10 Upcoming Movies Trying To Be The "New Barbie"

Why there are faces in lord of the rings' dead marshes, 10 best blade quotes in all 3 wesley snipes movies.

Screen Rant can exclusively present a first look at the Barbie: Epic Road Trip trailer, which takes Mattel's Barbie movies to the next level. On October 25, Netflix will introduce the world to the first-ever interactive special for the Barbie IP, which has been a part of pop culture for over 50 years. The newest film follows recent animated hits such as Barbie: Mermaid Power and Barbie: It Takes Two , both of which center on Brooklyn and Malibu, two best friends traveling the country to make their music dreams come true.

Barbie “Malibu” Roberts and Barbie “Brooklyn” Roberts are back at it again in Epic Road Trip , which expands on the characters and storylines first introduced in 2021's Barbie: Big City, Big Dreams . Both Barbies are joined by Skipper and Ken on yet another cross-country trip, but this time of a very different nature. After Skipper develops an app meant to help rescue dogs find owners, the friends take the DreamCamper on a mission to unite their furry friends with new homes. Of course, things take a turn when a dream audition lands in their lap, forcing them—and the audience—to make some crucial decisions. Check out Screen Rant 's exclusive first look at the trailer below:

As seen above, the action wastes no time kicking off in the Barbie: Epic Road Trip trailer. Just as Brooklyn and Malibu are happily committing to their puppy delivery program, they receive the life-changing opportunity to be backup singers for a huge star. They could continue helping the Malibu Rescue Center like they promised Skipper they would, using Ken's slow and scenic route, or they could try to hightail it along the express route. The Barbies are unlikely to skimp out on their duties, but they may miss out on some memorable moments along the way depending on what they do—and that's up to the viewers to decide.

Barbie: Epic Road Trip Gives The Power Of Choice

Using interactive technology, which Netflix has made use of for many specials , Barbie: Epic Road Trip hands the narrative reins over to the viewers. Barbie fans will have the chance to decide the road Brooklyn and Malibu take, which over a hundred different decisions to make along the way for a total of 500 combinations. Not only will this allow children to become more immersed in the storytelling, but it also teaches them about the consequences of their actions and emphasizes the importance of personal responsibility.

Barbie: Epic Road Trip is only one in a long list of options available to Barbie fans on Netflix. Brooklyn and Malibu's adventures can be enjoyed on Barbie: Big City, Big Dreams , Barbie: It Takes Two , and Barbie Mermaid Power , or kids and families can select Barbie Dolphin Magic, Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures , and much more for a different set of characters in the beloved Mattel IP. The choice is theirs, although nowhere is that more evident than in Epic Road Trip .

Educational Value

The characters travel across the country and stop in some key geographical locations. At least one historical reference is mentioned. The story could open conversations about starting a career after college, though the Barbies make it look unrealistically easy to land fame and fortune.

Positive Messages

Pursue your dreams but don't lose sight of who you are or who is important to you. Life is a series of trade-offs and choices. Sometimes detours are more important than the destination because life is about the journey.

Positive Role Models

Friends and siblings stick together and support each other. Young adult characters are responsible and entrepreneurial. The characters do a good deed by matching and delivering foster dogs to forever homes. Barbie shows that young women can pursue careers and romantic relationships at the same time, but sometimes they have to choose.

Diverse Representations

Barbie's best friend, also named Barbie, is Black. Secondary characters represent a diversity of races.

Parents need to know that the animated interactive movie Barbie: Epic Road Trip sees Barbie and Ken taking their relationship to the next level, with one iteration ending in a kiss and others featuring hugs and hand-holding. Barbie and her best friend Barbie are considering moving across the country to pursue a career, and the film has messages about women pursuing careers versus relationships, destiny versus dreams, and enjoying the journey as much as the destination. On their road trip, the gang has a few incidents, including falls and near-crashes, with no injuries. A scene where two characters lose control of their hang-glider could be a little scary for young or sensitive kids, as could a scene where a character tells a ghost story. What's the Story?

