When is the 2024 Tour de France?

The 2024 Tour de France spans from Saturday, June 29 through Sunday, July 21. The event begins one week earlier than usual due to the start of the Paris Olympics on July 26.

How to watch the 2024 Tour de France in the USA

Each stage of the 2024 Tour de France will be streamed on Peacock , and a few select stages will be broadcast on NBC.

Coverage of each day’s stage will begin on Peacock . Stage 8 (July 6) and Stage 14 (July 13) will move over to NBC at 8 a.m. EST. Finally, coverage of the penultimate Stage 20 will be replayed on NBC starting at 4 p.m. EST.

Who won the 2023 Tour de France?

Danish rider Jonas Vingegaard won the 2023 Tour de France, his second straight victory in the event. If Vingegaard wins again this year, he would be the first cyclist to win the event three straight years since Chris Froome from 2015-2017.

The 2024 Tour de France nears its end with just five more stages to go before the finish in Nice. Friday's stage 19 brings the race nearly back to where the action started in the Alps.

The next two stages are short but packed with climbing as the Tour de France overall contenders fight to move up in the GC standings .

Race leader Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) goes into the last two stages of the race with an advantage of 5:03 on defending champion Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) with Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quickstep) in third place at 7:01 in arrears.

Pogačar's final challenges include stage 20, only 132.8 kilometres long and with and four climbs ending on the Col de la Couillole before the final individual time trial in Nice.

How to stream the Tour de France

USA Network is not scheduled to carry any stages this season, marking the first time that there will be no Tour de France coverage on basic cable.

I am a Senior Adult 84 YO. Stage IV Cancer, My husband died of a heart attack, I hv to live on just my SS. And cannot afford to pay to watch the Tour de France, I can only stretch my money so far.. shame on you for taking away my one joy..

You can watch it on the USA network. I refuse to pay to watch it on Peacock.

I think it is sad that we can’t watch the tour . Money is all people think of today.

You should broadcast on a regular cable TV station. Who wants to pay to stream!!! Certainly not seniors on a fixed income. That is terrible policy!

2024 Tour de France: How to watch, schedule and odds

The 111th Tour de France continues on its path through Italy on Monday for Stage 3 of the race.

Stage 3 is the first flat stage of the race after cyclists rode back-to-back days of hilly terrain in the race's first two stages . Monday will also be the last stage that is entirely in Italy, as the competitors will enter France by the end of Stage 4 on Tuesday.

Competition for the 2024 Tour de France is scheduled from June 29, 2024 - July 21, 2024. Every stage of the Tour de France will broadcast on Peacock, with Stage 8 (July 6) and Stage 14 (July 13) also airing live on NBC.

What is the Tour de France?

How does scoring work for the Tour de France?

Riders starts each stage of the race together, but earn points for their placement in various stages and for winning intermediate sprints. The leader wears a green jersey, which has become a symbol of the points classification competition, which is a secondary competition that awards points to riders for their stage finishes and intermediate sprint victories.

The winner of the Tour de France is the rider with the shortest overall combined time of every stage of the race.  The 2024 Tour de France will feature an individual time trial from Monaco to Nice as the final stage.

Cycling’s premier event is about to get underway.

And it will look a little different than in year’s past.

The 2024 Tour de France, the 111th in history, begins on Saturday June 29. However, the starting point for this year’s Tour de France, as well as the finish line, will mark a series of firsts for the event.

To mark 100 years since Ottavio Bottecchia became the first Italian rider to win the Tour de France, this year’s race will begin in Italy, with riders setting off in Florence. The first three stages of this year’s Tour de France will keep riders in Italy, before the Tour’s fourth stage sees riders make the journey from Pinerolo in Italy, to Valloire in France.

In addition, this year’s Tour de France schedule coincides with the 2024 Paris Summer Games, which begin in Paris at the end of July. As such the Tour de France will conclude in Nice, with the final stage of the 2024 Tour de France bringing riders from Monaco to Nice.

This year’s Tour de France also concludes with an individual time trial, the first time the event has concluded with an ITT since 1989. That year saw the legendary duel on the final day between Greg LeMond and Laurent Fignon.

