With its elegant canals and vibrant bars, the Navigli district is one of Milan’s most charming neighbourhoods . In the 15th century, Leonardo da Vinci initiated the complicated system of dams. Construction of the waterways lasted seven centuries, ultimately connecting Lakes Maggiore and Como with the Ticino and Po Rivers. Start your evening with a passeggiata (a traditional early evening stroll), before grabbing a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants lining the canals. After dinner, make like the locals, grab a cheap Aperol Spritz (or two!) from the waterside vendors and set up camp on the edge of the canal to people-watch.

More like an open-air museum than a cemetery, Cimitero Monumentale is where Milan’s leading figures and families have been buried since 1866. Milan is an absolute behemoth of a city and has the most populated metropolitan area in Italy with 1.3 million people, and 3.2 million in the wider area surrounding central Milan. Some form of human settlement has been present in the region of Milan for thousands of years and archaeological findings date back as far as 222 BC. Indeed at one point, Milan served as the capital of the Western Roman Empire.

Throughout antiquity, the middle ages, and later, Milan prospered greatly due to its commanding location in mainland Italy . Although the city was damaged during WW2 it has recovered and saw a huge economic boom that accounts for its large growth and expansion.

Today Milan offers a sublime mix of historical architecture, modern high-rise skyscrapers, all mingled together with a dash of Italian life. The city is particularly known for its abundance of high end fashion retailers and the beautiful Duomo Cathedral.

1. Milan Cathedral

Milan Cathedral is a truly monumental building and is famed for its sublime architecture and took over 600 years to complete.

Located in the centre of Milan in the self-named Piazza del Duomo, the cathedral was constructed in 1386 but not officially completed until 1965! With an Italian Gothic style, the front façade of the cathedral is truly magnificent and is crowned with countless towers, statues and decoration.

The interior is just as decorative and features some beautiful stained glass windows bursting with colour; furthermore in-between the central columns, there is a fantastic display of artwork and some finely detailed statues.

This immense structure is truly the heart of Milan and no trip to this city is complete without steeping foot inside its huge doors.

2. Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie

Although the exterior of this church is not one of the most renowned, it still has a certain charm and grace – Created in 1497, the church features a Gothic style using red bricks and a large rear basilica.

This church can be found on the Corso Magenta and sits at the opposite side of Milan to the Duomo.

Inside the building lies one of the greatest artistic masterpieces in the world – The Last Supper by Leonardo di Vinci.

Hailed as a sublime piece of artwork, this mural depicts the scene of the Last Supper as described in the Bible.

3. Grand Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

As you walk into the Grand Gallery, you might think you were stood inside the entrance hall to an opera house or palace – Not a shopping mall.

But this is essentially what the Galleria is – An extremely opulent and extravagant indoor shopping area.

Created in 1877, it stands as one of the oldest shopping malls in the world and was designed by Guiseppe Mengoni.

The cross shaped mall is covered via four glass panelled arms that let in the sunlight perfectly, whilst the walls and shop fronts are decorated with ornate panelling and stucco artwork.

High-end designer shops line the mall and you can expect to find such names as Prada, Versace and Luis Vuitton – If you are looking for a bargain, this is definitely not the place!

4. Castello Sforzesco

This 15th century castle has a central location in Milan and is set in extensive grounds and gardens.

Created in 1370, the original design has been modified and added too greatly but still retains its elegance and status of power.

At the front of the castle stands an immense brick wall lined with battlements and frame by a central guard tower.

As you walk through into the central courtyard, you will notice the large guard towers and the sheer size of the castle will amaze you.

Aside from the castle itself, there is also a host of small museums and collections that contain a myriad of interesting artefacts and historical information about the castle and Milan.

5. Pinacoteca di Brera

Located in the Palazzo Brera, the Pinacoteca is a fine Art Gallery that contains a large collection of Italian art.

In earlier years the palace served as a convent and as a national library and was not converted into a museum until the 19th century.

Inside the gallery, you can find such works as the Marriage of the Virgin by Raphael, Pieta by Bellini, the Last Supper by Rubens and the Adoration of the Magi by Correggio.

Located in close proximity to both the Sforzesco Castle and the Piazza del Duomo, the Pinacoteca di Brera is easily accessible.

6. Sant Ambrogio

This ancient building is one of the oldest in Milan and was built in 379 AD by St. Ambrose.

With a simple Romanesque design, the style of this church has not changed much since its creation and the city of Milan was built up around it, as it served as a focal point for the local population.

Two large towers frame the front façade and a central courtyard is frame via a series of ornate arches.

Due to its age, the interior of the church features some beautiful mosaics and artwork including the ceiling of the Oratory and the delightful depiction of Christ on one of the domes.

A visit to this church will provide a fine insight into the history of Milan and its religious importance.

7. Leonardo da Vinci National Museum of Science and Technology

Leonardo da Vinci was a legendary man of true genius and he was much more than an artist – He was a true visionary, and inventor and a scholar.

It stands to reason that a museum named after this man contains many of his works and a huge collection of other important scientific and technological displays.

