Traveling with jewelry can be risky business, so it’s important to pack your accessories thoughtfully. Sure, you can always use Ziploc baggies and tissue paper, but the easiest and safest way to keep your jewelry safe is by using a handy travel-size jewelry case.

Since travel jewelry cases come in all different shapes and sizes, we tried 25 options from trusted luggage and jewelry brands. After loading the cases up with jewelry, we tossed, dropped, and shook them to see how safe the jewelry would be in situations like traveling where rough handling can be expected. From testing, we selected the winning jewelry cases that will keep your jewelry safe and organized whether you’re a jewelry minimalist or maximalist.

Best Overall: Cuyana Travel Jewelry Case

Best budget: bagsmart jewelry organizer bag.

  • Best Roll-Up: Bagsmart Peri Folding Jewelry Organizer

Best Personalization: Mark & Graham Small Travel Jewelry Case

Best large capacity: kendra scott medium travel jewelry case, best for long trips: calpak jewelry case, best compact: vee & co. small travel jewelry case.

  • Best for Everyday Use: Levenger Mini Jewelry Organizer

Best Sustainable: Paravel Jewelry Case

The small, oval container is the perfect size for a weekend getaway.

It could use a few more organizational features.

Cuyana’s oval-shaped case is deceptively spacious in comparison to its smaller design. Perfect for minimalist jewelry wearers, the interior has plenty of room and designated spots for several rings and earrings, but there aren’t specific latches for necklaces or bracelets. The two slip pockets on each side of the case can hold bigger or longer pieces of jewelry, but they run the risk of getting tangled without a latch so we wish the organization was a bit better. Made with genuine leather, the case has a protective exterior with a soft suede interior to further guard the jewelry against scratching or other damage. Throughout six months of tests, we loved this case for weekend getaways and longer trips alike and found it to be the perfect size to toss in a backpack or personal item.

Travel + Leisure / Joy Kim

The bag is spacious yet compact and comes with a handle to carry it easily.

The quality feels a bit lower than other cases we tried.

Designed similarly to a toiletry bag, we love that this wallet-friendly jewelry case comes with a top handle to transport it to and from a suitcase with ease. The compact bag is also a great deal considering how much jewelry it can hold while still being easy to pack. The polyester material is protective and flexible so the bag can pack down to a smaller size depending on how much jewelry is inside. The interior has an earring panel, ring bands, necklace clips, and various zippered pockets for storing all of the jewelry you want to pack for a trip. While we didn’t notice any issues with quality during testing, the materials feel less durable than other pricier cases we tried. We tossed the packed jewelry case around a bit during our tests and the items remained perfectly safe without any tangling or damage. Even after traveling with the case on seven flights, trains, and throughout more than four roadtrips during our six months of tests, nothing became tangled and the case is proving to be durable and sturdy.

Best Roll-up: Bagsmart Peri Folding Jewelry Organizer

The compartments roll out, which makes it easier to pack jewelry.

It was slightly difficult to put the earrings on the designated card.

Bagsmart impressed us a second time with their roll-up jewelry organizer, which was the easiest bag to pack with jewelry during testing. After six months of use, we love that it can fit a lot of jewelry and has compartments big enough for even the biggest hoops and other dramatic earrings. The envelope-style case unrolls and lies flat so you can easily see all of the pockets, latches, and hooks for storing every piece of jewelry you could ever need for traveling thanks to the larger capacity. We had some slight difficulty getting earrings into the holes in the earring card, but it was just a minor inconvenience, and there are plenty of other spots to place hoops and studs. Made with cotton fabric, the case may feel a bit flimsy, but is soft and protective, and it’s very compact since it can lie fairly flat even after it’s packed with jewelry.

The Details: Cotton | 9.06 x 6.3 x 5.75 inches

Mark & Graham

It comes in 28 color and pattern options — plus it's monogrammable.

After six months of using the case, we wish it had more space for necklaces, bracelets, and larger earrings.

Looking for the perfect gift for a traveler? You can monogram this Mark & Graham jewelry case with up to three letters for a personalized touch that makes the gift all the more thoughtful. The square-shaped case has a sturdy exterior that feels like it will hold up perfectly in a packed carry-on and the pebbled vegan leather gives the box a sophisticated look while sitting on a desk or dresser. The interior is split into two sections with a mirror divider to separate the box, which makes it slightly difficult to fit larger jewelry pieces like a watch or chunky necklace, but after six months of testing, we did like that the separate sections help you access all your items without spilling everything out. We also love that there are tons of ring pillow slots so if you’re a big ring wearer, this jewelry case is an excellent option. In addition, there are several necklace or earring latches as well as a slip pocket and sections for bracelets or broaches.

The Details: Vegan leather, linen | 4.5 x 4.5 x 2.25 inches

Kendra Scott

The large size of this jewelry box makes it useful for heavy packers or at-home use.

It doesn’t have any necklace hooks.

Jewelry maximalists will appreciate the bigger size of Kendra Scott’s jewelry case. It looks like a traditional jewelry box that sits on a dresser, but it’s also very portable thanks to its lightweight materials and design. The interior has four large compartments to easily drop in bracelets, necklaces, or watches without any hassle and there are over 10 ring pillow slots for rings or earrings. To keep all the packed jewelry safe, the case comes with a divider to prevent items from jostling around on the go. The case also comes with a small matching zippered pouch that you can keep in the box or remove for extra storage. We found this separate pouch to be perfect for use on shorter trips when you may not need to bring the full case. While we wish the box had a few more organizational features like necklace hooks or earring holes, the jewelry remained perfectly intact after we shook it around, so we’re confident that the box keeps items safely tucked away. Plus, after six months of use, the stylish case still looks new and is a great option for home storage, too.

