Wil reviews the Bontrager Kovee RSL wheelset

The Bontrager Kovee RSL is an incredibly lightweight and ultra-premium wheelset that’s purpose-built for XC riding and racing. Replacing the outgoing Kovee XXX wheelset, the Kovee RSL introduces a new generation carbon rim that’s said to be lighter and more compliant than its predecessor. Along with its svelte build and minimalist DT Swiss hubs, this wheelset is claimed to weigh just 1,199g. That’s lighter than most road wheels!

Though they were officially unveiled to the public in late 2022, the Bontrager Kovee RSL wheels had already been raced throughout the 2021 season by the Trek Factory Racing team where they earned Olympic and World Championship gold under the likes of Jolanda Neff and Evie Richards. Not a bad introduction eh?

But while their racing credentials have been well and truly proven, I was curious to see how the Kovee RSL wheels would perform for us mere mortals. Is this just a delicate racing-only wheelset? How exactly would these lightweight hoops stand up to proper mountain biking and questionable line choices from a hack rider like me?

What models are there in the Kovee wheel range?

The Bontrager Kovee RSL wheelset sits at the top of a three model lineup that includes the Kovee Pro and Kovee Elite. All three wheelsets are brand new for 2023 and utilise carbon rims with an identical profile. However, changes to the carbon layup results in a heavier rim as you go down the range. You’ll also find different hubs and spokes used on the cheaper wheelsets.

Here’s a quick-fire comparison between the three models;

  • Kovee RSL – 1,199g claimed weight, RRP: $3,799 AUD
  • Kovee Pro – 1,385g claimed weight, RRP: $2,219 AUD
  • Kovee Elite – 1,585g claimed weight, RRP: $1,579 AUD

In this review I’ll mostly be focussing on my experience of testing the top-end Kovee RSL wheelset. I do have some further thoughts on the cheaper models, which I’ll touch on in just a bit.

315g carbon rims – whoa!

The big story with the Bontrager Kovee RSL wheelset is its unique OCLV carbon fibre rims. Compared to the previous Kovee XXX model, Bontrager has reduced the rim depth to 22mm in order to increase vertical compliance. The bead hooks are also thicker at 3mm, and they incorporate a broader radius that’s claimed to offer better impact strength while reducing the chance of pinch-flats. Internal rim width remains at 29mm, which is well suited to modern 2.3-2.4in wide XC tyres.

Although the new rim shape and profile is the same on the cheaper Kovee Pro and Elite models, the carbon layup is different between all three. A Kovee RSL rim is claimed to weigh a staggering 315g, which is considerably lighter than the Kovee Pro (375g) and the Kovee Elite (425g).

The new carbon rims also feature an offset spoke bed to help balance out spoke tensions. Each wheel utilises 24 x Sapim CX-Ray bladed spokes, which are laced to DT Swiss hubs using a 2-cross pattern. Up front is a minimalist 180 hub, and out back is a 240s hub that was specifically chosen for its larger and more durable bearing design. It features the Ratchet EXP freehub mechanism with a 54T driver to deliver a crisp engagement of 6.66°.

Bontrager Kovee RSL wheelset weight

Confirmed weight for our Bontrager Kovee RSL test wheelset is 1,217g including tubeless tape. That’s slightly heavier than claimed, which is likely due to Bontrager weighing the wheels without tubeless tape.

Even still, it’s a rather astonishing figure to see on the scales and it makes these undoubtedly the lightest mountain bike wheels we have ever tested. For reference, here’s how the Kovee RSL compares to the confirmed weights of some of the other XC wheels I’ve ridden;

  • Bontrager Kovee RSL – 1,217g
  • Roval Control SL – 1,278g
  • Reserve 28|XC – 1,464g
  • Roval Control Carbon – 1,505g
  • DT Swiss XRC 1200 – 1,516g
  • Reynolds Black Label 309/289 XC  – 1,520g
  • Giant XCR 1 Carbon – 1,531g
  • Crank Brothers Synthesis XCT 11 – 1,575g
  • DT Swiss XRC 1501 – 1,583g
  • Oquo MP30 Team – 1,616g

Only the Roval Control SL comes close, though it’s worth noting that the Roval wheels features DT Swiss 180 hubs front and rear. The fact that Bontrager was able to go even lighter while using a heavier 240s rear hub is bloody impressive.

bontrager kovee rsl carbon xc wheelset specialized chisel ltd hardtail

Being a contemporary XC racing wheelset, the Bontrager Kovee RSL is only available in a 29in diameter and with Boost hub spacing.

The DT Swiss hubs utilise a Centerlock rotor interface and come standard with a SRAM XD freehub. Unfortunately Bontrager doesn’t include 6-bolt adapters or a Shimano Micro Spline freehub in the box, nor will you find any Torque Cap adapters. These items are available to purchase separately, but I’d like to see them included given the high asking price for these wheels.

At least you get tubeless valves, and the rims are taped from the factory. You can use the thick plastic Bontrager TLR rim strips if you prefer, but tubeless tape is lighter and in our experience it’s way less of a hassle when it comes to fitting and removing tyres.

Speaking of, I’ve fitted 2.35in Specialized Fast Trak and 2.4in Maxxis Rekon Race tyres to our Kovee RSL test wheelset, all of which have been easy to install and set up tubeless. Due to the rocky nature of my local trail network, I added a CushCore XC insert into the rear wheel to help ward off pinch-flats and potential rim damage.

On the trail

Over the past six months the Bontrager Kovee RSL wheels have mostly lived on my Specialized Chisel LTD hardtail , though they’ve also spent time on the Canyon Lux World Cup , the Orbea Oiz  and Trek Supercaliber .

