5 Reasons Why Your Cruise Control Stopped Working

Cruise Control Not Working

It would be difficult to find a vehicle on the road today without cruise control. This invaluable feature makes driving long distances easier but can also cause trouble when it malfunctions. Understanding the reasons your cruise control stopped working ensures that you can get the problem fixed quickly for a more enjoyable ride.

While this fault can cause issues with the cruise control system itself, there could also be an effect on the acceleration of your vehicle. That’s why you want to have it looked at as soon as you notice a problem. Let’s take a quick look at the reasons your cruise control may have stopped working.

Reasons Why Your Cruise Control Stopped Working

The most common reason a cruise control stops working is due to a blown fuse or a defective brake pedal switch . It can also be caused by issues with the throttle control system or the ABS. In older cruise control systems, it can be caused by a broken vacuum line.

Here is a more detailed list of the possible reasons your cruise control is not working:

1. Blown Fuse

broken fuse

All electrical systems in the vehicle are controlled by fuses. Your cruise control system is attached to a fuse that can blow if there is a short circuit or fault. Without a good fuse, the cruise control system can’t work at all.

Thankfully, it’s not difficult to find and replace a blown fuse. Look in the owner’s manual to find the fuse that corresponds with the cruise control technology.

2. Defective Brake Pedal Switch

push brake pedal

The brake pedal switch is responsible for turning the brake lights on and off based on the pedal position. Cruise control systems are designed to disengage whenever your brake pedal gets pressed.

Because the cruise control is wired into the brake pedal switch, any fault can cause it to stop working. When the brake pedal switch malfunctions, the car believes the brakes are engaged, causing the system to turn off automatically. Not only that, but your car’s brake light might also be stuck on, leaving confused drivers in your wake.

3. Malfunctioning Speed Sensor

abs sensor close

Speed sensors are located on every wheel or differential. The purpose of these sensors is to monitor the speed of the wheels to determine if traction control is needed.

The speed sensors are also part of the cruise control system. When a sensor fails, the cruise control can stop working and the speedometer might act strange as well.

If there is an issue with a speed sensor, it will often show with an ABS warning light or a check engine light on the dashboard.

4. Electrical Issues

cruise control buttons

The cruise control system is electronic, with many components working together to make the system operate. If the cruise control fails to work, you want to check the wiring harness and associated connectors for a fault.

You also need to ensure that the voltage source is supplying enough power to the system. Even the smallest fault can cause defects with the cruise control. In many cases, there can be an issue with the cruise control lever or buttons causing the cruise control to not engage.

If your cruise control buttons are located on the steering wheel it could also be caused by a bad clock spring, which is located behind the steering wheel.

Check the system with an OBD2 scanner to look for any trouble codes related to the cruise control.

5. Damaged Vacuum Actuator, Hoses or Cable (Older cruise control)

If you drive an older vehicle with cruise control, you might have an issue with the vacuum actuator or the cable that connects to the throttle. If there has been damage done to the vacuum hoses or the actuator, the cruise control will stop working altogether.

Additionally, the cable linking the actuator to the throttle must be in good shape. If it has been broken, the cruise control will fail.

What is Cruise Control?

Cruise control is a feature that is used when you are traveling at a consistent speed. Cruise control was first introduced for automobiles in the 1950s. However, it took many years before it became a staple in the modern vehicle.

This electrical system allows you to set a predetermined speed and take your foot off of the gas pedal. If you are on a long drive, there is less fatigue because you don’t have to try to maintain your speed. Cruise control can also benefit fuel economy because the vehicle uses less fuel when traveling steadily.

In newer cars, you might be able to find adaptive cruise control , which is a smart technology. Adaptive cruise control allows you to travel at a predetermined speed, but it also helps to maintain a safe distance from the vehicles in front of you with the help of sensors. With conventional cruise control, you need to take over when the car in front of you slows down, but that’s not the case with adaptive cruise control.

There are also vehicles nowadays with not only cruise control, but fully self-driving vehicles . We will most likely see much more of this in the future.

