Best Anti-Theft Purse For Travel: My Top 9 Travel Bag Picks

The best anti-theft purse is the one that foils pickpockets every time.

And if I’d had one of these clever items when I visited Beijing, I wouldn’t have looked like such an idiot… or worse, a criminal.

That’s exactly how I felt as I tried to convince embassy officials to  please  let me in to get a new passport – because mine had been stolen, along with my money.

But I didn’t have a pickpocket-proof purse, and I had committed the cardinal sin of travel: I had put my passport into an unsecured daypack.

Believe me, this is the kind of mistake you only make once, and I’d love to make sure you don’t have to make it at all!

So I now have not one, but  several  of the best anti-theft travel bags on the market. I never travel without one. And yes, my passport is now snugly secure.

Today I want to focus on day bags designed to  ward off pickpockets . I’ve been testing several of these during my travels and to paraphrase the well-known ad, I would ‘never leave home without one’.

There are two big names in anti-theft travel bags for women: PacSafe and Travelon. The last time I searched for “PacSafe” and “Travelon” on Amazon I found hundreds of results for these brands. While the two giants dominate the market, I’ve also looked at others and have added those further down this page.

These  travel accessories  range from tiny clutches to roomy purses and every color under the sun, so try to narrow down your choices before you shop by asking yourself:

• Are color and style important to you?
• Do you need something ultralight because you have back issues or is heavy fine?
• What do you plan to carry – just a wallet and phone or do you need space for your tablet, paperback book, glasses, keys, tissues, pens and a notebook for quick notes, a small camera… you get the picture!
• Will you be heading into the rainy season? The material could be an issue.
• Do you need oodles of pockets or do you like to have it all mixed up at the bottom of your purse?

Make sure you answer some of these questions before you shop!

What should i look for in the best anti-theft bags.

Each bag will be different, but each will have specific anti-theft properties that make them attractive.

The best crossbody bags should have as many of these characteristics as possible:

• Slash-resistant or slash-proof fabric (typically wire mesh)
• Strong fabric (canvas, nylon)
• Anti-slash straps (usually wire-reinforced)
• Locking zippers or closures OR hidden zippers
• RFID blocking pockets /compartments
• Multiple interior pockets with separate closures (like zippers)
• Non-flashy design or colors (to blend in rather than attract attention)
• Compact enough to be worn under a cardigan, jacket even a large pashmina, making it hard for thieves to spot.

Daypacks  are also good for use as travel purses, but under certain conditions:

• That they are designed specifically to thwart thieves
• That you wear them on your chest instead of your back (I do dislike that but that’s my personal bias) 
• That you avoid putting anything of value in exterior or unlocked pockets.

Some find that the best anti-theft backpack purse is the one that is versatile enough to act as both a backpack and a handbag in different situations.

Every Pacsafe bag (or most) shares a few features that set the brand apart from others:

Pacsafe vs Travelon: who wins?

Let’s talk Travelon vs PacSafe. Both PacSafe and Travelon offer a wide range of bag styles from compact backpacks, to wallets, to purses. Both incorporate great anti-theft features like slash-proof fabric/straps, RFID-blocking pockets and ways to lock zippers and closures. Both have highly-rated bags that people swear by.

So what are the biggest differences between PacSafe and Travelon? Price, color options, and overall style.

Pros and cons of Pacsafe

In general, PacSafe bags are more expensive than bags of similar quality (often by $20 or more, depending on the sales and bag in question), and they come with fewer color options. There are exceptions, of course, but PacSafe tends to put safety and practicality before fashion in their bag designs. 

In this case, safe really does equal boring, which can be great if your main priority is to transport your things securely and not be noticed. They are also sturdy and buying one means you may have to stick with it for a long time because it won’t wear out.

Pros and cons of Travelon

Travelon isn’t a designer purse but the brand does have a range of handbags with quaint stitching, stylish fasteners, and bolder color choices. 

If you’re budget-conscious, Travelon bags cost less overall. That said, the flashier colors and accessories might attract more attention, which could backfire if the point of buying an anti-theft bag was to deter thieves from snatching your things.

It really is up to you. My own personal choice is Pacsafe, which I find the most reliable and neutral, a feature I like for traveling. They’re also well made (mine seem indestructible) and well thought through. If you’re in need of a small and a larger travel anti-theft purse, you could decide to buy one of each (I don’t need much of a nudge to buy an extra bag for travel!)

It’s true, we are spoilt for choice. Our tremendous thirst for travel, combined with our need to keep our valuables safe, means that traveling without some kind of anti-theft bag is simply not an option anymore. Whichever bag you choose, make sure it is comfortable on your body because no matter how secure it is, if you don’t enjoy wearing it, you won’t.

