Yarra Valley Wine Tours from Melbourne Reviews

1. yarra valley gourmet small-group ecotour from melbourne.

  • Duration:  8 hours
  • Departure:  Hotel pickup and drop-off included
  • Departure Time: 8:00 AM
  • Includes:  All tastings, Lunch, Friendly & Informative Tour Guide, WiFi on board, Air-conditioned vehicle

While Melbourne is certainly a city you need to visit, I understand that sometimes it’s nice to escape the hustle and bustle and into the fresh air of nature.

With the Yarra Valley Gourmet Small-Group Ecotour from Melbourne , you’ll not only have time to free your mind but to learn about some of the best wines the country has to offer.

With fun and experienced guides alongside experts right from the vineyards themselves, you’re going to be the new wine expert in your friend group!

Our tour started off with a convenient hotel pickup around 8:00 am, which made things much smoother for our day without having to worry about taxis and extra costs. With our small group size, we didn’t feel like we were just part of a crowd – it felt more like we were all friends going on an adventure together.

The air-conditioned coach we cruised along in was perfect for the number of people we had, complete with wi-fi on board to stay connected throughout the tour!

The road trip itself was very pleasant, with beautiful natural scenery to enjoy as our guide offered an educational, entertaining commentary along the way!

Expand To See More See Less

Our first stop was at the renowned Balgownie Estate Yarra Valley, set in beautiful rolling wills, as well as chardonnay and pinot noir (hot tip: come back for a romantic evening in their hotel and try their 1309 restaurant!

We then visited the Coldstream Dairy to try a wide selection of cheeses before learning all about how to make (and sample) gin at Four Pillars Gin Distillery!

After all that work, we took a well-deserved break at the Rochford Wines Yarra Valley to try some wine, as well as enjoy a delicious 4-course lunch with plenty of tea and coffee!

Last but not least was admittedly one of my favorite stops: the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery, where we tried 8 different chocolate varieties. Overall, it was the perfect way to gain insight into the amazing food and drink offered in this beautiful Australian region!

  • Duration:  7 to 8 hours
  • Departure Time: 10:30 AM
  • Includes:  Lunch, Private transportation, Alcoholic Beverages, GST (Goods and Services Tax)

What I love about this tour, is that it takes you to some of the best places in this Australian wine country, while still offering an exclusive, flexible way to experience it. There’s no cookie-cutter, boring tour that seems to be as if it was copied and pasted right from something from a generic Google search.

The Yarra Valley Full Day Private Wine Tour is an excursion that will take you and your party out to some of the best wineries in the world, with a guide there to lead the way.

This tour starts out a bit later, which was nice as we’d stayed out pretty late the night before and appreciated the chance to get to sleep in!

As our guide came right to our hotel to pick us and the rest of our private party up, we just had to head down to the lobby to meet them. I found this tour to be one of the most well-organized, seamless experiences I’ve ever been on, making it that much more enjoyable!

Our transportation for the day was a bus that fit all of us nicely, with plenty of legroom, big windows for viewing the rolling hills and pretty townships, as well as comfy seats.

As we rolled along, our guide told us all about the history of the region, with more specific info about the area’s wine. As this is a customized tour, I can’t say that you’re going to make the exact same stops as we did, but I’m sure it’ll be just as amazing for you.

All of the wine tastings and food are included, and we went to wineries based on our specific interests and the recommendations of our expert guide!

I loved the fact that we got to choose how long we spent at each stop, so there was never any boredom or feeling like we were missing out. This is a wonderful tour that I’d recommend to anyone!

3. Yarra Valley Wine and Winery Tour from Melbourne

  • Departure Time: 9:15 AM
  • Includes:  Pickup and drop-off from designated meeting points, Transport by air-conditioned minibus, Wine tastings at four Yarra Valley wineries, Lunch at Balgownie Estate or equivalent, Glass of wine and tea or coffee with lunch

This next tour does a fantastic job of encapsulating the spirit of this beautiful, renowned region filled with lush vineyards, top-notch wines, and gourmet delights.

