These are some suggested train experiences for your Canadian adventure. 

Rocky Mountaineer, Daylight train 

The Rocky Mountaineer winds through British Columbia and Alberta and stops in Jasper, Lake Louise, Banff, Vancouver, Whistler, Quesnel and Kamloops. There are three main train routes, including the Canadian Rockies train Vancouver to Banff . The train only runs during the daytime and from April to October (start and end dates vary annually). Large windows, an outdoor platform, and glass-dome coaches are perfect for sightseeing.

SilverLeaf and GoldLeaf are the two service levels on Rocky Mountaineer.  

In SilverLeaf, guests have assigned seats in a single-level dome car. Breakfast and lunch are served to guests at their seat, with complimentary snacks and beverages available throughout the day.  

In GoldLeaf , guests have assigned seats in a bi-level dome car. Seating is on the top level and a dining room is on the lower level. Breakfast and lunch are served in the dining room, with complimentary snacks and beverages available throughout the day.  

VIA Rail Train 

VIA Rail runs trains across Canada all year round. There are a few major train routes. The Canadian train passes through the Canadian Rockies, stopping at Jasper on its way to Vancouver from Toronto (or vice versa). On VIA Rail, you can also go to Prince Rupert, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec and Halifax. VIA Rail offers daylight and overnight sleeper train experiences.

#2 Travel tip: Winter train trip

VIA Rail trains operate year-round. So, if you’re looking to visit the Canadian Rockies in winter, you can travel to Jasper by sleeper train from Vancouver or Toronto.

Sleeper Train, VIA Rail 

One option for your Canadian Rockies train travel is the Sleeper train. Sleeper Class is available on The Canadian between Vancouver and Toronto. You can go all the way from coast to coast or choose to stop in Jasper or Winnipeg. Jasper is where you would disembark for your Canadian Rockies adventure.

There are three service levels on The Canadian train: Economy, Sleeper Plus, and Prestige. Both Sleeper Plus and Prestige classes are recommended if you are spending a long time on the train. Sleeper Plus includes a private berth or a cabin with bunk beds. Hot meals are served in the dining car of the train, and these are included throughout your journey. Prestige Class is a luxury service that includes priority meal reservations, afternoon tapas, snacks, drinks, meals, and more. Prestige Class cabins are larger than Sleeper Plus cabins and feature a lower bed for two. Prestige guests also have a dedicated concierge. Both Sleeper Plus and Prestige guests have access to the train’s viewing cars.

If you want to extend your stay in Canada, you can also sleep on board The Ocean train. This VIA Rail train travels between the provinces of Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

Both sleeper train routes are available all year long.

Alaska Cruise - suggested add-on 

Canadian Rockies train tours from Vancouver can combine with an Alaska Cruise. The rail part of your trip can come before or after your Alaska cruise. There are two types of cruise ships. Choose a larger, more luxurious vessel or a smaller ship that allows you to visit more coves and inlets. There is not enough time to visit the Sanctuary during your free time; we recommend enjoying the mountain town of Banff.

The tour typically begins early at around 7:30 am for breakfast, includes a 12-13 hour day with a rotation of two-hour stops for either restroom breaks or sightseeing. The terrain can involve considerable walking, often uphill and downhill.

It's important for guests to carry any necessary personal medication as access to pharmacies or hospitals could be limited depending on the location.

Day 1: Arrive in Calgary

Welcome to one of North America’s most rugged and beautiful cities, Calgary. Known for its cowboys and spectacular beauty, Calgary was brought to the world’s attention during the 1988 Winter Olympics. Meet your Tour Manager in the hotel lobby at 6:00 p.m. for a welcome dinner. Meal: D

Day 2: Calgary Tower and Heritage Park

Get to know Calgary on a panoramic sightseeing tour of the city. Get your first glimpse of the Canadian Rockies from high atop the 626-foot tall Calgary Tower. Then, take a step back into Canada’s colorful past at Heritage Park. Here you will learn about life as a 19th-century fur-trader or old-fashioned blacksmith. In the Gasoline Alley Museum, admire the collection of 1908 REO Autobuggies and 1912 Buicks, or stroll through Heritage Town Square and chat with the locals in their traditional clothing. Then, depart for Banff and your hotel. Meals: B, D

