-back, artsy vibe to it. It feels much more like an Austin or a Portland than your traditional southern/midwest city. In the past, it was considered a fly-over city and was skipped by most people. It’s definitely not now.

WHERE TO STAY IN LOUISVILLE : Microtel Inn – While it may be 20 minutes from downtown, this budget-friendly inn is affordable, includes free breakfast and free parking, and has free Wi-Fi. It’s a no-frills choice but clean and comfy.

30. Charleston

A quiet sidestreet lined by trees in Charleston, USA

WHERE TO STAY IN CHARLESTON : Charlestons NotSo Hostel – Located in a historic neighborhood, this laid-back hostel includes free coffee/tea and oatmeal and free Wi-Fi. The rooms are small but the beds are perfectly comfy.

31. Franklin

Downtown in Franklin, Tennessee, USA

WHERE TO STAY IN FRANKLIN : The Harpeth Hotel – This upscale property features a restaurant on-site, fitness center, bar, and terrace. If you don’t want to splash out, check Booking.com for other options.

The United States is filled with too many “must-sees” places to visit to list in a single blog post. After all, the country is home to over 329 million people and covers 3.8 million square miles.

But for those looking for a starting point for where to go, what to see, and the places to visit, this list should point you in the right direction and fill your time!

Just be sure to turn off the highways, head to the small towns, and discover some favorites of your own. The best of the USA is always away from the major highways in the little no-name towns with little diners, quirky shops, and friendly people!

The itinerary provided by tour radar was not exactly how the tour was set up. One of our stops said we would be doing a cruise on lake Powell. That was not provided with the tour. Also the hotels that they said we would be staying at did not line up.
Overall, the tour was very fun and we'll put together. The tour guides were all friendly, and seemed to work well as a team. Accomodations were not bad, but there were better options directly adjacent. Food options were pretty much all fast food, which makes sense for the tour concept. However, dinner options could have been a bit better. We really would have appreciated a little more hiking and exploring time, and a couple of the guides did the best to accommodate that. However, 20 minute stops are just not enough time to get "out and experience" the areas.

the tour itself was amazing. The national parks do not disappoint. The travel accomodations were very cramped and uncomfortable. I am only 5 foot tall and I was cramped in this 14 passenger van. Food opportunities were limited.
Fantastic experience - efficient use of time, great itinerary. Well-informed and interesting guide who is also just a great person.

Bindlestiff Tours

Bindlestiff Tours

  • Excellent - 1,494 reviews for USA tours
Although the tour guide did a great job, the management at the bindlestiff took the health and well-being of the traveler very lightly. I was forced to share room with a Covid-Positive patient in Bryce, despite there being 4 other same-sex hikers with whom I could have shared room with. In many locations, they had not purchase coupons for showers or had basic amenities like clean water or support help set up the camp tents to suit the weather. the lunch meals were inadequate and very monotonous. More empathetic planning and equipment would enable travelers to feel like they are on a holiday as opposed to a low budgeted school trip.
Excellent & Memorable Experience! Thank You!

Ja, our guide, was fun, professional and knowledgeable about the parks. Ja was well prepared with water, hotel reservations and dining options. This trip exceeded our expectations
It was 5 days of beautiful canyons and scenic highways. Our guide and trainee were wonderfully informative and helpful

Intrepid Travel

Intrepid Travel

The trip on it self is awesome. The parks we visit were stunning. However as I booked with Tour radar, it was not mention anywhere the level of the trip. I knew during the trip that this same trip is advertised as a compfy trip with intensity 2/5 on intrepid website. I found my self with 65 Y+ while Im 35 Y and for the hikes it was inconvenient. Hope it will change on the marketplace.
We were fortunate to have Claire Kredens as our driver guide. She is a gifted leader and could cope with ant situation. Such a tour is useful to learn which cities you might like to re-visit because our time in each is very short. Four and five hour drives every other day is exhausting and maybe the number of places visited could be edited downward. On the whole, I enjoyed the trip altho the age range 15-99 is unwise. 15-80 would be much more realistic.

BrushBuck Wildlife Tours

BrushBuck Wildlife Tours

  • Excellent - 23 reviews for USA tours
Although the tour was very expensive- over $2000 for 3 days is over the top- it wss a great experience, saw lots of wildlife and the guide was outstanding
What an amazing experience this was; from the greeting and pick up by our guide/driver, to the phenomenal sights and the historical references that accompanied them! I am so pleased. This was an exceptionally planned tour that successfully met all of my needs. I would not change a thing and look forward to future adventures with them.

