Alli and Bennett were amazing. We had a party of 11 that showed up at the water park at 2 p.m it started pouring ( tornado in area ) that day at 3 ish, they refunded us our entire entry fee with no hassle. Great people they are.

They are not joking when they say it's the largest water park in the state. Once you think you're done with one side of the park, take the wrap around train to the other side and enjoy another few hours worth of rides. We went on Sunday midday and there were no lines whatsoever. A very clean water park with an enchanted atmosphere. Brush up on your children's fantasy stories! *Most rides require a walk up a steep incline and several staircases. Tubes are available around the park.

I recently had a birthday bash party for a friend of mine. We had 15 people in our group. With the package, we were supposed to have a meal plan and other amenities. We had several in the party informed that the food was not included and several people had to pay. I had paid for a group of 15 and 2 cabanas for a meal plan 15 as well as a party pack. We got plates and napkins... for what I don't know because you're not allowed to bring food from outside of the park. Party favors for 15, cute but not really age appropriate for a 31 year old. The park was good, but not too many lines wait time was just around 20 minutes. One raft ride was down for repair. The circus was just ok. The place needs an over haul to bring it out of the 80s.

They shut down park at 1:30pm and when I asked to speak to manager about getting tickets to come back another day was told I could not. At almost $50 a ticket and the fact they took away coolers and stuff you think they would be a little more customer friendly to get return business. Bought two pizza and wing deals as well. Spent around $400 for 6 of us to only get 3.5 hours of actual park time. Customer service is a joke and very disappointing on what's supposed to be a family friendly park.

Well since i'm from the south i'd give it a 3. I came during summer time and totally didn't expect it to be like kinda in the woods and so it was 71 out to me that was pretty cold and i mean personally i got a weird vibe being there i think it was the fairytale area but it was. nice park and no long lines they said it was heated water but it wasn't but it was pretty good but you could probably find somewhere better

It so much fun there. They have many great water slides. I love the one that drops you down.

Fun in the sun. Get wet. I have been coming here since I was a kid. The place offers somthing for my kids and offers somthing for myself. Please get a pic with Paul Bunyan on your way into the park. I've been doing it for years I love every bit of this park. Now that I'm older the lazy river is all I need on hot days. But the kid in me needs to feel the rush of the big slides. They have somthing for everyone here. This is mainly a water park with a few dry rides. They also have a little story book walk with thungs like the Cinderella and hansel and Gretel. The staff are excellent. They are freindly and helpful. The park is well kept and clean. I'm very happy they keep this place up I plan on coming when I am a grandparent and getting my picture taken with Paul Bunyan.

I remember spending every summer here as a child so i was delighted to bring my daughter here on a family road trip! She had the best time! The souvenirs were severely lacking- im wondering if it is because of covid but as a kid i remember so many branded trinkets- we would have spent SO much more money had they had some more fun/better options!!

We just got home from spending the day here. We had our family and my sister, her husband and her kids. Every employee was super friendly. We didn't bring any food in so bought lunch, cost was less then we expected for a water park and tasted yummy! We had such fun that our car was one of the last ones left in the parking lot on our way out. The employee at the exit, Leanne, was super nice to us and told us to have a great night, which after spending the day working we were surprised how pleasant she was. I'm sure I would have been counting the minutes to leave work. Highly recommend this place for a fun family activity.

Water Safari New Rides 2021

An Enchanted Time at Water Safari – Old Forge’s Awesome Water Park

Last updated on August 11, 2021.

It’s no secret that the Adirondacks is one of my absolute favorite places on this planet. If you’ve been following along on Instagram , you’ll see it’s been full of mountain views lately! Every summer growing up my parents would take my brother and I camping up at Old Forge. Some of our favorite childhood memories were made in days at Enchanted Forest Water Safari exploring the storybook area with our best friends. In the evenings we’d return to our campsite to watch out for bears (no joke). Water Safari is not only the biggest water park in New York state, but it’s rated one of the best in the country . It’s also one of TripAdvisor’s top choices! Intrigued? I bet you are. Find out what makes Water Safari in Old Forge one of the best summer destinations.

Me at Enchanted Forest

This article was originally published in 2019. In 2021, Enchanted Forest Water Safari invited me to come back to check out the new water slides and update the article. Thanks, Water Safari!

How to Save Money at Water Safari in Old Forge

Purchase your ticket at a local business.

