With long summer months and sunshine almost all year round, water sports in Malta and other fun outdoor activities are a great option to enjoy your holiday to the full.

Despite some activities being seasonal, there’s always something on offer twelve months of the year.

So if you’re wondering what to do in Malta : It’s an ideal place to try out something new and the hiring of equipment is commonly available as well.

Here are some of the best water sports in Malta and other outdoor activities you can do while holidaying in Malta.

Water Sports in Malta

Scuba diving.

If there’s one water sport that Malta is really known for worldwide, it’s scuba diving. Malta continuously gets top ratings from divers looking to explore some of the most beautiful underwater locations in the Mediterranean.

Dive sites are numerous and suit several tastes. With Malta playing a pivotal role during WW2, means that the Mediterranean waters surrounding the island offer wrecks in the forms of both ships and aircraft in remarkable condition.

Caverns offer a close-up glimpse of sea life and underwater nature, while rock formations provide caves and tunnels all at varying depths. Discover a new world from just a few metres down and experience a different side to Malta which is out of this world.

More info (including dive sites and dive centre listings) here:  Scuba diving in Malta

Snorkelling

The best time for snorkelling around the islands of Malta is between May and August when sea temperatures are at their best, outside of these months you will probably find a wetsuit is required.

From a mild 19C in May rising to 27C in August, the waters are not only warm but crystal clear and make for perfect underwater sightseeing. Although beautiful, the sandy beaches across the island can become overcrowded during peak season, so if snorkelling is your main priority, head for the rocky beaches such as Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq, Coral Lagoon, Għar Lapsi and Fomm ir-Riħ to experience an abundance of sea life and natural formations.

Very basic snorkelling equipment can be bought from most souvenir shops but hiring equipment is also possible from dive centres.

More info (including sites and equipment hire) here:  Snorkelling in Malta and Gozo

Did you know you can take a jet ski safari to explore the crystal blue waters of the Mediterranean not only in Malta but also in the sister islands of Gozo and Comino?

Visiting both historical and geographical places of interest. With sunset safaris, round Malta safaris and the west coast, to name a few, you can visit caves and caverns only accessible by sea. Fully led by a group instructor adventurous explorers won’t be disappointed.

Get more info and tickets here .

For one of the best kayaking experiences, head to Malta’s sister island of Gozo.  Kayak Gozo was set up by a couple who after travelling the world, set up shop in Gozo and put their hearts and souls into launching their ever-popular business.

With everything you need available, their guided tours suit all tastes and levels ranging from novices to the experienced. Tours include ‘Rise and Shine’, ‘Siesta Paddle’, ‘Day Trippin’ and ‘Gozo Special’ and make for some great photo opportunities too, which the experienced team are only too happy to provide.

Contact Kayak Gozo at [email protected] complete a queries form on their website, or give them a call at +356 9900 4696.

Banana Rides

Għadira Bay has one of the largest and most popular sandy beaches on the island, so water sports are always popular.

Oh Yeah Watersports and Cruises located at the bay offer everything from paragliding to day-long boat trips. For those looking for fun that will have you laughing so much, holding on will be a challenge, try out a banana boat ride. Allowing up to seven people at a time to take part, makes the prices very reasonable if the full seven participate.

For more information about the banana rides and the other watersports provided at Għadira Bay by Oh Yeah either give them a call or pay them a visit while visiting the bay.

Oh Yeah Watersports and Cruises, Tunny Net Complex, Għadira Bay, Malta +356 2152 3258

Not surprisingly, boat trips across Malta are plentiful. Hire a boat for private use or join in on a cruise, the choice is yours.

If you are more for an organised trip with set locations, selected departure points and times, cruises are the best choice, but for more intimacy and no set agenda, hiring different sized self-drive boats to cater for your needs is just as accessible.

Here are a few options to consider:

  • Mysteries of the Grand Harbour  takes you on a tour of Malta’s largest natural harbours on either side of Valletta, Malta’s capital city.
  • You can take  this full-day 3-island sailing trip  to see some of the best scenes and bays around Malta, Gozo and Comino with several stops along the way to enjoy a swim in the crystal clear waters (weather permitting)
  • Here’s another option for a full-day boat trip that focuses mostly on Gozo and Comino and where you’ll be sailing on a catamaran:  Spirit of Malta Adventure .
  • Ever heard of Malta’s Blue Lagoon? It’s one of the most beautiful bays in Malta (at Comino, to be specific) and a must-visit spot. The only downside is that it gets super busy there in summer, but taking  this boat tour to Comino and the Blue Lagoon itself  is a great option to use the boat as a place to leave your stuff and get some shade, food and drink when you need them.