Contiki

  • Excellent - 5,507 reviews for USA tours
The tour was amazing, the manager did a top notch job, it’s great for making lots of friends, such a blast. A little rushed and fast paced, but it’s better than the stress of organising your own trip. Definitely doing it again
I thought it was great and would do it again any time!

Trafalgar

  • Excellent - 1,903 reviews for USA tours
Excellent. Great guide, driver, weather, hotels, food. Great itenirary. Love love this trip.
Optional excursions were reasonably priced. Suggest you put together other places in each city as a walking guide or short taxi or uber ride. Example access to close by museums open late and could walk to from hotel. Free time activities and what they are and where located is helpful.tour guide can offer to accompany a group interested to explore more during free leisure tome.Provide more detail info about the logistics of site visits. Niagara falls..suggest more water proof gear clothing and shoe types etc. Terrain to expect when visiting certain sites and possible alternatives.climbing and how difficult-easy or more strenuous or advanced climbing activity. Overall, small groups so much better than filling up bus. Thank you for giving single travelers their own bus space. Would love to watch more travel videos on longer driving distances.

Infinite Adventures

Infinite Adventures

  • Excellent - 118 reviews for USA tours
It was my first group trip and also my first camping trip. I have to say it was one of the best trips I've been on. It was an adventure! We were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights at Remote Camp. Tory and Dave took care of everything and made sure everyone had a great time. No matter what problem you had, they always helped each other! Dave cooked delicious food, we had marshmallows by the fire in the evening and it felt like family. It's a great tour and I can only recommend it to anyone! It certainly wasn't my last tour with Infinite Adventure! Many thanks to Tory, Dave and Natalie (who you could ask any question you wanted to know beforehand) for this unforgettable time! :)
Jump on the bus with Infinite Adventures for a magnificent Alaskan expedition! Dave and Tory are excellent guides and will keep you informed about the areas you visit and give expert advice. I found this to be a truly joyful experience!

Good time with lots of riding in the van going to interesting places
We had a wonderful time. The tour was well planned and well managed. The CEO was excellent ..good driver, good communicator, had good knowledge of the local attractions and made great recommendations for restaurants. The group we were with was also a very pleasant group which made the experience that much more enjoyable. That said, would have loved to see the accommodations updated.. most except the Denali cabins were old and "weathered".

Insight Vacations

Insight Vacations

Overall it was a good experience. Excellent tour director and driver. The food was inconsistent as to quality and service. The lodgings were fine for the type of trip. Too much time was spent at Monument Valley/Mystery valley and not enough time at Grand Canyon.
My first experience with an organized tour like this. Expense alone will limit future trips. Much more walking than my wife was prepared for. This alone reduced her enjoyment. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and thorough with his planning and execution. Andrew has a fun personality and very personable. One item that disappointed me was the shuttle from airport to resort at both ends of the

Globus

This was our second trip on Globus and both experiences were fantastic.
I was skeptical of a group tour, particularly by coach. The experienced guide, Jason, along with driver Shauna, changed my view completely.

The Coyote Trip

The Coyote Trip

  • Good - 11 reviews for USA tours
This trip was run like a school trip, we were told that we had to stick to the schedule rigidly even though I asked several times to visit a different museum/shop. Free time was limited and it seemed like the guide had specific ideas of what he wanted to do and see. Our guide also left us on a subway in New York to get home close to midnight and then we had issues getting checked into the hostel. FYI most tour guides make sure their group gets to the hotel safely and without hassle. Waste of time and money.
From a speedboat to the Statue of Liberty to fireworks on 4th July in Washington to hiking to Yosemite Falls, this trip showcased the very best the USA has to offer. I went on the 21 day Full Cyote trip from New York to San Francisco with my brother. With such a packed itinerary of included activities, it offered great value for money. The guides in every region we visited were excellent. A particular shout out to Ryan, who added in extra stops and experiences based on the group's interests. Other highlights included the Grand Canyon, Washington's museums, whale watching in Boston, cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge and sunset in Griffeths Park. I met a great group of people on the trip, and I wouldn't hesitate to book with the Cyote Trip again.

Had a wonderful time - a lot of hiking, seeing the sites in Alaska and viewing the Northern Lights.