As one of the most important museums in the world, you can expect to find such collections as a myriad of model cars created from da Vinci drawings, reconstructions of his flying machines, and a plethora of his drawings, blueprints and sketches.

Aside from works by the man himself, there is also a huge collection of important scientific inventions and pieces of breakthrough technology that changed the world.

8. Piazza dei Mercanti

Once the centre of Milan during the Middle Ages, the Piazza dei Mercanti was a true hub of activity and held many merchant activities and trade markets.

Located in-between the Piazza dei Duomo and the Piazza Corduiso, this square is within walking distance of the main sights in Milan.

Several important buildings stand in the square including the Pallaza della Ragione, the Pallaza delle Scuole Palatine and the Loggia degli Osii.

Furthermore several important statues and monuments can be found here, some of which have Roman origins.

Visit this square to admire its fine architecture and to see this ancient part of Milan.

9. Milan Archaeology Museum

Dedicated to the history of ancient Milan, this museum is truly insightful and gives you a glimpse of a time long past.

Located in the Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore, the first part of the museum details the history of ancient Mediolanum, whilst the second part located in the basement has a selection of artwork and sculptures.

Included in the extensive collection are various archaeological remains, theatrical masks, pottery, and armour.

This interesting museum covers many ages of Milan including the Middle Ages, influences from the Etruscan civilization and also the ancient Greeks.

10. Piazza del Duomo

As the central Piazza in Milan, the Piazza del Duomo is an immense open public space that features some impressive architecture and sculptures.

If you are visiting Milan, this should be your starting point – From here you can view the wonderful Duomo and surrounding buildings.

In the centre of the square stands a glorious statue of the first King of united Italy – Vittorio Emmanuel, whilst on one side sits the impressive Royal palace.

Furthermore, there is a host of high-end shops, restaurants and bars to frequent – Shop to your hearts content or enjoy a coffee whilst watching the flocks of tourists and locals go about their daily business.

11. La Scala Opera

There are few buildings in the world that have hosted as many great artists as the Scala Opera.

Located to the north of the Duomo and the east of Castello Sforzesco this opera house is one of the finest in the world and is renowned for its acoustic qualities and opulence.

Inside the main auditorium the decoration and grandeur of the seating and stage is fantastic – 6 tiers of seating and individual boxes frame the stage in a semi-circle and the whole place is full of red velvet drapes and gold furnishings.

12. AC Milan San Siro Stadium

Possibly one of the most renowned and well known stadiums in the world, the San Siro has stood since 1926 as one of the premier sporting venues in Italy.

With a capacity of just over 80,000, it is one of the largest stadiums in Europe and was one of the key stadiums during World Cup 34 and World Cup 90. When visiting the stadium, you will see the iconic circular towers that hold up the colossal tiers, and the huge roof that partially covers the ground.

Both AC Milan and Inter Milan play at this impressive ground and the atmosphere at their home games is simply unbelievable.

Don’t forget to visit the joint museum to learn about the history of these two celebrated Italian clubs.

13. Parco Sempione

As one of the premier parks in Milan, the Paro Sempione is a large public space and gardens that sits behind the Sforzesco Castle.

Originally established in 1888, the park covers 95 acres and contains the fantastic arch of peace.

This wonderful place is beautifully landscaped and contains a myriad of footpaths, bike trails and wooded areas together with many sculptures and ornate fountains.

You can also find a museum in the park and the Torre Branca which is a huge watch tower that offers panoramic views of the city.

If you want a place to relax from the busy city, the Parco Sempione is the perfect location.

14. Brera district

This charming district is located to the north of the Duomo in-between Borgonuovo and Broletto.

A distinct Bohemian atmosphere prevails here and the district is full of art academies, galleries and well-to-do restaurants and bars.

The vibe here is fantastic and you can enjoy a fine meal, go out for a drink, try a little high-end retail therapy, or simply walk the many cobbleds streets and admire the architecture.

15. Walk down the Naviglio Grande

Not many people realise that Milan actually has two canals, one of which is the Naviglio Grande – This canal stretches from the Porta Ticinese to the Ticino river some 50km to the west.

Constructed originally in 1177, the canal was worked on for many years and continued to expand into what it is today.

The section of the canal situated within the city centre is a fantastic place to walk and is lined with old buildings plus a variety of shops and restaurants.

Stroll down a section of the waterway and admire this different part of Milan that is seldom seen or listed in tourist guides.

16. Basilica di San Lorenzo

One of the more important religious buildings in Milan, the Basilica of San Lorenzo is a catholic church that is located in the south western part of central Milan.

As one of the oldest churches in Milan, the Basilica was created in 402 and has stood in some capacity ever since.

The main entrance is framed by a series of colonnades and a statue of the Emperor Maximian stands in the courtyard.

Inside, the interior speaks of extreme age and the colouration is quite sombre; nonetheless, there is a fantastic high altar and also the chapel of Saint Aquilino which features some beautiful ceiling artwork and mosaics.