The Yarra Valley Wine and Winery Tour from Melbourne  is perfect if you’re new to wine or want to learn about the different types and how to properly taste the tasty drinks. Even if you’re well-versed in the world of wine, I guarantee you’ll learn some valuable tips and tricks here, like I did!

Just like most others in this guide, this excursion also includes a convenient hotel pickup and drop-off service so you don’t have to deal with figuring it out yourself.

Our guide/bus driver for the day was simply amazing, with a deep knowledge of wine and great driving skills. The minibus was also very comfortable and well-maintained, with air-conditioning that is absolutely essential during the hotter months!

Now, this isn’t a private tour, but the groups on this one are very small, so it’s a great way to meet other travelers from around the world while still feeling the exclusivity you’d get from a private one.

Even before arriving at our first stop (Greenstone Vineyards), our guide had already taught us all about the different varietals produced in the Yarra Valley.

At the vineyard, we did a delicious tasting while overlooking the breathtaking estate before heading to Balgownie Estate.

At Balgownie, we did another great tasting table, sampling shiraz and cabernet sauvignon before enjoying a savory lunch at their winery restaurant paired with a glass of wine.

We couldn’t forget Yering Farm, where we did a cellar door tasting while seeing the copper winemaking tools that were used over a whopping hundred years ago before making our way to the lovely Soumah Wines!

There’s a ton to see and learn on this excursion, and the 8 or so hours just flew by!

4. Melbourne: Yarra Valley Wine, Gin and Chocolate Tour

  • Duration: 8.25 hours
  • Departure: St Paul’s Cathedral, Melbourne, Flinders St, Melbourne VIC 3000
  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM
  • Includes:  Air-conditioned vehicle, bottled water, alcoholic beverages, driver, wine and gin tastings

Are you looking for one of the best Yarra Valley winery tour but want to stick to something more budget-friendly?

If so, there’s no better option than the Melbourne: Yarra Valley Wine, Gin and Chocolate Tour ! It’s a great opportunity to meet some other travelers from around the world, while still enjoying a relatively small group and plenty of attention from a professional guide.

The thing that really sets this tour apart from the rest, is that it’s not just about wine – it’s a deep dive into local culinary culture! This is the only tour that does not include a hotel pickup, which wasn’t really a big deal for us.

After all, the meetup point was St. Paul’s Cathedral in central Melbourne, which was really close to our hotel, anyway.

After we arrived, we immediately boarded our Mercedes-Benz coach, which was super new and comfortable, with big windows and climate control (keep in mind if your party is 20+ people, you’ll be in a larger bus).

After taking off, we made a little break for coffee and kept our eyes peeled for kangaroos before arriving to our first winery (depends a bit on the weather and other factors), then on to the gorgeous Soumah.

Soumah is one of my favorite stops, offering 5 different wine tastings as you overlook gorgeous rolling hills. Four Pillars distillery is up next, where we enjoyed a delicious gin flight where we compared each, with tasty mixers to clear our palates.

Alternatively, you can go to Payten & Jones to taste some wine, vermouth, and/or plenty of their international beer selection. We had a break for lunch at the legendary Hubert Estate, which was quintessentially Australian with some European flavor.

After a couple more visits to renowned wineries, we stopped for a cider tasting beside a lambing nursery, a dairy for the best cheese I’ve ever had in my life, and the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery to wrap things up with a delicious dessert.

5. Yarra Valley Grazing Tour with Champagne Brunch at Chandon

  • Duration:  7 hours
  • Includes:  Snacks, Brunch, Lunch, Alcoholic Beverages

I don’t trust anybody who doesn’t love a good brunch – especially when champagne is involved! The Yarra Valley Grazing Tour with Champagne Brunch at Chandon   offers a little bit of everything, providing insight into just how well Australia does food and drink.