Cruise Control Repair Cost

The cost to repair your cruise control system depends on what caused it to fail. If you need to replace a cruise control or brake switch, you might spend between $125 and $350, including parts and labor. However, the cost to change a fuse is only a few dollars and you can perform the replacement yourself in just a matter of seconds.

On the other hand, when something major fails, such as the actuator, you could be looking at a much higher repair bill. In some vehicles, the cost to replace a cruise control actuator can cost more than $700. These costs rise if you drive a luxury vehicle or one that is difficult to get parts for.

It might not seem immediately important for you to fix the broken cruise control, but this defective system can affect other performance aspects. You could start to notice issues with acceleration or have trouble with the speedometer. To play it safe, it’s always best to have the cruise control repaired as soon as you notice a problem.

Is there a fuse for the cruise control?

Yes. If the cruise control is installed from the factory, you should check your car’s owner’s manual for the fuse location. If it’s an aftermarket cruise control, you’ll need to follow the wires to find the fuse.

Does the brake switch affect the cruise control system?

Yes. The brake switch affects the cruise control system. The brake switch sends a signal to the cruise control system to let it know when the brakes are being applied for the engine to know when it should stop accelerating.

Will the cruise control work if the check engine light is on?

The cruise control function will be disabled when the check engine light is on in most car models, even if the cause of the check engine light is not the cruise control itself. This is mainly due to safety reasons.

Can a vacuum leak affect cruise control?

Older vehicles use vacuum to control the throttle for the cruise control, and in this case a vacuum leak can heavily affect the cruise control. However, modern cruise controls are fully electric and in most cases will not be affected by a vacuum leak if the check engine light is not illuminated.

Although many people may think that the cruise control system is unimportant and not worth spending money to repair, the problem can be caused by a faulty part that will affect the engine’s performance or durability. Therefore, it is best not to ignore the problem if your cruise control is not working without first diagnosing the car properly.

If your cruise control still isn’t working after trying all the tips in this article, it’s probably time to take it in for a professional opinion from a mechanic. It may be a more serious problem that requires replacement parts or repairs. In the meantime, drive safe and enjoy the open road!

Cruise control won't work with LED tail lights

02 trailblazer cruise control not working

  • Add to quote

I replaced my stock tail lights with some very cool LED units. Around that time my cruise control stopped working. My nephew called Chevy about a solution and they said to check if my tail lights were working. He is assuming that the LED's don't draw enough current so the computer thinks the lights don't work. Has anyone experienced this or have any suggestions?

02 trailblazer cruise control not working

:wtf:

02 trailblazer cruise control not working

when i bought the bermuda LED tails, it included a little pamphlet that said something about checking your cruise control to make sure it still works. dont know why though. i never had any problems

02 trailblazer cruise control not working

Cruise control... I either mash the gas or the brake. No seriously mine works fine with my LEDs. Which lights did you get?

02 trailblazer cruise control not working

U need some 3ohm resistors if the tails didn't come with some...

02 trailblazer cruise control not working

:iamwithstupid: Cruise control won't work if the brakes are pressed sending voltage to the tails. With the LEDS the voltage is back feeding, so there for the brake switch is seeing a change in voltage. Causing a false "brake". Get some resistors put in that circuit, 3-5 ohms.

Where do I get and where do I put the resistors?

02 trailblazer cruise control not working

Jetttstream (mike) sells them...You use a splice connector to piggy back one of the resistor wires on the brake light wire. The other one you ground to a chassis bolt. I did a write up with pics a few months ago.

02 trailblazer cruise control not working

I just read this, I was told you splice the brake light wire and the ground wire. Does the ground not matter? I just did LED's in my recently purchased 07 TB3SS and have the same "no cruise" issue.

Cruise controls are very useful on a highway or on a longer drive. By relaxing your brakes and stopping your vehicle before it reaches a certain speed, the driver will be able to avoid accidents. Some cars have advanced features that allow you to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. When the cruise controls stop working , it is irritating; but if the control stops working completely, it can be very unsafe. Sudden cruise control that will not work, resulting in your vehicle’s rapid deceleration. Even if cruise controls are turned on, it is useful to stay alert.