By buying your ticket ahead of time, you’ll be able to save over $7 off your admission! You can find pre-sale tickets at local grocery stores like Price Chopper and Wegmans.

Get more than a day’s visit with the Siesta Pass

If you arrive at the park after 3pm (or 2pm on the days they close earlier), you can pay admission for the remainder of the day and get a FREE pass to return again the next day . Best. News. Ever. My recommendation? Arrive after that cut-off and enjoy all of the dry rides. Then, return in the morning to spend the day by the pools sunbathing and getting soaked on the wet rides! No worrying about changing your clothes or having enough time to fit it all in.

Book a Stay ‘N Play Package

The Water Safari Resort has two accommodations available. If you’re looking to spend a few days in Old Forge (which I highly recommend), check out their Stay ‘N Play Packages . Guests who stay at either of the properties receive discount tickets to the park.

First up is the Water’s Edge Inn across the street from the park. Guests receive free continental breakfast, have access to an indoor pool and sauna, and can relax on the lakefront property in the evening. Plus, you can actually walk across the street to the park – it’s super convenient!

A little down the road you’ll find Old Forge KOA , where I always camped as a kid. There are a variety of tent sites, cabins, and cottages to choose from depending on your style. The resort also offers a shuttle bus to take you to and from the park, so you don’t need to worry about parking.

Enchanted Forest Water Safari

Join the Paul Bunyan Club

While you’re at it, make sure to take your photo with Paul Bunyan. Yes, it may be cheesy. Yes, a group of us 30-somethings looked like a giddy bunch of children getting our photos taken. But I don’t regret it for one minute! As soon as you enter the park you’ll see the giant statue of Paul Bunyan, and it is the must-have photo opportunity of the park.

For an extra $4 with your first visit this year, you can join the Paul Bunyan Club . As a member, you’ll receive half-off your admission for the rest of the season. Half-price tickets must be purchased at the admission gate.

Get a season pass

If you plan on visiting on at least 3 different days during the summer, it’s worth it to get yourself a season pass. That will get you unlimited admission for the season and 10% off food and drinks in the park.

What Is There to Do at Water Safari in Old Forge?

Before you do anything at the park, get yourself a splash card . These new cards act like your cash inside the park, so you don’t have to worry about carrying around actual cash or a wallet. Plus, the cards are waterproof, so you don’t have to worry about them on the wet rides.

Second, if you want to take photos and videos on the water rides, grab a waterproof phone pouch from any of the gift shops in the park. They seriously work wonders!

Lastly, if you brought a bunch of stuff into the park with you – and chances are you’ve got at least a bag with a change of clothes and towels – get a locker. That way you can stash your stuff in a locker and go enjoy the rides.

The Dry Rides

My favorite? The classic Skyride – take the ride up and get relaxing views of the whole park! But you’ll also find the traditional ones like the bumper cars and tilt-o-whirl. The wet rides are what really shine! (Also why the siesta pass is a great option!)

The Wet Rides

This is where Water Safari does it best! Believe it or not, there are 33 heated water wides ! The most popular is definitely “Curse of the Silverback”, a group ride where your tube circles around a giant funnel like a toilet bowl. And then – drop! For a relaxing day, you can choose from two different lazy rivers – the “Log Jammer” and “Safari River Expeditions”. Plus, there’s everything in between! Races, wave pools, single riders, partner and group tubes… Enough to fill your whole day!

While the park was closed in 2020, they built three new water rides . The lines may be long, but they are definitely worth it.

  • Serengeti Stampede replaced the old, basic racing slide. The new, colorful slides have bumps and turns to make them a lot more fun. And the new mats have handles, making them easier to hold onto.
  • Mamba Strike is a 285-foot drop water slide that loops around the Serengeti Stampede tubes. This slide has guests stand on a platform at the top of the slide that is dropped beneath them. An adrenaline rush for sure!
  • Killermanjaro is back and better than ever. The speed slide features one long 207-foot drop.

Relive your childhood with Storybook Lane

Another one of my favorite childhood memories is visiting all the nursery rhyme recreations! And you can bet that I did that again on my most recent visit. From Cinderella’s pumpkin carriage to Hansel & Gretel’s gingerbread house, they are over 20 stories recreated along a path through the woods in the park. Meant for the children to visit in awe, but reminiscent for the adults as you listen to the stories play.