If you’re looking for the perfect outing with friends, family, or your significant other, this is the perfect way to escape the city and head out for some fresh air and food!

The tour starts a bit later than most – at 10:30 – when your guide will arrive at your hotel to pick you and your party up and head out to the legendary Yarra Valley!

Our transportation was simple yet comfortable – offering great views while we relaxed and listened to our guide talking about the history, geology, and wine culture surrounding the area.

We made our first stop at the Yarra Valley Dairy to try some incredible cheeses all made on-site, while washing it down with either wine or coffee.

After that, we made our way to the historic Yering Station Winery, which is not only one of the most beautiful I’ve visited – it also offers a wide array of top-notch wines and is known as the state’s first vineyard.

Next up is the world-famous Domaine Chandon, which has actually been one of my favorites for years, so it was pretty cool to get an exclusive look behind-the-scenes here. At Chandon, we enjoyed a tasting of 3 different sparkling wines along with some shared charcuterie boards and other snacks.

After that, we visited the charming Yering Farm where we learned how to make small-batch wines right from the winemakers, enjoying a few glasses and a cider next to their orchard. I am absolutely not a gin fan, but Four Pillars Distillery changed my opinion of it with a couple of theirs, and then visited a local burger joint!

The Yarra Valley

Victoria’s world-famous Yarra Valley wine region is located a short 45-minute drive from Melbourne’s CBD district. It is home to many old-world and some burgeoning new world wine varietals and is known the world over for its misty, crisp and classic white wines.

Since its establishment as a premium Australian wine region in 1838, the climate and resulting cultivation of particular grape varieties have allowed the region to become known the world over for its chardonnay and pinot noir vintages.

It is located in a foggy valley surrounding the Yarra River, making it a prime location for cold weather winemaking.

Favoured by Wine Connoisseurs

Yarra Valley is well known for a range of chardonnay styles that are light and elegant with citrusy acidity and stone fruit and fig flavours. Its pinot noir has rich, ripe berry tangs, while its shiraz has either a bold or light savoury flavour. Other varietals include cabernet sauvignon and méthode traditionnelle sparkling wine, which you can sample at our Yarra Valley wine tasting.

Compared to wines from warmer regions, Yarra Valley wines are lighter and more versatile for ageing from ten to 20 years or more. However, it is difficult not to indulge in their subtle flavours and rich finish immediately. Booking a winery tour in the Yarra Valley allows you to enjoy them fresh from the barrel.

Comprehensive Tour Options

The Yarra Valley has over 80 cellar doors, each showcasing its diverse terroir and the passion of its winemakers, from Healesville to Coldstream, Yarra Glen, Seville, and Lilydale. Speak to Gather Yarra Valley about our comprehensive options to tour this wine haven.

Rick’s wine tours were fantastic from the beginning, very quick communication, easy to deal with as well. The tour in the Yarra valley was amazing, our driver frank was brilliant, very easy to get along and ensured we were on time to all wineries! we attended a range of different wineries and all of them were brilliant. Book Your Yarra Valley Tour – Tee Pee Tours

Craving a scenic bus ride or fun with friends and family? With daily tours across Melbourne, chat with us at 0423 237 833 today. We have options for everyone!

Our friendly staff will walk you through available tour packages, customise your tour based on your preferences and handle every detail to make your Yarra Valley tour memorable.

Tee Pee Tours – 5 Step Process

Step 1: first contact: your call, your tour: planning your ideal experience.

After we receive your online contact form or your booking form or you’ve called on  0423 237 833 , our friendly staff will discuss your requirements in detail. We will send options, prices and itinerary options either via email or text.

Whether it’s a wine tour, day trip, brewery tour, hens or bucks party, we’re here to tailor-make the perfect tour for you. Next, we’ll email or text a little more to just get it absolutely perfect for your day out. Some groups can be happy with the very first itinerary we talk about and this process is done in one email. Others want to explore all sorts of options. Either way, we are here for it!

