The boardwalk in Asbury Park with morning sun and shadows

The quintessential beach town: Asbury Park, New Jersey

Just over an hour’s drive

We’ve long held the opinion that the classic Jersey Shore town, Asbury Park, doesn’t get enough attention . Super accessible from the city, it’s just an hour and fifteen minutes by car on the Garden State Parkway, and only thirty minutes longer if you're traveler from Penn Station on a Bay Head-bound North Jersey Coast Line train. From Asbury Park’s bustling boardwalk to its famous mile-long beach, this town offers the perfect blend of relaxation and action. Experience the exciting local food scene by making stops at Reyla (for Mediterranean small plates) or beachside coffee shop Asbury Park Roastery. Consider staying at the Asbury Ocean Club, Surfside Resort and Residences for an elevated beachside experience or the eclectic Asbury Hotel , which has the perfect rooftop.

The suburban sanctuary: Fairfield County, Connecticut

About a one-hour train ride via Metro-North

When you’re pressed on time and need a low-key break from the city, do as commuters do and escape to the ‘burbs. Hop on the Metro-North New Haven Line out of Grand Central and take an hour train to one of Fairfield County's numerous charming towns and cities. From coastal enclaves like Greenwich and Westport to more wooded areas like New Canaan and Wilton, the variety of Connecticut's suburbs may surprise you. Fairfield County doesn’t claim the tri-state’s best beaches, to be sure, but there’s plenty of summer fun to be had along Long Island Sound: take a kayak, sailboat, or ferry between the Norwalk Islands, stroll down one of the area’s many public beaches , or savor local seafood (be sure to order a round of Copps Island oysters) at Knot Norms , Rowayton Seafood , The Whelk , or L’Escale . There’s outdoor attractions beyond the beach, too: New Canaan’s Grace Farms, Stamford’s Cove Island Park, and Darien’s newly-opened Great Island offer acres of walking paths and recreational space. Book a stay at the Inn at Gray Barns or the Delamar Greenwich Harbor hotel, or rent a cozy Airbnb to truly settle in—without settling down.

The rural retreat: Manchester, Vermont

About a four-hour drive (or bus)

When you feel the need to go off-the-grid, the Green Mountain State is always a good idea for a long weekend in nature—whether you’re after winter snow or fall foliage. The idyllic town of Manchester located nearby Stratton Mountain Resort allows for just the right amount of isolation where you can relax in peaceful solitude without sacrificing top-notch restaurants, shopping, and human interaction (should you desire). Pro tip for the driving-averse New Yorkers out there: the Hampton Jitney runs a winter route between NYC and Manchester from December to March, departing on Fridays and returning each Sunday (fares start at $69). Stay at local establishment The Equinox , or drive a few towns over to exciting newcomer The Weston .

The historical jaunt: Boston

About a four hour train ride via Amtrak Acela

New Yorkers and Bostonians may go head-to-head at times, but if you’re looking for a change of scenery without giving up your cosmopolitan comforts, a weekend trip to Boston might just be what the doctor ordered. The Amtrak Acela departing from Penn Station clocks in at just under four hours, arriving at South Station between downtown Boston and the waterfront. Upon arrival, walk along the cobblestone streets of the Freedom Trail and duck into some of the country’s finest restaurants, bars, and historic sites along the way. Take in the architecture of Boston’s South End or explore neighboring communities Cambridge and Sommerville . There’s no shortage of great hotels in Boston —old or new—making the classic New England city an ideal weekend excursion for every type of traveler.

The good-time island: Fire Island, New York

About a two-and-a-half hour drive, plus a 30-minute ferry ride

An all-time favorite summer escape, and one that is especially important to NYC’s queer community, is Fire Island. With its many towns and beaches, each boasting their own local flavor, the Long Island barrier island makes it easy to choose the spot to match your vibe. A few popular spots: Cherry Grove is a fun-loving party destination, Kismet is known for its nightlife, and Fire Island Pines is an affluent community with a dining and shopping scene and some of the island’s most expensive addresses. A worthwhile hotel option is the Madison , the boutique bed and breakfast where the cast of Fire Island stayed while shooting the recent film. (A few other spots it featured? The bar Cherry’s which offers harborside drag shows, vintage shop DENIZEN , and the Belvedere Fire Island , a palatial resort for gay men.)

The city break: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

About a two-hour drive; about an hour and fifteen minutes via Amtrak

It may be obvious, but it’s too easily forgotten by New Yorkers: the easy urban getaway to nearby Philadelphia. The city is budding with things to do, whether you’re in search of great new restaurants, fantastic art exhibits, or just a change of pace. A few of our favorite to-dos in Philly include visiting the Philadelphia Museum of Art, followed by the perfect cheesesteak at John’s Roast Pork . Betsy Blumenthal, former Traveler features editor—and resident Philly expert—recommends the city’s Four Seasons for its spectacular aerial views of landmarks like Independence Hall. (For even more destination tips, check out our comprehensive Philadelphia city guide. )

Best NYC Weekend Getaways The Hamptons

The posh beach hang: The Hamptons

About a two-hour drive

For many, the Hamptons conjure visions of Upper East Siders summering in their mansions, and flitting between high society parties. A weekend is the perfect stretch of time to slip into that whirlwind before letting the city ground you once again. Classic to-dos like visiting the Pollock-Krasner house in East Hampton (open May to October), designer shopping in the villages, and waterfront dining are always a good idea, as are summery outdoor activities. Pedal around the Atlantic Avenue Beach area with a bike rental from Amagansett Beach & Bicycle Company , savor a hefty lobster roll at the Dock House in Sag Harbor, or find inner peace in bird-filled Hither Hills State Park . A classic East Hampton stay, the Maidstone Hotel is the perfect place to post up (if you don't have an invite to one of the aforementioned mansions, that is).

Best NYC Weekend Getaways Marthas Vineyard

The eclectic island: Martha’s Vineyard

A five-hour ferry ride

Sometimes an island is the best escape. Martha’s Vineyard, with its lighthouses , arcades and carousels, sandy shores, and vast landscapes fits the bill. To get there, take a five-hour Seastreak Ferry from Midtown Manhattan, fly from JFK airport, or drive to Falmouth, Massachusetts (about 4.5 hours), and pay for overnight parking before grabbing the 30-minute ferry from there. The colorful, fairytale-ish town of Oak Bluffs is one of our favorite East Coast beach towns ; there, an ideal spot to post up is Summercamp Hotel . Deeper into the island, stop at Aquinnah, which feels martian-like with its clay-red lighthouse and cliffs.

Best NYC Weekend Getaways The Finger Lakes

The wine tour: The Finger Lakes

About a four-and-a-half-hour drive

New York’s biggest wine region offers plenty of options for sampling its famous riesling—but wine tasting is hardly all the area has to offer. The adventurous can pencil dive into a gorge or wade under a waterfall. Or stay above water: Canandaigua Sailboard offers paddleboard yoga , kayaking, and windsurfing. Between four and five hours from New York City , the Finger Lakes are just far enough to be a true escape. From Ithaca to quaint Skaneateles, there are a number of places that make for an ideal home base. Boutique hotel Argos Inn in Ithaca is one of them. We love the romantic renovated mansion for the original art prints in each room, some by Salvador Dalí.

Historic Mystic Seaport in Connecticut just seconds after sunset

The nautical overnight: Mystic, Connecticut

About a two-and-a-half hour drive, three hours by train via Amtrak

Mystic’s maritime history gives this town a classic New England feel. Even today, it remains recognizable by the boats that sail the Mystic River and Long Island Sound. History buffs can immerse themselves in the lore with a visit to the Mystic Seaport Museum , where there are reproductions of the Mayflower II. For another take on all things aquatic, visit the Mystic Aquarium , where African penguins waddle and Beluga whales swim. Enjoy the charm of eateries like Nana’s Bakery and Pizza , which mills its own flour, as well as the Oyster Club for fresh and locally-caught fish. Stay a night or two at the Whaler’s Inn , which has historical pull (it’s been around since 1818), yet was renovated in 2021. Its modern comforts include four-poster beds, gas fireplaces, water views, and an excellent farm-to-table restaurant, the Shipwright’s Daughter .

Castle Hill Lighthouse in Newport Rhode Island

The classic coastal destination: Newport, Rhode Island

About a three-hour drive

There’s so much to see in Newport , one of New England’s most storied summer towns. Do up your weekend T-Swift-style with winding coastline drives, half-pound lobster rolls, and wanderings through Gilded Age summer “cottages” as they were called in the 1920s. During the day, take in sweeping Atlantic Ocean and mansion views on the famed Cliff Walk or boogie board at First Beach. Then, when it starts to get dark, visit the Roof Deck at the Vanderbilt hotel for a sunset drink. For a luxury stay, consider spending a couple nights at the aforementioned Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection . If you’re looking for a homey group spot, check out this two-bedroom cottage a few steps from the beach. However you do it, it'll be easy to see why Newport is one of the best weekend getaways from NYC.

Best NYC Weekend Getaways Cold Spring NY

The quick camping trip: Cold Spring

About an hour-and-a-half train ride or drive

For an easy camping trip that doesn’t require a car, your spot is Fahnestock State Park . The campsite is near the Cold Spring stop on the Metro-North’s Hudson line—a short Uber ride covers the gap from the train station to the park itself. Squeeze everything you need for a night or two into a backpack , and relish in the empowerment and self-sufficiency of being 100% mobile. The hiking trails that run through the park connect to the vast Appalachian Trail, which touches 14 eastern seaboard states from Georgia to Maine . Besides hiking, the park has a beach on Canopus Lake, and fishing on four ponds and two additional lakes. On your way home, stop at Hudson Hil’s for a decadent brunch in the town of Cold Spring (we’re eyeing the Creole omelette) then walk to the train. If you’re looking to expand your journey throughout the region, there are many towns to love and explore in the Hudson River Valley area, including Beacon , Hudson , Kingston, and Rhinebeck.

Beautiful Lake Placid in Autumn

The off-season gem: Lake Placid

About a five-hour drive

Better known as a winter destination , Lake Placid, home of the 1980 Winter Olympics, has a wealth of outdoor recreation in the summer months, too. At glassy, serene Mirror Lake, visitors can paddle out on canoes and kayaks . On the Brewster Peninsula Nature Trails, hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers will pass the shimmering lake, cedar trees, and a population of otters. The Olympic sites include the magical Cloudsplitter Gondola ride, a rifle range, a glass elevator, a speed skating oval, a zip line park, the Herb Brooks Arena, and the Lake Placid Olympic Museum. If you're craving some time indoors, don't fret: The area’s old-fashioned movie theater at Tupper Lake Municipal Park, Adirondack State Theater, is currently screening One Life. Bed down at Lake Placid Lodge , a former summer camp .

Sunset at a view looking out

The mountain escape: The Berkshires

About a three-and-a-half hour drive

The Berkshires , in western Massachusetts and northwest Connecticut, is one of those places that offers entirely different types of trips with every passing season. In the summer, the region is known for the anticipated Tanglewood season, in which the Boston Symphonic Orchestra and Boston Pops take residence and perform. In the fall, visitors can drive through some of the world’s most vibrant foliage along Route 2 and 7. Come winter, cold-weather sports are on offer—whether you’re looking to downhill ski or snowshoe. With the thaw of spring, hikes with waterfall views are easy to find at Bash Bish Falls State Park. Year-round, the food and drink scene won’t disappoint either: For an artisan cocktail after the sun goes down, visit Berkshire Mountain Distillers ; to enjoy a plate of shrimp gumbo, visit Nudel ; and to savor the notorious local cheeses, visit the North Adams’ Farmers Market. As far as hotels go, we have a few ideas. Restorative Canyon Ranch, Lenox is a six-time Readers’ Choice Awards winner, while Miraval Berkshires is one of New England’s largest and most renowned spas.

Best NYC Weekend Getaways Lake George New York

The great outdoors: Lake George

About a three-and-a-half-hour drive

Set in the Adirondacks in upstate New York, Lake George offers lots of open space and a slower pace of life. Take in the natural beauty with a scenic drive on NY-9 or NY-418, admire falcons at Bolton Landing, or shack up in a tent at the Lake George Island campsite . Other summer outdoor activities include fishing, cycling down the Warren County Bikeway, and golfing at the breathtaking Top of the World course. Boathouse Bed and Breakfast is the only B&B located directly on the lake , and has the most serene water views.

Best NYC Weekend Getaways North Fork NY

The peaceful spot: North Fork, Long Island

For a low key Long Island alternative to the Hamptons, the bucolic North Fork and adjacent Shelter Island are what you're after. Head first to Greenport, North Fork’s largest town which is known for its marinas, fishing boats, neighboring vineyards, and blooming fields of lavender in July. Sound View Greenport is our pick for where to stay in town. Their fisherman-and-farmer-forward restaurant the Halyard is open, too—don't sleep on the summer truffle and fresh cavatelli. Then, take the ferry from nearby North Haven to Shelter Island, where you'll find hiking trails, osprey, and salt marshes at the Mashomack Nature Preserve, and even more land to explore on the protected beaches or in the acres of forest. If you are strategic about avoid common travel times (Friday evening out of the city, Sunday evening to return), you can be in North Fork in just two hours, making it a surprisingly quick weekend getaway from NYC.

Best NYC Weekend Getaways Woodstock NY

The artist’s haven: Woodstock

The best place to start in Woodstock may be the slopes of Overlook Mountain. The limestone peak, full of red oaks, firs, and (keep your eyes peeled) timber rattlesnakes, features some interesting ruins, like the eerie remains of Overlook Mountain House, which brought tourists to the Catskills in the 19th century and sits just south of the Overlook fire tower. If privacy is what you’re looking for, you might consider this bright and airy studio loft decorated in a farmhouse style. While you’re there, scoop up quality produce at Sunflower Market , or if you don’t want to turn on an oven in the summer heat, snag a table outdoors at Phoenicia Diner . The cult favorite is a treat for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Highly recommended: the Phoenicia Smash sandwich (beef griddled into caramelized onion, mustard, mayo, New York cheddar, and pickles on a Brioche bun).

15 Fun Weekend Getaways in Idaho to Take in 2024

weekend getaways in idaho

Idaho is a beautiful state to explore, and there’s nothing like booking a vacation to visit a new area. There are so many weekend getaways in Idaho to go on, whether you’re looking for a family-friendly place to take your kids or a couple’s getaway to a more secluded area.

I’ve been visiting Idaho as a weekend trip away from Seattle since I was in elementary school, but there are still so many parts I want to go to. I always make sure to stop here when I do a cross-country road trip, such as my Seattle to Yellowstone road trip .

That’s why I started this list to share some of the best Idaho weekend getaways you can start planning for your own vacation. Whether you want an adventure-filled getaway or a quiet weekend to relax, there are plenty of options to choose from.

Table of Contents

Tips for Planning an Idaho Weekend Getaway

Here are a few tips to make your vacation easier:

  • Book your hotels in advance – Some of the places on this list are small, which means the accommodation there will fill up quickly. Idaho is a popular place to visit both with locals and tourists during the summertime, so book your hotels at least several months in advance.
  • Prepare if you don’t have service – Larger cities like Boise have no problem with cell service, but some of the more remote getaways might have no or spotty service. I recommend downloading a map on your phone in advance so you don’t suddenly lose the directions to your accommodation.
  • Check in advance for closures or special hours – Many businesses have closed over the past two years or significantly reduced their hours due to staff shortages, so double-check the places on your itinerary first so you won’t be disappointed.
  • Confirm places are pet-friendly – Many people like myself have dogs they like to vacation with, so confirm that your accommodation is a pet-friendly PNW vacation so there are no surprises.

15 Weekend Getaways in Idaho to Plan For Your Next Escape

There are quite a few stunning locations in Idaho. Whether you’re looking for ski resorts, lakeside holidays, or the ultimate in luxury for you and your travel team, it’ll be here. Keep reading to find 15 of the best destinations for weekend getaways in Idaho.

1. Sandpoint

Lake Sandpoint Idaho USA

If you’re looking for cheap weekend getaways in Idaho with a touch of luxury and all the leisure, Sandpoint is a great place to start. This beautiful location rests on Lake Pend Oreille and is a fitting location for couples, solo campers, and everything in between. This city is ideal if you want a long road trip from Seattle .

Imagine waking up with views of the Selkirk and Cabinet mountains as well as a couple of delightful natural attractions that make each season worth the visit.

Spend your weekend rocking the 70 rides and slides at Silverwood Theme Park or be slightly more mature at the Arts and Crafts Fair or the Northwest Wine Fair. You can also enjoy a good biking trail to pump those heart muscles.

Regardless of your favorite things to do, there are options for everyone on one of the most adventurous Idaho weekend getaways, whether you love shopping, fishing, hiking, biking, camping, glamping, skiing, museums, etc.

