Preveza – A seaside Gem famous for being Non-Pretentious

Preveza is one of those places in northwestern Greece, at the mouth of the Ambracian Gulf, where you can literally just switch off and unwind. It’s a serious bucket-list adventure and is one of Greece’s gems.

Many travelers hire a car at the airport and drive from Preveza to Lefkáda which is a trip of about   25 minutes. The buses take slightly longer but they leave Preveza every 3 hours.

Agios haralambos temple  .

The beautiful temple of Agios Haralambos is one of the city’s most magnificent churches, built during the 18 th century. The Archaeological Site of Nikopolis  

Spanning over the area of 900 acres, the Archaeological site of Nikopolis is located 10 kilometres from Preveza. One of the greatest naval battles took place at the Amvrakikos gulf in 31 B.C which put an end to the roman civil war, changing the course of history of the Roman Empire. In commemoration of his victory, Octavian Augustus founded the city of Nikopoli which became the centre of Greek civilisation   as well as the meeting point between the eastern and western world.

It is here that the local games of Acarnanians took place, the Aktia Festival took place every four years and was equivalent to the Olympic Games.  

Archaeological Museum of Nikopolis  

The Archaeological Museum of Nikopolis is located between the city of Preveza and the archaeological site of Nikopolis. The Museum is exclusively dedicated to the city founded in commemoration of Octavian Augustus victory at the naval battle of Actium in 31 BC. This event did not only result in the fining of Nikopolis but it had an important influence on the shape of the Roman Empire and the course of history. The central theme of the exhibition is thus named “One Battle, One City, One Empire”.  

In the two halls of the museum visitors can admire artefacts which represent the city’s evolution from the magnificent Roman Nicopolis, to its development into the Early Christian city, following the collapse of the western frontiers and the relocation of the empire’s capital from the West to the East, and through the establishment of Christianity. The two periods when Nikopolis thrived can be perceived primarily through art and architecture.  

The Paragaea Olive Oil Factory

Who doesn’t love the good wines, feta cheese and olive oil from Greece? It is why you see so many Greek homes built around olive trees. Olive oil is part of Greek culture and the extra virgin olive oil is harvested at the end of October. You can be part of a guided tour of the Paragaea Olive oil factory where you can sample the oil and also buy a bottle or two. The excellent staff are clued up about all the different oils and will answer all your questions.  

Acheron River  

Preveza has much to offer the tourist looking for a fun-filled time. Many visitors head to the beautiful Acheron River. What a spectacular piece of nature this is, with the river covering a distance of   64 km and flowing through a narrow canyon.  

Have your camera ready because of the sheer beauty of the place. The mouth of the river is in the village of Ammoudia and there are chances for boat cruises. You can also wear some sturdy rubber shoes and hike-cum-swim up the river. What nicer way to experience the outdoors than to eat fresh fish from the river? This you can do when you sit outside at one of the many inviting taverns alongside the river.  

Preveza prefecture is the ideal place to take in different aspects of nature. Look at Lake Ziros for instance, a sought after destination for those who love the outdoors.The beauty of the place attracts many birds and small animals. This major attraction offers much for the kayaking enthusiast and this is a splendid way to take in the beauty of the place. The lake is about 1000 m, it’s width is about 500 m wide and its depth more than 25 m. You can’t find a more lovely place for relaxing walks.

Monolithi Beach

Monolithi Beach feels like it’s a place where the fun never sets. It is just 8km from Preveza and is known for its sparkling blue water, inviting you to dive right in.   There are plenty of beach bars, plenty of amenities and modern infrastructure to ensure beachgoers can be comfortable and happy the entire day.   The beach is long and it also has a road running next to it with bars, restaurants and cafes. There are certain areas of the beach that have lifeguards on duty.

Colorful Festivals of Preveza

The people of Preveza have an interesting tradition – this sardine festival takes place each year – usually during the first week of August as part of the different cultural festivities of the Nikopolia. Thousands of people flock to the Agios Andreas Castle where you can get the chance to have free helpings of grilled sardines and wine. If that’s not reason for much rejoicing, there is also live music and dancing. This event is a highlight on the Preveza calendar.  

Jazz Festival  

Lovers of jazz music will be blown away with the highly professional jazz music played by selected guests from other European countries. The festival, held during the last days of May and into the first few days of June promises a few days of jazz music magic. It started out in 2003 and over the years, the high-quality jazz music has just been getting better and better. Some of the names that have featured include Cristina Villalonga, Eric Burdon, Goran Bregovic, Wim Mertens, Stranglers, Marina Satti and many others.

Discovering the West Coast of Greece: Preveza

Situated on the west coast of Greece , the town of Preveza is the capital of the Preveza prefecture and a holiday destination popular with Greek and European tourists. The town lies on the coast of the Ionian Sea , at the mouth of the Ambracian Gulf , and is always busy because it is a transit port for visitors to Northern Greece, thanks to its proximity to resorts such as Parga and the island of Lefkas .