In BARBIE: EPIC ROAD TRIP, Barbie (voiced by America Young ) and her best friend Barbie ( Tatiana Varria ) pack up the pink van and head east from Malibu to Brooklyn. The two have been invited to audition as back-up singers for a well-known musician. Along the way, they will drop foster dogs off at forever homes found through sister Skipper's ( Kirsten Day ) new app. Along for the ride, Ken ( Ritesh Rajan ) will attempt to tell Barbie how he really feels about her.

Is It Any Good?

Considering the likely anticipated audience of younger kids, the portrayal of responsible, generous, and entrepreneurial young adults here is welcome. The interactivity of Barbie: Epic Road Trip also offers viewers an active and fun role in selecting outcomes for the characters. The narrative is woven together quite smoothly despite a range of alternative options to choose from. In each, Barbie and the gang behave responsibly and kindly, though she does appear to have to choose between love and career in most iterations. One other complaint: the writers could really drop the attempts at slang. Making "Brooklyn" Barbie say things like "cray," "tagging," and "swag" is forced and cringey. The dogs and their foster storyline add some sweetness to the tale.

How do you think an interactive movie works? Did you try multiple options for the characters?

Were there some outcomes you preferred over others? Did you expect the ending to change so much with different choices? Was there one ending or path you liked more than others, and why?

Barbie: Epic Road Trip (2022)

road trip barbie

Barbie: Epic Road Trip is a first for Barbie, taking after the interactive DVD games of the 2000s. I appreciate the step in a new direction, but I really wish I could fast forward more than ten seconds at a time. You don’t realize how much of a deal breaker that is until you’re in too deep.

The story of Epic Road Trip changes wildly depending on the choices you make over the course of the story. Malibu, Brooklyn, Skipper, and Ken are on a road trip from California to New York, and along the way, they need to drop off dogs as part of Skipper’s new app. The audience gets to choose between a scenic or express route, and you can change your viewing experience and length with the many choices along the way.

Since there’s so much to cover with this story, the audience is left to balance the friendships and relationships Barbie has with the other people on the trip. I felt a bit bad about the choices I had to make though; I didn’t want to disappoint anyone, but you have to make sacrifices for the story. It’s relatively low-stakes, but it still feels like a lot, and some of the choices can have a massive impact even if you don’t see it at first.

The story has six total endings and two different points that go back to an earlier part of the movie. I thought the story overall was fun, but it was a bit slow in pace for my liking. Watching all of the different versions of the movie takes two and a half hours total if you’re watching it with no breaks, but in practice, it takes much longer because of how much rewatching you need to do. That can definitely discourage people from wanting to see everything the story has to offer, and if you want to go for a completion style story, it can get a bit frustrating at times.

Epic Road Trip has a fun premise, but its pacing it slow, and seeing everything takes a longer time than it should.

Story: 4/10

The characters in Epic Road Trip are overall nice. I enjoy Malibu and Brooklyn’s dynamic as per usual, and Skipper is a lot of fun too. Ken is nice, and it’s sweet to see him and Malibu finally spark a relationship after having feelings for each other for so long.

The character arcs change depending on what routes you decide to take, but for the most part, the focus is on Malibu and Ken starting a relationship. Brooklyn and Skipper don’t really develop all that much, and they feel kind of flat when compared to Malibu and Ken. If you choose to not pursue a relationship with Ken, then it feels like no one really goes anywhere. It’s kind of disappointing how much time you spend only for the characters to not really give much in return. There are other movies where these characters are better and more entertaining to watch, and honestly, I would rather go there if I miss this cast.

The characters of Epic Road Trip are fine enough, but I struggle to enjoy them fully because of the medium holding back their character development.

Characters: 4/10

World Building

The world building of Epic Road Trip is… Interesting. For the most part, it feels realistic, but there are a few points with aliens and vampires that break that realism. It’s kind of hard to really feel like you have a grasp on the world when everything is prone to change in supernatural ways. The jokes about the supernatural are forecasted, but it still feels bizarre when you’re actually faced with it, especially with the way it drops you off earlier in the story.

I want to say that it’s easy to ignore these options and move in a different direction, but it comes up enough times to feel strange and hard to understand. A story that’s mostly realistic but breaks the world building every once in a while for a dip into the supernatural feels strange and a bit hard to get back into once it happens. It feels inconsistent, and I don’t like it much.