Given their incredibly low weight, it’s no surprise that the Kovee RSL wheels deliver incredible speed on the trail. The boost in acceleration has been immediately noticeable on every bike I’ve fitted them to, and it flags one of the big reasons why you’d consider upgrading to a lightweight carbon wheel in the first place.

bontrager kovee rsl carbon xc wheelset

Those stupendously light rims result in minimal lag every time you step on the pedals, which is particularly apparent when you’re constantly accelerating and decelerating on rough and choppy tech climbs. They respond well to power moves on slow-speed technical sections, making it easier to hop up and over rock ledges and root mats. The low inertia is also beneficial through twisty singletrack, with the Kovee RSL wheels feeling whippy and willing to change direction.

Their overall precision is accentuated by the taut build and fast pickup from the 54T Ratchet EXP freehub. No, it doesn’t boast the insane engagement of an Industry Nine Hydra or a Chris King hub, but I find anything with less than 10° between clicks to be more than sufficient. I also like that the DT Swiss freehub whirr is considerably quieter than its American competitors. Along with the stealthy black-on-black graphics, the Kovee RSLs are quite subtle.

bontrager kovee rsl carbon xc wheelset orbea oiz

They’re no bone-shakers

Given the responsive performance, I was surprised by the smooth ride quality of the Bontrager Kovee RSL wheelset. This was particularly welcome on my hardtail, with the shallow rim profile and 24 spoke count providing a nice degree of vertical give in each wheel. Paired up with the 2.4in wide Maxxis Rekon Race tyres and with pressures in the low-20psi range, square edges don’t feel quite as sharp and high-frequency rubble is nicely filtered.

They’re not quite as compliant as the Reserve 28|XC wheelset on the Cervelo ZFS-5 , and there’s another secret wheelset I’m testing at the moment that is smoother again. Still, the Kovee RSL is one of the more nuanced carbon wheelsets out there in terms of trail feedback. It’s also worth acknowledging that they’re a heckuva lot more compliant than the old Kovee XXX wheels with their deep-section carbon rims. As a lighter rider, I found those tended to shake my teeth out on rockier singletrack. That isn’t the case with the Kovee RSL, which strike a really nice balance for an XC wheelset.

Bontrager Kovee RSL vs DT Swiss XRC 1200

A popular alternative in the high-end XC carbon wheel market is the DT Swiss XRC 1200, which comes stock on a number of high-end bikes including the Canyon Lux World Cup CFR Team . For a direct comparison, I fitted the Bontrager Kovee RSL wheelset to our Lux World Cup test bike and embarked on some back-to-back testing.

bontrager kovee rsl carbon xc wheelset canyon lux world cup cfr team

The weight drop was immediately noticeable, with the Kovee RSLs coming in 300g lighter (1,217g vs 1,516g). A lot of that weight reduction is in the rim itself, which being further away from the centre of the wheel affords a bigger advantage compared to losing the same number of grams from the hubs.

Acceleration was noticeably quicker with the Kovee RSL wheelset, though I also found it to offer more compliance. The DT Swiss XRC 1200 wheelset is certainly on the stiffer side, which is likely due to a combination of the carbon layup, the taller rim height (25mm vs 22mm) and the higher spoke count (28 vs 24).

Whatever the case, the Kovee RSL wheels offer a slightly smoother ride that has been a great match for the firm and racy Lux World Cup. Along with the significant weight advantage, it’s for sure the better riding wheelset out of the two.

bontrager kovee rsl vs dt swiss xrc 1200

Bontrager Kovee RSL vs Roval Control SL

Another wheelset we can compare directly to the Bontrager Kovee RSL is the Roval Control SL.

The Control SLs come in at the same price of $3,800 AUD, and their weight isn’t too far off at 1,278g. That’s barely 60g more than the Kovee RSL wheelset, which largely comes down to the heavier rims.

While the Control SLs get the same 29mm internal rim width, the overall profile is quite different with hookless beads that employ the distinctive FlatTop design. Each side is 4mm wide, with the goal being to more evenly distribute impact forces and reduce the chance of pinch-flats.

roval control sl carbon wheels 2021 specialized epic evo s-works sidluxe shock

Roval builds the Control SL wheels with its own alloy straight-pull hubs, though they’re loaded with DT Swiss 180 internals including the SiNC ceramic bearings. Each wheel is then laced with 24x DT Swiss Aerolite bladed spokes and secured with ProLock alloy nipples.

In terms of ride quality the Roval Control SL is a similarly responsive and whippy wheelset. I’ve not had the chance to test it back-to-back with the Kovee RSL, so it’s difficult to make a detailed comparison of the ride quality without having the two set up with identical tyres and being ridden on the same bike. However, from previous experience I’ve found the Control SLs to offer superb performance on the trail with a nice balance between precision and compliance.

Mick’s also spent a lot of time riding the cheaper version, so check out his Roval Control Carbon wheel review for more.

Servicing & durability

Thankfully I have no major durability issues to report, with our Bontrager Kovee RSL test wheelset yet to suffer from any broken spokes or rim damage. We’ve certainly not gone easy on them either, with numerous rock strikes having been inflicted on both the front and rear rims. The Kovee RSLs have felt solid throughout, with no weird spoke-twanging or sponginess to be detected even on hard landings.

I did have to true the rear wheel after the first 500km of riding, but this only required a quarter turn on a couple of nipples to get it running straight again. You’ll need an adjustable wrench or a dedicated tool to hold onto the bladed spokes when truing the wheel, which is easy enough to do in the workshop but potentially a challenge out on the trail.