Causes of Chevy Trailblazer Cruise Control Not Working

Like most electronic systems, if you feel a short circuit in one of your systems, the cruise control system will blow a fuse to prevent further damage. When a fuse blows on the cruise control, the cruise control will stop functioning completely.

Brake Pedal Switch Failure

Normally cruise controls are turned off when the accelerator is pushed down on the brake pedal, so the cruise controls are wired to the brake pedal switch. If this switch on the car’s brakes does not work , it may be as though the car is actually having difficulty braking, and does not automatically engage the cruise control system.

Failing Speed Sensor

A vehicle has several speed sensors which allow the driver to control the engine and display its current speed, as well as control the flow of ignition and fuel timing. If a speed control sensor on your car malfunctions, the cruise control will not work. You might also find that your speedometer stops functioning or that your engine has more trouble when it is idle.

How to Fix Chevy Trailblazer Cruise Control Not Working

You will need a technician to visit you to find out the reason your vehicle’s cruise control system has suddenly ceased to work. The technician will perform a thorough inspection of the system and determine the cost of any necessary repairs.

The first step is to find out how to read the code in the vehicle’s ECU. If the codes are read, the technician will try to figure out what might be the reason for the problem.

If a fuse is bad, the auto mechanic will try to remove it by finding the fuse for the cruise control system. If a fuse blows, the mechanic will need to take it out and install a new one with a rating of a proper current.

If a mechanic suspects that a brake pedal switch has broken, he/she will look at the switch to see if there is any damage that is only apparent. The technician should check the wiring attached to the switch to make sure that everything is functioning properly. When a switch is installed, the mechanic must check that both the cruise control system and the brake lights are functioning correctly.

To look at the sensors, the mechanic will need to get under the car. When the auto mechanic gets under the vehicle, he will find the speed sensor and check it to see if it is damaged, and if it is, he/she will try to replace it. Then he/she will adjust the pressure sensor in the car and test whether the wires that connect the pressure sensor to the speedometer or cruise control are still intact.

2004 Trailblazer cruise control stopped working, all signal lights are functional, and the SES is not on.

The blinkers and flashers are blinking faster than normal, but not the burnt out bulb hyper fast. I've put 200K on it and noticed the faster flash before I noticed the cruise control not working. I metered ALL the fuses in both fuse panels; all good. All lights - signal, stop, and tail, are functioning properly....except for the slightly faster blink. This morning the ABS and Parking Brake light came on after a bump and then went away after an ignition cycle. My gas mileage has gone down since the cruise quit. I cleaned up the VVT actuator. I'm now stumped. Crank sensor? Cam sensor?

Just found the answer on another site. Sure enough went out removed the 3 philips head screws in the steering column opened it up and walla a wire connection had pulled itself free. When my son uses my truck he always uses the tilt steering, when I get in I have to readjust it. because of this the wire connection pulled itself out. I simply pushed it back in an blinker and brake light are now working. My husband is now trying to figure a way to secure the wire connection so it doesn't pull itself out again. Hope this helps others, either by saving the cost of a dealership or machanic or from getting rear ended.

Trying to troubleshoot wipers and cruise control not working

  • Thread starter Envoy10
  • Start date Nov 13, 2017
  • Nov 13, 2017

My wipers have been acting up these last few days and today they've completely stopped. I've been researching this and seems like it may be a build up of grease in the control board. As they were going I noticed the lower settings wouldn't respond. I'd have to turn the knob up to the fastest setting to get a response, then switch to lower speed for the wipers to work. Now I get nothing from the wipers, the sprayer stopped working short time after. I figured I'd try opening up the housing and seeing if that's the problem, but now I'm seeing that my cruise control isn't working. I'm wondering if this is a wiper motor issue or if it's the multifunction switch. The turn signals do work. The cruise control does not work, wiper knob does not work and sprayer does not work. This is my daily driver and work vehicle and not many dry days here in Seattle so I'm trying to figure this one out quickly. Getting to the motor doesn't seem too bad, I can try tomorrow. I did find a video on how to replace both parts so that helps. I'm just trying to figure out which is the real problem. If it is the motor controler module maybe a good cleaning will save me buying a new one. Anyone have any input?

