Ratings and Reviews

Ok, but can’t get boarding passes

The app just refuse to let me have my boarding pass on my phone like every competitor does, there’s a place for it but it tells me I have to go to the counter despite having checked in. I give it a few stars since at least it let me complete check in, in the past it would not even let me check in. I tried to change seats post check in and it won’t let me, despite not having boarding passes.

Terrible Airline, Terrible App

Booking a flight that’s operated by another airline is a nightmare. You can’t check-in and get your boarding pass through the app because none of the information has been properly received and loaded by Westjet. The app (and the website) just stalls forever. Only way you’ll check-in successfully is in person at the airport. Once you do have your ticket and try to load in your itinerary in the app, good luck trying to get to any other menu. Can’t change your flight, can’t change your seats, etc. because those pages won’t load. Only pages that load are the purchase-required areas such as the menu (go figure). Avoid this app and this airline if you can.

Worked great

When I got this app I was really worried that I wouldn’t check in or that it wouldn’t work cause the reviews but surprisingly it worked just fine! I was able to check in, I was able to watch movies on the app too. It worked perfectly! Advice to others: When trying to check in or trying to go back into the check in after checking in, tap the button multiple times to have the check in load up.

When life happens and you need to cancel a flight, we all know that the process can be both expensive and frustrating.

If you have booked your flight with WestJet and need to cancel, you’re in the right place. Here’s all the information you need to navigate their cancellation and change policies to help you save time and money!

WestJet’s Cancellation Policy: Flights Paid With Cash or Points

All customers have  24 hours  from the time of their original booking to cancel their reservation without being charged a  cancellation fee , regardless of the fare selected.

WestJet does not allow cancellation to Basic tickets unless the cancellation was made within the 24-hour window from booking.

After the initial 24-hour window, the fee to cancel an Econo ticket with WestJet depends on the route you’re flying and the number of days before your flight departs.

Canceling a flight within Canada will cost $CA50-$59 (~$35-$41) if the flight is more than 60 days away, and CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) if the flight is less than 60 days away.

If the flight is between Europe and Canada the fee is CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) if it is more than 60 days away, and CA$250-$295 (~$174-$205) if it is less than 60 days away.

All other flights are CA$50-$59 (~$35-$41) for flights more than 60 days away, and CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) for flights less than 60 days away.

If you’ve purchased an Econo Flex ticket, there is no charge to cancel a flight within Canada — regardless of the timeframe.

The fee for flights between Europe and Canada is CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) if it is more than 60 days away, and CA$250-$295 (~$174-$205) if it is less than 60 days away.

For all other flights, the fee is CA$25-$30 (~$17-$21) for flights more than 60 days away, and CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) for flights less than 60 days away.

For those who have purchased a Premium ticket, canceling a flight within Canada will cost CA$50-$59 (~$35-$41) if the flight is more than 60 days away, and CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) if the flight is less than 60 days away.

For any other flight, the fee is CA$50-$59 (~$35-$41) for flights more than 60 days away, and CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) for flights less than 60 days away.

Finally, those that have purchases a Business ticket will need to pay CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) to cancel a flight within Canada — regardless of the timeframe.

The fee for flights between Canada and Europe is CA$600-$708 (~$417-$492) — regardless of the timeframe.

For all other flights, the cancellation fee is CA$50-$59 (~$35-$41) for flights more than 60 days away, and CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) for flights less than 60 days away.

WestJet does not offer a typical award program that you’re probably used to. You do not earn miles, and there is no award chart to base your redemptions on. Instead, WestJet offers a rebate-type program where funds are deposited into your WestJet Travel Bank each time you fly that can later be redeemed for future flights.

So, instead of earning 1,000 award miles for a flight, you might earn $10 that gets deposited in your Travel Bank. This $10 can then be redeemed for $10 off your next flight. So how does this apply to cancellation fees?

The cancellation fee for your “award ticket,” like with the above options, will depend on what type of ticket you buy with your Travel Bank funds, along with where you are traveling to and how soon the flight departs.