After we get a better understanding of your interests, group size and personal style, we’re more than happy to provide some recommendations. We’ll then confirm where you want to go, what you’re really looking for (Unless ‘half day tour is important?)

Step 2: Make your booking to get the plan locked in

Once we’ve laid out the perfect plan for your day, we’ll send you the details for your approval. After making any necessary changes, we’ll get you to make a booking by paying a deposit on our website by clicking ‘Book Here’, then ‘Private Tours’. This is a non-refundable $100 deposit.

Once this booking is made and the plan is set, we then immediately book all of the venues discussed, allocate a vehicle, a driver and make sure everything is locked in. Sometimes people go straight to this step without contacting us, so we will make sure we get a plan going ASAP after you’ve booked.

Rest assured, our tours are flexible and we’re always happy to tweak things to make sure your day is exactly as you imagined.

Step 3: Rounding up the Troops

From the moment we have received your $100 deposit, things are locked in. We have got everything ready on our end. It’s now your job to start getting everyone organised and find out what your final numbers will be. We also recommend checking for any dietary requirements, finalising the pickup and drop off address, and any other minor details that we may need to know.

If everyone is paying for themselves, then we recommend collecting payments from them ASAP so we can get a good idea on numbers early. It’s in everyone’s best interest for this number to be communicated honestly, realistically, and frequently. The number of people dictates the price, the vehicle we use and the driver who can drive that vehicle.

Step 4: The Week Before and the Final Email

7 days before the tour, we will email you to give you all the very final details so you won’t have any more questions. This final email will include the driver’s details, the itinerary, rules expected behaviours, vehicle details and payment instructions. Payment will be via bank transfer/invoice or a payment link can be sent.

We do not require full payment until 2 days before the tour. Once payment is made and we are all good to go, there’s nothing left to do, except drink!

Step 5: The Day of Your Tour

On the day of your tour, our professional and friendly staff will be there to pick you up and drop you off wherever we have discussed and planned. Our guides provide recommendations, plenty of banter and overall, make sure everything runs smoothly. We have a bit of a common sense approach to the day.

If we feel something isn’t working or that people need more of this or less of this, we are always happy to add a few bottles on the table, or a cheese platter or whatever we think is reasonable. We want to make sure this is the best day ever so you’ll join us once again!

Self-Guided Wine Tour of Yarra Valley

Yarra Valley winery

Self Guided Tour of The Yarra Valley

Looking for a self-guided wine tour of Yarra Valley? The Yarra is one of the world’s top wine areas in large part due to its distinctive scenery. It traverses the valley bottom, following the recognizable and culturally significant Yarra River, which eventually weaves its way towards Melbourne, with mountains on either side acting as welcome, open arms.

The Yarra Valley has been a source of sustenance for its traditional guardians, the Wurundjeri people, since the start of humanity. This cultural significance gives the land a historical depth that has influenced the ideals of those who work it and spans more than 50,000 years.

Over time, there have been significant agricultural expansions in the area. The Kulin people turned 4,850 acres of Coranderrk Station forest into one of the Yarra Valley’s most fruitful locations between 1863 and 1875. This became the location of Victoria’s first vineyard in 1838.

This vineyard would later go on to produce the first Grand Prix winner in the southern hemisphere in 1889, starting the region’s lengthy list of wine awards. The Yarra Valley, Australia’s top cool-climate region has more than eighty vineyards spreading out throughout Healesville, Coldstream, Yarra Glen, Seville, and Lilydale.

Yarra Valley Layout

The geological conditions of the Yarra Valley wine region are different. A variety of continental, maritime, and cool climates that define the region are produced by its proximity to the sea and elevation, which ranges from 50 to 1250 meters above sea level.

To the north, the historic mountain soil reflects a lovely local history. Its richness is increased by traces of shattered sandstone scattered across the soil. The Lower and Upper Valley’s other main soil type is significantly younger and extremely friable.