17. Torre Branca

Located within the Parco Sempione, the Torre Branca is a large observation tower that stands at a colossal 108.6m high.

Constructed in 1933, the tower was designed by Gio Ponti and was originally called the Torre Littoria.

During the 1970’s, the tower was closed for refurbishment but it is once again open to the public.

Ascend the lift to the top of this amazing structure and step into the top of the tower – From here you have unparalleled views of the city of Milan and can see for miles.

On clear days it is possible to see the Alps and the Apennines, together with the expansive city laid out beneath your eyes.

Petit conseil: en marge des visites touristiques, prévoyez du temps pour vous régaler! Milan pour les passionné·e·s d’histoire, d’art et de culture, milan pour les fans de mode, de design et de shopping, le paradis de la promenade, une ville propice à la détente, un régal pour les papilles.

 Milan est une véritable mine d’or pour celles et ceux qui aiment l’histoire, l’art et la culture. Le riche passé de cette métropole du nord de l’Italie est visible à chaque coin de rue. Mais pas d’inquiétude: on ne se sent pas comme dans un musée au cœur de cet ancien centre nerveux de la Renaissance et carrefour commercial majeur. Au contraire, Milan est une ville extrêmement vivante qui allie de manière unique tradition et modernité.

La cathédrale

La cathédrale est sans aucun doute l’attraction touristique numéro un de Milan. Quiconque visite la ville ne peut faire l’impasse sur ce monument, notamment en raison de sa situation centrale, en plein cœur historique de la métropole lombarde.

Voici quelques chiffres impressionnants sur cet édifice gothique, le deuxième lieu de culte d’Italie: il peut accueillir environ 40 000 personnes, sa superficie est de 12 000 mètres carrés et la décoration de ses toits se compose, entre autres, de 3400 statues en marbre.

En parlant de toit: l’un des temps forts de la visite de la cathédrale est la promenade sur ses terrasses. En plus d’un décor digne d’un conte de fées, on y découvrira une curiosité qui n’a rien de religieux: une scène de combat sculptée dans la pierre représentant le boxeur italien Primo Carnera, champion du monde dans les années 1930.

La Cène de Léonard de Vinci

Aucune peinture murale n’est plus célèbre que ce chef-d’œuvre de Léonard de Vinci, situé dans le réfectoire du couvent dominicain, à côté de l’église Santa Maria delle Grazie. Léonard de Vinci a réussi à immortaliser une scène de la Bible de manière particulièrement vivante et en jouant ingénieusement avec la perspective.

Difficile toutefois de se plonger vraiment dans cette œuvre monumentale: la durée de la visite est limitée à 15 minutes en raison de la forte affluence. En outre, il est conseillé d’acheter ses billets plusieurs mois à l’avance. Les visites spontanées restent néanmoins possibles: il faut alors soit acheter un billet combiné incluant d’autres visites, soit simplement demander à l’entrée s’il reste des places libres dans un groupe.

L’ossuaire de l’église San Bernardina alle Ossa

C’est la décoration de la chapelle, faite d’ossements humains, qui rend cette église unique en son genre – et lui confère aussi une légère touche macabre: les murs de la pièce carrée sont presque intégralement recouverts de crânes, tibias, côtes et fémurs. La majorité de ces os proviennent probablement de lépreux décédés dans un hôpital des environs.

Milan est une véritable Mecque pour les amatrices et amateurs de mode et de design, puisqu’elle fait partie des grandes capitales mondiales de la mode. Rien d’étonnant donc à ce qu’on y trouve des boutiques de maisons comme Armani, Trussardi, Prada, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana ou Louis Vuitton. Les fans de design, quant à eux, trouveront leur bonheur dans les divers musées, galeries et boutiques.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

De nombreuses boutiques d’enseignes de haute couture sont installées dans cette magnifique galerie, véritable joyau architectural. Beaucoup de créations de mode de premier plan sont ici réunies sur une surface à taille humaine. Les personnes fatiguées par le lèche-vitrine et le shopping peuvent reprendre des forces dans l’un des restaurants ou des bars. Celles et ceux qui le souhaitent peuvent aussi se rendre sur la place octogonale, au centre de la Galleria, afin de faire un vœu sur le taureau en mosaïque. Pour que le vœu se réalise, le rituel consiste à placer le talon sur les parties génitales du taureau et à faire un tour sur soi-même, ce qui permet, selon la légende, de s’assurer une nouvelle visite à Milan.

Le Quadrilatero della Moda

Les rues Via Montenapoleone, Via Alessandro Manzoni, Via della Spiga et Corso Venezia forment le «quadrilatère doré» où l’on trouve ce qui se fait de mieux en matière de mode. La quasi-totalité des marques de luxe de renom y présentent leurs dernières collections dans leurs showrooms. Pendant la Milano Fashion Week, qui se déroule chaque année en février et en septembre, diverses manifestations sont organisées dans le quartier, également intéressant d’un point de vue architectural avec ses splendides bâtiments.