I’ve been traveling for the past four months using a Travelon bag exclusively. It’s the Anti-Theft Tailored Hobo in black. It’s been very sturdy and very easy to use. Sometimes I have it full to the brim, and other times not so much. However, the one ding I’ll give it is that the pattern of the mesh webbing inside (to keep it from being slash-able) is showing through to the outside. The pattern is very apparent on both sides with the right lighting. Also, I should have gotten it in the dark blue. It would still be dark enough to hide dirt, but for the summer months the black was too dark. I didn’t think much about that when I bought it earlier in the year. I didn’t feel the need for the theft protection features of the bag during much of our trip, but it felt like the wise choice for the short time we spent in a couple areas of Europe. Better too safe than not enough. While I really don’t care much about my bag ‘style’ while traveling, the mesh pattern showing through now is even too much for me. Perhaps their bags in other fabrics would be better – ?

Travelling the world for work as I do, and travelling to some areas where personal safety is not to be underestimated, I suggest only the smallest sized cross body you can find. Wear it under your jacket if necessary and keep the colours dull or in line with your wardrobes. No red or bright coloured bags. Don’t take it off to eat, go to bathroom, or sit in cabs/cars. etc. I even put my pacsafe through the wash on delicate cold cycle after a trip. I have 6 different bags in various shapes and styles, but all cross body , all pacsafe and all used once a fortnight to once a month. . The thieves know they can’t cut steps or slash the bottoms of those bags. In some of the dodgiest places they have left me alone. Others not so lucky.

Totally agree that Pacsafe is the BEST anti-theft brand. They make wallets, purses, totes, backpacks and more. I must have more than a dozen of their bags, including two backpacks. They’re my necessities for travel anywhere.

I had bad luck with Travelon, the quality just isn’t there. Stick with the proven winner, Pacsafe. All your other tips are spot on, too.

I love my Pacsafe purses and backpack. They’re very stylish and the safety features are top notch. I travel a good bit and find these bags to be comfortable as well as durable.

I think Pacsafe bags are built much better than Travelon, though Travelon is definitely more fashionable. I absolutely loved having my Pacsafe Citysafe CS300 with me in Europe this summer. I used it to carry my camera (a6000), extra lens, gorillapod, and as a daypack. It even fits my iPad pro 10.5 in it’s logitech case. I felt totally confident on the metros and even my newly-made friends commented on it. Plus, the cranberry color is so cute! I even took it to the beach and was able to use a small cable to attach and lock it to my rented beach umbrella and/or chair while I went swimming. It really took a lot of stress out of the trip since I was traveling solo. 🙂

Totally agree about the Travelon brand. I bought a Travelon purse once (at ebags.com) and gently put my hand inside a pocket to check the depth. The fabric RIPPED at the seam. I sent it back and won’t purchase that brand again.

While I really like the stylishness of the Travelon handbags, they are very poorly made with poor quality materials, at least in the interior. I purchased a hobo style bag from Travelon about 3 years ago and sadly the lining ripped apart within 3 months. I was NOT impressed. The lining material was of a very inferior quality and the stitching was subpar. I’ve since switched to PacSafe, while not nearly as stylish, the material used for the entire bag is sturdier and more durable. I’ve been using my PacSafe citysafe 100 bag for 2 years now and it still looks like new.

Add my vote to the many who prefer PacSafe bags. I find they are much better quality and more durable construction than Travelon. I also find that many of the anti-theft bags (including the one featured in this article) look to me like diaper bags—decidedly unfashionable and not something I would want to wear around a European capital! I own the PacSafe bag with diagonal zippers pictured in the article, chosen for the size and more stylish looks. I use it as my personal item on the plane and it holds my water bottle, iPad mini, wallet, light jacket and snacks. PacSafe has a number of pretty and practical anti-theft purses and backpacks now. I’m not sure how old this article is but if it’s being updated, I’d suggest taking another look. 🙂

My travel advice is to carry 5,10 or 20 dollar cash in and out pocket in case you are robbed at gun point as I was. I only had a straw wrapper and the robber looked nervous so I was afraid to remove my outer layers to give him my security pouch. My travel partner was being held up by his accomplice who did not have a gun so she handed him her pouch and they grabbed it knocking her down on the curb in the process. If I had cash n that outer pocket I could have handed over and they may have run off with that .

Great travel advice. With slash proof straps on the bags, you need to make sure you keep it close to your body toward the front so “grab and run”or “drive by” can’t easily reach your bag. The bag ( especially when it’s crossbody) isn’t going anywhere So you don’t want to give the crook a leash.

My husband squatted low to ground to get perfect vantage point pic of Notre Dame when a man came behind him and started to reach out towards him. I yelled and the man backed away & left. Travel Tip: My mom has gotten into historical sewing and found out a trick from a professional costumer…spraying clothes (especially things that aren’t easily washable) with cheap vodka to keep them fresh if you can’t wash them right away.