The Yarra Valley, less than an hour’s drive from Melbourne, will make you feel like you are in a different country since it has top-notch local cuisine and wine, stunning scenery, cozy retreats, and luxurious activities. The Yarra Valley is one of the top wine-growing regions in the world, boasting more than 80 spectacular cellar doors, first-rate eateries serving seasonal fare, opulent lodging, and more.

With picturesque winding roads leading to charming hilltop communities, the Dandenong Ranges is a refuge of undiscovered surprises. Along with several artist studios, craft shops, and world-famous gardens to visit, there are also many walking and cycling trails through mountain ash forests and pure, clean air. This is a must-visit wine region for wine lovers .

Early autumn, around March, is the ideal time to visit the Yarra Valley because it is grape harvest season. This is when you will locate the season’s most recent wines. The weather is pretty lovely at the end of the spring, and it can be a good time to travel.

The Yarra Valley, Victoria’s first wine region was founded in 1838; but, 100 years later, the majority of its vines had been uprooted, and the region’s future appeared bleak. By 1937, there were no vineyards in the Yarra Valley due to a combination of factors, including the economic slump and competition from other wine regions.

The region saw a renaissance in the 1960s and 1970s when Dr. Bailey Carrodus, a scientist, created the first commercial wines in the area in more than 50 years, and Reg Egan from Wantirna Estate replanted the first vines. Bailey was a trailblazer noted for his distinctively delicate wines and brave vineyard choices.

When irrigation and big yields were the norms, he planted low-yielding, unirrigated vines. In an era when warm-climate wine areas and robust wines were in the spotlight, he embraced the Yarra Valley’s cool climate and leaner wine styles.

One of the many intrepid pioneers who gave the area new life through unafraid experimentation and ingenuity was Bailey. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, large, strong wine styles from places like the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale wowed critics and wine connoisseurs, ushering Australian wine into a golden age.

The chilly environment of the area put Yarra Valley growers in a difficult situation because they were unable to produce certain styles. Many people made the choice to accept their differences. Instead of attempting to replicate popular wines, they looked inward and learned more about the particular climate and soils of the Yarra Valley.

They started by creating wines that were unique to their grape sites and reflected those sites. These pioneers also began experimenting with various winemaking methods and paved the way for Australian wine produced in chilly climates. They influenced a new generation of winemakers in the process.

The region has two sub-regions, Upper Yarra and the Valley Floor, each with its own terroir and climate because it is located in a valley.

Valley Floor

The Melba Highway and the Maroondah Highway both follow the path of the valley bottom, which is home to the cities of Lilydale, Yarra Glen, and Healesville. The sub-regions gently sloping hills are often warmer than other sections of the region because the majority of it is located between 50 and 80 meters above sea level. With patches of granite in Yarra Glen and limestone close to Kangaroo Ground and Lilydale, the region primarily has grey soils.

Upper Yarra

Seville, Warburton, and Hoddles Creek are located along the Upper Yarra, which spans the majority of the southern side of the valley. The area’s most famous grape varieties, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, are produced by the younger, fertile red soils of this sub-region in combination with a milder climate brought on by its increasing elevation (up to about 400 meters) and south-westerly winds after March.

What are the Best Wine Grapes Grown in Yarra Valley?

The grapes planted here include Pinot Noir , Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Riesling. The latter is presumably the one that is most commonly recognized as the distinctive wine variety of the Yarra Valley.

Here are some of the best historic sites we think you should visit on your self guided tour of Yarra Valley.

Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail

A well-known 39 km recreation trail for horseback riders, cyclists, and pedestrians is the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail. Starting at the back of the Lilydale Railway Station and ending in Warburton village, the trail follows the route of the ancient railway line through the breathtaking Yarra Valley. The “Warburton Trail” will take you past vineyards, picturesque mountain vistas, farms, and woodlands.