Windsurfing

If you don’t know how to already, there are water sports companies in Malta offering to teach complete beginners to be sufficient at windsurfing in as little time as a weekend. Wind surfs are available for rental and if a weekend of learning doesn’t take your fancy, taster sessions can be booked too.

Described as one of the most idyllic water sports locations on the island,  Mellieħa Bay , has plenty to offer. One such business offering all your windsurfing needs are Hangloose Paddle ‘n’ Surf. If you’re a little unsure as to what to expect, they welcome you to contact them for a friendly chat and advice. “Chatting is their second favourite hobby”.

Outdoor Activities in Malta

Multimaxx Malta offers several activities including virtual games and arcade experiences. Outdoor Laser Tag sees the enjoyment of competing to complete missions (like paintball, but without the injuries!).

Using high tech equipment complete challenges by joining a team of players or visiting with your own team. Action-packed adventure on their battlefield guarantees not only fun and adventure but is also great for team building and improving your strategic skills. Laser Tag takes place in the form of a whole day event so booking is essential. Available for almost all the year, the games can take up to 20 players at a time.

Recommended provider:  Bay Street Complex, Level 4, San Ġiljan, Malta +356 9917 7777

For the ultimate in karting in Malta, Badger Karting is the place to go. Established for nearly 20 years, today the location boasts 17 different tracks with varying difficulty and 30 petrol-powered karts to steer around the twists and bends reaching an adrenaline rushing 80km/h.

With a clubhouse for refreshments and a rooftop viewing gallery, those who prefer not to participate are always welcome to watch. Open from early evening to late Tuesday to Friday and from midday to late at the weekends and holidays, Badger Karting is open all year round but weather dependent.

Recommended provider:  Badger Karting, Triq Duramblatt, L/O Mosta, Ta’ Qali, Malta Mosta + 356 2142 1838

For modern-day archery, take up a bow and arrow and commence battle (with a foam-tipped arrow of course). Arrow tag will supply all the equipment and the only safety gear you need in the form of goggles or head masks required as this sport is virtually pain-free. Ideal for groups and played in a dedicated field, the games provide plenty of places to take cover and plan your surprise attacks. Again, available all year round, this fast-paced game is probably more enjoyed in the cooler months rather than in the heat of the Maltese summer.

Recommended provider: Arrow Tag Malta is based in Sliema, all bookings and queries are taken through  their website .

Malta & Gozo guide book Valletta : An Insider’s Guide to Malta’s Capital

Take the hassle out of planning your trip to Malta and be an informed traveller!

An adventurous way to escape Malta’s summer heat is to take part in a spot of spelunking.

Malta offers some spectacular caves to caves to explore ranging from stunning coves to eerie burial chambers and an awful lot in between. Some of the most interesting places to look into across Malta and Gozo are Għar Dalam, Ninu’s Cave, Xerri’s Grotto, The  Blue Grotto seacave  and Għar Lapsi.

It’s better if you have your own equipment, however, MC Adventure does hire out all the safety equipment you may need for an adventure of hidden Mediterranean beauty.

Recommended provider:  MC Adventure, Media Consulta House, 150 Salvu Psaila Street, Birkirkara, Malta +356 2206 0106

With breathtaking locations across Malta and Gozo, abseiling on the island is an extreme sport that can be enjoyed by both novices and the experienced due to the many formations island-wide.

MC Adventure again offers full supervision from their experienced team along with the full quota of safety equipment required. Abseiling tends to take place more in the spring and winter months and MC Adventure offers the locations of Ghar Lapsi, Mosta Valley and Dwejra .

Mountain Biking

The cragged remote places ideal for off-road biking in Malta are plentiful. The islands have a range of routes allowing you to see some of the best sights of the island along the way. Malta can’t supply the mountains but can certainly provide challenging terrains and trails to be remembered.

The Mġarr hills provide both countryside and sea views in both east and west directions, the coast road has a dedicated cycle lane and accompanying fresh sea breeze. For a lengthy but more leisurely route of approximately 40km, use  St. Paul’s Bay  as a starting point and head through Qawra, Pembroke and on to  Valletta  where you can take a rest and relish in the sights and amenities of the capital city.