This year’s event has no shortage of storylines, starting with the battle between Dane Jonas Vingegaard, riding for Visma—Lease a Bike, and Slovenian Tadej Pogačar of UAE Team Emirates.

Vingegaard is the reigning Tour de France champion, winning in both 2022 and 2023 ahead of his rival Pogačar. But his status for this year’s Tour de France is a huge question mark, as Vingegaard endured a horrific crash at the Tour of Basque Country in April. The Danish cyclist suffered a broken collarbone, several broken ribs, a pulmonary contusion and a pneumothorax as a result of the crash, and spent 12 days in the hospital.

Vingegaard’s questionable form has opened the door for Pogačar to perhaps claim another title. The Slovenian took home the prestigious yellow jersey, the maillot jaune, in both 2020 and 2021; his victory in 2020 at the age of 21 made him the second-youngest winner in race history.

The two are the odds-on favorites to compete for the top spot on the podium again in 2024, but Vingegaard’s recent crash has made his rival the favorite.

Beyond the two favorites, there are some other riders in the field who could challenge for the yellow jersey. Primož Roglič from Slovenia, riding for Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe, is one of the older riders in the field but might have some unfinished business after losing out to fellow Slovenian Pogačar in 2020. Roglič failed to finish in both 2021 and 2022, but won the Critérium du Dauphiné at the start of the month, fending off a late challenge from Matteo Jorgenson from Visma—Lease a Bike.

Remco Evenepoel from Soudal Quick-Step is another rider to watch. The Belgian cyclist suffered a crash of his own at Basque Country, but seemed back in form during the Critérium du Dauphiné when he was part of the chasing pack that put Roglič under pressure in the final stage. Considered one of the sport’s premier time trialists, the schedule sets up well for him with the 2024 Tour de France containing a pair of time trials, including the one on the final day previously mentioned.

For American fans Jorgenson represents your best hope for Tour de France glory. However, his role this year might best be described as “undetermined,” given Vingegaard’s questionable form. Should Vingegaard be healthy Jorgenson may serve as an auxiliary leader for Visma, and one of the sport’s premier domestiques. But if Vingegaard struggles with his health as a result of his recent crash, the 24-year-old could be thrust into a major role. And given his recent performance — including finishing just eight seconds behind Roglič at Dauphiné — he is certainly worth keeping an eye on.

Stages, dates, and distances for the 2024 Tour de France

Here are the stages for the 2024 Tour de France. According to the official website there are eight stages classified as flat, four stages classified as hilly, seven mountain stages (including four summit finishes: Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d’Adet in Stage 14, Plateau de Beille in Stage 15, Isola 2000 in Stage 19, and Col de la Couillole in Stage 20). There are also two individual time trials, along with a pair of rest days.

2024 Tour de France Stages

Overall, the 2024 Tour e France route covers 3,498 kilometers (2,174 miles) and contains 52,230 meters (171,358 feet) of total vertical climb.

If riders were hoping to ease into the 2024 Tour de France, they have another thing coming. The opening stage of this year’s Tour not only marks the first time the race has started in Italy, but it might be the toughest opening stage in history, featuring 3,600 meters (11,811 feet) of climbing. The final climb into San Marino, featuring over seven kilometers (4.35 miles) of climb at nearly five degrees.

The two toughest stretches are likely Stages 14 and 15, as well as Stages 19 and 20. Not only are all four stages mountain stages — meaning riders will have to conquer the mountains on back-to-back days — but all four stages contain a summit finish: Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d’Adet in Stage 14, Plateau de Beille in Stage 15, Isola 2000 in Stage 19, and Col de la Couillole in Stage 20.

Stage 9 is a very intriguing stage. While it is classified as “hilly” Stage 9, which sees riders start and finish in Troyes, it also contains 14 “white road” sectors. White roads on the Tour de France are dusty, gravel roads that have been a feature of this event.

In addition, the 2024 Tour de France concludes with an Individual Time Trial, the second ITT of this year’s race and the first time the Tour de France will finish in such fashion since the legendary LeMond-Fignon duel in 1989.