For example, if you spend $200 of the funds in your Travel Bank to book an Econo ticket between Toronto and Vancouver, and you cancel more than 60 days before the flight departs, your cancellation fee would be CA$50-$59 (~$35-$41).

Hot Tip:  For those who need more information about canceling award tickets, explore our guide on canceling award tickets , including information on over 30 carriers, to learn more.

WestJet’s Flight Change Policy

WestJet Plane Flying

All customers have  24 hours from the time of their original booking to change their reservation without being charged a change fee, regardless of the fare selected.

Similar to the cancellation policy, WestJet does not allow those with Basic tickets to make any changes to their flight after the initial 24-hour window from booking.

If it has been more than 24 hours since you booked your Econo ticket, you can still make changes but the fee will depend on the route and number of days until your flight.

Flights within Canada can be changed for CA$50-$59 (~$35-$41) if the flight is scheduled in more than 60 days, and CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) if it is less than 60 days away.

Flights from Canada to Europe can be changed for CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) if the flight is more than 60 days away, and CA$250-$259 (~$174-$205) if the flight is less than 60 days away.

For all other flights, the change fee is CA$50-$59 (~$35-$41) if the flight is more than 60 days away, and CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) if it is less than 60 days away.

Those that have purchased an Econo Flex ticket for a flight within Canada can make changes to their flight without paying any additional fees.

If your Econo Flex ticket is between Canada and Europe, the change fee is CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) for flights more than 60 days away, and CA$250-$259 (~$174-$205) for flights less than 60 days away.

For any other flight routes, the change fee is CA$25-$30 (~$17-$21) for flights more than 60 days away and CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) for flights less than 60 days away.

For Premium Tickets on a flight within Canada, the change fee is CA$50-$59 (~$35-$41) for flights more than 60 days away, and CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) for flights less than 60 days away.

If your flight is between Canada and Europe, the change fee is CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) for flights departing in more than 60 days, and CA$250-$295 (~$174-$205) for flights departing in less than 60 days.

Any other flight routes are subject to change fees of CA$50-$59 (~$35-$41) for flights more than 60 days away, and CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) for flights less than 6 days away.

Lastly, business tickets within Canada can be changed for CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) — regardless of the number of days before the flight departs.

Flights between Canada and Europe can be changed for CA$400-$472 (~$278-$328) — again, regardless of the number of days until the flight.

All other flights will have a change fee of CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) no matter when the flight is scheduled.

As with cancellations, the fee for changing your award ticket depends entirely on what type of ticket you purchased with your Travel Bank funds.

Hot Tip:  Keep in mind that if you’re changing a flight to a more expensive option, you will need to pay the difference in fare.

Same-Day Changes

WestJet also allows same-day changes for all ticket types besides Basic tickets. The charge for doing so varies on the ticket type and destination.

Same-day changes for Econo tickets cost CA$150-$177 (~$104-$123) for flights within Canada, CA$250-$295 (~$174-$205) on flights between Canada and Europe, and CA$150-$177 (~$104-$123) on all other flights.

Same-day changes for Econo Flex tickets are free for flights within Canada, CA$250-$259 (~$174-$205) for flights between Canada and Europe, and CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) for all other flights.

A same-day change for a Premium ticket is CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) for flights within Canada, CA$250-$295 (~$174-$205) for flights between Canada and Europe, and CA$100-$118 (~$70-$82) on all other flights.

Lastly, those with business class ticket can make same-day changes for free, regardless of their flight destination.

The same-day change fee for your award ticket will be based on what type of ticket you purchased with your WestJet Travel Bank funds.

Step 1: First, log into your account on the WestJet homepage and select Manage Bookings .

WestJet Manage Booking

Step 2: Select which booking you would like to cancel, then click the Cancel link.

Step 3:  Once your cancellation has been finalized, a confirmation email will be sent to the email you provided at the time of booking, and the remaining funds after any cancellation fees will be deposited into your WestJet Travel Bank.

The WestJet Travel Bank is an easy-to-use account where travel credits resulting from non-refundable ticket changes, cancellations, or service credits are held. These travel credits are kept in your Travel Bank until you use them to pay for future travel.

To use your Travel Bank funds, you first need to sign in to your WestJet Rewards account. When you reach the payment page of a flight booking, you will be given the option to use your Travel Bank credits or another form of payment.

Dealing with the need to cancel a flight can be difficult, but knowing the rules and guidelines around each ticket type can really help if you find yourself in a situation where you need to cancel. As always, it is also worth looking into which credit cards provide compensation for times like these. After all, the more you know — the better off you’ll be!

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if i cancel my westjet flight.

That largely depends on what type of ticket you’ve purchased, where you are flying, and how many days are remaining before your flight leaves.

Generally speaking, you’ll likely need to pay somewhere between CA$50-$295 (~$35-$205), unless it is a business ticket, in order to cancel your flight.

The remaining fare after the fee is deducted will be deposited into your WestJet Travel Bank.

Can I cancel my WestJet flight within 24 hours?

Yes — WestJet will allow you to cancel or make any changes to a flight that was booked less than 24 hours ago.

When do funds in my WestJet Travel Bank expire?

Travel Bank credits expire 1 year after the date they were deposited into your account.

Will WestJet waive my cancellation fees?

For the most part, getting your fees waived will depend on your reason for canceling the flight. If an immediate family member has died, you fall very ill, or have military orders, WestJet might waive your cancellation fees.

If you believe you have a legitimate reason to have your cancellation fees waived then it never hurts to call WestJet and ask!

How to book WestJet flights using points and miles

Gabrielle Bernardini

While frequent travelers are most likely familiar with Air Canada and its loyalty program, Aeroplan , one under-the-radar carrier that you may want to become acquainted with is WestJet . Though WestJet is not affiliated with any airline alliance, Canada's second-largest airline currently has 20 codeshare partners. With WestJet's partnerships, you can easily earn the airline's currency, WestJet dollars (equivalent to 1 Canadian dollar), when flying on partner airlines. WestJet dollars can then be used to book flights or vacation packages through the airline.

So, why would you want to fly with this particular carrier?

As some may deem WestJet a "budget" Canadian airline, the carrier soars above U.S.-based carriers Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines. Operating routes within the U.S., Canada, South America and Europe, WestJet may be a good (and sometimes cheaper) airline alternative.

Aside from finding great deals — like the round-trip, nonstop flight I booked from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to Calgary International Airport (YYC) in Alberta for just $292 — you can also use your points and miles to book WestJet flights. Keep reading to learn more about how you can book WestJet flights using your points and miles.

Book WestJet flights using a travel portal

Unlike other airline loyalty programs, you cannot transfer your transferable credit card rewards to your WestJet account and book flights using points and miles. However, there are a few ways to use your hard-earned rewards on WestJet flights.

westjet manage my trips

Book WestJet flights using the Chase Travel portal

Though it will not get you the best redemption on your Chase Ultimate Rewards points, you can book WestJet flights through the Chase Travel℠ portal . TPG values Chase points at 2.05 cents apiece when transferring to partner airline and hotel programs. When you redeem through the travel portal, you get a fixed value of 1.25 or 1.5 cents per point, depending on which Chase credit card you have.

Since I have the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , I can book WestJet flights through the travel portal at 1.5 cents apiece.

For example, this round-trip flight from FLL to YYC is currently $593 in basic economy when booking through the Chase Travel portal. Since my Ultimate Rewards points can be redeemed at a fixed value of 1.5 cents per point, it will cost me 39,501 points.

westjet manage my trips

With WestJet's dynamic pricing model and this trip being nonrefundable, I suggest you shop around and/or wait for a better redemption (i.e., the price of the ticket decreasing) if you want to save money.

Related: Who are the Chase transfer partners? Everything to know

Book WestJet flights using the American Express Travel portal

Similar to booking with the Chase Travel portal, you can book WestJet flights using the Amex Travel portal . TPG values Amex points at 2.0 cents per point when transferring the points to partner hotels and airlines. When you redeem your points through the Amex portal, you get a fixed value of 1 cent per point. Therefore, you may not be maximizing your Amex points by booking via the travel portal.