Other routes to look out for are Tarxien outskirts, Xemxija to  Għajn Tuffieħa , Mellieħa hills, and the Victoria Lines. For bike hire, contact Eco Bikes who not only hire out a range of bicycles but also have their own tours to join in.

A trip to Valletta could quite possibly be on your ‘to-do’ list, but how about seeing the history of the capital city from a 300-metre zip line? Under the instruction of qualified staff and safely harnessed in, take a stride from the top of the bastions and enjoy adrenaline-filled views of the Great Siege Bell and Grand Harbour as you head towards the sea edge.

Along with a 150-metre zip line at Migra and the 200-metre at Mosta, these experiences are predominantly available in late summer and autumn and spring months.

Recommended provider:  MC Adventure, Media Consulta House, 150 Salvu Psaila Street, Birkirkara +356 2206 0106

Rock Climbing

Whether you are a novice or well experienced, if climbing takes your fancy, Malta offers some amazing locations. Inland valley crags, sea cliffs and tranquil, off the beaten track sites are spread across the island. With predominantly dry weather during the winter and plenty of shaded opportunities during the summer, climbing opportunities can take place all year round.

Recommended provider:  Malta Rock Climbing Club (MRCC), Malta Rock Climbing Club, Media Consulta House, 150 Psaila Street, Birkirkara +356 2122 6100

Embrace your historical surroundings while visiting the Maltese archipelago and try your hand at a spot of traditional archery. Whether you are after a course or a one-off taster in a group or individually, there are a few places which offer this. Point, draw and shoot your way to a fun-filled experience set in a dedicated archery range.

Focusing on traditional ways of shooting a bow and learning about the historical aspects of archery along the way, contact Falcon Archery.

Recommended provider: Falcon Archery at University of Malta, University Ring Road, Msida +356 7773 9771.

From Malta’s capital of Valletta to the red cliffs of Mellieħa and plenty in between, Segways offer an alternative way to explore the island in groups. You can travel at your own pace it’s a great way to take in the sights while being a safe mode of transportation.

Interested? Have a look at this option:  Segway Tour in Malta

You can choose between 3 tours of around two hours each:

  • Explore Valletta by Segway
  • Take a tour of Dingli and its surrounding nature and high cliffs (don’t worry, it’s safe ? )
  • Cross country from Dingli to Laferla Cross on the outskirts of Siġġiewi – one of the highest points in Malta with beautiful views.

Jeep Safari

Open top jeep safaris give the opportunity to discover more of the Maltese islands while enjoying the fresh Mediterranean air. Stopping off at some of the island’s most picturesque places and enabling plenty of photo opportunities along the way.

Be prepared for a bumpy ride at times but this just adds to the adventure.

Here are a few good options for jeep tours. Both options are a little more comfortable as you’ll be riding in Land Rover Defender jeeps which are a little larger, offer air conditioning and also accommodate up to 6 persons.

  • Defender Malta Jeep Safari  – Take a tour of Malta, which takes you up North past Mellieha, to a few picturesque bays along the West coast, different villages including Mġarr, Mdina, Mosta, Naxxar and onto Valletta and The Three Cities.  You’ll also head to Tarxien to visit the Megalithic temples there, a stop at the Blue Grotto and a visit to Marsaxlokk, among other stops. Includes a 3-course lunch and collection/return to your place of stay.
  • Defender Gozo Jeep Safari  – By the same provider but focusing on Gozo specifically, this is a great way to explore the island in comfort and pass through the most beautiful parts with several stops along the way. Transfers, lunch and Gozo ferry tickets are included so all you have to do is show up.

Horse Riding

Perfect for sunbathing, better for swimming and great for water sports, but how about horse riding along one of Malta’s renowned beaches or taking in nature at its best from horseback? With over 30 years of experience behind them, located near the West coast of Malta, Golden Bay Horse Riding offer riding experiences to everyone from first-timers to advanced including a sunset ride with uninterrupted views. Let the wind blow through your hair and the fresh air fill your lungs.

Recommended provider:  Golden Bay Horse Riding, Għajn Tuffieħa, Mellieha +356 2157 3360.