The Details: Polyurethane, polyester | 8 x 5.5 x 2.5 inches

After six months of traveling with this case, not one necklace became tangled thanks to the plentiful hooks.

We wish it had more storage options for studs.

If you’re embarking on an international trip that includes a checked bag, we recommend this jewelry case from Calpak to weather the journey. Since the rectangular jewelry case is bigger, it can easily store enough jewelry for several weeks of traveling. The structured design makes it ultra-durable and our favorite part is that it has a built-in drawstring bag that does an excellent job of keeping bracelets, watches, or earrings safely secured in the bottom section of the jewelry case. The top part has a variety of necklace latches and a ring holder for even more security. When we rigorously shook the container, none of the jewelry budged from its original spots, so we feel confident that this case will protect your valuables in a checked bag with no issues.

The Details: Faux leather, faux suede | 7 x 5 x 2.5 inches

The square-shaped box is small enough to easily fit in a carry-on or backpack.

The jewelry might scratch up the mirror on the divider.

The lower price and superior functionality make this petite jewelry case an excellent option for anyone looking for a place to store their accessories. It’s smaller than a lot of the options we tested, so we think it’s ideal for travelers needing to save space in a backpack or suitcase. Despite its compact stature, this jewelry box can fit tons of jewelry from studs to a leather watch. It’s intuitive to pack the case with rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and more since there are designated latches, slots, and compartments for virtually everything. When we shook the case, all of the jewelry remained packed away in its original spot without any damage occurring. The box has a divider with a mirror on one side and our only worry is that the mirror could get scratched by the metals or vice-versa, so you may want to put a small piece of fabric between the mirror just in case.

The Details: PU vegan leather | 3.94 x 3.94 x 1.97 inches

Best for Everyday Use: Levenger Carrie Mini Jewelry Organizer

The small design makes it easy to store the case in a purse.

It can’t fit large jewelry pieces.

Jewelry minimalists will love this tiny jewelry case for keeping track of just a few pieces of jewelry while on the go. After six months of use, we love that this Levenger mini jewelry case has latches, hooks, and pockets to protect and organize rings, bracelets, and necklaces. It is on the small side with minimum space for studs, but light packers will appreciate the hard, durable exterior that still looks new after six months. The genuine leather exterior and suede interior feels luxurious and looks elegant, so this also makes a great jewelry case for newlyweds going on a honeymoon . We especially love the tiny zippered pocket in the middle of the case for storing extra small jewelry items like studs or stacking rings.

The Details: Leather, microsuede | 4.25  x 4.5 x 1 inches

All of the materials used to make this case are recycled.

The organizational features could be better and, after six months of use, we think it's a bit too large to pack in a carry-on.

Paravel is one of our favorite luggage brands , so we’re pleased to report that its jewelry case impressed us, too. The circular case is made entirely of recycled materials from post-consumer plastic water bottles and upcycled zippers to create an eco-friendly accessory for travel. Besides the sustainability factor, the case comes with a large drawstring pouch that makes it easy to drop in larger pieces of jewelry like bracelets or watches. The top flap of the case has a ring holder and earring post to store smaller pieces of jewelry, but we wish there were a few more organization features like necklace latches or zippered pockets. However, we love the vintage-style design and, like most Paravel bags, you can monogram the case with initials for a special touch.

The Details: Recycled canvas, vegan leather | 5.6 x 3.6 inches

Other Travel Jewelry Cases We Liked

The jewelry cases below get an honorable mention since they still performed well in testing, but fell slightly short compared to our top performers.

Benevolence Plush Velvet Travel Jewelry Box Organizer : This jewelry box can fit a ton of items, but you’ll want to make sure everything is secure before traveling since we noticed most of the jewelry became dislodged during testing.

Mejuri Travel Case : The case looks elegant and sleek on the outside, but the interior doesn’t offer much in the organizational department, so it’s best for minimalist travelers.

After thoroughly researching jewelry cases from trusted brands, we selected 25 options to first test out in our New York City lab. We packed each case with every type of jewelry you can think of, including rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, watches, and more to get a feel for the usefulness of the organization features. Then, we tossed, dropped, and shook the cases (think Kourtney Kardashian level of salad bowl shaking) to see if the jewelry remained safely secured in place or if the pieces moved around. We also examined the cases for any scuffing or damage.

With our lab testing portion complete, we then rated the jewelry cases based on ease of use, capacity, design, and quality to determine the winners. We will continue to test the jewelry cases for an additional six months so we can see how each one performs while traveling in a more natural setting after the lab testing.

Tips for Buying a Jewelry Case

Buy the right size case.

First, you’ll want to think about how much jewelry you travel with to determine the best size for your needs. For those who travel with bigger pieces of jewelry like watches or chunky necklaces, consider getting a more structured case with large compartments. Delicate or minimalist jewelry will pack better in an envelope or binder style of jewelry case. And if your jewelry collection consists of just a few pieces, opt for a mini jewelry case to save space in your luggage.

Consider organization

Most jewelry cases come with latches, hooks, pockets, and pillows to hold pretty much any piece of jewelry you can think of. Like other types of travel organizers , some jewelry cases are more barebones than others, so you’ll want to buy a case according to your organization preferences or based on the type of jewelry you travel most with. If most of your jewelry consists of earrings, be sure to get a box that has pockets and hole cards with spots for hoops, studs, and dangling earrings.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best way to keep your jewelry safe and organized is to use a jewelry case. The best thing about travel jewelry cases is that they often come with designated slots for all types of accessories to make packing intuitive and quick. If you want to add an extra layer of protection, you can always place tissue or fabric between your jewelry to prevent the pieces from rubbing against one another in transit.

Once your jewelry is packed into the case, we recommend placing the jewelry case between soft clothing for safekeeping or in a personal item in case you have to gate-check your bag when flying. It can be risky to place a jewelry case in a checked bag since you may run the risk of the bag getting lost, but it depends on your comfort level for flying with potentially valuable items.