La Triennale

Le nom annonce la couleur! La Triennale se trouve dans le Palazzo dell’Arte, construit en 1933 dans le Parco Sempione. On peut y admirer de nombreux classiques du design italien, comme des lampes ou des chaises pliantes. Présentés dans l’ordre chronologique, les objets sont mis en scène de manière optimale afin de faire découvrir au public le contexte dans lequel ils ont été créés.

Une promenade dans les différents quartiers de Milan permet de s’imprégner de l’atmosphère particulière qui y règne. Vous apercevrez des détails qu’on ne remarque pas en prenant les transports publics. À pied, il est possible d’explorer des recoins cachés et de bavarder avec les locaux pour mieux comprendre la diversité culturelle et sociale de la ville.

Le quartier de Brera

Le quartier de Brera est sans aucun doute l’un des plus animés de Milan. On y croise musiciens de rue, marchands ambulants et diseuses de bonne aventure. Brera est un quartier artistique qui regorge d’ateliers et de galeries. Pour peu que l’on se laisse porter, on y découvrira des perles rares qui ne figurent dans aucun guide de voyage.

Les canaux artificiels Navigli

Envie de visiter Milan en bateau? C’est possible! La navigation sur le Naviglio Pavese et le Naviglio Grande permet de découvrir Milan sous un autre angle. Mais la promenade le long de ces voies d’eau est tout aussi intéressante. De charmants établissements et boutiques invitent à la détente et à l’émerveillement. Le soir, le quartier de Navigli, avec ses restaurants, bars et clubs, attire les noctambules.

Sonore, vibrante, dynamique et parfois un peu frénétique, Milan offre aussi un nombre surprenant de lieux de quiétude aux personnes en quête de tranquillité. Celles et ceux qui souhaitent fuir l’agitation trouveront rapidement leur bonheur.

Le Parco Sempione

Vu de la cathédrale de Milan, ce vaste espace vert est situé derrière l’imposant Castello Sforzesco. Allongez-vous dans l’herbe pour oublier les bruits de la ville. Les vieux arbres projettent une ombre bienvenue les jours de grande chaleur. Pour la population locale, le Parco Sempione est une zone de loisirs importante. La tour d’observation Torre Branca, située dans le parc, offre une vue panoramique époustouflante. Heureusement, on n’y monte pas à pied: un ascenseur vous amène à 99 mètres de hauteur en 90 secondes.

Le cimetière monumental

Une paix bienfaisante émane du cimetière central de Milan. Avec ses multiples statues, obélisques et temples, il est assurément le cimetière le plus imposant d’Italie. Les monuments funéraires de riches familles semblent rivaliser de splendeur. Dans chaque recoin, des éléments décoratifs attirent le regard. De nombreux personnages célèbres y ont trouvé leur dernière demeure, comme Arturo Toscanini, directeur musical du Teatro alla Scala, l’écrivain Alessandro Manzoni, Angelo Motta, l’inventeur du panettone, ou encore Carlo Mozart, le plus jeune fils de Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

L’Idroscalo

Dans les années 1920, un lac artificiel a été aménagé à proximité directe de l’aéroport de Linate pour servir d’escale aux hydravions. Aujourd’hui, ce plan d’eau allongé et ses environs sont un vrai paradis pour la baignade et les loisirs à Milan. Il se prête à la pratique de divers sports nautiques. L’offre en infrastructures de loisirs telles que des toboggans, balançoires, murs d’escalade ou pistes de patins à roulettes est également considérable, ce qu’apprécient, entre autres, les familles avec enfants.

Il n’est pas difficile de citer des plats typiquement milanais: le risotto et l’ossobucco alla milanese sont bien connus au-delà des frontières nationales. Mais saviez-vous que le panettone, un gâteau de Noël traditionnel à la pâte aérée et aux fruits confits, avait été inventé à Milan? Le Negroni Sbagliato et la boisson apéritive Campari sont également originaires de Milan. Dans les innombrables restaurants, pizzerias, trattorias et bars, l’offre culinaire ne se limite toutefois pas aux seules spécialités milanaises, mais est extrêmement vaste – et savoureuse!

L’Officina Milano

Comment ne pas tomber sous le charme de cet établissement unique en son genre, avec ses canapés capitonnés vintage, son éclairage harmonieux et sa décoration originale? Détente garantie dans le lounge et le bar, où l’on sert des apéritifs et des cocktails. Le personnel du bar connaît sur le bout des doigts toutes les recettes classiques, mais aime surprendre la clientèle avec ses créations maison. Un conseil: allez bruncher le dimanche à l’Officina, à deux pas des canaux de navigation Navigli.

La pâtisserie Marchesi 1824

Cette pâtisserie, dont la tradition remonte à 200 ans, est un petit paradis pour les becs sucrés. Dans les vitrines, tartelettes, mignardises et autres gourmandises n’attendent que vous. Marchesi propose également des pralines et des bonbons. Et bien sûr, le panettone ne manque pas à l’appel. Marchesi 1824 possède trois boutiques dans le centre-ville de Milan.