Bontrager has built the Kovee RSL wheelset with mostly the same 296mm spokes, with only the drive-side rear specifying a 297mm spoke length. It would be nice to see some spares included in the box, though straight-pull spokes in these lengths are pretty easy to source these days.

bontrager kovee rsl carbon xc wheelset

The only notable issue I encountered through testing was a single pop from the freehub during an earlier test ride. Despite my best efforts I’ve not been able to replicate the issue since, and with no visible damage on the freehub ratchet splines, I suspect this may have just been a random anomaly.

Otherwise the hub bearings are still spinning smooth, and the freehub grease is only just starting to show some discolouration. The astonishingly simple Ratchet EXP mechanism can be pulled apart without tools, making it easy to clean and re-grease when necessary.

Warranty & crash replacement

As light as the Bontrager Kovee RSL wheelset is and as well as it rides on the trail, if you’re shelling out close to four grand for a wheelset you’re going to want some confidence behind your investment.

Firstly, it’s worth pointing out that the Bontrager Kovee RSL wheelset doesn’t actually have an official rider weight limit. Yes, really!

Furthermore, they come with a lifetime warranty and Bontrager’s 2-year Carbon Care Loyalty program. This is essentially a crash replacement scheme, which offers “ free repair or replacement in the unlikely event that you structurally damage your wheels while riding within the first two years of ownership “.

That coverage isn’t as generous as the schemes offered by Reserve and Crank Brothers, but I still think it’s impressive that Bontrager offers any crash replacement at all for what is one of the lightest wheelsets on the market.

  • Break one get one free | Is no questions asked crash replacement too good to be true?

What about the cheaper Bontrager Kovee wheels?

While the Bontrager Kovee RSL impresses in many regards, there’s no getting away from the fact that $3,799 AUD is a lot of money for a mountain bike wheelset.

If I was shelling out my own cash, I’d more likely be looking towards the mid-tier options like the Roval Control Carbon ($2,000 AUD / 1,505g) and the DT Swiss XRC 1501 ($2,349 AUD / 1,583g). I’d also be seriously considering the Bontrager Kovee Pro wheelset, which sells for $2,219 AUD while still boasting a remarkable claimed weight of just 1,385g.

The Kovee Pro features OCLV carbon rims with an identical profile to the Kovee RSL, albeit with a heavier layup that results in an extra 60g of material per wheel. Along with the 28x Sapim CX-Ray spoke build, I suspect it’ll be a slightly stiffer and stronger wheelset that’ll be better suited to bigger and more aggressive riders.

Of course Bontrager’s Rapid Drive 108 XC hubs don’t have the same curb appeal as the DT Swiss hubs used on the Kovee RSL wheelset, but they do offer double the pickup speed with 108 points of engagement. We’ve also found them to be more durable than previous offerings from Bontrager, and spares are readily available through Trek’s extensive dealer network.

Flow’s Verdict

The Bontrager Kovee RSL wheels aren’t just ridiculously lightweight, they also ride beautifully on the trail. They feel fast and whippy, delivering explosive acceleration every time you put pedal to the metal. And compared to heavier wheelsets (which is most of them), the low rim weight and taut build provides a tangible improvement to your bike’s handling response.

Despite their solidity and precise feel they offer good vertical compliance, especially when paired to a modern high volume 2.4in wide tyre. The result is a nice balance of attributes that works exceptionally well for XC racing duties.

At just shy of $4K however, they are not an inexpensive wheelset, and for that price we’d really like to see Bontrager including the optional extras.

For those who aren’t up to spending that kind of coin, it’ll be worth considering the Kovee Pro or even Kovee Elite wheelsets, both of which benefit from the new carbon rim design and come with the same 2-year crash replacement guarantee.

But if you’re a diehard weight weenie who’s after one of the lightest mountain bike wheelsets going, it doesn’t get much better than the Bontrager Kovee RSL.

Bontrager RSL Blendr Stem review

No clutter on the handlebars and perfectly centred accessories sounds great, but does it work.

Bontrager RSL Blendr Stem

Cyclingnews Verdict

An excellent option if your needs line up. Double check though, because making changes takes a bit of time and it’s not as universal as the concept sounds. The strongest pull for this design is going to come from those who have a desire to stick with Trek products for a matching look.

Light, stiff, carbon stem

Plenty of stiffness even over rough gravel roads

Captured screws make for easier installation

Making configuration changes requires removal of handlebars

You can trust Cyclingnews Our experts spend countless hours testing cycling tech and will always share honest, unbiased advice to help you choose. Find out more about how we test.

Modern cycling often means accessories on the handlebars. Mounting those accessories is a challenge that has given rise to a wide breadth of manufacturers with innovative solutions. Brands such as K-Edge and Bar Fly have filled a need and created mounts that handle everything you could need. What those solutions tend to have in common is that they are an add-on.

If you are looking to upgrade to something from our list of the best road handlebars you might be replacing your stem anyway. Why not choose a stem with an integrated mounting solution? It could clean up the front of the bike and keep your accessories mounted to the exact centre of the bike. If you are picky about how your bike looks there's a certain draw but it has to work. With that in mind, we spent time with the Bontrager RSL Blendr stem understanding how it works and what it does best. If you like the sound of simplifying the front of your bike, keep reading to see our thoughts on the Bontrager take on a solution.

Bontrager RSL Blendr Stem the view from the saddle

Design and aesthetics

Let's be honest here, you could use an alloy stem and get similar performance for a lot less money. Bontrager itself offers the Pro Blendr stem with the same features for less than half the price. The RSL Blendr stem does win on weight, saving 13 grams with a weight of 120 grams for a 100mm stem, but that's an awful small difference for the price. There is also some additional stiffness and better vibration reduction possible with carbon but that's not why it makes sense for some people.

