Tips for Using a Travel Watercolor Set

Inspiration can hit at any moment, so it is clever to always have a travel paint set with you. Some artists feel more comfortable assembling their own set with everything they need, but today many affordable and useful travel watercolor sets contain all you need. However, as some artists have learned through experience, there are always those little tips and tricks that can help out even further. Below are a few of these tips:

• Keep it simple , if you are in doubt about if you are going to use anything, leave it out. Otherwise, you might be including everything but the kitchen sink, which defeats the entire point of traveling light.
• Some sets come with water containers , but if not, consider a silicone cupcake liner or collapsible cup.
• If you have some watercolor color tubes, why not create your own travel set using an empty metal palette tin. This way you can make a travel watercolor palette that suits your needs with chosen colors and better-quality paints.
• Most times, you will have to include a small travel brush set that usually comes in a handy carry case or use brushes you already have and carry them in a zipper pencil case with you.

• Consider a set of watercolor brush pens that already contain water and pigment.
• Tape the brushes together end to end when traveling with loose This helps protect the bristles.
• A sketchbook should also be compact , so an ideal size would be A5 or close to this. So, 5 x 8 inches or 9 x 12 inches, maybe even 14 x 11 inches are good choices and should fit into a carry bag.
• Consider a sketchbook with spirals as you do not have to tear pages out.
• If you want to use a watercolor backboard, consider corflute as it is lightweight and durable. Corflute is a corrugated plastic that you can usually buy in various size sheets.
• If you are carrying other liquids or gels, store them in zip-lock bags.
• Always plan for the weather when painting outdoors, it is best to be prepared.

How to Make Your Own Travel Watercolor Palette

Tube paints have more vibrant paint colors than the pan paints that come with the travel paint sets. You also might not get all the colors you want in a set, so by making your own travel watercolor palette, you can customize the paint colors. Since carrying tubes of paint can be risky, as they may burst open or become messy, drying the tube paint in the pans is a better travel option. Also, it is easier to get paint from the pans than it is to squeeze it out of a tube. Some colors to include in your palette can include the following.

These are only suggestions, and you can customize your palette to whatever colors you want to work with.

• Warm red, yellow, and blue
• Cool red, yellow, and blue
• Burnt sienna
• Burnt umber
• Neutral gray or another darker neutral tint

So, you have chosen your colors, and have your favorite palette ready. This could be plastic or metal. Write what pigment brand, name, number on each pan. Choose a tube of paint and open it carefully if it has not been used in a while. Squeeze slowly into the pan, making sure not to fill it completely, only about halfway. You can then use a toothpick to stir the paint and move it to fill the corners of the pan. Pick up and tap the pan on the table to help get rid of any bubbles.

Follow the same process for all the colors you are going to use. You must then leave the paint to dry naturally for about 24 hours, or it might also take a few days. If you want, you can fill a second time, just make sure it is not to the top of the pan. You need some space for the water, which activates the paint. If the paint seems to crack or shrink significantly, adding a drop or two of glycerin to the paint before placing it into the pan can help. You can place the colors in whatever order you like or is convenient for you.

Do not be limited by where you paint, there are so many options available for travel watercolor sets that you should be able to find something that works for you. So, go out, travel, and explore, nothing should prevent you from creating beautiful art pieces on the go.

Are watercolors allowed on the plane when traveling.

The dry watercolor sets are compact and easy to transport and are allowed on the plane. The liquid watercolors, on the other hand, are also easy to transport and are not flammable. However, they must be taken with you and checked in or placed with your carry-on.

Both tube and pan watercolors can last for a long time, the tube of paints for about five years, while the pan watercolors can go for longer at around ten years. However, you will most probably use them before that. The time can vary due to how you store and look after your watercolors.

Watercolor pans come in various sizes and are perfect for a portable watercolor set. Full pans can be seen as a full tube of paint, while half pans contain half the amount. For an even more compact travel watercolor palette, you can also get quarter and eighth pans.