Aside from that, the world building is fine, but it’s admittedly a bit hard to understand because of how much it relies on other Barbie movies. In other cases, you can watch Barbie movies without issues even if they’re sequels. You’re filled in enough to know what’s going on, and you can pick up on everything new. In this case, there are a lot of references to other Barbie media to the point that it gets hard to keep track of. In order to fully understand this movie and the relationships at play, you need to watch two seasons of a television show and a few movies. It’s hard to get into if you don’t know what’s going on, and I imagine a lot of people wouldn’t know.

The world building of Epic Road Trip is inconsistent, and it references other material frequently enough to be almost hard to follow.

World Building: 3/10

This movie doesn’t present a theme at the end of the credits, so I have come up with one instead. The main theme of Epic Road Trip is about finding a happy medium between pursuing your career and personal life. I think the theme works very well with the medium of the story. You can take it in different directions depending on the interactive choices you select, and I think that’s interesting given the unique format of the story. You can get different mileage out of the story depending on what you pick, so I don’t know how much I can judge this category. It works at different levels depending on the circumstances.

Themes: 4/10

Epic Road Trip is unique movie because of its format. The film is interactive, and you can choose all sorts of scenes depending on your preferences. There are twenty different choices in total, and for the most part, they’re all fun romps. They’re quaint, but there’s not all that much else to them, and the number of choices weighs down the pacing by a lot.

The production is unique, but I struggle to agree with it entirely. There’s one main problem that I think holds this movie back: the lack of a fast forward option. If you want to see all of the choices in this movie, you have to go through it six times for six different endings. This wouldn’t be a problem if you could fast forward or use scene select, but you are instead restricted to skipping ahead in ten second intervals. As I said before, the combined footage for all of the scenes and all of the choices is two and a half hours long. Skipping through a two and a half hour movie at ten second intervals just to see a new outcome is ridiculous. There’s no reason to not give a fast forward button. Just skip ahead until a choice and then stop the fast forward by force! Then the audience can make the choice and then see something new! It wouldn’t be hard!

While this sounds like a small issue, it’s a massive one in the long run. I saw a few endings of this movie, but I didn’t feel encouraged to see all of them because of how long it would take to get through them. Skipping in ten second intervals is unbearable for something this long, and the movie doesn’t let you skip when a choice is coming up or a scene is about to change. This turns any rewatches into massive slogs as you either sit through something you’ve already seen or try desperately to skip so you can get to something new. The fast forward you do get has lag too. You don’t realize how big of a problem this is until you’re in too late. It’s awful, and it wouldn’t get better without quality of life changes.

While I enjoy the idea of Epic Road Trip, I hate the lack of a fast forward button, and it really weighs down the rest of the production.

Production: 1/10

Barbie: Epic Road Trip is a unique story told in a unique format. While it works to the movie’s favor at times, it doesn’t work as well at other points, and it can interfere with your enjoyment of the movie. The story, characters, and presentation are fun, but the production leaves a lot to be desired, and it holds back the movie massively on repeat viewings.

Overall: 3.2/10

The animated movie is the first interactive special for Mattel.

'Barbie: Epic Road Trip' on Netflix

Everyone loves a good road trip , and who could make it more fun for kids (of all ages) than Barbie? This month, the beloved franchise is getting its very first interactive special — and first Netflix original — in Barbie: Epic Road Trip . Not only does your family get to tag along as Barbie “Malibu” Roberts and Barbie “Brooklyn” Roberts hit the open road, but you also get to help decide to course of their journey, thanks to state-of-the-art technology.

Did we mention the special also includes puppies, singing, and Barbie’s classic messages of empowerment and friendship ? Count us in! It all starts when Barbie’s little sis Skipper creates an app to help connect rescue dogs with new owners. So, with Barbie’s trademark spirit of generosity, Malibu, Brooklyn, Skipper, and Ken hop into the DreamCamper to deliver adopted pups to their “fur-ever” homes all over the country. As if that wasn’t adventure enough, Malibu and Brooklyn get an exciting offer: to audition to be backup singers for one of their favorite stars. The only catch? They have to make it back to New York City in three days.