Buddha Bodhivana Monastery

Ajahn Chah, also known as Phra Bodhinyana Thera, was a revered and renowned north-east Thai meditation master who founded Buddha Bodhivana Monastery as a branch monastery. He passed away in 1992. The monastic complex’s resident teacher and the abbot is Venerable Ajahn Kalyano.

Yarra Ranges Regional Museum

All year long, the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum offers engaging, educational, and entertaining events. A few of the attractions for all age groups are their unique exhibitions, permanent collection, a calm café, museum shop, and programs for all ages.

The Yarra Valley is one of the most popular wine regions in the world for a reason. Given that Melbourne is only an hour away, it is ideal for weekend getaways, day trips and self-guided wine tours. There are more than 160 wineries in the area, giving guests a variety of places to sample the wines.

Hubert Estate

The Ryan Hospitality Group (The Prince, Mitchelton Winery, Nagambie Brewery & Distillery) and St Hubert’s, one of the Yarra Valley’s oldest producers, union-produced Hubert Estate. With a thorough makeover of St. Hubert’s current footprint, the winery and cellar door is poised to become the newest must-visit destination in the area, converting the breathtaking site into a dual-level estate. Cera Stribley, a renowned architectural and interior design firm, is to be credited with the venue’s redesign.

The team behind Dixons Creek’s Fin Wine and Cré Wine established a cellar door/restaurant in March 2021. You can sample wines, ciders, and plaquettes created with “minimum faffery” here. These drinks are also referred to as lo-fi or low-intervention drinks. Up back, there is a tasting area with a large wine wall, and a few tables and most of the seating is outside (smart). During the winter, there are only two weekends of operation; however, service is more frequent in the spring.

Rob Dolan Wines

The vineyard uses fruit from all across Victoria to produce a great selection of cool-climate wines, from the budget-friendly, fruit-forward True Colors line to the upscale Signature Series bottles. There are exquisite cabernet sauvignons, a grape with a long history in the Yarra Valley , as well as the conventional chardonnay and pinot noir from the Yarra Valley (including a fantastic Chardy with malolactic fermentation).

Herd Bar & Grill

This underground bunker is located just off the main thoroughfare in the burgeoning Healesville. A collection of warm blond wood slats standing at attention like a bundle of matchsticks makes this structure one of the most distinctive in the neighborhood. Inside, there is a remarkable contrast between different genres and textures. Former Gigi Baba chef Trevor Schneider’s substantially updated Modern Australian menu offers big sharing meals and hearty flavors at fantastically low rates. Note that sitting is available at the bar, at tables, or in the lounge sections, and that the cuisine is meant to be shared.

Immerse Restaurant

Inside Immerse Restaurant

Pic: Inside Immerse Restaurant

The Age Good Food Guide has recognized the highly regarded Immerse restaurant for seven years straight, and it never ceases to impress. To create a genuinely fantastic dining experience, local farm goods and seasonal dishes are combined by Italian-trained chef David Poskus. The restaurant has high ceilings, exposed brickwork, and warm woods, which give it a country-rural vibe reminiscent of the Yarra Valley.

Where Should I Stay on a Wine Tour of Yarra Valley?

Amelina cottages.

Amelina Cottages, which provide views of both gardens and mountains, is only a 6-minute stroll from Marysville’s downtown. There is adjacent free private parking. Gallipoli Park is a 10-minute walk away from the 4.5-star Amelina Cottages Marysville, while Marysville Golf Club is a 3-minute drive away. The distance to Buxton Ridge Winery is 12 minutes by car. A warm spa bath or winter nights in front of the fireplace are both options for visitors. Using the available private BBQ facilities or the fully equipped kitchen, you can make a delicious supper.

Tuck Inn Yarra Valley

The historic Yarra Valley Railway and Healesville’s main street are also within one minute and five minutes walk, respectively, from the free Wi-Fi-equipped Tuck Inn Yarra Valley. The RACV Country Club Golf Course is 5 minutes away by car from Tuck Inn Yarra Valley. Within a 10-minute walk, you may reach Coronation Park and Queens Park. Driving time from Melbourne’s city center is an hour. The air-conditioned apartments include a TV, a kitchenette, and a private bathroom with a shower, hairdryer, and complimentary toiletries. There are free amenities, towels, and bed linens in every room.