For example, if I wanted to book this round-trip WestJet flight, it would cost me $719.50 or 71,950 Membership Rewards points.

Book WestJet flights using Delta SkyMiles

One potentially valuable way to book WestJet flights using points and miles is through the Delta SkyMiles program . While most partner airlines booked with SkyMiles price dynamically, WestJet itineraries still follow a fixed price: 12,500 miles each way for flights from the U.S. to Canada (or vice versa).

Even better? Availability tends to be quite good.

For example, here's a one-way search for four passengers from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ) from mid-July to mid-August.

westjet manage my trips

And here's the same date range in the opposite direction.

westjet manage my trips

These flights can be quite pricey, so you may see redemption values significantly higher than our current valuation of Delta miles at 1.2 cents apiece.

This weeklong trip from Orlando to Toronto in June would set you back 25,000 SkyMiles plus $62.18 per passenger. The same flights through WestJet would be $681.91, giving you a redemption value of nearly 2.5 cents per mile.

westjet manage my trips

These prices even hold for connecting flights — like this one from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to Kelowna International Airport (YLW) in British Columbia's wine country.

westjet manage my trips

You can also use Delta miles on WestJet's international flights, but they're priced significantly higher than itineraries within North America. For example, round-trip flights from Toronto to the United Kingdom are priced at 84,000 miles plus $200, while round-trip, nonstop flights from Calgary International Airport (YYC) to Seoul, South Korea's Incheon International Airport (ICN) start at 140,000 miles.

Remember that, as of Jan. 1, partner award tickets booked with Delta SkyMiles count toward earning elite status . You'll receive 1 Medallion Qualification Dollar for every 100 miles redeemed — so a round-trip flight from the U.S. to Canada on WestJet would earn 250 MQDs. Sadly, these reservations aren't eligible for the TakeOff 15 discount for booking Delta-operated award flights if you have certain Delta credit cards .

If you already have Medallion status, you're eligible for several perks when traveling on WestJet, including priority check-in and extra baggage allowance. Gold, Platinum and Diamond Medallion members can even select preferred seats at no additional cost.

Use Capital One miles to cover your WestJet flight

Capital One has more than 15 airline and hotel partners, and one perk of holding a Capital One credit card is the option to redeem your miles to cover your recent travel purchases. Yes, you can book a flight with your Capital One credit card and then redeem your miles at a fixed value of 1 cent per mile.

If you want to redeem your Capital One miles for recent travel, click on "Cover travel purchases," and you'll be taken to a screen with all of your eligible travel purchases made within the last 90 days. Then, decide which travel expenses you would like to offset with your miles.

You can choose to either approve the redemption entirely or edit the amount of miles you would like to use to cover part of your travel.

Best credit cards to book WestJet flights

If you're not a Canadian citizen, you cannot open a cobranded WestJet credit card. However, there are transferable rewards credit cards that you can use to book a WestJet flight. Here are a few of our favorite cards:

Chase Sapphire Reserve® ($550 annual fee):

  • Current offer: Earn 75,000 Ultimate Rewards points after you spend $4,000 in the first three months of account opening.
  • Receive a $300 annual travel credit.
  • Earn 5 points per dollar spent on flights booked through Chase Travel℠.
  • Redeem Ultimate Rewards points on the Chase Travel portal for 1.5 cents per point.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card ($95 annual fee) :

  • Earn 5 points per dollar spent on flights booked through Chase Travel.
  • Redeem Ultimate Rewards points on the Chase Travel portal for 1.25 cents per point.

The Platinum Card® from American Express : ($695 annual fee; see rates and fees )

  • Current offer: Earn 80,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $8,000 in purchases in the first six months of card membership.
  • Earn 5 points per dollar spent on flights booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel (on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar).
  • Redeem Membership Rewards points on the Amex Travel portal for 1 cent per point.

Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card : ($0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $150; see rates and fees )

  • Current offer: Earn 40,000 SkyMiles after you spend $2,000 in purchases in the first six months of card membership.
  • Receive a $200 Delta flight credit after spending $10,000 in eligible purchases in a calendar year (terms apply).
  • Redeem Delta SkyMiles for WestJet flights.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card : ( $395 annual fee; see rates and fees )

  • Current offer: Earn 75,000 Capital One miles after you spend $4,000 on purchases within the first three months from account opening.
  • Receive a $300 annual travel credit for bookings made through Capital One Travel.
  • Receive 10,000 bonus miles each year on your account anniversary.
  • Redeem miles as a statement credit at a rate of 1 cent per mile; therefore, you can pay for your WestJet flight using your miles.

Bottom line

WestJet may be a Canadian airline, but this carrier has routes across the U.S., Europe and even South America. Like most airlines, WestJet's prices can fluctuate and are sometimes borderline abysmal. Luckily, you can use your points and miles to help cut the cost of the flight and even find deals that can get you to an international location for a fraction of the cost.

Whether you're looking to head to a Canadian destination, such as Toronto or Calgary, or even fly to popular European cities like Dublin and Rome, WestJet is a carrier that should be on your radar. Plus, since you can redeem your Delta SkyMiles, reserve flights through a travel portal or redeem miles as a statement credit to cover your airfare, you can easily book your next travel adventure using your points and miles.

CALGARY – A potential strike between WestJet and its mechanics union appears to have been avoided.

A statement from the Calgary-based airline Sunday night says a tentative deal between it and the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association has been agreed to.

If the contract is ratified by both sides, it would mark the first approved collective bargaining agreement between WestJet and AMFA.

WestJet had issued a 72-hour lockout notice on Saturday to the union, saying it was response to AMFA announcing a strike vote.

The union, which represents around 670 aircraft maintenance engineers and skilled trade groups with the carrier, had cited wages, outsourcing, scheduling and layoff protection as standout issues during negotiations.

WestJet issues 72-hour lockout notification to its Tech Ops union, AMFA

westjet manage my trips

WestJet today has issued a 72-hour lockout notice to the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), the union that represents WestJet Aircraft Maintenance Engineers. As a result of today’s lockout notice, a work stoppage could occur as early as Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at 12 p.m. MT, unless a deal is reached.

“The decision to issue a lockout notice was not one that was made lightly, and we sincerely regret and apologize for the uncertainty this causes for our guests and the communities and regions that rely on us. Despite our unwavering commitment to reach a collective agreement, AMFA continues to show up to the bargaining table with unreasonable demands and expectations,” said Diederik Pen, President of WestJet Airline and Group Chief Operating Officer. “With AMFA publicly issuing a strike vote alert last week and publicly directing guests to fly with other carriers, we can’t allow the unpredictable nature and lack of progress to continue. We are left with no alternative but to issue a lockout notice in an attempt to bring this to a final resolution.”

The WestJet Group has been in active labour negotiations with AMFA since September 2023. The WestJet Group has presented an offer to AMFA that would make WestJet Aircraft Maintenance Engineers the highest paid in Canada, with a cumulative wage increase of over 20 per cent across the span of the collective agreement. The offer would also deliver industry leading work-life balance standards and strong commitments to job security.

"We sincerely value the work and contributions of our Aircraft Maintenance Engineers, and our proposed agreement reflects this. We are unwaveringly committed to reaching an agreement to prevent travel disruption, however, we are equally prepared to protect the travel plans of our guests and to provide long-term stability and security for all employees at the WestJet Group,” concluded Pen.

Issuing a 72-hour lockout notice does not mean travel disruption will occur. However, in the coming days, the WestJet Group will take all necessary actions to manage the impacts as much as possible, including:

  • Beginning preparations to operate a reduced schedule.
  • Proactively managing changes and cancellations, to ensure the ability to communicate with guests in advance of their flight.
  • Providing flexible change and cancel options for those who wish to make alternative arrangements.

Please visit WestJet’s Guest Updates page for more information regarding flight status, travel changes and applicable dates for flexible change and cancel options.