Friends at Water Safari

Family Circus

Twice daily you can watch the circus show. From the standard jugglers and trapeze artists, you’ll also find more unique acts like performing dogs and the famous motorcycle cage rider. It’s a great chance to catch a break from all the adrenaline of the day. Grab a snack and find a seat while you enjoy the show.

Play with the animals

Are you an animal lover like me? Then check out Paul’s Barnyard to play with and feed the sheep, goats, pigs, and birds that are there. I recommend going in between some of the dry rides!

Water Safari Circus

Where to Eat at Water Safari

Water Safari is one of the most lenient places when it comes to bringing in outside food and beverages. BUT, why worry about lugging around your cooler and finding a place to store it while you’re in the water? There are plenty of restaurants and snack stands throughout the park. So there are plenty of options to please any palate.

Options include pizza, nachos, burgers, chicken sandwiches, salads, and more. A staff favorite is the Bosco sticks at the pizza shack. Get two cheese-filled breadsticks served with marinara for just $3. New this year, you’ll find ice cream nachos, monster milkshakes, and hot honey chicken sandwiches.

And to answer your most burning question – yes, there are alcoholic drinks for adults!

Water Safari Restaurants

Other Things to Do in Old Forge

While you’re visiting Old Forge, be sure to get the most out of your stay.

Calypso’s Cove

Enchanted Forest Water Safari claims it’s “Where the fun never stops!” And that’s true! Even outside the park, you can continue your adventure – next door at Calypso’s Cove . From mini golf and batting cages, to an arcade, go karts, and more, you’re sure to have a blast.

Slicker’s Restaurant

After a long day at the water park, you’re sure to be hungry! Luckily, there’s a hometown favorite restaurant across the street – Slickers. Their pizza and chicken wings are fantastic. Seriously. So. Darn. Good. Get yourself some garlic parm wings and you’ll be in heaven.

Slickers Restaurant

Adirondack Dog House

If you’re really pinching your pennies for this trip, you can’t go wrong with a visit to the Adirondack Dog House . Hot dogs with all sorts of toppings, french fries and onion rings? Delicious. Classic. And cheap. Score!

Fulton Chain Craft Brewery

What’s dinner without a beer? A visit to Fulton Chain Craft Brewery is a must. Adirondack-themed and dog-friendly, you won’t want to miss drinking their famous “Go Fluff Yourself” beer. Weird name? Yes. Delicious? Heck yes. It’s a peanut butter marshmallow beer that has become very popular in Central New York – for good reason!

The brewery was recently expanded to make a larger taproom. All of their brew tanks are named after the lakes in the Fulton Chain of Lakes throughout the Adirondacks. They also have pictures of the lakes on them, embracing their location.

Fulton Chain Craft Brewery

Wisk Baking Co

You know I’m a sucker for a good coffee shop and bakery. Wisk isn’t that. Wisk Baking Co is an incredible coffee shop and bakery! Featuring a variety of delicious confections, the desserts are almost too beautiful to eat! Almost.

You’ll have a hard time choosing from the bagels, croissants, muffins, and more. Get yourself a slice of cake to go. I’d also recommend the “ADK Campfire” crepe, made with Nutella, Fluff, and graham crackers!

Have you visited Water Safari in Old Forge? I want to hear about it!

African Safari

The term safari typically evokes images of dusty African savannahs and bouncy 4×4 rides in pursuit of the iconic Big Five—lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and African buffalo. While this classic game-drive ritual has its place, a different breed of water-based adventures is gaining momentum.

In Africa, swapping wheels for hulls can save time. In Rwanda, for instance, traveling aboard the Kivu Queen uBuranga , the first motorized houseboat on Lake Kivu, cuts travel time for gorilla trekking jaunts in the Volcanoes National Park or searching for chimpanzees in the Nyungwe Forest National Park. Both would take many hours by car. Plus it’s just a much more pleasant way to travel.

In other parts of the world, the only way to see marine wildlife is by boat. “Cruises are great for visiting more areas and seeing a variety of landscapes,” Allie Almario, the Galapagos and Amazon safari expert at Philadelphia-based Premier Tours, told Robb Report. “ Going by boat in the Amazon, for example, allows you to navigate the tributaries easily for access into some of its most remote areas.”