Xlendi Underwater Archaeological park

underwater safari malta

Hidden beneath the azure waves of Xlendi Bay in Gozo lies a treasure trove of archaeological wonders, waiting to be discovered. While the Phoenician shipwreck from the 7th century BC steals the limelight, there is a wealth of other remarkable artefacts to be found. Since the late 1950s, a captivating array of cultural relics, with amphorae leading the way, has been meticulously rescued from the inlet’s depths just beneath the sentinel-like coastal watch tower that proudly stands at the entrance of Xlendi.

Various exploratory projects were conducted on this deep-water multi-period site with mixed results. In 1993, a submarine survey revealed a dense scatter of amphorae located in depths varying between 108 and 112 metres. In 2007, the extent of this archaeological deposit was mapped and recorded, revealing a rectangular zone of high archaeological value consisting of varying densities of archaeological material spread over a total area of 67,000m². Besides the visible material, the presence of archaeological remains buried in the sediment is highly likely, owing to the continuous sediment deposition from the Xlendi ria. The seabed consists of a silty sand punctuated by a series of rocky outcrops that vary in size and around which archaeological objects have accumulated.  These consist mostly of amphorae but also include urns, bowls, and other ceramic objects. The quantity of homogenous material suggests the presence of at least one shipwreck, datable to the third century BC. In 2021, Heritage Malta launched an ambitious project to record the site in high-resolution to better understand the morphology of this unique underwater archaeological site. The site was confirmed an Archaeological Zone at Sea in 2020, and in 2022 it was declared as the world’s first deep-water archaeological part. The  Xlendi Underwater Archaeological park  opens for divers in the summer of 2023. The park is sponsored by the  MIA Foundation

Welcome to the Virtual Underwater Museum

Underwater archaeological sites are out of sight and more often than not out of mind. The reason for this situation is simple – the physical barrier created by the sea itself. To date, only divers or people in submarines are able to visit such sites. Through this virtual museum you now have the opportunity to explore these historic time capsules.

Advances in technology provide this astounding opportunity to explore the underwater world without getting wet! The use of powerful cameras and special underwater lights enable us to capture Malta’s underwater cultural heritage in such a way as to make it accessible to everyone, whilst also allowing the public to dive into history. The creation of this digital record contributes to the continued effort for the preservation and protection of Malta’s submerged cultural heritage for future generations.

Who is the Safari for ?

Our spearfishing safaris are for spearfishermen and spearfishingwomen of all levels interested in spending a relaxed day spearfishing with an experienced freediving and spearfishing instructor. They are also an opportunity to see how a spearfishing excursion should be conducted from a strategy, sustainability, and safety point of view.

All our spearfishing courses and activities aim at certified freedivers. Due to efficiency and safety concerns, it is important that the spearfisher masters basic freediving techniques. The best way for us to verify this information is through a freediving certification.

underwater safari malta

What to expect from a Safari ?

The ultimate goal of our spearfishing safaris is for everyone to have a great time: learn new techniques, enjoy nature, do some sport, try new equipment, explore amazing spots and discover Malta from another point of view. A spearfishing safari is one of the best opportunities to enjoy the beautiful Maltese waters and coastline.

Catch some fish would be obviously the icing on the cake. Although its always nice to go home with some fish, we will not shoot at every fish crossing our path but will adhere to sustainable spearfishing, being selective regarding species and sizes.

How is a typical Spearfishing Safari?

We will start this amazing adventure at our center in Mellieha, where we will have a small chat about your experience and expectations. We will have a small informative session about our target species, minimum sizes of fish, and Maltese regulations for you to have all the important information clear from the very beginning.

We will then prepare the spearfishing equipment and will drive to the best fishing grounds of the islands. We will decide the fishing spot according to your level, expectations, goals, and preferences. This decision will also rely on the sea conditions on the day. If you don’t have spearfishing gear, or couldn’t travel with it, no worries as we have everything you need.

Before entering the water, we will brief you on the dive site, the most rewarding spearfishing techniques, and the best strategies to follow. We will make sure you have all the equipment needed and that all is in order.

Your guide, who is also a freediving instructor, will always be by your side. He will be with you underwater and the surface to provide you with guidance such as the best access routes, from where to approach the target species, how to dive more efficiently, how to work as a buddy team to maximize your chances, etc. The guide will also be your safety and take underwater pictures of you while you spearfish.

Expect snacks and drinks after the safari and hopefully some fish for dinner!

FAQ Spearfishing Safaris

To join our Spearfishing Safari, you are to be over 18y, have a freediving certification, and some degree of experience in spearfishing.