mrrsm

Good Idea on trying something that might just work as a Quick-N-EZ Fix first... Disconnect the Wiper Motor Connector and look over the Pins for the M&F interface for any Rust or Corrosion. Autozone sells small, Dielectric Grease Packets at every counter... usually meant for Tail Light Bulbs and such... but after spraying down both sides of the electrical mate ups with some CRC Electrical Contact Cleaner and De-greaser and then applying the Grease as mentioned. Give that a try first and let's hope it works before the Snow and Rain decides to test the idea. By the way... Autozone sells the Electrical Contact Cleaner-De-greaser as well.

Matt

I'd try to open up the wipers first. Do you have the rain sense wipers? They're the ones that usually have the issue, but more hesitating than just not working. Your cruise can only be affected by a few things. A code that's not bringing up a CEL, the fuse (but your brake lights wouldn't work either) or a flaky brake pedal switch.

christo829

I'd look at the wiring from the multifunction switch through the shaft down to the steering column first. The only shared item you've got between wipers *and* cruise is the wiring itself. Turn signals are actuated by the shaft to the column switch mechanically, so they don't share any wiring from the multifunction switch. It's possible that the wiper switch is acting up as well, but cruise control isn't using any of those same contact pads. Hm...but do they share a ground? I don't have a wiring diagram at hand to check, but grounds can be a common point of failure. That wouldn't explain the gradual wiper speed failure, but now that everything from the multifunction switch has failed, it could have been a chafed wire that gradually frayed and broke. Good Luck! Chris

Mooseman

If you check my signature, you'll find a link to the manuals which include schematics. All of the above is good advice but my bet would be the switch as all are related to that or a wiring/ground fault related to it.

Did you ever get a stuttering, chattering wiper? If so, you probably need to clean the wiper in the motor and regrease with dielectric grease.

So I am looking into this today. So far I've checked #33 fuse under the rear seat, I've checked for any fault codes for the cruise control and brake lights are all working. I can't seem to find a battery terminal puller near me anywhere, I'm going to have to order one and wait a couple days for it to come in it seems. I will try troubleshooting the switch in the meantime.

  • Nov 15, 2017

If you are getting the battery terminal puller to remove the wiper arms, don't. All that happened when I used one was I bent the "handle". Just undo the nut until it comes to the top of the post, then smack it a few or more times with a hammer and it should pop loose. Also, squirt some magic piss on there before you start.

Roger that--^-- @Matt ... THIS OTC Tool is a variant of the very expensive K&M version that will work with just a touch of Moly-D HP Grease on the Ball Bearing nose of the pusher center- bolt to keep it from walking off of the Wiper Stud... AND the much Lower Price on this unique tool makes it very attractive, too: (... take note that it has a Hex Wrench hold assist for those wiper arms that need more effort to "pop" the damned welded on arms free...) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000L7JQE8/?tag=gmtnation-20 ...but if that one looks too light to make the wiper arms budge... THIS OTC sturdier version might be your first choice ...with a bigger price tag as well: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004CGRQGE/?tag=gmtnation-20

  • Nov 16, 2017

Update : So I went ahead and ordered a new turn signal switch and replaced it. Unfortunately it did not fix the problem. It's acting weird actually. Cruise control does work again. Here's where things get weird, the tab to control the sprayer does not work. The knob for wiper speed acts funny. When turned to the lowest setting, it sprays for 5 seconds then turns off, nothing from the wipers. If I go to a faster setting, it sprays for those 5 seconds, then turns off, but repeats this cycle, wipers- still nothing. Finally, when at the off position and turning the knob down to activate the sprayer and wipers for a couple seconds normally, all I'm getting is the sprayer. So I'm confused. It's getting dark out I'll continue tomorrow. I would love to not have to order this terminal puller, I will use once. I'll try to get them off using your method Matt. It's looking like I will have to get to that motor/control board.

Keep an eye on your "Hammer Swing" and place something protective on the adjacent windshield as it will be very easy to get too enthusiastic ...and ricochet the strikes into the wind screen glass ...