What Is the Best Way to Transport Watercolor Brushes?

Many of the watercolor sets come with a paintbrush that is kept inside with the paint set. You can also purchase a paintbrush set that comes in its own pouch for protection. However, if you are taking loose brushes, you can simply tape them together end to end to help protect the brushes.

9+ Best Travel Art Supplies for Painting Artists Who Travel

One of the perks of painting is that all of the necessary materials are fairly portable. This article will guide you through which travel art supplies are the easiest to pack and take with you.

We are lucky in this day and age to be able to carry our paints in small paint tubes and have easels that are light and foldable. However, there are a LOT of different materials out there and it can be hard to know what exactly you need to paint and travel. I will break down exactly what you will need, so that you can easily be a traveling artist, painting on the go!

Painting Surfaces Best for Travel

This is one of the more important of the travel art supplies you’ll need to remember to take with you. As wherever you paint you will always need something to paint on.

I recommend using loose gessoed canvas that can be rolled up. Boards will take up more space than stretched canvas. Not to mention you have to be a little more careful not to puncture or damage stretch canvases!

You can gesso your own canvas or purchase it already primed and ready to paint on! When you are ready to start your painting, you will simply cut out a size that is appropriate for your project. Then attach the piece of canvas to a hard board with some masking tape. This hard board will act as a support for all of your paintings on your journey. You will be able to use both sides if you wish to do multiple paintings at a time! I do this often 😉

Art Supplies for Storing Paintings and Canvas

To transport your canvas I recommend to roll it up and store it safely inside a mailing tube. This provides excellent protection for your painting surface and keeps it from getting any creases.

In addition, I recommend for you to use the mailing tube to store your completed paintings on your travels ( once they are dry ). Again this is a wonderful way to protect your work from getting any folds or creases. When traveling we often accidentally drop things or stack things on top of one another. Therefore storing your work in a mailing tube alleviates a lot of worry about any damage that may incur to your work!

✨ A quick tip about rolling up paintings – keep the painted side on the outside! I know this sounds odd but it is the best way to take care of your paintings while rolling them up. Rolling oil paintings inwards can cause them to chip or flake which will become visible when laid out flat again.

Travel Art Carrying Case

What if your paintings are still wet and you need to continue your travels? Enter the wet panel art carrying case ! You can purchase one or make your own. They allow you to store wet painting safely inside a box in such a way so that it won’t touch anything else. I personally keep my painting taped down to a board to allow for me to place my painting safely inside a carrier if I need to do so.

Art Supplies to Speed up Drying Time

If you are using oil paints and would rather not have to deal with wet paintings while traveling. There are specific travel art supplies that can help speed up the drying time.

Liquin for traveling artists

Liquin will help a great deal to speed up the drying time! Using just a little will go a long way. Add it to your paint at times when you would normally use linseed oil to thin out your paint.

Whenever I use Liquin in a painting, I take out a small amount of it from the jar using a palette knife and place a little pile of it onto my palette. This way it is easy for me to add it as needed while I mix my oil paints .

Lightweight Travel Easels

An easel can be a little bit of a headache for artists who are traveling, as it is most likely the largest item out of all your travel art supplies. However, there are some great travel easel options out there for every budget!

Pochade boxes for travelers

A pochade box is one of the most popular easels for plein air painters and traveling artists. They are also quite historical as they came into popularity in the 19th century when artists started to paint out of doors. Pochade boxes tend to be small and are highly portable as you can store not just your materials inside them but also your painting. You can purchase one or make your own out of a cigar box!

French easel travel supplies

I personally use a French easel when I travel as well as in my studio. So, it is nice to be able to use the same easel that I always use when on the go. Similar to the pochade box, it allows you to store a lot of supplies inside the easel including your palette. It can be folded up smaller which makes it easy to carry and transport.

However, the downside to a French easel however is that it can be a bit heavier than other options, due to its wood construction. So, if you are looking for something particularly lightweight, this might not be the best option for you.