The Best Watch Travel Cases for Traveling With Timepieces

watch travel case featured image

Some people adhere to the idea of a one-watch collection; they just need a single timepiece to get them through any situation. But if you’re the type who likes to have a steady rotation of timepieces —from small to digital — you likely have a place to store them at home, whether that’s a valet tray by the door or a watch box in your closet. But what about when you’re on the go? If you’re going to travel with a few different men’s watches , it’s important to have cases that are protective but not so bulky you have to decide between your watches and your toiletry bag. That’s why we’ve picked out the best travel watch cases for your next trip.

How to Choose a Watch Travel Case

There are quite a few different watch travel cases, and the style you choose will depend on how many watches you pack, what kinds of watches you have and how much protection you need. One popular style is a watch roll, which can actually refer to a couple of different kinds of cases. Some watch rolls are hardshell cases with a watch pillow to keep the shape of the watch. There are also watch rolls that are made from soft, flexible canvas. The latter is convenient and easy to store, but less protective. Because you also have to fold your watches, soft watch rolls may not be ideal for stainless steel watches that don’t lay flat. You can also get zippered boxes and cases in different sizes and shapes.

Whether you just want to carry one extra timepiece or you’re going to tote around the whole collection, these travel watch cases will see you through your journeys. Of course, these also make great gifts for the watch lover in your life. Here are some of the best watch travel case options you can buy online.

Jewelry boxes are the best thing to keep all of your favorite shimmering accessories in one place and organized so you don’t accidentally misplace half of a pair of earrings, or get your necklaces all knotted from storing in one big pile. Take this travel jewelry box for example: perfect for a modern aesthetic, this rectangular box is crafted from wood, and wrapped with fabric. It features an interior mirror on the lid, ivory suede fabric lining, one removable tray with ring rolls, and more interior storage.

  • Overall: 2.4'' H x 7.4'' W x 5.5'' D

I’m thankful for this pretty light blue suede jewelry box! It is just the right size to store and travel, the earrings I am wearing at the moment. (My main earring collection is in another box.) The earrings of all types and styles are held firmly in this box and I also fit in light bracelets. There is a foam cover to place on the top of the inside, to make sure they stay put when the box is moved. Another Wayfair Winner!. Myrene. Palmyra, VA. 2021-03-18 12:33:09

The concept came from never finding a convenient and safe place to remove rings where rings are best taken off such as at the gym, salon, golf course, while traveling or at home. The manufacturer will give you peace of mind knowing your treasured rings are protected and close to you. It is portable, light, waterproof, airtight and floats, and comes with a cushioned base and three padded dividers to separate and protect your rings and investment. This product will hold up to a 12.5 ring with a stone. Four bands can easily be stacked inside, but capacity will depend on the height and setting of the stone. It can be safely attached to your bag with the cord and clip.

  • Great gift idea for wedding showers, engagment parties
  • Comes with 3 dividers to protect your rings. Will fit men and womens rings with and without stones.

Jewelry Storage Case

Affordable and stylish with pockets, hooks and drawers? Check, check and check! This faux leather cabinet is an Amazon favorite for good reason. It has four pull-out drawers, including one with an extra-deep bottom, as well as a ring roll, watch pillows, dedicated earring storage and a swing-out cabinet on each side, both featuring pockets and eight necklace hooks.

Plus, if you're worried about the safety of your valuable fine jewelry pieces, take note that the top compartment locks. "This is just what I was looking for," writes one Amazon review . "I have a large variety of items and this has a lot of room with many compartments allowing me to easily organize what I have."

One five-star Amazon review describes it as good quality, adding that the storage case "enabled me to move all my jewelry that was scattered on my dresser and two other boxes into this one, making it much easier to see what I have, so I'll actually wear more of it now." YAMAZAKI Jewelry Stand

Jewelry Stand

One GH editor owns a similar jewelry stand and appreciates the hooks and extra rod to store bracelets, watches and necklaces in a stylish manner. The minimalist wood detailing and steel body makes it more durable than a delicate glass tray or jewelry box. The same editor places her rings in the base, as pictured, as well as the jewelry she plans to wear the next day. We like that you can lean your phone against the hanging bar, that way you can easily play tap to the next song or podcast episode while you get ready in the morning.

One five-star review sums up this organizer well: "I like that this takes up minimal counter space yet allows you to actually see your jewelry and prevent tangled necklaces. It’s a simple design so your jewelry is the focal point." Our editor used to strictly use traditional jewelry boxes before purchasing this stand, but is now converted and prefers looking at her collection all hung up on display.

Calpak Jewelry Case

Jewelry Case

Our pros have previously reviewed Calpak luggage and feel confident recommending the brand's jewelry case — available in six colors. While it's one of our most expensive picks at just under $100, the faux leather exterior and faux suede interior look (and feel) luxurious. If you just got your ears pierced or have a minimal collection, this case is the perfect solution. Its compact design features snap tabs to store rings and keep necklaces untangled, a 28-hole earring card and a drawstring pocket for extra accessories.

We appreciate the zipper closure to keep everything secure and that the organizer will look nice on your dresser or in your suitcase. It has a 4.7-star rating on Calpak's site with shoppers calling it the "best purchase of the year" and describing it as a "secure and classy case."

How we chose the best jewelry organizers

line break

Organizing experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute evaluate everyday essentials that help keep each room in your home tidy, whether it's food storage containers for your pantry or larger furniture items that fit toys. To find the best jewelry organizers on the market, we consulted previous testing for GH's 2022 Cleaning and Organizing Awards . Pros evaluated organizational features, capacity, design and more for each style, reading through online shopper reviews to confirm the product performed well in the real world. Our editors spoke with experts in the jewelry and organizing industries to gain more insight into the category and help readers better organize their jewelry collections.