Romain Bardet, aided in large part by his Team dsm-firmenich PostNL teammate Frank Van den Broek, captured the difficult first stage of the 2024 Tour de France on Saturday. For Bardet, who is competing in his final Tour de France after announcing his upcoming retirement following next year’s Critérium du Dauphiné before a switch to gravel. This stage win was his first in seven years, and he’s the first Frenchman to don the famous yellow jersey since Julian Alaphilippe in the 2021 race.

How to Watch the Tour de France

It’s July, which means the Tour de France (or TDF) is kicking into gear. Watching the event live or on-demand is about as easy as coasting downhill on a Cannondale.

The Tour will be broadcast by NBC Sports, which means you can catch it on your local NBC affiliate, the USA Network, or the Peacock streaming service.

We think that Peacock offers the best viewing experience because you can watch live or on-demand on many different devices. The service costs $7.99 a month (or $13.99 ad-free), and you can sign up and watch right now.

What channel has the Tour de France?

Because NBC is the official broadcaster of the Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes in the United States, the events will be available on NBCUniversal Media channels.

• NBC: Local NBC affiliates will be streaming select stages of the race. Right now, it seems like the network will only be airing the first and the last stages of the race.
• USA Network: The USA Network will be airing many stages of the race live, and others it will air late-night reruns.
• Peacock: You can watch every stage of the race live on Peacock (with a Premium Monthly or Premium Plus plan). You can also stream reruns of stages that you don’t watch live. Peacock will also stream all of the Tour de France Femmes stages live.

Watch the Tour de France for free

There is one way to watch certain parts of the Tour de France for free. All you need is an indoor HD antenna and a TV.

With an antenna you should be able to pick up your local NBC affiliate. The channel will air at least the first and last stage of the Tour de France live. You won’t have to pay for a subscription or even sign up for anything (a rare thing in our modern world).

How to install an antenna

TV antennas are cheap and relatively easy to install. You can find a good one for under $30 online . Then just follow the instructions to attach the antenna to your TV and mount it near a window.

With a TV antenna you’ll get more than just NBC. You can watch local nightly news, sit-coms like The Simpsons (on Fox) and Abbot Elementary (ABC), and other sporting events, like the Super Bowl.

The thrill of the ride is upon us once more. Cycling’s greatest event is back – the 2024 Tour de France begins Saturday, June 29. With a start in Italy and a finish in Nice, this year is unlike any other. Follow your favorite cyclists as they undertake grueling hills, long days, and tests of endurance as they move through the European countryside on their way to the finish line. What Is the Tour de France? 

The Tour de France is a massive bike race that takes cyclists on a three-week journey through France. With the exact route changing every year, this is a unique challenge unlike anything else on the cycling calendar. The race is broken up into stages, with each day covering a certain portion of the route. Each stage has its own winner, and the winner of the entire event is the person who has the fastest time of all 21 stages. Every stage matters. Even winning one, even if the rider doesn’t win the tournament, will boost that rider’s standing significantly. Only the absolute best, most competitive riders make it into the Tour de France, so tensions are high for the right to win the coveted yellow jersey.  

This year’s event challenges 176 riders. 22 teams of 8 riders will travel across 3,498 km of road, hill, and mountain terrain.  Riding for hours each day, the cyclists are put to the ultimate test as they try to have the lowest time and pass their fellow competitors, scaling mountains and gliding on roads in the process. While the course is always different and a new challenge for the riders, this year’s course is unprecedented. The Tour completely skips Paris – typically the finish line is located on the Champs-Elysées – and kicks off in Florence, Italy. With twelve new locations along the route and four countries total, this may be the best Tour de France yet.  

What’s Different About This Year? 

With the 2024 Summer Olympics beginning July 26 in Paris, the tour is having a few changes. The race avoids Paris entirely and will have its grand finale in the beautiful French Riveria. The race will travel through four countries – France, Italy, San Marino, and Monaco – and feature ten new locations along the way. Four mountain ranges will be visited – the Apennines, the Italian and French Alps, the Massif Central, and the Pyrenees – and 52,230m of total vertical gain. Rather than a sprint for the final stage, this year’s Tour de France Stage 21 will be a time trial for the first time since 1989.  