We’ve curated our favorite water trips to animal-laden lands, whether it’s traveling in a houseboat or go-anywhere expedition vessel, drifting along rivers or cruising to the world’s most remote polar regions. Accommodations range from intimate five-star island hideaways to brand-new superyachts to more communal, high-end river boats. What they share: A wildlife-focused itinerary that not only provides opportunities to witness water-dwelling species but also the diversity of fish and underwater mammals and wide-ranging bird species, all from the comfort of a luxurious floating camp.

Here are 12 of our favorites.

Botswana, Sitatunga Island

water safari pictures

The latest in Great Plains’s water-based reserve collection, this private island camp is surrounded by waterways can be accessed only by boat or helicopter. Sitatunga Island blends traditional safaris with boating, thereby elevating the freedom and peacefulness of observing the Okavango Delta’s primal residents. Gliding along in the 22-footer motorboat or mokoro—a traditional dugout canoe—covers more ground, while delving deeper into the landscape. In the new five-star resort, four opulent wooden suites (one a very large double) are equipped with poster beds, open screened sides that offer exceptional wildlife viewing, espresso machines, wine and liquor, plunge pools, and Peloton bikes. Each suite also has a professional camera for capturing hippos, elephants, crocodiles, and hundreds of exotic bird species. Add to that gourmet meals, exceptional service, and halcyon sunsets over the Okavango River, and this could be the most exclusive water safari in Botswana. Surrounding camps from other providers such as Jao, Xigera, and Vumbura, also embrace a similar ethos, combining land and water safaris. Best time: low season (October through February). Cost via Premier Tours : $13,690 per person, including all internal flights and helicopter trips to and from the island. Travel to/from Botswana not included.

Costa Rica, Cocos Island, ‘SuRi’

water safari pictures

Cocos Island, flung 340 miles off Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, has lush mountainous landscapes, countless waterfalls, intriguing cloud forests, and an ocean full of incredible diving. It’s so wild, in fact, that it inspired Jurassic Park. While you won’t find any T-Rexes, park rangers keep an eye on the several species that call the island home. But most of the wildlife is in the ocean, including marine mammals such as humpback whales, sea lions, and bottlenose dolphins. The shark-infested UNESCO waters are best explored aboard the 208-foot explorer SuRi , which offering a nature-themed itinerary from diving with marine biologists alongside the sharks, manta rays, and turtles to kayaking with dolphins to secluded beach hikes among vast bird species. Outfitter Cookson Adventures  also offers hands-on involvement with conservation projects, such as geotagging whale sharks. Best time: June-December. Cost without airfare: Private charter. from $350,000 per week.

Antarctica, ‘Hanse Explorer’

water safari pictures

Uninhabited by humans but filled with wildlife, the vast white continent provides an incomparable polar experience. Bypassing a long cruise through Drake Passage, EYOS offers the option to fly in to join the 156-foot, ice-classed Hanse Explorer for traversing the continent’s most remote waters. The vessel’s six staterooms allow a group 12 to venture into the ice with expert guides. Penguin colonies, whales breaching across the yacht’s bow, and herds of seals offer some of the best polar experiences available. After excursions and, of course, the requisite polar plunge, guests can warm up in the Finnish sauna and then enjoy more sea views from the sundeck Jacuzzi. Best time: November-March. Cost without airfare: Private charter from $235,000 per week.

Galapagos Islands, ‘Stella Maris’

water safari pictures

Straddling the equator, the Galapagos Islands promise year-round, water-based wildlife adventures. The volcanic archipelago is home to species found nowhere else on Earth, from blue-footed boobies and giant land iguanas to Galapagos penguins and hundreds more. A visit aboard superyacht  Stella Maris will let any visitor realize how Charles Darwin came up with his theory of evolution by natural selection. The 164-footer has seven well-appointed cabins for relaxing between island visits. Cruising amid the wild things—which change dramatically from island to island—offers a slew of activities, from trekking alongside giant tortoises to tender rides through mangroves to hanging out underwater with boisterous sea lions and hammerhead sharks. The yacht’s guides understand the diversity of the islands, unveiling each creature’s history. Best time: December-May. Cost without airfare: Aqua Expeditions can arrange a full-yacht charter from $218.500 per week.