What to look for when shopping for a jewelry organizer

line break

Picking the right jewelry box is key to keeping your accessories organized, regardless of how big or small your collection is. When it comes to storing your jewelry, you'll want to prioritize the following features:

✔️ Design: Jewelry organizers come in various styles that cater to different storage and display needs. The best choice generally depends on the size and type of your collection, as well as the level of organization and display you're looking for. Closed storage options like boxes, cases and roll-ups are typically better suited for fine jewelry, especially if they're lined with velvet or felt to protect from scratches. Meanwhile, open storage options like stands, trees and hangers can be better suited to everyday jewelry and costume pieces, and help to prevent tangling.

✔️ Size: When choosing a size, think about where you'll be keeping your jewelry box and how much space you have. "The location needs to be in a place that makes the most sense for your bedroom and where you get dressed," says Phillip. Make sure to double-check the measurements before purchasing any jewelry box or organizer.

✔️ Material: Jewelry boxes and organizers can be made from various materials including faux and vegan leather, wood, glass or fabric. A velvet interior is also popular. Vegan leather and glass tend to be more expensive, but you also want to think about how you plan to use your organizer. For example, a solid material is fine if the organizer will stay on your bureau but if you plan to travel with it, a softer material is the way to go.

✔️ Division of storage space: You want to buy a storage solution with enough compartments and tiers that work for your specific collection. "If you are ring heavy, then you want to make sure you have enough 'rolls' or 'channels,'" says Phillip. "If you are more into necklaces, you may need more cubbies to keep everything separated." He also suggests thinking about how you tend to search for and wear your jewelry, to make it easier to find certain pieces when you go looking for them.

What's the best way to organize jewelry?

line break

First and foremost, one of the above jewelry organizers will do wonders to keep necklaces, bracelets, earrings and watches separate from each other and in one place. "The best organizers should keep the jewelry protected and untangled and easy to organize, access and put back," says Home Care & Cleaning Lab Executive Director Carolyn Forté .

You may even consider more than one organizer. "Try not to think of your jewelry box as a 'catch-all,'" says Phillip, explaining that you may want to purchase multiple boxes or trays, especially if you have a sizable collection. "For example, a smaller box for the 'good stuff,' a box for the everyday, a box for the party items," he says. "You can buy a solution that appropriately fits each of these needs and store them in a proper place. Not all of your jewelry needs to be front and center everyday."

You can improve your organizational method further by organizing by type. "You want to try to keep similar items together, [like] two different sets of pearl earrings," says Phillip. "[Or] if you only wear a certain pair of earrings with a certain necklace, then maybe they should be grouped together." It may also help to organize items based on how frequently you wear them (i.e. statement earrings in the back for special occasions and your go-to gold hoops on the top for easy access).

In the end, it will come down to how much space you have for storage and whether you want to subtly hide your collection or put it on full display.

Portable travel safes are the perfect solution for keeping your jewelry secure while on the go. These compact and convenient safes offer peace of mind and make it easy to keep your belongings safe and organized. Here are some reasons why portable travel safes are a great choice for storing your jewelry:

  • Compact Size: Portable travel safes are designed to be lightweight and compact, making them easy to carry and pack in your luggage. They are small enough to fit in your backpack or suitcase without taking up much space, yet spacious enough to accommodate your jewelry.
  • Secure Locking Mechanism: Travel safes come with a strong locking mechanism, such as a combination lock or a key lock, ensuring that your jewelry remains securely stored. Some safes even have a built-in steel cable that allows you to tether the safe to a fixed object in your hotel room, adding an extra layer of protection.
  • Protective Padding: Portable travel safes usually feature padded interiors to protect your jewelry from scratches and damage. The soft lining prevents your items from shifting during transit, keeping them safe and organized. It also adds a layer of cushioning to prevent any accidental bumps or impacts that may occur while traveling.

Most safes also have a compact and lightweight design, making them easy to handle and transport.
  • Peace of Mind: Knowing that your jewelry is secure and protected gives you peace of mind while you are on the go. Portable travel safes provide the reassurance that your valuable possessions are safe from theft, loss, or damage, allowing you to focus on enjoying your trip without any worries.

How to Easily Check Your Chase Travel Credit

When you're traveling, whether it's for business or pleasure, it's important to keep your valuable items, such as jewelry, safe and secure. Leaving them in your hotel room is often not the best option, as you never know who might have access to it. Carrying them with you at all times is also not ideal, as it can increase the risk of losing or misplacing them. That's where hidden compartments in luggage come in handy.

Hidden compartments are discreet and effective for hiding valuables while traveling. They provide an added layer of security and peace of mind, allowing you to enjoy your trip without constantly worrying about the safety of your jewelry. Here's how you can utilize these hidden compartments to protect your valuables:

  • Choose luggage with built-in hidden compartments: Some luggage brands offer models with built-in hidden compartments specifically designed for storing valuables. These compartments are often located inside the lining of the bag or underneath a false bottom. Look for luggage that has these features to make your travel experience more secure.
  • Use zippered pockets: Many suitcases come with small zippered pockets on the inside or outside. These pockets are great for storing jewelry as they are discreet and less likely to be noticed by potential thieves. Remember to choose a pocket that is not easily accessible when the suitcase is closed, such as one hidden behind a larger pocket.
  • Invest in packing cubes or organizers with hidden compartments: Packing cubes or organizers with hidden compartments are a fantastic way to keep your jewelry organized and hidden in plain sight. These cubes usually have multiple compartments, allowing you to separate different pieces of jewelry and keep them secure. They can be easily placed in your suitcase without drawing attention to your valuable items.
  • DIY hidden compartments: If your luggage doesn't come with built-in hidden compartments, you can create your own using a few simple materials. One popular method is to use a small toiletry bag or a makeup bag with multiple compartments. Slide your jewelry into one of the compartments and place it inside a larger bag or suitcase. This helps to conceal your valuables and makes them less likely to be targeted.
  • Distribute your valuables: Another safeguarding tip is to distribute your valuables throughout different bags or compartments. Don't keep all your jewelry in one place, as it increases the risk of losing everything if that particular bag or compartment is targeted. Spread out your valuable items across your luggage to minimize potential losses.
  • Secure your luggage with locks: Adding locks to your luggage can act as a deterrent to thieves and provide an additional level of protection for your valuables. Make sure to choose reliable locks that cannot be easily picked or bypassed. Also, consider TSA-approved locks, which can be opened by airport security if necessary.