Day 3: Banff Sightseeing

Today, explore Canada’s first National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site, Banff. See Bow Falls and Tunnel Mountain before taking the gondola ride in enclosed cars to the peak of Sulphur Mountain for a spectacular panoramic view of the village and valley below. Later, enjoy free time in the quiet town of Banff for shopping in the many shops and boutiques. Meals: B, D

Day 4: Ride the Rocky Mountaineer to Kamloops

Board the Rocky Mountaineer in Silver Leaf Class and begin the journey westward. Departing Banff National Park the train will travel through the unique Spiral Tunnels in Yoho National Park, a remarkable engineering achievement. You will also cross the Continental Divide. Beyond Craigellachie is Rogers Pass with its tunnels, glistening glaciers, and snow-capped mountains. After Craigellachie, where the “last spike” was driven completing the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885, you pass through the vast ranchlands to Shuswap Lake. Overnight in Kamloops. Meals: B, L

Day 5: Rocky Mountaineer to Vancouver

Upon leaving the city of Kamloops the train will follow the Thompson River through the Fraser Canyon. One of the canyon’s true highlights is Hell’s Gate, where you will watch water torrent past the canyon’s walls at its narrowest point. En route you will pass through the scenic Fraser Canyon and the fertile Fraser Valley. The Rocky Mountaineer takes you into the interior of British Columbia to the cosmopolitan city of Vancouver. Meals: B, L

Day 6: Vancouver Sightseeing and Harbour Cruise

Vancouver, its dramatic location between the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, is sure to inspire you. Enjoy an included sightseeing tour to see Vancouver’s downtown core, the spectacular North Shore and beautiful Stanley Park. After your included lunch, embark on a scenic sightseeing cruise through Canada’s “Gateway to the Pacific”- the Burrard Inlet. You will get up close to many of Vancouver’s most famous landmarks. Cruise past the famous Stanley Park, the busy cruise ship terminals, the spectacular city skyline, historic Gastown, the breathtaking North Shore Mountains and more. Meals: B, L

Day 7: Museum of Anthropology, Granville Island and Gulf of Georgia Cannery

Begin the day at the Museum of Anthropology renowned for its world arts and cultures and works by the First Nation bands. Spend time at Granville Island’s public market, the crown jewel of the island. This outdoor market features colourful food, produce stores, handcrafted products and unique gifts. Later visit the Gulf of Georgia Cannery. Built in 1894 this National Historic Site echoes the days of when British Columbia was a leading salmon producer. Meals: B, D

Day 8: Return Home

Following breakfast, depart with a group transfer to the Vancouver International Airport for flights out after 12:00 p.m. Meal: B

The current exchange rate is $0.80 USD = $1 CAD. Gratuities should be paid in the local currency whenever possible. Like the USA, Canada uses 110 volts, 60 Hz. It is not necessary to use an adaptor or converter with appliances and devices that you use in the US. Please check with your carrier regarding cell phone service and fees.

Final Payment:

Final Payment is due to Tauck 60 days before departure for lands trips, and 120 days before departure for cruises and rail journeys. If your deposit was made by credit card, final payment will be automatic unless you opted out at time of booking. Bookings without full payment at this time may be subject to cancellation without notice. Failure to make payment will be a considered a cancellation by the guest and all applicable cancellation fees will apply.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

• Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
• Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement for up to $5,000 to catch up to your tour or return home.
• Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
• Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip. 
• Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.

Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $329

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

60 days or more before departure = $350 per person

59-8 days before departure = $600 per person

7-1 days before departure = $900 per person

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control,  Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Note:  All Guests, regardless of residency, who book a Tauck journey have the option of purchasing the Cancellation Fee Waiver provided by Tauck in the event they need to cancel their trip after making their reservations. Tauck's Guest Protection, which includes both the Cancellation Fee Waiver and the Travel Insurance Benefits and Assistance Services described above, is not available to residents of Puerto Rico.

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

Regarding Oxygen

If you require portable oxygen while traveling, you will be responsible for any maintenance and operation that the tank requires while on tour, and for locating health facilities on the tour route that can perform tank maintenance. If you choose to bring a tank on tour, you will need to provide us the exact specifications of the tank, including size, model, and all components that accompany it prior to booking the tour to determine motor coach storage capabilities. You may inquire about having them filled at a hospital in Banff or Jasper (there is no hospital in Lake Louise), but tank maintenance facilities are limited in the Canadian Rockies.

Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches. Local legislation in Canada varies widely with respect to smoking. Alberta and British Columbia currently ban smoking in all public places and set restrictions on smoking within certain distances of public doorways, windows and air intakes.

VACCINATIONS  

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally, no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Canada. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally , please contact a Canadian embassy or consulate to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel. 

To fully enjoy this active itinerary, you should have good health and be able to walk reasonable distances over uneven terrain, as some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. This tour is moderately paced, and aside from walking on the glacier on Day 5 and around the hotels, if you have careful balance and no severe problem walking, then you should have an enjoyable journey. Other optional physical activities such as golf, biking and mountaineering are available for anyone who wishes and, of course, is able to partake in such activities.

We regret that we cannot provide you with individual assistance for walking, dining or other personal needs. If you need such assistance, you must be accompanied by an able companion who will help you.

Regarding Wheelchairs

If you require a wheelchair while traveling, you must meet the specifications of each of the tour's suppliers, including the motor coach and SnoCoach. You may bring a collapsible, lightweight wheelchair on tour that weighs less than 100 lbs (45.4 kg), but you must be able to maneuver on and off each conveyance with limited assistance. We strongly recommend that if you require a wheelchair for travel or have moderate to severe difficulty walking that you bring a companion to assist you. Before you book this tour, you will need to provide us with the exact specifications of the wheelchair, including size, model, and all components that accompany it to determine its motor coach storage capabilities.

Weather and Travel Gear

The summer weather in the Canadian Rockies can change instantly and is often unpredictable as in any mountainous region. From June through early September, normal temperatures range from 50 to 80˚F (10 to 27˚C). Local conditions change radically from one valley to the next, or change during the course of the day. Due to its geographic location, Western Canada generally has long hours of daylight and, in mid-summer, the sun will rise as early as 5:00 AM and set as late as 10:00 PM. In the early spring and fall, daylight hours average about 14 hours, from 6:30 AM until 8:30 PM. Rainfall is heavier by the ocean in Vancouver and lighter in the interior portions of the Canadian Rockies.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Select a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering in unpredictable mountain temperatures. During the day, casual, comfortable clothing is recommended. Casual resort attire is appropriate for this itinerary, and some optional dining rooms recommend jackets for gentleman, but they are not required.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. Irons and ironing boards are available upon request. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are also available for a fee at all the hotels on this itinerary.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to the Canadian Rockies:

• Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
• An optional jacket and tie for men
• Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
• Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
• A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
• Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
• Insect repellent
• Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
• Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
• Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
• Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
• Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
• Daypack for camera equipment
• Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
• Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Each child 17 and under will be sent a complimentary backpack from Tauck Bridges! If the child resides in the continental United States, the backpack will be sent to his or her home approximately two weeks prior to the tour departure date (please note backpacks cannot be sent to P.O. boxes). If the child resides outside of the continental U.S., including Hawaii and Alaska, the backpack will be waiting on arrival at the first hotel on your itinerary.

When it comes to the best train trips in the world, it’s as much about the transportation as the destination

Gourmet meals…doting service… postcard scenery worth writing home about. Thanks to private luxury trains, coddled travelers today can relive the golden age of rail travel on the best train trips in far-flung corners of the world—from Russia’s Far East to the southern tip of Africa.

Here are six train adventures that can be incorporated into an itinerary—or constitute the entire trip. All qualify for bragging rights.

1. Rocky Mountaineer, Canada

As the natural wonders of British Columbia and Alberta unfold outside the oversized windows, passengers take it all in from the plush reclining seats of this luxury tourist train . Each of the glass-domed cars boasts an outdoor viewing area as well, making this one of the best train trips for those looking to take in the vast grandeur of western Canada.

On all three routes between Vancouver and the Canadian Rockies vacation magnets of Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper, guests track the ever-changing landscapes of geological eye-poppers, mighty waterfalls and turquoise, glacier-fed lakes as the Rocky Mountaineer weaves alongside steep canyons and through lush forests. The train travels only during the day, and there are no sleeper cars. The two-day trip includes a hotel night in Kamloops.

Rocky Mountaineer

Passengers have a choice of starting in Vancouver or in Jasper, Banff or Lake Louise. Packages that combine the rail journey with sightseeing and several hotel nights in the Rockies are available. Operating between April and October, the train is a popular extension to an Alaska cruise.