How Can I Save Money in Yarra Valley?

With numerous places and wineries to visit, visitors can go beyond their budgets, which is not that pleasant. One of the best ways to save money is to avoid expensive accommodations and transportation. It is good to stay near the wineries and other sites you intend to visit to cut down the cost of transportation.

Wine Tours of the Yarra Valley Final Thoughts

Follow the meandering roads through the Yarra Valley, and you will find something for everyone: world-class wines and artisan beer, well-kept gardens and national parks, hot air balloon rides, and skydiving. One of Australia’s best wine areas is only around an hour’s drive from Melbourne, and while some visitors come for day visits to the cellar doors, the Yarra Valley has a lot more to offer than just sipping fine wine.

In this unique region of the Victorian countryside, life moves at a different pace. Here, you may browse specialty stores and boutiques in small towns, visit art museums and nature sanctuaries, and sample local chocolate, cheese, tea, and other goods.

The vibe: The Yarra Valley remains Victoria’s premier urban getaway because there is so much to do, see, eat, and drink there. Boutique hotels nestled in the forest, some of Australia’s top wineries, well-known cheese shops, and some genuinely magnificent drives can all be found here. Pack your bags for a sneaky weekend getaway or prepare for a week of relaxation. You won’t regret your decision.

8 of the best Yarra Valley cafes

Travel Journalist

04 September 2024

Time

From inventive takes on brunch classics to comforting, tried and true dishes, you can find just about anything at these Yarra Valley cafes.

The glut of great local produce hasn’t been lost on these Yarra Valley cafes, which are as committed to purveying outstanding coffee as they are to offering nourishing, elevated and indulgent seasonal dishes.

Planning a visit to the Yarra Valley ? Punctuate a day in this bucolic pocket with pit stops at these eight Yarra Valley cafes for maximum caffeine, sustenance and joy.

1. Round Bird Food & Wine Merchants

Best for:  Brunch, comfort food

When the former head chef at Yering Station’s restaurant, Laura Webb-James, and the restaurant manager, Evan James, decided to break away and do their own thing, they wanted to create a place where they’d cook the kind of food they’d make for house guests.

Stop by Round Bird Food & Wine Merchants for brunch.

And what lucky friends they must have, because at Round Bird Food & Wine Merchants  those dishes might include truffled mushroom ‘croque monsieur’ on brioche with mornay sauce, shaved ham and comte, and hotcakes with banana fritters, maple, peanut butter mousse and toasted seeds.

Address:  170 Main St, Lilydale

2. Nancy’s of the Valley

Best for:  Retro charm

At Nancy’s of the Valley  you may find yourself smiling as soon as you step through the door. There’s something about the mish mash of retro laminate and old wooden tables with mixed chairs from different decades that feels good even before you’ve seen the seasonal and, where possible, organic menu options.

Nancy’s of the Valley cafe features a nostalgic design.

There’s a separate menu for vegans, and coeliacs are also well catered for, and along with the organic fair trade and locally roasted Silva coffee there are organic teas and turmeric and chai lattes. And there’s a good milkshake selection too if you’re feeling that retro theme.

Address:  3/2460 Warburton Hwy, Yarra Junction

3. Black Vice Cafe and Roastery

Best for: Caffeine fiends

On the region’s outer fringe, Hurstbridge Village (or Hursty, as it’s endearingly known) flies a little under the radar. Its major claim to fame is arguably Greasy Zoe’s , a standout local restaurant. But just a few paces from the hatted micro-venue, you’ll find another crowd-pleaser: Black Vice Cafe and Roastery .

a man carrying his child to Black Vice Cafe and Roastery, Yarra Valley

Black Vice is kid- and dog-friendly cafe.