Tripod easel with palette box

The tripod easel and palette box can sometimes be a good alternative to the traditional French easel. The versions made out of aluminum can be lighter weight and less prone to breakage. In addition, this variety gives you a good distance between the painting and the palette – something missing with a pochade box.

A good camera tripod easel with a palette box can be a little pricey. However, if you are planning to do a lot of plein air painting or walking with your painting supplies. It is really worth it to get a lightweight easel, as your back will thank you! 🙂

Brushes and Brush Cleaner

For traveling I recommend the Guerilla ‘mighty mite brush washer’ . It is leak proof, you don’t have to worry about soiling things when traveling with with linseed oil or turpenoid. In addition, it works as a terrific brush cleaner that lasts a long time.

Palette cups

You could also use oil painting palette cups. These are small metal cups that you can clip onto your palette. They are not meant to be a brush cleaners however. So you can’t clean your brush in this as thoroughly as you could in a regular brush cleaner. However, these make for super useful travel art supplies. As they work great as receptacles to keep your linseed oil and or turpenoid in – when you need to use those in your painting.

Paints for Travel

Most paint tubes come in a large or small size – typically 37 ml or 150 ml size tubes. So, when traveling with your painting supplies it is best to use small sized tubes. As this will help a great deal with keeping the weight down.

If small sized paint tubes are still too heavy and you don’t need to take that much paint with you… Then you could purchase small containers to store your paint in. Just keep in mind, that the paint will dry quicker in such containers than if it remained in a tube!

So, if you are planning to travel and paint for just a few days then small containers work nicely. However, not if you will be on the go with your travel art supplies for a couple of weeks or longer. As the paint will likely dry out over that period time.

I am not traveling very far but when I do travel I have a few art supplies! And I have taken a couple of trips to Yosemite National Park, and Big Sur, and even Lake Tahoe it was beautiful with so much to paint! I have a few travel watercolor sets! And I have gotten good at scouting out a spot with natural beauty as well as shade!

Hi Elizabeth! I have been Plein Aire painting for years. Since I paint locally one of the best aids is my garden wagon. It collapses and stays in the car trunk ready to load up and head into nature filled up with all the painting supplies mentioned. It is better than using a backpack!

I have tried to arrange these tips in the order you will need them so let's dive in with getting ready to go out for the day's painting.

a) Adapting to Outdoor Conditions

When painting outdoors, the weather can be as much a part of your canvas as the landscape itself. Being weather wise is crucial for a traveling artist. Always check the weather forecast before heading out to paint. This foresight can help you prepare for changing conditions, whether it's bringing along sunscreen and a hat for sunny days or a waterproof jacket for those unexpected rain showers.

Adapt your painting technique to the conditions. On windy days, you might opt for heavier sketchbooks or easels, or choose fast-drying mediums to prevent your work from being affected by sudden gusts or moisture. Sometimes items are sacred, etc. and locals may not allow or want you to paint them. If in doubt ask. This respect can often open more doors and create a deeper connection with the place and its people.

Networking with fellow traveling artists can be both inspiring and practical. Sharing experiences, tips, or even just stories over a cup of coffee can lead to friendships and valuable artistic exchanges.

Don't hesitate to experiment with local artistic materials and techniques. It's a fantastic way to integrate a piece of your travels into your art, making each piece a unique memento of your journey.

Lastly, if you're traveling with family or friends, remember to strike a balance between your passion for painting and enjoying the trip together. 4) Setting Yourself Up for Future Paintings

Traveling as an artist is more than just capturing moments; it's about sowing seeds for future artistic growth. Each sketch, photograph, and memory becomes a valuable resource for more complex and inspired artworks once you're back in your studio.

Those in-between moments, like waiting at airports or train stations, are golden opportunities. Instead of scrolling through your phone, pull out your sketchbook. These moments can be surprisingly productive, offering a chance to capture fleeting scenes and expressions that might later become the centerpiece of a larger work.