The Rocky Mountaineer offers two levels of service. GoldLeaf Service uses bi-level cars, and meals are served in a lower-level dining room. Passengers eat at their seats in the single-level SilverLeaf Service coaches. Both options include complimentary beverages and snacks. ( rockymountaineer.com )

2. Palace on Wheels, India

Be pampered by turban-wearing attendants as you travel in regal splendor through India’s Rajasthan region, a land dotted with the palatial estates of maharajas. Seven-night roundtrips from New Delhi aboard the luxurious Palace on Wheels visit Rajasthani cities like Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur. Also included is Agra, home of the Taj Mahal. The train moves by night, and every morning you wake up to a new destination, making it one of the best train trips for efficiency and comfort.

Each of the 14 train coaches, named for a princely estate, has four twin-bedded chambers accented with ethnic Rajasthani décor. Cabins feature baths with hot and cold running water, wall-to-wall carpeting and a large window. Guests can socialize or enjoy a cup of tea in the lounge on each coach. The two restaurant cars serve Indian, Continental and Chinese cuisine; each has a lounge and bar. Sightseeing excursions feature royal palaces, historic forts, gardens and museums. At most stops there is free time for shopping.

A tour from the city of Sawai Madhopur goes to Ranthambore National Park, a wildlife sanctuary famous for its tigers. The week-long adventures leave New Delhi every Wednesday night from September to April. The train is a joint venture between the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation and Indian Railways. 3. The Blue Train, South Africa

An icon in South Africa for more than 70 years, the Blue Train provides an indulgent experience on a three-day/two-night trip between Pretoria and Cape Town. The 54-hour journey covers 994 miles.

Africa’s leading luxury train, consisting of 14 to 19 carriages, provides a window onto landscapes that range from farmlands and vineyards to rugged mountains, semiarid deserts, and gold- and diamond-mining operations. On the second day, passengers get off the train in Kimberley for an excursion to the Big Hole (one of the deepest excavated cavities on earth) and adjacent Kimberley Mine Museum, which documents the country’s first-ever discovery of diamond reserves.

Dinner in the Blue Train’s dining car is an elegant, coat-and-tie affair, while the lounge car is the place for high tea and snacks. Cuban cigars are available in the club car lounge, the only place where smoking is permitted. At the rear of the train, the observation car features windows on three sides.

Each cabin on the Blue Train has a marble-decorated bath with shower or tub and gold-plated fittings. A lounge area by day, the cabin is converted into a bedroom at night. The Blue Train is owned by Transnet, a state-owned company. ( bluetrain.co.za )

4. Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

Europe’s most storied train, featured in movies and novels aplenty, whisks passengers on a journey that reflects the glamor and opulence of the golden age of travel. Vintage carriages from the 1920s and ’30s, exquisitely restored to their Art Deco splendor, gleam with polished woods, sumptuous upholstery and antique fixtures. Fine dining is on the menu in three elegant restaurants, and a pianist serenades on a baby grand in the bar car.

The classic one-night trip from London or Paris to Venice on this private luxury train covers a broad swath of Europe, including idyllic French countryside and fairy-tale Swiss valleys. Other routes from London or Paris visit Berlin, Vienna, Budapest and Prague; rail/hotel packages are available. The train operates from March to December.

Twin cabins, rich in Art Deco craftsmanship, are furnished with plush sofas in a daytime sitting area that is transformed into upper and lower berths at night. Each cabin has a washbasin, and there is a WC at the end of each sleeping car. Accommodations also include single cabins and fancy suites.

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is owned by Belmond Ltd., a London-based company that operates hotels, restaurants, tourist trains and river cruises in Europe and beyond. Belmond also owns the Eastern & Oriental Express, which makes two- and three-night trips between Bangkok and Singapore. ( belmond.com )

5. Belmond Royal Scotsman, Scotland

Passengers aboard this luxury train, owned by the same London-based company as the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, indulge in fine food and accommodations while traveling through the Scottish Highlands on two- to seven-night journeys from Edinburgh. From windows and the open-air veranda, they drink in panoramas of glens and lochs, soaring peaks and deep valleys, quaint villages and hilltop castles. Edwardian country-house ambiance and décor prevail.

Royal Scotsman

Cabins lined with rich marquetry feature plush beds fitted with Scottish woolens and tartans, a bathroom with shower, windows that open, ceiling fans and heating controls. There are two elegant, mahogany-paneled dining cars and a bar car. Candlelit dinners feature wild salmon and seasonal seafood from Scottish waters, game from Scotland’s forests and produce from Scottish farms. One of the 10 carriages has a spa with two treatment rooms, making this one of the best train trips for passengers to pamper themselves.