I have so many packing tips… Using packing cells, using clip seal bags, taking a tiny pocket sized foldable backpack in case of unexpected purchases, downloading offline maps apps and translators and using dryer sheets in my luggage. But the best travel tip I have is actually a very simple one- look confident. I travel a lot and before I walk out the door each day I scan a map to orient myself, ensure I have an offline map just in case, put on some really reflective aviators and make sure I look like I know where I am going (even though most of the time I have no idea!) I find looking confident and purposeful means you don’t look like a tourist and makes you less of a target to anyone with ill intentions.

I just fell in love with the Travelon backpack, especially in the gray color. My travel tip is to pack everything in a carryon that can fit under the seat ? I dread the hustle of snatching and stressing for overhead space. Since I get cold easily, I wear lots of layers on the plane, which means less items to pack in my bag. Plus the bag I have is convertible and can either be a backpack or shoulder bag. It can serve several purposes. In my case, I travel for work so I also use it as my work bag as it fits my 15” laptop

Everyone says to never walk around an airplane in bare feet or socks. The minute I sit down in my seat, I take off my shoes & put on these. When we’re starting to land, I remove them & put my shoes back on. They’re soft, comfy, very affordable, lightweight & fold up into a soft pouch to throw in your carry on. I absolutely love my Travelon mini crossbody. I use it as my everyday purse. As for my number one travel tip, I think it’s to always carry a snack in your bag like RX bars which I love. When I’m starting to lag, eating an snack helps keep me going and makes me feel better mentally and physically. Plus eating something I know that my body tolerates well and not some random thing picked up off the street makes me feel better. Oh, and carry a bit of toilet paper folded up into a ziploc bag. One of my tips for traveling, especially if you’re traveling “carry-on only”, is to minimize your electronics. I always travel with a 7 inch tablet because it’s the perfect size for me to check my emails and search online. It also has a front & back facing camera with an internal speaker/microphone so I can take pictures and/or record videos. Plus, it’s so small that I don’t worry about it taking up space! My tablet has allowed me to leave my laptop and camera and all of their accessories at home which leaves me with more space and less to worry about. I love it!

I am list gal, too. I started my list a month before departure, adding and deleting items right up to the day before departure. I highlight items I did not use list after the trip. My list has helped me to not forget things and to minimize overpacking.

I never really thought about anti-theft handbags but this article is giving me reason to reconsider. As for tips, never ever pull out a was of money when at a street market. Just keep the equivalent of $30 in an easily accessible pocket.

Ive spent a great deal of time in Mexico on missions trips. Unfortunately, due to an autoimmune disease, I have a true allergy to the sun, so I am covered head to toe. But this actually helps me with safety. I keep a small crossbody purse hidden under my long, flowy blouses for valuables, then a bigger crossbody tote over my clothes that carries my medical supplies, water, and a small amount of cash in a small wallet attached by strap on the inside. I also look for maxi dresses or light pants with deep pockets or pockets that snap closed. Ive never had my things stolen, even in the most sketchy places. I also shop at second hand stores for travel clothes and accessories, that way, I wont be that upset if things are stolen.

The one trip to Japan, last year, made me realize that although I LOVE the RM Julian backpack, it was not practical when taking the train so often. A crossbody is more practical. Not only in having to get your ticket out and your usually rushing, but when you’re inside the train. Whether you’re sitting or standing, you’re always taking off and putting on your backpack. Kind of a slight inconvenience. With a crossbody, it stays in one place and everything is at your fingertips. I still love my RM for walking around because it feels better to my shoulders. Get a travel credit card with a limit on it. If it does get lost or stolen, it will prevent a lavish spending spree. Also carry a cc that doesn’t have charge fees associated with use, some cards will charge 3-5% per use. If two of you are travelling together, each person should have a different credit card in the event one gets lost/stolen and you need to cancel it, the other person has a different one for expenses. Do not travel with items you never want to loose, leave them at home.

I leave all of my “nice” jewelry at home. I wear a simple wedding band that if taken or lost will not make me cry. While in Buenos Aires a few years ago, my sister in law almost had her arm taken off when someone tried to take her Rolex watch off of her wrist. A guy ran by her, grabbed her wrist and attempted to unlatch the watch. My niece quickly realized what was happening and hit him in the face with her fist. His accomplice drove by on a motorcycle out of nowhere and he hopped on and sped off. My sister in law was bruised and a local shop owner gave her a bag of ice for her arm. All of this happened in a matter of seconds and we were in broad daylight among people! So now ALL jewelry stays at home except for a simple pair of unassuming earrings and my simple gold wedding band.

Wear a jacket with an inside pocket (preferably one that has a zip closure). Safer than a pants pocket while still being easy to get to when you need it. Great for cash, cards, and transit passes!

Thank you for sharing a variety of bag options. I usually carry a Sherpani bag because it is what I have at home. My travel tip is to carry a small pouch of essential oils including peppermint and lavender. Peppermint comes in handy with car sickness and/or yucky fumes/smells on the plane and lavender is helpful for soothing sunburns or other skin stuff.

One travel tip I have is to pack two or three binder clips with you. They are small to pack but useful for securing hotel/hostel/accommodation curtains shut. This helps block out the light more and make it easier to sleep which is helpful when you are adjusting to a new schedule & overcoming jet lag. Another tip is to try to switch whatever toiletries you can to solids. There are great options for solid shampoo bars, body wash bars, face wash bars, lotion bars, etc.

#1 travel tip: Don’t check luggage.

I’ve never lost luggage, and I don’t have to wait forever at baggage claim.

I like to pack my personal items in clear zip loc bags. They’re easy to identify and I can just grab them easily, especially in my mostly black travel bags!

I roll my shirts and tshirts and put them around my suitcase so in the middle i can put some fragile souvenirs like beer cans, or some eatables in glass (i love to eat, the beer is to give as present) and all is wrapped inside a plastic bag just in case! I do not carry an anti-theft bag yet, but I will be looking into it as the only times I’ve had things stolen while travelling are from a backpack! My travel tip is…also to do with bags..but I always chuck in a couple of roll-up nylon shopping bags when I am packing. They are great as dirty washing bags, shoe bags, beach and pool bags or to put your shopping in as a way to reduce the use of plastic shopping bags. My ones hold up to 20kg so they can carry a lot of groceries! And when you have bought too many souvenirs you can also use them as an extra carry-on bag (and I’ve never been charged for it). My favourites are envirosax (Australian) and Loqi. They all have beautiful eye-catching designs too.

I have however been burgled at night while asleep and lost many digital devices (family trip) which were scattered around the house we were sleeping in. My #1 travel tip (besides an anti-theft bag) is a Travel Checklist. A spreadsheet with all the items you travel with. I separate things by category…toiletries, clothes, travel documents, etc. If I don’t need a specific item on that trip, then just cross it out. I bought a fabulous cross body satchel in dark grey canvas years ago it has flaps and zippered compartments – and plenty of room for a rain jacket – trouble is it is so heavy that by the end of a long day my neck hurts. These recommendations are great! I need a travel bag for my upcoming trip to Italy, so this is super helpful. One travel tip I’ve heard over the years in the same vein that I think is really helpful is when you’re walking with a rolling suitcase to keep it either between you and your travel companion, or if you’re alone to keep the bag on the side of you closest to a wall. This applies to bags as well. That way it’s much harder for someone to swipe it as they go by, especially if they’re on a bike, Vespa, motorcycle, etc.

Desperate for a new travel handbag! Have to admit, on my last few trips I’ve tried to go hands free and gone for a funky ‘bum-bag’ or money belt, but these look super cute!! I don’t travel an awful lot but I am addicted to this blog! The best tips I picked up were to pick a colour and go with it for my travel wardrobe… we applied this when we had 2 weeks glampling in the south of France last year and travelled hand luggage only! Amazing! I would never have thought this was possible! The tip that I would share with you all (that I don’t recall seeing) is possibly not necessarily space saving (!!!) but my husband and I NEVER travel without a pack of cards. I haven’t tried any of these, but I think I tend to be less cautious than most… I don’t live dangerously by any means, but also don’t take special precautions over and above what I do at home. In a busy city environment I have a tiny cross body that fits my phone, passport and cash that I wear over my clothes but under my coat; then carry a larger purse/backpack (I have a convertible one) over my coat with my day trip items and usually my make up (which I take everywhere LOL).

As phones get smarter, and my travel experience grows, I find I really don’t need more than a wristlet most of the time. It’s lightweight and I grasp like a clutch while I’m walking but can let it dangle on my wrist for a moment if I need both hands. The amenity bags my husband gets on business class flight for work make great wristlets–ones from KLM look like leather, are generously sized (for a wristlet), unisex designs and have no logos on them.

These are all incredibly good tips. Security is one of the most important issues for me when traveling, so I have to admit I loved these bags. I definitely need one. One tip I haven’t seen here is to make copies of all your relevant documents (like passport, visa, etc.). If worst case scenario you have your stuff stolen, you’ll have copies that will help you get back on your feet.

My #1 travel tip is to wear your heaviest clothing on the plane. Boots, jeans, heavy coat, etc… Since planes tend to be colder as well, you can layer and wear multiple clothing items, leaving you more space in your bag!

I’ve been carrying the Pacsafe for years, paired with the Pacsafe travel wallet. The wallet has anti-scan, and velcro and zippers (multiple subtle pockets mean I can hide most of my cash), and it clips to a loop in my Pacsafe bag. The stuff I use frequently (phone, wallet) go in one section while super important items (passport, tickets) go in a separate, locked by zipper clip, section. The bag is worn cross body (as I always carry my bags) with my arm resting on it and a hand grasping the strap. I saw women in Venice (which is rife with pickpockets) wandering with their huge tote purses hanging open, wallets plainly visible.

I agree with your comments regarding Pac-safe products. I have the purse and the wallet, as well as the passport wallet. I love the fact that I can chain them into the bottom of the pac-safe purse as well! I’ve travelled extensively with mine to many countries, and I always feel so much safer. The hardware is undestructable.

I was wondering what your suggestion would be for carrying your DSLR camera. Should I have 2 bags? I’m thinking I would like to carry it and a purse in one and as a crossbody.

AAA sells purses ans backpacks at member rates (about $10 cheaper than online) Go with black and it’s simple enough to blend with a cute outfit. Or jazz it up with a broach or embellishment. Simple is easy and classic and in this instance safest.

I’ve got the travel on “essentials” bag and I love it. It’s small enough that it isn’t super bulky, but I can fit everything I need in there. Plus the top opening is smaller than the bottom of the bag, so it’s hard for someone to reach down into the bag without me knowing. AND it locks to my chair and has locking zippers 😉

Thanks for the info on these bags and ways to stay safe….my personal comments/tips: 1) I never, ever, carry a bag out when I will be in crowded public areas—I put my id, day cash, lip crème/mirror in an inside pocket of blouse/jacket or secure pants pocket. Sling a water bottle & umbrella if necessary…and go. You find out quickly what is vital……only carry those items in all possible situations. If I feel safer or absolutely have to carry a bag out–I make sure first that it is as small as possible and a cross-body style….that I can wear UNDER a light blouse, jacket, coat re weather conditions. These tactics keep me safer and prevent me from losing stuff….which I am prone to do if I carry too much!! There’s a sad story about Rx sunglasses and a sheep in Ireland!!

I have a PacSafe cross body bag. It’s not the most fashionable but I do like it. Locking zippers, wires in strap to prevent slash ‘n grab thieves ,Rfid internal picket, external pocket for water bottle too. I chose this style for the safety features but also, I can put my 35mm DSLR camera inside the bag and not look completely like a tourist at times.

I was on the search for an anti-theft bag recently that wasn’t ugly and wasn’t too big. I was set on one of the ones shown here, but when I arrived at a local luggage shop, I found the Travelon Anti-Theft Signature E/W Shoulder Bag in black. It is the perfect size so that I didn’t feel weighed down or look too touristy, and because it has various zippered compartments and decent depth, I was able to also use it for as a camara bag for my compact-system camera with extra lens. I have the Pacsafe City Safe 100 GII and although its not attractive like the previous comment its a great purse and holds a lot. I also use the DayMakers Convertible Backpack — they have a few different sizes, but its great as the zippers connect and there are lots of zippered pockets and the straps are adjustable to wear over one shoulder or wear as regular backpack.

I usually use a day pack or cross body leather purse but its good to see other options. Some of the reviews on amazon mentioned that the pac safe bags started falling apart after some extended use. Have any of your other readers mentioned this?

So far, I think that I will get the Timbuktu messenger bag. There’s only 6 reviews on Amazon so its relatively new and early to judge the durability. I LOVE the fact that it has velcro straps to attach to bike handlebars—I’m a cyclists and make full use of city bike share systems at home and abroad.

What is an Anti-Theft Bag?

If this is your first time hearing about an anti-theft bag, you might be wondering what it is exactly. These bags are designed with special features that make them more difficult to gain access to and harder to steal. They have technology that other bags don’t have.

Pros:   The material is easy to clean and is water-resistant. It’s perfect size for those who don’t like to carry a lot of stuff, which leads to it not being overly heavy. Cons:  No water bottle pocket. The credit card slots are not tight, so cards don’t feel securely fastened in.

I like the Pacsafe messenger bag because it looks more like a generic travel bag, rather than a purse. I travel often with Nick, who doesn’t really want to carry around a purse, so I end up carrying the stuff all the time. This bag is more masculine and doesn’t look like a purse, so we can share the responsibility of carrying it. You can buy this bag in 5 different colors.

The size is 11.4 x 9.3 x 2.8 in. I’ve found that it can be very slim if you don’t pack it full of bulky items, but it has plenty of space to expand in case you do have a lot of things to pack in it. The main compartment provides plenty of space for smaller items like sunglasses and wallet, with lots of organizational pockets in the interior. It has a lockable zippered main compartment with 1 zippered RFID blocking pocket on one side and 1 regular zippered pocket, plus a phone pocket, card slots and key clip. There are also two side slip pockets for a small water bottle or sunglasses. I don’t find that a water bottle actually fits well there, though.

The thing I like most about this bag is how sleek and simple it is. The pockets are all very discreet and the zipper is hidden inside the seam so it’s kept safe from would-be thieves.

The size of the bag is 8. 7″H x 11. 8″W x 4″D with an adjustable shoulder strap. It weighs just 0.93 pounds thanks to the lightweight recycled Polyester material it’s made with.

A popular item for travelers visiting destinations that are prone to pickpocketing and theft is a purse or bag that has special features to prevent it. Tourist areas in Europe and beyond are full of pickpockets , especially in crowded attractions.

I certainly considered a theft proof bag when planning my trip to Southeast Asia , which is known for bag slashings even when you’re riding in a tuk-tuk.

So what do you need to know about theft proof bags for travel? 

• Are they worth the splurge?
• Do you even need one at all? 
• What types are on the market?

What Does a Theft Proof Bag Entail?

A theft proof bag is typically a bag marketed towards travelers for its ability to prevent, or at least delay, theft. 

Here’s an example: For a purse, it could be a crossbody with secret pockets . The straps might be metal mesh lined to prevent slashing or it might have RFID pockets to prevent the scanning of your passport and credit cards.

Important Features to Have in a Theft Proof Bag

It’s easy to get caught up in all the bells and whistles, but there are only a few features that your theft proof bag actually needs to have. 

• The first is zippers or some sort of closure. Most crimes are crimes of convenience when travelers leave their open bags out of their sight.
• It’s also nice to have a carabiner or clip for your zipper so that someone can’t come up to you and pull on it. Guest blogger Kristin found this out firsthand while traveling in Portugal when the features on her bag saved her from getting pickpocketed .
• Hidden compartments are also a good idea, as someone has to really rifle through your bag to find your wallet and important documents.
• While not essential, a detachable strap that can be looped around a table leg or your train seat gives you additional peace of mind.

One important thing to think about is your safety . You don’t want to be seriously hurt because you refused to give up your bag to a criminal.

The other downside to theft proof bags is the cost , as they are usually more expensive than your standard purse because of the various features they offer.

Creating Your Own Theft Proof Bag

If the price of theft proof bags has you worried (averaging $40+ minimum), fear not, you can replicate some of the features with purses or bags you already have at home.

• First of all, make sure the bag in question is either a backpack or crossbody , as one-shoulder bags are easy to pull off your shoulder.
• You can also create zippers that are difficult to open by attaching a carabiner , keyring, or safety pin to keep them together or attached to the strap.
• Keep a fake wallet on hand in an outer pocket that you can throw at a potential thief. Fill it with those fake credit cards you’re always getting in the mail and a few small bills.
• And if you’re worried about having your card information stolen over RFID, you can purchase an RFID blocking wallet for less than $20 on Amazon !

We leave on our year-long trip in two days. I took the plunge and purchased the PacSafe Citysafe LS75 anti-theft cross body travel bag. It was expensive but I like the features including the locking zippers, anti-slash fabric and cross body strap. I have been using it for a month now to get used to its size and compartments. I think it will work well. I can carry my iPad mini with its keyboard as well as all of the other usual purse things.

I use a normal backpack with caribiners attached to the zippers, and so far that has worked really well in Europe! I also wrapped my emergency credit card in aluminum foil. As apocalyptic as that sounds, it works just as well as an RFID blocking wallet for so much less!

There are also scarves with pockets that you can put valuables in. Came in handy when travelling on tours.

When I am solo traveling I prefer a theft proof bag, as I don’t have anyone in a group to help me lookout for pickpockets, etc. I felt much safer carrying a small crossbody with locking zips that I used tucked underneath a sweater or jacket. I had a large open tote with cheapo souvenirs/food items that could have looked like a purse and may have been a decoy. Come to think of it, even with a group there is a little more peace of mind having some bells and whistles to help keep your stuff safe.

We purchased the Travelon Anti-Theft Classic Mini Shoulder Bag so our reviewer could put it to the test. Keep reading for our full product review.

Travel purses have to meet some unique demands. They have to offer plenty of organization options, enhanced security features, and be crafted from lightweight material that doesn’t weigh you down on the road. While the ultimate goal is deterring potential thieves, you should still be able to quickly access your ID, phone, and cash. Travelon’s Anti-Theft Classic Mini Shoulder Bag checks many of the requisite safety boxes. From secured pockets to RFID-blocking card slots, it can keep your identity and possessions safe when you’re away from home. 