Photography is another powerful tool in your artistic arsenal. It complements your sketches, providing details and perspectives that you might have missed or didn't have time to capture. Writing allows you to make a note of all your senses beyond just what you can see, you can also describe the smells, sounds, and tactile aspects of the experience.

When you’re home, these memories will help you to conjure up the feelings of the trip, giving your paintings more depth and emotion. If you distinctly remember the feeling of the sun on your skin or the damp of the rolling mist, you can try to weave these sensory experiences into your paintings. In doing so, you will lend your works more atmosphere beyond simply recreating what you saw.

Remember that the essence of travel painting extends far beyond the canvas. It's about the sights you witness, the people you meet, the experiences you embrace, and the memories you create. Each stroke of your brush captures not just a scene but a moment in time, a fragment of the world as seen through your eyes.

Wi-Fi problems? Add a wired network to your home without Ethernet cable - here's how

Wireless internet connections are convenient, but they're also notoriously unreliable. Nothing proves that point more emphatically than a glitchy video conference call, especially if it's tied to a crucial business meeting.

The solution, of course, is to run a wired network connection to your home office. Wi-Fi is great for mobility, but a wired connection offers a lot of advantages when it comes to working from home. It's faster and more reliable, with lower latency, all of which matters if you regularly share large files or participate in high-quality video meetings, or even (ahem) play games.

But setting up a full-time wired connection is easier said than done. Even if you own your own home, running 50 or 100 feet of Ethernet cable is a messy, expensive job. And if you're living and working in a rented house or apartment, forget about punching holes in walls and ceilings.

Fortunately, there's a solution, as I discovered some years ago when I moved to a loft-style condo. The cable modem was in the living room, serving up gigabit downloads. My office was at the other end of the house, with Wi-Fi signals that were depressingly weak, thanks to brick walls. I didn't have Ethernet jacks anywhere in my home, but there were cable outlets in every room. And that unlocked the solution to my bandwidth dilemma.

Those cable outlets were installed -- originally -- to make it convenient to hook up television sets in every room. As it turns out, the coaxial cable that connects those outlets is also capable of carrying Internet signals, thanks to a technology called MoCA ( Multimedia over Coax Alliance ). The latest revision of this technology, MoCA 2.5, supports speeds up to 2.5 Gbps.

You can't plug an Ethernet cable directly into a cable outlet, of course. To make use of that existing coaxial cable requires a MoCA adapter on each end of the connection. That adapter is a simple box that has two connectors on the back -- one for a coaxial cable, the other for an RJ45 Ethernet plug.

Using this MoCA adapter, you can create a wired high-speed internet connection.

I was in luck because my Xfinity cable modem supports MoCA technology directly. As a result, I needed only an adapter for my office PC. I chose the  Trendnet TMO-312C Ethernet Over Coax MoCA 2.5 Adapter , pictured above. After connecting the adapter to the cable outlet in my home office using a very short run of coaxial cable, I connected it to the Gigabit Ethernet port on my home office PC, using a standard Cat 6 cable.

If your cable modem doesn't support MoCA directly, you'll need a cable splitter and a second MoCA adapter to connect to an Ethernet port on the cable modem/gateway. If you have multiple cable outlets in your home or office, you can add a MoCA adapter at each one, and you can plug any Ethernet-compatible device into that adapter -- PC, Mac, or smart TV, for example.

You can even use this technology in combination with a Wi-Fi network to add a Wi-Fi access point in a basement, attic, or other location that's too far from the primary access point to get a reliable signal.

MoCA technology is a great alternative to standard Ethernet wiring, and it costs a tiny fraction of what you'd have to pay to retrofit dedicated Ethernet cabling in your home. It's a worthwhile option to consider when Wi-Fi simply can't get from Point A to Point B.