A wide variety of itineraries are available between mid-April and mid-October. Towns visited might include Dundee, St. Andrews, Inverness and Fort William, to name a few. Excursions range from castles and museums to tours and tastings at Scotland’s famous whisky distilleries. A Loch Ness cruise gives passengers a chance to spot the Loch Ness Monster. Other outings might be star-gazing with an astronomer, a truffle-making class with a chocolatier or a falconry demonstration. 6. Trans-Siberian Railway, Russia

Offering an epic ride across Russia, the longest railroad line in the world spans 5,772 miles and seven time zones. On the trip between east and west, the train passes over the Urals, weaves through taiga forests, speeds across seemingly endless steppes and travels alongside Siberia’s Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest freshwater lake.

The public train takes seven days to complete the journey between Moscow and Vladivostok on the Pacific Coast in Russia’s Far East. But many tourists opt for a private luxury train on the Trans-Siberian route, going with a North American tour operator’s two- or three-week package that includes off-rail excursions along the way and hotel stays before and after. The wealth of options makes this not only one of the best train trips in the world, but the best way to see the vast expanses of Russia.

Seattle-based MIR Corporation, for example, offers tours (nine to 22 days) between Moscow and Vladivostok or Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on the posh Golden Eagle, and between Moscow and Beijing or the stylish Tsar’s Gold. ( mircorp.com )

Canadian Rockies RV Camping: Majestic Must-Sees a Breathtaking Adventure!

Canadian Rockies RV camping in the region spanning British Columbia and Alberta is nothing short of spectacular, especially where the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) traverses the Continental Divide. In just a 286 km stretch (178 miles) of Highway 1, lie these three magnificent Canadian National Parks from West to East:

Mount Revelstoke National Park

Yoho national park, banff national park.

I bet you’ve heard of Banff National Park, arguably a crown jewel of the Parks Canada system. But, you may not be so familiar with Revelstoke and Yoho National Parks. While these smaller gems may not be on every RVer’s radar, each one boasts its own vast wilderness of stunning scenery, abundant wildlife, and great RV campgrounds. And, with all three of these amazing national parks within a 3 ½ hour stretch of Highway 1, visiting them is an RVer’s bucket list trifecta!

Author’s Note : Yes, there is a fourth fantastic National Park along this route that I didn’t forget: Glacier National Park. It lies between the Revelstoke and Yoho parks, and is bisected by picturesque and historic Rogers Pass on Highway 1. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to explore Glacier…so we’ll just have to go back!

Find the Perfect Season: When to Plan Your Canadian Rockies RV Adventure

Okay, so there may not be a “perfect” season for every RVer’s Canadian Rockies RV camping adventure. Heck, some intrepid RVers among us love camping and RVing in the chill of snowy winters! But subjectively, the “shoulder seasons” (think late spring and early fall camping ) might be some of the best times to explore this region. Visiting before or after the peak summer season may afford RVers less crowds, better parking, and cooler weather for day hikes bliss. 

Summer can be great, too, as long as you don’t mind more crowded parks, roadways, and trails.

And while you may think simply being so far north would mean no heat waves, don’t count on it. During our time in Banff National Park during late August, we were surprised by daytime temps hovering around 90 F for several days!

So, just as you’ll want to be prepared for chilly temperatures in the spring and fall, be prepared for hot weather during the peak summer months. And as with all mountainous regions, you’ll want to keep an eye on weather conditions. Winter snows at higher elevations can linger into the summer months. Likewise, snow and cold can descend earlier in the fall than you might think.

Mount Revelstoke National Park: Mountain Majesty

On our Canadian Rockies RV camping trip across the Trans-Canada Highway, we came upon Mount Revelstoke National Park first. 

Why it’s Special

Revelstoke boasts the 6,375-foot Mount Revelstoke at its core. Miles of hiking trails take you through vibrant alpine meadows and up to the summit, where you’ll enjoy stunning mountain vistas. Wildlife is abundant, particularly black bears in the spring. You may also catch views of moose, mountain goats, coyotes, the elusive pine marten, and many species of birds.