Where to Stay

  • Best Western Edgewater Resort: This gorgeous resort offers galore amenities with an on-site restaurant just one minute away from the beachfront. Rates start at $240 per night.
  • Cedar Street Hotel & Suites : This hotel is perfect for daytime fun and nights spent with a cocktail in hand around the corner from Lake Pend Oreille. Rates start from $114 per night.

Wallace

Whether it’s a honeymoon skiing throughout the day or fun family games around a fire, you’re in luck regardless of your ideal vacation.

Wallace is located in the Idaho panhandle and is best known as the mining town with the most silver – or the center of the universe, depending on your social circles. Statistically, it is the largest silver producer in the USA.

However, the center of the universe claim is slightly less factual, despite the manhole cover that celebrates it. In 2004, the mayor dubbed Wallace the center of the universe “because it can’t be proven not to be”.

While this place displays some whimsy, it is an excellent location for adventures like the Sierra Silver Mine Tours, Silver Streak Zipline, and a dip into the Pulaski Tunnel Trail. Walk through the Mining Museum or Oasis Bordello Museum for a simpler stay.

Fun fact – if the town looks familiar, it’s because they filmed the 1997 movie Dante’s Peak here, which I was so excited to find out about (one of my favorite movies when I was younger!). You can walk around to see recognizable parts, making it one of the best things to do in the Pacific Northwest for movie lovers.

  • Wallace Inn: Wallace Inn is close to Lookout Pass and Silver Mountain Ski Resort, making this a comfortable location for all skiers. Rates start at $103 per night.
  • FairBridge Inn & Suites Kellogg : An indoor pool and comfortably furnished rooms are necessary to make you feel at home. Rates start at $115 per night.

Idaho McCall Snow Road

McCall is an excellent location for just about anything. While it is relatively common amongst couples for obvious reasons, it is also a spectacular place to attempt or master as many outdoor activities as possible.

Situated around the corner of Lake Payette, there are tons of water activities to explore. You could also settle into the hot springs for a refreshing dip or explore more of the Ponderosa State Park.

There’s a winter carnival for those lucky enough to be there in the wintertime and a ski park at Brundage Mountain Resort.

This old logging town has the highest snowfall average in the state – so why not try your hand at skiing while you’re there. If you’re looking for some more adventure, you can head out to the outdoor recreation center, as it’s perfect for adventure enthusiasts.

  • Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites McCall : The Hunt Lodge, an IHG Hotel: A hotel right by the beach and Ponderosa State Park. Rates start at $200 per night.
  • Third Street Inn : 3 Star hotel with hot tub, indoor pool, and a great location. Rates start at $130 per night.

4. Coeur d’Alene

Coeur d’Alene

As far as getaways, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, is possibly one of the most luxurious places out there. With the Coeur d’Alene Resort right there, a range of trails and lake cruises, what better place to take your friends and family out to? The area is also one of the most romantic getaways in Idaho, and many people include the city on their road trip around the PNW .

Head over to the Coeur d’Alene Resort for a day of golf, spa treatments, and a dip in the infinity pool. The resort is the biggest drawcard in this region; the area itself has tons on offer.

You can head out to the Museum of North Idaho, jet off to trails in Canfield Mountain, or find the trailhead to Tubbs Hill and spend the day exploring.

This beautiful region offers a little bit more as well, with nightlife scenes featuring good music, live bands, casino games, and even brewery tours to try out the latest in craft beers.

  • Coeur D’Alene Casino Resort Hotel : This beautiful resort with on-site restaurants, a casino, and a golf course is for anyone that doesn’t want to lift a finger. Rates start at $100 per night.
  • Comfort Inn & Suites I-90 City Center : Here, you’ve got all the necessary amenities to ensure that you’re comfortable while being close to many major attractions.  Rates start at $120 per night.

5. Sun Valley

Sun Valley Trees

There are a couple of unique places to stay in Idaho, like the Kentwood Lodge or Wood River Inn. Each offers all the amenities needed to enjoy a comfortable stay in Sun Valley.

This resort town is best known for areas like Bald Mountain and Dollar Mountain, where skiing is the order of the day. But, luckily, it is not all you can get up to here.

Is it the soft white snow that you are after? You can try snowshoeing, watch a couple of ice shows, or ski. But on the off chance that you’re there with minimal snowfall, you can also try your hand at fly fishing, tennis, horse-riding, and bowling.

Regardless of what you’re looking for, there are activities for everyone, and it covers a little bit of everything. Sun Valley is the ideal location for a weekend getaway if a range of activities is what you’re after – the more to do, the better.

  • Best Western Plus Kentwood Lodge : This traditionally styled and comfortable lodging is about seven minutes from KetchamTown. Rates start at $260 per night.
  • Wood River Inn & Suite : Modernity and old-school comfort come to order at this quaint Inn. Rates start at $138 per night.

6. Fish Haven

Fish Haven

If you’re especially fond of nature and love seeing conservation in practice, Fish Haven is a special place to be for Idaho weekend trips. It was initially named Rush Creek, but the loving local community renamed it. While this isn’t the most prominent scene for extreme sports and adventure, it is an idyllic and surreal location for everyday bird watchers.

For a cheap weekend getaway, spend your time marveling at the bluer than blue waters of Bear Lake. Trot about the gift shops such as The Jailhouse or explore Minnetonka’s mysterious caves and caverns. You can also get teed up for a round of golf and learn as much as you can from the history museums.

The bird watching, scenery, and regular hiking trails make this location ideal for explorers. The curious mind will find tons to satiate as you tread through the science behind the incredibly blue lake or go biking between the bushes.

  • The Bluebird Inn : Wake up to beautiful views entangled in comfy sheets, and kick start your day with a healthy breakfast at this welcoming inn.

Winter Cabin in Snow

This unique location is at the heart of Nez Perce Indian Reservation and is surrounded by mountains, rivers, trees, and just about covers your daily dose of nature. Like many small towns, it is a gorgeous, welcoming place to be with a ton of friendly locals to help you out as you go along.

You can spend the day cruising along an ATV/UTV trail on land or explore the location by boat. Between hunting, hiking, and fishing, you’ll have a jam-packed weekend with a mixture of serenity and fun. It’s also ideal for couples looking for romantic getaways in Idaho.

As you fall in love with the small-town charm, don’t forget to check out some of the other locations within Clearwater County. Head out to Weippe, Pierce, or Elk River for some extra added fun.

As you can imagine, the biggest drawcard in this part of Idaho is the sense of community. Since there are so many activities and events happening in and around the county, you may want to check in advance for particular events and festivities happening in the area.

This location makes for some of the best romantic cabin getaways in Idaho, so it’s a great spot to take your significant other.

  • Best Western Lodge at River’s Edge : Guests can enjoy the usual creature comforts, an indoor pool, and spectacular river views. Rates start at $130 per night.

Athol

Athol is for you if you’re particularly fond of serenity, silence, and general rural and raw nature when deciding on weekend trips in Idaho. Athol is an old historic city that makes for a fun spot for unique weekend getaways.

Here, you’re a stone’s throw away from state parks like Round Lake and Farragut – each of which is unique in its own way. Explore Farrugat’s camping options or the 40-mile hiking trail, or head to Round Lake for some fishing fun.

Athol is at the southern end of Lake Pend Oreille and is covered in farms and forests. The location is perfect for a quiet, undisturbed hideaway from the hustle of big city life. When you’ve had enough peace and solitude, you can always head over to the Silverwood Theme Park for a little bit of adrenaline.

Athol has a unique history, too, although the natural beauty of it all is far more enticing.

  • Cedar Mountain Farm Bed and Breakfast LLC : This cozy spot is perfect for old-school, log cabin-style housing.  Rates start at $260 per night.
  • New Athol Motel: This motel in Athol offers mountain views and lakeside living for affordable prices without compromising comfort.  Rates start at $113 per night.

Tipi Glamping Victor Idaho

Victor is the largest city in the country of Teton, and you’ll be blissfully renewed by the clean air. Since most of this space is covered in National Forests, you’d be delighted to know that there are trails upon trails available for you to explore during one of the more outdoorsy weekend getaways in Idaho.

Some fun places to stay in Idaho are either blanketed in snow or water, and this specific location is swathed by indigenous wildflowers and wildlife alike. Choose your favorite way to explore, whether it be via bike, by foot, or on horseback, and enjoy everything the Grand Teton National Park (with its many Grand Teton hikes ) and Yellowstone have to provide.

While you’re there, you’ve got to try out some of the delicious delights from restaurants like Victor Emporium or Big Hole BBQ Victor. Start your day with a Gingerbread French Toast from Butter Cafe and end it with Knotty Pine’s all-American beef burger.

  • Cobblestone Hotel & Suites features an indoor swimming pool, fitness center, and everything you need to feel at home.  Rates start at $290 per night.
  • Teton Valley Motel : This motel includes the basic amenities for on-the-go travelers.  Rates start at around $140 per night

10. Meridian

Not everybody is lucky enough to have a getaway without kids or without having to check in at the office over the weekend. If you’re looking for a Pacific Northwest kid-friendly vacation that allows you to work and spend time with your family and an opportunity to stay in touch with work, Meridian, Idaho, has all fronts covered.

While this may not be a cheap weekend getaway, it can still be one of the best weekend getaways in Idaho. Meridian is known as the second-largest city in Idaho (after Boise). Here, you’ll find some excellent water parks and kids’ activities that will have them excited.

The family can focus on the Roaring Springs Water Park and Wahooz Family Fun Zone. There are also children’s museums in case of inclement weather or the Boise River Greenbelt for the adventurous clan.

  • Courtyard by Marriott Boise West/Meridian is decked out with southwestern decor and the facilities you need to work from home while maintaining the appropriate holiday vibe after stepping away from the desk. Rates start from around $189 per night.
  • Hampton Inn & Suites Boise-Meridian : Lavish, luxe, and worth all of the big bucks. Possesses the ideal business luxury environment.  Rates start from around $200 per night

11. Twin Falls

Shoshone Falls Twin Falls Idaho USA

A Twin Falls vacation is one of the best weekend getaways from Boise when you want stunning views. Here, you’re delighted by views from every angle and a wide range of places to pop the question or take adoring pictures of you and your beau in Instagram-worthy positions.

Not only can you check out places like Snake River Canyon and Perrine Bridge, but you’re also privy to some exciting opportunities to explore Sawtooth National Forest. Whatever location you choose to do first, there are options on how to go about it – as usual, hiking, biking, and horseback seem to be the fan-favorite.

Twin Falls is a lovely spot for families and adrenaline junkies as well. Alongside the natural romantic atmosphere, there’s a daredevil nature to be explored as well.

If you’re looking for an adrenaline boost, the Shoshone falls are the ideal location to try (or witness) BASE jumping . Since BASE jumping is illegal in US National Parks, your opportunities are pretty limited, but this is one location that seems pretty worth it.

  • Holiday Inn Twin Falls : The Twin Falls Holiday Inn is ideal for busy travelers and has a business center and laundromat available.  Rates start at $214 per night .
  • La Quinta by Wyndham Twin Falls : Ideally located, wonderfully decorated, and affordably priced, the La Quinta hotel offers guests an excellent place for luxury and romance.  Rates start at $322 per night .

Rigby is one of those unassuming little towns that doesn’t seem to offer much but packs a punch. While you’re here, you could stop by the Yellowstone RV Park or visit the Jefferson County Lake and golf course.

Rigby is surrounded by lakes and trees and makes for a beautiful nature retreat, which makes a great place to unplug, unwind, and meditate – if that’s what you’re after. Most people prefer to jet off to Idaho Falls as well. Since it is pretty centered, traveling around this quaint town isn’t too tricky.

  • Motel 6 Rigby: It’s close to Idaho Falls and other wonderful locations like Lexburg, Lorenzo, and Idaho Falls Regional Airport. Rates start at around $53 per night.

Boise Idaho Hot Air Balloons

Boise is by far the most popular in all of Idaho when it comes to Idaho weekend getaways. Whether you’re keen to try out the Bogus Basin or check out some of the Art Museums, there is something here for everyone. Its diverse cultural contributions like the Basque community, regular Shakespearian plays, and contemporary art exhibitions add a unique experience.

Why not take your partner through various hiking trails or even to Hell’s Canyon. Grab a light picnic and take in the beautiful imagery from the waterfall cascading down. This is also a popular long weekend getaway from Portland .

Check out the World Center for Birds of Prey, take part in a Boise scavenger hunt, and explore most of the city excitingly and uniquely. You’ll spot places like the Old Idaho Penitentiary, Freak Alley Gallery, and maybe the Idaho State Capitol Building.

  • Red Lion Inn & Suites Boise: The Red Lion Inn is just around the corner from the airport and provides airport shuttle services for weekend getaways from Boise. Rates start at $160 per night.
  • Hyatt Place Boise/Downtown: If you’re hoping for a little bit more luxury, Hyatt Place is ideal. Rates start at $239 per night.

14. Cascade

There are very few affordable hotel getaways as wonderful as Cascade, Idaho. You’re close to the very best amenities and facilities in this quaint town for one of the more affordable weekend getaways in Idaho.

The biggest drawcard is the Lake Cascade State Park, where you can explore campgrounds and a couple of bodies of water. If you’re looking for something slightly more adventurous, try the Payette River Flier.

Either way, this rural city of Cascade offers travelers four seasons’ worth of beauty, fun, and activities worthy of your weekend getaway. You can try mountain climbing or kayaking in summer or explore the natural hot springs in Fall.

Winter offers sleigh rides and tubing, while spring is perfect for mushroom foraging.

  • The Ashley Inn : This beautiful inn is especially ideal in location, especially if you’re looking to be near the best activities like golf courses and parks. Rooms are available from $169 per night.

15. Fort Hall

Dirt Road Idaho

Fort Hall is best known for the casino but wows visitors in other regards as well. Here you can expect to level up your cultural knowledge and history at the Shoshone Tribal museum. Or take some time to fish for your wellness at the Portneuf Wellness Complex.

You can also check out the Pocatello Idaho Temple if you enjoy architecture. Once all of that is done, you can head back to the casino and check out some live shows and fascinating entertainment.

If you love clear skies, open roads, and a handful of fun activities immersed in nature, Fort Hall is an excellent addition to your bucket list.

  • Shoshone Bannock Casino Hotel : Live in leisure and style with the traditional casino-style rooms. Book your rooms early in advance as they tend to have wonderful specials and discount opportunities throughout the month.

The best weekend trips in the U.S. for 2024

The best weekend trips in the U.S. help you see the country one unexpected destination at a time

Virginia Gil

We love a European vacation as much as the next person, but perhaps less so these days. Despite the many flash sales luring us abroad, there’s just too much to see and do right here in America. The rise in low-cost airlines expanding their routes throughout the U.S. has also refocused our wanderlust, nudging us toward short escapes closer to home. And with limited time and budgets, a weekend getaway in the U.S. is just the vacation we all need right now.

Our picks bypass the obvious choices, say New York or L.A., in favor of smaller cities with booming art scenes, lesser-known towns with incredible restaurants and coastal spots with plenty of room to spread out on the sand. You’ll find fewer crowds and plenty of small-town charm at these unexpected destinations. Looking for someplace to go in 2024? These places should absolutely be on your travel radar this year.

RECOMMENDED: The best cities to visit in the U.S.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

Best weekend trips in the U.S.

1.  cape may, new jersey.

Cape May, New Jersey

Fun travel fact: “America’s Oldest Seashore Resort” can be found on the southern tip of the Garden State. Yes, Cape May is technically on the Jersey Shore but it’s the antithesis of the Jersey Shore you see on MTV—in lieu of Snookie sightings, nightclubs and tanning parlors, you’ll find Victorian mansions, horse-drawn carriages, gas-lit cobblestone streets, blooming hydrangeas and a famous lighthouse.

So why should you visit Cape May? Most people will tell you the long stretches of beaches and colorful architecture alone are reason enough to come. But locals will opine it’s about the passionate community, walkability to everywhere, the parks peppered with grandiose trees, bangin’ local music scene, mom-and-pop shops, the Coast Guard base, well-manicured lawns, family-owned restaurants, impeccable homes and its charm. Cape May is also a gourmand’s dream where perfectly seasoned, fresh-caught seafood dots the menus of all the town’s best haunts.

Where to stay: If modern and minimalist are your vibe, look no further than La Mer Beachfront Resort . The family-owned property recently underwent a major renovation and the hotel offers the island’s most swanky accommodations, swathed in beige and white hues and replete with traditional-yet-contemporary furnishings.

Don’t miss it: The Lobster House is Cape May’s most popular restaurant and the dining experience here beside the Fisherman’s Wharf is a must. Order a cold beer with steamed Maryland crabs and fried clams dockside and soak in the sights of the wharf.

Nearest airport:  Atlantic City International Airport (ACY)

2.  Burlington, Vermont

Burlington, Vermont

Burlington’s charm as a waterfront university town is well known, but with two Vermont chefs and eateries in the running for the 2024 James Beard Awards, it’s a necessary getaway for food and drink lovers. From pastry chef Amanda Wildermuth’s tahini sundae (think sesame caramel and crumbled halva) at the Eastern Mediterranean-influenced Honey Road , to spicy brussels sprouts with a cult following (hello, citrus-garlic chili sauce, golden raisins and sunflower seeds) thanks to chef Mojo Hancy-Davis’s farm-to-table menu at May Day —plus a rotating selection of craft beers from the small experimental brewery Foam Brewers —Burlington’s restaurant and bar scene is bustling.

Where to stay: Rustic ski lodge meets bougie boutique property at Hotel Vermont , where wood-burning fireplaces, stone walls and views of Lake Champlain are the perfect backdrops for sampling the hotel’s long list of craft beers and cocktails.

Don’t miss it: The killer onion soup and maple creme brulée at Leunig’s , Church Street’s iconic bistro.

Nearest airport:  Burlington Airport (BTV)

3.  Bentonville, Arkansas

Bentonville, Arkansas

More than 100 miles away from a major city (if you can call Tulsa, Oklahoma that), you'll find charming Bentonville, Arkansas at the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. The birthplace of Walmart (by way of Sam Walton’s first Five and Dime, opened in 1950) has flourished beyond its retail reputation, becoming a destination for art enthusiasts, cyclists, and curious travelers interested in an equally charming and albeit less crowded, alternative to nearby Southern capitals.

Your weekend in Bentonville, which celebrates its 150th anniversary , starts with the familiar—a visit to downtown’s Walmart Museum , because why not?—before venturing to the popular: Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art is a sprawling cultural institution whose permanent collection of works spans five centuries and is always free to visit. Plus, its onsite chef offers a host of unique dining experiences.

Then, it’s time to head to the woods. With a trail system that wraps around the museum’s 120-acre park and a host of paved paths throughout the city, Bentonville’s natural landscape is ripe for exploring on foot or two wheels. Airship Coffee at the Coler Mountain Bike Preserve is a delightful open-air cafe where you can power up or cool down between runs.

Where to stay: 21c Museum Hotel  is equal parts boutique hotel and hip gallery with a dedicated exhibition space. Contemporary artworks and sculptures are sprinkled throughout the property.

Don’t miss it:  The Bentonville Film Festival , chaired by Academy Award Winner Geena Davis, celebrates its 10th anniversary this summer. The annual event screens shorts, docs, features, animated movies and more films, focusing on diversity and inclusion.

Nearest airport: Fayetteville, Arkansas (XNA)

4.  Rockland, Maine

Rockland, Maine

This small but vibrant coastal town is quintessentially Maine. Rockland packs a punch with stunning views from its rocky coastline plus cultural offerings and top-notch dining. Art enthusiasts can visit The Farnsworth Art Museum  or the Center for Maine Contemporary Art  while those in search of local bounty can hit up the weekly  farmers' market  and gems like Rock City Coffee . There’s waterfront dining aplenty, but few might think to venture inland to the nationally-lauded Primo . Have a night out at the historic Myrtle Street Tavern, Liberator Brewing Company  or The Strand Theater . As one of the biggest lobster shipping centers in the world, Rockland celebrates the coveted crustacean each August at the hugely popular Maine Lobster Fest . Explore Penobscot Bay on a cruise and you’ve completed a true Maine adventure.

Where to stay: Overlooking the harbor, the luxurious, design-forward 250 Main Hotel  is in the perfect location for exploring Rockland.

Don’t miss it: Walk the mile-long granite breakwater path to the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse for a panoramic view of the city from the water plus the chance to explore the 100+ year history of the lighthouse.

Nearest airport:  Knox County Regional Airport (RKD)

5.  Topeka, Kansas

Topeka, Kansas

As an under-the-radar capital, Topeka’s got a surprising number of hipster brewpubs, including the Blind Tiger Restaurant & Brewery , the Norsemen Brewing Company , Iron Rail Brewing and the Happy Basset Barrel House —which includes an attached dog park and a flamingo scavenger hunt to keep humans entertained between pints. Downtown is walkable, and neighborhoods are parkable with a selection of locally owned eateries like the Blue Moose Bar & Grill . Check out NOTO , the arts and entertainment district with art studios, antique stores and a monthly First Friday ArtWalk. At Gage Park, ride a mile-long mini-train and visit the new giraffe exhibit opening March 10 at the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center . Don your jumpsuit for the Evel Knievel Museum before it moves to Las Vegas, and catch a show at Topeka Civic Theatre , which hosts (they say) the country’s oldest, continuously-running community dinner theater. Topeka was founded in 1854 by antislavery colonists, and the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site commemorates the landmark Civil Rights case that ended legal segregation in public schools.

Where to stay:  The  Cyrus Hotel pairs luxury with Midwest charm in a century-old building with striking city views from upper stories.

Don’t miss it: The capitol with its mural of abolitionist John Brown roaring with his rifle and Bible. Stay downstairs to roll a quarter down the sloping tile tunnel, then ascend to the cupola through a series of terrifying stairs and landings suspended in the middle of the vast dome.

Nearest airport:  Kansas City Airport (MCI)

6.  Mendocino, California

Mendocino, California

Located a couple of hours north of the Bay Area, Mendocino feels like a storybook out of a romance novel. The area blends charming New England architecture with a dramatic California coastline. And Mendocino’s remote nature means it never feels like it’s trying too hard or overcrowded. Imagine charming inns with roaring fires, homemade breakfast, and views of waves crashing on the rocky shore. Restaurants that serve fish caught nearby earlier that day. A quaint downtown with Victorian buildings turned into independent shops. Trails that lead you through redwoods and onto the beach.

Where to stay: SCP Mendocino Inn and Farm , a recently refreshed bed and breakfast that features an 1867 country manor, a modern lodge, adorable onsite llamas and homemade breakfast delivered to your room.

Don’t miss it:  Town favorite   Fog Eater Cafe  is a fully vegan , New Orleans-inspired eatery that draws a crowd.

Nearest airport:  Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport (STS)

— Clara Hogan

7.  Covington, Louisiana

Covington, Louisiana

Just across Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans is the charming city of Covington, where you can discover Louisiana culture at a slower pace. The quaint downtown, dotted with oak trees and historic buildings, is packed with independent boutiques and lively art galleries. Restaurants like Del Porto , Lola’s  and The Gloriette  stand up to the best in New Orleans, and there's no shortage of spots serving up boiled seafood or po' boys. Outdoor enthusiasts can bike the Tammany Trace , paddle the Bogue Falaya River or visit a gator ranch . There’s entertainment aplenty too: spring and fall bring outdoor concerts, the Three Rivers Arts Festival  is a draw in November and monthly block parties from March through October on Columbia Street celebrate what makes Covington unique.

Where to stay: The historic, family-owned Southern Hotel  offers luxurious accommodations, fabulous food and plenty of Southern hospitality.

Don’t miss it: Head to the Abita Brewing Company  for locally brewed beers featuring local ingredients. Take a tour and stick around for a bite, and maybe catch a band at one of the brewery’s frequent weekend events.

Nearest airport:  New Orleans Airport (MSY)

8.  Lenox, Massachusetts

Lenox, Massachusetts

An enchanting New England town tucked away in a particularly gorgeous section of the Berkshires, Lenox is the perfect home base for a trip spent exploring Western Massachusetts. Culture vultures have long flocked to the town thanks to Tanglewood , the summertime home of the Boston Symphony, and the innovative local theater group Shakespeare & Company . Now, upscale accommodations like 33 Main and the recently renovated Cornell Inn are providing a more luxurious mountain escape. (Those looking for true luxury should pencil some time in at Miraval Berkshires .) History lovers can arrange to tour nearby architectural stunners like Ventfort Hall and The Mount , the one-time home of author Edith Wharton. A day spent taking in the past can also be complemented with some more of-the-moment culinary offerings in downtown Lenox, like the intimate wine bar Brava .

Where to stay: The Lenox Collection is a trio of historic inns in the heart of the city.

Don’t miss it: A picnic spent taking in a live concert at Tanglewood is a local tradition for a reason. Check out this summer’s offerings , including highlights like James Taylor and En Vogue (on separate nights).

Nearest airport:  Bradley International Airport (BDL)

9.  Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Tucked in the rolling hills of southwestern Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh offers a getaway combining city amenities, lots of green space and plenty of charm. The city dazzles in the springtime with beautiful parks (meander through Point State Park and visit Blue Slide Park made famous by rapper Mac Miller). On a rainy day, head to The Warhol Museum dedicated to Pittsburgh’s own Andy Warhol. A ride on the incline , a funicular, is a must for a thrilling city view. Eat pierogies (and lots more) at the renowned Apteka , which specializes in central and eastern European cuisine, then grab tiki drinks at Hidden Harbor .

Where to stay:  Kimpton Hotel Monaco  is located Downtown within walking distance of bars and restaurants as well as transit access.

Don’t miss it:  Picklesburgh , this summertime food festival celebrates all things pickled—the weirder, the better. (2024 dates TBA)

Nearest airport: Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT)

10.  Greenville, South Carolina

Greenville, South Carolina

Just one hour from bustling Asheville lies the charming city of Greenville, which tends to fly (mostly) under the radar—for now, at least. Its walkable downtown area is chock-full of quaint shops like the nostalgia-inducing Mast General Store, diverse dining options (ranging from delectable Mexican street food at Pap’s Tacos  to contemporary Italian at Jianna ), and abundant local artwork. We recommend grabbing coffee at Methodical Coffee  and heading to Falls Park on the Reedy , which offers excellent views of the surrounding falls. In the afternoon, refuel with an ice-cold beer at Southernside Brewing Co . as you stroll or bike along the 22-mile-long Swamp Rabbit Trail .

Where to stay: Situated right on the banks of the Reedy River, the luxe Grand Bohemian Lodge Greenville  is the perfect place to stay when in town.

Don’t miss it: Greenville hosts over 300 events each year, including the trademark Fall for Greenville , a three-day festival that puts the city’s many food, drink, and entertainment offerings on full display.

Nearest airport: Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP)

11.  Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

If you like miles of beachfront living, an expansive boardwalk, and an adorable town center with lots of quaint shops, then President Biden’s favorite summer retreat should be yours, too. Rehoboth Beach sits along Southern Delaware’s culinary coast, an area rich in agriculture and aquaculture contributing to the cluster of award-winning restaurants that includes DRIFT and One Coastal , run by James Beard Semifinalist chef 2024 Matt Kern.

Where to stay: Book a room at the waterfront Bellmoor Inn & Spa , an elegantly understated property less than a 10-minute walk from the beach.

Don’t miss it: Dogfish Head Brewery originated in these parts and has sprawled out quite a bit since launching the first brewery in the nation’s first state. Check out the Brewings & Eats in Rehoboth, where you can grab a bite just next door to Dogfish’s original location.

Nearest airport: Philadelphia International Airport

12.  Mystic, Connecticut

Mystic, Connecticut

Mystic, a small coastal Connecticut town once known for its shipyard and seaport, is now a quaint New England getaway full of destination-worthy dining. Metro-North trains directly from New York City and a fully walkable downtown make Mystic an easy weekend getaway, no car required. The scenic walks by the water, small shops and boutiques, plus a longstanding independent bookstore  make for an excellent few days of entertainment between eating pizza at  Nana’s Bakery , noshing on pastries at  Sift Bake Shop , sipping craft brews at  Barley Head Brewery  or slurping up oysters during happy hour at  The Shipwright’s Daughter .

Where to stay:  The Whaler’s Inn , a historic 45-room boutique property in the heart of town that’s dog-friendly and welcomes guests in the lobby with a fireplace, warm beverages and cookies.

Don’t miss it:  Book dinner at  Oyster Club , a locally beloved and owned restaurant serving farm-to-table upscale fare (don’t skip the cornbread with honey butter, or anything with seafood), plus high-end cocktails.

Nearest airport:  Providence T.F. Green International Airport (PVD)

https://media.timeout.com/images/105969575/image.jpg

13.  Kingston, New York

Kingston, New York

Kingston, NY, may have a rich history as the state’s first capital, but it is so much more than its past. Located 91 miles outside of New York City, it offers a fun weekend getaway with great hikes, historic landmarks, trendy stores and hangouts like Milne Antiques and Kingston Standard Brewing Co. , good food at restaurants like Ship to Shore and Lola Pizza , and a robust arts scene centered around the Ulster Performing Arts Center that operates inside a restored 1926 theater. The city is also home to festivals, including the Artists Soapbox Derby (August), and the Trolley Museum of New York , which offers a 1.5-mile ride on weekends and holidays along the Rondout Creek waterfront to Kingston Point Park.

Where to stay:  The  Hotel Kinsley  for a beautiful, historic stay or  the Newkirk , an entire 1856 home you can rent on Airbnb.

Don’t miss it:  Rough Draft , a bookstore and taproom, where you can enjoy a pint with a good book and friends.

Nearest airport: Newburgh Airport (SWF)

https://media.timeout.com/images/106149458/image.jpg

14.  Narragansett, Rhode Island

Narragansett, Rhode Island

The seaside town of Narragansett is just 22 minutes by car from the Gilded Age glamour of Newport, but you’d never know it. Narragansett is beloved for its laid-back and low-key vibes. It’s also a popular spot for surfing, and travelers of all experience levels can sign up for lessons and/or rent gear from local businesses like Narragansett Surf & Skate Shop . Whether or not you choose to actually explore the water—you can, alternatively, simply walk along the beach and soak up the sun on your own—hit up neighborhood faves like Cool Beans Cafe for acai bowls or Fuel Coffee Bar for a cold brew and a fresh pastry.

Where to stay: The 31-room Shore House  blends nautical charm and Victorian elegance; plus, we’d be remiss not to highlight the beachy-chic accommodations and Instagram-worthy ocean views.

Don’t miss it: Snag a table at The Coast Guard House Restaurant and savor fresh seafood like freshly shucked oysters, hearty New England clam chowder, and gooey lobster mac.

Nearest airport: Westerly Airport (WST)

15.  Saugatuck, Michigan

Saugatuck, Michigan

This welcoming West Michigan town combines local charm with a beautiful lakefront setting to provide visitors with the platonic ideal of a midwestern beach getaway. Long known for its vibrant arts community thanks to the Saugatuck Center for the Arts and the Chicago Art Institute’s Oxbow School of Art and Artists’ Residency, the laid-back destination is now emerging as a culinary hot spot. Virtue Cider , founded by the former brewmaster of Chicago’s Goose Island Brewery, turns out award-winning cider while Pennyroyal Café & Provisions , helmed by former Chopped winner Missy Corey, serves elevated takes on local specialties like fried perch. Meanwhile, James Beard-nominated eatery The Southerner serves dangerously (in a good way) spicy fried chicken sandwiches. The town has also been long known for welcoming LGBTQ+ travelers thanks, in part, to lively party spots like The Dunes Resort .

Where to stay: The Lake Shore Resort , just north of Saugatuck, provides stunning views of Lake Michigan from a dramatic bluff.

Don’t miss it: Tulip Time , a weeklong festival dedicated to all things tulips, kicks off on May 4.

Nearest airport:  Muskegon County Airport (MKG)

16.  Sarasota, Florida

Sarasota, Florida

Nestled between Tampa and Fort Meyers, Sarasota boasts nearly 40 miles of white sand beaches and wildlife along Florida’s balmy Gulf shoreline. But this quaint beach town also touts a quirky history and some serious urban amenities. Circus mogul John Ringling moved his shows here for the winter in 1927. Since then, the city’s become an eclectic cultural hub, home to the renowned Sarasota School of Architecture, numerous respected art programs, museums and performance venues.

Work up an appetite exploring Sarasota’s galleries, botanical gardens and famed keys like Siesta and Longboat, then bounce around its bustling waterfront downtown for dinner and nightlife—but not before indulging in homemade pies from Yoder’s Amish Village . This spring, Circus Sarasota celebrates its 26th anniversary.

Where to stay: The Lido Beach House ’s charming mid-century modern digs are a short, scenic bridge away from downtown.

Don’t miss it: John Ringling's former home, Ca’ d’Zan , is a Venetian Gothic-style stunner with ornate interiors and sweeping views of Sarasota Bay. It also served as the location for Miss Havisham’s dilapidated mansion in the 1996 film  Great Expectations.

Nearest airport:  Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ)

17.  Laughlin, Nevada

Laughlin, Nevada

Located 90 miles south of Las Vegas, Laughlin, Nevada is a smaller, quieter version of Las Vegas with a small-town feel. With less than 10,000 permanent residents, Laughlin boasts eight casinos, dozens of casino resort restaurants like the Western-themed Claim Jumper, and bars with live bands like Losers Lounge along the Colorado River. Surrounded by the Mojave Desert and boasting a beautiful mountain backdrop, Laughlin is a paradise for gamblers and outdoor enthusiasts who can kayak or river cruise along the Colorado River that runs through the heart of town, hike the Colorado River Heritage Trails that runs parallel the water, explore stone mazes at Laughlin Labyrinths , and chill in a poolside cabana at Don Laughlin’s Riverside Resort and Harrah’s Laughlin Beach Resort & Casino. Nearby, sunbathers can enjoy Lake Mohave’s 200 miles of shoreline and explore its coves and wildlife, drive Route 66, visit Hoover Dam , and visit Arizona’s oldest distillery, Desert Diamond Distillery .

Where to stay: Most of Laughlin’s 9,000 hotel rooms are less than $50 a night. Aquarius Casino Resort is the largest.;

Don’t miss it: Stroll along Laughlin Riverwalk , a paved walkway along the Colorado River that connects most of the casinos.

Nearest airport:  Laughlin/Bullhead International Airport (IFP)

Absolutely fantastic stay. Beautiful surroundings, really lovely staff and the pods are surprisingly warm and cozy 💕 we turned up 3 hours before check in and the lady (I wish I remembered her name) on reception was very accommodating and let us check in early as there was a pod ready. Frequently Asked Questions

What types of weekend breaks are available.

We offer a hugely diverse range of weekend breaks all across the UK (and some beyond!). These include luxury hotels in centre cities like London, Edinburgh and Liverpool, glamping breaks, B&Bs, spa retreats and much, much more - including options for the whole family, adults’ only and dog-friendly. You’ll find budget-friendly ideas, all-out luxury for extra-special occasions and everything in between in the 'Short Breaks' section of our website.

How much do the weekend breaks cost?

It depends on what you’re looking for - you can find glamping minibreaks for under £75, while some of our once-in-a-lifetime weekend breaks might set you back around £500. (We’d say that’s still pretty good value, FYI.) We regularly run Special Offers and deals on our weekend breaks, too, so keep your eyes peeled.

Are there any special offers or discounts available for weekend breaks?

Yep, there are plenty - we regularly work with our partners to ensure we can give our customers the best deal possible. That means you’ll often find special offers or time-limited deals on weekend breaks. This isn’t limited to certain occasions, either - we run them all year round.

Where can I find reviews and feedback from people who have experienced a Virgin Experience Days break before?

Browse our Short Breaks page, choose an experience that takes your fancy, and scroll down to the ‘Reviews’ section. These are automatically updated, so you’ll get a chance to see what others have to say about their trip.

Is it possible to customise my own break package with Virgin Experience Days?

At the moment, customised break packages aren’t something we offer - but never say never! That’s not to say we don’t have loads of exciting stuff already, though - if you scroll through our Short Breaks, you’ll find plenty with ready-made itineraries, from outdoor adventure weekends, to short breaks paired with Michelin-starred dinners, theatre shows and more.

Are there any age restrictions on booking a weekend break with Virgin Experience Days?

This all depends on the particular weekend break you’re looking to book. You’ll find all the details you need in the section marked ‘Participant Guidelines’. There, you’ll see the minimum age requirements if they apply. For spa breaks, this is often 18+, but we have a huge range of family-friendly and child-friendly weekend breaks available, too.

A gastronomic glamping break in Cornwall

weekend getaways and short breaks uk

Tucked away in peaceful St Merryn, a ten-minute drive from Padstow, these luxury shepherd's huts owned by legendary chef Rick Stein are perfect for a salt-whipped, seafood-themed short break on the north Cornwall coast. Set in the grounds of The Cornish Arms, a country gastro pub also owned by the Stein empire, there's certainly no roughing it in the five huts, all of which have underfloor heating, Nespresso machines and boujie boutique kitchens.

And you don't need to go far for a legendary Stein meal, either. The Cornish Arms – awash with low-slung oak beams, roaring log fires and topnotch local beers – serves a treasure chest of delights, including grilled scallops, baked sea bream and Stein's signature Pondicherry hake curry for two. Once a royal hunting ground for William the Conqueror, it's still home to wild ponies, cattle, deer and donkeys, and is the perfect spot for a country escape.

On the leafy fringes of Brockenhurst village stands Careys Manor , a grand manor house hotel with wood-panelled walls, exposed brick and vast stone fireplaces. Behind its austere Victorian façade hides SenSpa, a beautiful Southeast Asian-inspired spa with an impressive hydrotherapy suite, a Thai restaurant and a Zen garden to relax in.

Country walks and honey-hued villages in the Cotswolds

weekend getaways short breaks uk

Weekend getaways in the UK don't get much more charming than the Cotswolds . Countryside ambles, picturesque villages and a burgeoning foodie scene make this a seriously sought-after spot for a mini break.

Looking for the perfect place to stay? The Slaughters Manor House offers the quintessential honey-coloured appeal, boasting old-world beauty on the outside and a cool, contemporary interior. Vineyard views in the South Downs at a West Sussex retreat

weekend getaways and short breaks uk

It’s no secret that the south is where it's at for the UK’s best wine. But while it's usually English fizz that attracts most of the buzz, the South Downs is also home to England’s first pinotage vineyard at the picture-perfect Leonardslee Estate.

Wake with a view over the vines when you check in to the decadent Leonardslee House , an 1855 Italianate-style mansion revamped in 2019 with impressive results. The extra time and attention spent perfecting the 10 high-ceilinged guest rooms with British-designed furnishings and carefully curated collections of books and illustrations really pays off, giving a stylish elegance to your weekend getaway.

Don’t miss the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant, Interlude, where an 18-course tasting menu championing estate-foraged ingredients can be paired with wines from Leonardslee’s sister vineyard in South Africa.

Lounge in luxury at a destination spa in Leicestershire

weekend getaways and short breaks uk

The beauty of doing nothing is highly underrated in these modern, hyper-connected times – and sometimes we need to really dial it down to reconnect and re-energise ourselves. And there's nowhere nicer to lounge about in luxury than at Ragdale Hall Spa , an indulgent spa hotel in a leafy corner of Leicestershire.

With six pools, including a glorious rooftop infinity pool and a thermal spa with no less than 12 heat and water experiences, plus more than a hundred spa professionals to cater to your every whim, it's the perfect place for a pampering weekend getaway. Of course, it's important to nurture your taste buds as well, and Ragdale's grand dining room and elegant cocktail bar do this particularly well.

Head west for a leafy London city break

weekend getaways and short breaks uk

A London city break is as exciting as it comes – famous sights, endless shopping, West End shows, and so much more... It's fun but also exhausting. Just nine miles west of Trafalgar Square, Richmond-on-Thames is a perfect alternative for a relaxing London city break. Home to London's largest royal park, spot the resident deer in Duchess Wood, enjoy a stroll along the Thames Path, stopping for a pint in a riverside pub, while Kew Gardens, Petersham Nurseries and Ham House are all within easy reach.

A stone's throw from Richmond Park and the River Thames, The Richmond Hill Hotel is a Georgian beauty and a relaxing base for exploring this leafy corner of the capital. Behind its Regency façade is a elegant and contemporary interior with a swanky, seasonally inspired restaurant and a chic cocktail bar.

An underground spa and city break in Bath

weekend getaways and short breaks uk

Combine a short break to Bath with a stay in a luxury hotel at The Gainsborough Bath Spa , which has a very unique selling point: thermal mineral waters that pump directly into its underground spa and spa suites.

The opulent hotel is tucked down a quiet side street in the centre of town, so you're perfectly placed to explore the renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site city from your indulgent base. It's blissfully easy to take in the Roman Baths, the Georgian terraces at the Royal Crescent, and climb the Bath Abbey tower during even the shortest break.

Oh, and don't forget to grab a Sally Lunn bun while you're at it – the cakes at the oldest house in Bath , now a tea room, are legendary.

Horse riding and boutique chic in the New Forest

weekend getaways and short breaks uk

Boasting the kinds of trendy interiors you might expect to find in a funky London hotel, The Huntsman of Brockenhurst is a boutique bolthole and traditional pub smack-bang in the middle of the New Forest.

You can go horse riding at the local stables, see wild ponies roaming around the streets, or enjoy plenty of pretty country walks in the heathland and forest trails. And when it's time for a rest, there's no place more dreamy to hole up in than one of the hotel's 13 individually designed bedrooms complete with huge, comfy beds and deep bath tubs.

A foodie staycation at an idyllic country house in Kent

weekend getaways and short breaks uk

Tucked away on the leafy outskirts of Ashford – a 10-minute taxi ride from Ashford International – Boys Hall is a beautiful boutique hotel in a Jacobean manor house. Set in three acres of wild English gardens, this country house invites you to sit back with a glass of local fizz on the sun-drenched terrace or cosy down over a game of Scrabble and a warming cocktail in the oak-panelled lounge.

The main draw is the food. Championing the best of small local Kent producers – it's not called the Garden of England for nothing – dine out on dishes such as grilled Romney Marsh lamb, rosemary potato and pickled morels, hot smoked salmon with avocado and sushi rice or sticky braun crumpet with kohlrabi and pickled chilli, while the menu's local Kent wines shine. After dinner, hunker down in one of the nine plush, beamed suites.

Outdoor swimming and countryside tramping in Hampshire

weekend getaways and short breaks uk

Pull in and park up for a weekend getaway at Tylney Hall in Hampshire. There's a lovely spa and indoor pool for relaxing and, when the weather plays ball, the huge outdoor pool becomes wildly inviting.

With its 66 acres of grounds to explore (dogs and children welcome) as well as on-site croquet and bikes for hire, the Victorian mansion offers the sort of splendour reminiscent of a bygone era.

And, if you're a historical literary fan, you can drive 20 minutes to visit Jane Austen's Grade I-listed home in Chawton, where she wrote many of her novels.

Seaside pampering on a wellness weekend in Cornwall

weekend getaways and short breaks uk

With stunning views across sub-tropical gardens to Gyllyngvase Beach, St Michaels Resort in Falmouth is the perfect place for a relaxing (or active) weekend getaway.

With a super-swish spa and fitness programme, you can choose how much you want to get involved in, whether it's a yoga class or simply relaxing in the cedarwood hot tub and the South West's largest hydra pool.

Walk the Coastal Path before enjoying scrumptious food in the stylish restaurant with a sea-facing deck.

A regal country retreat in Yorkshire

weekend getaways and short breaks uk

There could be worse weekend getaways than tucking into traditional Cream Tea at one of the finest stately homes in the country. Goldsborough Hall is a 400-year-old upscale country retreat that was once the home of Princess Mary, the aunt of Queen Elizabeth II.

It features beautiful period features throughout, luxurious four-poster beds and Chesterfield sofas, plus a three-AA-Rosette fine dining restaurant.

The upmarket spa town of Harrogate, with its posh eateries, boutique shops, pretty parks, and art galleries, is just 20 minutes away. And there's ample opportunity for tramping the Yorkshire Moors, visiting historic buildings (Bolton Abbey and Knaresborough Castle), while Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal, Yorkshire's finest Cistercian Abbey ruin, is just half an hour away.

History, culture and a stylish hotel in Oxford

weekend getaways and short breaks uk

Arguably the trendiest hotel in Oxford, The Old Bank is a modern and stylish place to make your base for exploring this historically-rich city. As well as The Botanic Garden, Magdalen Bridge and the River Cherwell all being within five minutes of the hotel, there are also views over Oxford 's iconic college buildings like University Church of St Mary and Radcliffe Camera.

You'll enjoy how the period features sit next to impressive modern art as well as the buzzy brasserie. You can also head down the river towpath on two wheels on one of the hotel's bikes.

Beachside bliss and a rooftop terrace in Devon

weekend getaways and short breaks uk

Soak up the sun and the coastal views at Salcombe Harbour Hotel , a nautical-chic hotel on the shores of the Salcombe Estuary. The location is sublime, and you'll feel instantly relaxed sipping cocktails on a sun lounger on the rooftop terrace.

Enjoy walks on the coast path, and the freshest catch of the day at the waterside restaurant. Situated in the South Devon AONB, you're also just half an hour from Dartmoor National Park, making this a lovely spot for a short UK break.

Fell-walking and Michelin-starred dining in the Lake District

weekend getaways and short breaks uk

Foodies and walkers will be in heaven on this weekend getaway in the Lake District . Check in to the Forest Side Hotel on the edge of picturesque Grasmere for a weekend full of epic walks and equally impressive dishes.

The Victorian mansion is home to Michelin-starred restaurant, where you can enjoy the freshest, local produce in a cosy and relaxed atmosphere. And for when you're looking to burn off all that indulgence, you can be at the top of the Helm Crag fell in 90 minutes.

Soak up the heritage in Henley-on-Thames

weekend getaways and short breaks uk

Escape for a riverside staycation in 12th-century market town Henley-on-Thames, which sits beside the River Thames and is overlooked by the gorgeous Chilterns. Known for its annual Royal Regatta, Henley attracts the world’s finest rowers and is an excellent place to enjoy your own boat trip down the river during a weekend getaway.

You'll want to check into the Hotel Du Vin , housed in a building that spent centuries as a brewery – which is rather ironic when you see the length of the wine list! The hotel has retained its heritage while boasting warm and inviting spaces, blending Georgian details with modern furnishings. Alfresco meals in the courtyard are also a highlight in the warmer months.

Weekend champers at a rooftop bar in Edinburgh

weekend getaways and short breaks uk

The Market Street Hotel forms part of Edinburgh's historic city skyline, and boasts a wonderful rooftop lounge and champagne bar. It's also perfectly located for taking in all the sights, being just a few minutes on foot from the Royal Mile.

Sleek, contemporary interiors are complemented by thoughtful touches like freshly roasted coffee and milk frothers in each of the stylish bedrooms. The food is also sublime, and always best washed down with a glass or three of champagne.

Must-visits like Camera Obscura, the National Museum of Scotland, and Edinburgh Castle are also just a hop, skip and a jump away.

The best travel bags for every type of trip: from weekend getaways to extended vacations.

Travelling is an exciting adventure, whether you’re going away for a short weekend or taking a nice, relaxing vacation. Choosing the perfect travel bag can greatly impact your overall travel experience.

When it comes to finding the ideal bag for your travels, it’s important to consider factors like convenience and durability. After all, you want a bag that will meet your specific needs.

weekend trips away

Picture: Supplied

Here, we discuss the top travel bags for all kinds of trips, so you can be fully prepared for any adventure you embark on.

The Classic Duffel Bag for Weekend Getaways

For short trips, a duffel bag is an ideal choice. The compact yet spacious design of these luggage bags allows you to pack all your essentials without the bulk of a suitcase. The classic duffel bag is easy to carry, often featuring both shoulder straps and handles for versatile use.

Opt for a lightweight, water-resistant material to protect your belongings from unexpected weather. Brands like Patagonia and The North Face offer durable options with sleek designs, perfect for a quick escape.

The Rolling Carry-On for Business Trips

Business travellers need luggage bags that combines functionality with professionalism. A rolling carry-on is an excellent choice for these trips, offering ample space for both work essentials and personal items.

Look for a bag with organized compartments, including a padded laptop sleeve and sections for documents, chargers, and toiletries.

Samsonite and Tumi are well-known for their high-quality rolling carry-ons, which balance style and practicality. These bags also fit easily in overhead compartments, making airport navigation a breeze.

The Spacious Check-In Suitcase for Family Vacations

When travelling with family, packing efficiently is key . A spacious check-in suitcase allows you to consolidate everyone’s belongings into fewer bags, reducing the hassle of juggling multiple pieces of luggage.

Hard-shell suitcases are particularly useful for protecting fragile items, and many modern designs come with built-in dividers and compression straps to keep everything in place.

Brands like Away and Travelpro offer expandable options with sturdy wheels and handles, making them easy to manoeuvre through busy airports.

The Versatile Backpack for Adventure Travel

For the adventurous traveller, a versatile backpack is a must-have. Whether you’re hiking through mountains or exploring remote villages, a durable backpack keeps your hands free while ensuring you have all your essentials close at hand.

Look for features like water-resistant materials, padded straps, and multiple compartments for organization. Osprey and Deuter are top choices for adventure backpacks, offering ergonomic designs that distribute weight evenly, reducing strain on your back and shoulders during long treks.

The Large Wheeled Duffel for Extended Vacations

Extended vacations require a bag that can accommodate weeks’ worth of clothing and gear. A large-wheeled duffel combines the flexibility of a duffel with the convenience of wheels, making it easy to transport even when fully loaded.

This type of bag is ideal for longer trips where you need to pack more but still want the ease of mobility. Look for options with durable zippers, reinforced handles, and rugged wheels that can handle various terrains.

Brands like Eagle Creek and The North Face offer wheeled duffels that are both spacious and sturdy, perfect for those extended getaways.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re heading out for a quick weekend getaway , a business trip, a family vacation, an adventurous trek, or an extended vacation, there’s a perfect travel bag out there to meet your needs. Investing in a quality bag not only protects your belongings but also allows you to travel in comfort and style, ready for any adventure that comes your way.