Ideal for a busy travel day, Kizik's Milan sneaker can be slipped on and off easily, no hands needed. “I’ve worn them to work, all across New York City and New Jersey , and recently took them to Maine. I haven’t complained once about my feet thanks to the ultra-cushioned foam insoles,” says commerce writer Paris Wilson . This nylon retro-inspired shoe comes in a variety of colorways, and you can even grab them in a leather version , too.

Allbirds reign supreme in the comfort department. The Tree Runners are particularly lightweight and perfect for travel. “Not only are these sneakers light and stretchy enough to easily slip on and off while zipping through airport security, but they’re also just as easy on my feet as my favorite pair of Uggs (yet much more functional and fashionable)," says contributor Lauren Dana Ellman . These versatile workhorses are available in a slew of neutral hues, matching everything in your capsule wardrobe . “The shoes are also true to size, and, even better, you won’t even need to break them in ahead of time: Just slip them on, tie up the laces, and get going. These New Balance 574s have been one of my most-worn shoes for the past few years. They're a perfect balance of sporty and stylish, and are neutral enough to match nearly anything in my carry-on . Looks aside, they've never let me down comfort-wise; from long commutes to the office to city walking tours around Boston , they've kept my feet comfortable every time. What stands out most to me is how lightweight they are—despite giving off the cool dad shoe vibe, they aren't clunky or heavy at all. They've also stayed in excellent condition over the years, which is more than I can say about most of my white sneakers.

Associate editor Charlie Hobbs waxed poetic last year about his long-standing love for New Balance dad shoes . His claim: They are the ultimate travel shoe. Among his favorites are the popular 9060 sneaker. “They are the only sneakers I pack," says Hobbs. “My conservatism is rewarded. I am obsessed with these sneakers. They are so comfortable, the Platonic ideal of the walking shoe.” They shine for both style and comfort, and work well year-round. “The shoes don't merely survive such 30,000 step days—they improve, becoming softer, easier to wear, and never staining with the dust of the Tiergarten,” says Hobbs.

Earlier this year, Lululemon introduced its first casual sneaker—and Traveler contributor Rachel Chang was impressed to say the least. She put them to the test, wearing them all around the city and even during some runs for her Boston Marathon training—despite them not being billed as a running shoe. The verdict: They really held up: “From its 3D molded support and cushioning to its high-abrasion rubber traction, this no-fuss, everyday shoe is all about keeping you comfortable on the move,” says Chang. Even better, they look polished and stylish with any outfit. “I’ve paired the sneakers with running clothes, business casual dresses, jeans, and dress slacks. It's worked well with all of them—after all, nothing is as versatile as a white sneaker .”

When Hobbs isn't sporting in his New Balance dad shoes, he's probably wearing his go-to pair of Karhu sneakers. The Fusion 2.0 sneakers have a sporty, retro flare and are available in several fun color combinations. The shoe is an ode to the brand's best-selling running shoe of 1996, offering all the support and cushion the original was known for.

Ellman wore these canvas slip-ons all around Italy last summer. “I loved how they cushioned my feet without weighing them down thanks to their pillowy-soft albeit breathable foam outsoles,” she says. “I'm not being dramatic when I say they felt like I was walking on clouds. Even after trekking 17,000-plus steps per day around Rome and Florence , they've yet to unlace.” They're simple yet stylish, and feature removable and washable insoles.

As far as casual sneakers go, Nike Air Force 1s are about as classic as it gets. Chances are, you've had a pair of these in your closet at some point—and for good reason. They're the simple, sporty white sneaker you can pull out any day of the week without much thought needed. Versatile and timeless, I've packed this pair of wear-with-everything sneakers on countless trips over the years, from Miami to Milan .

Once reserved for soccer, the trending Adidas Samba is back and better than ever. These low-top sporty shoes complete any street style look, all while providing plenty of comfort. Editorial assistant Kat Chen swears by these practically weightless favorites: “They are my ride or die. I got this newest pair last summer, but the ones I had before I wore for literally a decade until they finally wore down.