In most situations, this is an emotional purchase. It's all about matching the style and looking great on your bike. That's okay, those are important considerations also. Your bike is a collection of design choices that lead to high performance and there are certain pieces that make sense to keep matching. A stem is one of those pieces and the Bontrager RSL Blendr stem is a choice you won't regret making.

Staring at your stem while making your way up yet another climb is sure to bring a bit of joy when it looks this good. The shapes are smooth and organic with elegant curves and valleys. The finish is a matte black that somehow manages to ward off fingerprints that are common to finishes of this style. It's not completely impervious but it's not a magnet either. From the top, these are the features you will spend time staring at.

Off the bike, you can take in the other details. Sitting in contrast to the matte black is glossy, bronze, metallic text. On either side is a large RSL wordmark while the underside displays the text "Race Shop Limited." The text on the sides reads in the same direction so keep that in mind if you are considering switching the direction of the 7-degree angle. On the other hand, if you were to swap it, you'd have the pleasure of regularly seeing the elegant typesetting of the otherwise hidden "Race Shop Limited" text.

At the front of the stem are the pieces that make everything the Blendr integration work. Instead of a connected faceplate the RSL stem holds the bars with a pair of bands. That leaves the centre section free for either a single, or double, Blendr mount. What you can't see is that moulded into the carbon at the top and bottom is a small space where tabs on the nylon mount fit into the stem. You'll need to remove the bars to fit the mounts but once in place they are flush and completely secure.

Performance

The first thing you'll need to deal with is setting up the Bontrager RSL Blendr stem in a way that makes sense for you. You can run it with no mounts installed and no one would think something is missing. That's not really the point though so you'll want to think about what makes sense.

It is actually possible to snap the Blendr mounts onto the bars without removing them. You can't fit the tabs into the pockets that secure them though and the mounts aren't secure like this. That means if you want to make a configuration change you've got to remove the bars. Not a huge deal but it will mean getting out your torque wrench and getting the angle of the bars just right again.

This is further complicated by the fact that you have to choose between a double and single base mount. In the box you only get the mono base but if you'd like to mount two accessories, you'll need the duo base. That means if you want both a light and a computer at the same time, or a computer and a camera is another possibility, then you'll need to make another purchase.

Once you've made a choice of base everything from that point bolts on without much trouble. You'll have a Garmin high mount and an ion mount on hand without any extra purchases. There are some details about those pieces though. The Ion mount is too short to work with the Ion Pro RT so expect to use that with the Ion 200 RT. Meanwhile, the Garmin mount will put the computer up above the bars and there is no Wahoo mount available. If you want to keep the computer in front of the bars you can flip the base so the mount is lower but that only works for a single accessory and won't fit a 1030 series Garmin. If you want to run Wahoo you'll want to either pick up the Garmin mount adapter from them or look for a third-party Blendr mount.

Bontrager RSL Blendr Stem detail of tightening bolt

For most people this dance of figuring out how to make things work isn't going to be an ongoing problem. It's rare to switch computers and if you think through how things are going to fit before torquing down the bars you'll find something that works. It does pose a problem for occasional use of a light though. You'd need the Duo base to run a light but many people only sometimes run a light. In that scenario adding a light would require removing the handlebars or leaving the Duo installed and ruining the clean look you were after.

Assuming you find the setup that works for your needs though, it does work. The first ride I took it on took me on a 27-mile road ride before getting to the gravel. The road offers the possibility of small but high frequency vibration. Although the larger tyres I was running certainly helped, there was no issue with a vibrating computer. As I took to the gravel trail things remained steady but that wasn't the real test.

The real test was not expected. The gravel loop was 44 miles and a good portion of that was relatively smooth. That was all expected but as I climbed, I eventually turned off onto a logging road. I continued to climb and this is when the weather changed. When it began to snow I was under dressed and things got scary for a little while. For the next thirteen miles I descended on rough logging roads as quickly as I could.

There was no careful picking of lines. Instead, crashing through big cuts and holes in the road was how things went. My dexterity was low and I wasn't thinking clearly plus I was moving faster than I should have been. More than once I wondered if I'd damaged a wheel but through it all my computer was rock solid. It never drooped and certainly never fell. If the Blendr mount survived that, it'll survive anything.

Bontrager RSL Blendr Stem close up view of mount

The way that Bontrager implements its mount isn't the best solution. The Enve carbon stem is a product with a similar concept but it uses a single mount and connects it to an aluminium K-edge computer mount. The K-edge mount means the computer is down low, there's tons of adapters available, and there's a GoPro mount underneath for lights or cameras. You don't have to remove the bars if you don't want to run a light and also keep everything looking clean and tidy.

That consideration might be a secondary thought though. A carbon stem is already an emotional purchase and the Bontrager RSL stem is beautiful. If you'd like to stick with Bontrager to match your bike, or your handlebars, then you aren't losing out. It just might mean you have to work a little harder to find the configuration that works for you.

FIRST LOOK: BONTRAGER AEOLUS RSL WHEELS

trek rsl stuur

Bontrager, Trek’s in-house component brand, is known for their quality and high-performing products. While Bontrager produces high-performing, high-cost wheelsets, they apply much of the same technology of their highest-end wheelsets to their more affordable products as well.

The Aeolus RSL series is Bontrager’s top-tier performance-oriented carbon wheelsets. They are available in disc brake options and in 4 depths—37mm and  more aerodynamic 51mm, 62mm and 74mm profiles.

Press release:

Bontrager introduced the all-new line of Aeolus RSL wheels today, expanding its performance wheel offering and setting a new benchmark for speed and stability in carbon wheels. Bontrager’s Aeolus RSL wheels are the result of a completely reimagined design process. In the past, Bontrager’s optimization process was done in 2D. For Aeolus RSL, Bontrager enabled 3D CFD models, which allowed engineers to accurately account for every gram of drag, in every direction, through every plane and across all aspects of the wheel/tire system.