As the name suggests, this kid- and dog-friendly cafe roasts its own beans, drawing in coffee enthusiasts from across the region; there’s a two-page menu that lists the available blends and single origins alone. The indecisive, or overwhelmed, can opt for the ‘caffeinate me’ set, which includes a milk coffee, a batch brew, and an espresso, all from its seasonal single origin menu.

The under-the-radar Black Vice Cafe and Roastery is an ultimate crowd-pleaser.

The all-day brunch menu offers a more tightly curated selection, spanning the classics (eggs Benny, avo toast etc), as well as a handful of burgers.

4. Locavore Studio

Best for: Creative, elevated flavours

Helmed by chef Jessie Rae Crossley, whose resume includes stints behind the burners at restaurants across Europe, as well as in the kitchens of super yachts and ski chalets, the menu at Locavore Studio  is decidedly cheffy.

Forget your garden variety eggs on toast: at Locavore, you’ll find complex flavours with nods to several different corners of the globe on the ever-changing seasonal menu.

Those in the savoury breakfast camp might opt for a chilli scramble served with fermented garlic and preserved lemon labneh, oyster mushrooms, sesame and peanut crisp and fried mint, while sweet tooths can gorge on a towering heap of black sesame pancakes that feature cameos from rosella jam, peanut butter ganache and fermented strawberry ice cream.

Almost any dietary (nut-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, veggie or vegan) will find a delectable option to pursue here.

Address: 148 Main St, Lilydale

5. The Yarra Valley Smokery

Best for: Carnivores

While a smattering of vego options lie on the menu at this Lilydale eatery, it’s the locally sourced and house-smoked meats that are the real trump card. The 18-hour-smoked beef brisket is a standout, and comes in three different iterations. And for a wildcard appetiser, try out the smoked dim sims. Stock up on provisions from The Yarra Valley Smokery’s cafe larder, such as pastrami, salmon, cheese and butter. Two words of advice for first timers: come hungry.

Address: 96 Main St, Lilydale

6. Harrow and Harvest Cafe

Best for: Parents after their brunch fix, insta-friendly food

A cosy, eclectically styled venue in Lilydale, Harrow and Harvest Cafe  ticks all kinds of boxes. Artfully plated breakfast, brunch and lunch dishes in a riot of colours.

An array of innovative and decadent drinks (hello iced white chocolate with matcha dust and whipped cream). An open fireplace to cosy up next to in winter, as well as a sun-licked courtyard to exploit come summer.

Not to mention a huge indoor kid’s playroom, packed with beautiful wooden toys. All packed into a cute little converted former church that dates back to the 1890s.

Address: 42-44 Castella St, Lilydale

7. Arthurs Creek Coffee Company

Best for:  Community vibes, coffee nerds

The focus at this Warrandyte cafe might lie primarily with the coffee — they roast their own fair-trade sourced beans after all. But you’ll find a small selection of pastries, cakes and toasties on offer here too, including some gluten-free options.

Arthurs Creek’s  knowledgeable baristas are on hand to help you select the perfect single origin beans for your brew. And you can stock up on coffee gear, peruse the collection of locally made jams, and admire the local artworks lining the walls too.

See also Silva Coffee Roasters , Warburton.

Address: 272 Yarra St, Warrandyte

8. My Little Kitchen Cafes & Bar

Best for:  Inventive twists on classic dishes

Something of a local haunt, the guiding philosophy at My Little Kitchen  (or MLK to regulars) is to put a fresh spin on classic brunch dishes.

a brunch meal alongside drinks at My Little Kitchen, Yarra Valley

Enjoy inventive takes on classic brunch dishes.

Think avo on toast, but with lemon cream cheese, coconut sambal, and Four Pillars gin hollandaise. Or a shakshuka, zhuzhed up with braised lamb shoulder and a harissa-spiked tomato sauce. Given its popularity, online bookings are highly recommended on weekends.