Irregular Operations (IROPs) training is a priority for all of National Travel’s advisors. Each traveler’s flight interruption, or potential problem, is acted on in real time. On many occasions, our Travel Specialist will have already selected alternate flights for an itinerary as a backup, before the client is even aware of the issue!

Our advantage is that we research and analyze not only one airline or routing, but on multiple airlines and routing options to find the best solution. On a stormy winter day, it is not uncommon for our Concierge Group to act as triage in routing flight status reports to our Travel Advisors, who may have hundreds of these issues to work through during a daily operation. Our services, including the rerouting and re-booking of itineraries impacted by IROPs, are available 24 hours a day, without charge!

USA Cruises

Calling the United States a melting pot gets the imagination going like nothing else. What are you picturing? We’re guessing it’s sprawling cities, iconic landmarks, cultures that have changed the world, rolling highways, cowboys, blue jeans, and everything in between.

Fancy a helping of what makes America such an incredible experience? Let us get you there. Docking at some of the country’s most legendary cities, from the sun-kissed haven of San Francisco to New York’s cosmopolitan expanse , our incredible cruise deals let you see it all, for way less than anywhere else too!

How? By working with some of the best cruise lines in the world, we can bring you one-of-a- kind, chance-of-a-lifetime holidays like no other. Need a little inspiration? Celebrity Cruises’ USA holidays are especially incredible, while a little birdy told us MSC Cruises’ USA offerings are worth having a peek at too...

What’s the weather like in the USA?

The USA is a country of diverse weather patterns, with a variety of climates that make it a wonderful destination to visit year-round! The West Coast is home to sunny cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco, where the temperature remains comfortable throughout the year, making it perfect for exploring the outdoors.

On the East Coast, you'll find vibrant cities like New York and Boston, where you can enjoy hot summers and but where winter temperatures can fall quite rapidly. Florida is a haven for sun-seekers, with long sunny days and balmy nights that make it the perfect destination for beach lovers and theme park lovers. And let's not forget about Alaska, where the summers are mild and the stunning scenery will take your breath away! From snow-capped peaks to sprawling beaches, the USA's weather is as diverse as its landscapes, offering something for everyone.

DO IT YOURWAY

With all this waiting for you, there’s one thing we want to know: how are you going to cruise to the US? We don’t want to brag about our Smart Packages, but we might have to. For one, they’re some of the best value cruise holidays going, letting you see more of where you’re going – without having to fork out for the chance.

As for the rest of the reasons, how does this sound: flights and hotels at a time and place that suits you, added extras like free cabin upgrades and onboard spending money, and a simple booking process that finds the best prices to match your budget? What’s not to like?

Whether it’s North or South, West or East Coast, US cruises from Cruise Nation make every destination one to remember.

Fancy staying a little longer in the USA? Cruise and Stay Holidays courtesy of Cruise Nation let you do just that. Ahead of your voyage or after your cruise, live like a local for a few extra days in prime locations hand-picked and pre-approved by us!

USA Highlights

The City That Never Sleeps. The Big Apple. The Capital of the World. Whatever you want to call New York, it’s made a name for itself as a truly unmissable USA location. An architectural icon. A food scene to dine for. Museums, galleries and landmarks that outdo entire countries. You name it, New York has it.

Packed with iconic locations and sights, a New York cruise is a highlight reel of America old and new. From untouchable icons like the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building to the Met, Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park, NYC’s focal points are like a who’s who of any tourist’s to-do list.

With endless entertainment in the form of hit Broadway shows, world-famous live music, stand-up comedy and nightclubs that keep the party going ‘til dawn, no matter what kind of night you’re looking for, New York has something to suit every taste. And with our Smart Packages and Cruise and Stay deals, including accommodation, why not spend a few extra days as an honorary New Yorker after your cruise is over? Go on, this one’s on us.

As the birthplace of Starbucks, Seattle might well be the Coffee Capital of the world, but there’s far more to the city than just a great cup of joe. With incredible architecture, art and a buzzing nightlife scene, Seattle is the ideal way to take in the best of the Pacific Northwest on a US cruise.

Make way for the city’s most famous attraction, Pike Place Market. Up and running since the early 1900s, it’s one of the best places to find fresh local produce and pick up unique homemade goods to bring home with you. How about that other Seattle icon, the Space Needle? It offers incredible views of the city and, for those feeling peckish, getting your grub on in its revolving restaurant is a dining experience like no other in town.