A third dimension in speed

With this new approach, Bontrager was better able to replicate real-world conditions and adjust the design accordingly, optimizing for aerodynamics as well as rolling resistance. The result is a wheel that moves way beyond marginal gains. Aeolus RSL wheels aren’t just fast; they’re the fastest wheels Bontrager has ever made. Off-the- charts faster Aeolus RSL wheels are significantly faster than all previous Aeolus models, and the speed gains don’t come at the cost of stability.

Wider is faster

Aeolus RSL’s 23 mm inner width (21 mm on Aeolus RSL 37) provides a better aerodynamic connection with tires and allows them to roll faster. This design also lets you run lower tire pressures for a smoother, faster and less- fatiguing ride.

Race-caliber carbon

All Aeolus RSL wheels are built with RSL-level OCLV Carbon. It’s the lightest and strongest available, and the key to creating our fastest rim shapes ever.

Designed with the pros

To create a wheel set worthy of the Race Shop Limited (RSL) name, our engineers turned to Trek-Segafredo. The team’s feedback helped us create the ultimate race wheel set, one thatadds speed and confidence to every ride.

Faster with fewer watts

Aerodynamically faster rim shapes and a wheel/tyre profile proven to reduce rolling resistance add up to major watt-savings. For a rider like Trek-Segafredo’s Mads Pedersen, Aeolus RSL can save 34 watts in a sprint finish over previous Aeolus wheels of a similar depth.

New lightweight internals

Aeolus RSL wheels feature all-new lighter-weight Ratchet EXP freehubs built with proven DT Swiss 240s internals for consistent engagement and a smooth, fast-rolling feel.

trek rsl stuur

Tubeless Ready (TLR)

Easily set up your wheel set tubeless with Bontrager TLR rim strips or use a rim tape system for the lightest set – up possible. Move over, tubulars! This is the fastest wheel and tire system available, and it’s exactly what ’s raced by Trek Factory Racing to give them an edge over the competition.

Confidence in carbon

Like all Bontrager carbon wheels, Aeolus RSL wheels are backed by Carbon Care Wheel Loyalty Program. In the unlikely event that you damage your Bontrager carbon wheels within the first two years of ownership, we’ll repair or replace them for free.

Available Aeolus RSL wheel models

Aeolus RSL is available in multiple depths (37 mm, 51 mm, 62 mm and 75 mm), each designed to meet the demands of a specific kind of ride.

Aeolus RSL 37: An ultralight 37 mm rim profile for climbing performance and more speed in sprints.

Aeolus RSL 51: A versatile 51 mm rim profile for unmatched speed and stability across all conditions.

Aeolus RSL 62: A deep 62 mm rim profile perfectly suited to sprinters and those who prioritise speed on every ride.

Aeolus RSL 74: A 75 mm depth for triathlon and time trial riders, best for all-out efforts and your fastest bike splits ever.

Bontrager’s new Aeolus RSL wheels are available immediately online at trekbikes.com in select markets and through Trek’s global network of retail partners

Upgrade your cockpit and enjoy a tidier setup with the Bontrager Aeolus RSL VR-C Integrated Bar/Stem Aero Handlebar . The weight saving benefits of opting for a single carbon component over a bar and stem combination are obvious, but it's the aerodynamic gains that really make the upgrade worthwhile.

With a lightweight OCLV carbon fibre construction, Bontrager has created a compliant but seriously stiff cockpit that absorbs chatter and makes sprinting in the drops even more efficient. In the wind tunnel, this cockpit is 10% faster than it's predecessor, saving seven watts which could be the difference in besting your 10-mile TT or not. The neat look is boosted by integrated cable management which keeps your cables and hoses neatly out of the way, while the broad, ergonomic tops feel great in-hand. The included Blendr mount allows you to install a Garmin bike computer and Bontrager Ion light (both sold separately).

  • OCLV Carbon construction is ultra-light, compliant and durable
  • Integrated bar/stem design improves aerodynamics and saves weight

It seems like every recent product launch in the cycling world focuses on one word, comfort. More and more everything from bikes to wheels to tires is all about keeping the rider comfortable first. The idea is that no one is all that fast when contorted and uncomfortable.

Of course that seems obvious when you say it, or read it in this case, but it’s not always been something the cycling world takes into account. Road cycling in particular has a reputation for the glorification of suffering and, in the past, fast meant uncomfortable. That’s shifting though, and there’s momentum building as time goes on. New products recognize that it takes energy to be uncomfortable and when a brand can mitigate that, we can ride faster.

Shoes are just one of those categories focusing on comfort now and every new shoe launch seems to also mention a wider last. Among those launches, Trek released the RSL Knit shoe in February. The Trek RSL Knit is a shoe that stands out even in a sea of shoe launches and I’ve been lucky enough to spend time in them since launch.

At first that meant a lot of rainy days riding and racing on Zwift and TrainerRoad but as the seasons have shifted, I’ve also had a chance to spend considerable outdoor miles in them. With that background, I’m ready to discuss the details of the Trek RSL Knit shoe. If you are looking for a new pair of road shoes, Trek might have the right option for you but there are things to consider.

Quick hits: Six things to know about the Trek RSL Knit shoes

  • Insoles use a bio based foam made with Rise by BLOOM
  • OCLV carbon sole is a 14 out of 14 on the Trek scale
  • The Trek RSL, launched alongside the Knit version, uses the same base
  • BOA Li2 dials mount to a non-stretch material covering a knit upper
  • The knit upper allows your foot to swell without pain
  • The new Trek Pro Last is wider than before

Trek RSL Knit Details

In February of this year, Trek launched a trio of shoes and the Trek RSL Knit was among them. The stated goal of all the shoes was to update a four year old design which sold under the Bontrager name. The update wasn’t just in name alone though.