Remember to always keep a detailed inventory of your valuables, including photographs and descriptions. This will help in the unlikely event that your jewelry goes missing or is stolen. Additionally, don't forget to check your travel insurance policy to see if it covers lost or stolen jewelry.

In conclusion, utilizing hidden compartments in your luggage is an effective way to keep your jewelry safe while traveling. Whether you opt for luggage with built-in compartments or create your own DIY solutions, always prioritize the security of your valuables. By taking these precautions, you can enjoy your trip with peace of mind knowing that your jewelry is discreetly and securely hidden away.

A Guide on How to Check the Breakdown of Travel Voucher ID DFAS

When it comes to traveling with jewelry, one of the most important considerations is how to keep it safe and secure. It's not uncommon for travelers to worry about the safety of their valuables, especially when they are on the move and away from the security of their home. That's where personal lock boxes come in.

A personal lock box is a small, portable container that is designed to keep your jewelry secure while you travel. It is usually made of sturdy materials such as metal or plastic and comes with a built-in lock that requires a key or a combination to open. The lock box is small enough to fit into your luggage or carry-on bag, making it convenient to take with you wherever you go.

One of the biggest advantages of using a personal lock box is that it is customizable to your specific needs. Many lock boxes come with removable dividers or compartments, allowing you to organize and separate your jewelry items as you see fit. This is especially useful if you are traveling with a variety of jewelry pieces, such as earrings, bracelets, rings, and necklaces. You can easily customize the lock box to accommodate different sizes and types of jewelry, ensuring that each piece is protected and easily accessible.

Personal lock boxes are also a reliable solution for keeping jewelry safe while traveling. They provide a physical barrier between your valuable items and potential thieves, deterring them from attempting to steal your jewelry. The built-in lock adds an extra layer of security, making it difficult for anyone to open the lock box without the key or combination. This gives you peace of mind knowing that your jewelry is protected and secure.

When choosing a personal lock box, it's important to consider a few factors. First, look for a lock box that is made of durable materials and has a solid construction. This will ensure that it can withstand the rigors of travel and offer long-lasting protection for your jewelry. Second, choose a lock box that is the right size for your needs. It should be large enough to hold all of your jewelry pieces, but not so bulky that it becomes a hassle to carry around. Finally, consider the lock mechanism. Some lock boxes use a key, while others require a combination. Choose the option that you feel most comfortable with and ensure that you keep the key or combination in a safe place.

Once you have selected a personal lock box, it's important to use it properly to maximize its effectiveness. Always lock the box securely when you are not accessing your jewelry. Keep the key or combination in a separate, secure location, such as a hidden compartment in your luggage or a locked drawer in your hotel room. When traveling, never leave your lock box unattended in a public space, such as a hotel room or airport lounge. Instead, carry it with you or store it in a locked suitcase or bag.

In conclusion, personal lock boxes are an excellent solution for keeping your jewelry safe while traveling. They provide customizable organization and reliable security, giving you peace of mind during your trip. By following a few simple guidelines and using your lock box properly, you can ensure that your jewelry remains secure and protected throughout your travels.

This area where the East European Plain touches the Black Sea has seen habitation by civilizations stretching back to Scythian, Roman, Greek, and Ottoman times. In the 18th century, the Russian Empire started to lay a foothold by establishing outposts on this frontier, but then eventually with expansion of the empire it became more of a commerce center due to its premier trade location where the Black Sea meets the Don River. And it saw industrialization, too, causing it to draw people and become one of the largest Russian cities for a time. But it was not without adversity that it passed through the ages, as it saw incursions from the Russian Civil War, cholera epidemics, and occupation by the Germans during the Great World Wars. One of its darker moments was the execution of 30,000 Russian Jews by occupying Nazi forces at Zmievskaya Balka.

But today it is a peaceful metropolis full of green esplanades and theaters and cafes.

History of Rostov-on-Don

Foundation of rostov-on-don.

Long before the foundation of Rostov-on-Don, the first Russian emperor Peter I wanted to build a fortress on the site of the present city to protect the southern borders of the Russian Empire from the raids of the Ottomans and Crimean Tatars. But because of the Treaty of the Pruth, which ended the Russo-Turkish War of 1710-1711, it became impossible as the treaty was a political victory for the Ottoman Empire.

By the decree of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna dated December 15, 1749, the Temernitskaya customs house was founded here, at the mouth of the Temernik River, on the right bank of the Don River in its lower reaches, about 46 kilometers from the mouth of the river, where it flows into the Sea of Azov. In the spring of 1750, a pier, a warehouse, a quarantine, and a garrison barracks were built at the customs.

In 1756, the international “Russian and Constantinople Trading Company” was opened here. Temernitsky port became the only Russian port in the south of the Russian Empire through which trade with the countries of the Black, Aegean and Mediterranean Seas was carried out.

In 1760-1761, the construction of the fortress began to protect the lower reaches of the Don. The garrison of the fortress numbered more than four thousand people. The fortress was originally named after Metropolitan Demetrius of Rostov and Yaroslavl (1652-1709) canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church.