Escapade en train à Milan

Plusieurs trains directs relient chaque jour différentes villes suisses à Milan. Le trajet dure moins de 3,5 heures depuis Lausanne, Berne et Zurich et environ 4 heures depuis Genève et Bâle. Pour se distraire pendant le voyage, il est possible de se rendre dans la voiture-restaurant et de profiter de la connexion WLAN gratuite.

Pour plus de sérénité, les CFF recommandent aux voyageuses et voyageurs de réserver leur place. En effet, selon l’heure et le jour de la semaine, les trains peuvent être très fréquentés.

Astuce: découvrez la ville dans le cadre d’un voyage Interrail à travers toute l’Italie ou plusieurs pays. Cela revient souvent moins cher qu’avec des billets de parcours.

En outre, prendre le train plutôt que la voiture, c’est aussi faire un geste pour l’environnement. Selon l’écocomparateur de l’horaire CFF, le trajet aller-retour de Zurich à Milan en train permet d’économiser environ 100 kg de CO 2 par rapport au trajet par la route.

Monsieur le Président, distinguées Autorités, illustres représentants de la société civile, Membres du Corps Diplomatique !

Je remercie Monsieur le Président pour les aimables paroles de bienvenue qu’il m’a adressées et qui renouvellent en moi la gratitude pour sa récente visite au Vatican. J’exprime ma reconnaissance à toutes les Autorités pour l’accueil chaleureux dans votre ville-État, carrefour commercial de premier ordre et lieu de rencontre de différents peuples.

Ceux qui arrivent ici pour la première fois ne peuvent pas ne pas être impressionnés par la forêt de gratte-ciel ultramodernes qui semblent surgir de la mer. Ils témoignent clairement de l’ingéniosité humaine, du dynamisme de la société singapourienne et de la perspicacité de l’esprit d’entreprise qui ont trouvé ici un terrain d’expression fertile.

L’histoire de Singapour est celle de la croissance et de la résilience. Après des débuts modestes, cette nation a atteint un haut niveau de développement, prouvant que c’est le résultat de décisions rationnelles et non du hasard : le résultat d’un effort constant pour mener à bien des projets et des initiatives mûrement réfléchies, en harmonie avec les caractéristiques spécifiques du lieu. Nous célébrons ces jours-ci le cent onzième anniversaire de la naissance de Lee Kuan Yew, premier Premier Ministre de la République de Singapour, qui a occupé ce poste de 1959 à 1990 et a donné une forte impulsion à la croissance rapide et à la transformation du pays.

Il est également important que Singapour n’ait pas seulement prospéré sur le plan économique, mais qu’elle se soit efforcée de construire une société dans laquelle la justice sociale et le bien commun sont tenus en haute estime. Je pense en particulier à votre volonté d’améliorer les conditions de vie des citoyens grâce à des politiques de logement public, à un enseignement de qualité et à un système sanitaire efficace. Je souhaite que ces efforts se poursuivent jusqu’à ce qu’ils incluent pleinement tous les habitants de Singapour.

Et à ce propos, je voudrais souligner le risque que comporte un certain pragmatisme et une certaine exaltation du mérite, c’est-à-dire la conséquence non voulue de légitimer l’exclusion de ceux qui sont en dehors des bénéfices du progrès.

Dans ce domaine, je reconnais et salue les diverses politiques et initiatives qui ont été mises en place pour soutenir les personnes en marge, et je souhaite qu’une attention particulière soit accordée aux pauvres, aux personnes âgées - dont le travail a jeté les bases du Singapour que nous connaissons aujourd’hui – et aussi à la protection de la dignité des travailleurs migrants, qui contribuent beaucoup à l’édification de la société, et auxquels il faut garantir un salaire équitable.

Les technologies sophistiquées de l’ère numérique et les développements rapides de l’utilisation de l’intelligence artificielle ne peuvent pas nous faire oublier qu’il est essentiel de cultiver des relations humaines réelles et concrètes ; et que ces technologies peuvent être mises en avant précisément pour nous rapprocher les uns des autres, en promouvant la compréhension et la solidarité, et non pour nous isoler dangereusement dans une réalité fictive et intangible.

Singapour est une mosaïque d’ethnies, de cultures et de religions qui coexistent en harmonie, et ce mot est très important : harmonie. La réalisation et le maintien de cette inclusion positive sont favorisés par l’impartialité des pouvoirs publics, engagés dans un dialogue constructif avec tous, permettant à chacun d’apporter sa contribution particulière au bien commun et ne permettant pas à l’extrémisme ni à l’intolérance de gagner en force et de mettre en danger la paix sociale. Le respect mutuel, la coopération, le dialogue et la liberté de professer sa foi dans la fidélité au droit commun sont des conditions, déterminantes du succès et de la stabilité obtenue par Singapour, prérequis à un développement non conflictuel ni chaotique, mais équilibré et durable.