Here’s where viewers come in — to help Malibu, Brooklyn, Skipper, and Ken get back, you must make a series of choices. Each of those choices could put the friends on a different road… literally! With more than 100 decisions and 500 possible outcomes, it’s the kind of movie your kids will want to watch again and again to see how all of the possibilities play out. And you won’t even mind, because as you can tell from Scary Mommy’s exclusive clip below, this special is super cute. You’ll probably have Brooklyn and Malibu singing “Flip the Script” stuck in your head for days (in a good way).

'Barbie: Epic Road Trip' on Netflix

“Giving viewers the opportunity to choose different versions of Barbie’s stories is an all-new way for Mattel Television to deepen the worldwide audience’s experience of watching Barbie content,” says Christopher Keenan, Senior Vice President, Global Content & Executive Producer, Mattel Television. “As kids and parents immerse themselves in the world of Barbie, they can take part in crafting a multitude of adventures for Malibu and Brooklyn, along with Ken and sister Skipper, by making choices for the characters at every twist and turn. You’ll feel great about letting them watch, since there are some stellar life lessons along the way: the value of friendship, the significance of personal responsibility, the importance of personal growth, and, ultimately, the beauty of choosing your own path.

Happily, there’ll be more from Mattel to come on Netflix — Mattel Television inked a multi-year content partnership with the streamer. Currently available to watch are Barbie: Mermaid Power and Barbie: It Takes Two . Next up? Barbie: Epic Road Trip .

Netflix And Mattel Are Developing A Barbie Interactive Animated Special

Barbie Epic Road Trip Face

Director Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" movie starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken is currently in the midst of production and slated for a July 21, 2023 release. While this is far from the first time Barbie will serve as the subject of a feature film, it will mark the first official live-action "Barbie" release, as well as the first major motion picture amidst what have otherwise been exclusively animated, made-for-TV and/or streaming exclusive projects.

Meanwhile, Netflix recently became home to a brand new "He-Man" cartoon series upon the debut of Kevin Smith's "Masters of the Universe: Revelation" in 2021. "He-Man," notably, originated as a Mattel action figure. Mattel is also the company that invented and continues to produce Barbie dolls, and therefore owns the very same "Barbie" IP that Gerwig, Robbie, Gosling et al. are adapting for their upcoming film.

Netflix is already home to some "Barbie" content, like "Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse," which is arguably one of the best cartoons on Netflix . Now, a new deal inked between Mattel and the streaming service will bring plenty more "Barbie" projects to Netflix, including an interactive special in the style made popular by "Black Mirror: Bandersnatch" years prior.

Barbie: Epic Road Trip will put viewers in charge of an animated Barbie adventure

According to an article published by The Hollywood Reporter on October 21, Netflix and Mattel officialized a multi-year contract that will make Netflix home to multiple upcoming "Barbie" projects, some of which will remain exclusive to the streaming service. First among these is an animated interactive special titled "Barbie: Epic Road Trip," which prompts viewers to make decisions that affect how it plays out. Viewers will supposedly have the opportunity for more than 100 story-altering decisions, allowing for more than 500 distinct outcomes.

"Barbie: Epic Road Trip" follows Barbie "Malibu" Roberts (America Young), Barbie "Brooklyn" Roberts (Tatiana Varria), Ken (Ritesh Rajan), and Skipper Roberts (Kirsten Day) on a road trip with one another, as its title indicates. This group is in the midst of housing animals in need of adoption on their way to auditioning to sing back-up for a famous popstar in New York.

"We've been consistently expanding the presence of Barbie on the ever-growing streaming landscape through episodic series, long-form movies and specials, digital gaming, YouTube short-form content, and now, our first-ever interactive special," said senior VP and general manager of Mattel Television Fred Soulie.

Netflix subscribers can help guide Barbie's latest road trip adventure when "Barbie: Epic Road Trip" premieres to the streaming service on October 25.

Barbie: Epic Road Trip

Barbie: Epic Road Trip is the 41st Barbie movie. It is the first interactive Barbie movie and it was released on Netflix US on October 25, 2022.