Design: Built for traveling light

Design is everything when it comes to a bag’s performance and the Travelon Mini was styled with the demands of travel in mind. The shoulder bag’s main compartment and front pouch are fitted with security zippers; these zippers have a clip on the pull tab that attaches to a small D-ring so they can’t be unzipped easily. The purse has two more exterior pockets—one on the front and one on the back. The front pocket doesn’t have a security zipper, but it’s not really large enough for anything you’d want to keep secure anyway—it’s more suited to chapstick or hand sanitizer than a phone or wallet. The back pocket also doesn’t have a security zipper, but it rests against the body when worn so you don’t have to worry too much about it.  

A thick, slash-resistant material makes up the exterior and the adjustable shoulder strap. And when Travelon says slash-resistant, they really mean it. Stainless steel is woven into the fibers of the mesh, which gives it extra strength and durability without any extra weight. You can’t see the stainless steel, but it certainly feels thicker and more durable than fabrics of similar weight.

We chose to wear it as a crossbody—as opposed to a shoulder bag—because it felt more secure in a crowd.

The buckles on the shoulder strap are easy to open so you can secure the bag to a pole on public transportation, to the handle of your luggage , or onto a stroller or beach wagon. And as mentioned, the 56-inch strap (when fully extended) is adjustable, so the bag can be worn on the shoulder or crossbody for added security.

The interior features four slip pockets, one of which is RFID-blocking for passports, IDs, and credit cards. RFID-blocking technology (that’s radio frequency identification blocking technology) ensures hackers aren’t able to access your credit card or ID info through your bag. You can feel the rigid RFID-blocking plate around the four card slots and passport pocket, but we didn’t find that to be a problem. Along with this pocket, the main compartment has two additional slip pockets which are large enough for a portable charger , pack of gum, or protein bar.

The bag’s interior also has a key strap with a removable flashlight. You can attach your keys so they won’t fall out or get lost in your bag and the flashlight can illuminate a door handle or light your way as you search through your bag.

Performance: Organization with added security

The key to easy travel is organization and if you’re traveling light, the Mini will do. The RFID-blocking card slots and passport pocket are ideal if you want to leave your wallet at home and since the pocket is right at the opening of the bag, it’s easy to access your cards once you unlatch the compartment’s security zipper. 

That said, we generally like to travel with our regular wallet, so we wanted to see if the Travelon Mini had room to accommodate it. Ours fit in the main compartment, but it filled the entirety of the bag, leaving little room for anything else. If you’re a light traveler, though, this is one of the bag’s selling points. At 8.5 x 8.5 x 2 inches, it’s barely larger than an iPad Mini. 

The security zipper is fine when it comes to retrieving ID and credit cards (as you don’t usually need to pull those out in a hurry), but we found the back pocket worked better for our cell phone. While the back pocket doesn’t have a locking zipper, it’s against the body where it’s significantly more difficult for a pick-pocket to access . Retrieving your phone is also easier as you don’t have to fumble with a security zipper as your call goes to voicemail. 

While it performed well, it’s really only for those who travel really light.

Aside from the various pockets, we also appreciate the bag’s adjustable shoulder strap. We chose to wear it as a crossbody—as opposed to a shoulder bag—because it felt more secure in a crowd, didn’t slip off our shoulder, and we didn’t have to pay any attention to it during activities. 

We tested our Travelon Mini on a beach trip where tourists tend to be easy targets. With everything packed, we made our way through a crowded beachfront with the strap secured to our beach wagon . It gave us peace of mind knowing our money and info were harder for thieves to access. 

We also put it to daily use, and while it performed well, it’s really only for those who travel really light. If you like to carry a planner, water bottle, snacks, Band-Aids, pouch of random stuff, and your kids’ belongings on top of that, it certainly isn’t the purse for you. If you’re more of a credit card, phone, and ID type, though, it’ll work nicely. 

Price: Light on the wallet, big on benefits

As far as travel bags go, the $50 Travelon Mini falls at the lower end of the price range. It’s not a budget bag, but for a lightweight, security-laden model, it’s priced right. The RFID-blocking technology, double security pockets, and slash-resistant fabric and strap come at a very reasonable price. 

Competition: Similar quality, larger capacity

Baggallini Everywhere Shoulder Bag: If you’re looking for a larger bag that can hold more than just your wallet and cell phone, Baggallini’s $100 Everywhere Shoulder Bag is worth considering. The 13.5 x 9 x 5-inch bag features 10 RFID-blocking credit card slots, a lipstick/pen holder, key fob, detachable coin purse, and multiple exterior pockets. The back pocket can also be unzipped and turned into a sleeve so you can slip it over the handle of your luggage. Like the Travelon Mini, the Baggallini Shoulder Bag is also available in multiple colors including red, beige, black, gray, green, and blue.