Had a similar problem on a 97, and it wes the part that mounts to the wiper motor (can't remember the name, washer pump housing?). You didn't need to pull the wiper motor to replace it.

So in your current state of "repair", you can NOT get the wipers to run in high speed at any position on the signal stock? You can try Disconnect the steering column harness connector. Connect a jumper wire from the windshield wiper switch high signal circuit terminal in the body harness connector to ground. (Turn ON the ignition) If it does do high speed, then you need to check the ground circuit on the terminal as that's how the "thing" works without the jumper action. NOTE: you need to find a KNOWN / good ground for testing. If it doesn't run on high, then you need to get at the motor. Good luck.

Update : So I had a mechanic friend pull the arms off for me. I tried opening the control box and cleaning the gear and contacts and reassembled it. Did not work. However, the sprayer does work again since cleaning.. I purchased a new motor assembly and installed it. So the 2 fastest speed settings work. The arms continually move, but the slower settings I only get the first movement nothing after. I have a feeling I found the problem. The connector seems to have gotten some grime or sludge in it(see pics). I believe this causing the problem. I will order a new connector and replace it. So I'm thinking, buy the new connector and replace it. Test the new motor assembly, if it works, replace new motor assembly with old assembly to check if it's only the connector that needs to be replaced. If so, return new motor assembly and return new turn signal switch. If you look at the pictures you will the two far right connections are covered in grime. I was able to get most of it off on the bottom right connector(black wire) , but the top right connector (yellow/beige wire) seems to be in worse condition. I don't see any contact point for the male connector to touch. If anyone has gone down this road, please chime in.

That's a new one I believe.

Reprise

Your plan sounds good for confirming cause / potentially returning the motor. Just be sure that the place you got it from will take it back - a lot of places won't accept returns on 'electrical' parts. Good luck!

UPDATE : So I figured I would update my troubleshooting, maybe this will help someone else down the road.. It seems the wipers are working, they just were not working correctly. The intervals for the different speeds were off. I wasn't sure if rainsense was causing any problems so I removed fuse #29 from the fuse box under the rear seat. That seems to have fixed the problem, all intervals are consistent: #1- 20sec #2- 9.5sec #3- 5.5sec #4- 3.5sec #5- 2.5sec #6- continuous - slow #7- continuous - fast With fuse #29 removed, everything seems to be working fine except for the 'o' setting, which sprays fluid and activates the wipers a couple of times. When I reinstall the fuse, it goes back to being inconsistent. The wipers will go 1 time and that's it. Confusing. I do have the SLT trim and I believe it comes with rainsense, although I've never used it. I will have to read up on how it works exactly. I received the new connector in the mail, so I will install it and see what/if any changes happen. Unfortunately I don't have any real work space, just side of the road in rainy Seattle. So I may have to wait until the next dry day which should be Tuesday. I'm wondering if that one wire in the picture above is causing the problem, we'll see.

OK I'm confused here. I've replaced the wiper motor and the connector back in December. All was working fine for a couple of weeks, but now it's acting strange again. The wipers are stoppingin in the middle of travel. I know from reading, that this is usually grease build-up in the controller box, but this is a brand new motor assembly. What else could be causing the wipers to stop and get stuck mid-way through? I ended up just removing the fuse and now it's just a normal wiper system without rainsense. It's working fine like this, but I'd like to know if there's something I'm missing here.

The vast majority of these trucks don't have rainsense and haven't heard of problems with it. Personally, I'd just live without it.

  • Jan 24, 2018

the problem may be easy to understand better if when you get into the "fail mode" (if readily reproduceable), you probe the connectors to see what's happening. Normally, for most vehicles (my experience) is that ground removal is used to stop or cause "run on" until the wiper is back at home. You could check to see what condition is causing the result and go from there. check to see if there is anything happening on the control pin since your other test indicated that disabling the rain sensor results in "normal" operation.

Cruise control not working?