L’Église catholique à Singapour, dès le début de sa présence, a cherché à apporter sa contribution spécifique au progrès de cette nation, en particulier dans les domaines de l’éducation et de la santé, en s’appuyant sur l’esprit de sacrifice et de dévouement des missionnaires et des fidèles. Toujours animée par l’Évangile de Jésus-Christ, la communauté catholique est également à l’avant-garde des œuvres de charité, contribuant de manière significative aux efforts humanitaires dans la région et gérant à cette fin plusieurs institutions de santé et de nombreuses organisations humanitaires, dont la Caritas que nous connaissons tous.

L’Église également – conformément aux indications de la Déclaration Nostra Aetate du Concile Vatican II sur les relations avec les religions non chrétiennes - a constamment encouragé le dialogue interreligieux et la coopération entre les différentes communautés de foi, dans un esprit d’ouverture et de respect mutuel, qui sont fondamentaux pour la construction d’une société qui soit juste et pacifique.

Ma visite intervient quarante-trois ans après l’établissement des relations diplomatiques entre le Saint-Siège et Singapour. Elle a pour but de confirmer les catholiques dans la foi et de les exhorter à poursuivre avec joie et dévouement leur collaboration avec tous les hommes et toutes les femmes de bonne volonté, en vue de la construction d’une société civile saine et solidaire, pour le bien commun et pour un témoignage limpide de leur propre foi.

Singapour a également un rôle spécifique à jouer dans l’ordre international - ne l'oublions pas - menacé aujourd'hui par les conflits et des guerres sanglantes, et je me réjouis qu’elle ait promu, de façon méritoire, le multilatéralisme et un ordre fondé sur des règles partagées par tous. Je vous encourage à continuer à œuvrer pour l’unité et la fraternité du genre humain, pour le bien commun de tous, de tous les peuples et de toutes les nations, avec une compréhension qui n’exclut ni ne restreint les intérêts nationaux.

Et permettez-moi également de rappeler le rôle de la famille - premier endroit où chacun apprend à entrer en relation avec les autres - à être aimé et à aimer. Dans les conditions sociales actuelles, les fondements sur lesquels reposent les familles sont remis en question et risquent d’être affaiblis. Elles doivent être mises en mesure de transmettre les valeurs qui donnent du sens et de la forme à la vie et d’apprendre aux jeunes à nouer des relations solides et saines. Il convient donc de saluer les efforts déployés par diverses institutions pour promouvoir, protéger et soutenir l’unité de la famille.

Nous ne pouvons pas cacher le fait que nous vivons aujourd'hui une crise environnementale et nous ne devons pas sous-estimer l'impact qu'une petite nation comme Singapour peut avoir sur cette crise. Votre situation unique vous donne accès au capital, à la technologie et au talent, des ressources qui peuvent stimuler l'innovation pour prendre soin de la santé de notre maison commune.

Votre engagement en faveur du développement durable et de la sauvegarde de la création est un exemple à suivre, et votre recherche de solutions innovantes pour relever les défis environnementaux peut encourager d’autres pays à faire de même. Singapour est un exemple brillant de ce que l’humanité peut réaliser en travaillant ensemble en harmonie, avec le sens des responsabilités et dans un esprit d’inclusion et de fraternité. C'est comme un résumé de votre attitude : travailler ensemble, en harmonie, avec un sens des responsabilités et dans un esprit de fraternité et d'inclusion. Je vous encourage à poursuivre sur cette voie, en comptant sur la promesse de Dieu et sur son amour paternel pour tous.

Monsieur le Président, Mesdames et Messieurs, que Dieu vous aide à répondre aux besoins et aux attentes de votre peuple, et vous encourage à faire l'expérience qu'avec ceux qui restent humbles et reconnaissants, Il peut accomplir de grandes choses pour le bien de tous.

By public transport

Electronic card "Podorozhnik" debit cards are the easiest and cheapest way to pay public transport fares for metro, bus, and trams. They can be acquired at the metro cash desks, charged at the desks or the automated ticket machines in metro stations and then used to pay metro and bus fare by simply swiping over the readers at buses or turnstiles. Funds or passes can be loaded onto the card. See info boards besides the cash desks for pricing. There is an additional RUB60 deposit for the card which will be refunded when you return it. The cards work for all metro, tram and trolleybus fares in St. Petersburg and many bus routes. Ticket controllers carry a small card reader to verify if the Podorozhnik card was swiped in the bus.

Fares can also be paid by tapping a Russian debit or credit card on the reader, but the fares are usually higher.

Saint Petersburg's metro system is the second largest in Russia, after that of Moscow . The metro is a cheap and effective way to get around the city, and also a major tourist attraction due to the beautiful decorations of the stations. Amateur photography (without a tripod, etc.) is allowed, although professional photography is prohibited. The trains are fast and run frequently. During rush hour, there are 2-3 minutes between trains. Fares , regardless of the distance traveled, are RUB49 per entry if paid via Podorozhnik debit card or RUB70 if paid by contactless Russian debit or credit card or via a token.

Opening and closing times vary; the subway is closed from approximately midnight to approximately 05:45, depending on the station.