It started from the base with a new last designed to fit a wider range of real world foot shapes. Mostly that means wider with a stubbier toe box and it’s something other brands are also doing. Specialized is the most notable in that group but Trek adds a secondary technology called MetNet into the mix to further enhance fit.

MetNet means different things in different shoes but the basic idea is to create a low structure area around the first and fifth metatarsal. In the Trek RSL shoe that looks like a series of punched out three-pointed shapes that create stretch in a material that doesn’t stretch. The RSL Knit version takes things in a totally different direction.

Instead of using an upper without stretch, the RSL Knit has an upper closer to a sock than a shoe. There’s no opening down the center and no structure of any kind. From the back of the arch all the way to the toe you’ll find a thick knit fabric in either white or black.

Actually, it’s not totally fair to say there’s no structure. There’s no traditional shoe structure but Trek uses a sophisticated pattern of varying knit patterns to change the way the upper stretches. At the top, where a traditional tongue would be, there’s a tight knit with very little stretch and that spreads along the top before giving way to two different knit patterns below it. In the center of the shoe you first encounter a pattern that allows lots of stretch vertically but not horizontally then a wide open pattern that offers the lowest structure. The low-structure pattern is also what Trek uses in the MetNet areas of the RSL Knit. Among all this low structure knitting there’s a second layer at play as well.

Overhead view of the Trek RSL Knit

The second layer of the Trek RSL knit is what actually creates the shoe. At the front of the toe you’ll find a bit of hard plastic that protects against toe rub. That’s not the interesting part though. Instead you’ll find the unique secondary structure first shows up surrounding the all-important first and fifth metatarsal. Instead of allowing expansion, the RSL Knit merely surrounds the area with narrow strips of non-stretch synthetic suede. The MetNet area remains wide open in the layer below but the suede forms a triangular structure on the outside of the foot where a BOA Li2 dial mounts at the peak.

The BOA Li2 dial is important in its own right as it’s the best dial that BOA manufacturers. It occupies that slot because it’s got the most granular adjustment in both directions plus it’s pop-to-release. More recently we’ve also seen it occasionally show up in high-end shoes with a metal dial and in this instance Trek offers either silver in the white shoe or gold in the black shoe. Also somewhat unique to the Trek shoe is that instead of a cable, the brand is using the more forgiving fabric rope attachment along with, again, more forgiving fabric loops where it anchors on the other side.

The Trek RSL Knit is a two BOA dial shoe and the second one has a different set of anchoring straps farther up the shoe. Instead of a semi triangle and a kind of half oval anchoring to either side of the carbon base, the upper uses something more like a rectangle to tie into not only the base but also the heel cup.

Trek RSL Knit rear view showing the heel cup

Unlike the rest of the shoe, the heel cup is a structured and mostly rigid design. The previous Bontrager XXX , as well as the current Trek RSL and a variety of other brands, use a hard plastic shell in this location. The RSL Knit isn’t quite that stiff but it does hold its own and stands up. On the white shoe it’s also a contrasting light gray and on both colors the interior is a shark skin (or cat tongue if you prefer) style fabric that your sock will slide into but struggles to slide out of.

Underpinning all of this is a carbon base that Trek deems the stiffest the brand makes. Again similar to Specialized, there is a central area with steps and an edge that runs along the sides. This creates a stiffer sole and it also helps limit pooling of the epoxy and, by extension, keeps the weight down. At either end of the carbon is a non-replaceable traction pad and there’s a pair of vents both in the forefront and mid foot. What’s perhaps the most unusual feature of the RSL Knit base is that it’s painted either silver or gold depending on the color of the upper.

Also underpinning your foot, is the insole. It’s not something I spent a lot of time with, as discussed below, but it is worth mentioning because Trek has gone above and beyond to try and add some sustainability with the included insole. Both the RSL Knit and standard RSL come with a new insole design using Rise by Bloom instead of traditional foam. What’s different is that while typically an insole would use petroleum based foam, the Rise system instead harvests freshwater algae overgrowth. The harvested biomass is then combined with bio-based additives to create a foam replacement. The process removes an unwanted material from lake shores, thereby sequestering CO2, and returns filtered water.

Trek RSL Knit in use

As a tech reviewer, I’ve definitely explored more shoes than most. There are times I leave my house with a different pair of shoes for each of the five rides I typically do in a week. Over the years what I’ve found is that the first thing I must have is the ability for my foot to swell and remain comfortable.

I don’t have an especially wide foot. In fact, I’d say it’s rather narrow. On short rides, up to maybe four hours, I can be totally comfortable in super narrow shoes like the Giro Empire. After that though, things get more difficult. Those same Giro shoes started to hurt so bad after somewhere around 11-hours that I had to take them off and walk for a few minutes.

The Trek RSL Knit completely changes the game when it comes to long rides and swelling feet and it’s due to a dual nature. On one hand, the amount of compression and support they still have is quite impressive. If I tighten down that front BOA dial my foot doesn’t move even a little. It will also restrict swelling enough that I’ll start to get pins and needles and pain. What’s unique is that when that happens, all I have to do is turn the BOA dial a couple of clicks.

Detail of the metal BOA Li2 on the Trek RSL Knit

Any BOA shoe allows that to some extent but the RSL Knit is different. Typically the front BOA isn’t doing a whole lot. You can loosen it or tighten it and it won’t drastically change the feel of the shoe as long as you leave the upper adjustment alone. With the RSL Knit the front BOA has the ability to completely change the fit of the shoe. If I want a cranked down and highly compressive fit, it’s there. At the same time, you can also loosen it up for a fit more like a slipper. While there are other shoes with a highly locked in fit, and other shoes that fit like a slipper, there are few that offer both.