The town is a marvelous place to stroll around, with its narrow , winding pedestrian streets , and historic buildings . Before it became part of Greece again in the early 20th century, Preveza was ruled by the Venetians, the French and the Turks, whose influences can be seen in the town’s diverse architecture . The Kastro castle near the seafront features some stunning reliefs on the outer walls, while the St George’s Castle and the Pantokrator to the south are wonderful examples of the Turkish engineering and serve as monuments of the rich history of the area. Several great naval battles took place in the region, the most famous of which are the Battle of Aktium (31 BC) and the Naval Battle of Preveza (1538).

Unlike many other seaside towns, Preveza retains much of its original charm , refusing to change and meet the demands of mass tourism. There are many excellent beaches in and outside of the town, and numerous sights to explore. Summer is the period of the busiest activity, with a choral festival held in July, and a sardine festival in August.

If you have time, you should visit the remains of the ancient town of Nicopolis a few kilometers to the north of Preveza, the brand new museum of Nikopolis , and the supposed Nekromanteion (a temple of the dead). Other ancient cities in the historic region of Epirus include Cassope and Orraon . One of the most distinctive sights in the area is the Monument of Zalongo , erected to commemorate a mass suicide of women and children, who wanted to avoid the enslavement by the Ottoman troops in 1803. The valley of Kokkinopelos will amaze its visitors with its red soil.

Preveza has been shaking off its old-fashioned image in recent years, offering a host of interesting experiences for visitors and making the most of its natural beauty and historical landmarks .

Easily accessible due to the new and improved road networks, both from the Ionian islands and the modern Egnatia Motorway , it is an affordable destination, especially when compared to the neighboring islands. Accommodation options are increasing, and Preveza itself serves as an ideal base to explore the wider Ambracian Gulf region , as well as short trips to Parga and Lefkada .

Endless sandy beaches

From Preveza to the coastal resort town of Parga, there are approximately 45km of coastline filled with sandy beaches. Monolithi is one of the largest in Greece, stretching for several kilometers, with deep waters and big waves, especially in the afternoon. Loutsa is beloved by the locals, thanks to its crystal-clear waters and fine white sand, while the rocky formations in the sea at Artolithia are also impressive.

Approximately 150 dolphins live within the Ambracian Gulf , and the traditional boats departing from the port of Preveza every morning offer excursions in search of these highly intelligent marine mammals. There is a good chance of seeing them up close, as dolphins are social animals, and as soon as they sense human presence they approach and swim alongside the small boat. En route, you’ll also likely encounter pelicans, possibly sea turtles, and enjoy beautiful dips in the sea .

The family-owned business Amvrakikos Cruises (Preveza, tel. 6949-353576, amvrakikoscruises.gr ), has two traditional boats, and its members have extensive knowledge of the area.

Roman aqueduct

Epirus is filled with waters, springs, rivers, and lakes, and the broader area of Preveza is no exception. Located 43km from the city is Lake Ziros , which is perfect for canoeing and kayaking.

Just 7km outside the village of Aghios Georgios you should visit the Roman Aqueduct of Nikopolis . The aqueduct was situated approximately 50km from the ancient city, and water was transported over such a long distance via bridges, tunnels, and pipes. A few meters below, at the traditional water mill and water press, locals use the waters of the Louros River to wash carpets and traditional “flokati” (woven wool) rugs.

Culinary treasures from the sea

You must try the seafood and fish in Preveza, a city renowned for its fresh seafood . It’s most associated with sardines, and the annual Sardine Festival takes place at the end of August, highlighting Preveza’s fishing tradition. This is where they also cook “petali,” grilled fish split in half . As for the restaurant menus, they usually include shrimp, anchovies, mullets, as well as sea bream and octopus.

At Alati (Tel. (+30) 26820.271.45), located on the beachfront in the city center, enjoy creatively inspired seafood dishes such as the delicious orzo risotto with Ambracian shrimp  and Lemnos Muscat wine. In the narrow streets of the old town, Treli Garida (Tel. (+30) 26820.256.91) is a good spot to try petali and, of course, shrimp. Outside the city, near the beaches on the way to Parga, you will find Skaloma (Limanaki Lygias, Tel. (+30) 26820.562.40) for fresh shrimp, sand smelt, sardines, and whatever else the fishing boats have brought in.

Preveza: between the mountain and the sea, on the gorgeous epirotic “riviera”.

Preveza, the place where the Ionian sea, the Amvrakikos gulf and the Epirotic inland meet, exudes authenticity and beauty

Great beaches, a lovely historic centre, great food with fresh fish and seafood, great prices for a wide range of accommodation options, among which the number of luxury hotels is steadily increasing. Just the above would be enough to make Preveza a top holiday destination, but the town is generous and has more to offer. It’s the where the unique Epirotic coastline is linked to island destinations like Lefkada and Paxi, but also the starting point or a stop for sailing holidays on the calm Ionian sea.

Its heart beats in the historic centre with the intricate network of narrow alleys, the countless ouzo taverns, the bars, the cafés and the restaurants. You’ll instantly fall for the irresistible smells of the fresh fish, the seafood, the famous Amvrakikos shrimp grilled everywhere, and the anise-y fragrance of ouzo in the air.