Some athletes will finish the race and only have a few days rest before gearing up to represent their country in cycling at the Paris Olympics beginning July 27. France is in the world’s eye this summer and the Tour de France is sure to bring the action.

Which Cyclists Should I Look Out For? 

Two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard (Denmark) is a must- watch. Will he be able to go for three? He’s a likely favorite but not the only one. Tadej Pogačar (Slovenia) won in 2020 and 2021 and placed second in 2022 and 2023. The two will likely battle it out for the entirety of the 2024 edition, making a thrilling spectacle all fans will enjoy.  

But don’t count others out! Remco Evenepoel (Belgium) is debuting at the 2024 Tour de France and a young up-and-comer to watch at 23 -years old. Another possible rising star is Canada’s Derek Gee. A few American riders will be in the mix, including Neilson Powless, Sean Quinn, and Matteo Jorgenson. Brothers Simon and Adam Yates (United Kingdom) will compete for different teams. France’s David Gaudu and Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz may also create a stir. Anything could happen, and all of these cyclists will give it their all the entire Tour.  

Who will cycle to victory at the 2024 Tour de France? With so many changes and new additions, along with the backdrop of the Olympics as another opportunity to impress on the world stage, this is the race to watch.

The 2024 Tour de France is well under way, with the action picking back up after the first rest day.

If you’ve got five-plus hours to spend each day, you can watch the entire men's race end-to-end in many territories. For the more time-pressed, plenty of highlight options compress the day’s action into an hour or so.

If you’re really stuck for time, daily five-minute highlights on the Le Tour website – which are also posted to YouTube – will keep you abreast of all the action.

Unlike many other big cycling races, terrestrial broadcasters pay attention to the Tour de France, so you can watch at least some of it subscription-free in most territories. There's a full list of broadcasters by country on the official Le Tour site.

There’s also the option to use a VPN to stream from a country with free terrestrial coverage, although most VPNs with decent geographic reach and streaming speeds will require a subscription – and you may have to listen to commentary in French.

And when the Tour de France is over, you can get your pro cycling fix with the Tour de France Femmes in August.

How can I watch the Tour de France live in the US?

Viewers in the US can enjoy daily coverage on NBC Sports and Peacock. You can watch on NBC on demand, too – there's no additional charge above your cable, satellite or telco TV provider's subscription cost.

Peacock access requires a subscription to its premium tier, priced at $5.99 plus tax per month. There's currently a deal at $19.99 for a year's access for new subscribers.

How can I watch the Tour de France live in Australia?

Cycling fans in Australia can enjoy every stage live on SBS .

Handily, there’s a free on-demand service if you’re not an insomniac, while there are daily highlights on the SBS Sport website. There's coverage and more on the SBS Tour Tracker app too.

Stages and start times

Like the race itself, stage start times are a moveable feast, with starts as early as 11.15am CET and as late as 2.40pm CET.

End times will vary significantly too, depending on stage length, how hard the terrain is and how fast it’s ridden.

Fortunately, the Tour de France has organised a few of these races before, so it has a pretty good idea of when the first riders are likely to reach the finish.

Again, that’s highly variable – anything from 4.28pm CET to 7.30pm CET – so you need to be on your toes to make sure you're watching early enough not to miss the end-stage action.

Here’s a table, taken from the official Le Tour website, of expected start and end times for each stage. If you want to see particular action, the time the race is expected to reach intermediate points is set out on the site too, right down to railway level crossings and tiny villages in la France profonde .

How to Watch the Tour de France

From cable TV to live streaming, here are your options for watching the 2022 Tour.

• NBC Sports will broadcast the Tour daily through Peacock Premium and offer full livestream coverage for $4.99 a month, with ad-free coverage for an additional $5 a month.
• FuboTV also provides access to NBC’s coverage for $70 a month.