Perhaps as interesting as that dual nature is the way your foot stays connected to the base no matter how you have the shoes adjusted. The knit sock-like upper has enough soft compression on its own that your foot will never slide around. Everything comes together leaving you with a shoe that allows both an ultra-tight fit and loose fit but, no matter the adjustment, your foot never slides in the shoe. It’s a unique combination.

Adding to that feeling is something I adjusted based on my own needs. As I mentioned above, I didn’t spend a lot of time with the included insole. Over the years I’ve learned not only do I have to manage swelling but I’ve got low volume feet with collapsed arches and I do best with an insole. Trek does offer BioDynamic insoles to address that need, and they now use 70% recycled material, but I ended up reaching for the Elastic Interface WattD200 . I’ve found it does a great job sucking up the volume in a shoe but I also love how soft it is. In this case it’s a perfect match to the supported and almost hugged feeling the Trek upper provides. It’s also specifically designed for ultra-distance riding so it happens to be a perfect match for me in a number of ways. Keep an eye on it for future availability.

Inside view of the Trek RSL Knit heel cup

The truth is I could rave all day about how much I love the Trek RSL Knit. There’s only a handful of shoes I can think of that work as well for me. The Nimbl Feat ultimate is just as wide and comfortable and the low structure design of the Fizik Vento Powerstrap R2 Aeroweave is a favorite as well. The shoe I’m reminded of the most though is the Specialized S-Works Ares . Both the Ares and the RSL Knit do an incredibly good job of keeping your foot in place while also allowing room for swelling. The only reason I find myself not reaching for the Ares as much is that I’m less in love with the big S-Works text across it. That said, the Specialized does do one thing better.

The Ares is a slightly different shoe and you can feel it. That shoe is specifically designed with the needs of a sprinter in mind and there’s more pressure than the Trek RSL Knit. Despite that, I still wish the RSL Knit was as indestructible as the Ares.

Trek RSL Knit opposite the Specialized S-Works Ares

Anyone who wears a white shoe has to know what they are buying into. You have to be ready to be at least a little neurotic to keep it clean. Unfortunately the RSL Knit is another level beyond that. You can’t wash it because of all the suede and there’s no possibility of getting even minor spots out of the knit upper.

When I asked, Trek recommended a toothbrush. If that worked I’d probably say that was the cost of doing business. It doesn’t work though. I went through a wet spot on the tarmac the first outdoor ride and now my shoes have spots. Not a puddle, just wet pavement. There’s also spots from the sealant when I got a flat and if you think a normal carbon base shows marks, try a painted one. I wish I’d chosen black but I also wish there was a black and silver option.

showing dirt on the Trek RSL Knit

The price probably also has to come into the discussion here. The Trek RSL Knit is one of the best shoes I’ve ever used so I’m not surprised it’s expensive. The only problem is that it brings the inability to keep them looking nice right to the center. This is not a shoe you want looking bad after a single season.

For now, the Trek RSL Knit is going to keep being my go to shoe because of the comfort and performance. I just wonder how long before they look so trashed I find myself reaching for a different shoe? Hopefully before then I find a way to clean them.

Home » Reviews » TREK RSL ROAD CYCLING SHOE – PASSING THE TORCH

trek rsl stuur

How does the Trek RSL Road Cycling Shoe, a new model with a new name, compare to the company’s outgoing Bontrager XXX and other top road racing shoes?

Branding the shoe a Trek instead of a Bontrager, one of the company’s divisions, and the model RSL, the acronym for Race Shop Limited, instead of XXX, an acronym or descriptor I never understood, suggests the Trek RSL Road is a clean break from the past.

Functionally and aesthetically, however, it’s more of a passing of the torch from one shoe generation to the next.

What Trek accomplished with the Bontrager XXX – performance and comfort at the highest levels – and its price – also at the highest levels – are exceeded with the Trek RSL.

In its approach to fit, the Trek RSL Road also sur passes another torch, specifically the Specialized S-Works Torch road cycling shoes, with several of its fit and comfort characteristics

Some of this passing may or may not be right for you and your feet. Other parts, such as the Trek RSL’s US$450, £349, and €400 price tag, may make you want to pass on this shoe or just make you pass out.

TREK RSL GOES BIG UPFRONT

Fit is the most noticeable difference between the Trek RSL Road and its predecessor and competitors.

First, it runs a half size larger than the Bontrager XXX and Specialized S-Works Torch, which are already larger volume shoes in the toe box, across the forefoot, and in the heel cup than most.

While my fellow tester Nate and I both wear size EU 43 road and mountain bike shoes, his feet are a few mm shorter and narrower than mine. But he likes roomier shoes, and the S-Works Torch best suits him.

I want a more closely fitting forefoot and heel cup yet ample toe box room in my shoes. I prefer the Shimano S-Phyre RC 903 and love the sock-like fit of the Trek RSL Knit shoes. The latter share the same “last” or mechanical form as the RSL Road that’s used to mold the outsoles of both shoes.

After initially trying the Trek RSL Road (and RSL Knit) shoes in EU 43, I replaced them with the EU 42.5 that Nate and I tested. Their length is more like wearing the EU 43 in the Bontrager XXX, Specialized S-Works Torch, and almost every other shoe we’ve tested though their width is still more than ample.

If your feet run wide, tend to swell during a ride, have bunions or other irregularities that make them hard to fit in most road cycling shoes, or you just like the feel of a lot of room, the Trek RSL Road, a half size smaller than what you usually wear, will be ideal for you.

trek rsl stuur

Even then, this shoe has more toe box room than any of the dozen current top-of-the-line road bike shoes we’ve tested . From the balls of your feet back through your mid-foot, the sides of the shoes are made of stretchy material Trek calls METNET (short for metatarsal netting) that expands to accommodate wide feet or irregular parts of your feet.