Go for relaxed walks among the imposing neoclassical buildings and the scenic folk architecture houses beneath the Venetian clock tower. The Venetian clock tower with the sundial was built in 1752 but the “hat” on top and the bell tower of the Agios Charalambos church were added later.

When you’re in Preveza, you must absolutely visit the church of Agios Charalambos , built in the 18 th century. The interior decoration with the lovely paintings influenced by Venetian painting, the carved wooden, gold coated altar, and the 18 th century icons, great examples of the Ionian Islands School, is very impressive.

The church of Agios Athanasios , built during the Venetian rule, also has amazing paintings, and it one of the oldest churches in town. It has stunning frescoes dating back to 1780, icons of the Ionian Islands School, and an incredibly impressive ceiling decorated with paintings.

As you continue your exploration of the historic centre, you’re bound to come across the bust of poet Kostas Karyotakis , who committed suicide, located in the small Dardanelia square. A major contemporary poet, tormented by syphilis, he shot himself, aged only 32 years old. He didn’t get to see his work being translated in over 30 languages. Near the square, on the most picturesque alley of the centre, Saitan Pazar, you’ll find his house.

According to legend the name of this lovely colourful downhill alley with the jasmine and bougainvillea trees originated in the Ottoman times – it derives from şeytan which means Satan in Turkish. Legend has it that a very harsh Turkish commander who had gone to collect taxes, fell off his horse to the stone ground that had been covered in soap by the residents, and as he fell he yelled şeytan Pazar, that is to say Satan’s bazar .

With the passage of time, small shops, printer’s, barbers, taverns, and music coffee shops opened on the street and the tradition is preserve today, as you can eat, drink and have fun in one of the many beautiful modern establishments.

The history of Preveza was also written by its residents’ trades and businesses, some of which have been around for many decades. For example, you can’t come to town and not visit OUZO ROUMPOU on Andrianoupoleos street, in the centre. It’s one of the oldest distilleries in Greece that has been working without stop since 1949. Their products: of course, ouzo – the main spirit they drink in Preveza, with tsipouro (traditional pomace raki) coming second by far –, a lovely cinnamon liquor that comes from distilling cinnamon, a kind of brandy with subtle vanilla aromas etc. Neat, old-fashioned window displays with countless bottles, wooden floors, lace doilies, and, at the back of the store, hidden, the old alembic.

You must also make a stop at the age-old barbershop of Timoleon Veskas on Kontou Hristou street (Saitan Pazar). The window has a wooden frame painted a retro green-blue shade, inside you’ll see the classic barber’s chair, and an equally old-fashioned brown small sofa for the customers to sit on in the waiting area. The shop has been open since 1920, going from Timoleon Veskas’ father’s hands into the hands of another barber in 1946, and then into his hands in 1952, when he learned the trade. Today he also gives modern cuts and male visitors might want to be able to say they’ve had a haircut at the oldest barbershop in Greece.

Outside the limits of the historic centre, the Raptis Dimitrios restaurant on 51 Panagi Tsaldari street is a cook shop – patsatsidiko (a place that serves patsas – Greek tripe soup) that’s been open since 1933. The owner-cook, Dimitris Raptis, is a very tall biker who marvellously cooks all the traditional Greek dishes and many soups: patsas, meat soup, bean soup, yuvarlakia (Greek meatball soup) etc. The best soup among them is the one he makes with the cow head and feet. It’s a unique recipe, a balm for the stomach, a caress to the palate.

And since you’re already outside the historic centre, the road will lead you to the central square with the imposing statue of Odysseas Androutsos, the chieftain who played a crucial role in the end of the Siege of Missolonghi by Omer Vrioni in 1822, and who defeated the troops of Dramalis, and who was from Preveza. His fate was similar to many of the great Greeks: he was either killed by the government of the post-revolution Greece, or he died in prison in Preveza.

The Amvrakikos gulf is a sight in its own right, as it almost forms a lagoon within the Ionian sea with hundreds of species of flora and fauna, including dolphins, as well as monuments, towns and villages on its banks. It’s a stunning national park, a source of fresh fish and of the famous Amvrakikos shrimp . You can go on a mini sailboat cruise, starting from the port. From the village Agios Thomas, 5 km from town, you’ll get a great view of the whole Amvrakikos gulf and Preveza.

Heading down towards the sea, you can walk on the pedestrian seaside promenade, next to the new Preveza marina with the sailboats, for a romantic walk. Two years ago, there was nothing in the location where the Preveza marina was built, and when night fell, everything was covered in darkness. The marina offers safe mooring and every amenity and service for the boats, including a restaurant, a café as well as organised trips to the many sights in the area.

The marina first opened in 2020, right before the lockdown, but as Mr Giannis Tefas, the owner of the construction company “Tefa Group’ explains, despite the severe decrease in tourism, the Preveza marina has managed to get high numbers of visitors, both from the wider Epirus area and from the rest of Greece and the Balkans, as it is an area that is in the process of dynamic development. The location of Preveza between the gorgeous Epirotic riviera, Paxi, and Lefkada has created a whole league of sailing boat companies in town, for anyone who wants to spend their holidays in a more adventurous and independent way. The Preveza marina is the starting point as well as stop for wealthy boat owners who are cruising the calm Ionian sea.