Must-See Sights

• Mount Revelstoke Summit and Fire Lookout Cabin. Built in 1927, and operational until 1988, the restored historic cupola-style cabin is a designated Federal Heritage Building. 
• Meadows in the Sky Parkway. The Parkway starts just outside the village of Revelstoke on Highway 1. It winds its way up an impressive series of at least a dozen classic switchbacks toward the summit. RV’s over 7.9 meters (26 feet) and all trailers are prohibited.
• Giant Cedars Boardwalk. This trail, off Highway 1 just East of Revelstoke, offers a short, easy and accessible trail great for families. It meanders through a grove of old-growth western red cedars, some over 500 years old.
• The City of Revelstoke. We loved strolling along the downtown streets with their variety of shops, restaurants, historic buildings, and local craft breweries.

RV Campgrounds

• Lamplighter Campground. A full-hookup RV park in Revelstoke with showers and toilets. Located a short way from downtown.
• Snowforest Campground . A great in-park location nestled in the forest and also near Revelstoke.
• Williamson Lake Campground. Conveniently near Revelstoke with great access to family fun on Williamson Lake.

Yoho National Park: Natural Wonders Await

Located halfway between Calgary and Revelstoke, Yoho National Park showcases exciting waterfalls and beautiful emerald lake waters. Hiking and paddling in Yoho is breathtaking.

• Emerald Lake. Explore the vibrant green/blue waters by canoe or kayak. Or, enjoy hiking and biking around this picture-perfect lake.
• Takakkaw Falls. With an 833-foot drop, this dramatic waterfall is the second highest in Canada. Experience its thundering cascades and cooling mist only a short walk from the parking area.
• Natural Bridge. A natural limestone arch formed by the Kicking Horse River. You can walk under it and marvel at its thousands of years in the making.
• Spiral Railroad Tunnels. Just a couple miles East on Highway 1, this engineering marvel has a storied history. The unique looping tunnels enable trains to negotiate the steep elevation changes of Kicking Horse Pass. 
• Kicking Horse Campground . A popular campground convenient to Highway 1 and nearby Emerald Lake. Offers dry-camping for all size rigs with views of the surrounding peaks.
• Monarch Campground. Small campground, without services, just off the highway on Yoho Valley Road, before Kicking Horse Campground.

Banff National Park: Crown Jewel of the Rockies

Spectacular mountain peaks surround the area with its diverse hiking trails and opportunities for wildlife viewing. Banff National Park also boasts iconic sights like Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Cascade Mountain, and Mt. Rundle.

• Lake Louise. It’s a short walk from the parking area to this beautiful lake surrounded by glaciers and stellar hiking trails. Check out Lake Agnes Tea House.
• Moraine Lake . Canoe on exquisite glacier-fed emerald waters surrounded by the majestic Valley of the Ten Peaks.
• Banff Gondola. Take this aerial ride to the Sulphur Mountain summit for stunning views of six mountain ranges, the Bow Valley, and the town of Banff far below.
• Johnston Canyon. A marvelous hike on a wide pathway through this awe inspiring river canyon. View both the Lower and Upper Falls before returning to the parking area. Bring your pup on this dog-friendly trail!
• Tunnel Mountain Village I & II Campgrounds. Convenient location within Banff townsite (free shuttle, bike, or walk to town). Huge campgrounds offering dry-camping in Village I and electric hook ups in Village II.
• Tunnel Mountain Trailer Court Campground . Large campground offering full-hookup sites with easy access. 10 minutes from downtown Banff via free shuttle, biking or walking.
• Two Jack Lakeside Campground. Picturesque setting on the shores of Two Jack Lake. Dry-camping with easy access to the lake and hiking trails.

Helpful Tips

👉 Lake Louise/Moraine Lake Access: Parking can be near impossible at Lake Louise! And, private vehicles are prohibited from Lake Louise up to Moraine Lake (shuttle only). Do yourself a favor and reserve a shuttle ticket from the Lake Louise Ski Resort. It takes you to Lake Louise and the shuttle to Moraine Lake. Let them do the driving and parking for you.

Conquering the Parks Canada Reservation System: A Guide for RVers

For your Canadian Rockies RV camping adventure, the Parks Canada Reservation System is where you’ll book your sites…hopefully. Like nearly all national parks in the U.S. and Canada, making reservations well in advance is recommended. 

It can be a daunting process, especially when you are number 14,638 in the reservation queue! It may seem impossible to book your site, but it’s not. Take deep breaths, settle in with a good cup of coffee or tea, and use these tips to secure your spot:
