Karen Walker Sings the Blues: Megan Mullally on Her Most Dramatic ‘Will & Grace’ Episode Yet

The ‘Will & Grace’ star opens up about singing ‘The Man That Got Away’ in Thursday night’s episode, the most emotional performance she’s given in her two decades as Karen Walker.

Sean Hayes and I are sitting in a green room on the soundstage in Los Angeles where the Will & Grace revival is being filmed. We’re talking about... I don’t know what. Everything: Liam Payne’s new song, Ben Platt’s career, my dating life, his producing career, getting back into Jack McFarland’s shoes, and the episode he’s shooting at the moment, in which he and Eric McCormack as Will accidentally drug themselves and hash out their feelings about Jack’s impending marriage while hallucinating butterflies.

But somewhere in the middle of our conversation while I was on set this August, I start hearing the tinkle of piano keys. Very loudly, someone is singing the torch song, “The Man Got That Away.” It’s fabulous, but obtrusive. Do they always play the radio that loud, I ask him? “Kevin, that’s Megan,” Hayes says.

Unbeknownst to me, my reporting day on the Will & Grace set coincided with one of the most emotional episodes Megan Mullally has filmed as Karen Walker. In the episode that aired Thursday night, “Family Trip,” Mullally’s Karen comes to terms with the fact that she is about to be divorced from her husband and delivers what’s ruled her “last performance” as Mrs. Stanley Walker.

In a riff on Will and Jack’s parallel hallucinatory storyline, Karen daydreams herself at a cabaret bar, saying goodbye to Stanley and her past identity attached to him by crooning the ballad at the piano. NBC is keenly aware of what a big moment having Mullally as Karen sing “The Man That Got Away,” a song made famous by Judy Garland in her version of A Star Is Born , will be for Will & Grace fans. It teased the episode this week on Twitter touting , “Megan Mullally will have your jaw on the floor.”

I was there during rehearsals. They’re not wrong.

Mullally has a Broadway background, having starred in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying , Grease , and Young Frankenstein , and she is a member of the band Nancy and Beth. She sang on Will & Grace once before, a duet of Nat King Cole’s “Unforgettable” with Sean Hayes that makes me cry every time I pull it up on YouTube. But this was different. Because it was a fantasy sequence, Mullally didn’t have to sing in character as Karen. She could belt, perform, and feel the song the way she would if she were performing it at a cabaret herself.

The rafters were shaking on the soundstage as she rehearsed. Every crew member on set gathered around to listen to her sing, including the entire cast and guest stars Chelsea Handler and Mary McCormack. At the end of each belt, everyone would look at each other and mime chills.

“I taught her how to sing,” Jim Burrows, the TV legend who has directed every episode of Will & Grace , quips when I ask him about it. He loves it when the show dabbles in gravitas, shading the neuroses of these characters.  “You have to bend a lot of stuff to get Megan to sing that way,” he says. “Karen would never sing the way she sings there. By making it a fantasy Meg-y can sing her chops off.”

About an hour later, Mullally is satisfied with her rehearsals and we meet to talk about the episode. She shares Burrows’ excitement about delving into more emotional parts of Karen’s otherwise boozy-kooky psyche.

“There wasn’t a ton of it in the first eight seasons,” she says. “I remember specifically an episode where Karen wanted to have a child but then realized it wasn't going to happen. Then I remember another episode where Stan was in the hospital and she was acting really tough but underneath she was scared and vulnerable. But I don’t remember a lot of other times.”

It’s a reminder that Karen, as fun as she is to laugh with, is a real person—and because the revival has taken such care to chronicle the ways in which these characters have matured, Mullally gets to play that. “It’s good to have that storyline where there’s a divorce,” she says. “In as much as there’s been so many jokes made about Stan over the years, she really does love him.”

Speaking with everyone involved in Will & Grace , there’s a sense of enjoyment in the fact that the show has earned the right, after creating so much history with these characters and their relationship with the audience, to delve deeper in the revival . An earlier episode this season showcased Debra Messing’s dramatic talents in an episode that had Grace sharing her own #MeToo story, earning her Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award nominations. The nuance with which the series has portrayed Jack and Will’s evolving friendship as gay men and best friends getting older has also earned praise.

“I sometimes think that if this was a show that was starting out and Karen was doing these things you wouldn’t accept it,” series co-creator David Kohan says. “It had to be built over time. There are so many things, punchlines that are just a look that require a real familiarity with who the character is and where the character is coming from in order to appreciate the joke. It makes me glad that this is a returning show, that you don’t have to build up all that equity with the audience to deliver something.”

Including delivering something as gorgeous as Mullally’s performance, which I still can’t believe I got to see her rehearse several times. Co-creator Max Mutchnick winks at me as I leave. “You lucked out.”

Voice Of The Crew - Since 2002

Los angeles, california, cinematography excellence in will & grace : “family, trip”.

Mun Kang

The esteemed NBC series Will & Grace continues to elevate the bar through multiple camera cinematography within a sitcom. Two-time award-winning Emmy cinematographer Gary Baum , ASC remains to set a precedence for his craft in the series. Baum took home the 2018 Emmy award in the category of ‘Outstanding Cinematography for a Multi-Camera Series’ for the episode entitled “A Gay Olde Christmas.” This year, once again the cinematographer is nominated for his excellence in the episode “Family, Trip.”

The story of the “Family, Trip” episode is that Will ( Eric McCormack ), Jack ( Sean Hayes ), and Karen ( Megan Mullally ) drank some hallucinogenic chocolate milk, while Grace ( Debra Messing ) is dealing with her sister. “That was a very interesting episode for Will & Grace . We had an exterior location at night which are always fun to do. For that exterior location, there was no dialogue, just a lot of different shots setting up the interior of the cabaret.”

WILL & GRACE -- "Family Trip" Episode 207 -- Pictured: (l-r) Mary McCormack as Janet Adler, Debra Messing as Grace Adler -- (Photo by: Chris Haston/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank)

“We used mostly practical lights from the store fronts and just a very little fill from the exterior. It was more of a naturalistic feel. The cabaret set is where Megan’s character Karen sings “The Man That Got Away,” the Judy Garland signature piece. The interior of the cabaret with her singing was very different for us. It was very moody, a style in a noir sense,” said Baum.

Shooting Karen’s music video did present a few obstacles. The cinematographer clarified, “The most challenging was Karen’s music video because we had to use a 360-degree circular track around her. We shot that in a 360 mode and used one of our own cameras on a dolly. We did the dolly shot about 2-3 times. We did one full take which was almost four minutes and NBC uploaded that entire music video on the internet.”

One of the hallucinations Will and Jack experienced from the chocolate milk were butterflies floating around. Obviously, these butterflies were visual effects, but the cameras needed to project where they might appear. Baum illuminated, “There were some visual effects with butterflies. We had to anticipate where the butterflies were going to be. We had to set our lens sizes and our marks on the stage so we can relay that information to visual effects. It’s more about measurement capability for them to work, so we had to work within that parameter.”

Cinematographer Gary Baum

The editing and the cinematography relayed synergy and chemistry uniformly due to the amount of footage shot and the music performance. “There’s always more footage than could possibly use in a 22-minute program. We edited in a piece of her singing a performance style, it was very interesting for us to do that. Because of the music, it’ll have to work blended together in a different harmony. It was such well-done marriage of both. We all look forward to the special episodes,” proclaimed the previous Emmy winner.

Cinematographer Gary Baum has been with the Will & Grace family from the very beginning since 1998. The “Family, Trip” episode marks the 2 nd Emmy nomination for his role on Will & Grace . Other Emmy nominations include such series as Superior Donuts , Mike & Molly , The Millers , 2 Broke Girls , and Gary Unmarried . Baum is a winner of 2 Primetime Emmy awards and holds a total of 8 nominations.

McKenna Grace and Will Buie Jr. had a night to remember!

The Ghostbusters: Afterlife star, 17, revealed that she went to prom with the Bunk’d actor and shared several photos to her TikTok of them preparing for the event and having fun.

She kicked off her TikTok slide showing a photo of the pair as kids smiling at the camera with their arms around each other in 2015 before cutting to a photo of them nearly a decade later posing in their prom outfits.

Grace could be seen donning a black spaghetti strap a-line dress with her hair tied half up, half down with a white ribbon. She completed the look with black heels and carried a white flower bouquet. For her glam, she opted for a bright red lip, some light blush and dark eyeliner to emphasize her eyes.

As for Buie Jr., he opted for a classic black suit with white undershirt and a black bowtie. He wore a matching white boutonniere clipped to his jacket. In one of the photos Grace shared, she could be seen pinning the object to his jacket as he held her bouquet.

In another photo, the actress could be seen jokingly squeezing his face with her hand as they both smiled brightly at the camera while posing outdoors. She also shared a fun shot of the two at the prom photo booth, in which she could be seen making a funny face as she held up bunny ears behind his head.

The TikTok slide ended with a sweet photo of the pair, once again as kids, hugging each other tightly.

Never miss a story — sign up for  PEOPLE's free daily newsletter  to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Grace titled the slides “:)) Prom!!” and wrote, “Thank you for letting me come @WillBuieJr. :)) Sorry I wasn’t allowed to go to the after party, and we had to watch Five Nights at Freddy’s instead (I’m not actually sorry, best movie ever).”

Buie Jr. also shared the photos to his Instagram along with a funny shot of the pair wearing black sunglasses as they posed ahead of the event. He wrote, “Jr. prom was a success 🙌.” He even shared a sweet video of the two of them “stepping” into their prom looks and captioned it, “Prom fit check 🤙”

The event is another milestone for the I, Tonya actress, who grew up on screen playing several young characters in shows and films. Though, Grace recently also logged another important event — her music debut .

"I play so many characters, but I feel like music is just more of a personal thing for me," the Emmy-nominated teen actress previously told PEOPLE of her EP Bittersweet 16 .

She added, of her EP, which includes songs documenting young love and occurrences in her life, "All my songs have elements of my life because I don't want to write a song and sing it if it didn't happen... all of my songs are very specific and true to me.”