What are the expectations going forth? Mr Tefas is optimistic: “We think that the sea tourism season can last eight months – at the moment it lasts six months – and this will influence the town’s land tourism as well, that at the moment lasts barely three months.”  The cruising sector has also developed lately, and Preveza businesspeople are relying on the many archaeological sites and the great food to attract a particular audience, like the so-called “silver tourism”, that is the older public.

The fact that you can go directly from the airport of a European city to the beach or get on a sailboat has strengthened the town’s tourist profile, and as a result the number of visitors has increased. The increase of charter flights into Aktion airport has also played a role in this – perhaps due to the airport of Corfu reaching its capacity. This year they are building a second runway, something that will support tourism further, while there are already direct flights to/from Milan, Paris, London .

The best of the best all year round

The archaeological site of Nikopolis is very close to town. It’s a huge space with impressive walls – the main gate has been reconstructed – while the marvellous theatre is also being reconstructed. You need to use your imagination to see how the public buildings, spread in the valley, looked like: the theatre, the conservatory, the early Christian churches. Nikopolis was built by the Roman emperor Caesar Augustus to commemorate his victory over Antony and Cleopatra in the battle of Actium in 31 BC.

The archaeological museum of Nikopolis (tel.: 0030 2682 041336) is located near the site and houses findings from the majestic Roman Nikopolis, as well as from Nikopolis of the early Byzantine times. Hall B, where scenes of everyday life of the citizens of Nikopolis are displayed, in a sort of “walk” from the port to the workshops, houses and cemeteries of town, is very touching and interesting.

The Pantokratoras castle, also known as Uc Kale , has an amazing view and is located very close to the beach Kiani Akti . The castle is part of the town fortress built by Ali Pasha in the early 19 th century, while in the 1940s it was used as a prison by the Greek state. It has high perimeter walls, shaped as a pentagon, with a sea bastion and a large internal yard.

The Nekromanteion of Acheron / Nikos Kokkas

Visiting the Nekromanteion of Acheron (tel.: 0030 26840 41206 – 0030 26820 89890) in the village Mesopotamos, on top of hill where the, now dried, lake Acherousia used to be, is a unique experience. The basement (with no acoustics) where the visitors went, after cleanses and sacrifices, to communicate with the dead is quite something. A bit further down, at the village Amoudia, at the mouth of river Acheron, you can take a boat on the river, recreating the route ancient visitors took.

Around 45 km away, the legendary Souli maintains its austere warlike atmosphere and is bound to impress you. You can visit the masterfully restored house of chieftain Lambros Tzavellas and “Guesthouse Souli” is great for a meal or to spend the night (tel. 0030 698 787 8251).

The Monument of Zalongo, a monumental sculpture by George Zongolopoulos, is located 29 km from Preveza, near Souli, on the top of Mount Zalongo at 786 m altitude, to honour the women of Souli who, trapped there, in December 1803, fell off the cliff with their children, so as to avoid capture by the army of Ali Pasha. Near Filippiada, the stunning lake Ziros , surrounded by the forest, creates an idyllic serene landscape where you can enjoy the peace, go hiking, cycling and, in the summer, canoeing. Not far from the lake, the Agios Varnavas’ forest is another spot of peace and quiet. Birds chirping, plane trees, white poplars, alders and on a clearing, the deserted church of Agios Varnavas that was first built in 1149, was destroyed, and then rebuilt.

With endless sapphire beaches, the lacy coastline of Preveza becomes everyone’s paradise, no matter what sea they dream of. Monolithi with its aesthetic forest , Kanali, Kastrosykia, all of them organised, the cosmopolitan Mytikas , Kiani Akti with the shallow waters, Artolithia with the impressive waters, the bays of Ligia, Vrahos, Loutsa, the bays Alonaki and Odysseus’ Ormos, even within the town, just a stone’s throw from the centre.

Parga, Greece: a charming and colourful village in Epirus

Parga is a charming seaside resort with colourful houses located on the coast of the Epirus region, in western Greece. Built on a hilltop dominated by a 14th century Norman fortress, Parga has a vibrant atmosphere, excellent food and lush beaches. It is close to many of Greece’s interesting sites, which makes it the perfect place to settle and discover the west coast! In this travel guide, I’ll share with you everything there is to know about this magical destination as well as the best things to see and do in Parga, Greece.

How to get to Parga, Greece

Parga is close to the airports of Preveza, Corfu and Ioannina. The easiest and fastest option is to land in Preveza, the nearest town (65 km). From Preveza airport, take the shuttle bus to the KTEL bus station in Preveza and then the bus from Preveza to Parga (several departures throughout the day). The journey takes about 2 hours, make sure to check the bus timetable before you leave! Taxis are also available directly from Preveza airport to take you to Parga.

The transportation company KTEL connects all major Greek cities by bus, so you can easily reach Parga from anywhere in Greece.