Metro maps can be found in every train car and always have station names in the Latin alphabet. The station names on the platforms are also in the Latin alphabet, and many other signs are in English. Station announcements on the train are only in Russian, but if you listen carefully you will hear the conductor announce the current station name and the next station as the doors are closing.

Stations are deep underground, and transferring trains at transfer stations involves long walks that can take up to 10 minutes.

Trains can be extremely crowded during rush hour. Be aware of your belongings and expect to have to push your way out of the train upon arrival at your station.

Exploring more

The center has much more sights. Mars Field with the Memorial to the Revolutionary Fighters and the Eternal Flame, the Circus, wonderfully baroque Smolny Cathedral, Peter the Great's Cabin, the rolling parkland of the Tauride Palace and Gardens, Alexander Nevsky Monastery, the Yusupov Palace where Rasputin was killed (if you get the chance to see a performance in the theater inside, jump on it), the neoclassical bust-filled Summer Gardens, Mikhailovsky Castle, the Marble Palace, the small but powerfully heartrending Museum of the Defense and Blockade of Leningrad. Literary buffs should seek out Dostoevsky's local haunts, including the famous "Murder Walk" from Crime and Punishment , which will take you right from Raskolnikov's apartment to the door of the very apartment where the grisly deed was done.

Head back across the river to the Petrograd Side , past the Peter and Paul Fortress, you'll find the Saint Petersburg Mosque, the really impressive Military Museum, the museum-ship of the Cruiser Aurora, the ever... interesting Museum of Political History, and the Botanical Gardens. On Vasilievsky , the whole Neva embankment is filled with great museums and grand buildings. Especially great places to visit (aside from the aforementioned Naval Museum and Kunstkamera) include the Menshikov Palace (run by the Hermitage), the Twelve Collegia, and the Mining Museum. And don't forget to hunt down the some 3,300 year-old sphinx statues from the Theban Necropolis!

Further afield

There are many things to see in the north and south of the city—especially in the south. Southern Saint Petersburg is home to the Narva Triumphal Arch and its sister monument—the Moscow Triumphal Gate, the huge Monument to the Heroic Defenders of Leningrad (which honestly should be one of the main attractions in this city, if not for its distance from the center), Moscow Victory Park, and one of the best examples of Stalinist architecture (more interesting than you'd think) at the House of the Soviets, fronted by a very large Lenin statue. The most wonderful sight in southern Saint Petersburg, though, may be the whimsical, candy cane-colored Chesme Church.

The eastern part of the city (colloquially known as the Right bank ) is renowned for its nineteenth century industrial architecture in the districts of Okhta and Porokhovye (former gunpowder factories).

Northern Saint Petersburg is a bit less notable, but adventurous travelers can find some things of interest, especially in the old industrial district around the Finliandskii Station, at the Forestry Academy and Piskaryovskoye Memorial Cemetery for the fallen in the Siege of Leningrad.

The naval fortress of Kronstadt at Kotlin island, nowadays accessible by road across the dam, is a very significant site for fans of the history of military architecture, and makes for enjoyable day trips by boat.

The Telegram Messenger groups SPB_Hangouts , InterNational Events , SPb Couchsurfing , Say Yes Saint Petersburg , and English Meetup Saint Petersburg all contain almost daily events for meeting locals or other foreigners, excursions, or practicing languages.

Opera and Ballet

The Mariinsky is perhaps the most well-known institution for opera and ballet, but it is by no means the only theater in the city. Tickets are sold on each theater's website, at each theatre's box office, and at kiosks and shops called Teatralnaya Kassa. Sometimes blocks of tickets sell out at the kiosks but tickets are still available at the theater, or vice versa, so it is worth checking both places if you have your heart set on a particular performance. It is possible to take not-so-small children into some performances if you take a private box, although you will need to ask when you buy your tickets.

Other Theatres

• Buff State Musical and Drama Theatre , Zanevsky Prospect, 26 , ☏ +7 812 573 95 95 . In a modern building. Offers rich program in drama performances, both classical and modern.  

The music scene in St. Petersburg is diverse, with several classical, jazz, and pop concerts to choose from each week. Tickets are available at the same Teatralnaya Kassa locations as ballet and opera tickets, although tickets to pop concerts - especially US and European stars on tour - sometimes use exclusive distributors. For pop and rock concerts, unless you buy tickets for the dance floor (tanzpol), you are expected to sit quietly in your seat as if you were at a ballet - ushers are vigilant about keeping the audience from standing up, dancing, or cheering (polite applause is allowed, but that's about all).

Several of the ballet and opera theaters above also offer orchestral and recital performances, so those are not repeated below. Also, don't forget the many small clubs where up and coming bands play.

Most cinemas in St. Petersburg show Hollywood films dubbed in Russian. Art cinemas like Dom Kino often show independent American or British movies subtitled in Russian.

Annual Message to Man international documentary, short, and animated films festival takes place in October, screening many films in English.