The city is also home to an unusual and varied collection of museums, including the Museum of Pop Culture and the popular Museum of Flight, two ace places where you can get to know Seattle’s storied cultural clout for yourself.

Los Angeles

The Home of Hollywood, the City of Angels is like something straight out of a movie. Star-studded and endlessly sunny, LA is blessed with good vibes, golden beaches and arty creativity around every corner.

The centre of the world’s film and TV industry, why not follow in the footsteps (or the handprints) of some of the world’s most famous stars on The Walk of Fame? Or peek around the curtain of the silver screen with a behind-the-scenes tour of Universal and Paramount Pictures, before you cap it all off by tracking down the homes of the film world’s most beloved celebs.

Away from its Hollywood streets, LA has plenty of other treats in store. For starters, it has quite the culinary scene – and you will find California’s best tacos here. For those who want to shop ‘till they drop, Rodeo Drive’s luxury designer stores may tempt you to spend a few thousand dollars on the latest fashions. Not quite your budget? No worries. The Santa Monica Street Market offers handmade, artisan crafts and locally produced goods to scratch that shopping itch.

And once you’ve taken in LA’s big sights, make like the locals and hit the nearest beach for a dose of surfing, skating or, saving the best ’til last, simply relaxing in the Californian sunshine.

San Francisco

As laid-back as it gets, San Francisco’s place in 60s, 70s and 90s culture creates a relaxed, come-as-you-are way of life that’s irresistible to tourists and locals alike. From the Summer of Love to the dot com boom, doing things differently has always been SF’s mantra, and the same applies to your hol out here too.

Home of the world-famous Golden Gate Bridge, it’s easy to see why people have been flocking to explore its fog-covered hills and eclectic landmarks for decades. The city's iconic, steep streets – and its equally famous cable cars – are packed with historic buildings and unusual architecture, making it one of America's most-loved destinations for history and art buffs alike.

And just visible from the shore, Alcatraz Island remains a popular draw for tourists. Home to the abandoned, eerie prison, visitors can arrange a guided tour or hop on a ferry to see the famous landmark for themselves. Not satisfied your San Fran sightseeing bug? How about the Golden Gate Bridge? Or the Museum of Modern Art? Or Haight Street’s hippie birthplace? For the free spirits, there’s plenty of peace and love to go around here.

New Orleans

New Orleans knows how to celebrate – even if there’s no reason to. Just being here is enough to keep everyone’s spirits alive and well. Famed for its warm welcome, fusion of cultures and, of course, Mardi Gras, New Orleans feels like an all-day party every day.

And thanks to our holidays to New Orleans, you can experience every part of what makes the city quite simply one of the best places on Earth. History is at every turn here, as are galleries, museums and bars buzzing with live jazz. We hope you made room for food too, because New Orleans boasts some of the best cuisine in the US.

It’s great for taking a wander in too. For some free-of-charge thrills, head to the heart of its French Quarter, Jackson Square and be wowed by endless street performers; check out local musicians and buskers over at Armstrong Park; or make way for Crescent Park, where incredible views of the Mississippi River are ready and waiting for postcard-worthy pics.

Oh, and don’t forget the city’s mantra: “be nice or leave”. Good thing New Orleans has everything you need to put you in the best mood ever.

Las Vegas makes no apologies for its decadence. And that’s what we love about the place. It may seem glitzy and tacky to some, but if that’s your kind of thing, you’ll find plenty about Sin City that’s down your street. And a Las Vegas cruise with us lets you see it all.

Of course, there’s The Strip, the city’s 4.2-mile road that’s all bright lights and incredible sights. No trip here would be complete without heading to Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas’ crown jewel casino packed with high-rollers and show stealers. We mean it, here’s your chance to catch everyone from Celine Dion and the Cirque Du Soleil to the Blue Man Group and Penn & Teller. Afterwards, head to the Bellagio, where the world-famous Fountains of Bellagio’s dancing jets of water sway and spray to iconic hits from past and present.

There’s plenty of laid-back attractions here too. The Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens are always a treat, while the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area serves as a reminder that there’s more to Las Vegas than lost wages and risky bets. Whatever you’re here for, with Cruise Nation’s Smart Packages, Las Vegas makes for an incredible place to spend a few days either side of your voyage.