Norway, Svalbard, ‘Scintilla Maris’

water safari pictures

Frozen for months but passable from April to August under 24-hour daylight, this archipelago is abundant with Arctic wildlife. The unusual 150-foot Scintilla Maris , recently converted from a Damen trawler vessel, is the ideal launch pad for Svalbard. Its seafaring capabilities let it weave into the ice floes of this archipelago. Wildlife highlights include seals, reindeer, arctic fox, and the main attraction, the polar bear. They can be viewed up close from the Zodiacs or from heated seating in the yacht’s dedicated observation area, 39 feet above the water. The boat’s vibration-free hybrid propulsion extends the comfort while in electric-only mode, creating a tranquil environment for wildlife encounters. These waters are also a crossroads for multiple whale species, making whale watching one of the highlights. Best time: May-August. Cost without airfare: Pelorus-arranged private charter starting at $160,000 per week.

Australia, Great Barrier Reef, ‘Beluga’

water safari pictures

The world’s largest coral-reef system reveals an aquatic ecosystem that is best explored by water, thanks to 9,000 species below the surface. Though the Great Barrier Reef is experiencing significant environmental challenges, much of it remains a treasure trove for snorkelers and divers. The 113-foot Beluga takes up to 10 guests throughout June and July to the only place one can swim with dwarf minke whales. The yacht has a 40-foot chase boat, aptly named Minke, with ten sets of dive gear. The crow’s nest at the top of the yacht is the perfect place for more whale watching under way. Best time: November-April. Cost without airfare: Ocean Alliance charter from $75,000 per week.

Borneo, Sabah, ‘Kudanil’

water safari pictures

Teeming with life, Sabah’s east coast is one of Southeast Asia’s top wildlife-watching destinations. Superyachts aren’t just for the ocean here: An animal-centric itinerary onboard the 164-foot Kudanil , cruising into the navigable Kinabatangan River, presents some of the world’s rarest species. The river bank includes wild orangutans, the almost extinct Borneo pygmy elephant, the proboscis monkey, and many reptiles and birds. Back in the ocean, as a dive and surf vessel, Kudanil can extend the trip, heading to Sipadan for world-class scuba diving. Best time: May-October. Cost without airfare: Pelorus -arranged private charter from $161,000 per week.

Alaska Inside Passage, ‘La Datcha’

water safari pictures

Along the scenic, remote Inside Passage, wildlife encounters in Alaska are the norm, from wild mink, brown bears fishing for salmon, and harbor seals to pods of orcas and humpback whales. The 252-foot expedition yacht La Datcha offers flexible itineraries through these waters, focusing on the wildlife but also showing the best of the fjords, dramatic island bays, and remote areas that would be otherwise inaccessible except for an explorer vessel of this caliber. Its designated expedition room is filled with specialized gear for onshore and tender excursions. La Datcha ‘s helideck and enclosed hanger also allow exceptional wildlife-viewing far above water levels. Best time: June-August. Cost without airfare: Private charter from $940,000 per week.

Botswana, Chobe River, ‘Zambezi Queen’

water safari pictures

Winding through Africa’s wilderness is the Chobe River, this tributary of the Zambezi gives a different perspective of life on the plains. Especially if you’re aboard the Mantis Collection’s 138-foot Zambezi Queen houseboat. If it isn’t impressive enough to see Africa’s wild creatures on land, this vessel lets you wake to leopards drinking and elephants bathing from one of the 14 suites’ private balconies. Tenders bring the action closer for water-based game viewing and, if you’re so inclined, the vessel offers angling for local gamefish. A birder’s paradise, this area of Botswana is home to over 450 bird species. After a day of wildlife spotting, the vessel offers gourmet African-themed dinners. Best time: June-October. Cost without airfare: Luxury suite (per person, per night sharing) $932.

Botswana, Chobe River, ‘Chobe Princess’

water safari pictures

Mantis also offers smaller vessels within its portfolio for a more intimate experience of the Chobe River. Moored on the Namibian side, Chobe Princess is part of a trio of similar houseboats available exclusively for families or private parties, with two offering four suites and five in the third. Cruising along the Chobe National Park, the floating safari provides ideal viewing of this game-dense area, with fishing, photographic safaris, birding, and cultural tours. The boat also has a plunge pool and beautiful views. Best time: June-October. Cost without airfare: Luxury suite (per person, per night sharing) $716.