  • 1 Description
  • 2.1 Express Route
  • 2.2 Scenic Route
  • 2.3 Ending Requirements

Description [ ]

"In this interactive adventure, Barbie goes on a cross-country trek with friends and makes big decisions about the future. Which dream will she choose?"

"You're in the driver's seat! Help Barbie learn how to make big decisions as she sets off on a journey from Malibu across the country with friends."

After the events of Barbie: It Takes Two season 2, Malibu and Brooklyn spend the summer in California with Malibu's friends and family. Malibu, Brooklyn and Ken go to the beach together and Malibu expresses how she isn't sure of what she wants to do in the future.

Skipper develops Match Mutts, an app meant to help people adopt rescue dogs. Malibu, Brooklyn, Skipper and Ken are going on a cross-country road trip in the DreamCamper to unite the dogs with their new owners. Before they leave, Rafa calls and says Malibu and Brooklyn have an audition to be backup singers for Jacinda, a famous pop star. The audition is in three days.

Express Route [ ]

Brooklyn wants to take an express route to New York so she and Malibu will definitely make the audition. The group can camp at Roswell or keep driving. If they camp, Malibu can either have a bonfire with everyone, or a picnic alone with Ken. During the picnic, Malibu and Ken get scared by a sound. They can run to safety or investigate the sound (the latter causes Malibu and Ken to get abducted by aliens and the viewer goes back to the beach at the beginning.)

If the group keeps driving, they go to New Orleans. Ken wants to see a magic show, while Brooklyn and Skipper want to go dancing. If the girls go dancing while Ken stays with the dogs, they see Jacinda in a club. They can either try to impress Jacinda or play it cool.

The following day, the group can either go to a dog sanctuary or go to Chicago. In Chicago, the group watches a sports game. After going to the sanctuary or sports game, the group goes to the Pennsylvania State Fair. Ken buys tickets for a ferris wheel. Malibu and Brooklyn get a chance to perform. If they perform a long song, it leads to an ending where The Barbies get a record deal and move to London. If they perform a short song, Malibu and Ken get on the ferris wheel after.

On the ferris wheel, Malibu decides whether or not she will be more than friends with Ken. The next day, the group gets stuck in traffic on the way to the audition. Malibu and Brooklyn can run for it or take the subway. If they try to take the subway, they end up getting taken to the audition by aliens instead.

Whichever way the girls get to the audition, the ending changes depending on Malibu's relationship with Ken. If Malibu remain just friends with Ken, then The Barbies get to be in Jacinda's music video as backup singers, and Malibu moves to New York. Malibu and Brooklyn adopt Bella and Ella, and The Barbies wait for their big break. Match Mutts is "on fire" and Ken visits New York a lot. If Malibu and Ken are boyfriend and girlfriend, The Barbies get to be in Jacinda's music video as trees. Malibu moves back to California and adopts Bella and Ella.

Scenic Route [ ]

Ken wants to take the scenic route so Skipper can have more time to use Match Mutts, and also so he can spend more time with Malibu. Malibu agrees and tells Rafa that she and Brooklyn aren't going to the audition. For the start of the trip, the group can go straight to Roswell or stop at Dino Park for Ken. At Dino Park, Malibu can choose a toy from a machine, or get her fortune taken.

The following day, the group goes to the Grand Canyon. They use Match Mutts to find a potential owner for one of the sister dogs (Bella and Ella). They accidentally give the wrong dog away. To get the right dog to the new owner, the group can ride burros or hang glide. The new owner changes his mind because he doesn't want to separate the sister dogs. Ken later wants to be alone with Malibu, but she doesn't take the hint. She can either go find Ken and spend time with him, or think about her relationship with him more.

Match Mutts finds potential owners for the sister dogs, and another dog named Truffles. If the group goes to find the owner for the sister dogs, there is an ending where The Barbies get to be in Jacinda's music video as trees. Malibu stays in New York and The Barbies wait for a big record deal offer. Skipper goes back to California to work on her app. If the group goes to find the owner for Truffles, they go to the state fair after.