Getting around Parga

To visit the Epirus region and sites such as Sivota or the theatre of Dodona, the best solution is to rent a car. The platform RentalCars compares and offers the best rates in Greece, I am never disappointed with their service! There are also some KTEL buses and day cruises to discover the other beautiful destinations along the coast.

Where to stay in Parga?

Parga is a relatively small resort, so it’s easy to get around on foot wherever you stay. Choose your location according to what you plan to do there: do you plan on going swimming every day at the beach in the centre of Parga? Do you prefer to be on the move and discover a new destination in the area every day? Do you want a relatively quiet location with direct access to the beach? Find a strategic location! Here is a selection of hotels and campsites to guide you:

Hotels in Parga, Greece

Paradise Hotel : located in the centre of Parga, the Paradise Hotel offers a superb view of the village and its bay, in addition to a beautiful swimming pool and impeccable service.

Studios Spiros : very well located at the top of Parga’s centre and budget-friendly.

Hotel Maistrali : located just a few steps from Parga’s main beach, the hotel also offers private parking.

Camping in Parga

Camping Valtos : a simple but well-equipped campsite located less than 100 metres from Valtos beach and 15 minutes walk from the centre of Parga.

Stroll through the narrow streets, discover the tiny Orthodox churches and look for the most beautiful views of Parga!

Wander through the shops selling handmade leather shoes, soaps, wooden objects and stop at one of Parga’s bakeries to try some delicious local pastries.

Visit the Castle of Parga

Perched on the hill, the Castle of Parga dominates the city. Originally built in the 14th century by the Normans, the fortress has been through many changes: it was destroyed in 1537 by the Ottomans and then rebuilt a few decades later by the Venetians, before finally being restored by Ali Pasha in the early 19th century.

Today, only ruins remain, but one can imagine the history that took place here by walking through the impressive fortifications. The view of the coastline on either side of Parga from the top of the fortress is magnificent.

Beaches in Parga

With its turquoise sea and beautiful pebbles, the coastline along Parga calls for swimming! There are many beaches and coves along the coast, the best known being Krioneri, Piso Krioneri and Valtos, all three located in Parga itself. These can be reached on foot. Other beaches outside Parga are also worth a visit: Lichnos (4 kilometres away from Parga), Sarakiniko (12 kilometres) and Aï Giannakis (9 kilometres).

Swim to the islet of Panagia

Just across Krioneri beach is a charming little islet with a church. You can easily swim there and reach it in less than 10 minutes! The view of Parga and its pretty houses from there is worth it.

Ali Pasha’s Castle

Located a few kilometres above Parga, right outside the village of Anthoussa, Ali Pasha’s castle was built in 1814 with the aim of bombarding and then capturing Parga. Ali Pasha was then the governor of the Epirus region for the Ottoman Empire.

The view of the Ionian Sea from the castle is one of the most beautiful in the region, with a panorama of the islands of Paxi to the northwest and Lefkada to the southwest.

To get there, take the train of Parga which offers a 2-hour tour including a stop at Anthoussa. Alternatively, you can also hike to Ali Pasha’s Castle, it takes about 1 hour 45 minutes from Parga (around 5 kilometres).

In Anthoussa, stop at the Watermill Museum and walk to the beautiful waterfall.

Rent a boat

To discover the coast around Parga, go on a boat trip! There are many tours to the nearby beaches, I like how when on the sea you can appreciate the coastline from a different perspective. You can book your boat trip directly at the port or online right here.

What we like to do is to rent a small motorboat during one afternoon, so we are free to discover the coast at our own pace (also available directly at the port).

The best restaurants, tavernas and bars in Parga

Here is a selection of places I particularly enjoy in Parga:

Med Parga : very nice place to have a drink or dinner at the end of the day, the view over the sea and the sunset is fantastic.

Sakis : ideal to discover traditional Greek dishes! The menu is pretty extensive.

Gyros bank : the best souvlaki & gyros in Parga!

Bacchos Restaurant : a great place for a meal by the sea.

Atrium Bar : a bar overlooking the bay of Piso Krioneri, very pleasant at the end of the day.

Veranda Cocktail Bar : a trendy place to enjoy excellent cocktails in the evening.

Avocado Cocktail Bar : rooftop with a beautiful view over the whole town.

Experience Parga!

Day trips ideas from parga.

Located only 27 kilometres away from Parga, this pretty resort is famous for its intense blue sea and small islands with emerald green vegetation. Don’t miss the Blue Lagoon and the Bella Vraka beach on the island of Megalo Mourtemeno! The latter can be reached on foot via a shallow sandbank connecting it to the coastline. When in Sivota, rent a boat! It is the best way to discover all the beaches.

The islands of Paxos and Antipaxos form the Paxi archipelago. It is a destination south of Corfu very popular for its crystal-clear sea and pretty fishing villages! How to get there: Parga Cruises organises day trips and takes you through the highlights of the archipelago.

When in Parga, you can also go on a day trip to the island of Corfu! The ferry leaves at 8.30 am and returns to Parga at 6.30 pm. The journey is quite long, about 2.5 hours each way. The port there is only a few minutes walk from the old town, but you can also take a taxi at the roundabout when going out of the port. There, you will have enough time to explore Corfu Town, wander through its pretty alleys and on the Liston, browse through its local, charming shops, discover the Old Fortress and maybe even swim at Faliraki, a beach in the heart of Corfu’s old town.

The Acheron

In Greek mythology, the Acheron is one of the rivers of the Underworld, and a branch of the underground river Styx. It is a place steeped in history, where you can enjoy swimming, walking (feet in the river), kayaking, horse riding… all in a magnificent natural setting. Don’t forget to bring a swimming suit and suitable shoes! The Acheron is 25 kilometres away from Parga and the best way to get there is by car. Alternatively, you can reach it with a boat called the “Lichnos Express”, which you will find in the port of Parga.

Dodoni Sanctuary and Theatre

If you’re a history buff, don’t miss the Dodoni Sanctuary near the town of Ioannina. The journey takes just over an hour (75 kilometres) but is well worth the trip: there is an ancient site dedicated to the cult of Zeus that includes a superb theatre.

The island of Lefkada has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Ionian Sea! The good thing about it? The island is so close to the mainland that it is connected by a bridge, so you can get there by car. The north of the island is 85 kilometres away from Parga, a little less than an hour and a half drive. There are some beautiful beaches in the north of the island, but if you want to discover Porto Katsiki, Lefkada’s most famous beach, it’s an extra hour’s drive.

Best time to visit Parga in Greece: what’s the weather like?

Parga is lovely between April (after the Orthodox Easter) and October. Outside this period, you will find most activities closed. The area is still a pleasant place to hike, with mild temperatures in winter. The months of June till September are hot, with temperatures exceeding 30°C. Choose this period if you plan to spend your days at the beach, otherwise earlier or later in the season if you don’t want to be bothered by the heat.

WHICH PART OF LEFKADA TO CHOOSE?

One of the great advantages to staying on Lefkada is the easy transfer. No ferry is necessary to reach this island – it’s joined to the mainland by a causeway and the Rio-Antirrio bridge, meaning you can drive straight there in 30 minutes from nearby Preveza airport which is served by international and domestic flights. 

Tourist life on the island revolves around the twin resort towns of Nydri and Vassiliki which attract watersports fanatics thanks to their ideal conditions. 

The rest of the island is quiet and unspoilt. The appeal of Lefkada is the nature, the colours, the dramatic and unspoilt beaches with their white pebbles and electric blue waters. The pristine coast and perfect winds for exploring by various waterborne craft, with several tiny uninhabited islands to explore. The interior boasts green valleys dotted with traditional stone villages and leafy squares.

Overall, it has a laid back atmosphere with easy access and thrilling roads. It attracts Italians and northern Europeans in search of deserted beaches, as well as active travellers, sailors and adrenaline junkies who are spoilt for choice on Lefkada. As well as watersports there is plentiful hiking, mountain biking, hang-gliding, and paragliding.

The maistros northwesterly winds batter the west coast of the island (where you’ll find the most beautiful beaches) fairly consistently, to the delight of windsurfers and kitesurfers but not so much to the beach bums, which is one reason why Lefkada is not as busy as it could be. Over on the east side, small resort towns make the most of the sheltered bays and cool winds.

• NORTH – Lefkada Town, plus smart villas tucked away in green valleys. Sandy beaches in the north-west are suitable for families.
• SOUTH – home to Vassiliki, some pretty bays, and the sheer drops of Cape Lefkada
• EAST – the developed side; the most built-up stretch is between Lefkada Town and Nydri
• WEST – wild coast with stunning remote beaches and chalky white cliffs, few resort towns

LEFKADA TOWN

Most visitors pass through Lefkada Town in favour of Nydri or Vassiliki, but those who want to use it as a base will find an enjoyably laid back town with a typical Greek feel yet cosmopolitan outlook.

The island had a short Venetian rule 1684-1797, during which extensive olive oil production was encouraged. But little remains of the original Venetian architecture in Lefkada Town due to the earthquake of 1953.

Rebuilding has resulted in a low-lying town, with upper levels sometimes built in wood or clad in corrugated iron as protection from earthquakes. The town’s churches are a mix of Ionian and Western architecture. Pleasant backstreets are strung with bougainvillaea and lanterns.

Cultural highlights include:

• Archaeological Museum and Cultural Centre
• 14th century Venetian Agia Mavra Castle
• Phonograph and Folklore Museum
• Gyra (or Yira ) lagoon beach and western pier
• Open-air cinema on Faneromeni Street
• Frangoulis Distillery
• Angelos Sikelianos Museum

The town’s main commercial is the main streets leading off Patia Ayio Spyridhonous, and the waterfront Sikelianos which lined with tavernas and ouzeries and cafes. Golemi Marina is thriving and popular.

You’ll find some accommodation at the main town beach Aghios Ioannis (or Aiyannis ) beach which is 1-2km out of town. The beach is sandy but also windy and a popular wind/kitesurfing hub, centred around Milos Beach Club – a renovated windmill which transforms into a club by night. The beach is several miles long and dotted with a few places to eat and drink. The northern end is calmer, especially in the mornings. 

During the summer months, the town hosts the Lefkada Festival of Music, Arts, Literature and Dance.

STAY IN LEFKADA TOWN

There’s not an overabundance of places to stay in Lefkada Town. 

At the upper end,  check out the large resort-style Ionian Star which is centrally located and has a pool and sea views. 

Mid-range options include the fresh boutique vibes at Allure Central and the Secret Boutique Hotel .

Slightly more old-school Boschetto Hotel has comfortable rooms and elegant decor. Ianos Hotel is near the marina and has a large swimming pool and free parking.

Enjoy the historic charm at The Aigli .

On the north side, Hotel Lefkas is not far from the beach. 

For accommodation in the Aghios Ioannis area, Kastro Maistro has appealing apartments with sea views, but there are plenty of good value studios and apartments tucked behind the beach.

The Mousses Villas complex not far from town and perfect for families – it has a kids club and creche. It’s only bookable through Simpson Travel.

South of Lefkada Town you’ll find Kariotes beach. There are simple rooms at Artemis Pension and Kariotes Camping . 

Keep going south from Lefkada Town and you’ll hit the small fishing village of Ligia (also spelt Lygia or Liyia ). It’s not really a beach resort, though it does have a few clean pebble beaches.

But Ligia is a nice enough working village with some excellent fish tavernas. It’s on the main road so ideal for those who want to stay somewhere smaller but within striking distance of town. 

STAY IN LYGIA

Hotel Porto Ligia makes the most of its prime seafront position and good facilities. You can walk from your room to the pool and across the lawn to the sea. It’s within walking distance of Ligia village.

Try Avra for simple studios or Polyxenis for a traditional aparthotel.

Beyond Lygia is the similar village of Nikiana, home to a narrow shingle beach, several good hotels and a cluster of friendly waterfront tavernas. Lefkas Diving Centre is also based in the area. It has the same transport advantages as Lygia but is a bit prettier.

STAY IN NIKIANA

The best top-end hotel and suites in Nikiana are Crystal Waters Hotel , Ionian Blue Bungalows and Spa Resort , and Agni Studios .

To the south of Nikiana is the Porto Galini Seaside Resort and Spa , a one of the best resort hotels on the island, with its own quiet beach and sports facilities. 

On a budget? Check out Akorkaria Beach House , Nikoleta’s Studios , and clean and simple Gianni’s Studios .

Nydri is Lefkada’s main resort town (though it’s still pretty small, winding around one busy 2km road).

It’s a popular centre for yacht charters, flotillas and dinghy sailing in the area. Boats leave here for trips to Meganissi and the other satellite islands, including Skorpios – the Onassis island.

Nydri has the highest concentration of package tourism of all the towns in Lefkada. There is a small beach but there are better places to stay for that – the main one in Nydri is small and narrow, though there are some nice pebble beaches in the wider area.

But it’s the coastal scenery that’s the real draw here, as well as the accessibility of the area’s watersports and activities. Most of the town’s accommodation is close to the water and sea views/direct beach access are available.

And Nydri has a picturesque quayside with plenty of tavernas and bars to keep you occupied, and the harbour is lined with boats offering day tours. If the heat gets too much for you then head inland to cool off in the waterfall, a 45-minute walk.

STAY IN NYDRI

The swankiest place to stay in Nydri (and perhaps the whole island) is the sumptuous Villa Veneziano .

The George Hotel offers traditional Greek hospitality and updated rooms. Athos Hotel has a tree-lined bar and hot tub. 

The Palmyra Hotel is a comfortable classic, and you can walk straight into the water from Palmyra Beachfront Studios .

Also right on the beach is the popular Avra Beach Hotel .

VLIHO AND THE YENI PENINSULA

The next town along the coast is Vliho (or Vlycho ), a large natural bay which is mainly popular with passing yachts. Directly opposite is Geni, an ideal lunch stop with its pier-side tavernas set out like sirens to attract hungry sailors.

Beyond the few tavernas, there’s not much in Vlycha to speak of. It lacks accommodation but has mosquitos in abundance.

However, Vlycho marks the entrance to the Yeni Peninsula, where you will find the small Yeni village and some discrete villas and hotels tucked away within an easy drive of Nydri. 

The hotels to note on the Yeni Peninsula are Vlycho Bay Boutique Hotel and  Ilios Hotel and Villas . 

There are a few campsites in Dessimi Bay on the other side of the Yeni Peninsula – Santa Mavra Camping and Dessimi Bay Camping .

MIKROS GIALOS

One of the most attractive quiet resort villages is Mikros Gialos, which is south of Vliho on the other side of a hilly headland and close to a small village called Poros.

It’s a 3km walk downhill from Poros to the beach. It’s worth noting that the local bus stops at the village and doesn’t go as far as the beach.

Mikros Gialos is a quiet bay although you won’t find it empty as many park up here for the day. The wider bay around is called Rouda and also encompasses a few smaller bays.