More Historical Facts…

Over time, houses for merchants and clergymen, shops, taverns, a prison, and other buildings were built here. The port of Rostov quickly became known in Russia and abroad, attracting more and more Russian and foreign merchants. Foreign goods went from here to the depths of Russia: to Moscow, Smolensk, Kazan, Orenburg, Vyatka, and to numerous fairs.

The fortress had a large garrison, was armed with 238 guns and for half a century was used as a rear base for the Russian troops. The fortress of St. Demetrius of Rostov played a significant role during the Russian-Turkish wars of the second half of the 18th century. During the Russian-Turkish war of 1768-1774, it served as a base for the offensive against Azov.

Rostov-on-Don in the late 18th - 19th centuries

By the end of the 18th century, because of the annexation of the territory of the Crimean Khanate to Russia, the fortress lost its strategic importance, the fortifications were dismantled. In 1779, Catherine II allowed the Crimean Armenians to settle here. They founded the settlement of Nor-Nakhichevan to the east of the fortress. Today, it is the Proletarsky District of Rostov-on-Don.

The name of the fortress and the settlement subsequently changed: the fortress of St. Demetrius, the fortress of Demetrius of Rostov, the Rostov fortress, just Rostov, and finally, to distinguish it from the old Russian town of Rostov the Great located near Yaroslavl, Rostov-on-Don.

In 1811, Rostov received its coat of arms, which depicted a fortress tower, symbolizing the town’s past. After eliminating the danger from the Ottoman Empire and the development of the southern trade routes, Rostov-on-Don found itself in the center of the country’s foreign trade. In 1836, a new Rostov customs house was built, and in 10 years the trade turnover of the Rostov port increased by about 30 times.

By the middle of the 19th century, it became one of the largest export points for grain and iron in the Russian Empire. The rapid growth in freight traffic caused a strong impetus to the development of river shipping and shipbuilding. Rostov was famous for two fairs, some of the biggest in the country. Rostov also had the largest fish market in Russia.

In 1875, with the construction of the Rostov-Vladikavkaz railway, the opening of the first drawbridge over the Don and the first large railway station, Rostov-on-Don turned into one of Russia’s largest railway junctions. In 1887, it was included in the Don Cossack Host Oblast (an administrative-territorial unit populated mostly by Don Cossacks and governed under special conditions), which was the impetus for the further development of industry.

According to the 1897 census, 119,476 people lived in Rostov-on-Don. The following native languages were mentioned: Russian - 94,673, Jewish - 11,183, Ukrainian - 5,612, Polish - 1,444, Armenian - 1,182, German - 1,182, Tatar - 1,172.

Rostov-on-Don in the 20th century and beyond

During the Russian Civil War of 1918-1920, Rostov-on-Don played a prominent role as one of the centers of the anti-Bolshevik White movement. The Soviet period in the history of Rostov-on-Don began on February 11, 1920. In the late 1920s, active construction began in Rostov-on-Don. In 1926, the plant “Rostselmash”, a giant of the Soviet agricultural machine building, was founded.

On November 29, 1935, the country’s largest drama theater with an auditorium for 2,200 seats was opened in the city. The theater building was designed in the shape of a giant tractor. On September 13, 1937, Azov-Black Sea Krai was divided into Krasnodar Krai with the center in Krasnodar and Rostov Oblast with the center in Rostov-on-Don. In 1939, Rostov-on-Don was the 4th most populated city in Soviet Russia - 510 thousand people.

During World War II, German troops occupied Rostov-on-Don twice: in the fall of 1941 and in the summer of 1942. On November 20, 1941, the Germans entered the city for the first time. A week later, on November 28, Soviet troops recaptured the city during the Rostov offensive operation. The liberation of Rostov was the first significant victory of the Red Army in the initial period of the war.

Rostov-on-Don remained Soviet until July 1942, when, after the failure of the Red Army offensive near Kharkov, the German command launched an offensive in the Kuban and the Caucasus. On July 24, 1942, the 17th Army of the Wehrmacht entered Rostov-on-Don. On February 14, 1943, after the victory at Stalingrad, during the general retreat of the Wehrmacht in the southern sector of the Eastern Front, Rostov-on-Don was finally liberated from German troops.

The war caused great damage to Rostov-on-Don, about 12 thousand houses were destroyed. On August 9, 1945, a general plan for the restoration of the city was approved. It was included in the list of the 15 largest and oldest Russian cities to be rebuilt in the first place. By the early 1950s, it was almost completely done.

In the 1970s, the reconstruction of Rostselmash and other large enterprises of the city was carried out. As a result of mass housing construction, large residential areas Western and Northern were built. The area of the city’s housing stock more than doubled in three decades. In 1987, Rostov-on-Don became one of the cities of the USSR with a population of over one million.

After the collapse of the USSR, Rostov-on-Don became one of the largest business centers and the 10th most populous city in Russia. In 1999, its 250th anniversary was celebrated, a lot of architectural monuments were restored.

In 2000, Rostov-on-Don became the center of the Southern Federal District (about 11% of the total population of Russia). In 2008, it was awarded the honorary title “City of Military Glory”. In 2018, Rostov-on-Don hosted five matches of the FIFA World Cup.

Rostov-on-Don - Features

Rostov-on-Don is located in the southeastern part of the East European Plain. The city is mostly located on the right bank of the Don River, on the left bank there are some industrial enterprises, shopping and entertainment centers. The distance to the Azov Sea is about 46 km, to the Black Sea - 380 km, to Moscow - 1,130 km. Unofficially, Rostov-on-Don is called the “Gateway to the Caucasus” and the “southern capital of Russia”.

The climate in the city is temperate continental. Winters are mild and with little snow; the average January temperature is minus 3.0 degrees Celsius. Summers are hot, long and dry, with a predominance of sunny weather; the average July temperature is plus 23.4 degrees Celsius.