At the state fair, Ken buys tickets for a ferris wheel. Malibu and Brooklyn get a chance to perform. If they perform a long song, it leads to an ending where The Barbies get a record deal and move to London. If they perform a short song, Malibu and Ken get on the ferris wheel after. Malibu decides whether or not she will be more than friends with Ken. After, Rafa calls and says he knows of an entrepreneur named Rebecca Lee. Rebecca is interested in investing in Match Mutts, so the next day, the group goes to New York to see her.

Just before the meeting with Rebecca, the Match Mutts app crashes. Skipper can restart the app, which leads to an ending where she gets the investment from Rebecca. Malibu moves back to California to help Skipper run her Match Mutts business. Malibu adopts Bella and Ella and Brooklyn's solo career is "on fire."

If Malibu thinks of a plan B for the meeting, she improvises and uses a Jacinda song. The ending changes depending on her relationship with Ken. If Malibu remains friends with Ken, the Jacinda music video shoot goes badly and Malibu moves back to California. She adopts Bella and Ella. If Malibu is in a relationship with Ken during plan B for the Match Mutts meeting, then The Barbies get to be in Jacinda's music video as backup singers. They also join Jacinda on her world tour. Malibu and Ken move to New York, and The Barbies' music career is "on fire".

Malibu and Brooklyn want to pursue a music career together, but Malibu is unsure if that is the dream she should follow. Malibu prepares for a road trip with Brooklyn, Skipper and Ken. They will use Skipper's new Match Mutts app to help find homes for dogs along the way. Skipper compiled information about the dogs onto the app. When someone is ready to adopt a dog, there will be an alert telling Skipper and the others where to bring the dog. Skipper also helped Ken to make a map that would help them find several interesting places along the way. Skipper thinks that Match Mutts has potential to lead to a business start-up, so she wants as many positive reviews for her app as possible.

Rafa calls The Barbies and announces that they have an audition to be Jacinda's backup singers in a music video. The audition is in New York in three days, so Brooklyn wants to take an express route to New York. Skipper and Ken want to take a scenic route and skip the audition so Skipper can have more time to use Match Mutts, while Ken wants to spend more time with Malibu. The viewer chooses the route.

Scenic Route [ ]

If Malibu chooses the express route, then the first drop off is Blue. The group goes to a dinosaur theme park called Dino Days so they can drop off Blue.

Express Route [ ]

If Malibu chooses the express route, then the first drop off is Blue.

Physical Appearance [ ]

Skipper is a teenage girl with brown hair, blue eyes and light skin. She wears her hair down. There is a purple streak at the front and the ends of her hair are also purple.

Personality [ ]

Skipper loves technology and music. She likes to DJ and she knows how to make apps. The official 2023 Barbie annual's description for Skipper reads: "Barbie's eldest little sister is super-smart and super cool. She loves gadgets and fashion, bust most of all she adores her little pup, DJ ". [1] [2]

Skipper is business-minded and hopes Match Mutts will become a successful start-up. Skipper prefers taking a scenic route because it gives her more time to use Match Mutts.

  • Skipper: [ About Match Mutts ] I've already input every dog's info - their breed, personality, energy level, favorite foods, and not so favorite foods.
  • Skipper: It's really important I make a good impression when we drop off the dogs. I need to get as many good reviews as possible. This could be my ticket to start-up stardom.
  • Skipper: [ To Malibu ] Barbie, take some time and think things over. Once and for all, you need to figure out how you really feel about Ken.

road trip barbie

Seattle Mariners continue to panic in paradise, lose second game to Tampa Bay

Typical of me to go and ruin the party

Everybody says they love me, but I’m still brokenhearted

They call me Polly Pessimism, I’m a macabre Barbie

The Mariners had a chance to go to Florida on this road trip and make a vacation out of it. Enjoy paradise from their position atop the American League West, and make the most of it. They started the road trip dropping two of three to the Guardians, but could have made up for it against the sub .500 teams of the Marlins and the Rays . Then, they dropped two of three against the Marlins. Today, the panic attacks in paradise continued, and with today’s second loss in a row to the Rays the best they can do is win one of three if they can bounce back tomorrow.