02 trailblazer cruise control not working

So my crusie control quite working last weekend on my way from Sioux Falls S.D. down to Omaha N.E. When i got home started looking and had no fuses blown and cant seem to find a relay for it. Went down and got a new turn signal switch (controls your cruise, whipper's, high low beams, blinkers). Lucky for me i know a guy and it only cost me 56 bucks. replaced it and i still have no cruise.. any idea where to go from here?:suicide: Oh yea it's a 2003 Trailblazer LTZ 4x4

It's almost never the switch. Sorry you didn't find it here in a search first. http://forums.trailvoy.com/showthread.php?t=35806

Yea.... looked in the search and went over the site as best i could and could not find what i was looking for.. no worries i always have a spare blinker switch.. but still no cruise.

Man!!!! wow i had no idea so many thing's were tied into the cruise... maybe i should check to see if my toilet is running and see if that fixes the problem. lol:crazy:

Ok... just got back from O'riley auto parts... have a check engin light on.. P1345... cam to crank position sensor. (replaced both less than 1 month ago) once i looked into the code reader some more it said a missfire, fuel system, and emission. but just the one code came up with all those subparts. like i said i replace cam sensor and crank sensor about a month , month and a half ago. disconcted battery for 10 min code cleared. but as soon as i drive more than 5mph code comes back. What next?:suicide:

Not much to add, but.... I just changed out my cam position actuator solenoid valve. It still rode rough, so I cleaned the throttle body. Turns out everything needed to reset, so I disconnected the battery and everything else I had been working on (throttle body, CAPS, etc). I drove it and it rode rough for a little bit. The more I drove it, the better it got. BUT my cruise isn't working. Does anyone know if this is a SYMPTOM of all of this or is it unrelated? When I got back from my drive, the rough idle was much better. Just concerned about the cruise. I use it excessively.

If your SES light is not on, and there's no codes stored when you read the OBDII port, then I think the next most likely cause is a hair-trigger brake light. Even with the ignition off, somebody can press the brake pedal and you can look at the lights and see if they come on before the pedal is pressed much. A brake pedal that vibrates while driving enough to trigger the brake lights will also suppress the cruise control. Then you just have to adjust the brake pedal switch.

Welcome to the P1345 club. Been having issues with this since I've had the truck on the road. Even if the code is just pending, it will disable your cruise. If you replaced the crank and/or cam sensors, you need a CASE relearn at the dealer using a Tech2 scanner. Easy process but bend over for the bill you're gonna get for the 10 minutes of work. BTW, how's your CPAS? Have you cleaned or replaced it lately? Wouldn't be a bad idea to clean it at least. Search for CPAS cleaning for the thread on it. If the connector is full of oil, replace it.

I'm now a member! Now I got the P1345 code. Just bought my crank position sensor. Waiting for it to cool off to replace it. Fun. I've already changed the CPAS. I'm wondering, should I go ahead and do the camshaft position sensor?

Well....... I might blame Dorman after all. I never took mine it to get it reset. I took out the Dorman 917010 and put the original one back in (after I had cleaned it down real good w/ a carb cleaner and let it air dry). MUCH better. It's not good as new, but it's better than the Dorman. I read on here (somewhere?) where someone had contacted Dorman about it not operating correctly and they gave him a manufacturer's CPAS for free. I just drove it around for about 20 minutes. Like I said, it's much better. It would probably be better with one from the manufacturer and not an aftermarket. ??? That's for another day. It's not until I got back and all cleaned up that I realized I never checked the cruise (ugh). I have no codes and it's driving better. That's good enough until tomorrow!

Crazy thing is that the GM part is actually cheaper than Dorman's. Got it at GMPartsShop for $37, Dorman's at RockAuto is $46. With mine, I got the exact same P1345 problem with both the Dorman and GM CPAS but the Dorman is made cheaper. The black plastic connector part can be rotated in the solenoid and the groove for the retaining clip is cut all around the body of the solenoid, allowing it to be turned. The retainer was actually in the wrong "clock" position and I had to rotate it so it matched the original.

When cruise control go out does it involve the transmission? I was driving had my cruise control set at 70mph and it went off and didn't come back on I'm not a mechanic I remodel home for a living I'm out here in Electra TX a ghost town nothing out here I could use some good advice

Cruise Control issue @John303 I have found that my cruise control will not work when the temp is below 35 degrees.