If you have narrow feet or size your shoes based on a long second toe, the Trek RSL Road toe box will likely be too wide.

PLENTY OF DESIGN AND MECHANICAL INTERPLAY

In addition to being wider, the front of the shoe is also more rectangular or less tapered than the Torch, which already has one of the wider toe boxes of the many shoes we’ve tested. The RSL’s lower BOA lacing goes through a guide across the forefoot and another across the balls of your feet that together allow you to dial in the width to your liking. By contrast, the Torch has one guide that runs the lace only across your forefoot area, while the Shimano RC903 has a third set of guides across the toe box in addition to the two above it.

trek rsl stuur

Lower laces and guides on Trek RSL Road (center) vs, Specialized Torch (left) and Shimano RC903 (left)

Nate cranked down the RSL’s lower dial tightly without any short-term discomfort though he did experience some fore-aft sliding with the front tips of his toes coming into contact with the rigid inside of the front toe cap. On the Torch, the top and front of the toe cap material are more flexible, and any contact there is less noticeable.

I could never tighten the RSL Road’s bottom BOA enough to feel like my toes weren’t totally free and that my forefoot was snug.

Similar to most road shoes these days, you’ll need aftermarket footbeds to improve the RSL’s fit and comfort. They’re as flat as any shoes we’ve tested, and the insoles that come with them don’t add any arch support we could discern.

COOL, WELL-PLACED, AND MICRO-ADJUSTING COMFORT

The Trek RSL’s comfort is one of its strongest assets. Nate and I each praised the shoe’s ventilation coming through the many pinhole perforations in the tongue, above the toes, and across METNET that runs down the sides of the synthetic upper material. The bottom sole also has two cutouts below the toes and a couple more below the arch, far more in number and area than you see on other top-tier road shoes.

trek rsl stuur

Plenty of ventilation under your toes and arches

Trek also uses the best BOA closure system available in this model. The dials and guides are placed to enable micro-adjustments without creating hotspots. Unlike the Torch, which requires you to unwind the dials to fully release the lace tension, you simply pull up on the RSL dial to accomplish the same result.

For those who like the comfort of extra toe box room and a shoe that adapts to your unique midfoot area and toes without trial and error customization, these puppies will be a happy place for your feet.

STIFF POWER TRANSFER FOR ALL BUT THE MOST PRECISE STROKE

The Trek RSL’s outsole is about as stiff as one could be, similar to others we rank for top-level power efficiency. However, with the BOA tension adjusted a click or two less than where it becomes uncomfortably tight, Nate got slightly more fore/aft slip of his feet than his Torch shoes.

This could be due to the roomier toe box and forefoot width or the expandable METNET side panels, and it could be an issue for riders who look to get a bit more power by consciously kicking their foot forward across the top of their pedal stroke.

Offsetting this potential movement is a heel cup whose shape closely follows the heel’s varying width from bottom to top and is lined with material that provides enough friction to keep your heel from easily rising. Bottom line: Your heel doesn’t move laterally or vertically throughout the pedal stroke.

AN ENLARGED LOOK ON TRADITION

The Trek RSL Road Cycling Shoe has a traditional center tongue that’s free on both sides. The toe area is broader and more squared-off than most. At the same time, the METNET cutouts are bigger than typical ventilation pinholes, defining the upper’s look, especially on the white version.

trek rsl stuur

Pinhole vs. METNET perforations and heel bumpers with cutout and subtle Trek branding on upper shoe

Like the XXX that preceded it, the RSL has a plastic bumper protecting the rear of the heel with cutouts in their sides, perhaps to save weight. The Trek branding is subtle, appearing in black on one side of the black bumpers.

In keeping with tradition and Trek’s communicated plan to reduce the number of product variations it will produce, the shoe is only available in white and black, likely the most popular colors.

WHO THE TREK RSL ROAD IS BEST FOR

Each shoe that we rate among the best for its comfort and power transfer efficiency is a good option to choose between. They differ principally in their fit and styling.

If you like more room and adaptability for your feet up front, a locked-in heel across a stiff outsole, a highly ventilated upper, and a well-engineered closure system, the Trek RSL Road Cycling Shoe is your best option.

Great review , Im on the fence between the RSL or the RSL knitted, RSL are on special at my local bike shop(100$ off). If you had to choose one pair between the 2 of them witch one would you go with ? I only buy 1 pair of cycling shoes every 5 years .Im currently riding the sworks 7 and they started suddenly hurting my small toe the pass 2 seasons. Thanks Stefano

RSL Knit. My review here. https://intheknowcycling.com/trek-rsl-knit-review/

Thanks for the reply, I have already read your review of the Knit version , in your opinion are they far more superior and a lot more comfortable ? and for longevity would you go with the RSLs

Stefano, They are both very comfortable but they fit differently. The RSL Knit shapes to your foot like a sock whereas the RSL Road leaves plenty of room in the toe box and forefoot for you feet to relax. The RSL Road also has has expandable areas for unique metatarsal shapes. The RSL Knit in white is hard to keep clean but both shoes have worn well during our testing. You may have seen this, but there’s are charts comparing them and others in this review. https://intheknowcycling.com/road-cycling-shoes/#Recommendations . Steve

trek rsl stuur

trek rsl stuur

trek rsl stuur

Aeolus PRO(実測175g)から25.5gの軽量化になりました(笑)

trek rsl stuur

快適になって、軽量化も出来ましたので今回の新機材投入は大成功でした!!

La tercera generación Trek Procaliber ya es una realidad.