Canal boat tours

A tour of the canals by boat is a great way to see the city in the summer. The typical tour is through the Moika, out to the Neva to see the Peter and Paul Fortress and the Cruiser Aurora, then in through the Fontanka (sometimes as far as the Mariinsky Theater). Tours start at many points along the route and return to their starting point - hawkers for different boat companies abound on Nevsky Prospect. Boats may or may not have a cafe and toilet on board. Most tours are in Russian but English tours can booked from the Water Tourism Center . Prices range from RUB1,000 to RUB3,000.

Watch football: FC Zenit Saint Petersburg play in the Russian Premier League, the top tier of Russian football. Their home ground is Krestovsky Stadium, on Krestovsky island 10 km north of city centre. Take Metro M3 (Green Line) west towards Begovaya and get off at Novokrestovskaya. The stadium will host matches at the upcoming Euro 2020 tournament.

Viewpoints and rooftops

The best views in the city are from rooftops, such as rooftop bars and restaurants. Nice views can also be obtained by climbing the 250+ steps of St. Isaac's Cathedral. Rooftop tours , generally in Russian and costing RUB1,000, are also offered.

Tourist traps

Gypsy cabs are ubiquitous and a little risky; never take one lingering near bars/clubs where expatriates and tourists congregate.

Street children make their living out of stealing. They can be a hassle and can beg you aggressively. Act like any other Russian would: say no, then just ignore them and go away. If they start touching you, be very firm in pushing them away.

Gay travelers must practice extreme caution while staying in Saint Petersburg, as attacks often occur. Many Russian people look upon public demonstrations of homosexuality with undisguised contempt. It is advised to not openly display one's sexuality.

Natural hazards

Another subtle danger that can affect your trip is the inevitable effect of winter weather. Poor harvesting of snow and ice is a big problem in the city. Caution is advised in snowy winters because of falling ice from roofs, and pedestrians should pay special attention to ice on the streets. Snow on marble is very, very slippery—take small steps and watch your feet!

St. Petersburg regularly experienced floods during its history, sometimes catastrophic. However, the construction of the preventive dam has been completed, and catastrophic floods are unlikely to happen again.

Overall, be warned that if you are used to living in the US and/or Western Europe, Saint Petersburg, as well as the rest of Eastern Europe, will seem different, and, at times, a bit intimidating. On the other hand, Russian people are usually friendly, welcoming and interested towards foreigners, and nothing should happen to you unless you put yourself in harm's way. If you don't care about them they don't care about you, and nothing should get in your way of having a great holiday.

Another danger is the bar scams that abound in the city. Men have been known to have been drugged and robbed by women they met online or on the street. In general avoid any bar that is underground and you have to buzz to get into. Here's how the scam works: Girls approach you and invite to have drinks together, and they will even offer to pay for those drinks. They build trust and take you to other bars. After those bars they talk to a friend on the phone that says that whatever club you want to go is closed and so they take you to a scam bar. There you immediately start being served drinks and food without showing you the menu and then they charge you a ridiculous amount. Calling the police is pointless as they will not show up.

Stay healthy

The private hospitals listed below have English-speaking Russian doctors (very few, if any, hospital staff are expats). Depending on the type of service provided and the terms of one's insurance policy, these hospitals may be able to arrange direct billing with European and American medical insurance companies.

The city's water-system is not ideal because of a number of old pipes and as a result does not provide 100% clean water (too much heavy metals). Some locals boil or also filter tap water before use; you might want to buy it bottled if water quality affects you. It's germ free, though, so brushing your teeth with it is fine—it's just not great for drinking. Cold water is cleaner than hot. Some lodging has no hot water for long periods of time.

There are numerous public toilets, although many charge a nominal fee and toilet paper is not always provided. Many canteens, restaurants, and hotels will allow tourists to use their bathrooms without being a customer.

Saint Petersburg is plagued by mosquitoes during the summer, especially in June, as the swampy surroundings of the city give the mosquitoes excellent living conditions. In budget accommodation with few countermeasures against the mosquitoes, this can be a problem at night, putting your well deserved sleep at risk. Less of an issue in the city center, mosquitoes can be much more numerous on the outskirts. They are not dangerous, though, just a nuisance.

Overnight trips

If you leave Russia and plan to return, make sure you have a multiple entry visa.

• Novgorod — Ancient town with churches and museums, 180 km from St. Petersburg, can be accessed by high-speed trains.
• Narva , Estonia — 160 km southwest of Saint Petersburg on the Narva river, which serves as the border between Russia and Estonia. Twin castles (Russian, established Grand Duke Ivan III, and Danish/Swedish).
• Vologda — this city is considered the heart of Russian North, a popular local travel destination. Reachable by overnight train, from there you can go to Moscow or further north to Arkhangelsk .
• Petrozavodsk and the rest of Karelia — popular Russian travel destination for its beautiful nature and access to White Sea islands. Reachable by overnight or high-speed train.
• Moscow — the Russian capital is reachable by overnight train or in the daytime by the high-speed Sapsan train (about 4 hr) or by plane. As much to see as in St. Petersburg, so plan on several days here.