Top Tips for Traveler Protection When Traveling Abroad

Tourists are easy targets for scammers, pickpockets and thieves. Protecting your money, credit cards, and important documents while traveling internationally is crucial to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey. The latest survey of the world’s most experienced travelers revealed expert tips to protect your valuables when traveling abroad.

The Importance of Splitting Up Valuables

Most travelers reported splitting up their valuables was one of the best ways to prevent losing everything at once due to loss or theft, according to the Summer 2024 Global Rescue Traveler Sentiment and Safety Survey.

“Separating and securing your valuables ensures that if a thief nabs a shoulder bag or a pickpocket steals your wallet you still have access to some of your money, credit cards and duplicates of other important documents,” said Harding Bush, associate director of Security Operations at Global Rescue, the world’s leading provider of medical, security, evacuation and travel risk management services.

A quarter (26%) of male travelers said splitting their valuables to prevent losing everything was their top choice, and nearly a third of female respondents (30%) used the same method – but it was not their leading option.

Travel Protection Preferences for Men Vs. Women

Women responding to the survey favored different protection methods compared to men. Seven-out-of-10 female travelers (31%) chose a crossbody purse or bag as their number one method to protect valuables from loss or pickpockets. Only 5% of men identified a crossbody bag as their preferred anti-theft method. The crossbody purse or bag is more of a deterrent to bag snatchers on motorcycles or foot who grab bags, purses or backpacks from tourists and make a quick getaway.

A fifth of male respondents (22%) revealed that using zippered pockets was their runner-up way to keep valuables safe during travel. “Travelers wearing clothing with zippered pockets or pockets on the inside, like a vest or a sport coat, make it difficult to snatch a wallet,” Bush said.

The survey revealed a major attitudinal distinction between how women and men protect their valuables during travel.

More than twice the percentage of men surveyed said they don’t use any method to protect their valuables compared to their female counterparts. One out of four male survey respondents (25%) don’t have a method to preserve their valuables compared to less than 10% of women who do.

Other Anti-Theft and Loss Prevention Methods

Other anti-theft and loss-prevention methods used by the world’s most experienced travelers include money belts (10%), travel wallets (5%), fanny packs or waist packs (3%), backpack locks (2%), undercover leg or wrist wallets (1%) and dummy wallets (<1%).

No one opted for shoes with hidden compartments.

Here are some additional tips to help travelers keep their cash, credit cards and important documents safe.

• Keep Copies of Important Documents: Make copies of your passport, ID, travel itinerary, and credit cards. Store these copies separately from the originals in case your documents are lost or stolen. You can also consider storing digital copies in a secure cloud storage service.
• Use RFID-Blocking Products: RFID-blocking wallets, passport holders, and card sleeves can help protect your information from electronic theft. These products block the signals that thieves use to scan and steal your data.
• Be Mindful of Your Surroundings: Stay vigilant in crowded or touristy areas where pickpocketing is common. Keep your belongings close to your body and avoid displaying large amounts of cash.
• Notify Your Bank and Credit Card Companies: Inform your bank and credit card companies about your travel plans to avoid any issues with your cards being flagged for suspicious activity. Provide them with your travel dates and destinations to prevent disruptions in your transactions.

Why do I need this? 🤔

This crossbody backpack was the only "purse" I brought on our whirlwind trip through Italy — including Rome, Cinque Terre, Florence and Pompeii — and it held up incredibly through our 10-day adventure. That's no small feat: It was fairly drizzly most of the time we were there, and on certain days, we walked 20,000 steps or more. The bag not only had to stand up to wet conditions, but the rigors of heavy use: me constantly putting it on and taking it off, adjusting the strap and opening it multiple times a day. I also had to carry enough items to get me through up to 12 hours of sightseeing.

And folks: It performed marvelously .

The real value here: The level of organization and storage space afforded by such a deceptively sleek, compact bag. There are a ton of compartments: a larger main zipper compartment, a slide-in pocket that clips shut with the bag, a small zipper compartment on the front, two side mesh water bottle holders, a small zipped pocket on the strap and more. With all of these, I was able to stay prepared for anything. Some days I was able to fit a travel umbrella, reusable water bottle, wallet, passport, guidebook ( thanks, Rick Steves ), snacks, sunglasses, shawl, Kindle, external battery and extra cords, earbuds, iPhone, toiletries and medications, selfie stick and even more . Phew! That's a wild amount considering the bag isn't exactly massive at 15 by 7 by 3.5 inches.

Oh, yeah: It was comfortable. The shoulder strap is well-padded, but if your shoulder ever gets tired, the bag converts into a fanny pack (it's not necessarily made to do this, but it works perfectly well). It also washes easily — my trusty Sugar-Free Red Bull spilled in one of the pockets, but I simply rinsed out the bag at our hotel and let it air dry, and it was totally fine by the next day.