Peru, Amazon, ‘Delfin I’

water safari pictures

Aboard the 67-foot Delfin 1 , eight guests gain exclusive access to the world’s largest protected flooded forest—Peru’s Pacaya Samiria National Reserve—accessible only by boat during the rainy season. Navigating through the watery wilderness, the basin’s showstopper is the mystical pink river dolphin found only in these waters. From the shaded observation deck or one of the four plush private-suite terraces, the land also reveals sloths, capybaras, and pygmy marmosets. Night-time safaris via tender reveal the jungle’s nocturnal transformation with black caimans, bats, frogs, and other nocturnal creatures lining the shores. Delfin Cruises partners with local guides to benefit Amazonian communities. Best time: November-May. Cost without airfare: 5 days/4nights, Deluxe suite, $6,500.

Rwanda, Lake Kivu, ‘Kivu Queen uBuranga’

water safari pictures

The Kivu Queen uBuranga has recently pioneered motorized yachting on Lake Kivu’s waters. The lake is a gateway to Rwanda’s kaleidoscopic biodiversity, though it won’t have the big game like northern Botswana. Besides the overarching sense of tranquility, exploring by boat considerably reduces travel times for gorilla trekking jaunts in the Volcanoes National Park or searching for chimpanzees in the Nyungwe Forest National Park. Going by boat is also much more pleasant than having to wander on dusty, remote backroads. Onboard, one can relax in one of the 10 cabins, kick back in the lounge, or unwind in the wellness center. Best time; June-September. Cost without airfare: Mantis -arranged travel: 2/3 night stays (per person/per night/sharing) from $1,500.

Explore Africa through its lifeblood

water safari pictures

Every river has a character, and every waterway symbolises vitality. Life in Africa revolves around its rivers, streams and lakes, defining the essence of the wildernesses they flow through. A safari can be more than game drives, so why not opt for one of the continent’s numerous water safaris and explore Africa through its lifeblood?

Below is a list of our favourite water-based safari destinations.

Want to go on a water safari? Browse our African safaris on offer here .

water safaris

Okavango Delta, Botswana: Water safari by mokoro

The swampy wildlife oasis of the Okavango Delta is one of the most extraordinary safari destinations in Africa, and a ride in a mokoro is an essential part of any exploration. These traditional dugout canoes cut silently through the wetlands’ many channels, propelled by expert guides’ poles. Aside from the peaceful immersion in one’s surroundings, this is the perfect way to encounter wildlife – from elephants to frogs and everything in between.

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe and Zambia: Rafting on Batoka Gorge’s white waters

At Victoria Falls , the mighty Zambezi River plunges 100 metres off a basalt plateau before being forced through a narrow and twisting path of Batoka Gorge. The rapids below the falls are classified as Grade V and are widely acknowledged as offering some of the best white water rafting in the world.

Adrift on inflatable rafts, armed with just a plastic oar and a lifejacket, visitors throw themselves at the river’s mercy. Nothing is quite as humbling as experiencing the sheer power of a churning river (especially while underneath it). And after the rather steep climb out of the gorge on somewhat shaky legs, a sundowner imbibed looking out over the “smoke that thunders” is a must! This is one of the most epic water safaris you’ll ever experience.

water safaris Victoria Falls

Jinja, Uganda: Kayak the Nile

The Nile River is the longest in the world, and its journey begins at the edge of Lake Victoria as it spills out of the lake into a series of plunging rapids. Not much compares to the thrill of riding the tumbling waves, pitting skill against the tremendous power of the torrent. And there are plenty of long flat stretches of calm water to steady the nerves, recover the muscles and marvel at the beauty of rural Uganda.

If this sounds too much (or perhaps when one’s shoulders and arms have had enough), opt for an ice-cold drink on a sedate sunset boat cruise.

water safaris Nile River

Chobe River, Botswana and Namibia: Cruise on a riverboat

The Chobe River is Africa’s elephant Eden , its lush floodplains and surroundings home to the world’s highest density of these magnificent pachyderms. This corner of the continent is renowned for its water safaris. Explore the various channels and side creeks or meander peacefully, watching elephants snorkel and wrestle in the water. From predator to prey, the abundance of life on display along the riverbanks tinges any voyage with more than a hint of excitement.