The historical coat of arms of Rostov-on-Don, adopted in 1811, depicts a tower symbolizing a barrier from the raids of neighboring peoples (the Crimean Tatars and Turks) and weapons of these peoples as war trophies. The City Day of Rostov-on-Don is celebrated on the third Sunday of September.

Rostov-on-Don is one of the largest economically developed cities in the south of Russia. The products of “Rostselmash” (agricultural machinery) cover more than 50% of the Russian market, “Don Tobacco” - 12%. “Rostvertol” is the only enterprise on the territory of the Russian Federation that produces helicopters for various purposes, “Yug Rusi” is known as the largest producer and exporter of sunflower oil.

This city is the largest transport hub in the Southern Federal District of Russia. Platov International Airport, commissioned in December 2017 for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, is located about 40 km from Rostov-on-Don and offers regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Astrakhan, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Sochi, Dubai, Istanbul, and a number of other cities. Several federal and regional highways pass through Rostov-on-Don, including the M-4 “Don” highway, which runs along the outskirts of the eastern side of the city.

Too low traffic capacity of streets and lack of good transport interchanges plus a large traffic flow, especially during peak hours, are the main reasons for frequent traffic jams. Also, the problem of parking for personal vehicles is very acute, especially in the old part of the city, in the center. Cars parked near office buildings occupy a large area of the roadway, which also leads to the creation of traffic jams.

Many in Russia know the criminal nickname of this city: “Rostov - papa” meaning “Rostov - dad” (similar to the nickname of the city of Odessa in Ukraine - “Odessa - mama” meaning “Odessa - mom”). Rostov-on-Don and Odessa became the southern capitals of the criminal world during the late Russian Empire.

At the end of the 19th century - the beginning of the 20th century, a lot of criminals led a nomadic, vagrant lifestyle. Therefore, when they were detained without passports and asked about their parents, one could hear the answer: “Rostov is my dad, Odessa is my mom.” This is one of the versions of the origin of these nicknames. Today, Rostov-on-Don is not included in the list of cities with the highest crime rate in Russia.

The city has more than 800 objects of cultural heritage, including 470 architectural monuments, 55 archeological monuments, 106 monuments of monumental art and military glory. The historic center of Rostov is especially rich in monuments of architecture.

Rostov-on-Don is also one of the largest jazz centers in Russia. In the early 1980s, the country’s first “professor of jazz” Kim Nazaretov opened the department of pop-jazz music at the Rostov Conservatory.

The cathedral is located next to the busiest part of the city center - the Central Market. Stanislavskogo Street, 58.

The questions of our visitors

Rostov-on-Don is among top 10 most criminal cities in Russia. So from this point of view it is not a very safe city. However, if you are concerned about safety during the World Cup 2018, then during this time, special efforts will be made to ensure security, so a visit to the city will be relatively safe.

I would recommend that you still follow such simple precautions as always keep your documents, tickets, cards, cash with you because thefts are still very possible. You should also avoid walking alone in the evening/night time especially not in the central part of the city.

"The Amore Eterno was a 25th anniversary present from my husband [Megha Krishna Reddy] to me," Reddy tells Town & Country . "I designed it along with Farah Khan Ali. The largest of the four heart-shaped diamonds represents my husband, Krishna, while the next one is myself, and the other two adjacent ones represent our sons, Pranav and Manas. The necklace, for me, stands for an everlasting bond of love and connection. I think it matches my heart-shaped ring well and I’m always about the passion and positivity so it’s natural for the hearts to be my favorite designs."

Reddy paired the scene-stealing jewels with a custom ivory silk gown designed by Indian couturier Tarun Tahiliani. The intricate dress was handcrafted, taking more than 4,500 to complete, and perfectly embodies this year's dress code of " The Garden of Time ."

"It was quite an exhilarating experience," says Reddy. "There were over 80 artisans working on putting this ensemble together which for me is a true testament to the spirit of collaboration."

Her dress featured a corseted bodice with a miniature self-portrait of Reddy herself holding a delicate rose, symbolizing the promise of hope and peace, as well as a crystal shoulder accessory created by Miodrag Guberinić, a New York-based designer who has frequently worked with Lady Gaga and Madonna.

Most notably, the bodice was detailed with thousands of French knots, Indian couching embroidery, shimmering silk threads, hand-carved mother-of-pearl flowers to symbolize luminosity and permanence, and 3D butterflies for the cycle of life. Topping off her look, Reddy wore a voluminous cape made of panels of embroidered tulle.

According to Reddy, the entire look was meant to serve as a metaphor for India's artistic revival, "mirroring the nation's current creative and cultural boom and showcasing the beauty and depth of Indian craftsmanship and design."

"The outfit conjures imagery of a blossoming garden, inviting the viewer to embrace authenticity in an ever-changing world," she adds. "A metaphor for India as a sleeping beauty that is reawakening, the outfit celebrates the timelessness of heritage workmanship, transcendence of temporal boundaries and the eternal cycle of renewal and regeneration."

This was Reddy's second time attending the Met Gala. The businesswoman, who has long been a proud supporter of the Met Costume Institute and the museum's South Asian arts programming, previously attended the 2021 event celebrating the In America: A Lexicon Of Fashion exhibit. That night, she wore a Falguni Shane Peacock creation.

"I love the gala's theme and went all out on it," Reddy says of this year's Sleeping Beauties event . "[I was] truly a walking garden, inspired by the Greek Goddess Artemis!"

How a Physics Professor Helped Shape Interdimensional Travel in 'Dark Matter'

B lake Crouch isn't a scientist, but that didn't stop him from including real scientific theories in his bestselling novel Dark Matter and the Apple TV Plus sci-fi thriller based on it. One theory that really stuck with him was that of alternate universes.