Before the Mariners could even dream of mai tais or piña coladas, the Rays kicked over the bar, in full attack mode. The very first pitch of the game thrown by Luis Castillo, an inside sinker, was obliterated by Yandy Díaz to the left field stands for a home run, almost going foul, but towering over the foul poul and staying fair . Castillo would get out of the inning 1-2-3 after that, with two strikeouts, but fell back into trouble again in the second right away. Richie Palacios only needed one pitch, a middle-middle sinker, and he was on second base with a double. Jose Siri needed three pitches, and he sent the 2-0 fastball just outside of the zone into right with a line drive, scoring Palacios from second, and the Rays had an early 2-0 lead.

My [fan base] wants to love me, but I won’t let them

I’ve been predisposed to trauma since [2011]

So I wrote a couple [box scores] to let out some aggression

I hate that I’m so

Things did look up for the Mariners after the second inning, for a while. They could almost taste the coconut. Castillo was not at his sharpest, falling behind into several full counts, and allowing a couple walks, but making it through the bottom of the fifth without allowing any more damage. Before he escaped the fifth by getting old friend José Caballero to strike out to end the inning, he was buoyed by some of the little offense the Mariners managed tonight.

Seattle only managed four hits in five innings against opposing starter Zack Littell, and two in the fifth became the only two earned runs he allowed. Jorge Polanco reached by hitting a ball about as softly as you can for an infield hit, 54.6 mph off of the bat at a -79 degree launch angle, and Ty France crushed a hanging slider for a home run that would be out out in any park, tying the game .

The Mariners went into the sixth inning with a tied ballgame, but things quickly became mismatched. After Julio, Raleigh, and Raley went down easy at the top of the inning, Castillo started the bottom of the sixth with a pop out to Isaac Paredes. Followed by a walk to Richie Palacios. Then a walk to Jose Siri. And when Scott came and grabbed La Piedra, who ended his night on 103 pitches, those runners were still on to be charged against him as earned runs when Big Mike Baumann immediately allowed Taylor Walls to triple past a diving Dominic Canzone , scoring both runners. True to their plan, Walls did it on the first pitch, a middle fastball.

Castillo ended his night with four earned runs on five hits, four strikeouts and four walks. Big Mike Baumann was not done allowing the Big Inning for the Rays, and 4-2 would quickly become 6-2 when he gave up a bomb to next batter Ben Rortvedt. Baumann collected a ground out, Bazardo came in and collected another, and the Mariners escaped the sixth inning but now down four.

Self-deprecating

More comfortable in bad situations

Sucker for a little devastation

And this always happens

Mitch Garver eased the sting just a tiny bit, hitting a solo home run , his tenth of the night, but that only brought the Mariners halfway to the Rays score, and they wouldn’t add any more on the rest of the night.

The Rays weren’t done, and the bullpen woes of the 2024 Mariners continued. Bazardo let Tampa manufacture another three runs in the seventh. A leadoff walk to Josh Lowe. A stolen base by Josh Lowe. Bazardo reached two outs by striking out Paredes and Caballero, but then let Palacios single in Lowe. Then walked Jose Siri. Bazardo gave way to Cody Bolton, and after a Taylor Walls single to load them up, a Rortvedt single allowed both inherited runners to score, giving Bazardo three earned runs on the night and putting the Rays up 9-3. Cody Bolton didn’t want to be left out of the earned runs party, but unfortunately since Caballero reached on an error before Isaac Paredes hit a home run to score him, Bolton was scored as having given up none earned on the night. With that, the Rays reached their final score of 11-3.

Ty France had the only multi-hit night, going 2-for-3, and the team only managed six total hits across all nine innings. JP Crawford worked the only walk for Seattle, and as a team they struck out eleven times. The starting pitching continues to be good, but not good enough, on a day when the hitting continues to freeze in panic and the bullpen melts down past the top leverage guys. They still have first place in their division, but if the team keeps playing like this, the sun will set on that paradise soon enough.

Panic attacks in paradise

Hyperventilating under candy skies

Tellin’ myself that this is fine

I’m havin’ the best time of my life