An adrenaline junkie’s dream, our Orlando cruises let you experience the thrills and spills of one of the Sunshine State’s brightest spots. Home to over a dozen theme parks, hold on tight, because the fun comes thick and fast. Whether you’re at Walt Disney World or Universal Studios, high-speed nostalgia is in spades here, delighting tourists of all ages (and heights).

But away from the theme parks, there are lots of different ways Orlando can excite you too. Slow down the speed, and you’ll find gardens and nature preserves to stroll in, farmers’ markets and other foodie treats to get your stomach rumbling with, and Mouse-free museums courtesy of Winter Park and the Charles Hosmer Museum of American Art. And best of all, you don’t need to be this tall to do any of it.

Looking for non-stop action? You’ll find it in Miami! The place might be a port for the Caribbean and the Bahamas, but it has plenty going for it in its own right – even if you took away the beaches.

We won’t lie, things are big and boisterous here, but if fun’s your thing, you’ll fit in just right. South Beach, in particular, is Miami in miniature, all art deco architecture, white sand beaches, and bars abuzz with revellers and regulars. Or head on down to Little Havana for a spot of colour, culture and Cuban shirts – not to mention the best mojitos this side of the border.

For the cool crowd, give Wynwood a go. Whether it’s a spot of gallery hopping or a trip to the Design District, a high-end shopper’s paradise with some small art spots thrown in for good measure, it makes for a great alternative to South Beach, but it’s no less lively!

Capped off with fusion cuisines, sweeping views over Biscayne Bay and poolside terraces a- plenty, there’s no shortage of fun to find in this small slice of paradise.

Where do you wanna’ go? Get the travel inspo on the go with this handy US cruise port map.

USA CRUISES FAQS

When it comes to East Coast weather, the region follows fairly typical seasons, so you’ll know what to pack at least. The country as a whole tends to cool down in autumn, but over on the east is where things really flourish. Expect incredible foliage and shades of yellow, orange and red as falling leaves change their colour. For many, this is the time to visit.

As winter breaks, the cold snap can hit hard. In places like New York, Boston and New England, the temperature really takes a tumble, so bring a thick coat, scarves and gloves. Walking boots are a good idea, especially since snow is likely here too.

When spring comes around, the weather is much more pleasant, which makes for some ideal sightseeing. The summers are sunny all season round, even in Northern and Eastern cities, though the evenings are cool, especially when you’re out on deck.

As for West Coast weather, it’s a similar story. Generally, the best time to visit is between September and November. It’s not as busy as peak periods, the temperatures are still pleasant, and a lot of the fog that can linger in the summer tends to disappear.

Unsurprisingly, temperatures are at their highest in the summer, with highs of 30°C. The days are also at their longest in July, so if you’re looking to cast its sights in the best light, then this could be the best time for you.

Temperatures in the winter stay on the mild side, though it can get very cool at night, so be sure to bring some layers with you. The coast is also at its wettest between December and February, so if you’re looking to get away from the rain, you’re better off waiting for spring if you ask us.

Great Basin National Park to Undergo Major Construction This Summer — What Visitors Need to Know

Visitors can expect disruptions due to construction from June to September

A national park known for hiking, cave exploration and fishing will be undergoing several upgrades this summer, and park officials are urging visitors to plan accordingly.

Great Basin National Park, located in White Pine County, Nevada, will be managing five major construction projects throughout the summer months, the National Park Service (NPS) recently announced . “I am excited to see such a significant investment in the park’s vital infrastructure, but I recognize that many visitors will be affected by the work going on this summer. I ask everyone to have patience and understanding as we strive today to improve the visitor experience at Great Basin for generations to come,” Great Basin National Park Superintendent Ashley Adams said te

Updated timing for the projects can be found on the park's ‘Alerts In Effect / Current Projects’ page. Specifically, the park's amphitheater, Visitor Center parking, and picnic area will be closed towards the end of summer, and the evening astronomy programs will also be relocated.

At the conclusion of the five construction projects, visitors will enjoy expanded campgrounds, new trailheads, road improvements, and facilities.  The park is also home to Lehman Caves, which are the longest stretch of cave systems in Nevada. Visitors can tour the caves by booking tickets on Recreation.gov , and rates start at $15 for Adults. The caves have a average temperature of 50° F which can provide a refreshing reprieve from the summer heat. Cave visits are also affected by the summer construction upgrades, so travelers will need to plan ahead and book tickets early to secure a cave visit.  Over 143,200 people visited Great Basin National Park in 2023.