If you are not a certified freediver, we encourage you to check our Freediver Course (2 days) or our Wave 1 Course (3 days).

If you have never been spearfishing before but are a freediver, you will enjoy our Discover Spearfishing Course more.

We won’t ask you to prove you have experience as a spearfisher but we would not advise lying on the matter, as you won’t benefit from it. A spearfishing Safari with zero experience in spearfishing will not be enjoyable. In this instance, if you want to enjoy spearfishing, have a look at our Discover Spearfishing Course.

Note that we will ask you for a freediving certification.

Absolutely. We understand traveling with a speargun can be difficult. The rest of the equipment might be as problematic since bulky.

We have spearfishing equipment rental for 40Euros. We only rent our gear for our spearfishing courses and activities.

Our schedule is determined by the bookings we receive, following the first come first serve principle. If you would like to join a safari, let us know your preferred dates, and we will do our best to accommodate you.

This is a question we can't answer, except that you won't be disappointed! The reason why we can't answer is that our Spearfishing Safaris depend on several factors: the sea conditions, the level of the participating spearos, their expectations and preferences.

Before booking a spearfishing safari, please make you are eligible for this underwater activity. Then, all you have to do is contact us via the form below, by email, phone, WhatsApp or Messenger. Once we agree on dates, a non-refundable deposit is required to confirm your booking.

underwater safari malta

The Underwater Safari boat

Being an archipelago, Malta boasts an amazing as well as interesting marine wildlife . But in fact, the underwater world is kind of secret and unless you’re a diver or own a submarine, that’s a natural scenery you can’t really approach from very close. Well, Malta thought about it and created the first Underwater Safari excursion in the Mediterranean. Aboard this safari boat, you will explore another facet of the island and discover more about its underwater surroundings. This is the ideal solution to see the Maltese submerged world without getting wet , so grab your camera and jump in!

observation keel underwater safari malta

The observation keel on board

The Underwater Safari boat was purposely built for this matter. It includes an underwater viewing keel with large windows for people to enjoy the best views possible. Colourful fish, impressive jellyfish, occasional octopus, multicoloured seaweeds as well as breath-taking marine sights with caves and rocks, Maltese waters are full of different species you will get to spot. A fish-feeding session is also organised during the trip.

The excursion runs on many sites, known to be the best where you can encounter the Maltese aquatic wildlife. These sites include St. Paul’s Islands and Sliema ‘s popular coast. All along the trip, a marine guide will provide passengers with valuable information about the different formations and species seen. This excursion is therefore entertaining but educational as well, and one will learn loads about marine creatures and plants life in Malta.

Practical Information :

Departures : The Safari boat departs from Bugibba, Mondays to Saturdays at 11am, 1pm and 3pm during the peak season of the year (June to September). However, in April, May and October, the excursion runs at the same times but only from Mondays to Fridays. One trip lasts a bit more than 1 hour with at least 20 minutes spent in the observation area.

Price : The Underwater Safari excursion is accessible at a price of €15 per adult and €11 for children .

Public Transportation : Bugibba is a popular sea-side resort located in the north of the island. To go there, you can grab the buses N° 12 or 31 from the Capital City of Valletta, to Bognor Beach. Make sure to take the bus early enough for you to arrive on time at your appointment with the Mediterranean sea!

Captain Morgan adds a new dimension to the phrase "Visiting Malta". Now you can also see what lies beneath the sea that surrounds St. Paul's Islands from our unique purpose-built Underwater Safari Boat - the first of its kind in the Mediterranean. Captain Morgan offers a spectacular Safari to our specially selected site. This safari location has been carefully chosen to ensure maximum passenger comfort and provide optimum viewing interest.

From the observation keel you will see breath taking underwater sights - diverse species of fish darting in and out through dramatic sea-bed formations the occasional octopus languidly looking for a snack or a more comfortable cave to nap in; swaying forests of multi-hued algae and much more.

You will be gliding through and identifying the marine life that inhabits in the Maltese water - the clearest waters in the Mediterranean.

A fish feeding programme is maintained - Captain Morgan's way of saying ‘thank you' to our splendid marine life for letting us share the sea. Indeed an Underwater Safari is not only an exciting experience but an educational one as well particularly for children. Each trip is over an hour's duration and passengers have a minimum viewing time of 20 minutes in the observation keel.