These vegan leather sneakers from Banana Republic will help elevate any travel outfit, from slacks and jeans to dresses and skirts. They feature a rubber outsole for reduced shock and better traction, giving you all the flexibility you need on the go.

There's no shoe quite as versatile as an all-white sneaker . This sleek pair is a new favorite of senior commerce editor Madison Flager for both travel and commutes to work. The 100 percent vegan kicks are easy to slip on and off, and feature a compression molded cushioned midsole for added comfort and a slip-resistance outsole. “These sneakers were comfortable right out of the box, and wrap around your foot in a way that doesn't leave any sock indentations or irritation, even after hours walking around NYC,” says Flager.

We love Vejas for its slightly elevated take on the everyday casual sneaker. The Campo is minimal in design, but manages to look polished with every outf it, from jeans to dresses. Global digital director Arati Menon tells us that the Campo sneaker requires much less break-in time than other Veja styles. “I’ve taken my Campos on rugged national park adventures and European city breaks, and use them as workwear staples,” says Menon. If you need something sleek in your suitcase that will match anything you throw on, pack these.

Hannah Towey , associate editor of transportation and travel news, recently packed these bright-blue Gola sneakers on a trip to Paris for the Olympics —and they didn't let her down. “These are my favorite sneakers for when I’m walking a ton but still want to look cute (Paris is simply not the city for athleisure and running sneakers, even during sports events). They are well-priced and a fun alternative to the Adidas Sambas that are everywhere now.”

Adidas Stan Smiths might just become your most-worn sneaker—if they aren't already. These classics are so sleek, easy to slide on and off, and versatile enough to be the only sneaker you pack to your next destination. Associate editor Matt Ortile has been swearing by these for the last eight years. And if you're wondering where he's taken them: “Paris, always; exploring the ancient sites of Hegra in AlUla , Saudi Arabia; and walking through the jungles of Angaur, the southernmost state in Palau .”

The sock-style slip-on from podiatrist-approved footwear brand Naot is another go-to of Flager, particularly for city trips. It's a fun switch up to an all-white-shoe and the slip-on style makes them extra convenient for a walk through airport security ( just don't forget socks ). Flager recommends pairing these with the Bombas cushioned no-show sock .

If you're a runner, you're probably no stranger to the magic of Brooks. The brand's running shoes are praised for offering unrivaled support and breathability. Associate articles director Megan Spurrell regularly chooses these when she's trying to pack light . “I've tried a number of Brooks running shoes, but the Ghosts 15 feel like the perfect pair. They're cushy, but still springy; they're lightweight, but sturdy.”

My in-flight uniform isn't complete without a supportive sneaker, and for me, that's my Hola Clifton 9s. I fly in them, I work out in them, I go on walks in them—I trust these shoes with my life. They're always the only athletic pair of sneakers I pack on every trip. They have what looks like a thick platform, but that extra cushion and shock absorption only adds to the shoe’s comfort level. The EVA foam midsole provides a ton of support and makes your feet feel like they're on a pillow.

These pretty blue runners are a go-to for senior destinations editor Shannon McMahon . They're designed with built-in flexible nylon plates that act as a springboard, advancing your stride and offering lots of support. These lightweight running shoes are breathable, cushioned, and stylish, too.

Meet Wilson' tried-and-true athletic trainer. The Saysh One is the first sneaker released by Allyson Felix 's brand, and was designed specifically for a woman's foot. You can wear these to the gym or a workout class, but they can also pass for your everyday casual sneaker, meaning this can be the only sneaker you pack on a trip if need be. “This shoe is also incredibly lightweight and molds to your foot,” says Wilson. “And it's designed with two of my favorite aesthetic traits: thin laces and a woven texture.”

Hokas are just so good, we had to add a second pair to our list. Glamour 's senior commerce editor, Jenifer Calle , swears by these for long, hot travel days. “I wore these sneakers when I was in San Antonio last year and they were a lifesaver for my feet,” Calle says. “My sneakers were very bouncy and breathable, so my feet never felt tired or sweaty.”