water safaris - Chobe

Lake Tanganyika, Tanzania: Float or dive lazy waters

Only two parks in Tanzania offer chimpanzee trekking: Gombe Stream and Mahale Mountains National Parks, and both are found on the banks of Lake Tanganyika. The terrain of these parks is mountainous, and if the chimps are particularly capricious, a trek might entail several hours of strenuous hiking. As such, there is no doubt that the only way to celebrate a successful day is to leap with joy into the cool embrace of the clear waters of the world’s longest freshwater lake. Sandy beaches are perfect for lazing the days away or soaking up romantic sunsets. Or, to make the most of a water safari at Lake Tanganyika (which hosts over 350 fish species), explore the waters by diving or snorkelling.

water safari pictures

Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe and Zambia: Explore vast shorelines

The fertile shores of Lake Kariba and its fresh waters attract diverse birdlife and wildlife, including elephants, buffalo and various antelopes. Keep an eye out for lions and leopards too. Lake Kariba’s water safaris can be enjoyed in simple pleasure or luxurious style. Dozens of lodges perched on the water’s edge allow you to awaken to the copper glow of the sun rising over the endless lake. Spend the day admiring the scenery or watching elephants browse the shoreline of Lake Kariba. And at the end of the day, the calm waters are the ideal place to admire the starlit skies. There are plenty of opportunities to explore the shorelines from the water, whether on a catamaran cruise, motorboat or even a houseboat.

water safari pictures

Lake Malawi, Malawi: Barefoot safari

Lake Malawi offers a plethora of fun for every intrepid safari goer, from the super active to the deeply relaxed. Across the shoreline of Lake Malawi , tiny beach villages and lodges offer many opportunities to explore the waters – above or below the azure ripples. Boat trips provide the perfect vantage to appreciate the lake’s blazing sunsets. Snorkel or dive beneath the surface to take in the fishy kaleidoscope darting around the rocks in the shallows. Sailing and kayaking are at the top of the list for those eager to investigate the various bays and coves along the shoreline. And for beach lovers, there is ample opportunity to lounge along Lake Malawi’s sandy shores and breathe in the crystalline waters, drink in hand.

water safari pictures

Storms River Mouth, South Africa: Adventure in the breakers

Along the ocean’s edge in the Tsitsikamma section of Garden Route National Park , a microcosm of adventure can be found within a rocky ravine where breakers pound rocky shores beneath rolling forests and fynbos. Here, 5kms of sea, reefs and ocean life around Storms River Mouth are protected by the national park. Mere metres from where dolphins romp in the waves and southern right whales visit, thrill-seekers can negotiate the narrow passages of the magnificent Storms River Gorge by kayak, c liff jump into secret pools, lounge on a raft or hop aboard a lilo to float on cool waters after a long day of activity.

water safari pictures

Lake Kivu, Rwanda: Kick-back, beach style

There are plenty of active ways to entertain oneself on a visit to Lake Kivu, from water sports to birding. But why not embrace the Caribbean-like tropical atmosphere of this Great Lake, and take a few days to kick back and relax on sandy shores? Besides, it is the perfect spot to let it all sink in after a life-changing trek with gorillas in nearby Volcanoes National Park.

Texas Water Safari Statement on Salli O’Donnell

On June 8 th through 12 th the 61 st Texas Water Safari was held with 159 boats competing and 109 finishing the race. On the fourth day of the race (Tuesday, June 11 th) the Texas Water Safari banquet was held. A few minutes before the awards were to be presented, the Texas Water Safari Board received a formal protest regarding an infraction that occurred during the race.

The infraction involved boat number 5353 paddled by Salli O’Donnell. Ms. O’Donnell received a spare paddle from the bank and used it during the race. The infraction was readily admitted by her team at the time. This infraction is expressly prohibited by Texas Water Safari rules as only water, ice, food and medical supplies can be obtained from Team Captains during the race. Safari Board members that investigated the infraction during the race, proposed a one-hour penalty based upon the limited facts they had at that time.

“5d. All supplies, equipment, and items of repair must be in the possession of each team and listed on the check-in sheet at the beginning of the Safari. Nothing may be purchased by or delivered to an individual or team during the entire Safari except as stated under Section 4d.

4d, iv 1. No paddles, lights, repair equipment, or any other supplies or Materials may be provided to the paddlers.”

Once the formal protest was filed at the Texas Water Safari Banquet, the Safari Board discussed all the information that had been provided and a revised penalty of 24 hours was assessed.