This tiny island nation has more AI startups per capita than the United States

  • It's using AI to automate tasks, improve education, and solve traffic issues.
  • Malta aims to be an AI hub by 2030, with 56 startups already active in the small nation.

Insider Today

Silicon Valley isn't the only hotspot in the AI boom.

Malta, a small island in the Mediterranean Sea, is leaning heavily into the technology. Its businesses, universities, and the government are embracing AI as a way to automate tasks, improve education, and even solve rush hour traffic jams.

The country has a population of just over 500,000, but it already has 56 AI startups, according to startup tracker Tracxn Technologies. That's about 1 startup for every 9,500 people. Meanwhile, the United States, which has a population of over 330 million, has around 24,000 AI startups by Tracxn's count. Or 1 for about every 14,000 residents.

Related stories

The country has long made headlines as a hot spot for wealthy tourists . Its "golden passport," which gives rich foreigners citizenship in exchange for investing a certain amount of money in the country, was the second most sought-after foreign passport program for Americans last year.

It also began pouring money into artificial intelligence before the ChatGPT-fueled AI arms race began.

In 2019, Malta outlined a vision to be the "Ultimate AI Launchpad" by 2030. The goal was for Malta to become "a place in which local and foreign companies and entrepreneurs can develop, prototype, test, and scale AI, and ultimately showcase the value of their innovations across an entire nation primed for adoption." AI would "springboard from Malta to the world."

Those efforts stalled between the pandemic and a turn of the political administration. Now, under the EU's AI Act — the region's sweeping AI legislation, which bans unacceptable use cases — Malta is working on a new AI strategy, Bloomberg reported .

Those at the center of this renewed effort are focused on safely deploying the technology. They're developing initiatives to combat job displacement and ethical frameworks, for instance.

"Foresight in recognizing the importance of AI has given Malta a head start in the field of AI, and it continues to be a leader in the industry today," Alexiei Dingli, a professor of artificial intelligence at the University of Malta, who's leading Malta's endeavors, including the traffic jam project, told Bloomberg.

Axel Springer, Business Insider's parent company, has a global deal to allow OpenAI to train its models on its media brands' reporting.

Trump Has Been Convicted. Here’s What Happens Next.

Donald J. Trump has promised to appeal, but he may face limits on his ability to travel and to vote as he campaigns for the White House.

Donald J. Trump in a dark suit, red tie and white shirt.

By Jesse McKinley and Maggie Astor

  • May 30, 2024

The conviction of former President Donald J. Trump on Thursday is just the latest step in his legal odyssey in New York’s court system. The judge, Juan M. Merchan, set Mr. Trump’s sentencing for July 11, at which point he could be sentenced to as much as four years behind bars, or to probation.

It won’t stop him from running for president, though: There is no legal prohibition on felons doing that . No constitutional provision would stop him even from serving as president from a prison cell, though in practice that would trigger a crisis that courts would almost certainly have to resolve.

His ability to vote — for himself, presumably — depends on whether he is sentenced to prison. Florida, where he is registered, requires felons convicted there to complete their full sentence, including parole or probation, before regaining voting rights. But when Floridians are convicted in another state, Florida defers to the laws of that state, and New York disenfranchises felons only while they are in prison.

Former President Donald J. Trump faced 34 felony charges of falsifying business records, related to the reimbursement of hush money paid to the porn star Stormy Daniels in order to cover up a sex scandal around the 2016 presidential election.

“Because Florida recognizes voting rights restoration in the state of conviction, and because New York’s law states that those with a felony conviction do not lose their right to vote unless they are incarcerated during the election, then Trump will not lose his right to vote in this case unless he is in prison on Election Day,” said Blair Bowie, a lawyer at the Campaign Legal Center, a nonprofit watchdog group.

Mr. Trump will almost certainly appeal his conviction, after months of criticizing the case and attacking the Manhattan district attorney, who brought it, and Justice Merchan, who presided over his trial.

Long before that appeal is heard, however, Mr. Trump will be enmeshed in the gears of the criminal justice system.