"I got really turned on by the idea of multiple realities and more so the science behind it," Crouch told me in an interview. "I [thought] it would be really cool to write a novel about quantum physics."

Crouch said he didn't take any science or math courses in college. So to incorporate quantum physics into the book and show, he worked with Clifford Johnson, a physics professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. I talked with Johnson about the physics behind the fiction.

"It really is a compelling story all about the choices we make in our lives," Johnson said. "It's a real pleasure to see that much science upfront, and so I helped [Crouch] develop a lot of the ideas."

The main theory Dark Matter explores is that of the multiverse: the theory that there are infinite other universes beyond our own. To explore this theory, the show uses an interdimensional travel device called "the box."

The box is a hefty contraption that might not be as visually appealing as similar devices in other works of science fiction, like Back to the Future's DeLorean or Dr. Who's Tardis, but there are real theories behind how it might work. Who knows, maybe these theories will lead to breakthroughs in the world of physics, or maybe they already have in another universe.

How does the box work in Dark Matter?

Dark Matter's box is an example of an interdimensional travel device . According to TV Tropes , these kinds of devices allow a person or group of people to travel to another universe. That journey starts with the box.

In Dark Matter, characters enter the box -- which blocks out everything from the outside -- and take a mind-altering drug. Our characters then imagine the reality they want before exiting the box to a different universe. Johnson explained that the box is a way to visualize all possible outcomes for a superposed quantum state.

OK, explain it to me like I'm five, please

An easier way to understand this, and superposed quantum states, is by using the famous Schrödinger's cat thought experiment.

The gist of the experiment is you put a cat in a sealed box that you can't see into, along with something that can kill it, like poison or radioactive material. Then, because you can't interact with what's inside the box or see whether the item in the box killed the cat or not, you can't observe whether the cat is dead or alive at any given moment. Therefore the cat is both at the same time -- it's in a superposition of both dead and alive. Only after you've opened the box and observed the cat can you report on the cat's state.

Johnson said that the cat in the experiment has two possible outcomes -- alive or dead -- but when a person enters the box in Dark Matter, they have many outcomes they can choose from. Dark Matter's box is in essence the inverse of Schrödinger's cat. Instead of an observer not being able to see or interact with a small portion of reality, the observer can't see or interact with anything outside of a small portion of reality (the box).

So, the way the Dark Matter box works is that a person enters it, imagines the reality they want to be in with the help of a drug and then exits the box to the reality they constructed with their mind. While the person is in the box, they put themselves in a state of superposition among all the different realities, and the one they focus on becomes real once they observe it by leaving the box.

Could the box really work?

Maybe, but we may never know. Some people have posited theories on reality similar to those posed in Dark Matter.

"The guys who won the Nobel Prize for physics in ['22] were talking about nonlocality and the idea that objective reality doesn't exist," Crouch said. "There's no independent reality that is just hanging out there without conscious, biocentric beings observing it."

Others have said similar things. Robert Lanza , an adjunct professor at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, developed a theory of biocentrism that argues that consciousness is the driving force behind reality and the universe, not the other way around.

"Nothing has existence unless you, I, or some living creature perceives it," Lanza wrote in the American Scholar in 2007 . "The images you see are a construction by the brain. Everything you are experiencing right now… is being actively generated in your mind."

The biggest obstacle to proving these theories is building a device like the box. Crouch and Johnson both said designing the box was a challenge since it had to block out everything -- and I truly mean everything -- for a person to be in superposition.

"Things like temperature, anything above absolute zero," Crouch said. "Or neutrinos flying through our atmosphere, constantly flying through our bodies… Variations in wind, temperature, all these things…"

Any shifts in these variables would cause the box to simply be a hunk of metal since those shifts would act on the person inside the box, taking them out of a superposed state.

"We've never built anything like that and it's not clear that we really can," Johnson said. "But it's fun to imagine what that might look like if you could."

Are there any other ways to get to alternate universes if they exist?

If entering a state of superposition to enter into another reality seems a little too far out there, perhaps a black hole can help. This might sound as fantastical as Dark Matter's box, but renowned physicist Stephen Hawking entertained the idea. Hawking theorized that a black hole could function as a passage to somewhere else, including another universe.

"They are not the eternal prisons they were once thought," Hawking said in a 2008 lecture . "Things can get out of a black hole, both to the outside, and possibly, to another universe. So if you feel you are in a black hole, don't give up. There's a way out."

We don't know for certain what would happen if a person fell into a black hole, but Gaurav Khanna , a physics professor at the University of Rhode Island , told me in an interview that a person might be able to survive the encounter.

Khanna and a team of researchers found that if a person, or spacecraft, fell into a supermassive black hole, like Gargantua in the film Interstellar or Sagittarius A* in our own solar system, it might be a smooth and steady ride.

"While we don't know what the other side of a black hole connects to," Khanna said, "If we make a leap of faith and envision that the other side of a black hole connects to another part of our universe, or perhaps another dimension, then you could smoothly, without much discomfort, go from one to the other."

Khanna said that a black hole must meet three criteria for it to possibly function as a portal: it has to be considered supermassive, it has to be old and it must be rotating. If a black hole doesn't meet those requirements, like it's too small, well…

"The smaller [the black hole], the worse it's going to be," Khanna said. "Even if you go to a black hole the size of our sun, I don't think there's any hope of surviving."

So we could travel to other universes with the right conditions?

"This is not a blueprint on how to travel to other worlds," Crouch said. "This is a speculative idea that says, 'Oh if we had a few things, a few advances in these certain areas of technology, then perhaps we can start having a conversation about how macroscopic objects exist in a state of superposition.'"

If traveling to another universe by getting a person into a state of superposition like in Dark Matter proves unreliable, a supermassive black hole might do the trick.

"The door's open a little bit," Khanna said. "We have some understanding, experimentally, that this could actually work."