Due to the penalty, the sequence of awards that were laid out on the awards table had to be completely changed. During the awards ceremony the Board failed to mention the penalty and even announce that Ms. O’Donnell had completed the race. This was our mistake, it was not intentional and we apologize to Ms. O’Donnell.

Further, the failure to mention Ms. O’Donnell during the awards ceremony was not intended to discredit her or to embarrass her in any way. The Texas Water Safari awards banquet is a celebration of each paddler’s great achievements, and we apologize for not recognizing Ms. O’Donnell’s achievements. She is one of the finest paddlers in the sport and she is an inspiration to us all.

“They don’t call the Texas Water Safari The World’s Toughest Canoe Race’ for nothing. In addition to the length, the challenges include whitewater rapids, multiple portages, and the relentless, soul-sapping Texas heat. Competitors have four days and four hours to paddle from San Marcos, in the center of the state, to the shy little town of Seadrift on the Gulf Coast. There is no prize money for the winners; just Texas-size bragging rights for the finishers.” Larry Rice, in July 2009 Canoe & Kayak Magazine

The Texas Water Safari is actually comprised of several events including an information seminar, two short races (one of which can be considered as a preliminary race) and of course, the Safari itself – the 260 mile race to Seadrift from the headwaters of the San Marcos River. The Safari itself, billed as the "World's Toughest Boat Race", is an annual race via the San Marcos and Guadalupe rivers, from Aquarena Springs in the college town of San Marcos, to the shrimping village of Seadrift on the Texas coastline, a total distance of 260 miles. The first official race was held in 1963, and is run annually on the second Saturday of June.

The primary requirement is a boat powered only by human muscle. Racers must take all equipment needed with them, receiving only water, ice and food along the way.

Making a splash: Readers tackle the challenge of photographing water

Portrait of Clifford Oto

Water is the stuff of life and living.

It quenches our thirst and we literally can only survive a few days without it. We water our gardens, yards and crops with it. Water can be used for recreation activities such as swimming, boating and fishing as well as providing habitat for wildlife.

All of these things make water a perfect subject to the latest Readers Photo Challenge and readers were up for it. Fifty-three photos were sent in from 10 readers. Here are the top picks.

First place goes to Moris Senegor of Stockton for a photo he took while on a trip to Bergen, a city of the North Sea in Norway. Senegor was up around midnight he decided to get a shot of the city’s coastline.

At this time of year, Norway experiences very short nights of about five hours long. Despite the late hour, it was still during the so-called “blue hour” of dusk after the sun has set but there is just enough light to imbue everything with a patina of blue.

Senegor set up his Nikon D500 DSLR camera on a tripod for a timed exposure. He captured a rich azure sky as it soars overhead and artificial lights illuminating city buildings with a warm glow. Both blue sky and the golden lights of the city are also reflected in the water together.

Bonnie Huggins of Lathrop gets second.

She visited Trinidad State Beach along California’s north coast in Humboldt County. In a pool left by a low tide, she photographed a starfish partially exposed by the receding water while clinging to a rock with her Nikon D3500 DSLR camera.

The starfish’s pale orange color contrasts nicely with the darker, surrounding neutral tones.

Third goes to Evan DeChance of Stockton.

With Sony a6000 digital mirrorless camera he photographed a mallard hen as it swam along the shoreline of the lagoon at Oak Grove Regional Park in Stockton. It was during sunset but the park’s surrounding tree line blocked most of the light throwing part of the lake into shadow. Except a spot of light shining through a break in the trees like a spotlight highlighting the duck and its reflection in the water.

While kayaking on Lodi Lake with her daughter Beriah, Cynthia Barker of Stockton photographed an unusual encounter with wildlife.

A deer appeared among the vegetation along the shore and entered the lake and began swimming across. Barker and her Canon EOS Rebel T3 DSLR camera captured the deer navigating the lake as her daughter looks on in the background.

After watering plants in her garden Bettina Engelman of Stockton grabbed her camera. She noticed water drops clinging to a spider web suspended between two tall zinnias.

Equipped with a 90mm macro lens, she used her Sony A7II digital mirrorless camera to photograph a close up of the drops glistening like tiny jewels.

For first place Senegor receives a 16x20 print from UlmerPhoto and a $25 gift card to a local restaurant. Huggins gets a 11x14 print for second and DeChance wins a 10x10 print. All of the entries can be seen in an online gallery at recordnet.com. A new challenge will be issued on Aug. 20.