A pre-sentencing report makes recommendations based on the defendant’s criminal record — Mr. Trump had none before this case — as well as his personal history and the crime itself. The former president was found guilty of falsifying business records in relation to a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels, a porn star who says she had a brief sexual tryst with Mr. Trump in 2006, in order to buy her silence.

At the pre-sentence interview, a psychologist or social worker working for the probation department may also talk to Mr. Trump, during which time the defendant can “try to make a good impression and explain why he or she deserves a lighter punishment,” according to the New York State Unified Court System.

The pre-sentencing report can also include submissions from the defense, and may describe whether “the defendant is in a counseling program or has a steady job.”

In Mr. Trump’s case, of course, he is applying — as it were — for a steady job as president of the United States, a campaign that may be complicated by his new status as a felon. Mr. Trump will likely be required to regularly report to a probation officer, and rules on travel could be imposed.

Mr. Trump was convicted of 34 Class E felonies, New York’s lowest level , each of which carry a potential penalty of up to four years in prison. Probation or home confinement are other possibilities that Justice Merchan can consider.

That said, Justice Merchan has indicated in the past that he takes white-collar crime seriously . If he did impose prison time, he would likely impose the punishment concurrently, meaning that Mr. Trump would serve time on each of the counts he was convicted of simultaneously.

If Mr. Trump were instead sentenced to probation, he could still be jailed if he were later found to have committed additional crimes. Mr. Trump, 77, currently faces three other criminal cases: two federal, dealing with his handling of classified documents and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election , and a state case in Georgia that concerns election interference.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers can file a notice of appeal after sentencing, scheduled for July 11 at 10 a.m. And the judge could stay any punishment during an appeal, something that could delay punishment beyond Election Day.

The proceedings will continue even if he wins: Because it’s a state case, not federal, Mr. Trump would have no power as president to pardon himself .

Our Coverage of the Trump Hush-Money Trial

Guilty Verdict : Donald Trump was convicted on all 34 counts  of falsifying records to cover up a sex scandal that threatened his bid for the White House in 2016, making him the first American president to be declared a felon .

Next Steps: The judge in the case set Trump’s sentencing for July 11, and Trump already indicated that he plans to appeal. Here’s what else may happen .

Reactions: Trump’s conviction reverberated quickly across the country and over the world . Here’s what Trump , voters , New Yorkers , Republicans  and the White House  had to say.

The Presidential Race : The verdict will test America’s traditions, legal institutions and ability to hold an election under historic partisan tension , reshuffling a race that has been locked in stasis and defined by a polarizing former president.

Making the Case: Over six weeks and the testimony of 20 witnesses, the Manhattan district attorney’s office wove a sprawling story  of election interference and falsified business records.

Legal Luck Runs Out: The four criminal cases that threatened Trump’s freedom had been stumbling along, pleasing his advisers. Then his good fortune expired .

Connecting the Dots: As rumors circulated of Trump’s reported infidelity, two accounts of women  being paid to stay silent about their encounters became central to his indictment.

Can convicted felons like Trump vote? What comes next after guilty verdict

Donald Trump's historic felony conviction on Thursday raises a big and very personal question for the former president as he runs for his old White House job: Can Trump vote for himself this November?

The answer depends on whether the presumptive 2024 Republican presidential nominee will spend time in prison. And that's a big unknown at this point.

Legal experts have suggested Trump's sentence — which he will almost certainly appeal — could fall somewhere between probation and four years in prison . He'll learn his official fate on July 11, just four days before the start of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

While the U.S. Constitution  doesn’t explicitly bar felons  from serving as president, a number of states do restrict felons’ voting rights. In Florida, where  Trump lives , a felon’s right to vote is determined by the rules in the state where they received the conviction.

And that could be good news for Trump.

New York only removes a felon’s right to vote during the time that they are in prison. Felons who are living in the community remain eligible to participate in elections.

That means Trump would need to be incarcerated at the time of the November election to lose his right to vote over the hush money conviction . And a prison sentence for the ex-president could look different than it would for a normal person, considering the around-the-clock Secret Service protection he receives.

Trump is also almost certain to appeal a conviction, a process that could keep him out of jail for months as he awaits a final judgment. That leaves only a small chance that he’ll lose his vote for the 2024 election.

Trump still faces additional charges in the Mar-a-lago  classified documents case , the federal  election interference  case in the District of Columbia and the Georgia  election interference  case. None of those are currently scheduled to go to trial, and it's unclear if any of them will happen by Election Day.