The 2022 Tour de France begins on Friday, July 1st with a 13.3km individual time trial through Copenhagen, Denmark. (Yes, Denmark!) So it’s time to start planning how you’re going to watch it.

Whether that means streaming from your phone, starting your morning with the previous day’s highlights, or inviting your friends over for a viewing party, the options for watching the Tour de France are plentiful.

For the Fanatics

In general, NBC offers the most accessible and affordable (and legal) options for American viewers to watch the Tour de France through its Peacock Premium streaming service for $4.99 a month. For ad-free coverage you’ll need a subscription to Peacock Premium Plus, which runs $9.99 a month. Eligible Comcast Xfinity X1 and Flex customers and Cox Contour customers may already access Peacock Premium for free.

You could cancel your subscription at the end of the Tour, but consider this: by subscribing to Peacock Premium or Peacock Premium Plus you’ll also have access to the full men’s and women’s Tours as well as other races covered by NBC and its partners, including the 2022 Vuelta a España and next year’s editions of Paris-Nice and Paris-Roubaix.

The Peacock app is available on Roku, Apple devices, Android and AndroidTV devices, Google platforms, Chromecast, Xbox devices, Playstation 4 and 4 Pro, VIZIO SmartCast TVs, and LG Smart TVs. You can also watch online via the Peacock website.

If you have a good cable package and prefer conventional viewing on your television, you’re in luck: NBC will offer the race to cable subscribers via the USA Network and CNBC . Live coverage often starts around 7 a.m. ET, so 9-to-5ers will likely need to record each stage and watch later. (Check the full schedule for details.)

No Cable? No Problem.

If you don’t have cable and want more than what’s offered on the NBC app, a subscription to FuboTV costs $70 per month. Add the $12 per month cycling package you’ll have full access to NBC’s coverage of the race. Fubo’s also great for those who love cycling year round, as FuboTV has a full-time cycling channel covering the major Tours, the Classics, some World Championships, and even BMX racing. (It’s also available in Canada.) If you’ve been looking for a streaming service that offers most if not all of the channels you enjoy watching, it’s a solid option.

Riders to Watch

Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) has won the last two Tours and starts this year’s race as the overwhelming favorite. He can do it all: climb, descend, time trial–even the cobblestones of Belgium and Northern France have proven to be no match for the 23-year-old. Assuming he avoids crashes and bad luck during the Tour’s dangerous first week , he should have little trouble taking his third win.

Pogačar’s biggest challenge should come from Jumbo-Visma’s co-captains, Slovenia’s Primož Roglič and Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard, who finished second to Pogačar in 2020 and 2021, respectively. If they can play to one another’s strengths and avoid worrying about which one is their team’s “true” leader, then they might have a chance to dethrone the two-time defending champ.

The INEOS Grenadiers have won seven of the last ten Tours de France with four different riders–so clearly they know what it takes to win the world’s biggest bike race. But Pogačar’s proven to be a tough nut for the British super team to crack. This year we expect them to count on a mix of both old and new in their bid to reclaim the yellow jersey, with co-captains Geraint Thomas, who won the Tour in 2018, and Daniel Martinez, who’s riding only his third Tour and his first as his team’s protected rider, expected to lead the way.

Other riders to keep an eye on include Australia’s Ben O’Connor, Russia’s Aleksandr Vlasov (BORA-hansgrohe), and Colombia’s Rigoberto Uran (EF Education-EasyPost).

The world’s most prestigious cycling race, the Tour de France , this year starts in in Bilbao, Spain, where the peloton begins a grueling three-week odyssey over 2,115 miles.

NBC and USA Network combine for live and tape-delayed race coverage on TV July 1-23, but Peacock has live start-to-finish streaming coverage of all stages, and Peacock is the exclusive live presenter of the final stage on Sunday, July 23, as the race concludes at the Champs-Élysées in Paris.

NBC Sports’ cycling play-by-play caller Phil Liggett broadcasts his 51st Tour de France, joined by analyst Bob Roll. Liggett and Roll are on-site at each stage, along with reporters Steve Porino and Christian Vande Velde.