The beach here is white and stony which lends the water a brilliant colour. It’s perfect for swimmers as there’s a warm bit in the middle (in summer, at least), but the sea is cooler at the edges where the freshwater runoff from the hills meets the sea. There are several smaller beaches in the area to explore.

It’s a 15-minute drive from here to Nidri. The coast continues along to Syvota, a pretty inlet popular with yachties.

Overlooking the beach is San Nicolas Resort , one of the best resort hotels on the island. The pool and balconies have stunning views. Rooms are decorated in fresh white and blue themes.

Right on the beach is the excellent value Rouda Bay Beach Hotel , with its prime seafront position and clean modern studios. Similar rooms and sea access can be found at the Captain Nick Hotel .

For the campers, there’s Poros Beach Camping .

A close rival to Nydri in terms of popularity (and wind) is Vassiliki, with its stunning bay scenery and prevailing north-westerlies much loved by windsurfers.

It’s a watersports hotspot and hub for the island’s seasonal workers which ensures a lively youthful vibe in summer, and it is the best place on Lefkada for nightlife.

However, it also feels the most commercial and gets pretty packed out in peak season. Accommodation is often block-booked by tour operators and windsurf schools.

Windsurfers will find consistent conditions as well as plenty of facilities – there are several windsurf centres based here and its an excellent place for tuition. Milos beach, just north, is popular with kitesurfers.

The main beach is nothing to write home about, so beach bums are better off heading to nearby Ponti beach or getting a bus to the wild west beaches like Porto Katsiki. Ponti is a quieter outpost of Vassiliki, about 20 minutes walk, and you can also find rooms there.

There used to be a ferry connection to the neighbouring island of Kefalonia but the port is currently closed for construction work.

Sappho Boutique Suites is the posh place to stay in Vassiliki, with several luxury suites that make the most of their ocean views. Each has a private plunge pool as well as access to a shared infinity pool

Vassiliki Bay Hotel is a solid choice for those looking for good value hotel comforts.

Budget Captain’s Studios is friendly and comfortable and located near the marina.

Centrally located Villa Delfini is another good spot for those on a budget.

If you don’t want to self cater, Nefeli Hotel and Ponti Beach Hotel are both based in Ponti right on the beach and are good value.

There’s a campsite too – Camping Vassiliki Beach .

There aren’t many resorts on Lefkada’s wild and wonderful west coast, but one place to stop is the small mountain village of Athani. As well as the great coastal views, it’s also the closest place for visiting Lefkada’s most beautiful beaches – Porto Katsiki and Egremni.

There’s a small smattering of tavernas and shops to service those who want to stop in the area.

There’s a popular taverna called Panorama where you will also find some rooms to rent. Porto Katsiki Studios is another option.

If you’re looking for villas with views there are options around here. Serenity Boutique Suites have an infinity pool to die for.

AGIOS NIKITAS

The main resort town on Lefkada’s stunning west coast is the pocket-sized Agios Nikitas, wedged into a bay between pine-clad hills. There’s a cluster of tavernas tumbling around a small pebble beach. It’s probably the prettiest place to stay on Lefkada – the main part of the village is car-free and it has an upmarket appeal – so perfect for couples and mature travellers.  

The downsides are that it doesn’t get the evening sun, and it’s not best placed for exploring the island. There are infrequent buses to Lefkada Town. 

However, you can hop on a boat to the nearby sandy beaches at Tsoukalades or Milos, or Pefkoulia for excellent swimming.

Santa Marina is a large spacious resort hotel but it’s a bit of a trek down to the main village.

If you’re looking for simple studios Elena Rooms or Maria Filippa which are both central and close to the beach.

There are plenty of villas up in the hills making the most of those views.

Boeing west coast factory workers going on strike after 96% vote for walkout.

Boeing’s US West Coast factory workers will walk off the job after 96% voted on Thursday in favor of a strike, halting production of the planemaker’s strongest-selling jet as it wrestles with chronic output delays and mounting debt.

The workers’ first strike since 2008 will start at midnight Pacific time on Friday.

This comes just weeks after new CEO Kelly Ortberg was brought on in August to restore faith in the planemaker after a door panel blew off a near-new 737 MAX jet in mid-air in January.

Roughly 30,000 workers who produce Boeing’s 737 MAX, and other jets in the Seattle and Portland areas were voting on their first full contract in 16 years.

Under complicated rules set by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), at least two-thirds of the unionized workers had to vote in favor of a strike for a stoppage to begin and the contract to be rejected.

Boeing workers voted 96% in favor of striking and 94.6% to reject the agreement.

The deal included a general wage increase of 25%, a $3,000 signing bonus and a pledge to build Boeing’s next commercial jet in the Seattle area, provided the program is launched within the four years of the contract.

Although IAM leadership recommended last Sunday that its members accept the contract, many workers had responded angrily, arguing for the originally demanded 40% pay rise and lamenting the loss of an annual bonus.

On Wednesday, Ortberg sent a letter to workers, urging them to approve the deal.

Some workers were already preparing for picket lines that day, with one union member leaving a Wednesday meeting carrying a placard under her arm that read: “On Strike Against Boeing.”
